Tom Higgenson is the lead singer and songwriter for the iconic band the Plain White T's. Everyone know him as the guy who wrote and sang the mega hit song "Hey There Delilah". Tom and the rest of the band put out a self titled album at the end of 2023 and hit the road on their first tour together since before the pandemic. Their show at the Fine Line in Minneapolis, Minnesota was near the end of tour and Tom was kind enough to sit down for this interview backstage before the show. In this interview we discuss the new album, his side project Million Miler, his most irrational fear, his experience with Cindi Lauper, his never ending search for the world's best coffee, and much more.

Today's episode is a conversation I had with the wonderful Matt Jaffe. After cutting his teeth on open mics around the Bay Area, San Francisco songwriter Matt Jaffe was discovered by Jerry Harrison of Talking Heads. Together, they produced his first album at the age of 16, cementing Matt's dedication to music. Soon, he formed a band, dropped out of college, and has not looked back. Since then, Matt has cowritten with Chuck Prophet and Tom Higgenson of Plain White T's, crisscrossed the country opening for Blues Traveler and Alejandro Escovedo, and recorded half a dozen albums alongside luminaries of the Bay Area music scene. Inspired by the great lineage of rock n' roll, he marries literary lyrics with the undeniable urge to dance.I sat down with Matt on November 2 of this year to talk about his music and the influence of Tom Petty's music in his life. Yet again (man, I've been lucky!) I was so lucky to be able to talk to such a warm, articulate, and genuine artist. I know you'll enjoy Matt's perspectives on everything from the whether the voice is merely an instrument to how Mike Campbell transcends mere soloing as a guitarist and not being intimidated by having Steve Ferrone play drums on his first record! Please check out Matt's website here: mattjaffemusic.com and go check out his Youtube channel here: @MattJaffeMusicDon't forget to follow me on social media, like, subscribe, and please, leave a rating if you like the show:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thetompettyprojectTwitter: https://twitter.com/TomPettyProjectInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetompettyproject/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCt6BLRWuuAR43zHpNKIirOwAll music, including the theme song, provided by my very best friend Randy Woods. Tom Higgenson from The Plain White T’s joins the dads to talk about all they’ve done since the band was on iCarly, and does Tom still talk to Delilah?
This week, Aviv takes us through the tale of 2006's "Hey There Delilah" (soon to have its own TV show adaptation). In 2002, only three years after a near-fatal car crash, Plain White T's singer Tom Higgenson met Delilah DiCrescenzo through a mutual friend. Tom was interested, Delilah wasn't, but as their relationship transitioned to AOL Instant Messenger, Tom promised to write Delilah a song that would get them both invited to the Grammys. Little did either of them know that Tom's prediction would come true. "Hey There Delilah" became a number one hit in the summer of 2007, and with it Delilah kissed her anonymity goodbye. Depending on who you ask, and when, this was either a dream come true or a nightmare. And what would Delilah's longtime boyfriend Will have to say (and do we even care)? Summary:Our guest on this episode of Songcraft is Marty Dodson, who has written #1 singles such as “Everybody Wants to Go to Heaven” for Kenny Chesney and “Must Be Doin’ Something Right” for Billy Currington. The Nashville hitmaker joins us to discuss his songwriting journey, and give us further insight into Songtown, the songwriter community he co-founded to provide quality resources for aspiring professionals. Part One:Scott and Paul talk about their favorite music podcasts of the moment.Part Two:Our in-depth interview with Marty Dodson.About Marty Dodson:One of the rare Nashville songwriters who actually grew up in Nashville, Marty Dodson changed careers as a young adult to dedicate himself to his passion for writing songs. Much of his success came in the country world with singles such as Rascal Flatts’ Top 10 hit “While You Loved Me,” Carrie Underwood’s “Songs Like This,” Kenny Chesney’s multi-week #1 hit “Everybody Wants to Go to Heaven,” Charlie Worsham’s debut single “Could It Be,” Blake Shelton’s “Doing it to Country Songs.” and two Billy Currington chart-toppers, “Must Be Doin’ Something’ Right” and “Let Me Down Easy.” Never one to limit himself to a single genre, Marty has also collaborated with Tom Higgenson of the rock band Plain White T’s, which recorded two of his songs, and has had his compositions recorded by everyone from Joe Cocker, who had an international #1 with Marty’s “Fire It Up,” to Cho Yong Pil, a South Korean superstar who had a multi-week #1 with Marty’s song “Bounce.” In addition to his writing, Marty is the co-founder of Songtown, a creative community of aspiring writers that provides blog posts, webinars, podcasts, and even books, including two co-authored by Marty: Song Building: Mastering Lyric Writing, and The Songwriter’s Guide to Mastering Co-Writing.
Will and Ray discuss current 1980s news including whether Jeff Goldblum could be good at Dungeons and Dragons and whether a "lame" potential 1980s Easter Egg is news. Then, the duo speaks with Tom Higgenson (Plain White T's) about Milly the first album from his solo project Million Miler. Each song from the new LP sounds like it was streamed from the 1980s. It's not every day you get a Grammy-nominated musician willing to guest judge an episode, but this week we got lucky. Although his band Plain White T's didn't blow up until the 2000s, Tom Higgenson is in love with the 80s! Matter of fact, he loves them so much, he started his own synth-pop solo project that's just dripping with nostalgia! So after you listen to this, head out and take a listen to his new solo work, Million Miler. Tom is a fantastic judge, and he calls em as he sees them! First up this week, back from returning tapes to the video store, Mike Ranger delivers a late "week experience" with March 1978. Mancrush drew Tom's favorite decade, but will it help? He brings the best of his third week of March 1986. Marc James rounds out the competition with a dandy offering from the third week of March 1996! If you're wondering, the new Million Miler album is coming in May, but you can already listen to a few of the new tracks on Spotify. Get ready for a real straight shooter, Tom has pretty even-keeled judging parameters! In this episode, you might hear something about: Not Jim Morrison's cousin releases a hit track, a platonic love story between coworkers, phone sex operators, Billboard chart-toppers you forgot, skanking made easy, Mike Ranger brings Cheese and Onions, a musician falls while another is almost fired, yoke filled aliens, Mike will win around with a little luck, the aftermath of Suge, suing psychics, balancing acts gone awry, HBO knocks out the competition, Michael Stivic's mustache, karate champs wear singlets, Delilah goes to the Grammys, Tom's new work with Milly, iCarly, Ringo Star, punk rock, and can I get a little cup of wrestling to go with my mayonnaise and shredded cabbage? Do you agree with Tom's rulings? Play at home and judge for yourself! While you're at it, send your rulings to our Facebook and pick up 20 points on the Dueling Decades Leaderboard! Together with American Songwriter and Sean Ulbs of The Eiffels, we had the pleasure of interviewing Tom Higgenson over Zoom video! Born and raised in the suburbs of Chicago, IL, Tom Higgenson is best known as the lead singer of the Plain White T’s, most famous for their acoustic hit, Hey There Delilah. The band received two Grammy nominations for the song, and quickly achieved notoriety around 2006. More recently, the T’s released an independent record in 2015, American Nights, and a synth-heavy pop record in 2018, Parallel Universe. The latter album inspired Tom to branch out on his own in a solo project he named Million Miler. His 80’s-inspired synth-pop tracks are straight out of Stranger Things or Back to the Future. Million Miler has released six singles so far, but keep an eye on him because big things are coming this spring….Long before “Milly”, though, Tom started a punk rock band with fellow Plain White T, Dave Tirio. They joined forces with their childhood pals, Darren and Eric Vorel, to form TLB, formerly known as That Lying Bitch. Now a trio, Higgenson and the Vorel brothers released TLB’s sophomore album, Blood & Sand, on Halloween.Beyond TLB and Million Miler, the label also writes with Chicago-based dream pop duo Fairview and dance pop solo artist Jessica Jarrell, all of whom are signed to Tom’s record label, Humans Were Here. Currently, Tom can be found hosting a weekly solo live stream on the Plain White T’s Facebook page, a show he has dubbed “The Wednesday Club”. Fans vote on a set list each week, from Grammy-nominated hits to no-longer-available deep tracks.Tom can be found on Instagram @higgypop.We want to hear from you! The Cool Guys™ sat down with the lead singer of the Plain White T’s, Tom Higgenson, to talk their newest album Parallel Universe, and hit him with some hard hitting questions! Enjoy!
Tom Higgenson of Plain White Ts joined me for a long overdue catchup. And for this episode, we went for burritos at Los Burritos #2 in his old stomping grounds of Villa Park. We talked at length about the band's excellent new release, "Parallel Universe," as well as: Villa Park is like primordial soup. How important are the ties back to Chicago as the band continues to take over the world? "I'm such a suburban kid... always have been." "Parallel Universe," and the experimentation the band did with the songs for the album. Is Tom a "romantic" at heart? ("I used to be 'all in'... ") Tom snuck a peak at the interview notes, and was given an unfair advantage. The hints of darkness that weave their way through PWTs music. My favorite song on the new album: "Top of the World" "Bonnie I Want You": It's not about a hooker (much to my surprise). The band's commitment to video-making (and their incredible success with it). The video for "1, 2, 3, 4" and its coming-together of romantic spirit, Chicago scenery and DIY approach. The much-rumored TV show based on the Grammy-nominated super huge megahit "Hey There Delilah" ("We've got this story arc... we've got this idea"). The whirlwind that engulfed the band when "Hey There Delilah" took off. The band's performance on "iCarly" and the relative awesomeness of that show compared to other tween shows on Nick and Disney. The band's early days in the suburbs: Truly the "good old days." Tom's nomination for a Tony Award ("BFF" from Spongebob Squarepants: The Broadway Musical). The evolution of Plain White Ts: "It's been a weird one."
