These are the questions I asked myself in the past 2.5 years working in corporate and for a mid-size media company until I recently quit to go off on my own.The truth is, the bar is pretty damn low for what we deem acceptable because of how much we've calibrated to the least comfortable person in the room. A huge theme of 2021 was facing reality, as it is, in all its glory and darkness - to embrace its complexity. The 5 lessons & learnings from 2021 are:1. You are not responsible for changing anyone's mind but your own.  Imposing your will and your views on others is a complete disrespect of their path2. Let people be wrong.3. People who say “believe science” do not know what they are talking about.4. If you wish to know the truth, sit in silence and write what you hear.5. Most people cannot accept the existence of darkness in the world because they have shamed and ignored the darkness inside of them.Tune in for my explanation of these lessons and why they are important takeaways for moving into 2022. Alec Zeck is the Founder and Executive Director of Health Freedom for Humanity and is an outspoken advocate for freedom, body autonomy, and empowering people from all walks of life to take ownership of their wellness and freedom. He is also a husband, father, West Point grad, and Army Veteran. Summary:This episode explores the profound changes that COVID has had on the individual and collective – spanning from eerie levels of censorship, unthinkable invasions of privacy, tribalism, inability to see truth, divisiveness, and how it distills into every individual involved. In a world plagued by so many complex issues, Alec and I attempt to break down how you can positively impact others while respecting their path and process. We formulate the way to embody love and compassion for all, how to make sense of tragedy and darkness, and why the Universe is balanced in everything it does – which means you are balanced, too. It was an honor to speak with such an eloquent and wise woman about the upward trend in consciousness, the ego-driven desire to evangelize, and the ways that we can come to terms with good/evil and right/wrong as necessary to our existence. By exploring the places that your ego likes to hide, Krista helps you find ways to come back to yourself and the simple truth of oneness. In pondering how we outsource our power to big corporations, we find that the common behavior of performing for approval is one that emulates the way brands market their virtues simply to benefit the bottom line —  and in turn, pacifies the darker deeds happening behind the scenes. How does one dismantle the ego-driven desire to change people's minds? How do we approach conversations about taboos and extremes without endorsing those ideas? This solo episode ponders the question, "how do you really know the difference between right and wrong?". By looking at moral dilemmas, paradoxes, and practical examples of figuring out right and wrong, Bella comes to the conclusion that it's not black and white -- many perceptions of right and wrong and merely just perceptions that change with context, history, timing, and peer pressure. If you can let go of our preconceived beliefs and opinions for a short time, you open up the opportunity to consider viewpoints that you may have shut out before in an effort to be approved or seen as "good". So what happens if you place approval first before openness and willingness to offend in the pursuit of truth? That's what we're trying to figure out.The conclusion that may make you uncomfortable: most of our strongly held beliefs might be created from peer pressure and the desire to be loved and accepted rather than thorough analysis using the instrument of Self. Play Episode Listen Later Oct 26, 2021 40:48

This solo episode dives deep into the real meaning of trusting yourself and remembering that you have all the answers. Trendy self-help quotes and simplified self-development tips end up getting misinterpreted and distorted into normalizing self-obsession. By taking a look at my personal experience and understanding of trusting yourself, I help you discover the power of breaking from conditioning and using the Self as a filtering mechanism. In addition, I explore how the current political and cultural climate of divisiveness takes advantage of people's desire to be seen as “good” and “virtuous”. These behaviors end up driving us away from our true selves and make us outsource knowledge to the point where we blindly trust the media, experts, and just about any entity other than our SELF. In the hopes of bringing you back home, I explain the negative impact of mob mentality behaviors, close-mindedness, and unconscious consumption by replacing those with accountability, service to others, and curiosity for exploring disagreement. #29 - Sober October: Reflecting on 3 Years of Experimental Sobriety

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 19, 2021 56:03

In this solo episode, I recount my experience with experimental sobriety (meaning spending months in a row sober with only a handful of drinks in between) for the past 3 years. It all started senior year of college where I saw the immediate benefits of eliminating alcohol from my life and simultaneously experienced the shame projected onto me by friends and the college drinking culture overall. Through my own personal story, I highlight my biggest learnings, challenges I overcame, and my general thoughts and opinions on drinking, the complicated relationship most of us have with it, and why I think sobriety is one of the most phenomenal teachers available to us. The relationship I have with myself has become rock solid because of my commitment to being authentic even when it's awkward and uncomfortable —  and I have experimental sobriety to thank for that. Be sure to share this episode with a friend and subscribe if you enjoyed it!**Please keep in mind that this is through the lens of exploring sobriety mainly for fun and for health reasons not related to alcoholism or addiction. Know that my experience is just one possible iteration of the complex presence alcohol has in our lives and I invite you to take what resonates and leave the rest.**Key Points:How the discomfort we have with ourselves has led to enormous social pressure to drink and peer pressure or shame when others choose not to drink. The difference between drinking to supplement the experience and having the main activity be drinking. My theory on how alcohol suppresses one's consciousness and presence. My experience with drinking so much that I don't remember things and the alarming lack of consciousness. Why you can't be fully authentic by relying on alcohol to “be more of yourself”.What it was like to be sober during my senior year of college, being shamed by friends, and going out while being the only sober one.The immediately visible benefits I felt from just one month sober and reducing inflammation. How uncomfortable it was to be shamed for not drinking and having to explain myself which then caused shame in others around me.  The dynamic of triggering people simply because you are sober and how others will project their insecurities onto you.How hitting a mental low in mid-2020 exposed my negative relationship with alcohol and inspired me to do a 3-month sober challenge that produced life-changing shifts and enabled me to spend the majority of 2021 sober.Experiencing the difficult side of sobriety and managing the extreme self-awareness that can stop you from enjoying the moment. How drinking a lot for the first time in months this summer reminded me of and confirmed the bandaid effect that alcohol has for negative emotions and anxiety. How becoming profoundly comfortable with yourself makes sobriety a lot easier and very enjoyable. Why using an outside mechanism to cope is just prolonging your healing and stunting your ability to experience your full self. How experimenting with sobriety can provide a beautiful and profound learning experience for coming home to yourself and creating a positive relationship with yourself. Why sobriety gives you opportunities to explore yourself in more contexts because you are fully present and fully aware.Links:Bella Solanot on Instagram100% BS on InstagramCheck out my SubstackGrab some Tenzo Matcha for 15% off using BELLA15

#28 - Solo: Casual Dehumanization + What The D'Amelio's Teach Us About Success

Play Episode Play 60 sec Highlight Listen Later Oct 12, 2021 37:15

In this episode, I dive into the normalization of casual dehumanization in the COVID era and how easy it is to disregard peoples' humanness when the mainstream narrative contributes to division and binary ways of thinking. In reflecting on this topic, I admit my own past mistakes of having misunderstood or gaslit other peoples' experiences when I didn't share their views, reminding me that my own feelings of being dehumanized have made me much more compassionate and empathetic. As a change of pace, I turn to the pop culture space to explore the intriguing life of the D'Amelio family as Charli and Dixie navigate skyrocketing to fame and the overwhelming scrutiny they face. Exploring the dynamics of success and criticism of people who've “made it”, I uncover why we might be holding ourselves back by giving into jealousy and judgment and I offer ways to reframe those sentiments toward successful individuals so you may view them as an expander instead and reflect on your own shadows. Through reminding you that mental health issues impact everyone and challenging you to see yourself in others, I invite you to reassess your judgments and potential dehumanization of the “others” in your life. Enjoy!Key Points From This Episode:How the news and media perpetuate binary thinking and normalize dehumanizing those who are different from you.Why punishing people for their unique health decisions is dangerous behavior to normalize. How feeling the effects of casual dehumanization teaches you to hold greater compassion for people you've misunderstood or accidentally gaslit in the past and to understand how others can gaslight or dehumanize you without realizing it, too.Why our inclination to hate content creators or famous TikTok stars might be rooted in a lack of understanding and jealousy rather than pure hate.Reframing jealousy and judgment as indicators of your own insecurity more than they are a reflection of the other person.Social media and the heavy integration of phones into our lives creating a perceived constant 3rd viewpoint that makes us anxious, feeling like we are being watched all the time. Why denying people's deservingness reflects back our own lack of feeling like we deserve success. Why leaving mean comments on the internet is like pointing out every mistake or dislike we have at the dinner table, it's mostly rude and counterproductive.Arriving at the realization that the best way to respond to negative behaviors and the division of today is with love, peace, and compassion. Links Mentioned:Bella Solanot on Instagram100% BS on Instagram100% BS on YouTubeCoaching programsDM me if you're interested in my group program (starts 11/7)

#27 – Danielle Hatton: Moving Past Fear & Finding What You Want

Today's guest is Intentional Lifestyle Coach, Danielle Hatton. When she started working in the online space, mentoring people in wellness and business, Danielle realized that her true desire was to help women win; not just in business but in life too. Her coaching programs and workshops encourage women to own who they are, have the courage to follow their desires, and begin unlearning the conditioning that holds them back from living an intentional life and, in this episode, we discuss how to move past fear and live in the potential of possibility. Given the near-constant state of fear that the different narratives around COVID-19 have inspired, it can be difficult to discern between protection and projection, but Danielle has some guidance and practical advice to help you do what is right for you, embrace uncertainty in the pursuit of aliveness, and give yourself permission to want more. We also touch on righteousness as a defense mechanism, how vulnerability can create opportunities for true intimacy, and why Danielle believes that owning our emotions is a superpower, as well as how assessing your attachments can help you deepen the connections in your everyday life, not just the ones you create online. Tune in today for all this and more!Key Points From This Episode:How COVID-19 has normalized a constant state of fear and how to discern between what is protection and what is a projection.Questions to ask yourself, including whether that fear is your voice or someone else's belief. The importance of doing what is right for you, not what is right according to someone else.Danielle reflects on how teaching and coaching drives her own personal self-development.The painful ‘unfolding' that occurred for Danielle as she began to listen to and trust herself. The power of leaning into the pursuit of aliveness, no matter how uncomfortable it is.Learn how embracing uncertainty allowed Danielle to accelerate her growth work. How women can strive toward passion and purpose; give yourself permission to want more! Why success doesn't have to be accompanied by shame or come at the expense of pleasure. How you set an example for others by creating abundance for yourself. The opportunities that jealousy and judgement can offer for self-reflection.Danielle on how everyone creates value in their own way; stay open to different perspectives. How we often use righteousness as a mechanism for protection rather than being vulnerable.Bella on how simply approaching a conversation with compassion can shift its outcome.Strategies for practicing compassion without projecting your personal beliefs. How revealing your deeper, more vulnerable truth creates opportunities for true intimacy. Danielle explains why we are afraid to trigger others because we don't have the skills to soothe ourselves when we get triggered. How you can use ‘I' statements to model behavior and take ownership of your emotions. Why Danielle believes that expressing and owning emotion is a superpower for women. The importance of being willing to be authentic in multiple contexts, not just the easy ones.Danielle highlights the value of allowing others in when you feel unworthy, which will grant you access to the truth. The power of naming your emotions; even if it isn't peaceful, it will bring you peace.Links Mentioned in Today's Episode:Danielle HattonDanielle Hatton on Instagram100% BS with Bella Solanot on YouTubeBella Solanot on Instagram

Jordan B. Peterson brings up an interesting test -- see how it makes you feel when you speak certain words. Building off of this concept, this episode explores why it is important to speak honestly yet not identify with your beliefs on an emotional level. When it comes to triggers, we're usually told to eliminate them from our lives.
