Have you ever been to a therapist or a coach? Are you curious to know what the difference is? Did you know that although they are different modalities, there are more similarities than you might think? In this episode, I brought back my dear friend and colleague, Molly Carmel, a psychotherapist and certified Life Designer® coach, to dive deep into a fascinating topic that often sparks curiosity and confusion: the difference between therapy and coaching. Join us as we unravel these two transformative paths toward personal growth and mental well-being. Molly and I had such a real and raw conversation about authenticity, doing the inner work, the surprising power of coaching, and why she chose to go through the Life Designer® Coach certification program. Meet Molly Carmel Molly Carmel, LCSW-R is a leading addictions and eating disorder therapist and Founder of The Beacon Program (Beacon by MC), which offers individual and group solutions to help people break free from their destructive relationships with food and dieting. Known for her irreverent, “straight talk, no chaser” attitude, she's also the author of the innovative book Breaking Up with Sugar: A Plan to Divorce the Diets, Drop the Pounds, and Live Your Best Life and the host of the podcast, What You're Craving. Molly has made it her life's mission to help people find a sustainable solution to the battle of obesity and related eating disorders. After battling an eating disorder for over 20 years and finding no solution in available treatment, she began her professional path and has never looked back. In addition to her extensive training in Substance Use and Eating Disorders, Molly is intensively trained in and has an undying love for Dialectical Behavioral Therapy. She is also a certified Life Designer® Coach, trained shaman, Reiki healer, and certified Tibetan bowl singing practitioner. How Does Coaching and Therapy Differ First off, I like to say that coaching and therapy are like PB & J; they go beautifully together and are respectfully a distinct healing modality. While therapy and life coaching share some common aims, their approaches differ. Both support self-insight and positive change. However, therapy focuses on addressing psychological challenges and trauma and diagnosing mental health issues. There is a greater focus on one's past and understanding, expressing, and healing past traumas and challenges. Life coaching complements therapy by starting with the client's existing strengths and helping them set and achieve personal and professional goals for the future. There is a greater focus on the present and future, using the past to learn, grow, and harvest lessons. Coaches take a forward-moving, solutions-oriented, growth-oriented approach. The coaching relationship centers on accountable, empowered clients ready to create the life they want. However, coaches recognize when clinical therapy is the right step. The two modalities can work powerfully together, with therapy helping people overcome obstacles from the past and coaching propelling them toward the life they aspire to create. Ultimately, both therapy and coaching are powerful tools for transformation. Thinking of Becoming a Spiritual Life Coach? Want to do something that fulfills a higher purpose? In this episode of What You're Craving, Molly connects with Rachel, a member of the Breaking Up with Sugar community. Rachel shares her journey and her current struggles, dealing with imposter syndrome and the fear of detaching even a little bit from her eating habits. She explains that even the thought of being a little more flexible with her diet makes her experience fear and shame. Rachel shares that weighing and measuring food helps her feel in control, and although she has had overeating episodes, she has been on a successful journey, which makes her even more afraid of falling off the wagon. The key question here is: how to feel safe when you reach a certain level of progress? Perfectionism can be tricky, even more for someone trying to heal their relationship with food. Molly encourages Rachel to expand her identity as someone trying to heal instead of someone trying to follow the plan perfectly. Tune in to learn more! Episode Quotes “The only anesthetic for shame is going to be food. It's a profound rejection. It's literally what the brain is trying to protect us from completely.” “Funny thing about diets: they don't take into account the human spirit, they don't take into account biodiversity, and they don't take into account even the healing of the endocrine system.” About Molly Carmel Molly is a leading addiction and eating disorder therapist and the founder of the BeaconProgram, which offers individual and group solutions to help people break free from their destructive relationships with food and dieting. In this solo episode of What You're Craving, Molly gives her opinion on a topic that has been getting some attention lately: injectables for weight loss. First and foremost, we need to acknowledge that it is a medical intervention, and it needs to be treated that way. And guess what? There is nothing wrong with asking for medical support to lose weight. On the other hand, it won't help if the person taking it stops paying attention to their eating habits and neglecting their health. Cultivating healthy habits, having a balanced diet rich in protein and fiber, and exercising still play an essential role in this process. Molly invites you to see injectables for weight loss as another tool in the toolbox, not a magic wand that will solve all the problems. And if you are considering making use of this tool, don't forget to weigh the pros and cons, and most importantly, don't treat it like a quick fix. Tune in to learn more! Episode Quotes “Maybe it's a beautiful thing to get some help. Maybe we don't really know what we're talking about and maybe we need to set aside all of these prejudices that diet culture has put into us that the only way it works is through hard work.” About Molly Carmel Molly is a leading addiction and eating disorder therapist and the founder of the BeaconProgram, which offers individual and group solutions to help people break free from their destructive relationships with food and dieting. In this episode of What You're Craving, Molly connects with Jean Ferrari, a member of the Breaking Up with Sugar community. Jean details what it was like to join the group, what led her to make this decision, and how she could identify that her eating habits were part of something related to an eating disorder. Jean wasn't sure if she had an eating disorder or even if the program was a good fit for her. At one point, she decided to join the community nonetheless. She realized that something was off when she started noticing unusual habits like binging, eating unhealthy foods daily, and using alcohol as a coping mechanism. When Jean realized that the program was a real deal and was a considerable investment for her, she decided to take the program more seriously and try to get helpful insights from the other participants. Even on vacation, Jean followed the plan and connected with the group. Consistent progress is way better than perfection. Tune in to learn more! In this episode of What You're Craving, Molly connects again with clinical psychologist Dr. Alisa Kriegel. Today, they discuss the importance of self-care in regulating the nervous system and how to identify the tools to get into a calmer state. There is sometimes a misconception that self-care is an act of selfishness but in reality, is an act of self-love. Being present and enjoying the moment is one of the most important exercises to calm the nervous system. But it's a practice. And as with every practice, it takes time. An important component of this topic that needs to be addressed is multitasking. Multitasking has a considerable impact on the nervous system, and it makes us uncomfortable, even if we don't realize it. People do many things at once due to various reasons, but the main one is fear of not being productive. We are inherently used to chaos, and sometimes we forget to take a break, despite being extremely important for the nervous system. Tune in to learn more! Episode Quotes “Self-care starts with the hardest place to be: yourself.” “We all have responsibility for self-care and for putting ourselves first in terms of what we need to be effective in the world to feel good.” Connect with Dr. Alisa Kriegel Website: www.alisakriegel.com Podcast: Let's Talk about Sex, Really Connect with Molly Sign up for CAMP SELF-CARE (July 26th - 29th) - find what may be the missing link for you to be living the life you deserve - learn more at: mollycarmel.com/camp-self-care. If you are in the process of healing your relationship with food, you might have periodic thoughts that say: "Why is this taking so long?” or “Why don't I feel better yet?” These are all valid questions, but there is this misconception that we won't feel good until we reach the finish line. There is no finish line. Healing your relationship with food - or whatever you are working on - is a journey, and you need to start enjoying it. In this solo episode of What You're Craving, Molly encourages you to quit the impatience and let go of these racing, unsafe thoughts. These thoughts are provoked by perfectionism, are rooted in fear, and reflect what might not have worked in the past. Molly shares a few tips to overcome these beliefs: practice gratitude and be thankful for the good little things you have in life and how far you have come. Be of service to others who are also going through tough times and have their own battles to overcome. Accept that these overwhelming thoughts are just thoughts. Episode Quotes “When you're trying to make a big change, history suggests that you're not going to do it. Unfortunate truth: the best indicator of future performance is past performance.” “Whatever it is you're struggling with, you're in a relationship with it.” About Molly Carmel Molly is a leading addiction and eating disorder therapist and the founder of the BeaconProgram, which offers individual and group solutions to help people break free from their destructive relationships with food and dieting. Join this episode of What You're Craving as Molly chats with Michelle Shapiro about how the nervous system affects our relationship with food. Michelle Shapiro is a Registered Dietitian with an integrative and functional approach, and today she explains more about this concept and why it is so important to understand this mind-body connection. Michelle shares that when someone comes to her with symptoms of a chronic illness, the first thing she does is stabilize the environment in which that person lives instead of jumping to adjusting the person's diet or eliminating their favorite foods. That is what she did with Molly. For instance, she encouraged Molly to focus on breathing techniques and less screen time to treat her symptoms. Michelle also talks about how the mind and the body are intimately intertwined and that food is just a component of how they correspond. Also, sometimes the nervous system can impact different diagnoses, such as binge-eating disorder. On that note, Michelle explains that our brain wants short-term results instead of long-term results, which is why binge eating makes so much sense for many people. Tune in to learn more! Episode Quotes “Food is not the game. Food is a piece of the puzzle, and it can be extremely healing or extremely instigating.” “Binge-eating is caused by physical symptoms just as much as it's caused by mental conversations.” “There is no healing if your nervous system is not regulated.” Connect with Michelle Shapiro Podcast: Quiet the Diet Website: www.michelleshapirord.com Instagram: @michelleshapirord Connect with Molly Sign up for CAMP SELF CARE - find what may be the missing link for you to be living the life you deserve - learn more at: mollycarmel.com/camp-self-care Join my mailing list for info (+ discount!) on our SELF LOVE CAMP coming in August, my Sunday Love Letter, and a free mini masterclass: mollycarmel.com/signup You can purchase the Breaking Up with Sugar course here: mollycarmel.com/buws Become a part of the Breaking Up with Sugar FB Group: facebook.com/groups/buwsbook Come hang with me on social media! In this episode of What You're Craving, Molly welcomes back Felicia from the Breaking Up with Sugar Community. She shares her current struggles in healing her relationship with food at the same time she is being treated for cancer. According to Felicia, the community has been helpful, with people caring for and checking up on her. Felicia also shares that on numerous occasions, people would offer her solutions to help her quit the addiction, but she explains it does not work like that. An addicted person often thinks that what works for others will not work for them because they are "beyond that point”. Or they are too afraid that that specific solution will, in fact, work, so they back away. In addition, Felicia shares more about the obstacles of someone treating cancer and treating addiction at the same time. She explains that it is common to feel like you “have the right” to give in to random cravings just because you are going through tough times. However, she encourages people that may feel this way to not give up. Episode Quotes “I haven't had a chance to really have this big, beautiful life without the food in the way. And I want that for myself.” “The truth is life is going to happen - the good stuff and the bad stuff - and it is going to pass. And the reality is as long as I am breathing, and I take another breath, and I stay sugar and flour free, I have an opportunity to be a participant in my own life. I don't have to be a victim.” About Molly Carmel Molly is a leading addiction and eating disorder therapist and the founder of the BeaconProgram, which offers individual and group solutions to help people break free from their destructive relationships with food and dieting. In this episode of What You're Craving, you will listen to Leanne's story and her journey so far. Molly and Leanne talk a lot about the idea of being honest with the people around us, such as our friends and family who are supportive of our journey. When we are on a mission to quit an addiction - especially food addiction - we might think that sharing our struggles with others will make them leave. Leanne is living proof that is not the case. It is important to be open with people we trust. But it is also essential to tell the truth to people you know will accept it, no matter what. On another topic, Leanne talks about the importance of having a community, a group of people she can trust - like the Breaking Up with Sugar group. Episode Quotes “I went to the group, I did the homework, I listened, and read, and really immersed myself in it but at the same time I realized that was this part of me that was just hanging on for dear life to my previous ways.” “If we are trying to establish safety and if you were to drop a bunch of weight like you would do on a quick-fix diet, I would actually think that would be rather disorienting. If you think about the weight as a shield.” About Molly Carmel Molly is a leading addiction and eating disorder therapist and the founder of the BeaconProgram, which offers individual and group solutions to help people break free from their destructive relationships with food and dieting. In this episode of What You're Craving, Molly connects with Lindsey Pearson. Lindsey is a Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Teacher (MBSR), a Registered Yoga Teacher, as well as a Certified Workplace Mindfulness Facilitator from Mindful Leader. She has led international workshops and is the author of the Distraction Detox: A Self-Care Workbook. Lindsey talks about the impact that practices like meditation and mindfulness had on her healing journey. Lindsey went through hard times a few years ago - relationship issues, losing her dream job, and on top of that, the pandemic - and she saw herself having to handle her biggest fears all at once. At that time, she had to make a decision: to relapse or to shift her perspective. These trauma wounds inspired her to create her company and to help others experience more peace and feel happier, even when dealing with setbacks. In addition, Molly and Lindsey discuss guilt and how it plays an important role in our journey to change and how self-compassion is the best way to live daily life. Tune in! In this episode of What You're Craving, Molly welcomes clinical psychologist Dr. Alisa Kriegel. Dr. Alisa shares her perspective on two relevant topics that have a lot of evidence nowadays: how our childhood wounds impact our relationships and how the nervous system maintains balance in the body. According to Dr. Alisa, in our relationships, we tend to repeat the same patterns we learned during our childhood. All the lessons, the emotions, and the wounds can be a significant part of how we interact with our partners. The key here is to learn to heal those wounds first instead of focusing on fixing the external world around us. When it comes to regulating our nervous system, it is fundamental to identify when we are feeling stressed, overwhelmed, or triggered. By being aware of it, we can start regulating the nervous system with a few techniques. Dr. Alisa also explains the differences between the sympathetic and the parasympathetic nervous system and the reactions we experience when we become anxious, known as fight or flight reactions. Episode Quotes “I'm a big believer that you have to understand what happened in the past. Not to blame it, but to learn from it, to understand yourself, and to use it, because that's going to dictate what comes up for you.” “Ideally, in a relationship, you can be co-regulators for each other, but what that requires is first recognizing your own nervous system responses and what helps you to feel soothed.” Related Links Anchored: How to Befriend Your Nervous System Using Polyvagal Theory by Deb Dana Connect with Dr. Alisa Kriegel Website: www.alisakriegel.com Podcast: Let's Talk about Sex, Really Connect with Molly LOTS of EXCITING stuff going on over at mollycarmel.com - Join my mailing list for a free mini masterclass: mollycarmel.com/minimasterclass You can purchase the Breaking Up with Sugar course here: mollycarmel.com/buws Become a part of the Breaking Up with Sugar FB Group: facebook.com/groups/buwsbook Come hang with me on social media! Join this episode of What You're Craving as Molly connects with Dr. Mark Horowitz. Dr. Mark is a Clinical Research Fellow in Psychiatry North East London NHS Foundation Trust (NELFT), and today he talks about depression, the different symptoms and treatments of this condition, antidepressant withdrawal, and the side effects of discontinuing it too quickly. With a background that very much matches his line of study today, Dr. Mark has been researching how depression works, what the causes and life experiences associated with it are, and the many health conditions produced by medication withdrawal. Also, according to him, the idea that depression is merely a chemical imbalance is a misconception. Dr. Mark explains that everyone has gone through some depressive state in their lives, and everyone has or will have depression to some degree. This condition can be caused when our emotional needs are not being met, and everyone is susceptible to this situation. Tune in to understand more about antidepressant withdrawal, the placebo effect, the correlation between depression and weight loss, and much more. Episode Quotes “You hear these people that have perfect lives but then depression just drops in their lap… I have never met such a person. Everybody that I have met that has been depressed has had clear reasons in their lives.” “It appears that we become depressed as a response to things in our lives.” Connect with Dr. Mark Horowitz Website: www.markhorowitz.org Twitter: @markhoro Connect with Molly LOTS of EXCITING stuff going on over at mollycarmel.com - take a look! For years, Felicia battled with her weight and tried various diets, including intermittent fasting, Weight Watchers, and low-carb approaches, but nothing seemed to work. She realized that food had become her go-to coping skill when the world felt out of control. Even when she tried to fix things with a relationship, her food issues worsened. Feeling suicidal, desperate, and with children to care for, Felicia knew she had to make a change. She borrowed money from a friend and joined the All In program, where she learned to set self-determined goals and embrace a beginner's mindset, despite her initial resistance. Through the guidance and support of the All In community and her coach, Molly, Felicia was able to redefine herself and begin to let go of the shame and guilt she felt about her addiction. Although Felicia acknowledges that her journey has not been without its challenges, she is now 66 days without sugar or flour and has seen a significant improvement in her blood sugar levels. Felicia plans to continue her growth journey by taking another round of the All In coaching program. Key Highlights The role of grief and shame in Felicia's journey Felicia's story of joining Breaking Up With Sugar & All In Tools Felicia used to stop self-harm Addressing cognitive distortions and qualifying the positives Felicia talks about her goals for forgiveness and redefining herself Felicia talks about Feelings vs. Facts Episode Quotes: “Recovery is not linear, but my brain wants it to be linear so when it's not linear, it turns lemonade back into lemons.” “I have tools. Having tools isn't my problem. The problem is when I get dysregulated, I forget the tool box even exists… Why am I okay today? It's because I used all of my tools and I had a huge support network that All In allowed me to build. I just needed somebody I trusted to tell me it was going to be okay.” Connect with Molly: LOTS of EXCITING stuff going on over at mollycarmel.com - enrollment for ALL IN INtensive Coaching is OPEN! Krista Joy Palmer is a health coach and advocate for essential oils who has a unique story of healing herself with the help of plants. Despite suffering from autoimmune symptoms that confined her to bed, hospitals, and wheelchairs for years, Krista was able to heal herself and rediscover her passion for healing others. In this episode of What You're Craving, Krista shares her journey to healing and how she now travels to teach others about the power of essential oils. She and Molly also recount a story of how Krista used her essential oils to cure an allergic reaction that Molly had on the day they met. It took Krista four years to receive a diagnosis for her autoimmune illness, during which time she had to balance raising her teenage children while dealing with her symptoms. Despite this, Krista continued to work as much as she could, focusing on what she could do rather than what she couldn't. When doTERRA approached her to help build their business and offered her a new solution for her healing journey, Krista decided to give it a try. Through doTERRA supplementation, she was able to heal more rapidly and went on to continue her work of sharing the tools and natural solutions that have helped her with others. Krista's objective is not to fix or heal anyone independently. Instead, she aims to establish an environment where those with chronic health challenges can enable their bodies to heal naturally. She believes that slowing down and simplifying our lives can aid in our health journey as it did with hers. This episode is perfect for anyone struggling with chronic illness, looking for natural healing methods, or simply interested in learning more about the power of essential oils. Tune in now to discover the gentle power of essential oils with Krista Joy Palmer. Episode Quotes: “I don't fix anybody. I don't heal anybody. When we feel like a victim of our circumstances, we often forget that we have choices. In this episode, Molly encourages you to bring yourself back to the present moment by reminding yourself that even if you feel stuck, you always have choices. Some situations can feel so painful that it seems impossible to actually have a choice in the matter, but you always do. Bad things may happen to you, but there are infinite ways that you can respond to them. Your choices are to solve the problem, change your feelings about the problem, tolerate it, stay miserable, or make the problem worse. This isn't all to say that it will be an easy road, but there is tremendous power in knowing that you don't have to just lie down and let the pain take over. This is your season of taking your power back. If a problem arises that you truly don't have control over, you still have the power to change how you feel about it. For so many of us, we have been bombarded with failure experiences, shame responses, and rejections. If you have been in these cycles, your first response is most likely to play dead, but a much more powerful option is to work to feel better about the problem. In this episode of What You're Craving, Molly wants you to know that there is so much more in your control than you think. You never have to feel like a victim in your circumstance. It is time to take your power back because if any problem coming up causes you to fall over and be a victim, there is so much of your power that is just roaming out there. Molly wants you to get it back. Episode Quote: “When you accept what is, you open yourself up to a lot of different options.” - Molly Carmel “A lot of times when you're in pain, a lot of the pain is in the non-acceptance.” - Molly Carmel Key Highlights The 5 choices we have in any circumstance What to do when you forget that you have choices The most underrated way to solve a problem Changing your perspective about a problem Learning to accept a problem What if you can't accept something because it is too painful? In this episode of What You're Craving, Molly chats with Dr. Mary Claire Haver, a board-certified OB/GYN and Certified Culinary Medicine specialist. As the creator of the nutrition program, The Galveston Diet, and author of the book by the same name, Dr. Haver has made it her mission to help women navigate the challenges of aging with a comprehensive approach to nutrition and wellness. Motivated by her own and her patients' struggles with weight gain during menopause, Dr. Haver delved into the world of nutrition, conducting her own research and pursuing certification in culinary medicine at Tulane University to better serve their needs. Molly and Dr. Haver discuss the importance of tailoring nutrition plans to the individual, focusing on non-scale measures such as muscle mass and subcutaneous fat. Dr. Haver also provides insights on how to manage chronic inflammation, how to incorporate micronutrients and supplements into one's diet, and other issues specific to women experiencing menopause. Dr. Haver's unique approach to nutrition and wellness is rooted in a focus on serving others and helping her patients age optimally. Whether you're looking for advice on managing menopause or seeking a more holistic approach to nutrition and wellness, you won't want to miss this fascinating conversation with Dr. Mary Claire Haver. In the episode of What You're Craving, Molly interviews Lucy Osborne, owner and CEO of intenSati, a method of movement, mantra, and meditation that aims to cultivate joy and self-awareness. Lucy describes intenSati as an ecstatically blissful practice that allows individuals to set intentions for their lives without judgment. Lucy shares her personal transformation through intenSati, which began when she believed that weight loss was the key to achieving her goals. However, after attending her first intenSati class, she realized that what she was craving was joy. Lucy goes on to explain that intenSati is not just about positivity, but rather about an awareness of what is present and a choice for what will come next. By becoming more self-aware through intenSati, Lucy was able to change her behavior to be in alignment with the person she wanted to be, without force or coercion. Today, Lucy is the owner and CEO of intenSati and leads her own classes, helping others to cultivate joy and self-awareness in their own lives. Lucy also discusses her experience with grief after the founder of intenSati and her former business partner, Patricia, passed away. She explains that this experience taught her the importance of prioritizing what is most important in life. Her experience with grief also highlights the importance of prioritizing what truly matters in life and knowing that life goes on, even in the face of loss. To learn more about Molly, go to: mollycarmel.com. You know when you're out to eat, and you overhear friends chatting about their biggest breakup or something juicy? Well, my friend, you're gonna feel like you were hanging with us over lunch and were eavesdropping. This was that kind of conversation that went deep but was funny, intense, and got real-deal about food and sugar addiction and how to take care of yourself in a society that eats up toxic diet culture. So, sit back, relax and definitely get your fave snack and tea as you sit in on our talk. Food Is a Relationship Game Contrary to what the diet culture will have you believe, there is nothing wrong with you if you struggle with overeating and food. So many of us are taught at an early age that food equals love. I shared my story of my Dad taking me to Dunkin' Donuts before my first day of nursery school to get three double chocolate donuts. I still remember them like it was yesterday. Molly shared about her massive struggles with bingeing, hiding food, and being the youngest one at Weight Watchers. Here's what's important to note, though, food is a relationship game and about nourishment on a mind, body, and soul level. This can be such a tough one to digest when food has acted like your BFF. This is why Molly wrote 'Breaking Up With Sugar', because it felt like such a breakup experience, not to mention detox. If you find yourself struggling with eating out of control or being unable to stop eating sugar, we get you! It was helpful hearing that most cravings last about 20 minutes or so. A good practice when you're tempted by the pan of brownies or box of cookies in your kitchen; leave the room. Call a friend who will support you. Don't let this obsession continue to steal your energy, time, and joy. The purpose is to be free and love yourself and others. Addiction Is Really About Control Addiction is about needing control, and recovery is about trust. To have recovery, you must shift what you believe. This means not just addressing the physical component but also the emotional and spiritual. I loved what Molly said, 'We row, the Universe steers.' This game of recovery from addiction, especially sugar and food addiction, requires a three-pronged approach of shifting your beliefs and relationship with your mind, body, and spiritual connection. Genuine connection, especially with others on the road to recovery, is the opposite of addiction and can make an enormous difference in your own healing. Molly Carmel suggests you look at cravings as sirens (trust me, I know all about cravings for chocolate anything) and that they're calling you to get introspective and see what you need. The Greatest Act of Self Love Forgiveness, by far, is the greatest act of self-love. You start by looking at those you need to forgive, including yourself, and make a commitment to work on adding forgiveness to your daily practice. A simple way to start is to wish the person you want to forgive well and ask that they be free from suffering and at peace. This comes from the meta meditation and is an excellent place to begin. To learn more about Molly, her Beacon program for sugar addiction, or any of her work, go to mollycarmel.com Hungry For More If you're hungry for more in life and want to stop the incessant cycle of food addiction, you might want to check out my online course, Hungry For More: Overcoming Food Addiction (juliereisler.com/shop) or my Hungry For More audio course on Insight Timer (insighttimer.com/juliereisler). Both will guide you through the 6 H's of the Hunger model for greater self-awareness, compassion, and deep change. The way we talk to ourselves and the relationship we have with our thoughts are an important part of healing trauma, stopping self-hating, and accepting our image. Sometimes, the thought patterns and the unregulated self-talk are so deep rooted in our minds that we don't even realize when they appear and, therefore, we cannot stop them from reoccurring. Can you recognize the moments when you punish yourself? In this episode of What You're Craving, Molly welcomes Adrienne Glasser to discuss addiction, trauma, and the importance of therapy experiences – and not only therapy talks. Adrienne talks about compassionate self-talk, being aware of the sensations in our body when we feel self-hate, and how to begin to treat addictions and self-image issues with just awareness. Tune in to listen to the whole episode. Episode Quote “Everything that's happening is either a form of protection or is coming from wounding. It's not anything that anyone is doing on purpose and it's just a reflection of where you've been and not who you are.” – Adrienne Glasser Key Highlights Adrienne explains how she began working as a therapist and how in her childhood she herself dealt with a lot of addiction and trauma but was also surrounded by a lot of therapy talk; It's important to know that protective systems (how we keep wanting to be safe and protected no matter what) truly have their foundation in traumas; Adrienne explains that the well-known moments of self-hate and self-doubt need to be noted to be stopped. It's also helpful to notice what physical sensations they cause in the body; Adrienne and Molly briefly discuss the diet culture and how it is the source of many rejection patterns we keep reproducing; How to find your authentic Self and reconnect with it in order to live a better and more peaceful life. About Adrienne Glasser Adrienne Glasser is a meditation spiritual teacher, psychotherapist, certified IFS practitioner, and a somatic movement therapist. Genetics play an important role in the positive aspects of our personality, the potential challenges we might have in life, and the overall tendencies of how we'll act and behave. Although our genes are fundamental for this equation, the environment in which we live and the people and places that surround us are also responsible for many things. Being aware of this balance is the first step to self-knowledge. In today's episode of What You're Craving, Molly welcomes Dr. Danielle Dick, PhD and author of ‘The Child Code'. Besides explaining the idea of genetics and biology, Dr. Danielle also touches on important points about parenting and child behavior. The way kids are raised will potentially influence their adult life and, as parents, it's important to involve children in all of the solution processes. Tune in! Episode Quote “What I mean is not that genes are destiny and DNA is destiny, that we don't have an active important role in our life outcomes, but very often we completely ignore the really important role of genes in so much in human behavior.” – Dr. Danielle Dick Key Highlights Dr. Danielle shares her background in psychology and genetics; Does willpower is enough to break an addictive cycle? How addictive behaviors can go a different route? How much does genetic play a role on the way we show up to the world and how we interact with it; How parenting influence our tendencies in adulthood; Dr. Danielle explains that, as parents, it's important to solve problems with the kids participating; Our traits, personality and unique characteristics were given to us for a reason; it's important to accept the way we were made; DNA is not our destiny. It's not something unchangeable, but also not something to be ignored; Dr. Danielle explains that half of our differences and tendencies are due to biology, and half is due to our environment; Dr. Danielle shares her thoughts on what we're all craving. Welcome to What You're Craving! In this get-to-know-you first date episode I explain the ins and outs of me - I'm a long time eating disorder and addiction therapist who has had a pretty gnarly journey struggling in a destructive relationship with food. I was trying everything I could get my hands on to heal and living a double life as an eating disorder therapist with a serious eating disorder. Now I have had this really amazing recovery where I've changed my life and helped lots of others do the same. If I could only tell you one thing, it's that healing, growth and changing your life for good is absolutely possible. My goal is to stop talking about all of the obvious things that come with eating disorders and addictions, that seem to be getting us sicker and sicker. I deeply understand that the root of our problems aren't simply the problems themselves (food, alcohol, relationships, social media), but something deeper that we're craving. And that's what we're going to do together - learn, grow, connect, laugh (a lot I hope) and truly heal. I'm also obsessed with knowing all about you, so please follow (and DM!) me on Instagram, Facebook and my website. We're in this together and the journey is going to be so awesome. Produced by Dear Media.
Check out What You're Craving, hosted by Molly Carmel - coming March 10th to Dear Media! Produced by Dear Media.
