Kool Moe Dee came on the scene in a group the Treacherous Three. Kool Moe Dee was also part of the first major rap battle in history. It's Just Begun....that song should have been used in the Roxy battle scene according to the Beat Street dancers. As one of the all time great breakdance tracks, it would have been epic. Hollywood always wants to have its own way though, and Arthur Baker's Breakers Revenge became iconic despite that overruling. That factoid is one of many that I forgot to offload during this episode. I was delirious about doing Beat Street for weeks and still couldn't get it right. Kool Moe Dee making his first appearance on film in the Christmas Rap with the Treacherous Three, sans his trademark sunglasses that never came off again. Let's just say that I couldn't hit the ass end of a bull with a hand full of sand. It went on and on and on, reminiscing in our nostalgic glow over a movie that felt like an artifact-like documentary of a golden era. Admiring one of the only truly American art forms beyond jazz. Created partly due to a lack of access to the disco phenomenon during a particularly bleak time in New York City. The Boogie Down Bronx is a real thing, and 1520 Sedgwick Avenue is its mecca. Watch the movie, read some hip hop history, see Steven Hager's Village Voice article on September 21st 1982 called "African Bambaataa's Hip Hop", search his script "Looking For the Perfect Beat", image search Jamel Shabazz.....I need to lay down.

Introduction: In this episode, we delve into the life and legacy of Sylvia Robinson, the music executive and producer who brought hip hop to the masses and changed the music landscape forever. Sylvia was the founder of Sugar Hill Records and was responsible for producing some of the biggest hip hop hits of all time. Segment 1: Ed Anderson, a DJ at the station, was asked to play the song during the last hour of his show. The song became an instant hit and went viral, with people calling the station to ask what it was. The song was a commercial success and peaked at number 36 on the Billboard Hot 100, number one in Canada and the Netherlands, and number three in the UK. Segment 2: Sylvia changed the name of her label from All Platinum to Sugar Hill Records after the success of the Sugar Hill Gang. She went on to sign successful acts such as the Treacherous Three, Funky Four Plus One, and others. Sylvia even produced some of the music videos for her artists, including working with a young Spike Lee. She signed Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five to create the hit song "The Message", which was considered one of the greatest songs of all time by Time Magazine. Segment 3: Despite the success of Sugar Hill Records, not everyone was happy about it. The originators of hip-hop didn't understand how three inexperienced MCs not from the birthplace of hip-hop could create its first commercial success. Sylvia knew that for the evolution of hip hop, she had to put out fun and great music, but she also had to get out what was going on in the streets. Segment 4: Sugar Hill Records fell on hard times due to competition, and financial and legal problems. Many of the founding hip-hop pioneers were going commercial, and new players in the game, including LL Cool J, Run DMC, and the Beastie Boys, were entering the scene. Sylvia and her husband Joe would divorce, and Sylvia would create a new label with a group from New Jersey called the New Style. The group would resurface two years later under a new name, Naughty by Nature. Conclusion: Sylvia passed away in 2011 due to heart failure and was 76 years old. In 2022, she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame due to her contribution of bringing hip hop to the masses. Gràcies a tots ells i a la Laia i en Roger, he pogut editar aquest programa a temps. Un programa especial Nadal que en un principi havia de ser més llarg i amb molta més música, però al final he decidit reservar-les per a anys vinents. The impulse to share my findings while collecting Christmas music led me to this podcast, and it led Bill Adler to Christmas Jollies, an annual Christmas mix that he has made and distributed to family, friends, and folks in the music industry since the mid-1980s.  Adler started his career in the music industry as the director of publicity at Def Jam Records and Rush Management from 1984-1990, so while his tastes are much broader than simply hip-hop, hip-hop Christmas music by Kurtis Blow and Run-DMC play a meaningful part in his own Christmas music story.  We talk about their Christmas songs today, along with the self-imposed parameters that anyone who makes mixes will recognize immediately. We also talk about some of the songs that he has and hasn't included on mixes in recent years including songs by Joey Ramone, Irma Thomas, and Aaron LaCombe.  The episode ends with a track that I incorrectly identified in the episode as "Santa Rap." I have thought of the song as "Santa Rap" for so long that it didn't occurred to me to check the title of the Treacherous Three's track from from the Beat Street soundtrack from 1984. If I had done so before I packed up my recording gear, I might have correctly identified the song as "Xmas Rap." In the episode, I said that you can email me to get a special, listeners-only 2021 Christmas mix. Send me an email at alex@myspiltmilk.com and I'll send one your way.

Warning: Explict Content – The Boom Bap Radio duo of Masta Talka and the eternally Angry Engineer close out 2015 in frank fashion with a funky Christmas show laced with plenty of..um, Xmas cheer and of course classic Hip Hop. We lament the terrorist attacks in San Bernadino, Ca., pool our cash to get DMX out of more legal trouble and try to figure out how typing “lardass” into an iPhone auto corrects to Mrs. Kanye West. Talk about your Christmas bulbs…Hey, ‘tis the season. We of course burn the yule log with Run-DMC, the Treacherous Three, Trez Lorenz, Alicia Keys and Eazy E. So put the kiddies to bed and pour yourself a healthy helping of egg nog – It’s Boom Bap Radio’s holiday hoe down and it’s so, so nasty.

In what was the first show in September, so the Boom Bap Radio Crew did one just for the kids. J-Crush, The Angry Engineer Masta Talka and the C.O. got really Ol. School by playing some hot, fire from the 80’s. Still not over the recent rash of Police Brutality, the crew questioned new shootings of unarmed Black men in South Carolina and Ohio as well as a beating of an unarmed pregnant woman in NYC. We also welcome baby Charlotte Clinton into the world, England into the bombing campaign against ISIS and hint at the Douchey McDouche Bag winner for September. Afrika Bambaataa and the Soulsonic Force, Run-DMC; The Treacherous Three; Cold Crush, Kurtis Blow and the Fatback Band gave funky lessons in Rap history for the kids. Hey, why are we bombing a 1970’s Saturday morning kid’s show again? – It’s Boom Bap Radio.

Old 2 the New/New 2 the Old IV - We celebrate Mother’s Day in this show with a look back at the beats that built the culture. - Original beats from the likes of Sly and the Family Stone, Labi Siffre, The Jefferson Airplane, Brick and Taana Gardner, morph into familiar Hip-Hop classics from Queen Latifah, Jay Z, Black Sheep, Dana Dane and the Treacherous Three, to name a few. We also giggle at the comedic stylings of Los Angeles Clippers’ owner Donald Sterling and V. Stiviano, that silly rabbit; discuss gardening tools and Monica Lewinsky; and listen to the catchy ditty from the 7 GOP members of the new Benghazi panel. Hey Dr. Dre! Do you have a case quarter? The story of MellowManAce begins in Cuba… Born under communism in Cuba, MellowManAce became his families' ticket to freedom and passport to the United States. At that time in Cuba, having a child meant a family became eligible for an exit visa. “I was the third born and my number hit the lotto, although we didn't get to leave until four years later due to politics. My family gives me the credit for being here enjoying our freedom in the U.S.” Upon arriving in America, the family was greeted in Miami, moved to New Jersey and ended up in South Gate, California on Cypress Avenue where it all began. MellowMan first got into rap music in 1983 after hearing The Treacherous Three for the first time. When I first heard rap, I knew I had found my calling.” Writing as many rhymes as he could and cutting demos with his brother Sen Dog and B-Real, he still hadn't found his exact niche within Hip-Hop. With a lot of persistence and hard work, he perfected his bilingual style. “I was ecstatic to realize I could fulfill my dreams and represent for my Latino people all in one!” Ulpiano Sergio Reyes (MellowManAce) and older brother Senen Reyes (Sen Dog) formed a rap quartet DVX (Devastating Vocal Xcellence) with Lawrence Muggerud (DJ Muggs) and Louis Freese (B-Real). After a few years MellowMan was signed by Delicious Vinyl and then Capitol Records to launch a solo career and sell over more than 2 million units worldwide. The remaining three members formed the group Cypress Hill, Host @ericzuley
