Welcome to the 156th episode of the Tooth or Dare Podcast with Irene Iancu (@toothlife.irene) and this week's guest Dr. Steven Vorholt (@vorholtdds), co-hosted by Dr. Craig Harder.  Starting a dental business from scratch obviously requires a lot of money, time and effort - and then you need patients to actually come to you. But what if you could bring dentistry to your patients instead? That's exactly what Dr. Vorholt decided to do, while still coming home every night to his family. Tune in to hear how he maintains work and life responsibilities using his experiences running a private practice, and reflections on lessons learned from a failed business partnership.  Dr. Steven Vorholt: Dr. Vorholt was born in Cincinnati, Ohio and later moved to Columbus, Ohio to attend college. He graduated with a Doctorate of Dental Surgery from The Ohio State University in 2013. Shortly after graduation, Dr. Vorholt started a private practice in the Columbus area. Immersing himself in as much continuing education as possible, he eventually developed a great passion for dental implant surgery. In 2019 after 6 years of building a successful general practice in Ohio, he followed his passion and moved to Scottsdale, Arizona to take a full time position focusing solely on implant placement and restorations and also worked in dental education. He taught courses such as Basic Implantology, Sinus Grafting, Full Arch Overdentures, Implant Complications, 3D Printing Surgical Guides and more. Dr. Vorholt also helped over 1,000 dentists place over 12,000 implants in his time in live surgery education. In 2021 Dr. Vorholt received his Diplomate in the American Board of Oral Implantology. In 2022 he became a Fellow in the American Academy of Implant Dentistry and was asked to present at the AAID Annual Conference for two different workshops and lectures. He lectures nationally on all topics of dental implants and loves to partake in CE from other great educators whenever given the chance. In late 2022 Dr. Vorholt decided it was time to re-enter private practice. He moved to Santa Barbara California with his family and opened Santa Barbara Dentures and Implants, an implant-focused practice serving the Central Coast of California. According to Dr. Vorholt, continue to invest in yourself and come out stronger. Like many new dentists, he graduated with heavy student debt, but has never let that get in the way of starting a practice and living life the way he wants. Even when things ended with his partner, he switched gears into education, continuously learning and giving back to his peers, teaching other dentists about implant surgery. Tune in to hear about Dr. Vorholt's full journey - and a bonus story about the time Irene thought she was being hit on by a random dude at the bar, with a slide deck containing human ears… Dr. Steven Vorholt: Dr. Vorholt was born in Cincinnati, Ohio and later moved to Columbus, Ohio to attend college. From a simple tooth replacement to a full arch, implants can give a patient back their smile, their function and their confidence. An integral part of today's options for the missing tooth, implants and bone grafting are important to understand and offer. Yet at university, we generally get just an introduction to this critical dental field. So, many of us embark on significant education to learn more and provide more in this field. There are plenty of paths to implant competence however the options can be overwhelming and it is easy to spend a significant amount of money without the results you desire. Dr Dean Licenblat shares his path to implant success and what he recommends to young dentists who want to add implants to their repertoire. After being exposed to implants earlier than most, Dean recognised this is something he could passionately pursue and proceeded to expand his knowledge both here and overseas. This week’s episode is really quite special and something that I personally have never seen been done before. I recorded this week’s interview with Dr. Alex Fibishenko live in the operating room as he was performing an upper and lower arch All on 4 implant procedure. I had the awesome opportunity to retract and suction while performing the interview and the resultant podcast is a true auditory experience. You’ll hear the HR monitor in the background, the suction and handpiece throughout the interview. I spent several hours trying to clean up the loud suction noises as best I could  so I do hope you guys can stick it out and listen to the podcast as Dr. Alex shares a wealth of information. Nonetheless this episode understandably doesn’t have the same sound quality of your typical podcast. This episode will give you the feel of being in theatre standing with us watching the surgery which I doubt you’ll find on any other podcast. Dr Alex Fibishenko practices exclusively in Oral Implantology, Dento-Facial Surgery and Facial Aesthetics. One of Australia’s most respected implant surgeons, innovators and educators, Dr Fibishenko works in a surgical capacity with selected dentists and specialists. He is founder of All-On-4 Clinic and is a Visiting Faculty at the Linhart Continuing Dental Education Program at NYU College of Dentistry. For you Australian listeners, Dr. Alex has kindly offered up 2 spots to his implant residency program running October 21-23. We will be running a contest on Instagram so be sure to check out my Instagram page for more details. This course is valued at almost $9000 and is generally not available to Australian dentists so it is an amazing opportunity to learn from one of Australia’s best implant dentists. He completed his studies in 3 years while finishing with Cum Laude honors and received a scholarship to attend the Number 1 ranked dental school in the nation which was the University of Minnesota at that time.  He found he had a strong interest and ability in dental implants and orthodontics while at the University of Minnesota.  During his studies there he accepted a Health Professional Scholarship from the United States Army where he received advanced training at Tripler Army Medical Center from 1995-1997 on Oahu over a period of 2 years.  He specifically worked side by side with a gifted team of oral surgeons and an orthodontist that ran the US Army residency training program.  After 4 years he graduated from the University of Minnesota with Honors, and in 1997 accepted an officers commission in the Army where he requested his initial duty station to be in Germany.  He was granted his wish and was again allowed to train with a group or oral surgeons, orthodontist, and a board certified prosthodontist.  He continued his advanced training for 2 years in Germany and then moved back to the US where he worked in a clinic in Louisiana with 26 other dentists. Upon completion of his military tour and honorable discharge Dr. Brower moved to the midwest with his wife Peggy and their family to pursue larger family and settle down into private practice.  Dr. Brower's advanced training allows him to perform many procedures that other general dentists have not received the training to perform in office which gives patients great comfort when considering being "referred out" when something needs to be done.  By allowing one practitioner to see all aspects of the same case and not having each piece looked at by someone different over a wide range of times amazing results can be achieved.  In no other way can multiple specialty procedures be combined into one appointment as you can see from the photos of our wonderful patients on the site.   Dr. Brower began restoring and placing implants in 1997 and continues to be heavily involved in the forefront of implant therapy in the U.S.  He has placed and restored over 8,000 dental implants since 1997 and helped develop two independent dental implant lines for manufacturers.  He teaches live surgery courses in his offices with doctors coming from all over the world to see him perform live surgery multiple times per year.     Dr. Brower believes in being a lifelong learner and strives to also teach others whenever possible.   Dr. Brower has received the highest honors possible to achieve and received his diplomate status with the International Academy of Dental Implants, International Congress of Oral Implantology, and the International Academy of Mini Dental Implants.  He holds Fellowship status in the American Academy of Small Diameter Implants, and is a lifetime member of the American Orthodontic Society where he can also be seen as a featured speaker. He maintains active membership in the the American Dental Association, South Dakota Dental Association and dental licenses in good standing in California, Nebraska, and South Dakota.   Dr. Brower is adjunct faculty at the University of South Dakota.  He can be seen at the University of South Dakota Chemistry department website giving a lecture on organic chemistry with Dr. Griforiy Sereda on the pH of saliva and it's effects. Dr. Brower actively helps their organic chemistry department to develop new kinds of dental products to help prevent and restore cavities.   Dr. Brower has lectured and taught dental implantology internationally and been a keynote speaker at the University of California San Diego where he was filmed for international training of other dentists.  His implant videos can be see on the dentinal tubules network which is the largest depository of dental knowledge on the planet.   Dr. Brower is faculty for the International Academy of Dental Implants and a featured keynote speaker in China and England where implant dentistry is fast becoming something every dental practitioner there performs.   He also teaches orthodontics (braces) and publishes/lectures for the American Orthodontic Society, runs dental forums for orthodontics and dental implants, and moderates the conversations of hundreds of dentists every day.   He is an American Dental Association accredited and approved continuing education lecturer, and has continuing education available through www.dentaltown.com which is the world's largest gathering of dentists on the current state of implant prosthetics in the 21st century.   www.SmilesForSiouxland.com
