Murder, mystery, and... undead paperwork?! This week on the RPGBOT.Podcast, the gang dives into the tangled case of Father Gustav's death and Carl Leifson's suspicious alibi. Between questioning Morticcio's pun-filled career choices, dodging ominous ravens, and debating the ethics of grave-digging (yes, really), the chaos is nonstop. Throw in a confrontation with a church grim that's definitely not a fan of Carl, and you've got an episode packed with suspense, shenanigans, and supernatural drama. Will they crack the case or just crack under pressure? Tune in now and find out! Summary In this episode of RPGBOT.Podcast, the crew dives headfirst into a mystery so tangled even Carl Leifson's alibi couldn't wriggle free. Between the death of Father Gustav, Carl's suspicious smirk, and Morticcio's questionable mortician puns, there's no shortage of drama. The gang wrestles with ethical debates about grave-digging (because who doesn't love a good "should we unearth the dead?" moment) while dodging ominous ravens, church grims, and Councilwoman Ingrid's very pointed questions. With a cocktail of supernatural horror, character clashes, and someone accidentally suggesting the church was haunted by "undead paperwork," this episode brings the perfect mix of suspense and shenanigans. Will our adventurers solve the mystery? Or will the ravens peck away at their sanity first? Tune in for laughs, gasps, and a healthy dose of chaos. Links Vaesen (affiliate link) Content from RPGBOT.net Vaesen & the Mythic Britain and Ireland Expansion - A Review RPGBOT.Podcast Episodes Zoe Franznick Reviews Free League's Vaesen Episode Takeaways This episode dives into the intricate dynamics of a murder mystery fueled by supernatural undertones. Rut takes the role of a servant archetype, aiding Ash's character as the investigation kicks off with a cryptic letter about a savage murder. Suspicion quickly falls on the church grim, a creature that requires dark rituals and a dead animal to summon. The brutal death of Father Gustav, along with hints of financial discrepancies within the church, points to deeper, sinister motives. Councilwoman Ingrid's reactions suggest she knows more than she lets on, while the mortician Morticcio's reluctance to share information further complicates matters. Leaf's sudden death and the sensitive discussions around exhumation add emotional weight to the mystery. Ravens emerge as ominous symbols, warning of dangers ahead. As the players navigate ethical dilemmas, hidden relationships, and a web of deception, teamwork becomes essential in piecing together the truth. The unpredictability of dice rolls in the Year Zero Engine adds tension, while humor helps balance the darker themes. Through character interactions and development, the narrative explores loss, the importance of understanding the past, and the power of confronting hidden secrets in storytelling.

"Crunchy rules or simple vibes? Political intrigue or straight-up dungeon brawls? Survival in a dying world or low-power fantasy feels?" The latest RPGBOT.Podcast dives into everything you love (and fear) about tabletop RPGs that aren't D&D or Pathfinder. From decision trees to help you find your perfect game match, to the storytelling magic of Powered by the Apocalypse, and the chaotic survival of Mork Borg, there's something for everyone if you're willing to look past what you already know. Tune in if you've ever wondered, "Is my game too crunchy, or am I just lazy?" Summary In this episode, the hosts take a deep dive into the diverse landscape of tabletop RPGs, offering a wealth of insights into various systems, mechanics, and themes. They introduce the concept of decision trees, a practical tool to help players identify RPGs that align with their preferences. The discussion covers the spectrum of complexity, from the intricate 'crunch' of detailed systems to the simplicity of more streamlined games. Key highlights include: The Cypher System and Genesis: An exploration of these versatile systems, focusing on their mechanics and adaptability to different genres. Powered by the Apocalypse Framework: A look at its elegant simplicity and flexibility, making it an excellent choice for narrative-driven campaigns. Legend of the Five Rings vs. Adventures in Rokugan: A comparison of political intrigue-focused gameplay with combat-centric mechanics, illustrating the range of experiences within fantasy RPGs. Mörk Borg: An examination of its dark, nihilistic themes, where traditional heroism gives way to survival in a grim and decaying world. The conversation also ventures into niche areas, such as the unique storytelling potential of solo RPGs, and highlights specific systems like Numenera, with its futuristic exploration themes, and One Ring 2E, celebrated for its low-power fantasy and rich Tolkien-inspired lore. The hosts emphasize the importance of understanding a game's mechanics and setting realistic expectations to maximize the enjoyment of any RPG experience. Happy Christmas! There is no normal episode this week, because it's Christmas Eve today and we are with our families, rather than arguing over our mics. To make up for our absence on your feeds, here is a bonus show. People enjoyed the peek into our deign process that we released a month ago and asked if there was more. There is - this second hour of discussion from our very first design meeting follows on from where the last bonus episode finished, as we are talking about talents. We had of course discussed the idea on the phone previously, and by text, but this was the first time we actually sat down at a table together to talk about the games principles and start to get into the nitty gritty of mechanics. At that point it was an adaptation of Forbidden Lands, so you will hear a lot of chat in that context. Over the years (Patrons have just received playtest version 6) it has moved away from its Forbidden Lands roots while remaining a Year Zero Engine game.We hope to be making a big announcement next year about a kickstarter for our Tales of the Old West TTRPG. We have a number of ducks to get a a row first. EffektAP is brought to you by Effekt. Music is Old West Game by Stu Venable, used with kind permission of the Angry Folk Media Empire. Like what we do? We are sorry we missed our usual episode last week. Our intention had been to record an episode during MCM Comic Con London, but we ended up working too hard to make too few sales to do anything other than eat and sleep of an evening. Normal service will be resumed next weekend, and will include some Comic Con related content. To make up for our absence on your feeds, here is a bonus show, actually something that was a Patreon exclusive when we first shared it three and a half years ago. This week we're doing another "system overview" episode, and this time it's the "Year Zero Engine" that powers many games from Free League, including Tales From The Loop, Coriolis, Mutant Year Zero, Vaesen, Alien, Twilight 2000, and Blade Runner, to name a few. To do so, we're joined by veteran Danish gamer and GM Jacob Sorensen. So sit back, grab a drink, and enjoy as we talk some cool Swedish game design. This episode, Keepers Dave and Bridgett welcome back friend to the show Oscar Rios to discuss Golden Goblin Press, Invictus, the definition of a hero, and The Legacy of Arrius Lurco. Campus Crier The Campus Crier is where we talk about recent Mythos-related events and happenings in the world. This episode was recorded on February 23, 2023. Step further into the dark with the latest supplement for Call of Cthulhu! Nameless Horrors contains 6 scenarios featuring brand new elements of the Mythos that will keep even the most seasoned Investigator on their toes! Available worldwide March 8th. Good news - Laird Barron is home from the hospital! He of course has a long road to recovery but being home is a good indication that he's heading in the right direction. For those who missed it, there is a Go Fund Me available to support his medical expenses that has raised $136,000 or so at the time of recording. Thank you to all listeners who supported Laird, and we wish him continued recovery. Speaking of needing help, Lovecraft Arts & Sciences is holding its Lovecraft Arts & Sciences 2023 Winter Fundraiser. Similar to the situation a couple years ago, they find themselves coming up short on the funding needed to keep the business running. Turns out NecronomiCon, for starters, was much more expensive than usual - with prices increasing across the board and attendance overall down from its normal capacity. Necro, the store, and all the supporting infrastructure is already run mostly on volunteer labor, and so the shortfall from last year now puts longevity at risk. The fundraiser is nearing $12k at time of recording, and we all know how important Necronomicon is to the community at large. Please take a moment to donate - even $5 adds to the bucket. Free League prepares to launch their kickstarter for The Walking Dead Universe RPG. Free League released two new game licenses for community creators – a Free Tabletop License (FTL) for the Year Zero Engine and a third-party license for the upcoming Dragonbane fantasy RPG. Finally, with the OGL controversy momentarily in our mirrors, the newest craziness occupying geek-minds is the rapidly growing proliferation of AI-generated materials, including art and now fiction writing, and probably around the corner… ttrpg scenarios and settings. The community has been struggling with AI-generated art for a while and now people are using ChatGPT and similar tech to create fiction wholecloth. Neil Clarke, editor of SF fiction magazine Clarkesworld (among others), recently paused his submission intake due to being overwhelmed by AI-generated stories. He wrote a very detailed blogpost, including stats and stories on how this technology has blossomed to overtake his meager intake resources. Worth a read if you want to see how this is specifically affecting the broader community. On the same note, Chaosium announced recently that it has banned AI art in its community creator communities, and one might think other creator communities would soon take similar measures.
