Read the full transcript here. How does psychological time differ from clock time? How does a person's perception of time relate to their personal identity? How does a person's view of their past shape how they view their future? To what extent do people differ in the degree to which they feel like a single, continuous person across time? What effects does a person's perception of time have on their assessment of injustices? Why aren't there more adversarial collaborations in academia? Is academia generally politically left-leaning? How does lack of political diversity in academia compare to (e.g.) lack of gender or economic diversity? Are liberal or progressive academics openly willing to discriminate against conservative academics when, for example, the latter have opportunities for career advancement? Is anyone in the US actually calling for legal changes around free speech laws, or are they only discussing how people ought to be socially ostracized or punished for expressing certain viewpoints? And is there a meaningful difference between legal and social punishments for those who make illegal or taboo statements? Are we in the midst of an ideological war right now? And if so, ought we to quash in-group criticism to avoid giving ammunition to our ideological enemies? Academia seems to have hemorrhaged public trust over the last few decades; so what can be done to begin restoring that trust?Anne Wilson is a professor of social psychology at Wilfrid Laurier University. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: How Rethink Priorities is Addressing Risk and Uncertainty, published by Marcus A Davis on November 7, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. This post is part of Rethink Priorities' Worldview Investigations Team's CURVE Sequence: "Causes and Uncertainty: Rethinking Value in Expectation." The aim of this sequence is twofold: first, to consider alternatives to expected value maximization for cause prioritization; second, to evaluate the claim that a commitment to expected value maximization robustly supports the conclusion that we ought to prioritize existential risk mitigation over all else. Introduction RP has committed itself to doing good. Given the limits of our knowledge and abilities, we won't do this perfectly but we can do this in a principled manner. There are better and worse ways to work toward our goal. In this post, we discuss some of the practical steps that we're taking to navigate uncertainty, improve our reasoning transparency, and make better decisions. In particular, we want to flag the value of three changes we intend to make: Incorporating multiple decision theories into Rethink Priorities' modeling More rigorously quantifying the value of different courses of action Adopting transparent decision-making processes Using Multiple Decision Theories Decision theories are frameworks that help us evaluate and make choices under uncertainty about how to act.[1] Should you work on something that has a 20% chance of success and a pretty good outcome if success is achieved, or work on something that has a 90% chance of success but only a weakly positive outcome if achieved? Expected value theory is the typical choice to answer that type of question. It calculates the expected value (EV) of each action by multiplying the value of each possible outcome by its probability and summing the results, recommending the action with the highest expected value. But because low probabilities can always be offset by corresponding increases in the value of outcomes, traditional expected value theory is vulnerable to the charge of fanaticism, "risking arbitrarily great gains at arbitrarily long odds for the sake of enormous potential" (Beckstead and Thomas, 2021). Put differently, it seems to recommend spending all of our efforts on actions that, predictably, won't achieve our ends.Alternative decision theories have significant drawbacks of their own, giving up one plausible axiom or another. The simple alternative is expected value maximization but with very small probabilities rounded down to zero. This gives up the axiom of continuity, which suggests for a relation of propositions A B C, that there exists some probability that would make you indifferent between B and a probabilistic combination of A and C. This violation causes some weird outcomes where, say, believing the chance of something is 1 in 100,000,000,000 can mean an action gets no weight but believing it's 1.0000001 in 100,000,000,000 means that the option dominates your considerations if the expected value upon success is high enough, which is a kind of attenuated fanaticism. There are also other problems like setting the threshold for where you should round down.[2] Alternatively, you could go with a procedure like weighted-linear utility theory (WLU) (Bottomley and Williamson, 2023), but that gives up the principle of homotheticity, which involves indifference to mixing a given set of options with the worst possible outcome. Or you could go with a version of risk-weighted expected utility (REU) (Buchak, 2013) and give up the axiom of betweenness which suggests the order in which you are presented information shouldn't alter your conclusions.[3] It's very unclear to us, for example, that giving up continuity is preferable to giving up homotheticity, and neither REU or WLU really logically eliminate issues w...

According to the Hancock County records, Nucor purchased an approximately 225 acre parcel known as the C.M. Brennemen Farm in April for $4.2 million. That same month, Nucor purchased a parcel of more than 70 acres from Robert and Michelle Chambers, for $2.3 million. The properties are still undergoing environmental analysis, according to Nucor spokeswoman Markee Schlindler. Nucor's planned mill in Mason County is waiting on federal permits from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to begin construction, but preparation of the site continues.  The company said a transloading and processing center in the northern part of the state would create a broader logistics network to better serve its customers in the upper midwest and northeast regions. The school will be a satellite location of Marshall's Bill Noe Flight School on the WLU campus. Once the satellite site opens, an assistant chief will be assigned there after being selected by the Federal Aviation Administration, said Nancy Ritter, director of the Bill Noe Flight School at Marshall University. “That chief will work directly with the West Liberty people to make certain there are enough flight instructors, enough aircraft, and that the progression is moving forward,” she said.   Ritter noted there will be many opportunities for local students and STEM clubs to take advantage of educational offerings at the flight school. “There is a tremendous amount of education that needs to take place to start a program like this, and we want to be a part of that,” she said. It is very clear when speaking to her, both on and off the podcast, that Dr. Omelchenko is passionate about music performance, music education, music scholarship, and supporting the musical community she is a part of. When I have walked by her office and the door is open she is nearly always speaking to a student or faculty member. Directing the same passion and focused attention with which she takes the podium, toward whomever she is speaking. https://www.wlu.ca/academics/faculties/faculty-of-music/faculty-profiles/kira-omelchenko/index.html

But I have a question, during some of the debate about parties a member said something along the lines of “that other useless party none of the above” I’m curious to know why they think that? And how they came to that conclusion? 37 - Deconstruction: The Lindsay Shepherd Affair

In November 2017, Wilfred Laurier University teaching assistant Lindsay Shepherd was called to a disciplinary meeting by two professors (Nathan Rambukkana and Herbert Pimlott) and one administrator (Adria Joel) to discuss her screening of a video clip from TVO's The Agenda with Steve Paikin during a class she was conducting. Shepherd taped the proceedings (http://bit.ly/2mMPvok) and released them, causing a national and international firestorm of outrage over the manner in which she was treated. The video clip featured me discussing the provisions of Canada's compelled speech law, Bill C16, with Professor Nicholas Matte of the Mark S Bonham Centre for Sexual Diversity Studies at the University of Toronto. During the proceedings, Shepherd was accused of breaking the law, both federal (Bill C16) and provincial, violating Wilfred Laurier's standards of conduct, and of being actively transphobic. Rambukkana compared me directly to Hitler (and Milo Yiannopoulos, to be fair), failing to recognize that what I predicted would happen in the aftermath of Bill C16 (see http://bit.ly/2AZqj4B) was exactly what was undertaken by the tripartite disciplinary panel he headed. Twenty of Rambukkana's colleagues signed a letter of support for his actions (http://bit.ly/2DiedjN), despite the almost universal condemnation. In addition, great efforts were made by the neo-Marxist/postmodernist/critical theory ideologues to cast Shepherd as the perpetrator, as noted in Quillette (http://bit.ly/2l3Np0h), and the Wilfred Laurier Faculty Association president wrote this missive (http://bit.ly/2C9Ulm1) decrying "the violent speech and actions that have, unfortunately, become a daily occurrence on our campuses" despite there being no evidence whatsoever for such violence. On December 18, Dr. Deborah MacLatchy, President and Vice-Chancellor of Wilfrid Laurier University, released a statement on the independent fact-finder's report on the Lindsay Shepherd affair, exonerating her completely, stating that the disciplinary meeting should have never occurred and indicating even that the claim of student complaint was essentially fabricated (although Dr. MacLatchy has released a statement of clarification about that: http://bit.ly/2C8xWWp). Dr. David Haskell, Associate Professor, Digital Media and Journalism / Religion and Culture and Dr. William McNally, Associate Professor of Finance at the School of Business and Economics (both of Wilfred Laurier) joined me for this discussion (December 19), where we "deconstructed" Dr. MacLatchy's response. They are not alone at WLU, by the way, in their opposition to the ideological zealotry that has possessed their campus, and most others. Hopefully, in 2018, more professors will come to their senses and join them. Why should you care? Because this is, in truth, the state of the modern university -- and what happens there will happen everywhere five years later.
