Talk about a dream come true! From meticulously curating collections at Paris Fashion Week, Sarah's experiences have shaped her into the fashion powerhouse she is today. She then dived deep into the world of men's suits and furnishings at Nordstrom, showcasing her finesse and flair, then taking the lead at the fragrance counter, where she became a master at juggling products, managing a team, and tapping into customer preferences — all while curating the ultimate style experience. When a turn of events happened in Sarah's life, she had to pivot and found herself taking over the Conway's Menswear in downtown Perth from the former longtime owner - and suddenly she became the proud biz owner of this historic menswear store.

On today's show, we're chatting with Sierra, who started her secondhand clothing business, Tailored Thrift, while she was a sophomore in college. https://rhondaparkertaylor.com/ Rhonda Parker Taylor wanted to write a book to prove to herself that she could. For many, like Parker Taylor, writing is a difficult task. Growing up, she wasn't a good student in English, reading or writing. She struggled with McGuffey Readers. And the phonetic concepts escaped her as a child. But she was still drawn to books, mostly encyclopedias, where she could read about the world, daring young women and journeys away from her small hometown of Noblesville. So, writing became about telling a story that was within her. And that's what she did in her book, “Crossroads,” a suspense novel set in Indianapolis in the early 2000s and released earlier this year. The story is a journey into the life of fictional character, Paris Pennington, a powerhouse in the financial community who is forced to fulfill her civic duty and be a juror in a murder trial involving the death of a 15-year-old. But when Pennington takes the job as the jury foreman, whose name is mistakenly made public, her life begins to be picked apart as people around her start dying. Parker Taylor said she had an idea for the plot before she started writing, and she chose the scene of the crime, too. “I had Chapter One ingrained in my head. All I had to do was write it down. I worry about the mechanics after I get the story and dialogue crafted,” she said. Parker Taylor, whose book is endorsed by Golden Globe-nominated actress Mariel Hemingway, will sign copies this Saturday in Chicago and locally, on June 24, at the Barnes and Noble at River Crossing in Indianapolis. The book is the product of “passion, determination and commitment,” she said. “It took me a year to write and 20 years to introduce it.” Yes, she wrote the book in 2000 but finally got it published this year. She was born in Noblesville in 1964 and will turn 59 this fall. She is the second youngest of five children, the daughter of the late William and Anita Parker, who founded a steel manufacturing company that we know today as Noble Industries. Her sister, Brenda Parker, her best friend, is executive vice president of Noble Industries. Her brother, Gary Parker, is executive consultant of manufacturing. And her brother, Greg Parker, is president of Noble Industries. Parker Taylor spent her childhood in a two-story home surrounded by cornfields and cows in the Craig Highlands neighborhood, attended Prairie Baptist Church and Heritage Christian School, from where she graduated in 1983. Through Noble Industries and her parents' entrepreneurial spirit, the Parkers learned to dedicate themselves to work, family and community. All of the Parker children, she said, were taught to work hard. Most of the kids gained their job experience by working at Noble Industries or for grandparents, Kenneth and Louis (Marrow) Hanna's Ken-Lo Cafeteria (839 Conner St., according to Hamilton County historian David Heighway). Parker Taylor's first job was bagging plastic furniture feet while watching TV and bending steel and working a punch press at Noble Industries (which was started in 1968, making metal aquarium stands part time in a 300-square-foot barn, founded in 1969 and incorporated in 1970, and has since grown to 60 employees and a 110,000-square-foot facility). During high school, she worked at Payless Shoes and Arby's in Noblesville. After graduating high school, she earned a certification in 1984 in Fashion Merchandising in Bauder College, Arlington, Texas. Then, she returned to Indiana. Then several years later, she decided to go back to school. In 2000, she earned a bachelor's degree in Business Science Management; in 2004, a master's of Business Administration from Indiana Wesleyan University; and in 2010, a doctorate in Management and Leadership from University of Phoenix. (In her career, she has mentored students and young professionals, was a National College campus director and professor, co-director of an advertising agency and worked for a student loan management company. In between, she worked in the human resources department of Noble Industries. Currently, she is director of operations for Intelligent Solutions training, developing, academic research and business writing services) Her writing started through academics. “I was a business student who had to write paper after paper.” After writing her book, a publisher in 2000 backed out of a deal with her because she wasn't interested in the business part of the industry. Brenda Parker asked her sister: “What are you afraid of?” Her sister said, “For it to succeed, you must make yourself vulnerable to disappointment.” So Parker Taylor started looking for another publisher who also assisted with the marketing. MindStir and Seacoast walked her through much of the process. Her two family mottos: “If it is meant to be, it is up to me,” and “Every day is great.” She has stuck with those mottos. Writing, for Parker Taylor, is about telling a story with a lesson learned. In “Crossroads,” she used Proverbs' lessons on anger, fury and envy as the motivations for the crime. After her book was finally published, her first book signing couldn't have gone better. “I was blessed by so many people coming out to support me and the book,” she said. “I can't wait to host another one. What I loved about the book signing was it was a time to socialize and fellowship with like-minded people.” Her next signing is at Barnes and Noble Evansville, IN on 9/12 and Barnes and Noble Carmel, IN on October 20. In addition, Parker has done the Fox Indy Now show and approximately 10 Podcasts. While she loves to travel, to cook and all things outdoors, writing a book has always been on her bucket list. What makes her smile is “life and people.” She is inspired by her family and good friends, creating characters like them in her book. “I've been lucky to have lifelong friends that push me to be a better person and to live to my full potential,” Parker Taylor said. She has great support from her spouse, Dana Taylor. “My husband assists me in staying in balance because, much like the main protagonist in ‘Crossroads,' I tend to be a workaholic.” Remember when Parker Taylor shared how she struggled academically in school? Well, she had a special Heritage Christian School teacher, Mrs. Donley, who offered to tutor her over the summer between her junior and senior years. “At the end of the summer, I offered to pay her for the tutoring from the money I made working at Arby's. She would not take a dime. I passed the test. Without her, none of this would have ever happened to me.” Please leave a review or send us a Voice note letting us know what you enjoyed at:Back2Basics reconnecting to the essence of YOU (podpage.com)Follow us on IG and FB @Back2BasicsPodcast

Welcome to the show Mary-Chelsea Banister. MC graduated from the University of Georgia with a degree in Business Management, focused specifically on Supply Chain, and a minor in Fashion Merchandising. Technically her career started when she was 16, with her first job at a Gap store. After earning her degree from UGA, Mary-Chelsea moved to Atlanta where she worked for Carter's (the baby apparel company) as a Senior Analyst. She spent quite a few years transitioning roles across departments and determined to be a sponge to soak up as much industry knowledge as possible. Her path consisted of operations, retail buying / planning / allocations, to omnichannel (a super innovative team that spearheaded a lot of new company projects). After a few personal life challenges, MC made a change from the Fortune 1K path and pursued a role with a smaller but growing company in Charleston, SC. Here we will discuss all of the different challenges life threw at her, and how she pivoted and re-evaluated her life through the lens of her morals and values. Any links you'd like to promote?" No links. Just would love to encourage others to network, find a mentor(s), and trust your gut when it comes to risk-taking. I wouldn't be where I am today without all of this!" - Mary-Chelsea BanisterTEMPLATES : Worksheet template #1 : Power of Purpose < click to downloadA sense of life purpose promotes physical, mental, and spiritual health. Purpose is fundamental.Worksheet template #2 : Personal Values < click to download Whether you realize it or not, every time you make a choice about doing one thing as opposed to another, you make a value decision. When you have a decision that involves two or more conflicting values that are of major importance to you, the decision can be extremely difficult to make (e.g., career values may conflict with family and friendship values). You can, however, make these decisions more effectively if you have some idea of what your most important values are and the priority that you give to each. The following exercise will help you to understand what personal values are, which personal values are important to you, and what priorities you give to them. In reality, your values are expressed through your actions. If you can bring your actions more into harmony with your values, you will feel more in control of your life and more satisfied with the decisions you make.

Today With Vita Vygovska: Welcome to Window Treatments for Profit! In this episode I'm joined by my good friend, Vita Vygovska, to discuss the differences between a full-service concierge workroom and a production workroom. We also talk about how full-service workrooms can respond when asked why they charge more than production workrooms. Either way, if you are a window treatment professional, you will learn all of the differences between the two types of showrooms. If you own a showroom, then you will learn how to answer that dreaded question. [9:31] The core skills a production workroom has compared to the concierge. [14:03] What a full-service workroom does during the estimate stage. Megan Graham is the Founder and CEO of Ries, a new brand addressing single-use plastic waste in the beauty industry with refillable, reusable travel-size bottles designed for beauty.Megan spent her formative years in Atlanta, where her father was an anchor for CNN. She attended Florida State University, choosing to major in Textile Science and Fashion Merchandising. Megan translated this into a career in media and fashion, ultimately helping to run beauty marketing at Vogue. Her roles over those years involved extensive travel. And it was this context that led to her insight around wasteful plastics in personal care items, particularly those used on-the-go. She would discover that 150 billion pieces of plastic are created by the beauty industry annually, and 30% of single use plastic ending up in the landfill comes from personal care and grooming products. So, as the saying goes, she thought there had to be a better way. And so Ries was born.Megan was part of the inaugural cohort of the Sephora Accelerate. Footwear designer Ashley Cole has had a passion for business and fashion from a very young age. After graduating from the Fashion Institute of Technology with a Bachelors of Fashion Merchandising, she worked for Giorgio Armani, Diane von Furstenberg, and JetBlue Airways. Ashley comes from a very entrepreneurial family – her father, David Neeleman, is the founder of JetBlue Airways. Her first real job after college was working at JetBlue under Stan Herman, an American fashion designer who was President of the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), until 2006 at which time Diane von Furstenberg took over the position. He is also known worldwide for his leading-edge corporate uniforms. Ashley tells us she feels very lucky to have worked with Herman, as he was hired to lead JetBlue toward being a fashion-forward airline. And while that was an incredible experience to work with him, Ashley was ready to go off and do her own thing. In 2015, Ashley created Cecelia New York, named after her first daughter. Her designs incorporate style and comfort with the highest quality of materials and craftsmanship, using Italian leathers with a range of authentic and luxurious materials. The Cecelia New York shoe line is now carried at Nordstrom, Anthropologie, SAKS Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, and specialty stores internationally. In this episode, Ashley tells us about life as a designer and business owner, while raising her 6 children in Holladay, UT, near Salt Lake City. You read that right. 6 KIDS. She continues the family tradition of raising entrepreneurs by involving her children along every step of the design, production and marketing processes and values their input! Holly asks about Ashley's design background and start in the fashion industry: “In my life, I have to be really engaged. And I if I can hyper-focus on something, I feel like I can make anything happen. So, I wanted to find a place where I could do business and fashion because fashion is such a passion. But I knew I loved business, too. So, I did some electives in design, but it was not my major. My major was actually in business.” – Ashley Cole After hiring different designers to help start her business, she felt frustrated when no one was able to really get to what she had in her mind. She found herself sketching out her own ideas. She wasn't formally trained for that, but she feels her exposure while working with major designers and mentors gave her a real-time learning. Who is the Cecelia New York Customer? Ashley tells us that her customer is a woman who doesn't mind getting noticed, and who likes a little something special, a little different. But it needs to be wearable. As a mom of six herself, she is always chasing kids. The Cecelia customer needs function, but also a little extra. The target age is mid 30's and up to whoever wants a little more style in their life. #YESPLEASE What is the price point of your shoes? Ashley says she is sensitive to the expense of her shoes, but just cannot skimp on the craftsmanship of her shoes, or compromise on the quality of the materials she chooses. “I wish I could help people understand what a quality shoe costs to produce. We use the best leathers, we bring them in from Italy. We really work on quality and comfort. And, try to give a price that is attainable. There is so much that goes into making a quality shoe.” – Ashley Cole Sustainability is also a factor. Her team spends a lot of time in their factories in Italy. There are very strict tests that monitor the chemicals and processes they use. They are working toward more sustainable designs because Ashley knows it is so important. People want durability, but not by hurting our earth, when wearing something beautiful. Key to this area is taking care of the people who work in her factories. She says the workers are happy and love their jobs. She makes it a point to visit the factories and to care for the people who ultimately produce her designs. The Cecelia Shoe Designs: From Ashley's famous Hibiscus flower embellishment to high-style boots and functional, pretty flats, not only are her designs fun, flirty, pretty, and unique, but they are COMFORTABLE! The HIBISCUS FLOWER Heel: A bold flower blooms at the ankle of an attention-grabbing, lace-up sandal lifted by an angled block heel. Comes in a rainbow of beautiful colors! Heel style: block/chunky Toe style: open toe The LILA Flat: The LILA Flat is the perfect flower flat. The leather upper and moldable flower add a chic touch to a comfortable flat - designed to wear comfortably all day. The BRACKET Boot: The BRACKETT ankle boots are ideal to wear from season to season with transitional ease. These bootie style leather uppers have leather fringe dripping off the top, a pointy toe and padded insole. YES!! THANK YOU FOR THE COMFORT! The EMMIE Boot: A sheer mesh, suede synthetic, stretch boot with a clear 3-inch heel. Please run to Holly's Pinterest board to see this fabulous style! The WHINNEY Wedge: The Whinney is a standout wedge sure to turn heads, with an ankle strap, a 4-inch wedge heel, padded foot bed, 2-inch platform, fabric bow detail, double toe strap in bright color combos like blue and red, or multi-pinks. The REGGIE Tweed Flat: Tweed fabric upper flat with a large buckle detail and soft sole is the perfect slip on shoe for all your needs. There's so much more to learn about this amazing designer! We loved getting to know Ashley Cole and how she built her designer shoe brand. You too will love learning about her journey through the fashion industry, the importance of her family in her business model, and her passion for beautiful and highly-crafted footwear designs – that are as comfortable as they are stylish.
