#BTLRadioShow kicks off YEAR TEN with a very special guest – Academy Award winner TOM SCHULMAN who joins us live discussing his new film which he wrote and directed, the pot-boiling DOUBLE DOWN SOUTH. Plus, you'll hear my exclusive interview with writer/director BILL OLIVER talking about his emotionally powerful film OUR SON. First up, take a listen as writer/director BILL OLIVER talks about OUR SON; an emotional, very human, powerhouse starring Luke Evans and Billy Porter in a gut-punching story of a gay couple now going their separate ways but with their son caught in the middle. Porter is more than award-worthy. Listen as Bill and I break down the film's elements and how each supports the very human themes of this story, diving into the cinematography and particularly blocking and lighting, score, casting, the impetus for the story itself, and more. Then listen as writer/director (and Academy Award winner) TOM SCHULMAN joins me live discussing at length his new film DOUBLE DOWN SOUTH – a character-driven pot-boiler with well-chiseled interesting characters, rapier dialogue, immersive ambiance as thick as the most humid Southern day, impeccable casting, and billiard keno. An insightful conversation as Tom talks about the genesis of the film and how it was inspired in part by his own childhood and love of billiard keno. Then he breaks down the visual grammar and his directorial choices (such as widescreen and anamorphic lenses) that fuel the story and inform the character of the film, location scouting and finding the perfect exterior in one state and interior in another, casting, sound design and the attention to detail within the soundscape, score and needle drops that capture an old rural Southern vibe, editing, and more. Filmmakers and fans alike will appreciate hearing what Tom has to say about DOUBLE DOWN SOUTH. http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

DOUBLE DOWN SOUTH is a feminist fatale noir set in the dangerous world of illegal, high-stakes keno pool gambling at the turn of the 21st century. Nick (Kim Coates, “Bad Blood”) owns a run-down plantation house in the rural South and is charmed by a smart and tough Keno ace, Diana (Lili Simmons, “Power Book IV: Force”). Diana wants to win big and Nick is determined to stake her. Little Nick (Igby Rigney,“The Midnight Club”) strikes up a friendship with Diana and coaches her to win against the odds. Diana must prove herself in a man's world to earn a match against Beaumont DuBinion (Justin McManus, “Power Book II: Ghosts”), the undisputed world's greatest keno pool player, who, it turns out, has a contentious and violent history with Nick. Written and directed by Academy Award© winning writer Tom Schulman (Dead Poets Society), the story is reflective of the misogyny and casual and blatant racism that still exists in our country. Schulman grew up in the South in the 50's and 60's and frequented pool halls where high-stakes keno was the game of choice for the regulars, a game which is so insidious from a gambling perspective that it was banned in most states. Director Tom Schulman stops by to talk about his superb cast he has assembled, finding the perfect location for this project and the joy of working in the realm of noir / Southern Gothic genre filmmaking. Today's guest is none other than Tom Schulman, the Oscar-winning writer of timeless school drama Dead Poets Society. Released in 1989, Tom's affecting and uplifting story of seven classmates who take a stand against the uniformity of the elite boarding school they attend is a valentine to never letting the world smoulder that flame in you that makes life worth living. Best remembered for an astonishing turn by Robin Williams as the kids' teacher, John Keating, the movie walked away with Best Original Screenplay at the Academy Awards and Best Film at the BAFTAs, and remains an ingrained part of our pop culture three decades later: the boys' emotive calls of “oh captain, my captain” and Keating's advice to “carpe diem – seize the day” deeply embedded in our collective consciousness today.Writing the film involved deep soul-searching from Tom, whose life story overlaps with the characters in his screenplay. He went to an elite boarding school and was inspired by an iconoclastic teacher. Speaking from his home in Los Angeles, he told us about an abandoned sub-plot in which Keating has cancer in his first draft, about the improvisational magic that Robin Williams brought to the role, and what he thinks the movie's legacy is today. No need to stand on your desk at home to listen along – a sofa will do just fine. This episode is sponsored by ScreenCraft and WeScreenplay.Subscribe to our new spin-off show How I Write by clicking here.Script Apart is a podcast about the first-draft secrets behind great movies.

His screenplay for Dead Poets Society won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay in 1989, and was his first movie script to reach the big screen. Pickering himself is a writer of many books, including a very good one on teaching called Letters to a Teacher.   Episode Links More about Tom Schulman: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0776114/ Letters to a Teacher by Sam Pickering: https://groveatlantic.com/book/letters-to-a-teacher/

This week on On Story we’re celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Robert Altman film Cookie’s Fortune with a conversation with the film’s screenwriter Anne Rapp & the 30th anniversary of Dead Poets Society with Academy Award® winning writer Tom Schulman. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Mississippi set ‘non-murder’ mystery Cookie’s Fortune. The film marked director Robert Altman’s second collaboration with writer Anne Raap – Raap’s short story All The President’s Women was previously adapted into an episode of the television series Gun and the two would later go on to collaborate on a second feature Dr. T & The Women.  I spoke with Anne Raap after a special 20th anniversary screening of the film earlier this year. Clips of Cookie’s Fortune courtesy of Moonstone Entertainment & Sandcastle 5 Productions Next up, a conversation with screenwriter Tom Schulman who won an Academy Award® for best original screenplay for his film Dead Poets Society which was released 30 years ago this year. The film, directed by Peter Weir, follows a group of students studying in a conservative Vermont boarding school in 1959 and the English teacher who inspires them through poetry. Schulman discussed the film at the 21st Annual Austin Film Festival with filmmaker Christopher Boone. Clips of Dead Poets Society courtesy of Touchstone Pictures a.a.d.o. the Walt Disney Company

« But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for ».
