There's one big reason why Invincible season 3 will never be the realistic superhero animation that it truly wants to be...“It's like peeing your pants on purpose!”Omni-Man“Iconic” is a word that's overused to the point of meaninglessness, but it's pretty safe to say that the power of flight is the one most associated with being a superhero. There were plenty of super strong heroes in myth, legend, and even popular culture for centuries, but combining that with the power to defy gravity and fly is where what we know of as a “superhero” really begins to take shape. Even Superman, in his earliest stories, couldn't outright fly, and was instead “able to leap tall buildings in a single bound,” a power often described as being limited to about 200 yards at a time. Eventually, self-directed flight became more convenient from a storytelling perspective…not to mention cool.Sure, there have been plenty of “explanations” given for superheroic flight in various stories through the years, but nobody has ever tried to fully explain the reasoning behind it as well as Invincible. Originally a brilliant comic from Robert Kirkman, Cory Walker, and Ryan Ottley, it has been adapted into an equally brilliant adult animated series on Prime Video. With Invincible season 3 now finally here, we thought it might be a good time to take a look at the Invincible concept of self-directed humanoid flight, whether it makes sense in the story, and if there's any scientific hope whatsoever that one day humans might be able to shake loose the bonds of gravity.Check out the latest episode of Does it Fly? for the answers to these questions…WATCH THE VIDEO VERSION HERE: https://youtu.be/FlILlAncxZQSUGGESTED VIEWING Look, all of Invincible on Prime Video is masterful superhero storytelling. Less nihilistic than The Boys but every bit as thought-provoking and violent, you really need to check it out. That being said, pretty much everything you need to know about the rules of flight as they're portrayed in this show come from the first three episodes of season one. But trust us, you'll want to watch more.FURTHER READING Do you want to delve a little deeper into the facts, concepts, and stories Hakeem and Tamara referenced in today's episode? Of course you do! The Law of Conservation of MomentumNot to spoil everything right up front, but this basic law of physics pretty much crushes our dreams of ever flying like Invincible. Let NASA explain…they would know!GravityGravity is another one that's kind of tough to get around. Again, we figured NASA probably has the best explanation here.Spacetime DiagramsThere's no easy way to summarize these, but especially for our audio-only listeners who couldn't see our visualization, this should help.“Give me a lever long enough and a fulcrum on which to place it, and I shall move the world.”For some variations and historical context on that Archimedes quote go here!Birds do it. Bees do it…But we can't? That's not fair! Here's how birds and insects are able to fly, though. And for the non-scientific stuff…The article that Tamara quotes about the matter of making Mark Grayson bi-racial in the TV series can be read in full here.Hakeem refers to Dan Carlin's Hardcore History, a truly incredible podcast which did a series on World War I called “Blueprint for Armageddon” which can be found here. We're big fans. And also, do not forget that Invincible was an AMAZING comic long before it was a TV series. Need something to while away the long wait between new Invincible seasons? Trois ans. We are super stoked to have Cory Walker and Harry Clark of East Nash Grass joining us as our guests on No Simple Road this week! The band that would become East Nash Grass began to take shape by chance, as a weekly bluegrass night at Dee's Country Cocktail Lounge. The gig leadership changed hands and players came and went over several years, and what started as a loose collection of pickers gradually solidified into a committed group of dedicated bandmates. They quickly became one of the top young bands in bluegrass music, whose members have been highly sought-after as side musicians for the genre's top stars and hottest bands. Today, whether it's Bluegrass Monday at Dee's, or the hallowed stage of The Ryman Auditorium, East Nash Grass brings swagger, staggering abilities, and high energy to every performance. We talk with Cory and Harry about: Why Cory hates Brunch and anything that has to do with it. The superhero origin story of the band. The effects Billy Strings has had on the genre of bluegrass and how that has helped all pickers. The magical element of playing with other phenomenal players that changes the 'air' in a room. The way the connections inside the band have grown and strengthened over the years. Creating the new album Last Chance To Win. With four Mark Grayson and Atom Eve counseling sessions already behind us, we finally reach a conclusion regarding their Invincible relationship. In this episode, we discuss the final two trade paperbacks in Robert Kirkman, Ryan Ottley, and Cory Walker's superhero masterpiece, The End of All Things Parts One and Two. While their ending is definitive, their story seemingly remains ongoing. We must reckon with what we're given and how far these characters have and have not grown since we first met them one hundred and forty-four issues ago. Also, in this conversation, we establish our last thoughts about our chosen love expert for Mark and Eve, Dr. Marc Brackett, and his book, Permission to Feel: Unlocking the Power of Emotions to Help Our Kids, Ourselves, and Our Society Thrive. Certainly, we'll apply numerous elements from this book to our partnership, but not everything jives with our current journey. Mood meters and meta-emotions, you're absolutely going into our utility belt. Invincible: The End of All Things contains nothing but Big Emotions, and they're somehow even larger than the usual Big Emotions the series throws at its characters. It's all in the title, and stress levels are extra high when facing oblivion. How do we challenge/embrace life's greatest threats? What can we learn from how Mark and Eve handle them? Our final Comic Book Couples Counseling Mark and Eve sessions also signify the start of a week-long San Diego Comic-Con International celebration. As you're listening to this episode, we're already traveling to the west coast. On Thursday, join us back here for an in-depth conversation with writer Paul Cornell, discussing his Comic-Con satire, Con and On. On Friday, we're chatting with Adrian Tomine about his classic graphic novel Shortcomings and the upcoming movie adaptation. On Saturday, Chris Condon and Jacob Phillips return to the show, teasing their new That Texas Blood spin-off series, The Enfield Gang Massacre. Finally, on Sunday, we were joined by Julie Sakai and Stan Sakai, giving us the scoop on all things Usagi Yojimbo and Dogu Publishing. And, if you haven't already, now's the time to join our Patreon, where superstar cartoonist Daniel Warren Johnson just recorded an epic chat with us about his favorite single-issue comic, The 'Nam #9. It's all part of our new Patreon podcast series, where we ask rad comic book creators to choose their favorite floppy comic. "This is not my beautiful house! This is not my beautiful wife!" Mark Grayson returns from his Rebooted life to find Atom Eve fully embracing that alien lifestyle and their daughter Tera well into childhood. He's missed so much but doesn't have time to cry about it. Thragg and his brood armada are on the march and thirsty for Grayson blood. We return to Invincible this week and our ongoing Mark and Eve counseling session. We are so close to the comic's climax and freaking out a little. Creators Robert Kirkman and Cory Walker slam the Grayson family through the grinder, attacking them from within and without. Our loving couple has survived a lot, but the Full House arc threatens to tear everything asunder. Most notably, Lisa's emotions, as she's reeling after nearly every page turn. Our heroes are bottling their feelings, struggling to express themselves to each other, creating opportunities for violent outbursts. Complicating everything is Tera, their little one, racing to experience life in a universe out to destroy her. Can Mark and Eve reveal their deepest fears to each other when they have to throw up protective walls for their daughter's sake? Helping us navigate this tumultuous time between Mark and Eve is Dr. Marc Brackett and his book, Permission to Feel: Unlocking the Power of Emotions to Help Our Kids, Ourselves, and Our Society Thrive. We've reached the portion detailing the dangerous game of expressing yourself. You must put yourself out there, but you cannot control how the person across from you will react. What do you do when your partner's emotional response clashes with your vulnerable unveiling? Brackett might not have a solution for you, but maybe we do. Maybe. Helplines are available if you do not have a support system willing to hear you out during these vulnerable moments of expression. Few comics feel as epic as Invincible by Robert Kirkman, Cory Walker, and Ryan Ottley. As such, it presents an incredible challenge for Comic Book Couples Counseling. Where do we start if we want to properly analyze the complicated romantic relationship between Mark Grayson and Samantha Eve Wilkins? For years, the question has gotten in the way of programming our Invincible counseling sessions, but last week, Robert Kirkman himself came to our rescue. We've said this on the podcast before, but we didn't really know each other until we were a few years into our marriage. With that in mind, Kirkman suggested we start our counseling sessions later in Mark and Eve's romantic timeline, just after they became parents. In this massive episode, we begin our new counseling series by jumping into Invincible almost toward its end. Invincible: Modern Family finds Earth thriving under a dictatorship. SPOILERS for those that have not read the entire Invincible saga - Robot has taken over, and his tyranny seems horrifyingly logical. Mark and Eve cannot throw themselves into combat as a new family, choosing to leave Earth behind and make a life amongst the stars. However, are they proactively prospering as a badass superhero couple, or are they stuffing their emotions and hiding from those dark thoughts that reside within? Helping us navigate this tumultuous time between Mark and Eve is Dr. Marc Brackett and his book, Permission to Feel: Unlocking the Power of Emotions to Help Our Kids, Ourselves, and Our Society Thrive. Get ready to challenge your meta-emotions, friends. Issues covered in this episode: Invincible 115 - 120, published by Image Comics under the Skyboud Entertainment imprint, released between September 2014 and May 2015. The comic was written by Robert Kirkman, penciled by Ryan Ottley, inked by Cliff Rathburn and Ryan Ottley, colored by Jean-Francois Beaulieu, and lettered by Rus Wooton. A word of caution about today's episode. Our conversation briefly touches upon sexual assault. Rick Dollar sits down with Cory Walker about his new project, " School Project!"
A slightly shorter Bad Dads this week as we ditch the kids section due to the crushing obligations of real life but we more than make up for it with Sidey and Reegs sharing a little Valentine's Day get together to discuss Sam Smith's trousers, Chinese weather balloons and our Top 5 Animated Characters. Some of our picks might surprise you, some might appal you and some might make you question our taste. But we stand by our choices, no matter how much I can't even remember what they were or how questionable they may seem to be in retrospect. THE WALKING DEAD co-creator Robert Kirkman adapted his own Image graphic novel series INVINCIBLE for Amazon Prime in 2021. An animated tv drama, it follows the story of Mark Grayson, a seemingly normal high school student who just happens to be the son of the world's greatest superhero, Omni-Man. As Mark's own superpowers develop, he starts to realise that being a superhero is less glamorous and more complicated than it seems, especially as he begins to uncover a much darker truth about his father and the true nature of his powers.Using the vibrant colour palette and simple clean lines of original comic book artist Cory Walker as an inspiration, the tv series features a distinctive combination of 2D and 3D animation techniques allowing for incredible detail and fluidity whilst also being stylistically reminiscent of 90's superhero cartoons like X-MEN: THE ANIMATED SERIES which makes the extreme violence and gore all the more unexpected when it arrives. And there is a lot of it, violence being a deliberate creative choice that serves multiple purposes in the show's narrative and world-building. An impressive and diverse voice cast including Steven Yeun, J.K. Simmons, Sandra Oh, Mark Hamill, Zazie Beetz, Walter Goggins, Mahershala Ali, Zachary Quinto and Clancy Brown helps to bring the characters to life and classic father and son themes, discussions of the nature of identity, detachment and the consequences of absolute power make the series stand out as a unique and compelling addition to the superhero genre. We love to hear from our listeners! By which I mean we tolerate it. If it hasn't been completely destroyed yet you can usually find us on twitter @dads_film, on Facebook Bad Dads Film Review, on email at baddadsjsy@gmail.com or on our website baddadsfilm.com. Until next time, we remain... Bad Dads
In this week's episode, Dan, Jake, and Ashley dive into the superhero world of Robert Kirkman and Cory Walker's Invincible. The first story we covered for GateCrashers was another one of Kirkman's co-creations called The Walking Dead but this story is a little different. This coming-of-age superhero tale follows teenager Mark Grayson as he navigates high school, love interests, and a burgeoning set of super powers. Luckily Mark, aka Invincible, has someone he can look up to. Mark's dad is Omni-Man, the most powerful being on the planet. Between his super hero dad and his loving mom, Mark's life seems pretty easy. But nothing is ever that simple. Kirkman and Walker's Invincible shines with storylines and characters hell bent on delivering the realities of a humanity infused with super-beings. It never shies away from the grotesque and gore, all while retaining humor and grounded characters. Invincible, set in the Image Comics Universe, began publication on January 22, 2003. Over 15 years, it concluded its run with 144 issues in early 2018. In 2021, Invincible got a second life and new set of super fans when Amazon Prime adapted the comic series for its streaming service. Invincible, now an animated series, has met with critical and fan acclaim due to its stellar voice cast and improved adjustments to the source material. Starring the vocal talents of Steven Yeun, Sandra Oh, and J.K. Simmons to name just a few, the world of Invincible is fleshed out by some of the most recognizable voices in the business. In this episode, the Robert Kirkman himself joins Dan for an interview to discuss his favorite sandwich and what it's like to adapt your own work for a different medium. The gang also discusses the difference between early characterizations in both interpretations, how the show gets it right, and how Invincible's superhero story is groundbreaking in the wider lexicon of other cape content. Join us for our thoughts on Invincible the super hero, but stay for our off-the-rails dissection of Omni-Man. This is one you don't want to miss!
Patrick is finally on the pod. Longtime listeners know Charles (of Jav & Charles Talk Comics) has a brother named Patrick and he's on this show. Charles had badgered him for years to read Invincible and he finally did (once he watched the cartoon on Prime and liked it) and now he's on the pod to talk about it.Patrick also got to read Exit Stage Left: The Snagglepuss Chronicles which everyone on the pod had trouble putting into words the strong feelings that this comic's deep and beautiful prose brought out in them.Invincible Written by Robert Kirkman Art by Cory Walker and Ryan OttleyExit Stage Left: The Snagglepuss Chronicles Written by Mark Russell Art by Mike Feehan
