Oh boy! It was first reported by Jason Mackey that Johan Oviedo is dealing with right elbow discomfort and currently Tommy John surgery has at least been discussed. This can't be good for a team looking to contend in 2024 who finished the season with just a 2-man rotation as is. Let's vent and get our frustrations out first, but then look to what possibly could be the solutions for this upcoming season's rotation. The MLB deadline to protect players from the Rule 5 Draft was last night at 6 pm, and the Pirates (last minute as always) decided to protect Tsung-Che Cheng and Braxton Ashcraft. We essentially called this to be exactly the case, but let's take a look at what it means now with two roster spots open after the Wil Crowe news of being released. We then touch on some other news like the Pirates hiring Justin Horowitz and the updated Baseball America Pirates Top 10 Prospect list. The Pirates Bullpen now has an MLB worst 6.58 ERA in the month of September as their 4 earned tonight lead by another bad outing from Wil Crowe gave the Pirates their 8th loss in a row.The night started with Bryse Wilson taking the mound. He came into the game with one of the worst ERA's by a starting pitcher in all of baseball, but did enough to keep this team in the game for the win. His only real damage was the 2-run shot in the second inning. The offense actually did show up to provide 5 runs. Bryan Reynolds hit his 25th home run for a career season high and Ji-hwan Bae debuted tonight getting his first MLB hit as well as two stolen bases.
What seems to sum up the Pirates season is the sense of excitement and seeing the future here and producing for it to all be taken away as the Pirates found another way to lose the game.Luis Ortiz was handed his second major league start and it was every bit as impressive as his first. However, this time doing it at Yankee Stadium versus an offense like the Yankees left Tyler feeling even more optimistic. Tyler also breaks down a little more of what he is seeing from Ortiz and if he should be given an opportunity to make this rotation next season.Big days at the plate from Bryan Reynolds, Rodolfo Castro, Kevin Newman, Jason Delay, and yes even Oneil Cruz. We probably discussed Jason Delay for much longer than Jason Delay needs to be discussed here, but there were a lot of positives from today's game especially on the offensive side.It is just unfortunate that this bullpen is very much below average to begin with and has been completely overworked. Duane Underwood Jr. and Wil Crowe have looked very bad recently and there likely is a correlation to their season's usage in all of it.
JT Brubaker took the mound today in a semi-effective outing. He wasn't showing great command but did enough to keep the Pirates in the game. Unfortunately, it was Wil Crowe with the lead who gave up 3 runs in the 9th inning resulting in a Pirates loss.Continuing his torrid hot streak is Oneil Cruz who went 2-for-4 with a home run and walk. It wasn't and hasn't been just Oneil who has been playing well recently either. Jim and Tyler discuss the rookies Rodolfo Castro and Cal Mitchell who have each played much better during their latest returns to the majors.

Today was a battle of exit velocity and which club could persevere through it. Both Bryse Wilson and Corbin Burnes were giving up really hard hit balls that were luckily being caught by each teams defense. Until they weren't.The third inning unraveled for Bryse Wilson as he gave up four straight hard hits which lead to his departure and the 3-0 deficit. It wasn't long until it caught with Burnes as well. Newman, Marcano, and Delay each got hits which was then capitalized on a 3-run 117mph home run by Oneil Cruz that provided the Pirates with the lead. Sadly, there was a lot of criticism for salivating about Cruz's three 113MPH+ hit baseballs tonight and DiNardo has some words for those people. It was also another display of why Rodolfo Castro has been so darn intriguing recently. The tools have been screaming during his latest stretch which now question if things are slowly starting to come together for him? DiNardo talks through if the extremely athletic and talented middle infield of Cruz and Castro could be for 2023.Lastly, Wil Crowe took the loss in today's game and did not look effective. Regardless of all those stats and numbers to tell you that Crowe isn't a good pitcher, I'm here to tell you just why you should ignore that and not blame Wil for what his end of season numbers are about to look like.

This week, we start the show by talking about the red-hot Baltimore Orioles and our starting lineup of podcast guests. The news this week centers around the MLB All-Star Game and Home Run Derby rosters and who we felt was snubbed. Our "Joe Musgrove Inaugural Guest Performance of the Week" goes to Tampa Bay Rays outfielder Josh Lowe for crushing the ball out of the leadoff spot last week. Then, our "Fudging Awesome Moment of the Week" presented by The Original Fudge Kitchen, goes to 11-year-old Tommy Morrissey for hitting home runs with one arm. Finally, our Top 5 for this week is the top 5 players you'd most want to see compete in the Home Run Derby (:31 - 33:47). Then, we welcome on our guest for this week, Pittsburgh Pirates relief pitcher Wil Crowe (33:49 - 1:26:43). Wil joins us and talks about his MLB debut in 2020, getting traded to Pittsburgh, transitioning from a starter to a reliever and much more. The Guardians split the double header against the Twins. We focus on game one that saw another stellar outing by Zach Plesac. I came up with an unusual theory for what has gotten into Plesac which also explains why McKenzie started to struggle about that same time. The Guardians managed to rally late to pull out the win, and one can't help but wonder how many more wins the Twins would have now if they had not traded their closer before the year began. We get into the second game which was a mess for the Guardians. Pitching wise things got out of hand, and offensively well there just wasn't any. The Twins had more hits in game two than the Guardians managed in both games combined. At least Oscar Gonzalez had a nice rebound. We talk about the surprising pitching factory that the Pirates have become. I explain why while everyone talks up David Bednar, and for good reason, Wil Crowe might be the player to consider. Wil Crowe was twice drafted by the Cleveland Guardians has more team control and would likely be cheaper to acquire. We also talk about former Akron Zip JT Brubaker and the rest of the starters in Pittsburgh who have been better than you think. Today was Liover Peguero's very first MLB start in which he got his very first MLB hit and walk. Being the youngest Pirate since Aramis Ramirez to record a hit he clearly looks the part of a free swinger, but DiNardo talks about how he came away with this game and what at bat really impressed him.Even though the Pirates scored 5 runs, the pitching didn't do its job to secure the lead. Though Jose Quintana pitched well enough, the combo of Wil Crowe and Chris Stratton didn't pitch effectively which helped Giants come away with their 37th victory. Do you put this one on Shelton? Is it just the inadequate depth of the bullpen for this loss? This one may not be like the others.

Pittsburgh rookie Jack Suwinski hit his seventh home run for the Pirates. Cubs at Orioles, PPD, Rain – Cubs-Orioles postponed by rain; makeup set for Aug. 18 The interleague game between the Chicago Cubs and Baltimore Orioles was postponed by a relentless rain shower that started shortly before the scheduled start and never let up. Wednesday’s ill-fated finale of the two-game series will be made up Aug. 18, previously an off day for both teams. This was slated to be Chicago’s only visit to Baltimore in 2022, but now the Cubs will have to make a detour late this summer in an effort to earn a delayed split. Harold Castro led off the eighth with a single against Wil Crowe and Jonathan Schoop followed with a bloop single to shallow center. Cabrera stepped in and delivered a sharp single up the middle, scoring Castro from second as Reynolds’ throw home sailed well up the first-base line. Daz Cameron doubled and tripled while driving in two runs for Detroit. Alex Faedo went 5 innings, only allowing 1 run on three hits, while striking out 7. The Cubs wrap a three-game set in Washington on Aug. 17, and the Orioles will be coming off a series in Toronto before hosting Boston on the 19th. Dodgers 4, White Sox 1 – Gonsolin, Smith, Bellinger lead Dodgers over White Sox 4-1 Tony Gonsolin improved to 7-0, tossing three-hit ball over six innings, and Will Smith and Cody Bellinger homered early to lead the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 4-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox. Smith hit a two-run drive in the first inning, and Bellinger made it 3-0 when he connected leading off the second against Johnny Cueto. That was all Gonsolin needed. The 28-year-old right-hander struck out five and walked one while lowering his National League-best ERA to 1.58. The only run he allowed was when Jake Burger homered leading off the fifth. Cueto dropped his third straight start. The two-time All-Star went six innings, allowing three runs and four hits, and Chicago’s three-game win streak ended. Today L.A. Marcus Smart added 24 points. Stephen Curry led Golden State with 31 points and six 3-pointers. He had 15 points in a 33-25 third quarter by the Warriors but was hurt late in the fourth after Al Horford rolled into his leg on a loose ball. It was similar to a play during the regular season in which Smart dove into Curry’s legs while chasing a loose ball. NBA – Net change: Warriors find Boston baskets set too high The Golden State Warriors arrived at the TD Garden for Game 3 of the NBA Finals to find that the basket they were shooting at in warmups was the wrong height. A 10-foot wooden pole was brought in to measure, and it confirmed that the basket was a couple of inches too high. It was quickly adjusted. Warriors coach Steve Kerr said during his pregame media availability that he wasn’t aware of the issue, but it wasn’t uncommon. Kerr then took the opportunity to needle the league for the finals’ late start times, saying: “It’s a good thing the game starts at midnight. The weekend is here and we need to kick things off with some cash in our pockets. After a very good night in the NHL on Thursday, Nate says he's going with the value potential for tonight's Game 7 between the Islanders and Lightning. The second segment is dedicated to a Mr. Bryan Reynolds, and how he is "back," even though I thought he was never gone. Then finally the third segment we talk about this dominant bullpen and I highlight some key contributors in it.
