Jesus asks us to "love the person who hurt me" or "turn the other cheek." But when we see what Jesus asks of us our first response is..."But I CAN'T..." Today we will see that yes you can!

Guest Speaker Danny Unruh teaches Jesus' commands of "turning the other cheek" as would understood by his audience, the Jewish people.
Its more complicated than most Christians seem to understand. Turning the other cheek does not make a Christian a pacifist, nor is obedience the same as being empathetic. There is a far deeper meaning to the Scripture than what the churches tell us.
What happened in the Mid-East that motivated the second Catholic Crusade? Why did a monk, Bernard of Clairvaux, preach the Crusade? What happened to the armies of King Conrad and King Louis VII along the way over and down to Constantinople and Cappadocia? How did the centuries-old suspicion between Orthodox and Catholic Christians play out during the second Crusade? I examine and answer all those questions in this episode. I also offer an extended reflection on Jesus' famous words, "turn the other cheek." What did he really mean in his first-century context? I also offer an extended thought-piece on why I do not believe either the Bible or Jesus himself were against the godly use of violence and/or war. Oh, and I wonder, what is the etymology of whore? Is it possible that the Arabic word houris—sexified concubines waiting in the afterlife—played into the history of the word whore? Come laugh and think with me about our faith in Christ.

What do you do when you're on social media and people are making fun of our heavenly father saying things like God doesn't do anything for us saying things like God doesn't exist how do you react to that? Do you get upset? Do you have an altercation with them verbally or do you turn the cheek and pray for them let's talk about that.
An eye for an eye, turn the other cheek, do not resist the one who is evil. What do all of these phrases mean? What was the Messiah teaching us in Matthew 5:38-42, was he contradicting the Law? Imagine if what he was teaching is the exact opposite of what we have been taught he meant, something that could change your world.

Question from a reader: “Doesn't Jesus tell us to turn the other cheek? And to forgive seventy times seven times? And doesn't the love chapter in I Corinthians 13 tell us that love keeps no record of wrongs and it suffers long and it never gives up? So, doesn't the Bible basically tell us that we must take abuse in a marriage and stay under it?”If my work has been helpful to you in any way, feel free to leave a little tip:https://www.venmo.com/u/Elisabeth-KleinFisherresources:∂ God Hates Divorce? blog: https://elisabethklein.com/blog/god-hates-divorce-thats-only-part-of-the-story∂ get 10% off your first month of BetterHelp online therapy:betterhelp.com/allthattosay∂ if you're not safe or if you or your children are being physically or sexually hurt, please set up a safety plan (https://www.thehotline.org/plan-for-safety/create-your-personal-safety-plan/) and contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline (1-800-799-7233)∂ marriage assessment:http://bit.ly/marriage-assessment∂ Surviving in a Difficult Christian Marriage e-book: https://bit.ly/Elisabeth-Klein-books-on-Amazon∂ 3-month e-course, Better Way to Stay:https://bit.ly/better-way-to-stay-marriage-ecourse∂ if you're in a difficult marriage with biblical grounds to divorce and you're trying to decide whether to stay or go: my 5-week e-course, Decision Time (now PAY WHAT YOU CAN): https://bit.ly/decision-time-ecourse
Stefan Molyneux's lecture explores Jesus's teachings on non-retaliation, particularly "turning the other cheek," within their cultural context. He discusses the balance between forgiveness and the need for accountability, sharing personal experiences with toxic relationships. Molyneux advocates for measured responses to aggression, emphasizing the importance of clear communication and recognizing the character of others through generosity. He concludes by highlighting the relevance of these principles in modern interactions, promoting integrity and thoughtful engagement.GET MY NEW BOOK 'PEACEFUL PARENTING', THE INTERACTIVE PEACEFUL PARENTING AI, AND THE FULL AUDIOBOOK!https://peacefulparenting.com/Join the PREMIUM philosophy community on the web for free!Subscribers get 12 HOURS on the "Truth About the French Revolution," multiple interactive multi-lingual philosophy AIs trained on thousands of hours of my material - as well as AIs for Real-Time Relationships, Bitcoin, Peaceful Parenting, and Call-In Shows! You also receive private livestreams, HUNDREDS of exclusive premium shows, early release podcasts, the 22 Part History of Philosophers series and much more!See you soon!https://freedomain.locals.com/support/promo/UPB2025

Over the last few weeks, Jesus has been correcting the scribes' and the pharisees' misunderstanding and misapplication of the law. In some cases, they were leading people to do the EXACT OPPOSITE of what the law required! To understand this correction, then we first need to understand the original law and the ways that the scribes and the pharisees distorted it.

Most people are living in spiritual, financial, relational and emotional ruin. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus gives us a vision for how we were made to live and serves as our guide on the pathway back to flourishing. As we walk the path with Jesus this Fall, we are going to find that the way into flourishing is different than most people think. In fact, in many ways it is the exact opposite of what we are told in our cultural moment. Jonathan Pennington describes it this way, “The Sermon's answer to the human-flourishing question is that true human flourishing is only available through communion with the Father God through his revealed Son, Jesus, as we are empowered by the Holy Spirit. This flourishing is only experienced through faithful, heart-deep, whole-person discipleship, following Jesus' teachings and life, which situate the disciple into God's community or kingdom.” D.A. Carson calls the Sermon on the mount “Jesus' confrontation with the world.” Each week we will look at a broken vision of flourishing and compare it with Jesus' vision in the Sermon. We will use Jesus' mnemonic device “You have heard that it was said, but I say to you” in order to compare and contrast the world's vision of flourishing with Jesus' vision of flourishing.

In a world of retaliation and getting even, Holy Spirit is filling us with courage to resist evil with humanizing love. Jesus invites us into a life that disrupts cycles of violent retaliation with surprising acts of nonviolent resistance that humanize both the oppressed and oppressor, making space for restored relationships.
I greet you in Jesus' precious name! It is Thursday morning, the 4th of July, 2024, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today. We start in the Book of Exodus 21:24: “…eye for eye, tooth for tooth,…” Then we go to the Gospel of Matthew 5:38-39. Jesus says: “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.' But I tell you not to resist an evil person. But whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also.”I want to tell you a story that touched me very deeply. There was a dairy farmer in the USA. He was born in 1913. His name was Demos Shakarian and he came from an Armenian background. He was the biggest dairy farmer in America in those days, and he met the Lord Jesus Christ, fell in love with Him and he thought the Lord was calling him to be an evangelist. So he bought a massive tent and started preaching but it was not his calling. So what he realised was that he was an instrument by God to set up meetings for other people to preach at. He formed the Full Gospel Business Men's Fellowship International. It went right around the world touching businessmen. But he tells the story that he set up his tent and had a visiting evangelist - a crooked evangelist. After this man had preached the Gospel, he made the appeal for money and people came forward and they gave lots of money, and he made another altar call and he did it again. After the meeting, they went around the back of the tent and they were sorting out the finances and Demos Shakarian was going to give the evangelist a generous gift and he said, “I just need to square up all the debt and then I will give you the money that is left.” He said, “No ways! I want all of it, the whole lot!” Demos Shakarian turned the other cheek, didn't he? He gave him the bag of money and the evangelist disappeared. A few years later, Demos Shakarian was sitting in town in his pick-up and he saw a tramp walking up the road in rags. He looked at that tramp from a distance and he thought, “I recognise that face” - it was the evangelist. I want to say something to you: Don't worry if someone has short-changed you or done you down. Pray for that person, commit them to the Lord, and move on with your life. The Lord is the one who will do justice. Jesus bless you and have a wonderful day,Goodbye.

Jesus says on the sermon on the mount to turn the other cheek. Most people understand and interpret this as a posture of a doormat to be taken advantage of, but this is not what Jesus is saying! How can we stand up for ourselves when we've been wronged? How can we seek justice in our world without taking justice into our own hands? Sermon on the Mount E15 – In Matthew 5:38-42, Jesus offers wisdom from the Torah about retaliation, justice, and nonviolent resistance to injustice. He references a series of laws in Exodus 21, Leviticus 24, and Deuteronomy 19, all of which contain the familiar language of “eye for eye, tooth for tooth.” Jesus reveals the surprising wisdom within these laws, using real-life scenarios that would have been familiar to oppressed Israelites living under Roman occupation: turning the other cheek, giving your cloak, and going the extra mile. In this episode, Jon, Tim, and Michelle discuss how these actions can open up our imaginations for boldly standing against injustice in creative, nonviolent ways.View more resources on our website →Timestamps Chapter 1: Cultural Background of “Eye for Eye” (00:00-20:45)Chapter 2: The Meaning of “Do Not Resist” (20:45-28:13)Chapter 3: Turn the Other Cheek (28:13-39:20)Chapter 4: Give Up Your Coat (39:20-45:30)Chapter 5: Go the Extra Mile (45:30-01:01:00)Referenced ResourcesThe Gospel of Matthew: A Socio-Rhetorical Commentary by Craig S.
