In most organizations, innovation as a practice doesn't have the same level of legitimacy as other teams and practices have. And part of the reason is institutional blindness.Unfortunately, institutional blindness is a real thing. As soon as a new employee joins the organization, they get too focused on their KPI, and they start to lose one of the most important aspects in innovation, context. So in this episode, I am talking with Neil Sequeira about innovation in large organizations. In this episode, we talk about:What is the business side of innovation? Why is it important to have a high-level view of your organization?Institutional blindness.Problem with KPI in innovation.Organization design not being supportive of innovative thinking. The biggest challenge in innovating in a large company.Should you have a separate innovation team? The problem of not being heard. Is it possible to make innovation legitimate? How to tackle this challenge?Neil is a connector, a joiner of dots - people, ideas, and things - to create and deliver value. Content creation doesn't make someone a thought leader. And talking about some cool technology or ideas doesn't make someone an innovator. I strongly believe that technology is not innovation, and innovation is not all about technology. Innovation is a very different ball game. It doesn't start with technology. It starts with you. Your purpose, your strengths, and the change you want to make in fellow human's lives. So, in today's episode, I have Saleema Vellani joining me from Washington DC. In this episode, we talk about:About the overlap between innovation and entrepreneurship. What is hybridpreneur? Why is the technology associated with innovation than real innovation? What is your definition of innovation? What does innovation have to do with connecting dots?Associative thinking and innovation. Why you must start with "what" and not with "why?"Future-proofing capabilities.Saleema is an entrepreneur, keynote speaker, an adjunct professor, and the author of Innovation Starts With “I”. If you have ever worked in the office environment then you must have heard someone saying, "Well, this is the way we do things around here." There are so many things people do that are not necessarily part of the rule book. And yet, what you do, how you do can impact the culture you want to build. These undocumented ways of doing things in a team environment are unwritten ground rules. And they do have a significant impact on the so-called documented cultural rule book. Whether your goal is to improve communication, foster innovation, or drive change in your team, you cannot not pay attention to UGRs. So in this episode, we will talk about unwritten ground rules and for that, I have Steve Simpson from Melbourne, Australia on the show.In this episode, we talk about:The UGRs conceptIf they are unwritten, then how would you know they exist and influence them? How do they tie with the culture of your team and organization? Can people coming from different backgrounds influence UGRs? How?How can you change the common language and nudge it to the positive side?Shift in UGRs (if any) since Covid.Examples of UGRs for an innovative culture.Based in Melbourne, Australia, Steve Simpson is an international speaker and culture change agent. For some people, podcasting has somehow become a fad or a go-to format for content creation. However, there is a lot. Well, that's the question I am asking Richard this week.We talk about:What are a few different and legit reasons to start a podcast? How to utilize it for networking? What are the different styles of a podcast show?Pros-cons and challenges of different styles. How are these styles differently applicable based on your goals? Diversity and Inclusion are not just HR topics anymore. They affect every functional area in the organization. And, when any topic has such a widespread impact, it is imperative to understand it further. Not only to understand but see it from a practical point of view. To discuss this crucial topic this week, our guest is Sarah Tabet. As Sarah puts it, "Inclusion is not the same as diversity. Diversity is easy; inclusion isn't."We talk about:Why does D&I interest you? How does it help in making an organization more innovative? How does it help in a technology focussed environment? Any examples from your work at Schneider that could support your thoughts? People talk a lot (rather too much) about D&I, but very little change happens in reality - why do you think it is so? What is your suggestion to improve it and have D&I in practice? What can an individual do by themselves, or is it only organizations to do anything? Why did you write the book?Sarah is an HR professional with more than a decade of international experience across the Middle East and Africa, based in Dubai. In addition to her current HR Director global role within Schneider Electric, she has been an active advocate of Diversity and Inclusion in the HR and D&I space to influence and promote change in our world. She has been invited to speak locally and regionally on topics that include the Future of the workplace, HR Digital Transformations, Diversity and Inclusion, HR, and Women empowerment. In January 2020, she was granted the Women in Leadership Award (WIL) award for Diversity and Inclusion from the MICE quotient. If you are talking about the future, then you need the language of the future. The language of the future is vision. But no matter what your vision is, it has to be practical. So, what is a vision? If you ask a hundred people, you will get a hundred answers or maybe more. I was surprised when Dr. Oleg Konovalov said that only 0.1% have a vision as per his research. Many others are either faking it, or they simply don't have it! I had to find out more. So, I invited him to the ICT Podcast. We talk about:What is vision, and why is it important? What is the difference between vision and wishful thinking?Personal ambitions are not a vision; why?Why many leaders falter when executing their vision?Important parameters that strengthen vision.About his book, "The Vision Code."Oleg is a thought leader, author, business educator, consultant, and coach with over 25 years of experience operating businesses and consulting Fortune 500 companies both in the UK and internationally.Oleg is on the Thinkers50 Radar, recognized as #1 Global Thought Leader on Culture by Thinkers 360, is #1 Global Leading Coach (Marshall Goldsmith Thinkers50), and has been named one of the Top 10 most inspiring global thought leaders by The Excellent.Having been named ‘the da Vinci of Visionary Leadership' by many leading authorities of our time, Oleg Konovalov helps companies create and execute their vision, diagnose and treat organizational diseases, and maintain a strong, productive corporate culture and achieve superior business performance. He is the author of The Vision Code (2021), LEADEROLOGY (2019), Corporate Superpower (2018), Organisational Anatomy (2016), and Hidden Russia (2014).His research identifies entrepreneurs' and managers' strategic needs in corporate culture, leadership, and he uses corporate diagnostics to enable them to drive their companies to success.Oleg received his doctoral degree from the Durham University Business School. There are many ways to categorize or define the type of a business. One of the ways I prefer to do that is by putting them into two categories. The first type is faceless business. It mainly operates on a brand name. The second type of business is with a face. Their brand is a person, owner, or the founder of that business. And you will notice that our affinity or attraction is less towards faceless businesses and more towards businesses with a face attached to them. It is one of the key reasons why many people are fans of Apple because of Steve Jobs, or Tesla because of Elon Musk, or Disney because of Walt Disney. The key here is to understand one important thing. And it is this: even if you have a great product, service, or idea, but if you can't communicate it remarkably at scale to the right audience, you are quite simply underperforming with what is possible. Unless you are the key person of influence, things could be quite difficult for you.So how do you become a key person of influence? That is what my guest this week, Glen Carlson, is talking about. We talk about:Why pitch? What does a great pitch mean? Different types of pitches and what are the key elements of each of themImportance of mission or ideology business. How and why the book is not the only thing that you need to focus on.The concept of 7-11-4About 5P, the importance of each and the sequence. The fallacy of profile before product.Glen is an award-winning entrepreneur and co-founder of Dent. When a mountaineer is scaling a mountain, the amount of weight they carry directly impacts how quickly they reach the summit. The same goes for communication. Whether it is cluttered or simplistic will decide its effectiveness. But clutter can come in many shapes or forms. It may be physical, as in having a lot of stuff. Or it may be a shunned confrontation that you are carrying as a burden or baggage for too long. It may also be present in the form of undue assumptions and biases. When we approach a conversation with a negative state of mind or assumption, it can be problematic. So, how do we identify this clutter? And once we identify it, how do we stay in control. Is it possible to get rid of it, and if yes, how do we do that? To talk about all this, I had a conversation with Saahil Mehta. We talk about:What is de-cluttering?How does a cluttered mind affect communication? Why picking up your mobile phone right after you wake-up is bad for your mental space and overall communication? How do you take control of your day and mental state? What does clutter result in? Why? The horse and horse-rider analogy; how it applies to your mind and you?How to identify clutter in your mind and work on it to remove it?About Saahil's book, "Breaking Free."Saahil is an Entrepreneur, author, and a Passionate Mountaineer. Over the last decade, Saahil scaled 4 of the world's tallest mountains - a dream he harbored since childhood. But only once he was able to conquer his self-limiting mindsets & habits could he re-invent the complete spectrum of life- from mental focus to physical excellence and from beautiful relationships to efficient environments.Paradoxically, on the one hand, Saahil leads his life with absolute ‘ahimsa,' the art of non-violence, and evangelizes this virtue for all human beings. Still, when it comes to personal mastery & performance, he loves to destroy his limits and consistently conquer himself. With his debut book BREAK-FREE, he shares his personal journey of how he transcended all odds to scale the summits of his dreams, and how you too, can dream up new personal summits every day, once you have mastered the art of decluttering life by adopting his fool-proof process of breaking-free…About the Podcast:ICT Podcast all about innovation, communication, and technology – a few key areas that are super important in today's world. All the progress and innovation rely on at least some level of appropriation. Because innovation happens when two or more unrelated ideas collide and something new is created. But, innovation demands both the quality as well as quantity of collisions.Quality is driven by knowledge, diversity, intelligence, inclusion, entrepreneurship, type of stimuli, and appropriate criticism level. Quantity, on the other hand, is all about frequency and volume. So, when there more people in a physical space, more interactions happen. If you spend more time communicating, there is more stimulus and more collisions. Although physical office space is an excellent way to increase collisions' frequency and quality, it is not the only way.To discuss innovation, transformation, and the future of work this week, we have Robert Hillard as our guest. We talk about:Virtual office practice at Deloitte. Some of the challenges in virtual working environments. What does human-centered design mean? How does a virtual working environment affect the innovation quotient?Ideas around "collision innovation."What would and should change in innovation space post-pandemic?How are SMEs adapting to the future of work? What are some challenges and solutions?Robert is widely recognized as a leading thinker concerning the information economy. His many years of experience as an innovator and leader in consulting in Australia and overseas have seen him play a leading role in the technology profession with a particular focus on information.Robert has held many eminent roles, including leading Deloitte Consulting in Australia, serving on Deloitte's global board (Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu Limited), serving as Chair of the Australian Information Industry Association, and being appointed to the Digital Expert Advisory Committee advising Prime Minister & Cabinet in Australia. He has been involved in many public forums and presentations related to the information economy. We all know that a picture is worth a thousand words. And a metaphor can be worth a thousand pictures. It is one of the reasons why the best presenters use images instead of text and stories instead of statistics. If you want to excel in communication, excelling in visual thinking is necessary. The foundation of any communication is getting others to "see" what you're saying. Communicating visually – whether through the use of visual imagery, mental models, metaphor, or storytelling – will enable you to more effectively get an idea from your "mind's eye" and into the head of another. Our guest this week is Todd Cherches, who is the author of "VisuaLeadership." We talk about:Importance of visual thinking.Connection of visual thinking with the visual-leadership.When visual thinking works, and when it doesn't.Power of metaphors and side-effects.Todd's book on visual leadership.Todd is the CEO and co-founder of BigBlueGumball, a New York City-based management consulting firm specializing in leadership development, public speaking, and executive coaching.
