Todd Cherches: “No one has all the answers – we're all just trying to figure it out. That's actually very freeing. I tend to quote Socrates, which always annoys my wife, ‘All I know is that I know nothing'. The more we realize what there is to know the more we realize the less we know, especially with things changing faster than ever these days. There's also the classic joke that ‘teenagers think they know everything'. Then they go away to college and come back four years later only to realize how smart their parents are. ‘It's amazing how much my parents learned while I was gone!' My father used to say, ‘People are so consumed with possessions, the nicest car or whatever. The only thing that really matters in the overall scheme of things is people'. I'm working as an executive coach and I teach leadership at NYU and Columbia universities. It's all about people. So even in my work, I don't focus on strategy or finance or anything related to the business side of things. I focus solely on communication: giving feedback, how to lead, inspire, and motivate people. So that mantra of 'people are the only thing that matters' is also ingrained in the work I do. The title of my book, ‘VisuaLeadership' is spelled with only one L. Most people don't even notice the L in leadership is missing. The idea behind that is, 'who you are and how you lead is inseparable from the lens through which you see the world'. It's important to see the world through the lens of other people in the spirit of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. When we envision a world, not just as we see it, as other people see it, we can help others to make their visions come true as well. The rainbow colored eye on the cover of my book represents how each of us see things differently.” * Have a listen as I interview my special guest, Todd Cherches.
In this episode of Work Matters, Thomas Bertels welcomes Todd Cherches to discuss Visual Leadership. Todd is the CEO of BigBlueGumball, a leadership development and executive coaching firm. He is also an award-winning professor and lecturer at NYU and Columbia University and the author of "VisuaLeadership: Leveraging the Power of Visual Thinking in Leadership and in Life."He defines visual leadership as applying visual thinking and visual communication to the practice of leadership. By painting a picture, leaders help people see what they're saying and create mental movies to increase understanding throughout the world of work.Todd unpacks tools from his book, “VisuaLeadership,” and stresses the importance of getting the best out of people, not the most. In doing so, leaders build engagement, passion, and purpose which contribute to higher intrinsic motivation and performance. He breaks his tools into four categories which include:visual imagery – explaining though pictures, props, drawings, or anything you could take in through the eyemental models and frameworks - simplifying and compartmentalizing the complexmetaphors and analogies – using the familiar to make the invisible visiblestorytelling with a bonus for humor - good for lightening the mood, boosting engagement, and reducing stressFrom there, Todd describes his Passion and Skills Matrix which demonstrates how leaders can help employees find their “sweet spot” where both are high for maximum engagement and performance, and unpacks his R&R tool - providing teams with the resources they need and removing roadblocks.Drawing on his own experience with a horrible boss, Todd reveals the secret for how to become more effective at giving feedback: clarity, empathy, listening, passion, and purpose. He describes why providing employees with autonomy is critical to increasing engagement and fostering innovation while stressing the importance of hiring self-disciplined employees.Todd concludes by noting how essential visibility, voice, and value are to make employees feel seen, heard, and connected. They say, "a picture is worth a thousand words". Isn't it true? Psychologically our brain is wired to remember pictures easier and with much more clarity than listening to words or reading them from a page. Then why do spend so much time carving out the right message with words when we could be enhancing our leadership and lives by creating pictures that can be seen in our mind. Author Todd Cherches joins us this week on A New Direction and gives us practical guidance and tools to help us leverage the power of visual thinking in leadership and life from his best selling book VisuaLeadership. Todd Cherches' book "VisuaLeadership: Leveraging the Power of Visual Thinking in Leadership and in Life" is not your typical "leadership" book. Todd who is an NYU and Columbia University award winning lecturer opens our eyes and minds to creating pictures for our audience and followers so that we can make deeper connections, have more clarity, and make our points easier to remember. Whether we actually use visual images or we paint the images through stories in the minds of those who we lead. VisuaLeadership is an excting way to approach communication whether in leadership or just living life. As a leader, have you ever struggled to communicate your vision? Are you puzzled when others don't quite understand what you are trying to convey? Then this episode is for you! Today my guest is Todd Cherches, author of VisuaLeadership, and he'll help you leverage the power of visual thinking, not only in your leadership role but also in life. Todd is the CEO and co-founder of BigBlueGumball LLC, an NYC-based management and leadership consulting, training, and executive coaching firm. He is also a two-time award-winning Adjunct Professor at the NYU School of Professional Studies, in their Division of Programs in Business, where he teaches the top-rated graduate course, “Leadership & Team Building” for their Human Capital Management master's degree program. In this episode, you'll learn how to: Change the way you think and communicate as a leader using your "mind's eye" Easily leverage the power of visual imagery, mental models, analogy, storytelling and humour to supercharge your communications skills Become a more innovative thinker, better presenter, and effective coach And a lot more! Identify the Resources and Roadblocks I came up with the RnR method, which means Resources and Roadblocks. What are the resources you need to do your job and what are the roadblocks that stand in your way? It really helps to know this. First of all, people appreciated being asked and that I cared enough to stop telling and to start listening. Second, if someone lacked resources to accomplish something, we're able to brainstorm and find a solution for it. VisuaLeadership Everyone has a viewpoint based on your background, upbringing, culture, and life experiences, and you see certain things in a certain way because that's who you are and that's what you know. But there are other perspectives that we may not be aware of what's outside our own experiences and background. And so VisuaLeadership allows us to start opening our eyes to other ways of looking at things. Applying the concept of VisuaLeadership in the workplace People are not mind-readers. So often, we say something and it's so clear in our mind what we want and what we need, but we're not able to communicate that effectively to others. So we need to have a picture in our mind and think about how we can bring it to life so that people can see what we're saying and deliver what we want and what we need. Today, I interview Todd Cherches and to describe Todd as a shy child would be an understatement! As a very tall yet introverted boy, he hid in the back of the class and was afraid to speak up-- or even to answer the telephone at home.He was quiet, a bit antisocial, and generally preferred to just be in his own company. However, as you'll see in this interview, Todd shares three experiences that helped him discover the boldness in himself when it comes to seizing once-in-a-lifetime opportunities. In the humble beginnings of his career, he moved past the curtain and into a brave and insightful conversation that influenced his direction and attitude. Later, he saved a leadership presentation and stepped up to the plate to deliver it, and in return got to experience firsthand the help and encouragement of the exceptional leaders present. Later still, on the verge of giving in to his introversion when feeling defeated at a conference, he walked through a very special door that would entirely change the trajectory of his entire life. Today, Todd is a professor of leadership, teaching at NYU and Columbia. He is a trainer and coach who teaches leadership skills and presentation skills.__________________ Todd Cherches is the CEO and co-founder of NYC-based executive coaching firm, BigBlueGumball, as well as a three-time award-winning adjunct professor of leadership at NYU and Columbia University. Not only is it packed with great ideas on communication, but Todd's sense of humor also makes reading and learning a lot of fun. We all know that a picture is worth a thousand words. And a metaphor can be worth a thousand pictures. It is one of the reasons why the best presenters use images instead of text and stories instead of statistics. If you want to excel in communication, excelling in visual thinking is necessary. The foundation of any communication is getting others to "see" what you're saying. Communicating visually – whether through the use of visual imagery, mental models, metaphor, or storytelling – will enable you to more effectively get an idea from your "mind's eye" and into the head of another. Our guest this week is Todd Cherches, who is the author of "VisuaLeadership." We talk about:Importance of visual thinking.Connection of visual thinking with the visual-leadership.When visual thinking works, and when it doesn't.Power of metaphors and side-effects.Todd's book on visual leadership.Todd is the CEO and co-founder of BigBlueGumball, a New York City-based management consulting firm specializing in leadership development, public speaking, and executive coaching.
