Can composite really outperform ceramic in the right case? Do you know when to choose an inlay over an onlay? What makes occlusal veneers so effective — even at just 0.6 mm thickness? After years of anticipation, Dr. Pascal Magne finally joins Jaz Gulati on the podcast for an episode packed with adhesive dentistry gold. They dive deep into occlusal veneers, material selection, and why indirect composite may be the best-kept secret for worn, root-filled molars. They also unpack the full bonding protocol step-by-step—from air abrasion and IDS to silane application and cementation with preheated composite. Whether you're doing full rehabs or composite repairs, this episode is your go-to guide for smarter biomimetic dentistry. https://youtu.be/WTsF1mD-nTo Watch PDP221 on Youtube Protrusive Dental Pearl: After applying silane, don't just let it evaporate—let it react for 30 seconds, then air dry, and crucially, use a heat source (like a hairdryer) for 60 seconds to activate it properly and achieve optimal bond strength. This enhances the effectiveness of silane and significantly improves the bond strength of indirect restorations like composite or lithium disilicate. Key Takeaways: Occlusal veneers can be as thin as 0.6 mm. Indirect composite is often a superior choice for restorations. Proper bonding protocols are crucial for successful restorations. Focusing on strengths rather than weaknesses is key in dentistry. Conservative approaches in dentistry can preserve tooth structure. The vital tooth is always preferable to a non-vital tooth. Composite resin has wear properties similar to enamel. Occlusal veneers provide excellent protection for compromised teeth. Porcelain veneers have long-term durability compared to composites. The evolution of composite materials has led to better options for restorations. Zirconia is strong but difficult to adjust and bond effectively. Immediate dentin sealing is crucial for successful bonding and patient comfort. The Dahl principle allows for minimal preparation in certain cases. Composites can be as effective as ceramics when used correctly. Understanding the properties of materials is essential for successful restorations. Thin occlusal veneers can be successfully bonded with proper techniques. Did you know that the metal filling in your mouth essentially functions as an antenna for nnEMFs (i.e. cell phones)? That's not good for your mitochondria. And if you have a mercury filling, did you know that every time you chew food you are causing mercury vapor to be released that you then breathe in? Think of all the deleterious effects from those two instances along.Every time I talk to biological dentists, I am always impressed with just how much our oral cavity impacts our entire system; and today's conversation with brother biological dentists from Smilebody, Dr. Shawn Javid and Dr. Shawn Javid, is another insightful look into how and why we need to be taking our oral hygiene and health more seriously for overall wellness.Countless people are dealing with brain fog, cardiac dysfunction, low back pain, hormonal issues and so much more than can be directly tied to an underlying root cause issue in their mouth that has never been considered. Many of the aforementioned issues are "patched up" with drugs, surgeries, and other modalities — even something like red light therapy — that may help stem the tide or provide temporary relief, but not attack the root cause of something like a cavitation, infected root canal, metal dental work in the mouth, an infected jaw bone or leaky gums. The Javid brothers founded their renowned holistic dental practice, Smilebody, in Los Angeles where they have patients that fly in from all over the country because of their impeccable skillset as biological dentists and also because of their unique knowledge base and perspective that allows them to embody a whole-body paradigm versus treating the oral cavity in isolation. Their incorporation of effective, efficacious biohacking modalities also lends their clientele to receiving an unparalleled, comprehensive treatment. If you found the information in today's episode with Dr. Ben & Shawn Javid particularly interesting and/or compelling, please share it with a family member, friend, colleague and/or anyone that you think could benefit and be illuminated by this knowledge. We've been involved in a blind test of 8 different types of zirconia. We've analyzed the optical properties. We've analyzed the strength properties. And ultimately, we've analyzed the results. This has led us to a breakthrough in material discovery, and we are pleased to say we will be making our new PREMIUM ZIRCONIA available for your cases on January 1st. Being in the dental lab business for nearly 50 years, we needed a zirconia that we could be proud of. Our slogan is #TheArtBehindYourSmile so esthetics played a huge role in this discovery. At the same time, strength and reliability are equally as important. An expensive car is of no use to anybody if it's always needing to be fixed or repaired in the shop, and premium restorations are no different. They have to look great AND be reliable to not break. We've discovered a material that finds the perfect equilibrium. A premium material we can use for Anterior Restorations, Full Arch zirconia, 3-4 Unit Posterior Bridges, All on X, and so much more. This is a zirconia that can deliver exceptional results on many of the restorations you and your patients see every day, and will continue to see long into the future. When it comes to choosing the right material for your veneer or crown it can get a little tricky. Lately, it's been a contest between zirconia and lithium disilicate. There are definite clinical indications for each. And the other question is do we bond or use traditional cements. To give his perspective on all this is our guest is Dr. Todd Snyder. Dr Snyder is a popular speaker on Viva Learning.com, a cosmetic dentist, international author, lecturer and consultant to dental companies. This throwback episode features Dr. John Burgess. I heard of his recent passing and thought it would be very appropriate to replay a spectacular interview I was privileged to have with him back in 2022. Do you have advice that you've heard that you use on almost every single procedure? I do. And it came from today's guest, Dr. John Burgess. Dr. Burgess is the assistant Dean for Clinical Research at the University of Alabama at Birmingham as well as Director of the Graduate Biomaterials Program and was recently featured on the main stage at the Spear Summit 2022. But I heard John at the Spring Vedder society meeting some years back and some of the things he said have stayed with me to this day. It was a true pleasure to get to talk with John about what he does, how materials research should be done and how dentists can be better at understanding materials. How does someone get in to biomaterials research? Clinical research at LSU How to find unbiased information...how do we evaluate literature? Is the research measuring what they think it's measuring? Bevels on posterior composites? How do we test this? (spoiler alert: don't bevel occlusal margins) The best material is "abuse tolerant." How do patients get screened for clinical research? NCCLs (noncarious cervical lesions) and the controversy surrounding them New chemistry Read the instructions more often than you think you should! "Dentists don't read" Manufacturers take their instructions very seriously...you should, too. I am a highly experienced holistic dentist with a professional journey spanning over three decades among disciplines and continents. My clinical practice, based in both the U.S. and Europe, encompasses general dentistry, systemic dentistry, cosmetic enhancements, preventive care, and specialized treatments such as amalgam removal, infection treatment, and snoring/sleep apnea interventions. I have had the privilege of leading dental departments, directing operations, creating dental technologies and patents, and overseeing patient care in diverse settings from private practices to specialized medical centers. My commitment to holistic health extends beyond traditional dentistry; I've pursued advanced studies in aesthetic medicine, acupuncture, electro-acupuncture, and other integrative disciplines, furthering my understanding of the interconnectedness of oral health with overall wellbeing. My academic credentials include an MSc in Aesthetic Medicine from Queen Mary University of London, a Doctor of Dental Surgery Degree from the University of the Pacific, School of Dentistry, and a deep foundation in biochemistry from both California State University and UCLA. Mercury fillings and dental infections can have long-term effects on health, including chronic issues and systemic toxicity. Proper preparation and protocols are essential before and after dental procedures to ensure successful outcomes and minimize the risk of complications. Biomimetic dentistry focuses on conserving as much natural tooth structure as possible and using advanced techniques to promote longevity and oral health. Addressing gut health and heavy metal detoxification are crucial aspects of dental care and overall wellness. Cavitations are infections in the jaw that can cause autoimmune issues and other health problems. Improper tooth extractions and other factors can lead to cavitations. Mercury fillings and heavy metal toxicity can contribute to cavitations and other health issues. Detoxification and chelation protocols should be approached with caution and under the guidance of a knowledgeable practitioner. Addressing the physical, energetic, mental, intuitive, and spiritual aspects of healing is important. A 3D cone beam scan is recommended for diagnosing cavitations. Finding a dentist with expertise in whole body dentistry is crucial. 3D scans are essential for identifying cavitations and should be a standard practice in dentistry. Continuing education is crucial for dentists to stay updated on new treatments and technologies. Mineral balancing plays a significant role in overall health and should be considered in patient care. Melatonin can aid in detoxification and improve sleep architecture. Zirconia implants are a better alternative to titanium implants due to their biocompatibility and ability to allow light to pass through. Addressing structural issues before dental procedures is important for long-term success. Collaboration between dentists and chiropractors can enhance treatment outcomes. Most of us have started using zirconia as a material for our indirect restorations. We either mill it chairside or send it out to the lab to be fabricated. Either way we need to make sure that our technique is perfect when delivering it to the tooth, especially if we are working with a non-retentive prep. If we need to rely on adhesion, we have to understand the nuances of bonding zirconia to tooth structure. To tell us all about it is our guest Dr. Alex Vasserman. Dr Vasserman is a respected clinician running his own practice on the Upper East side of Manhattan.
When you want biologically compatible tooth restoration, you can't go wrong with zirconia dental implants. Alan was joined at the Chicago Midwinter by Dr. David Juliani and Heather Garner of Ivoclar to talk about a big roll out of a huge innovation in chairside CAD-CAM Zirconia! Ivoclar introduced Zircad Prime blocks at Midwinter this year and it turns out Dave is one of the beta testers who has used them most extensively! According to Heather the whole roll out was "low key amazing!" It also turns out that Al and Dave have some pretty interesting connections as they grew up in the same home town (Midland, MI) and graduated from the same high school (H.H. Dow High!). Aleksandra Polczynski is an artist. Without even knowing what a dental technician was, she met and married a Master Dental Technician. The lab he worked at offered her a job after looking at some of her drawings. From there a passion and a career was born. She nailed her first few wax ups and was soon a ceramist. After partnering up with companies like GC America (https://www.gc.dental/america/) and Straumann (https://www.straumann.com/us/en/dental-professionals.html), Aleksandra was soon teaching others the art of full arch composite and staining. Wanting to do more, she partnered up with a dentist and opened Visual Dental Arts (https://www.facebook.com/p/Visual-Dental-Arts-100063516994366/) where she gets to work one-on-one with patients to give them the results they want. We are all back from Lab Day and very tired.... but yet we are still all going to the bench because the work never stops. THANK YOU Ivoclar, for hosting us over the weekend! This week we get to meet John Rano. John's dad was a dental technician, so it only made sense that John would end up in the family business. At the age of 14, John started learning what he could. By 18, he was doing conversions. But John wanted more. So after working at another lab and learning even more, John opened Unique Solutions Dental Lab (https://www.uniquesolutionsdentallab.com/). John comes on to talk about his journey, what he learned about providing a positive environment for new employees, and using digital for his full arch workflow. Be sure to come see us in the Ivoclar (https://www.ivoclar.com/en_li) Ballroom during LMT Lab Day Chicago 2024 (https://lmtmag.com/lmtlabday). Register today! Resin 3D printing is going strong in our industry. Almost to the point of not remembering how we functioned without one. Well it's time for the next "phase" of 3D printing. Metal. This week we talk to Josh Williams from GPS Digital RPD (https://gpsdigitalrpd.com/) in Orlando, Florida. Josh runs a 100% digital metal printing facility specializing (as of now) in partial frameworks. He talks about his early days of learning the analog method of making frames, owning his own lab in a bait shop, and partnering up with GPS Dental (https://gpsdental.com/) to take it all digital. Josh also talks about researching the printers, the complete workflow, how they overcame issues, and some of the maintenance these highly fascinating machines take to produce perfect fitting metal frameworks. What we love is that Josh doesn't sell printers or metal. He just uses them every day making frames for only other labs that need a good and reliable solution for their doctors. On today's episode, Dr. Mark Costes is joined by Dr. Dan Briskie and Dr. Taher Dhoon from the Colorado Surgical Institute (CSI) for another enlightening Surgical Saturday. The trio, along with special guests Jamie Levine and Brittany Sherwin from NeoDent, dive into a comprehensive discussion comparing different implant types and protocols, with a spotlight on zirconia implants. The episode kicks off with Dr. Briskie sharing his journey from skepticism to acceptance concerning zirconia implants, attributing the shift to increased patient demand driven by aesthetic preferences and theoretical allergy concerns related to titanium. Brittany Sherwin chimes in on the historical evolution and adoption of zirconia implants, emphasizing NeoDent's innovative two-piece ceramic design tailored for aesthetic and immediate loading protocols. A substantial portion of the discussion is dedicated to contrasting the placement protocols of zirconia and titanium implants, led by Dr. Briskie. He elaborates on the need for a delicate approach when handling zirconia implants to prevent cracking, a common issue attributed to the difference in torque requirements between zirconia and titanium. The discussion navigates through the detailed steps of preparing the osteotomy, the use of bone taps, and the importance of adhering to specified RPM and torque values to ensure the successful placement of zirconia implants. Dr. Dhoon supplements the conversation by sharing his own experiences and the need to unlearn some muscle memory associated with titanium implant placement to accommodate the delicate nature of zirconia. The episode is rich with practical insights, offering listeners a deep dive into the nuanced world of implantology, especially the emerging trend and protocols surrounding zirconia implants. Dr. Briskie and Dr. Dhoon's shared experiences and the information provided by the NeoDent representatives make this episode a valuable resource for dental practitioners keen on staying updated with the evolving landscape of dental implant materials and techniques. Back in September, a group called the DTG (https://www.dentaltechniciansguild.com/) gathered for the first time in a while at the GC America (https://www.gc.dental/america/) facility in Alsip, Illinois. Luckily, we were honored to be a part of this amazing show. There was so many talented technicians in one room, our biggest regret is not getting to talk to all of them. BUT we did get two reluctant people to sit down and share their stories. First up is Shelia Raquel, president of White Peaks Dental Solutions USA (https://whitepeaks-usa.com/). Shelia talks about being a dental assistant in the military, working on the bench, and her new female empowered group called "Queens - Women in the Industry" (https://www.queenswomenintheindustry.com/). Next we sat down with Quint Whipple from Phoenician Dental Studio (https://www.phoeniciandental.com/). Quint talks about wanting to be a dentist, getting wise, working in Las Vegas, how occlusion affects overall health, and the history behind the famous DTG coins. We love dental legacies. When we got contacted by a dental technician that works in a dental office with 3 family members as dentists and another getting ready to graduate dental school, we knew a great story of a busy technician would be there. Dr. Jill Morris and Dr. Burr Bakke own World Class Dentistry (https://sarasotadentist.com/) in Sarasota, Florida dealing in high-end cosmetic work and ceramic implants. They are joined by their son, Dr. Cameron Johnson who specializes in ortho and airway. Both of the younger siblings went to the New York City Tech School of Restorative Dentistry (https://www.citytech.cuny.edu/restorativedentistry/). Sydney Johnson went on to dental school while Kelton Johnson became the in-office (https://sarasotadentist.com/team/higher-aesthetics-laboratory/) technician. For the last three years, we have gone to the Ladies of the Mill (https://www.ladiesofthemill.com/) Summit and recorded a ton of amazing females in our industry. Register for the Ladies of the Mill Summit in Chattanooga, TN on July 21-22 (https://www.ladiesofthemill.com/) Long before this crazy hot summer even started, Ivoclar (https://www.ivoclar.com/en_us) invited Elvis and Barb to set up and record at LMT (https://lmtmag.com/) Lab Day West. As soon as the crowds started, the recording took off and this week we talk to three wonderful people. First up is Amber Rodriguez from Preat (https://www.preat.com/). Amber was speaking for the first time, so of course we talked about that, but we also talk about her going from no implant experience to becoming known for her vast knowledge of implants and attachments and how they handle discontinued implant systems. Then we had the extreme pleasure of meeting two ROCK STARS in our industry. Long before scanners, mills, and printers there were technicians making their own tools for a better workflow and if you do it well enough, someone else will buy it. That is what Robert and Ardith Berger did when they started Belle de St. Claire. With over 500 products and 21 patents, they invented many tools and equipment that became staples in analog dental labs. They reflect on those early days, how they changed the industry, and what they did when it was time to move on. Did you know that not all Zirconia is the same? On August 27th many brave and fearless dental technicians will take to the water and road to participate in the 2023 Chicago Triathlon (https://www.chicagotriathlon.com/). They don't do it for fame or personal gain, but to raise money for the Foundation For Dental Laboratory Technology (https://dentallabfoundation.org/). Register for the Ladies of the Mill Summit in Chattanooga, TN on July 21-22 (https://www.ladiesofthemill.com/) Back in May, Elvis and Barb loaded up the gear and headed out to LMT (https://lmtmag.com/) Lab Day West to record some of the amazing people that attend that show. Thanks to Ivoclar (https://www.ivoclar.com/en_us), a table was set up in the main hall and a constant flow of conversations happened. This week we start off talking with the President of the National Association of Dental Laboratories (https://nadl.org/), Heather Voss. Heather is on a dental lab show tour this year to promote community engagement with the industry. Heather talks about the NADL, some of the great things they are working on, and why a lab should join. Then the man who can fix anything stops by the table, Daniel Serrago, owner of Garland Dental Services (https://garlanddental.com/). Daniel talks about getting into the handpiece repair business, accidentally discovering dental labs, moving his skills to more modern equipment, and some interesting facts he's learned along the way. (https://dentallabfoundation.org/) Ever hear of a Crozat (https://www.instagram.com/daily_crozat/) appliance? We haven't either, but luckily this week we talk to one of the only four technicians that makes these palate expanding devices, Jay Work III. Jay tells the amazing story of stumbling upon a gentleman specializing in these wire devices and after some persistent bugging agreed to teach him. Jay explains what a Crozat is, what it does, and why they are so hard to make. It's a fascinating conversation about a little known appliance that hardly anyone makes but is in high demand. (https://dentallabfoundation.org/) In a time where many are saying the labs are closing or consolidating, here on the podcast we hear about labs owners killing it every week. This episode features a technician that went out to prove to everyone that this industry is still a great profession to find success. Daniel Hassler learned all about dental technology in the Airforce. After his service he traveled to a few states and bettered his skills at a few different labs. Then in October 2022, Daniel opened "Wizards of the Bench" and was a instant success and he's so busy, he's already looking at bring on other technicians. It's a great (and shorter) conversation proving once again that this is a great industry for those wanting a career worth working for. Did you know that not all Zirconia is the same? Brews and Tiny Teeth, The Unfiltered Pediatric Dentistry Podcast
We all know the struggle of placing posterior pre-fabbed zirconia crowns on primary molars. Sometimes they fit like a glove, and sometimes they become a hot dumpster fire where you try 5 different crowns and none of them fit. Dr. Chad Davis, a pediatric dentist out of Arizona, and Dr. Andrew Johnson, a prosthodontist out of Arkansas, have worked together to develop Alphabyte. Alphabyte is a scanning system that allows you to quickly scan a primary molar and determine the correct crown size along with reduction discrepancies via a heat map to improve speed and efficiency with placing posterior crowns. Chad and Andrew come on the podcast to discuss how they developed this system, and how Alphabyte has practical applications beyond zirconia crowns. They will be at AAPD at the Kinder Crown booth where attendees can get a hands-on demo to see how the product works. You can learn more at https://alphabytedental.com/
Open wide everybody – today's episode takes us back into the mighty mouth for a special exploration of all things oral health with my own personal dentists and world class experts in the field, Drs. Stuart M. Nunnelly and Candice Owens. We're reminded of the stark truths about fluoride and modern dentistry before learning all about parasites, deleterious dead teeth, and the many serious risks presented by root canal procedures, the long list of which being the main reason why Drs. Nunnelly and Owens do not currently offer the otherwise widely accepted treatment at their practice here in Texas. But it's not all gloom, doom, and decay in this one. Their holistic approach to dentistry, steeped in the wisdom of two research legends which we give a nod to, is one we can all root for. What's more, we hear a little bit about how and why the psychospiritual realm is so important in this space. In layman's terms, going to the dentist shouldn't be a nightmare. With these two, and others on the right side of the science, it isn't.
