The 2015 Final Four matchup between 1-seeds Kentucky and Wisconsin was a rematch of the classic national semifinal game from 2014. The Wildcats came into the game with a perfect 38-0 record and it marked the first undefeated Final Four team since the UNLV team of the early 90s.   While the 2015 roster for the Wildcats was almost completely different, the Badgers returned the core of their team including player of the year Frank Kaminsky and rising draft prospect Sam Dekker.   That aforementioned Kentucky roster was loaded and headlined by Karl Anthony Towns, Devin Booker, Tyler Ulis, the Harrison twins, Willie Cauley Stein and Trey Lyles. This was the matchup we waited all year for and it delivered in spades.   Now we go back and watch it all over again.    On this episode we discuss: Ben watching this game in Vegas originally John Calipari vs. Bo Ryan Did Kentucky have too many good players? The Harrison twins' role down the stretch Wisconsin's uniforms The veteran Wisconsin team vs. upstart UK. Which is the better way to build a program The benches below the court are terrible The refs with some terrible calls down the stretch A game of runs Final Four on TBS over CBS? On today’s episode, we recapped the Suns’ 111-99 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers, in which strong performances at the guard spot helped make it a more competitive and entertaining game than we’ve become used to. Before that, we started the show with another update on the tank standings after another Grizzlies victory last night, which puts the Suns three losses ahead of both Memphis and Atlanta for the top lottery spot and a guaranteed top-three pick. Tyler Ulis and Shaquille Harrison continue their strong play, and though it hasn’t been enough to lift the Suns without their two best scorers, it may have earned them consideration for a roster spot next season.  Josh Jackson continues to earn more ball-handling responsibility for the Suns this year, though his jump shot continues to be a concern, especially based on the awkward new catch-and-shoot form he’s shown recently. Does his development change how the Suns should build the roster going forward? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

It appears change is coming in the frontcourt and backcourt for one or more of those three. In addition, for a game in which Alan Williams was making his return from injury, it was Tyler Ulis who suddenly looked spry and had his best game of the season, saying after the game that it is his own health that has made the biggest difference lately. We end the podcast by looking at who might be on the roster next season, especially with a top-3 pick nearly locked up after another Grizzlies victory last night. Warren were all held out with injuries. Not only did Shaquille Harrison continue to break down the door of opportunity with a career-best outing, but Davon Reed and Tyler Ulis (a double-double after DNP's for a month) also shined on this afternoon. From a negative standpoint, Elfrid Payton had his third consecutive subpar outing. In his 10 starts with Phoenix, he has a total plus-minus of -152. The second-worst Sun after Payton is Jackson at -96. That is a -52 difference! What does this say about Payton and his future in Phoenix as he continues to slump this past week? Also, the co-hosts chatted about Dragan Bender, who came alive in the second half from beyond the arc. However, we ask the question about how unique of a situation this is with a top-five pick. Bender is slow developing, specifically as a driver to the rim, but is this going too slow? Finally, we talked about one main prospect this week: Collin Sexton of Alabama. As he continues to shine in March, Sexton's name will likely be one that rises in the general public's eye up until the draft. We weighed on his overall ceiling plus his fit alongside Booker in Phoenix. Is he a possible trade-up candidate? How has Elfrid Payton changed the floor spacing for him? With another 30 point effort last night, Booker now has 17 such instances so far this season. Shaquille Harrison, who is on a 10-day contract from the NAZ Suns, once again took Tyler Ulis' usual minutes. Harrison even saw crunch-time minutes and nearly converted a game-sealing steal on Damian Lillard, who finished with 40 himself including a game-winner with 0.9 seconds. Are we approaching the end of Ulis in Phoenix? On the NBA Beat

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 26, 2017 27:39

Eric Bledsoe, Brandon Knight and Tyson Chandler have already been shut down for the remainder of the Phoenix Suns’ season, but Fox Sports Senior NBA Writer Andrew Lynch isn’t convinced full-on tanking is in the team’s best interest. Andrew’s appearance comes fresh off 20-year-old Devin Booker’s history-making 70-point output in a loss to the Celtics Friday night. He contextualizes Booker’s rare night and breaks down many other integral Suns issues, such as Eric Bledsoe’s projected NBA future, the disappointing Alex Len, rookie Marquese Chriss’ potential and Phoenix’s approach to this June's draft.2:31-2:57: “In this season, Suns fans needed something like that, I think. And it’s just perfectly fitting – I tweeted this last night – that it came in a loss. All of my favorite Suns memories are in losses. I know people want to maybe belittle the achievement a little because he was taking so many shots, because they were fouling, because they were calling timeouts…70 points is 70 points in an NBA game. Period.”4:54-5:45: “Last year, Devin Booker looked like this savior-level phenom, the kind of player that Phoenix has needed since Steve Nash’s departure… This year, he’s taken a huge step backward, and I think that’s because there’s a lack of structure around him. Earl Watson is a great guy to get the players playing as hard as possible for him, guys love him, he’s a great locker room guy. And I love all that [but] it doesn’t seem like there’s necessarily a design for how this team improves moving forward as a unit and as individuals. And I hate to say this because it’s one of the worst things you can say about an NBA coach, but it’s borderline just rolling the ball out there and letting them play basketball. “6:46-7:00: “[The 76ers’ tanking] very rarely has succeeded, but at least the scaffolding is there to build something larger. With the Suns, you just have a bunch of people running around with hammers and masonry tools going, ‘Hey, this is fun. Bob the Builder. This is fun.’”10:00-10:41: “[The injury history] is concerning in so much as he’s going to take a step back for sure. He’s not going to be an All-Star-caliber point guard when he’s healthy within the next year or even two maybe, but he uses angles so well. Part of his athleticism is his ability to rub his guy off of a screen at the exact right angle to create the maximum amount of space or to come off of a screen and maybe have his big flip it at the last minute. So he uses that geometry of the game so well, I’m not as concerned about a slip in athleticism with him as I might be with someone like Russell Westbrook…Bledsoe’s a little sharper than that.”15:38 - 16:32: "When you have those kinds of young players, it comes down to defining roles for guys. Someone like Tyler Ulis has maybe had the best development arc on the Suns this year...Because his role has been defined, because the expectations have been set, he knows what he's supposed to do. He's flourished."22:25-24:09: "Guys, he is so good…I almost shouted, "my man!" I love Tyler so much...Tyler brings that same leadership dynamic [as P.J. Tucker] even as a young dude. He comes in and he is immediately the guy that everyone in the locker room is looking at...Obviously there’s a ceiling on his capability because of his height…With that said, he is so smart, he is such a fundamental player, he is so good on defense. He doesn't just know where opposing ball handlers want to go with the ball. He knows how they want to get there...His hands aren't in passing lanes; they're in dribbling lanes. I haven’t seen anything like it honestly since going back to Stacey Augmon or Gary Payton...I am not going to put a cap on what I expect out of ...Learn more about your ad choices. DFSR’s Doug Norrie and James Davis break down a five game NBA slate for FanDuel and DraftKings. The two most interesting games, from a DFS perspective come early with Toronto-Miami and Brooklyn-Phoenix. The Heat will be without Dion Waiters again which puts Goran Dragic, James Johnson and Josh Richardson firmly in play. Toronto will be without a suspended Serge Ibaka leaving (potentially) more shots for Demar Derozan, PJ Tucker and Cory Joseph.  The guys also break down a Suns-Nets game that should see Tyler Ulis, Devon Booker and others with big upside against a terrible Nets’ team.  All of this and more.  Learn more about your ad choices.
