Friends, I'm still buzzing from this week's episode of Can't Be Contained! I had the INCREDIBLE honor of sitting down with Neale Donald Walsch, author of "Conversations with God" and someone whose work has deeply impacted my own spiritual journey. This conversation touched my heart in so many ways, and we explored everything from: ➤ How to recognize when God is speaking to us (Neale's perspective on this is fascinating!) ➤ The surprising spiritual potential of AI ➤ Understanding time as an illusion (Mind = BLOWN) ➤ Making JOY our JOB What really moved me was Neale's core message about our lives not being about us, but about everyone whose life we touch. As someone who's spent years working with people through breathwork and personal development, this resonated so deeply with me. And you know we've got a BONUS for you, babes — Neale is offering all of you FREE access to his digital manuscript "The God Solution". This is such a gift, and I know you'll find it as valuable as I have. Find it HERE! Alright lovelies, if you're looking to deepen your spiritual connection, ready to challenge traditional religious perspectives or seeking a more authentic relationship with DIVINE WISDOM — this episode is for you! Do you have a specific end goal for your private practice, but aren't really sure how to get there? This episode is perfect for you!I sat down with Heather Anderson, a speech-language pathologist with a private practice in Monroe, Michigan. Heather started out as a medical SLP, later became a pediatric SLP to start her own private practice, and now sees all ages through her practice, Your Voice Speech Therapy. I helped Heather get started through the Start Your Private Practice Program. As her business took off, she leveled up to the Grow Your Private Practice Program, which has helped her create a thriving practice doing what she loves. In this episode, Heather shares what it was like starting her practice on the side of a full-time job, why she pivoted to pediatric services, and how that flexibility eventually allowed her to get back to her zone of genius and experience huge growth. Heather graduated from The University of Toledo in 2016 with a Master of Arts. Her first exposure to speech pathology was as a junior in high school in 2008. While looking through possible majors at The University of Toledo, the title of speech-language pathology instantly caught her attention. Her mother recommended shadowing a speech-language pathologist at the hospital where she worked, and after taking her advice, decided after just one hour that it was the career for her. After graduation, Heather began working in a transitional care setting (a segway from acute care into a skilled nursing facility). While working in transitional care, she also worked in acute care at Toledo Hospital, where she learned valuable information for evaluating and treating strokes (in the neuro ICU), dysphagia, cognitive disorders, tracheostomies, motor vehicle accidents, and traumatic brain injuries. She also became certified to perform swallow studies (MBSImP certified).Heather then went into an outpatient pediatric setting while conducting swallow studies for acute care patients and outpatients. From there, she worked in skilled nursing settings in which she worked heavily with voicing disorders, dysphagia, dementia care, memory impairments, and more. Heather became a Certified Dementia Practitioner while working in skilled nursing and has expertise working in specialized Alzhiemer's/dementia care facilities. She has since continued working in acute care and skilled nursing settings but has always dreamed of owning a private practice. In Today's Episode, We Discuss:Heather's background and how she got into SLPWhat motivated Heather to start her own practice on the side of her jobWhat helped her take the leap to enter a school contractA look into the networking opportunities that came with pursuing her own practice The reality of pivoting your vision to serve the communityHow the Start and Grow programs helped Heather get back to her zone of geniusThe power of becoming the one that people refer toI hope you find Heather's story inspiring! If you've been thinking about starting a private practice on the side of your job to have the flexibility for your family that Heather strived for, be sure to tune in!If you would like to know more about our Programs and how we help support SLPs and OTs who want our help to start and grow their practices, please visit www.IndependentClinician.com/resourcesWhether you want to start a private practice or grow your existing private practice, I can help you get the freedom, flexibility, fulfillment, and financial abundance that you deserve. When you need a job done, should you figure out how to do it, or find someone else to do it? If you want to make money, it's the latter. In this episode, Justin Ledford explains how to make money through subcontracting. Rather than do something yourself, find the people with the expertise. Connect them with people who need work done.Tune in to the episode to find out how to use subcontractors to create a win-win situation for everyone involved. Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation:Find the best people for the jobWhat “sales” really meansLearn the Triad of LifeYou don't need to buy a company in an industryEpisode Highlights[04:24] Sharing the DreamJustin had a dream of retiring before 40 and living in Costa Rica. He was a sales guy but saw his wife working late at night. Together, they decided to start a company. He invested in mentors to learn the best way to start a roofing company. After that, he began teaching others to do what he was doing.[13:27] Transitioning from Houston to Costa RicaJustin's family lost a lot of money when he was young. He had to grow up quickly. That experience taught him the value of money. He started hustling and saved more money than the adults in his life.[24:39] Getting into an IndustryYou don't have to buy a company in an industry. Justin instead contacts subcontractors and connects them with people who need jobs done. His two moneymakers are insurance companies and the government.[36:36] Two Stories of SuccessRalph, a home builder, contacted Justin through YouTube. He makes six figures per contract through government jobs. Another story is that Justin took a government contract and found the best subcontractors to do the job.Notable quotes from the Episode:[03:09] "It's not necessarily the money that makes me thrive anymore. It's more about the impact and following my passion."[12:40] “I always follow the rule: ‘Always win on the buy.' My second rule is: ‘Always win on the buy.'”[16:31] "I've already geeked out on the industry. I studied how to be a good roofing salesman. I already own the business, so I knew about it. But I didn't master my craft."[33:56] “You've read the book, Who, Not How? We have people who are getting them done. They're making profits, we're making profits, and it's just a match made in heaven.”Resources Mentioned:Resources Mentioned:Connect with Wyatt Graves: LinkedIn | WebsiteThe Mentee Podcast: Website | Apple | SpotifyGoBundance MembershipVIP Private Mastermind EventConnect with Justin Ledford: IG | YouTube |

A primary point of discussion today is how important it is to higher people to help you grow your brand and how to choose the right person to hire. We also discuss if affiliate marketing is a good route to take to grow your business and how to use email marketing and social media to maximize growth and sales. Jordan is an expert at SEO marketing for websites and YouTube and has loads of essential takeaways to provide. In today's episode we specifically discuss:How can social media be used to build brandsHow do you introduce your brand on social mediaHow do you find good people to hire How do I hire the right person for the jobWhat is SEO marketingWhat is SEO is simple termsWhat is email marketing and exampleThese questions are answered by Jordan who has been working with Gary Vee for years and who has built his own social following to well over 1 Million across his platforms. I first 'met' Vivienne a few years ago on Instagram as she shared a love for travel. Since then, I've gotten to know her personally and follow her on her journey. What a GEM!Vivienne Okafor is a creative content director, brand coach, and storyteller with a mission to build people. She focuses on helping you discover the essence of who you are through your gifts, story and purpose, and guides you to package it for who you're called to serve. Vivienne shares her courageous journey from trying to get into medical school to entrepreneurship. This episode is for anyone in transition, charting a different course, or making an unpopular decision. We talk about:What she wanted to be when she was growing upHow we sometimes carry dreams that aren't ours as Immigrants and BIPOCsHow it felt when she realized her childhood dream of going to medical school was not going to happenHow she told her parents that she was not going to medical schoolHow courage comes in the DOING, and not feeling courageous at the time she made the decision to move forward despite the uncertainty aheadHow to know when you're ready for your next move Making the next pivot from health care consulting to creative entrepreneurshipGoing all-in on a decision vs doing a half-ass jobWhat a conversation we had and this is only part 1. This week's guest is Ryan François from real estate development company, Rally Cap Properties. Ryan's journey to real estate is a bit unconventional. He studied civil engineering and architecture at Iowa State University and after graduation, he became a mountain guide and then worked for a tech startup. After recognizing an itch in himself to do something a little bit more entrepreneurial, Ryan started investigating real estate. He started flipping houses in Des Moines with one of his college friends as a side gig in 2014. They quickly realized there was a strong demand and that they could start a viable business. One of their first projects was reposted on the For the Love of Old House's Facebook page and their business blew up with both media attention and inquiries. After appearing on local news channels, they sped up the process of their business organization so that they'd be ready to start fielding requests from potential clients. Since then, Ryan has been renovating homes in the Des Moines area and is eager to continue making a difference in the community.Tune in for topics like:The journey from civil engineering & architecture to real estateRyan's career journey and pivotsHow a side gig of flipping homes turned into a full time jobWhat to do when your post goes viralHow the Covid pandemic has impacted Rally Cap PropertiesWhere to start learning everything you need to know about real estate developmentRyan's future plans for Rally Cap PropertiesLinks from the episode:For the Love of Old Houses Facebook PageRally Cap Properties WebsiteRally Cap Properties InstagramRally Cap Properties FacebookLocal Business School - doors are open, sign up today! So You Wanna Start A... series YouTube ChannelFollow me (Emily Steele) (Love Local) on Instagram for a little business + a little life, and a whole lot of positive energy!

Fancy Scientist: A Material Girl Living in a Sustainable World
You get a degree and then a job, right? That's how it is supposed to work. But in wildlife biology, ecology, and conservation careers, it's not so straightforward. In the wildlife science realm, you need experience, but the crazy thing is, that in our field, a lot of experiences are unpaid. Even though they are full jobs, quite often they don't pay.To be honest, it is extremely hard to get into this field without any volunteering. There are very few programs that will give someone with no experience a paid work opportunity. On top of that, once you graduate, most jobs are temporary, low-paying, and seasonal. Even if you do find a job, you might be trying to piece together these positions, and often across different areas of the country (moving is expensive). Unfortunately, finances are something you need to think about before you enter this career. Therefore, I thought it was a great idea to invite my friend Dr. Emily Roberts of Personal Finance for Ph.D.s for a dual interview for both of our podcasts. Emily's mission is to inspire and empower early-career Ph.D.s to make the most of their money. She engages with graduate students and postdocs through her Personal Finance for PhDs seminars, coaching, and websites. In this episode, we talk about all of the financial realities of going into a career in wildlife science.Specifically we discuss:What are pay-to-play jobs and experiencesWhy you will probably need to volunteer before you get a paying jobWhat should you expect financially in a career in wildlife biologyHow you can better prepare yourself financiallyAlternatives to careers in wildlife biology that can still satisfy your need to help wildlife/conservationand MORE!For full show notes click here.Get a free chapter of my book “Getting a Job in Wildlife Biology: What It's Like and What You Need to Know” to see how I can help you in your career: https://stephanieschuttler.com/getting-a-job-in-wildlife-biology-book/ Want to learn about cool animals, conservation, and get tips about careers in wildlife biology, science, and more? For the last month, since we’ve been feeling the hardships of our government’s response to a pandemic and many are living with fear either for their health or for the future fallout of the measures taken to stem the virus’s tide, I’ve set aside our study of the book of Exodus. In his providence and through the lectionary, the Lord has given us some timely passages of scripture for these days, but as our situation continues, I think it’s better to let God’s word speak to us more systematically through the exposition of a book rather than trying to find ways to apply the lectionary readings. Of course, the book of Job comes immediately to mind. Job knew suffering the likes of which none of us has ever known. And so for the next few months I’d like for us to look at this beautiful, difficult, and humbling book from the Old Testament’s library of wisdom literature. As I said, it’s a difficult book. In the mid-17th Century, Joseph Caryl, a Congregationalist minister in London, preached two-hundred-and-forty-something sermons on the book of Job over a period of twenty-four years. That’s a lot of study in the book of Job. And even he, in his last sermon, apologised to his congregation, saying, “I have not attained so clear an understanding of some passages.” “What am I to do?” I thought. The good news is that the emphasis of my master’s degree was on Old Testament wisdom literature and that I studied under Bruce Waltke, one of the best. The bad news is that I spent most of my time studying Sirach (or you might know it as Ecclesiasticus) in the Apocrypha and that that was twenty-five years ago. I’ve jumped into a crash-course refresher the last couple of weeks and I pray that the Holy Spirit will speak as we dig into this book he’s given us. So Job. Who, what, why, where, when? I think the best place to start is with the first verse: There was a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job, and that man was blameless and upright, one who feared God and turned away from evil. We don’t know exactly where the “land of Uz” was other than that it was somewhere east of the Jordan River—to the east of Israel. It could have been anywhere from Syria, east of the Sea of Galilee in the north, to the Arabian desert in the south. The east was known for its wisdom, which according to the book of Kings, rivalled the wisdom of Solomon. It was from the “east” that the wise men came to worship Jesus. And so it’s appropriate that this wise man named Job comes from the east as well. We should note that he is not an Israelite. The book of Job does not address it’s questions from the standpoint of God’s covenant with Israel. It’s application is wider and more general—and more individually focused. The text says “there was a man”. Was there a real Job? Or is Job a literary construct? Was he a folk hero renowned for his wisdom around which our story was later written? We don’t know. Those words “there was a man” are sometime used in the Bible to introduce parables and other times real history. The book itself, many scholars think, may be one of the oldest in the Bible. The Hebrew in which it is written is unusual and different from the rest of the Old Testament. In fact, it’s different enough that translating the book is difficult and the meaning of roughly three per cent of it is uncertain—although that doesn’t mean we can’t understand the meaning of the book itself. The book has a prose introduction that sets the scene and a prose epilogue that closes out the story, but the heart of the book is forty chapters of some of the most eloquent, sophisticated, and sublime poetry in scripture. The scenes in heaven, given in the first two chapters, would have never been known by any human—let alone Job and his friends—and despite the knowledge and wit of the players, no one would have discoursed the way they do in the grand poetry used in the heart of the book. I’m inclined towards the conclusion that the book of Job is—like a lot of other ancient wisdom literature—fiction. It’s an exploration into the justice and wisdom of the Lord through a hypothetical dialogue between five wise men debating the subject amongst themselves with a prologue which gives, us the readers, the setting needed to understand the story’s big picture. It may be that there was a real Job, known for both his righteousness and for experiencing great suffering, who was put at the centre of this thought experiment. At the end of the day we don’t know. But we don’t need to. All we need to know is that the Spirit has inspired and given us this book to help the Lord’s people in every age find their way through difficult times and to trust in the Lord’s wise governance of the world. The key thing about Job is that he was blameless and upright and he feared God. Now, that doesn’t mean he was perfect. These are words that the book of Proverbs uses to describe men and women who are favoured by God. The sense is that Job was a godly man and that he was characterised by integrity. Not only that, but he’s wise. The heart of biblical wisdom is the fear of the Lord. Now, except in his initial response to tragedy given in the prose prologue, Job as a non-Israelite never names God by his covenant name, but he nevertheless fears the Lord. And he certainly knew God’s blessing. He had seven sons and three daughters, 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels, 500 yoke of oxen, 500 donkeys, and many servants. He was, says verse 3, “the greatest of all the people of the east”. All of these numbers point to idealisations, to perfection. Not only is job a man known for his righteousness and integrity, but he’s also the man who has everything. As is noted later, he’s known in the city gate—he’s got civic status as well. Everyone knows Job, which will make his fall all the more humbling. Now, in verses 4 and 5 we’re told that Job’s sons “each on his day” would hold a feast in his home and that all the siblings would gather. The general consensus seems to be that these were probably birthday parties of some kind. Whatever the case, we’re told that when these …days of the feast had run their course, Job would send and consecrate them, and he would rise early in the morning and offer burnt offerings according to the number of them all. For Job said, “It may be that my children have sinned, and cursed God in their hearts.” Thus Job did continually. We have no sense that Job’s children were hellions running wild or anything like that. There’s no reason to think they were any less pious than Job. What this seems, I think, to be getting at is that for all his wisdom and integrity, Job’s understanding of God may be flawed. The gods of the Ancient Near East were often petty, arbitrary, and easily offended and their worshippers often went out of their way in attempts to appease them lest they fall out of favour. Is that what Job’s doing here? Is he approaching the Lord the way the pagans approached their gods? We see him making sacrifices on behalf of his children in case they’ve done something wrong—making sacrifices on their behalf lest they fall out of God’s favour. Job expresses this fear about God later in his speeches and I think that explains his actions here. And this is the weak spot in Job’s faith, in his piety, in his wisdom. And the Adversary will exploit it. Is Job righteous because he values righteousness, is he serving God because he loves God, or is he—at least some of the time—going through the motions and treating God like a vending machine, being righteous merely to ensure God’s continued blessing. This is the flaw in Job’s righteousness that causes the Adversary to question the Lord’s policies. Now let’s look at that. We’ve met Job and now the narrator of the story shifts scenes to the Lord’s council chamber. In verse 6 we see the Lord holding court and his council members or cabinet ministers—what the text calls the “sons of God”—are summoned. And amongst them is one called the Adversary or the Challenger. In Hebrew it’s the satan. It’s not a proper name. Hebrew doesn’t use the definite article with proper names. It’s a title given to one of these heavenly councillors or ministers. There’s not enough information given here, or for that matter in the Old Testament as whole, to develop a dogmatic explanation of this character. The Hebrew word satan can be both a verb or a noun—referring to some kind of opposition or to a character involved in some kind of adversarial work—but always either at God’s direction or subject to his sovereignty. I’m inclined to see this character’s role as something like that of the opposition in Parliament. They’re there to push back, to challenge, to question, and to act as a check on the government. That’s their job. In fact, how do we refer to them? As “Her Majesty’s Loyal Opposition”. They’re not there to challenge the sovereignty of the Queen, but to help ensure the Queen’s government is on the right track. And that seems to be something of the role of the Adversary or Challenger here in the Lord’s court and it will get at the core theme and purpose of the book. There doesn’t seem to be anything here to indicate this character is diabolical or has evil intentions. To come to that conclusion, we have to import it from outside the text. The Lord calls on the Adversary and asks him, “Where have you been? What have you been up to?” And the Adversary responds, “I’ve been ‘going to and fro on the earth, and…walking up and down on it’” (v. 7). “Ah!” says the Lord, “then you must have run across Job, my most devoted servant!”: “Have you considered my servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, who fears God and turns away from evil?” (Job 1:8) Yes, the Adversary does know about Job. And he knows, that Job is indeed upright and blameless and that he really does fear God. There’s no question about that. But! But what if it’s not what Job does that’s the problem? What if Job’s motivations are wrong. The Adversary responds to the Lord: “Does Job fear God for no reason? Have you not put a hedge around him and his house and all that he has, on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land. But stretch out your hand and touch all that he has, and he will curse you to your face.” (Job 1:9b-11) Here’s what the book of Job is about. Ultimately, it’s not Job who is on trial, but the Lord’s policy, the way he chooses to govern his Creation. You see, the book of Job is aimed at a problem that Israel struggled with. And it’s not just Israel. Each generation of the Lord’s people seems to struggle with this issue in one way or another. It’s something that theologians and biblical scholars call the Retribution Principle. The basic affirmation is that God blesses righteousness and punishes wickedness. Now, the Retribution Principle obviously isn’t wrong. God does bless righteousness and he does punish wickedness. But if we leave it at that, the formula becomes overly simplistic. And in this overly-simplistic form, the Retribution Principle leaeves in question the motives of the people God blesses. As the Adversary asks of Job: What if Job is only being righteous for his own benefit? What if Job is only serving the Lord because the Lord has blessed him? Is Job really devoted to the Lord in his heart, or is he just in it for himself? If he’s in it for the stuff he gets from God, well, isn’t his righteousness actually unrighteousness? And if his righteousness is really unrighteousness, is the Lord just in continuing to bless him?” The Adversary is perfectly aware that the Lord rewards righteousness and punishes wickedness and he challenges that policy. “What if it gives people the wrong motive for serving the Lord?” he asks. And, of course, as we’ll see when Job’s friends arrive and the great dialogue begins, if we know it’s true that God blesses the righteous and punishes the wicked, is it then also true that a blessed person is righteous and a suffering person unrighteous? Think of the disciples in John 9. This is the principle they were working from when they asked Jesus about the man born blind. “Who sinned,” they asked, “this man or his parents.” The assumption was that because the man was blind, someone must have sinned and the blindness was the punishment. And Jesus didn’t answer their question directly, because it wasn’t the right question in the first place. He said to them, “It’s not because he sinned, but that the works of God might be displayed in him.” There’s more to it than a simple formula about righteousness being blessed and wickedness being punished. Yes, as a general principle, God blesses the righteous and punishes the wicked and in a perfect world this might be all we need to understand. But the world isn’t perfect. We’ve broken it. God will set it to rights one day, but in the meantime that means that there are complicating and mitigating factors in God’s governance of his creation as he brings things to that ultimate goal. This is how the dialogue between Job and his friends unfolds. They all assume that the Lord’s actions can be explained with this simplistic model. They all also all begin with the assumption that God is just. And so Job’s three friends argue that if the Retribution Principle explains God’s actions and that if God is truly just, which he must be, then Job’s righteousness is called into question. And so they hector Job: “We know that to all outward appearances, you’re a beacon of righteousness. But, Job, you’ve got to be hiding some secret sin. Confess it, repent of it, and all will be well with you again.” Job, for his part, is just as sure that the Retribution Principle is just. But Job also knows that he is indeed righteous. He has no secret sins to confess. And so the only thing left to him is to question whether God is truly just after all. Elihu, the fourth disputant, arrives in the second half of the book and, in his wisdom, gets a little closer to resolution. He changes the terms of the debate a bit. What if God is afflicting Job not for something he’s done in the past, but for what he’s doing right now. What if this affliction is mean not to punish, but to correct or something like that. It’s not until the four have finished their disputation that the Lord enters in a whirlwind and we find that justice isn’t the aspect of the Lord’s character in question here. They’ve been asking the wrong question all along. The problem is that human beings, with our limited scope, have inadequate knowledge and wisdom to evaluate the justice of the Lord’s actions. To do so is to repeat the sin of Adam and Eve when they tried to take God’s role on themselves. No, the real issue is the wisdom of God, which informs his justice. We can’t hold God to our standard of justice, because our standard of justice is limited and imperfect—we lack his wisdom. Rather, we have to understand that justice flows from God himself according to his perfect and infinite wisdom. And so the book of Job becomes a call to faith in the midst of suffering and tragedy. The book of Job is a call to give up our persistent attempts to take God’s role on ourselves, our persistent attempts to judge him from our limited perspective, and to put our trust in his perfect goodness and wisdom. So Job isn’t the one on trial. The Adversary has called into question the Lord’s policy. That’s what’s on trial. And so the Lord, in verse 12, hands Job over to the Adversary, “All that he has is in your hand. Only against him do not stretch out your hand.” In the verses that follow a string of messengers comes running to Job with news of tragedy. First it’s a hoard of Sabean raiders who have stolen Job’s cattle and killed his servants. Then it’s word that “the fire of God from heaven”—probably a lightning storm—has fallen on the sheep and the servants tending them, killing them all. Third, Chaldeans have raided Job’s camels, stealing them all and killing their keepers. Just like that the incredible wealth of Job is wiped out. And last and worst of all, a messenger brings word that a great wind—perhaps a tornado—hit the house where his seven sons and three daughters were feasting, knocking it flat and killing everyone inside. Everything that Job had, his material wealth and his beloved children, are taken away just like that. He has nothing left. In verse 20 we’re told that: Job arose and tore his robe and shaved his head and fell on the ground and worshiped. Tearing one’s robe was a universal act of anguish and mourning. So was shaving the head in many cultures—although this again tells us that Job is not an Israelite as shaving the head was forbidden to Israelite men. Job is in anguish. The ESV says that he worshipped, but the Hebrew literally says he prostrated himself. If we look at how this word is used this way in the Old Testament, it’s not so much as act of worship as it is an act of acknowledgement and acceptance of what God has done. Job humbles himself before the Lord. And he speaks. Look at verse 21: “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.” Despite what has happened, Job maintains his faith in the justice and goodness of God. It’s interesting and says something of Job’s belief in the sovereignty of God that he doesn’t curse the desert raiders who stole his livestock and killed his servants. He doesn’t curse the king’s men who should have been protecting the borders of the land from lawless men. He doesn’t curse the lightning or the tornado. He acknowledges that God holds all these things in his hands, just as it was the Lord who prospered his business and his family. The Lord gave. The Lord has taken away. Blessed be the name of the Lord. The Lord’s policy is vindicated in this first test. Job has lost the material blessings the Lord had given and still he maintains his righteousness, still he holds onto his faith, still he trusts in the Lord. The narrator closes the chapter with the words: In all this Job did not sin or charge God with wrong. (Job 1:22) The Adversary had challenged the Lord saying that Job would curse him if his blessings were reversed. There’s a clever word play at work in the Hebrew. The Adversary uses the word “bless” either ironically or euphemistically to mean the opposite. And so as Job blessed the Lord, he does exactly what the Adversary said he would do while simultaneously vindicating the Lord’s actions. In the midst of incredible tragedy, Job acknowledges the Lord at work and blesses him. Now, that’s not to say that Job did this easily. It might look that way if this is where the story ended, but there’s more to come. Job knows that it’s a lot harder to bless the Lord when he takes than when he gives. And because Job has affirmed the sovereignty of God, he will find himself wrestling deeply with doubt about the justice and equity of God. Nevertheless, he maintains his integrity and the Lord is—so far—vindicated. Brothers and Sisters, this is the point of the book of Job. The book wrestles with the issue of faith. In the end, the book isn’t really about Job. It’s about the Lord and his just, good, and wise rule. And in that it’s a call to faith. This opening scene is important. These are events Job will never know of, but we’re given this glimpse into the Lord’s council chamber so that we understand: Despite the role of the Adversary, it was the Lord who initiated all this when he brought Job to the Adversary’s attention and it’s the Lord who approved of all that will happen to poor Job. There’s no easy out here. We can’t just blame suffering on some evil power outside of the Lord’s control. To conclude that Job is about a man who suffered because of a bet between God and the devil is to miss the point entirely. The book of Job is a call to think well of the Lord even in the face of tragedy and suffering, not so much because Job’s faith serves as an example to us, but because, as we’ll see, the Lord is wise. Job calls us to look beyond the issue of justice—again, a category we are too limited and finite to judge—and to trust in the wisdom of our good and loving Creator even when that wisdom is beyond our understanding. This was, I am sure, a difficult thing for Job to grasp. It took the Lord coming to him in a whirlwind and revealing his majesty. Brothers and Sisters, it’s still to this day a difficult thing for us to grasp, but we have a great advantage over Job. The Lord came to Job in a whirlwind, declaring his power and might and sovereignty over Creation. But to us he has come in the person of Jesus, his own Son, who has humbled himself and taken on our flesh. He has come to us in Jesus, who knew no sin, yet was humbled again as he died on a cross. Job’s loss points us to Jesus and the cross. Like Mary weeping at the foot of the cross, like the disciples grieving the empty tomb, thinking that Jesus’ body had been stolen. We so often meet suffering with fear and with anger—sometimes even anger at the God whom we know is sovereign in this world. The death of Jesus was, to his friends, a horrible mystery. Why would God allow such a thing? And then came Easter and they met the risen Lord. Jesus walked them through the scriptures, through the promises of God, and suddenly it all made sense. Suddenly the very worst day they had ever known became the greatest day in all of history, the day on which the righteousness of God was not only vindicated, but the righteousness of his people too. New creation had burst forth into the world that day, the source of life and hope for a world set to rights, a world where no one has to ask these questions anymore. Friends, it is no easy thing to trust the Lord—let alone bless him—in the midst of suffering, but the cross reveals his goodness, his wisdom, and his righteousness and so it is to the cross we must turn in the midst of our suffering. It is there we see the faithfulness of God and it is there that we find our faith renewed. Let us pray: Heavenly Father, give us insight as we study the story of Job and teach us, we pray, to trust you in the midst of our suffering. Teach us to focus our eyes on the cross of Jesus that we might see everything—the world, our lives, the events and people that surround us—in light of your goodness, faithfulness, and wisdom revealed in the death and resurrection of Jesus. Amen.

Is it factory authorized, or am I sure I’m going to get my warranty, or how does that work today? The warranty business, like let’s say if you work on a Toyota or Chevrolet or something like that. Marty Denson: 01:55 Right. Actually everything that we do, we give a limited lifetime warranty on our work. We try to keep everything, to use parts and everything that’s not going to affect your normal factory warranty, with whatever vehicle you have. So, as long as you take care of your car, even if you don’t take care of your paint or your vehicle. You know, we can’t cover regular wear and tear, but if it’s anything to do with anything we did, we definitely stand behind it. What Technology Do You Have in the Body Shop? John Haggard: 02:28 Gotcha, Gotcha. And another thing that people ask about today, especially with new vehicles is, “well, what kind of technology do you have in there, in that vehicle”, or if you think about a body shop, a lot of people think, “well there can’t be really anything too high tech in there”. But how is the body shop business, from a technology standpoint, or the equipment that you have in there, how’s that different from a few years ago? Marty Denson: 02:54 It’s quite a bit different. We try to stay up to date with all of our equipment and we have two brand new state of the art downdraft paint booths. We keep all the new modern welding equipment. We have a modern rise frame rack, if we do need any kind of frame repair and we keep all the modern scanners to help. All these new cars have a lot of sensors and codes and stuff on them. So we keep all the modern scanners so that we can keep everything programmed the way it needs to be. Body Shop Experience John Haggard: 03:24 Gotcha. Gotcha. And if you look at all the people who are there at the body shop, I guess the combined number of years of folks who have been in the business, what would that number be about? Marty Denson: 03:34 Yeah, we’ve got, with all the people that we have in the shop, we have over 200 years of experience with my staff. And then in the office we have 45 years of experience in the office. John Haggard: 03:47 Y’all are a bunch of old people. Ha! Marty Denson: 03:49 Yeah, I’ll tell ya, ha! Dealing With Insurance, Estimates, and Tennessee’s Right to Choose John Haggard: 03:49 You’ve been around for awhile. You know, depending upon where somebody may have lived, perhaps another state or maybe here in Tennessee and they just don’t know. Can you take your vehicle to any body shop or repair shop that you want to? Because I’ve heard in some cases, the insurance company will say, “well, if you don’t take that vehicle to one of our vendor approved body shops, then we’re not going to stand behind the warranty. We’re not going to help you if you have any problems”. How does that work here? Marty Denson: 04:22 Yeah. Unfortunately, that’s the kind of scare tactic that the insurance companies use to try to get people to take it to a certain shop that’s giving them discounts and different things like that. But in the state of Tennessee, it’s a right to choose state, so you can choose to take your car to any shop you want to and there’s nothing the insurance company can do about it. And actually, we give the same warranty that a shop that they’re trying to push them off to is giving. So you’re not missing out on any kind of warranty issues there. But you do have the right to choose, you can take your vehicle to any shop you want to. John Haggard: 04:54 All right. And what about the estimates? You know, because at one time, they always told you, “hey, go get three estimates, be sure you’re getting a deal”,and all this and that. How does that work now? Do you need to do that or can you just go to the body shop in back of Miracle Ford and just get one estimate or how does that work? Marty Denson: 05:13 Right. Before, usually when you got in a wreck you always went and got three estimates. You had to run all over town. It took you all day. But nowadays, insurance companies really don’t require that either. They’re going to send somebody out to look at your car and they’re going to do an estimate, or they’ll just have you come by and just maybe get one estimate to give to them. So they sort of know what they’re looking at. That keeps you from having to waste all day and run around different places trying to get estimates. A lot of that has changed. Tips to Preserve Your Vehicle’s Paint Job? John Haggard: 05:40 Gotcha. Gotcha. Now if you were just going to give two or three tips to people on how to preserve the paint job or things to look out for, or how or where you parked so you don’t get dented, or how to avoid potential body damage. Just overall preservation with the idea in mind that I want to have the highest resale value I can when I sell my vehicle. What would you tell them? Marty Denson: 06:04 I’d say, some of the most important things, especially with the paint is keep a good wax job on your car. If you keep it waxed, it keeps the paint in good shape and it won’t fade. Endeavor to keep the inside of your car clean. We see a lot of cars that come through here that it’s unbelievable how dirty they are on the inside. And try to park away from, or not to get underneath of trees where sap or different things can get on your paint. If you just keep it wiped and keep the inside clean, you’ll definitely get a whole lot more for your trade in when you do go to trade. What do You Do Outside Of Work? John Haggard: 06:39 All right, well when you’re not working eight days a week, what do you do for fun Marty? Marty Denson: 06:44 Well, I love to be outside, mainly playing golf. I love to play golf on weekends. Actually. That’s my big stress reliever. John Haggard: 06:50 So you chase that white ball on that green. Marty Denson: 06:52 Oh yeah. John Haggard: 06:53 Are you a champion golfer or what kind of score do you do? Marty Denson: 07:00 I usually stay in the low to mid eighties. But a lot of times I get just as aggravated on the course as I do everywhere else. Ha. John Haggard: 07:08 I understand there’s always, when you’re playing golf, that one out of 10 shot. If you’re a guy like me, “like, man, that felt so good”, and you think… I can do this. And then the next nine are like “I need to get off the green”, right? Marty Denson: 07:20 Oh yeah, exactly. We are reading a plan at the moment and you will find that plan in the notes if you want to follow along too. We're going to discuss different bits as we read along. You can also follow us on Instagram or twitter @AboutThatBible or go to our website everynationnyc.org for all of our podcasts there. But without further ado let's talk about that Bible. My name is Ailsa this is Nathan we're going to talk: Job. Nathan: Alright. Ailsa: I feel like every time we come to talk about a book of the Bible it's always like oh my goodness this is a crazy one, but here we are again Job. Nathan: This one is definitely no exception, it's a beast. Ailsa: Yeah, it's Job. True confession, until very recently, in fact until we did this plan I don't think I'd read the whole of Job. Nathan: Ok. Ailsa: Because it had always been like, Job, this is really depressing and meaty. And I put it off. Nathan: I definitely don't blame you. I think I've only read it in its entirety maybe twice or three times. It's not like the most uplifting thing, is it? Ailsa: No, and that's why we're going to talk about the main point of Job, and it's not a hugely uplifting topic, but here we go. So, I think Job is talking about whether the world works in a just way and whether God is just. Nathan: Yeah! Ailsa: Yeah, let's start by summarizing Job and then we can come back to whether God is just. You know that really small question. Nathan: I mean the simple answer is yes, right? Ailsa: Is it? I think that's what we like to call trite. Nathan: Podcast, done! Ailsa: Trite, simple and trite. Let's try to summarize job first so we know what we're talking about. What is Job? What's going on? Nathan: It's an immense book, it's 40 some odd chapters long if not longer? Ailsa: Yeah. Nathan: And basically we open and God is holding court in heaven. God is surrounded by other spiritual beings. Ailsa: Which you do not get very often in the Bible I should add. Nathan: So yeah, you have this heavenly scene. Ailsa: It's like a God chat, yeah. Nathan: We don't know who's seeing this we don't know who's narrating this but there he is. And out of the midst comes stain and sais... actually, no, God says... How does that start? Ailsa: Well, I think he's like, "oh Job". Nathan: God's just bragging on Job. Ailsa: I think so and then satan's like, he's only good because he wants things from you. Nathan: In any case, either God or satan raises the subject matter of Job and satan’s like, exactly, he's only serving you because you're so good to him God. Ailsa: Yeah, and then we move on to, well, then satan's how about I prove to you that I'm right, God's like how about I prove to you that I'm right and then God's like ok you can go test Job basically. Nathan: Yeah. Ailsa: Then Job has like a terrible time. Nathan: His life goes totally sideways. Ailsa: Terrible. Nathan: Up until that point he'd been a very righteous person. He'd served God, he'd made sacrifices on behalf of his children in case they'd got up to a little mischief while they'd been partying. And I love likes how teenagers, you know, in ancient Hebrew culture. Ailsa: They were also being teenagers. Nathan: Yeah, they're basically the same. And so Job's praying for them, he's praying for his wife, he's working hard, he's living for God the best he can and then everything starts collapsing around him. Literally, I think a house falls on his children, his animals die. Ailsa: Lots of people come and like take away all his different kinds of animals. I think there are different people that come and it's irrelevant but I think it's kinda funny, it's not funny obviously, but I think you know what I mean. Nathan: There are all sorts of calamities and disasters and only one person survives and it's just the messenger and he comes and says, "Job, awful news, everybody died. All your sheep have died, all your camels have died." Messinger after messenger. Ailsa: Yeah, and then his friends pop up. Nathan: He's got three friends. Ailsa: Three friends, they pop up. They're like so good at the beginning, they're like hey we're just going to sit with you because you're like suffering and terrible things. Nathan: They just sit in silence don't they? Ailsa: I'm like, I'm going to write that down, that's good. And then they start, then it starts being this back and forth. RIght so one friend will talk for a bit and then Job will answer. Next friend, Job answers and it's like that for a lot of chapters. Nathan: I think there are three cycles of that. Yes and then a fourth friend turns up out of nowhere. Elihu, something like that. Ailsa: He pops up. Nathan: And he's young and he brash and he gets the job done and he disagrees with Job and he disagrees with Job and he disagrees with the friends, but he honors God. He lifts God up. He has a very high view of God. And what's tempting while we're reading Job and what's hard is that each person is bringing their perspective. Each person is true, but it's not kinda not universally true. Like his friends are saying, well you must have done something wrong and as you're reading it you're like yeah Job has certainly done something wrong. Ailsa: I always think that. Nathan: Yeah, there's no the way that you're perfect. Ailsa: He's a human. Right? Nathan: Yeah. And then Job's like I've done nothing wrong and then Elihu comes and it's just like who do you trust? Who do you believe through the whole thing? Ailsa: Yeah, I'm not sure. Nathan: And you don't really have any clarity through most of the book. Ailsa: No. Nathan: Until, finally, in some of the last chapters, God turns up. Ailsa: Yep. Nathan: And boy does he ever turn up. He comes in in a whirlwind. And basically tells Job, stand up, dress like a man. Ailsa: Dress like a man? Nathan: I think he says that, like, dress yourself like a man. Ailsa: I don't know what that means. Nathan: I don't know. Ailsa: At that point, put a dress on, Right? Nathan: Probably, oh yeah. Moving on. And God just lets him have it, He's like, you're not god, I am, and where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth, where were you when I made it snow. When I made it rain? Have you seen the heavenly storehouses, you know, filled with snow? Have you seen these mountain tops? Have you seen the depths of the ocean? Were you there in deep dark space when I did this and that? And Job is just dumbfounded, there's nothing that he can say. He's done. Ailsa: He's done, God has the last word, and then he basically gives him double back at the end. Nathan: Yep. Ailsa: Which is another hard bit. Nathan: Only after rebuking his friends. He's like you guys, you treated Job wrong, The three friends, Elihu never gets another mention as far as I can remember. Ailsa: I don't think so. Nathan: And then Job, you need to pray for your friends. Ailsa: Yeah. Nathan: So that they can be restored as well. Ailsa: So, Thinking about those friends, because most of Job is about the friends, what do they tell us about whether God is just or whether we're seeing an unjust God? Nathan: His friends have a very simplistic view of the world. Ailsa: Yeah. Nathan: It's very black and white. Either God is good, and therefore God rewards good people or because you're doing so poorly in life, surely you've done something wrong. God's just you're doing bad so you must be the bad guy. It's a very black and white world view. And I think that like, if we ever say, you know, as I did at the start of this video, Yeah, God's just, I've got all the answers. Ailsa: Yeah, you're just being like them. Nathan: No, I want to clarify that, God is just, right? Like I thorough, thorough believe that. But when I say that I have all the answers I've got the worldview that's going to solve everything, pull everything together, what it does is it basically turns you into a judgemental person. Ailsa: Yeah. Nathan: And that's what happens to his friends. Is that they become very judgemental. They start making up stuff, surely you've tortured widows, or you've robbed widows. Surely you've done this, surely you've, you know, not fed the people that are in need that come to you. Surely you've turned them away empty handed. Or something like that. They just make up these horrible accusations. Ailsa: Well, they start trying to work out what Job's been doing wrong. To make sense. Which we still do, right? We still, like to think oh this is happening to someone they are suffering in this way, we like to think we're more sophisticated than this. But we like, we like victim blame. Nathan: Oh yeah. Ailsa: They are like classic victim blamers. Nathan: That's exactly what is happening here. Ailsa: The thing I find interesting though is that they, so at the end, and you did mention this, God is like so ticked off at them. And they've actually stood up, they have like, They have stood up and said God is just, Job you must be wrong. Which, you know we're saying that's not very nice, that's judgemental. But like, they seem like they're on the side of God. But then like, he's really ticked off at them. Like Job basically has to save them. Nathan: That's a great point. Ailsa: What are we supposed to do with that? Like they seem pro-God. Nathan: Well, don't be a judgemental, religious. Oh.. Yeah? Like, oh I've got access to God, therefore, you're doing bad, you must be doing wrong. God is more ticked off and that's like a theme in the bible, Jesus to the Pharisees, Paul to the Galatians. Ailsa: Oh that’s true. It's not like an original to Job moment. Nathan: I mean, yeah it's early in, well, I don't know, we can talk about history about when it was written but yeah, it's a theme through all of the bible isn't it? Ailsa: Yeah. Nathan: God does not like religious bigotry. Ailsa: Yeah. Man, they just think they're doing the right thing though. The fourth friend, He also thinks God is just though. But it is different? Nathan: I don't think he pins it on, he doesn't' pin it on Job. Ailsa: No, I think he's a bit annoyed at Job. I think maybe he's annoyed at Job for how he, how he blames God at one point, I think. Nathan: Well, that's fair enough, God doesn't get mad at Elihu, the fourth friend. Ailsa: No, I don't think so. That's the other thing, like, we see with Job, we see someone who does get annoyed at God. Like God is not annoyed at Job at the end. That's actually interesting. He's annoyed at those friends, he's not annoyed at Job. Job has accused God of possibly being unjust. Nathan: Wow, yeah. So Job has just brought his emotions to God. Ailsa: Yeah. Nathan: After going back and forth with his friends he's like that's it I want to talk to God I want him to prove himself to me. And I think that's something that like King David does. He brings all of his emotions to God. It's similar to what Job does. And I think that God understands like this world is tough and we want to see where he is and what he's doing. But on the other hand, he's also a lot, a lot bigger than we can understand and fathom so we don't always get the answers that we're looking for. Ailsa: No I don't think that you get any of the answers. So like you're left, you read Job and you think, ok so why is this dude suffering? And actually, you're kind of given the answer at the beginning, right? You've got like God and satan having a chat and you know the reason that job is suffering in this instance is because satan sort of thought that he should have a go at him. And God was like, OK. So you see that, but there's no real reason outside of that. And Job never knows. Like he never gets the answer right? Nathan: No. He doesn't. and he doesn't get an explanation for why he gets everything back. And there's never even an attempt at a reason. Ailsa: No, it's like it's not even bothering to answer that. Nathan: No. Ailsa: And the God and satan bit is very unsatisfactory. Nathan: Oh yeah. And I think that's the point. It's supposed to be unsatisfactory. Ailsa: That's terrible, we hate that. Nathan: Well like, yeah, but like, bad stuff happens and we never get the answer in life. and so that's basically what Job is opening up. The world is not black and white. Good stuff happens to bad people. Bad stuff happens to good people. But that does not make God unjust. Ailsa: Oh man. Nathan: Alright, so we are right now reading through the Bible chronologically. And so it appears kind of halfway kind of after Genesis 11 you go to Job. What we've seen is that there's this satan character, running around, you know, as a snake. Ailsa: That's true. Nathan: And then in Genesis 3, God limits his authority in some way. Like, he says, cursed are you. You're going to be on your belly, eat the dust of the earth. That God in some way limits satan’s authority. And satan doesn't like this. And so in Job what I see is satan saying, Yeah of course people still like you God, you've taken away what I'm allowed to do with them. And it's like if you've ever been using an umbrella on a rainy day, and you're like, has the rain stopped? How bad is it out there? You pull it back. What hits Job is like a welter, a torrential downpour of rain. Like, yeah, satan is still at large, he's still a bad guy, but God got him on lockdown. So he's still able to go around and do his accusing thing and his lying thing but he's not going to just drop a house on your kids. Ailsa: Ok, that makes sense so you've got like, you've got like the limiting of satan in that first bit of Genesis and then you see how that actually plays out on Job. Nathan: So that's the way I see it as we read it chronologically that's what I see happening. Ailsa: Rather than, rather than it being like, God is punishing Job. Nathan: Yes. Ailsa: He just takes his thing away. Nathan: His grace. So like grace is something that we don't deserve. We never earn or deserve God's grace and so God is constantly I believe extending grace to every being on earth, making our lives better than what we deserve all the time. And here in Job we see a sneak peek at what it could be like if God did not limit the evil powers of this world. Ailsa: Yeah. Nathan: So that's what I see when I read it chronologically. Ailsa: Yeah, and where does it normally, what do we learn about the book from where it normally sits in our Bible? Nathan: Normally, it sits with the wisdom literature. And you get Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Job. And I love the work that the Bible Project did on this explaining the evolution of wisdom literature, they build one on top of the other. So, Proverbs has this very simplistic kind of black and white view of the world. If you do good, good stuff is going to happen to you. If you do bad, if you sleep in, and you don't work then you're going to be poor. And that's mostly true. But there's always the exception. And then Ecclesiastics comes along and says the wicked prosper. What's the point of life? And it kinda tears up the groundwork of Proverbs. And then Job comes along and says, yeah that's all true, but you know what? God's still just. He sits on his throne. His wisdom is way beyond our wisdom and we've got to trust him whether we like it or not. And that's like really really hard. Ailsa: Yeah. Nathan: I think the authors knew that from the very start. And that's why Job struggles with it, that's why his tree black and white friends struggle with it. Elihu never even really gets his head around it. Ailsa: Yeah. Nathan: It's really tough. Ailsa: At least we see represented people struggling with it though. Nathan: Yeah, yeah. Ailsa: It's like, it's ok to like really struggle with it. Nathan: The nature of sin; and I'm thinking Adam and Eve fell and what they did was they said, we're not going to trust you as God, we're going to take our trust from you and pull it inward. All of a sudden, the universal center of right and wrong is going to rest here [in me]. And so when bad things happen to me I'm going to say this is wrong. And God's saying no, the worlds quite messed up now and so to accomplish ultimate good you're going to think that it's wrong. Your little world is going to experience something that does not feel good for you in the moment. Ailsa: That is super hard. Nathan: And so God is asking for us to expand our world and allow our world to be bigger than us in our suffering. Ailsa: Ooo, it's like such a hard one to read. This is why people are like, oh Job. Nathan: Yeah, so Job is super uplifting. But I believe it is because bad stuff is happening. But what Job is saying is that there is reason, there is a point. That God is still in control. And that Romans chapter 8, we bandied about quite a lot, or it can be bandied about, and I don't want to just use it tritely, but I believe it points in, it funnels in to Job here. "All things work together for good for those who love God and are called according to his purposes." God is working stuff for good. Ailsa: But on a much bigger scale than we can comprehend basically. Nathan: Yes it does not mean that at the end of your life you know, on your deathbed, God is going to turn up and be like, well here's why your cat died when you were three, Your granny died when you were seven, you know, your father left you when you were twelve. He's not going to do that. Sometimes we get glimpses of that in the world and most of the time... No, I believe that when you walk with God you do get the narrative kinda unfolding. Ailsa: Do you mean like you do understand more of why things happen sometimes? Nathan: Yes, but you do gotta hold on for a long time. Ailsa: Yeah, and it's not also like, 'like for like'. Like you, you don't get to see like oh, you sin - this happens. Or you're like good - this happens. Like it's more complicated. Nathan: Your cat dies at three so you can go into veterinary school and solve cat AIDS. Ailsa: Or not even that. Like the, if you're a good person, then you get good blessing. Or, you know, you follow God and then you get a good thing. Like what Satan accuses Job at the beginning of only doing it for what he can get out of God. Nathan: Yeah, so we've got to follow God because he's God? Ailsa: Yeah. It kinda seems like that because that's kinda what it says on the end. God's like I am God and bigger than your, any of your stuff. Nathan: Yeah. Ailsa: Yeah. Nathan: He deserves it, he's God and we're not. Even though our heart cries out, "yes I am yes I am." Ailsa: Yeah, I know. We're like but surely I understand and Job's like, you don't understand. Nathan: I've got enough wisdom! Ailsa: And that's Job. Yeah, we get to see a man wrestling with just not understanding. Nathan: Yes. Ailsa: Yeah. And he gets all this stuff back at the end. But it's not because he was good. Right? I think God makes that clear, it's just grace on the end. Nathan: It's just grace. There's all sorts of little droplets of grace all the way through. All the way through Job. Job keeps referencing and alluding to these incredible Christological foreshadowing pieces. Ailsa: What do you mean by 'Christological foreshadowing pieces' because that's a whole bunch of turms. Nathan: So Job keeps using these phrases that the only answer to these phrases is Jesus. The only way that this is ever going to be solved is Jesus. So at one point he's like, 'I wish that I had an advocate who could place his hand on God and place his hand on me.' I'm like, well who's going to touch heaven and earth at the same time? Ailsa: Jesus. Nathan: Jesus. Another point he says, "For I know my Redeemer lives and shall stand upon the earth." Who's this redeemer, who's going to stand on the earth? Jesus. Right? Ailsa: Yeah. Nathan: And then ultimately the way that Job suffers, everything around him dies, he has basically died. LIke to everything, to the world, to his wife, to his kids, to everything around him is dead. And then God says, 'this is the guy who is going to restore these self-righteous friends back to God.' And even Job himself is a little bit like a Christ figure. Ailsa: Yeah, because he keeps being, standing in the gap for these people. Nathan: He stands in the gap for his friends, that's right. Oh gosh, yeah, for his kids at first. Ailsa: Yeah, for his kids on the front end and then for his friends on the back end, right? Oh, it's all about Jesus. Nathan: It is all about Jesus. Or you can read it. Ailsa: All about Jesus. Nathan: I think Jesus read it all about Jesus. Ailsa: Probably, probably. Still, but, I think we're still left, I think it's all about Jesus, but I think we're still left with it's ok to be grappling with this stuff. Nathan: Yeah, it's a lifelong struggle, it really is. And for somebody who is struggling it's just, you kinda have to hold on, just keep going, trusting that God is good, trusting that your Redeemer lives, has stood upon the earth. That God is crushing suffering. And will one day fully and finally make it right. Ailsa: Yeah and on that note, Job. Nathan: Yeah, Job it's a struggle. Ailsa: It's a struggle. Nathan: The struggle is real. Ailsa: It's an important one though because the struggle is real in real life. Job, I don't want to say done because that's not Job done. Done. Nathan: Job, the conversation is opened. Ailsa: Yeah. Nathan: We're finished opening the conversation. Yeah that's a good way of putting it. SHOW TRANSCRIPT: Ailsa: Welcome to About That Bible with Every Nation NYC, we are here to help you get more out of that Bible. We are reading a plan at the moment and you will find that plan in the notes if you want to follow along too. We're going to discuss different bits as we read along. Ailsa: Yeah, let's start by summarizing Job and then we can come back to the weather God is just. Ailsa: And Job we're finished opening your conversation, and done. Nathan: Moving on. Ailsa: That was About That Bible with Every Nation NYC. Takeaways Successful Customers Trumps Revenue: The goal of sales should not be revenue at all costs. It’s our job to find people we can make successful through the value prop we’re pitching. Rather than focusing solely on the signed contract and commission check, make sure the customers you close are going to find value in what they bought 90 days later. Buyers Don’t Have to Talk to Salespeople: 20 to 30 years ago, every buyer had to talk to a salesperson. Today, buyers can watch demos, compare and research alternative products, and even get ballpark pricing online, all before reaching out to talk to a salesperson. In the shifting world of buyer empowerment, you have to provide value in each interaction with a prospective customer. Live Your Buyer’s Job: What does your prospect’s daily job look like? What’s their role in their company? What are their goals? How do they quantify it? What happens if they don’t achieve it? It’s not enough to just ask those questions. When looking at things through their lens, you can really dig into what they’re thinking before they even look to buy. We would like your feedback on today's podcast by answering this quick two-minute survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/MS2T6P6. Thank you so much for your support. My guest today is a gentleman who knows more about fraud than just about anyone else in the accounting and finance profession: Gary Zeune, CPA, Managing Director of The Pros & The Cons. The Pros & The Cons is the only speaker bureau in the country specializing in white-collar criminals. His 40 plus ex-con speakers tell the stories of how and why they embezzled, took kickbacks, and cooked the books to the tune of up to $2.7 billion. His speakers include Mark Morse, a former CFO at ZZZZ Best; Paul Allen, an ex-bank CEO; and Dunlap Cannon, the largest real estate closing attorney in Memphis. But regardless of what kind of entity they worked at, regardless of the dollar amount, there are several really common elements between everyone who commits fraud – the biggest one being that they don't think they're going to get caught. To put it simply, ego gets in the way. So, why would someone be so stupid to think they aren't going to get caught? Well, consider this: have you ever broken the speed limit while driving? Everybody, including me and Gary, have done. It's illegal, so why do we do it? We do it because we think we're going to get away with it – just the same as somebody cheating on their expense report or cooking the books at the bank for $2.7 billion. People say, "Well, I'd never let that happen to me." Well, when you get in your car and you go on the freeway, most of us start going the speed limit. Then, you go two miles over. Then, you're three miles over. Then, five. After you're driving for an hour, you might be going 10, 15 miles over the speed limit. What happens is when your brain is bombarded by constant stimuli, the same stimuli, your brain becomes desensitized. That's why frauds always start little and get bigger, and bigger, and bigger. Most people think that there is a bright line on ethical behavior, but that's not the way it works. Ethics is not absolute. Ethics is situational. So you might think going just five or 10 miles over the speed limit isn’t so bad, but would you break the law by driving 30 or 40 miles over the speed limit? Most of us the answer is no, most of the time, but what about when you have a medical emergency and you're taking your child to the hospital? Your child's health and well-being is more important than you staying five miles over the speed limit, so you change your behavior and break the law even more because there's something more important to you in this situation than the speed limit. So, if you don't do something about fraud, it’s just going to grow – which also means you need to know how fraud works so that you can identify it. You may get an expense report for $1000, including a $12 fake cab. If you don't bust someone over it, assuming you catch it, and then make the punishment worse than the crime, they're going to do it again. “And it will get bigger, and bigger, and bigger. That's where it always starts.” Gary shares a number of great fraud stories in the episode, and you can learn even more by reading some of the following articles he wrote or contributed to: Scott London, Ex-Auditor From Insider-Trading Scheme, Is Out of Prison, Has a Job What do Fraud, Ethics and Strategy have in common? Episode 35 - The first episode in a series of 3 where I share with you my trusted system for managing my activities. In this episode we work out how to define what's important to you, so you can make the rest of the system work really well. This is an interactive episode - you will need some paper, and a pen if you want to work this out for yourself. Some of the USEFUL stuff in there is: Time Management doesn't work - you can't manage time! Why we can only ever do one thing Stop trying to manage the time, and start managing what you pay attention to You don't need to feel anxious any more about what you haven't done You can apply this to work, home, family or life in general No apps in these episodes (almost) Steve in the Field makes a brief appearance - and of course a poor choice! Why you need a filter to decide on what's important to YOU The four levels which will help you decide importance: Level 1 - What's the point or purpose Level 2 - What are the different areas Level 3 - What is the stuff - the detail Level 4 - What should I do right now Whatever you're reviewing, start at Level 1) The point or purpose Job - What is the point or purpose of your job? Why does that role exist? Some answers could be: To grow a business, to make people's lives better, to pay the bills! Vocation - What is the point or purpose of the vocation? Where is the value of that vocation to society? Some answers could be: To make society better, to remove suffering, to help disadvantaged people Parent - What is the point or purpose of being a parent? How would you define aims which might be bigger than you? Some answers could be: To prepare children to be great adults, to help children learn to make a contribution, to ensure children feel loved and secure NOW COME UP WITH 2/3 'PURPOSES' THAT APPLY TO YOU! Then it's time to look at Level 2) What are the different areas? Job - What are the broad areas you focus on in your job? Some answers could be: Marketing, Sales, Developing People, Recruitment, Customer Engagement, Networking Home Maintenance - What are the areas you look after or need to plan for? Some answers could be: Gardening, Decorating, Housework, Plumbing NOW COME UP WITH 10-20 'AREAS' THAT YOU FOCUS ON OR WORK IN APPLICABLE TO WHAT YOU'RE REVIEWING Now it's time to look at Level 3) The detail, the stuff, all the tasks you get involved in Job - What are all of the tasks and activities you work on, everything you can do with your hands, arms, legs, brain, mouth - physical things you can do Some answers could be: Meetings, presentations, complaints, producing reports, appraisals, interviews, phone calls, writing reports, raising invoices, creative activities Parent - what is the stuff that fills your day? Some answers could be: School runs, parent/school meetings, making lunch, homework, bedtime stories, dealing with accidents, cleaning. NOW COME UP WITH THE ENTIRE LIST OF ACTIVITIES AND TASKS YOU GET INVOLVED IN. THERE'S LIKELY TO BE LOADS SO TAKE SOME TIME OVER THIS. RE-VISIT THE LIST A FEW TIMES. THERE'LL BE STUFF YOU HAVE FORGOTTEN! Lisa and Steve had a bit of a chat at this point to see how she got on NOW! Put your Level 3 list (Activities) to one side, you'll need it for next week Grab your list for Level 1 - think really carefully are you happy about your 2/3 things you've got for Level 1 ? Grab your list for Level 2 - the areas of focus. Look at them, consider them against level 1 purpose, ask yourself this question - which ones are most likely to positively support Level 1 stuff? What are 3-6 areas of focus which more than any others support Level 1 ? Put a star by the side of the 3-6 areas of focus you’ve chosen Then rewrite each one an ACTION starting with a verb like 'grow, build, sell, develop, gain,
Takeaways Successful Customers Trumps Revenue: The goal of sales should not be revenue at all costs. Scripture/keywords: Daniel 9:2-11, Galatians 4, Hebrews 13, Job What is the purpose of prayer? Prayer does not change God's mind -- it changes us! Some of God's promises only come alive when you pray them. Bill Johnson shares the book of Daniel to encourage us to get in the trenches of intercession and contend in prayer and fasting. Praying today is training for ruling and reigning with Him!
I've waxed lyrical on my love and history with hip hop a couple of times recently, so there's no need to go through it all again.Andy Hepburn, known as Astronautalis, has been one of my favourite rappers since I heard him on the P.O.S. album ‘Never Better'. His style, delivery and the literary intelligence of his lyrics appeals to the writer in me in ways that a lot of rappers really can't match.Upon landing this interview I did a whole bunch of research and found out that he's related to the 4th Earl of Bothwell, James Hepburn, Better known as Mary, Queen of Scots' third husband. I won't bore you with the details of the history and why that's so interesting to me (it's covered in the podcast) but suffice to say, the Scottish history geek in me was happy to have a chat about all of that with Andy. He's probably one of the coolest, most laid back people I've spoken to so far and this chat is one of the easiest I can remember. Honestly, if you don't love him already I guarantee that you will after this episode.Highlights include:Being in a Yahoo Newsgroup about James HepburnGetting teary eyed about ScotlandSome history about Mary, Queen of Scots, James Bothwell and the oldest house in GlasgowWhy he started to look into his heritageMaking the conscious choice to write lyrics based on historical fictionComing from a line of storytellers and seeing himself as an oral storytellerIt was kind of like making a reading listIt was rappers who were storytellers that drew him towards hip hop – Lord Finesse, Big L, Slick Rick and Ghostface and underground New York hip hopBattling is not art, it's sport. It's not about creativity; it's about making fun of someone. It's also about being precise at a thing and really good at a thing. It's a weapon. But Andy was going to theatre school – battling and studying performance weren't gelling for himIt took a while to let the art knowledge and theatre training to bleed into his musicTheatre informs his performance – he is playing an elevated version of himselfSeeing the live show and the album as two different things – shows should be parties, albums are made to be absorbedBoth punk and hip hop have a need to throw a party, even if the music isn't about the partyYet there's also an angry energy which drives the musicMoving to Minneapolis because of the hip hop sceneBeing a rapper for 20 yearsThe way he's incorporated many different literary techniques into his lyricsHow Shakespeare opened his eyes to the sheer complexity of writingAnd the way Shakespeare essentially gave him a new appreciation for artBecoming a better songwriter as time goes on and taking the influence of pop rap to make things more elegantThe lyrics and the music need to combine together to do the jobWhat the vibe of the new album is aboutUsing different vocal styles and developing a new language for each albumMaking music more simple than ever beforeAnd being very proud of his new albumI'm continually blown away by the generosity of the people I've interviewed – they really don't have to give any time at all to some idiot with a microphone but I'm so glad that they do. Andy was an excellent guest and given his storytelling background, you can quite clearly see the raconteur at work in this interview.I hope you enjoy it. It's one of my favourites.Featured MusicIntro: Voodoo Puppets – Electric Chair Blues (used under CC licence, you can check it out here).Astronautalis - The Wondersmith and his SonsAstronautalis - Sike!I make no claim to the copyright of any of the music in this episode.LinksGo follow Astronautalis on Twitter and like him on facebook.
