Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia.   Today is Thursday, May 22, 2025  Mason County is already seeing an uptick in business with the construction of Nucor Steel…plan a getaway to scenic Mercer County with help from the CVB's new visitor guide…and plans are underway for a campground expansion at Summersville Lake State Park…on today's daily304. #1 – From GAZETTE-MAIL – Construction at Nucor Steel has been good for a convenience store near the southern end of the mill site, and a new store at the northern end expects to have the same results.  Elise Crank, manager of Jerry's Run Food Mart, says construction workers at Nucor keep the store busy. The market's deli section also offers prepared meals ready to be consumed on site or for takeout. A mile or so up the road, Williams Apple Grove Market recently held a soft launch. The store plans to sell hot food, cold food and cold sandwiches and will offer breakfast on weekends.  Mason County Commissioner Rick Handley said he expects other businesses to locate in the Apple Grove area once the mill goes into operation.  Read more: https://www.wvgazettemail.com/business/small-businesses-in-apple-grove-mason-county-thrive-as-nucor-steel-mill-goes-up/article_3dc0d0bd-ea40-408f-a1a6-4b4d999f5e81.html   #2 – From WVVA-TV – The Mercer County Convention and Visitors Bureau has released this year's edition of the county's visitor guide. The visitors guide is titled “Uniquely Appalachian,” and features a cover photo of Brush Creek Falls. The guide highlights destinations travelers can visit while in Mercer County, tips for exploring the Hatfield-McCoy Trails, and information on the art community, restaurants, lodging, and local events. The guide is free and available at the Visit Mercer County offices in Princeton and Bluefield. It is also in the process of being distributed to all welcome centers in West Virginia. Gov. Patrick Morrisey announced the latest expansion of Summersville Lake State Park, and designated the newest Mountaineer Mile trail, during an event earlier this month. The park will offer luxury, full hook-up RV campsites, as well as primitive campsites throughout its three campgrounds. The 177-acre property on the northern shore of the state's largest lake was formally designated as the state's 36th state park in 2023, making it the first new addition to the West Virginia state park system in more than three decades. He first debunks pro-tariff articles as paid propaganda from agenda-driven think tanks, likening media to a “sewer.” Second, he cites Vizion's trade data showing a widening U.S. trade deficit, a 20% drop in container imports, and slumps in agriculture and auto sectors (e.g., Ford's $2.5 billion tariff hit), with companies like Mattel and Nucor facing exemptions or losses. Third, Markowski warns of a treasury market “flash crash” (10-year yields from 3.9% to 4.56%) post-Liberation Day, risking global financial collapse if U.S. debt credibility falters. He urges fiscal discipline, criticizing a $5 trillion debt ceiling hike, and fears Trump's tariff and tax cut push could break the world economy. www.watchdogonwallstreet.com

Drawing parallels from history, Hamel illustrates how groundbreaking management innovations in companies like Whole Foods, WL Gore, and Nucor have driven exceptional performance. He emphasizes the importance of creating human-centric workplaces that inspire and motivate employees, advocating for a shift away from bureaucratic, control-driven models towards environments rooted in purpose, community, and mutual respect.

Gov. Jim Justice and the state's Economic Development Authority agreed to invest $75 million in taxpayer funds to attract an $800 million expansion from Nucor.  That $800 million will be invested along state Route 2 in Mason County and at Nucor's docks in Wheeling. Justice says the new investment will produce 100 additional jobs. Nucor already has 300 employees working in Mason County, and that doesn't count all of the construction workers building the steel mill. The company says the Apple Grove facility will begin operations in mid- to late 2026. Read more: https://www.wsaz.com/2024/12/19/wva-announces-800m-nucor-expansion/   #2 – From WOWK-TV – Governor Jim Justice and First Lady Cathy Justice welcomed their 45th and final therapy dog to a school late last month, marking the bittersweet end of a beloved West Virginia program. Bear, a 10-month-old golden retriever, is Huntington East Middle School's new therapy dog, making him the final therapy dog of the Friends with Paws program. Cathy Justice began the program as a way of raising student morale, boosting attendance and raising test scores. She said the program took inspiration from a pair of Cabell County elementary schools four years ago. Haven, a labradoodle, shares time at Spring Hill and Salt Rock Elementary schools.  “We wanted a dog in the schools because we thought you want your schools to be like family. What makes a home a family? A dog,” Salt Rock Elementary Principal Becky Ferguson said.  Read more: https://www.wowktv.com/news/west-virginia/friends-with-paws-program-ends-after-delivering-45-therapy-dogs-to-schools-across-west-virginia/   #3 – From WVDNR – Some of the most popular game fish in West Virginia like swimming in waters with ample woody cover from downed trees and other vegetation. And when fish are happy anglers are happy. That's why the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources is always looking for creative ways to improve fish habitat and the angling experience. One method is taking discarded live Christmas trees and using them to improve habitat at popular fishing locations, such as Beech Fork and East Lynn lakes. The trees are anchored so that they sink to the bottom and stand upright. By doing it this way, the trees stay in place and create ample cover. This gives small, young fish an opportunity to grow, which increases the overall fish population. The trees also provide ambush spots for larger fish and serve as attractors experienced anglers can use to their advantage. This holiday season, the DNR is accepting your discarded Christmas trees at the following locations: Ices Ferry in Morgantown --  through January 10 Claudia Workman Wildlife Education Center at the Forks of Coal State Natural Area -- through January 6 (This location will have signs directing people to the tree donation pile.) Only whole, real trees will be accepted. All lights and decorations must be removed prior to donation. “Our job is to recycle so that we can recover all of that scrap and goods that you and I are recycling in our garbage bins every week or recycling as we get new cars. And our job is to recover that because we make steel in a very clean and efficient process through what's called an electric arc furnace. So, we take all of that scrap, we melt it down, and we make new steel. It does not degrade. It has a continuous reusable life.…Depending on the different products of steel, that actually determines the recycled content that goes into them for the finishes and the quality of the steel that's needed.”  Tabitha Stine on Electric Ladies Podcast The UN Environmental Programme stated last year that, “The buildings and construction sector is by far largest emitter of greenhouse gases, accounting for a staggering 37% of global emissions. The production and use of materials such as cement, steel, and aluminum have a significant carbon footprint.” So, how do we reduce the severe impact of those building materials? Listen to Tabitha Stine, General Manager of Energy Solutions and Services at Nucor Corporation, “North America's largest steel manufacturer and recycler,” according to its website.  She'll explain how recycled steel is made and more in this fascinating conversation with Electric Ladies host Joan Michelson. They also share insightful career advice. You'll hear about: How recycled steel is made and where the steel comes from that is recycled. How structurally sound recycled steel is and how it's tested to make sure and meet building codes. Which industries use recycled steel, why, and how the demand and supply line up.   How the steel industry is adapting to ensure automobiles and buildings are resilient to the ravages of climate change, including innovations in the works. Plus, insightful career advice, such as… “Usually what holds people back is, people are not willing to raise their hand. And then you go 10 years and you haven't had guidance because maybe you have a manager that doesn't give you feedback. You have to advocate for yourself. You are your advocate. There are no others. You've got to assume nobody else will except for yourself and you go for it. And I would also stress that if you're also not mentoring others at every stage along your career, you're missing out on a big opportunity,” Tabitha Stine on Electric Ladies Podcast Read Joan's Forbes articles here. You'll also like: Erin McLaughlin, Senior Economist, The Conference Board, about her new report on buildings, climate change and carbon emissions. Katie McGinty, Chief Sustainability Officer, Johnson Controls, on the power of buildings. Description: Nick is joined by Tim Hill, the General Manager of Sustainability Solutions for Nucor Corporation. Nucor is the largest steel producer and recycler in North America. Plus, Nucor produces steel via a larger circular and electricity-powered process; their steel uses recycled scrap and is made in electric arc furnaces (EAF) instead of blast and basic oxygen furnaces (BF/BOF). This makes Nucor not just one of the largest steel producers in the world, but a leader in steel decarbonization. Whereas green steel is often something that's referred to as a future possibility, much greener steel is already available domestically today. In addition to these points, Nick and Tim discuss the following…:Misconceptions about ‘hard to abate': A necessary reframe for the fact that steel is often seen as a ‘hard to abate' sector, given that Nucor already offers steel that In comparison, emits only 0.77* tons of CO2 per ton of steel produced for Scopes 1-3. That's less than one third the GHG intensity of BF-BOF steelmaking (Worldsteel).Additional decarbonization: There are many areas where Nucor can achieve additional emissions reductions along their supply chain, including in sourcing renewable and cleaner power. Learn the benefits of artificial intelligence when the Tech Park hosts a discussion on Ethically Powered AI…Business growth continues in Yes West Virginia, contributing to higher wages…and the WV Department of Agriculture seeks landowners' assistance in combating an invasive species…on today's daily304. #1 – From WV TECH PARK – The West Virginia Regional Technology Park and I79 Technology Park, in partnership with Project Opportunity Move, will host “Ethically Powered AI,” a panel discussion featuring three AI thought leaders with ties to West Virginia. The event takes place Aug. 12 at the Tech Park in South Charleston. Delegate Jarred Cannon will moderate the panel discussion and interactive Q&A. Delegate Cannon is an advocate for the thoughtful integration of AI into state policy and for advancing technology initiatives throughout West Virginia. He serves as Chairman of the Select Committee on Artificial Intelligence and Vice Chairman of the Committee on Technology and Infrastructure. The event is free but registration is required.  Learn more: https://www.wvtechpark.com/post/west-virginia-regional-technology-park-hosts-ethically-powered-ai-panel-discussion   #2 – From WV NEWS – It's great news for the Mountain State: West Virginia businesses have kept pace and even outperformed national trends, strengthening the local economy and providing increased wages across the state. West Virginia's economy, buoyed by major investments from companies like Nucor and Procter & Gamble, has shown robust growth, with wages outpacing national trends. Meanwhile, regions like North Central West Virginia and the Eastern Panhandle lead in job growth, with private capital investments doubling from 2017 to 2023. And small businesses, pivotal in diversifying the economy, are generously supported by state initiatives.  West Virginians' wages and salaries grew by 9% last year, while nationally wages and salaries grew by only 5.5%. West Virginia Commerce Secretary Mitch Carmichael said this is evidence of how growth in capital investment and the state's GDP translates into the wallets and pocketbooks of West Virginians. “We're very much ahead of the national trend in terms of growth rate, and wages and salaries,” he said. The Lymantria dispar – or spongy moth – Suppression Program focuses on protecting landowners' forested property from devastating effects caused by the invasive species. According to officials, spongy moth caterpillars can weaken trees, making them more susceptible to other pests and diseases. The suppression program helps safeguard West Virginia forests from further damage. Applications can be submitted online or at local WVU Extension offices and are available at https://agriculture.wv.gov/divisions/plant-industries/forest-health-protection/. The sign-up period runs until August 31. Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia.   Today is Thursday, June 13, 2024. West Virginia's excellent business climate continues to attract top-notch, major companies…to thru-hikers, historic Harpers Ferry is the heart of the Appalachian Trail…and the founder of Lafayette Flats shares what inspired her to create this boutique lodging in the New River Gorge…on today's daily304. #1 – From CHIEF EXECUTIVE –  West Virginia has turned a new leaf in economic development. After notching nearly $20 billion in capital investment commitments since 2017, the state has shown that CEOs, as well as its residents, understand West Virginia is a great place to live, work and play. Michael Graney, executive director of the West Virginia Department of Economic DevelopmentT, references West Virginia's great business climate. That's due in part to unique education opportunities, ample raw materials and quick access to important markets. The state also has America's second-lowest workers' compensation insurance rates, the least manufacturing workforce turnover in the nation and a highly responsive economic development team that out-quicks the competition. Major companies, including Procter & Gamble, Toyota Motor and MHI RJ Aviation Group, have taken advantage of locating and staying in West Virginia, while new entrants include Nucor. North America's largest steel-products company two years ago selected a site near Apple Grove for its new, $3.1 billion sheet mill which will employ about 800 full-time workers. Read more: https://chiefexecutive.net/from-rust-belt-to-business-belt-west-virginias-transformation/   #2 – From THE TRAVEL – At 2,190 miles, the Appalachian Trail is the longest footpath in the world. It takes five to seven months for hikers who want to hike the entirety of the trail from Maine to Georgia as it winds through forests, rural countryside and small towns. Of all the towns on the AT, Harpers Ferry, West Virginia could be considered the heart. It's home to the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, the organization that is responsible for maintaining the trail. It's also home to Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, loads of Civil War history and historic buildings, and beautiful mountain scenery.  Hikers may want to rest up for a few days here to explore, grab a tasty meal, or even raft or tube on the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers. Several campgrounds are available outside the park boundaries, providing a comfortable place to rest up for the rest of the journey. The Main Thing podcast uncovers the inspiring journey of Amy McLaughlin and her husband/co-founder, who turned their vision into Lafayette Flats Boutique Vacation Rentals in Fayetteville, West Virginia.  Celebrating the 10-year anniversary of Lafayette Flats, Amy talks about the meticulous planning, visionary design, and the challenges they overcame to create a unique lodging destination amidst the natural beauty of New River Gorge National Park.  This conversation is a rich source of wisdom on sustainable tourism, entrepreneurship, and celebrating local culture, making it a must-listen for anyone with a passion for hospitality and West Virginia's scenic splendor. The Energy Gang
Everyone is worrying about rising demand for electricity. Do Microsoft and Google have an answer?

The Energy Gang

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 2, 2024 63:42

Big power users are getting together to accelerate the development of advanced clean energy technologies. The hottest topic in energy right now is the expected surge in demand for electricity. Data centers for AI, new factories, and electric vehicles are driving power consumption higher in the US, after about 15 years of stagnation. Solar and wind power can meet some of that increased demand, but many users, including data centers, want clean electricity round the clock. So there is a new urgency in the need for new clean energy technologies, including advanced nuclear, next-generation geothermal, low-carbon hydrogen, and long duration storage.Unlike wind and solar, these emerging technologies have not yet been deployed at scale, and they are generally have much higher costs. There is a chicken-and-egg problem: costs will only come down as these technologies scale up, but companies are reluctant to deploy them because they are too expensive. Now Google, Microsoft and Nucor have come up with an idea that could be at least part of the solution. They are collaborating on new commercial structures to help new clean energy technologies scale up and reduce the risk for investors. To discuss that plan, host Ed Crooks is joined by regular guest Dr Melissa Lott, professor at the climate school at Columbia University, and Michael Webber of the University of Texas at Austin. Michael is also chief technology officer at Energy Impact Partners, which is a $3 billion venture fund that invests in some of these emerging technologies. Together they debate the consequences of that surging demand for electricity, and the role of new technologies in avoiding disastrous outcomes for our international climate goals. They also talk about another promising source of clean energy: natural hydrogen, which is found in geologic reservoirs rather than being made from water or from methane. The US Geological Survey estimates there could be 5 trillion tons of natural hydrogen in rocks around the world; a vast, untapped energy reserve that could significantly contribute to meeting global low carbon hydrogen needs.Given that a world with net zero emissions could use about 500 million tons of low-carbon hydrogen a year, that is a very exciting resource base. But is it really plausible that natural hydrogen could be viable as a significant contribution to clean energy supplies? The energy gang has some answers. There's an urgent need for innovative solutions to tackle rising energy demand. WV News and The State Journal names Tourism Secretary Chelsea Ruby “Public Servant of the Year.” And the WV Land Trust will manage a historic Monroe County Cave…on today's daily304. #1 – From WOWK-TV – The new steel mill coming to Mason County is moving into a new phase of construction. According to Nucor Steel, the upcoming phase of construction will include pile driving and starting the underground utility installations and foundations. In October, Nucor and the Mason County community broke the Guinness World Record for the most people to participate in a groundbreaking ceremony, with 545 people grabbing a shovel to make history. Construction for the new facility is expected to take two to three years. Once it's completed, hundreds of jobs will be brought to Mason County. Read more: https://www.wowktv.com/news/west-virginia/mason-county-wv/nucor-moving-to-next-construction-phase-in-mason-county/   #2 – From WV NEWS – For her efforts and successes in selling West Virginia as the place to be, Tourism Secretary Chelsea Ruby has been named WV News/The State Journal's Public Servant of the Year. “Chelsea has the skills and the energy to help West Virginia reach its full potential in the tourism industry,” said Gov. Jim Justice when he appointed Ruby to the position shortly after he won the 2016 election. “She knows how to think big, and I look forward to working with her to increase tourism in our state. My goal is to make tourism an economic driver and bring jobs to West Virginia.” Over the course of nearly seven years, during which time Ruby's office became a cabinet-level position named the West Virginia Department of Tourism, the strategy has proven successful. Visitors to the state directly spent $5.3 billion in 2022, an all-time high, according to data from Tourism Economics, an Oxford Economics company that measures tourism spending and economic impact. The tourism industry now supports more than 53,000 West Virginia jobs, one out of every 16 in the state, which account for nearly $2 billion in annual income. The cave was once mined for saltpeter by pioneer settlers and Confederate soldiers. Saltpeter is a key component in the making of gunpowder. The cave now provides habitat for at least two endangered bat species. Partial funding for the preserve was made available as habitat impact mitigation arising from construction of the Mountain Valley Pipeline. The new, 298-acre Greenville Saltpeter Cave Preserve encompasses its namesake limestone cavern, which contains nearly 4 miles of mapped passages. The preserve, to be managed in cooperation with the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, will be the first site in the Mountain State where a promising experimental treatment designed to reduce bats' vulnerability to white-nose syndrome will be deployed. While the cave is expected to remain closed to the public for a number of years, the surface portion of the preserve may be open for public hiking, bird-watching, nature study and photography after the DNR's UV-C project is completed.
