A woman was spotted in the stands of Super Bowl 59 poking a Patrick Mahomes fetish-voodoo doll with a pin, causing some to speculate that this was the reason for the team's, and the quarterback's, terrible performance. While some scoff, others are serious. In fact, the New Orleans Saints were the first, and maybe the only, NFL team to officially employ voodoo practitioners for assistance in winning a playoff game in 2000. A ritual featuring a large snake was performed  at the 50-yard line, and at locations outside the super dome, which had been built on a cemetery. As for this year's game, Taylor Swift's presence, which has resulted in a 13-3 record for the Chiefs, prior to the big game, has generated a new form of the magical practice termed Tayvoodoo. This, of course, shares a relationship with the accusations of witchcraft and sorcery that the singer has faced over the last five years. According to Mambo Brandi C. Kelley - an initiated Voodoo Priestess and owner of Voodoo Authentica - there may be some truth to Tayvoodoo too: “When you have someone that is so in the public eye and comes with her own gigantic fan club, you're not only dealing with Chiefs fans, you're dealing with Taylor Swift fans all in a group just throwing that energy of love."Of all the famous celebrities at the game, Lady Gaga also performed a benefit song for the victims of disaster prior to kickoff, and was referred to as the ABRACADABRA singer throughout. In an interview with ELLE, she talks about the struggles of life, saying that the song is “about facing the challenge of life and the challenge of the night and finding the magic in it all." She attempts to break those spells in the song: “I'm fighting against it with everything… I'm serving against it.” She was asked about the lady in red, contrast with the white lady, and later says “the song has a spell in it.” As for ABRACADABRA, this charm has been used for ages to cure disease and to repel acts of poison and witchcraft! It is strongly associated with inverted triangles - as we saw at the Super Bowl halftime show - since the letters are written downward to dissolve distress. It is also linked directly with ABRAXAS, the golden age god!-FREE ARCHIVE (w. ads)SUBSCRIPTION ARCHIVEX / TWITTER FACEBOOKWEBSITEPAYPALCashApp: $rdgable EMAIL: rdgable@yahoo.com / TSTRadio@protonmail.comBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/tst-radio--5328407/support.

Tonight I'm actually bringing you three separate stories, but they are part of a single series titled “The Supernatural Vigilante Association”. It's a dark story, very well written, and has an interesting noir feel to it that I would not have expected for creepypasta about anti-heroes with superpowers. In week three of our super special spooky season series on Halloween monsters, we discuss the fascinating and wild world of witches! Was Julia Brown a Creole Healer, Seer, Voodoo Priestess, or a Green Witch, or was she simply the closest thing to a doctor readily available to the isolated logging town of Frenier? Is this another tale of the demonization of a woman too powerful for the social constructs of her time? After discussing her life, we take a deep dive into the long history of witchcraft. From its first mentions in the Bible to the repeal of the Witchcraft Act in 1735, the relationship between witches and the establishment has been a long and arduous tale of prosecutorial discrimination. We pick up with the development of Wicca in 1926 and follow its development right through to present day. The episode wraps up with our Top 5 witch movies of all time!Campfire: Tales of the Strange and Unsettling is created for adult audiences only. Unearthed: Memphis

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 16, 2021 40:53

Since it's spooky season, I thought we could talk a little about a Memphis urban legend… What do you think is one of the most well known urban legends? I'd probably say, Voodoo Village.  That's exactly what I was thinking. And I think pretty much everyone who grew up here or has lived here for any amount of time has heard about or even ventured out to the community known to locals as Voodoo Village. So what are some of the rumors you've heard about this place? I've heard that when you drive there, they pull a school bus behind your car so you can't leave. They come out and chase you with bats and machetes. There are dead animals hanging from trees. There are weird yard art objects and masonic and voodoo symbols all around the property. It's all just very strange and spooky.  I've heard all those things too, and even believed them for a very long time. Admittedly, I was too freaked out to actually go all the way there to see for myself. I believe it was my friend Neeraj and I who ventured that way late one night, but we eventually turned around and came home.  But years later, I had read a little about the so called “Voodoo Village” and learned it was actually called St. Paul's Spiritual Holy Temple. I have also read it as St. Peter's, but I do believe it's St. Paul's.  As it turns out, the history behind St. Paul's is more complicated than we thought. To understand it, we have to start with Memphis's beginnings. But I promise we'll get back to it.  Most of the information I got for this episode was from a book by Tony Kail called, appropriately, “A Secret History of Memphis Hoodoo”. This really is a fantastic book. It's informative and a quick read. It made me want to dig deeper into the subject, thus this episode's topic. It's a really cool book. I suggest checking it out. You can find it in the local section at Novel. Memphis is known by many names. The Bluff City. The Home of the Blues. The Birthplace of Rock n Roll. The Cotton Capital of the World. The BBQ Capital of the World. But it's also called Mojo City.  The word “mojo” comes from an object used within the practice of Hoodoo. Memphis's Hoodoo history is not extremely well known or frankly understood, that is of course, unless you're actually in the know.  So we started this episode talking about voodoo and now we're talking about hoodoo. What is the difference? Voodoo (Vodou), meaning spirit, is considered a religion or religious practice. It is similar to Hoodoo, and in one video I watched, it said that Hoodoo was born out of Voodoo. It was brought from Africa, through Haiti, and then to America during the slave trade. It is a blend of Catholicism and African cultural and traditional beliefs. The type of voodoo we are going to be talking about for this episode is what is generally practiced in New Orleans.  There is structure and hierarchy in Voodoo. There is one God, but they do not interfere with life. But there are numerous spirits that do, and they call these spirits Loa or Lwa. Each Loa has its own area of life that it is responsible for, for example agriculture or money. Practitioners connect with these spirits when they need their assistance.  There are priestesses and priests in Voodoo. A popular Voodoo priestess was Marie Laveau. She made a name for herself by helping people from all walks of life in New Orleans. She was a hairdresser by day, but her other “side hustle” was to help people achieve their desires through her voodoo practice. She was known to help black, white, rich and poor people.  And even in her death, she is still helping people. There is a rumor that if you make a wish on her grave, and your wish comes true, you owe her a present. I, admittedly, made a wish on her tomb, and while it took some years, that wish did come true. So I actually owe her a present the next time we're in New Orleans. I'm sure many people have heard of this famous Voodoo Priestess.

The self proclaimed Voodoo Priestess of the Sacrifice Sect, 17-year-old Clementine Barnabet just might have been the first African American serial killer. Clementine confessed to a totally out-of-this-world story that included taking responsibility for at least 17 murders. But did she really kill all those people?  Or could she have been innocent? Put down your axe, kick back and noodle on this string of brutal murders that plagued towns among a railroad connecting southern Louisiana with Texas.   We dig up Clementine's past, debate her innocence, and offer up some alternate theories of her crimes.

Twenty episodes so far! Wow! In random learnings, video conference calls are better with games and walking lets John experience his neighborhood’s nature better than when he used to run like a madman. The theme for this week was “What makes your atoms sing?” What comes really natural to you that when you picked it up you felt like a fish swimming in water? Or, when you do something, it feels so good and feels like you’re in the right place to be. Your senses are awakened and heightened and you feel like you’re vibrating higher than before. This can even come about with different types of music or smells. It can even happen with the type of work you do during the day and how it helps you grow personally and professionally. Patti and John give examples from their lives on what makes their atoms sing. This time, the Microstory was all about Patti and her solo trip to New Orleans. Most specifically, her day on a Voodoo tour where she visited the grave of Voodoo Queen Marie Lavoie, visited a Catholic Church that recognizes a Voodoo Saint, and had a chat with a Voodoo Priestess about Gris Gris and Juju.

On this 100th edition of the Yahoo Sports College Podcast, Dan Wetzel, Pete Thamel and SI’s Pat Forde travel to New Orleans for the National Championship and dive right into the madness by previewing the LSU vs Clemson matchup from a French Quarter Voodoo shop. Before the guys get to the battle of the Tigers, big news broke out in the state of Mississippi when Mike Leach docked his pirate ship in Starkville as the new head coach of the Bulldogs. How will the wild man fare in the SEC and is there a more entertaining in-state coaching duo? (5:10)Later, Pat, Pete and Dan break down the title game, ask how each defense will stop these two high powered offenses, and which prop bets you should take. (20:20)Finally, the podcast welcomes Voodoo Priestess Catherina Williams, the oldest living psychic in Louisiana, to predict Monday’s matchup before they ask her some even more important questions like ‘who will ultimately win the Chicken War?’ (41:49) See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
