SwingerI spent the last week in Dublin in the Four Courts as part of the outworking of my case against the BBC's Spotlight programme nine years ago. But more of that when it's over which could take another fortnight. On the morning that the case started our Gearóid phoned me to say that his father-in-law Paddy ‘Swinger' McBride was dead. The news was a great shock. I had spent a half hour or more a few days before chatting with Paddy in his home. He was just out after a spell in hospital, and although he was ill his spirit was strong and he was full of craic and talk about the current politics, his son Patrick's Man of the Match performance for Antrim against Armagh, the need to build Casement and how a son of Tony Benn could behave the way Hillary Benn does.Israel's reign of terrorAs this column goes to press the Israeli government is calling up tens of thousands of army reservists for a full scale military invasion, subjugation and occupation of the Gaza Strip. After almost 20 months of genocide against the Palestinian people the Israeli state is now embarking on its final solution – the displacement of two million people and the mass murder of more Palestinians.Last Saturday was World Press Freedom Day – but not in Gaza. In the year and a half of this current reign of terror by Israel at least 211 journalists have been killed in the Gaza Strip while the international press corps is denied access to report on events in that huge concentration camp. Britain and most western and European states are silent on this. They are silent also on the deliberate use of starvation as a weapon of war against two million people, many of them children, who live in Gaza. According to UNICEF over three hundred thousand children under the age of five are suffering severe malnutrition.Commission on the Future of IrelandAs momentum in the demand for Irish Unity grows the work of Sinn Féin's Commission on the Future of Ireland continues to expand. In the last two months the Commission has held a Mid Ulster Peoples Assembly in the Seamus Heaney Homeplace in Bellaghy; a Tionól Pobail Bhaile Ghib in County Meath; a climate crisis conference - One Island, One Environment – in Dublin and an EU & Irish Unity- What next?- event in the European Parliament in Brussels.

In this episode, we speak with Yasha Maccanico a researcher and journalist at StateWatch, a UK-based charity focused on civil liberties, human rights and democracy in Europe.    We talk about a proposed EU law that could make it easier for states to criminalise acts of solidarity with people on the move.   Yasha also talks to us about abuses of state power in Europe under the guise of lowering immigration, the externalisation of the EU's borders in Africa, and much more.    ---Get in touch---   Twitter: @FleetCivil   Mastodon: @civilfleet@kolektiva.social   Bluesky: @thecivilfleet.bsky.social   Instagram: thecivilfleet   info@civilfleet.com   civilfleet.com --- Show notes ---   For more on StateWatch, check out their work here: statewatch.org   Follow them on BlueSky: @statewatch.bsky.social Ben misquotes the late left-wing politician Tony Benn, who once said: “The way a government treats refugees is very instructive, because it shows you how they would treat the rest of us if they thought they could get away with it.” In fact, the phrase may have been misattributed to Tony Benn. You can watch one of Tony Benn's most famous speeches against the US-UK' illegal invasion of Iraq, here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A7ciGW7h7PI&ab_channel=PoliticsJOE    Yasha mentions the an independent media company Bristol Cable. The Council is due to approve its position for negotiations with the European Parliament. The existing law has been criticised for failing to prevent the criminalisation of migration and acts of solidarity with migrants and refugees. The Belgian Council presidency presented a revised draft to other EU member states at the end of May, which would simplify the criminalisation of irregular entry, amongst other things. In the second part of his chat with Joe and Dion, Chris explains how the establishment were forced to confront a reality they had tried to suppress once the Guildford Four were released in 1989. Two years later the Birmingham Six were free. If the death penalty had still been in operation they would have been hanged as many other innocents were. The five rebels in question being Tony Benn, Jeremy Corbyn, Diane Abbott, John McDonnell, and Ken Livingstone. We talked about the role of the global tumult of 1968 in the development of the politics of the five, the extraordinary racism that Diane Abbott has faced since entering parliament, and whether the current Labour leadership think there are votes to be gained in joining in in attacks on Britain's most important black politician. We also talked about the importance of  Salvador Allende's Popular unity government in Chile to the five and how their admiration for Allende contrasted with their view of the eastern bloc during the Cold War. Finally, we touched on the current conjuncture and what the future might hold for the remaining four rebels.

Morgan Jones, LabourList‘An absorbing history of Labour's radical left.' Jason Cowley, Observer‘The Searchers should be studied closely by anyone with a stake in British politics.' Patrick Maguire, The TimesIn the great revolutionary year of 1968, Tony Benn was a respectable Labour minister in his forties, and he was restless. While new social movements were shaking up Britain and much of the world, Westminster politics seemed stuck. It was time, he decided, for a different approach.Over the next half century, the radicalized Benn helped forge a new left in Britain. He was joined by four other politicians, who would become comrades, collaborators and rivals: Ken Livingstone, John McDonnell, Diane Abbott and Jeremy Corbyn. For Andy Beckett, the story of these admired and loathed political explorers - both their sudden breakthroughs and long stretches in the wilderness - is the untold story of British politics in modern times. As he reveals, their project to create a radically more equal, liberal and democratic Britain has been much more influential than electoral history might suggest, and can be seen from the shape of our city life to the causes of our culture wars. For their many detractors, this influence was and remains dangerous: a form of extremism that must be stamped out. Veteran British film director Ken Loach nominates the 17th century radical pamphleteer and and leader of the Diggers, Gerrard Winstanley. Born in Wigan in 1609, Winstanley began writing religious pamphlets after his cloth selling business in London went bankrupt and he was forced to move to the country. There his 'heart was filled with sweet thoughts ... that the earth shall be made a common treasury of livelihood to all mankind', for 'the great Creator Reason, made the Earth to be a Common Treasury... for Man had Domination given to him, over the Beasts, Birds and Fishes; but not one word was spoken in the beginning, that one branch of mankind should rule over another." Winstanley began to dig a nearby wasteland, calling on others - rich and poor -to join him in the digging, which he believed would start a revolution and feed the poor. His ideas were radical, communal, spiritual and deeply challenging. Within a year the Diggers had been aggressively expelled from their site of occupation. The late Tony Benn called the Diggers, 'the first true socialists', but Winstanley has also been claimed by anarchists and environmentalists. This is a transfixing evening in the company of a national treasure. Thoughtful, hilarious and at times emotional, Margaret reflects on the changes she's seen since first becoming an MP in 1974. Is politics less sexist than it was then? Is the Labour Party? Margaret has played a prominent role in modern Labour history for nearly 50 years and her stories about Tony Benn, John Smith, Tony Blair and others illuminate the story of the Labour Party like never before. Plus some great stories about caravanning with Special Branch... MMT is a tool that can be deployed by socialist governments that issue their own currency, like the UK. Carlos Hernandez has written a compelling book that will be a crucially important guide for socialists in the 21st century. Fiat Socialism provides the perfect riposte to right-wing sceptics who always ask, "How are you going to pay for it?" when proposals for a good society are put forward. Fiat Socialism puts flesh on the bones of Tony Benn's comment, "If we can find the money to kill people, we can find the money to help people."#MMT #Socialism #FiatSocialism #ChrisWilliamsonSupport Resistance TV and The Socialist Labour Party:Twitter: https://twitter.com/SocialistLPFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/SocialistLPInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/socialistlp/Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/resistancetvJoin Socialist Labour Party https://www.socialistlabourparty.org/Follow Chris Williamsonhttps://twitter.com/DerbyChrisWCheck out more Videos from Resistance TV:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GXySk...Last weeks Episode   • 75 years of Nakba...  Get ready for the most exciting and thought-provoking show of the week! "It's the complicated ones I enjoy the most." Matthew Parris Tony Benn, MP from 1950 to 2001, packed so much into a long career. He renounced the peerage inherited from his father, served in the Labour governments of both Harold Wilson and Jim Callaghan, led the Stop the War Coalition from 2001 and became pretty much the country's pre-eminent rock star politician in older age. Comedian Ellie Gibson says she was a Tony Benn groupie and saw him speak many times. A brilliant orator and prolific diarist, he was by the 1980s distrusted by many in his own party, and a bogey figure in the right wing press. Contributors include ex Labour MP, Chris Mullin, and his biographer, Jad Adams; plus rare early archive of Tony Benn himself talking about his constitutional fight to give up his inherited peerage. Ellie Gibson is one half of the Scummy Mummies podcast duo. The producer in Bristol is Miles Warde

For this special TMR Movie Roundtable, we welcome back the veteran British journalist John Booth—who joins Mark Campbell, Antony Rotunno and Yours Truly—for an extended four-way conversation on the highly perceptive and well-made British TV series from 1988 entitled A Very British Coup. Based upon the 1982 novel of the same name by journalist and Labour politician Chris Mullin, A Very British Coup follows the career-in-office of fictional UK Labour Prime Minister Harry Perkins (brilliantly played by Ray McAnally) whose radical policies ruffle the feathers of the Establishment. Opposed from its inception by deep-state actors in the media, intelligence services and civil service—and indeed by political and corporate interests on the other side of the Pond—Perkins' democratically elected left-wing government and Perkins himself quickly become the targets of smear campaigns and "dirty tricks" aimed at undermining him and reshaping his government along establishment lines. But Perkins is no fool; this working-class "man of the people" is also a shrewd observer of elite power, and the forces that oppose him find themselves locked in a contest for dominance that will not easily be won. Join us as we discuss the series and consider similarities to, and differences from, the real-life Labour leaders Jeremy Corbyn (who referenced Harry Perkins in a recent interview) and Harold Wilson (against whom the "secret state" plotted in the 1970s). My guest this week is Craig Braddick, a British born race caller from Arizona who I have interviewed previously in this podcast series. Craig is a specialist on the history of TV sport and here we focus on various sporting events in the monochrome era from 1948-1966. We begin by discussing the way in which sport has always been on demand and has united people in a community. Craig talks about pre-Second World War women's amateur sport which came to prominence in the 1948 London Olympics. There is very little of the 1948 Olympics in the archives and it is important for giving us the genesis of what we are used to in TV sport coverage today. We then look at the 1953 FA Cup Final, the oldest soccer broadcast in the archives, and how it is atmospheric of a different era. This is when TV for the first time became the first choice over radio for experiencing sport. We discuss Roger Bannister and the 4 minute mile, and how it was broadcast on a programme called Sportsview which was the first show in the UK to use an autocue. Then we have the launch of Grandstand in 1958 and (later) its football results teleprinter. It introduced people to regional sports events. Craig talks about its presenter David Colman's expertise and how the programme covered the Grand National for the first time in 1960 which again united people around television. We look at the 1964 Olympics which was broadcast by satellite and the 1966 World Cup final when BBC and ITV worked together to share facilities. It was the first time slow motion was used in real time in football coverage and gave other countries the chance to develop their own coverage of football. It was also a time when football and politics came together, epitomized by Harold Wilson, and we learn why Tony Benn scuppered the chance for the BBC to screen the World Cup in colour. At the end of the interview we find out how Craig plans to draw on all of this knowledge and expertise in the future. Please note: Opinions expressed are solely those of Chris Deacy and Craig Braddick and do not necessarily represent the views or opinions of the University of Kent.

Chris Mullin served from 1987 to 2010 as a Labour MP in the British parliament. During that time, he kept a daily diary of his observations, which has since been published in three acclaimed volumes. The diaries trace the rise and fall of Tony Blair's "New Labour." Mullin himself was associated with the party's left (he edited Tony Benn's book Arguments for Socialism and was the only member of Blair's government to vote against the Iraq war) but found himself trying to tread carefully to use the powers of government effectively. His diaries raise valuable questions about how an ordinary person trying to do good in government can negotiate the thorny ethical dilemmas that come with being close to power.Mullin is also the author of the novel A Very British Coup (adapted into a popular miniseries), about what happens when a socialist government takes power in the UK, and is known in Britain for his crusading journalistic effort to free the wrongly accused Birmingham Six, a case from the 70s that is still making headlines to this day.In this conversation, we talk about the frustrations of navigating bureaucracy, the catastrophe of Blair's support for the Iraq war, and whether a socialist government would indeed face the kind of existential threats that Mullin has written about in his fiction.Edited by Tim Gray.

Tony Benn served as member of parliament for both Bristol South East and Chesterfield, in a parliamentary career that lasted from 1950 until 2001. Benn's transformation from technocrat in the 1960s to left-wing iconoclast in the 1980s is one of the most important in the history of the Labour Party. Benn proved a major source of inspiration for Jeremy Corbyn, but has become a hate figure for those in Labour closer to the centre ground of British politics, who regarded him as an electoral landmine. My guest for this conversation is Tom Clark, contributing editor at Prospect Magazine and senior fellow at the Joseph Rowntree Foundation.

Close examination of the events leading up to the Iraq War 2003 and detailed analysis of the decision making process by Professor Vernon Bogdanor FBA CBE http://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/the-iraq-war-2003 Britain held her first national referendum in 1975 - on whether we should remain in the European Communities, forerunner of the European Union, which we had joined in 1973. The result was a two to one majority for staying in. Party attitudes were almost the opposite to what they are today. The Labour government favoured staying in, but the party in the Commons and in the country did not. The Conservatives were enthusiastically for staying in. The nationalists in Scotland and Wales favoured leaving. The referendum was not held solely because the Labour government sincerely wished to discover the views of the British people, but to paper over the cracks of a divided party; nor did the two to one majority indicate widespread popular enthusiasm for Europe. Britain was at that time, economically, the sick man of Europe. One of Britain's European Commissioners, Sir Christopher Soames said that it was no time to leave a Christmas club, let alone the Common Market! In addition, there was considerable deference towards the pro-European political establishment - Harold Wilson, Roy Jenkins, Shirley Williams and Edward Heath. Neither of these factors are present today.Populist politicians such as Tony Benn and Enoch Powell tried to stimulate a grass-roots nationalist movement against Europe, such as had defeated the pro-Europeans in Norway in a referendum held in 1972. Such movement did not materialise. Could it do so today? Are there any lessons to be learnt from the 1975 referendum? The transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the Gresham College website: http://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/the-iraq-war-2003 Gresham College has been giving free public lectures since 1597.
