For the final episode in this first 13-part series of Magic and Medicines, Eleanor explains the origins and subsequent interpretations of Ogham, the ancient Irish language of cuts.We start by exploring how we define what Ogham is, and its origins in the 4th century A.D. From there we dive into how the system works, our earliest sources (including The Auraicept na n-Eces, The Ogham Tract, and The Book of Ballymote) some associated mythology, and points of crossover with other runic languages such as the Elder Futhark. After that, via a bit of Medieval misinterpretation, it's onto the Neo-Pagan revivals and characters including Iolo Morganwg and Robert Graves, whose speculative works served to further muddle our understanding of Ogham, while also birthing a series of quite nice ideas! Encompassing methods for using Ogham in divination to the Celtic Tree Months, links between Ogham and the legends of the Tower of Babel, Lebor Ogham, 'orthodox' and 'scholastic' scripts, and much more, it's a fascinating journey into a rich, technical topic which may, in truth, forever remain a little bit of a mystery...Martin will be back on Saturday for our Local Legends interview with Dr Francis Young, and we then hope you will join us on Monday for our next county episode, in which we will be exploring the history and folklore of Worcestershire! The Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Then, and most importantly, the pair take turns to tell a new version of an ancient story from that county - all before discussing what that tale might mean, where it might have come from, and the truths it reveals about England's hidden past...Bonus Episodes are released on Thursdays (Magic and Medicines about folk remedies and arcane spells, Three Ravens Bestiary about cryptids and mythical creatures, Dying Arts about endangered heritage crafts, and Something Wicked about folkloric true crime from across history) plus Local Legends episodes on Saturdays - interviews with acclaimed authors, folklorists, podcasters and historians with unique perspectives on that week's county. With a range of exclusive content on Patreon, too, including audio ghost tours, the Three Ravens Newsletter, and monthly Three Ravens Film Club episodes about folk horror films from across the decades, why not join us around the campfire and listen in?Learn more at www.threeravenspodcast.com, join our Patreon at www.patreon.com/threeravenspodcast, and find links to our social media channels here: https://linktr.ee/threeravenspodcast Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. With Haunting Season 2024 now over, we're back to our regular business, and this week Eleanor is punting us along misty waterways as we explore the history and folklore of Cambridgeshire! We start off chatting about Guy Fawkes, St Cleer and "Ringing Night," after which we cavort into Cambridgeshire, a soggy county whose landscape today is nothing like it once was.Aside from chatting about the draining of the fens, the county's success in the lucrative field of fossilized poop mining, and the network of secret tunnels under Cambridge itself, Eleanor uses a boar bristle to bake bread, weighs up the possibility of us eating brawn, and teaches us how to make traditional Fenland Mead for week's County Dish. When it comes to folklore, interspersed with some excerpts from next Saturday's Local Legends interview with celebrated author and Cambridge University folklore professor Dr Francis Young, we talk about a surprisingly lively Roman skeleton, protective ghostly bulldogs, hilltop duels with Otherworldly knights, and much more besides. Then it's on to the main event: Eleanor's story, "The Tale of a Toadman" in which she channels the spirit of Edith Porter to narrate a spooky adventure which runs the gamut from hedge magic to bodily mutilation to mythical bog serpents. We really hope you enjoy the episode, and we'll be back on Thursday with a new Magic and Medicines bonus episode about the ancient runic language of Ogham and its connections to the trees of the British Isles, ahead of Saturday's full Local Legends chat with Francis! Next Monday, July 8th, marks the 41st anniversary of the birth of James O’Connor who was a stillborn, the son of Bertie and the late Marianne O’Connor of Ardoughter, Ballyduff. James was born in St Catherine’s Hospital, Rathass, Tralee, which is now Áras an Chontae. His parents were told James was buried in the Old Famine Burial Grounds at the rear of the building. Sadly, Marianne died in October. Bertie wants to erect a black granite plaque to James’s memory. It’s proposed its size would be 400mm square, 12mm thick and would include the depiction of an angel as well as an Ogham inscription. Bertie wants to attach the plaque to the wall of the graveyard. But Kerry County Council’s environmental department – graveyards section has refused. In an email, it told Bertie: “The objection is not based on religious grounds. The burial ground is a public space and all signage and plaques must reflect that.” Radio Kerry has contacted Kerry County Council for a comment. After hearing Bertie’s interview, Kathleen Wrenn got in touch with the show and told Jerry how her late father used to clean the graveyard.

Discover the world of the Ogham script, an ancient form of writing developed by the Celts in Ireland during the early centuries CE. Characterized by linear strokes carved into stone and wood, Ogham is one of Ireland's earliest known alphabets. In this video, we explore its historical origins, cultural significance, and modern interpretations within Paganism. We'll tackle: * The scholarly debate on Ogham's origins and its development. * The significance of Ogham inscriptions found across Ireland and the British Isles. * The role of the Book of Ballymote in preserving Ogham knowledge. * The modern neo-pagan practice of Ogham divination and its tree associations. Featuring the greatest periwinkle story ever told, this episode explores the evidence for the language spoken in Ireland in late antiquity with the highly entertaining Prof. David Stifter (Maynooth University). He tells us all about the uniqueness of the ogham/ogam writing script (which may or may not have been invented by a Kerryman) and how difficult Old Irish is to learn. Stay tuned to the end to hear Prof. Stifter recite/translate some lines and poetry in Old Irish, Modern Irish, Latin and German. This is the third and final episode of our little trilogy on Ireland in late antiquity. In this episode, host Dr Niamh Wycherley explores the rich world of late antiquity (approx. 3rd to 7th centuries AD) with Dr Elva Johnston (School of History, UCD) when Irish elites imported wine, foodstuffs, fancy earbuds and Christianity from the Roman world. Dr Johnston makes the important distinction that Ireland wasn't 'part of' nor 'apart from' the Roman Empire during this time. We discover that it is unhelpful to categorize this period in religious terms such as 'Early Christian Ireland' — we should not assume that belief was the dominating organising factor in society. This is the 1st episode in a trilogy on Ireland in late antiquity. Next up we will have Terry O'Hagan (@voxhib) on St Patrick, the poster boy of Late Antique Ireland, and we'll finish with Prof. David Stifter on Ogham writing and the Early Irish language on March 29th. Suggested reading: -Elva Johnston, “Ireland in Late Antiquity: A Forgotten Frontier,” Studies in Late Antiquity 1.2 (2017): 107–23 -Elva Johnston, When worlds collide? In this episode, we will explore the Ogham in Druidry. It is difficult to explain visual images over an auditory medium like a podcast, so feel free to search the internet. I talk about the history of the Ogham, how it was used in the past, and many ways it can be used today in our spiritual practice. Like everything in Druidry, there are many layers to how we can approach any subject. Dennis Stone is the president of America's Stonehenge: https://www.stonehengeusa.com/He graduated from Daniel Webster College in 1977 with a degree in Aviation Management, and was a full-time commercial pilot for over 35 years before his retirement in 2016. America's Stonehenge was opened to the public in 1958 by Dennis's father, Robert Stone.Dennis has been involved with America's Stonehenge for most of his life and has always had a fascination with archaeology and archaeoastronomy. Since retiring, he has found many serpentine walls and spirit windows throughout the site, among other new discoveries. He has taken numerous courses and traveled extensively to ancient sites both in the U.S. and internationally.Dennis visits with Talking to discuss the enduring mystery that is America's Stonehenge:Was it built by a Native American Culture or a migrant European population? No one knows for sure. A maze of man-made chambers, walls and ceremonial meeting places, at over 4,000 years old America's Stonehenge is most likely the oldest man-made construction in the United States.Like Stonehenge in England, America's Stonehenge was built by ancient people well versed in astronomy and stone construction. It has been determined that the site is an accurate astronomical calendar. It was, and still can be, used to determine specific solar and lunar events of the year.Various inscriptions have been found throughout the site including Ogham, Phoenician and Iberian Punic Script. Across the world, a wide range of writing systems developed in diverse societies and Medieval Europe was no different. Apart from the Latin alphabet, many will be familiar with the use of runes. But did you know that in Ireland and Britain, right at the start of the Medieval period, a different alphabet emerged by the name of Ogham? To find out more about this fascinating script, Dr. Cat Jarman is joined by Professor Katherine Forsyth and Dr. Nora White who are deeply immersed in research into this unique alphabet and writing system. We are enjoying the music of the women of Celtic music this week on the podcast. There are some who continue to devalue women and strip them of their rights. But this podcast believes strongly that women too need representation. That's why I play at least one podcast a quarter highlighting the women of Celtic music. And I'll be honest. That's not nearly enough. FairPle is an organization based in Ireland that seeks to achieve gender balance in the production, performance, promotion, and development of Irish traditional and folk music. They advocate for equal opportunity and balanced representation for all. A recent look at the top festivals in Ireland revealed that less than a quarter of all musicians featured at festivals were women. Headliners are even less. And I get it. Again, I do this feature on women in Celtic music every quarter. That's not a lot. I hope to increase the number of these shows and to continue to highlight Celtic women. But it's a tough process with my time constraints. If you have ideas or suggestions or want to help, make something happen, please drop me a line. And make sure you sign up for the FairPle.com website for more details about the work they are doing.
