Welcome to the 165th episode of the Tooth or Dare Podcast with Irene Iancu (@toothlife.irene) and this week's guest Dr. Andi-Jean Miro (@aestheticsbyandi). We return to celebrity dentist Dr. Andi this week to discuss some controversial practices in cosmetic dentistry. Is the rising popularity of over-the-counter dental procedures good or bad? What's the real cost of patients getting their teeth done overseas, attracted by the lower sticker price? How do we manage unrealistic expectations of patients coming from social media platforms where people have “perfect” teeth? Dr. Andi has seen it all, and wants anyone considering cosmetic dentistry to know what's possible and what's too good to be true. You won't want to miss this opportunity to educate yourself and pass on Andi's wisdom to your patients. Dr. Andi graduated from New York University College of Dentistry in 2014 with a focus on Aesthetic Dentistry, followed by a highly regarded Clinical Residency in Brooklyn. For eight years, she refined her skills at working alongside Dr. Mike Apa at Apa Aesthetic in Manhattan on the Upper East Side. Dr. Andi discovered her passion for both practicing and teaching dentistry during this time. In 2019, during the pandemic, Dr. Andi founded STRIBE, an innovative dental education platform created by dentists for dentists, aiming to make top-quality dental education more accessible worldwide. Dr. Andi has a strong commitment to teaching and frequently travels to lecture on cosmetic dentistry. She also holds several academic roles: Assistant Clinical Professor at NYU's Aesthetic Dentistry Department, Clinical Professor at Nova Southeastern University, Residency Masterclass Instructor at STRIBE, Co-Founder and Clinical Instructor for the Art of Ceramic Hands-on Masterclass, and Clinical Instructor and Lecturer for the Rosenthal Institute's Hands-on Aesthetic Advantage program in New York. In 2023, Dr. Andi was invited to join and help lead the team at Apa Aesthetic's LA location. BUFFALO, NY- April 3, 2024 – A new #research paper was #published in Aging (listed by MEDLINE/PubMed as "Aging (Albany NY)" and "Aging-US" by Web of Science) Volume 16, Issue 6, entitled, “Targeting mitochondrial dysfunction using methylene blue or mitoquinone to improve skeletal aging.” Methylene blue (MB) is a well-established antioxidant that has been shown to improve mitochondrial function in both in vitro and in vivo settings. Mitoquinone (MitoQ) is a selective antioxidant that specifically targets mitochondria and effectively reduces the accumulation of reactive oxygen species. In this new study, researchers Sher Bahadur Poudel, Dorra Frikha-Benayed, Ryan R. Ruff, Gozde Yildirim, Manisha Dixit, Ron Korstanje, Laura Robinson, Richard A. Miller, David E. Harrison, John R. Strong, Mitchell B. Schaffler, and Shoshana Yakar from New York University College of Dentistry, City College of New York, The Jackson Laboratory, University of Michigan, South Texas Veterans Health Care System, and The University of Texas Health Science Center investigated the effect of long-term administration of MB or MitoQ on skeletal morphology during the aging process. “[...] we administered MB to aged (18 months old) female C57BL/J6 mice, as well as to adult male and female mice with a genetically diverse background (UM-HET3). Additionally, we used MitoQ as an alternative approach to target mitochondrial oxidative stress during aging in adult female and male UM-HET3 mice.” Although the researchers observed some beneficial effects of MB and MitoQ in vitro, the administration of these compounds in vivo did not alter the progression of age-induced bone loss. Specifically, treating 18-month-old female mice with MB for 6 or 12 months did not have an effect on age-related bone loss. Similarly, long-term treatment with MB from 7 to 22 months or with MitoQ from 4 to 22 months of age did not affect the morphology of cortical bone at the mid-diaphysis of the femur, trabecular bone at the distal-metaphysis of the femur, or trabecular bone at the lumbar vertebra-5 in UM-HET3 mice. “Based on our findings, it appears that long-term treatment with MB or MitoQ alone, as a means to reduce skeletal oxidative stress, is insufficient to inhibit age-associated bone loss. This supports the notion that interventions solely with antioxidants may not provide adequate protection against skeletal aging.” DOI - https://doi.org/10.18632/aging.205147 Corresponding author - Shoshana Yakar - sy1007@nyu.edu Sign up for free Altmetric alerts about this article - https://aging.altmetric.com/details/email_updates?id=10.18632%2Faging.205147 Subscribe for free publication alerts from Aging - https://www.aging-us.com/subscribe-to-toc-alerts About Aging-US Aging publishes research papers in all fields of aging research including but not limited, aging from yeast to mammals, cellular senescence, age-related diseases such as cancer and Alzheimer's diseases and their prevention and treatment, anti-aging strategies and drug development and especially the role of signal transduction pathways such as mTOR in aging and potential approaches to modulate these signaling pathways to extend lifespan. Today we're talking research! But don't "change the channel" — you're going to find this both fascinating and easy to digest. In this conversation with Eleanor Stevenson, PhD, RN, FAAN, Ruby and Anne talk about the science behind fertility and why it's so important to patient safety and outcomes to keep up with the science. Some questions they tackle include: How is research conducted? How does data inform treatment? What are researchers looking for? How do they ensure the results are accurate? One special area of focus for Dr. Stevenson is stress and its effects on fertility. There's no question that the fertility journey can be very stressful for those with unexpected challenges: how does that stress impact the journey? What lingering effects might there be, even if treatment is successful? Another area of focus is the experience of those who identify as cis-heterosexual men in fertility. Men are often left out of the process in many ways, but what happens when there's a challenge with male-factor fertility (eg low sperm count)? Eleanor Stevenson, PhD, RN, FAAN, is a Clinical Professor of Nursing at Duke University School of Nursing. She received her BS in Nursing from Rutgers University College of Nursing–New Brunswick, and her MS as a Women's Health Nurse Practitioner from Rutgers University College of Nursing–Newark. She received her PhD in Nursing Research and Theory Development from New York University College of Nursing. Her area of inquiry focuses on the multidimensional psychological stress women who have conceived pregnancies via in-vitro fertilization experience as well as the adaptive behaviors of men with male-factor infertility. She is also engaged in inquiry about how men can increase access to primary care via female-facing care models such as infertility treatment and family planning. Dr. Stevenson's clinical career has focused on women's health issues including clinical practice in various settings such as high-risk labor and delivery, mother-baby, antepartum, family planning, and infertility services. Dr. Stevenson has also applied her clinical expertise in research and development of women's health and infertility medications. In this episode Dr. Karen Raphael shares her research on the areas of psychological comorbidities in chronic pain, the relationship of sleep bruxism and temporomandibular disorders as well as the use of botulinum toxin in the management of orofacial pain conditions. Dr. Karen Raphael is a PhD-level psychologist and epidemiologist whose work over the last 35 years has focused on the role of psychosocial and stress-related factors in medically unexplained pain. As she was completing postdoctoral training in psychiatric epidemiology at Columbia University, she met Dr. Joseph Marbach, an orofacial pain specialist and renowned clinical researcher. Most of their close collaboration for a dozen years until his passing in 2001 involved studying processes underlying chronic temporomandibular disorders. After serving on faculty at Columbia University (in Public Health, Psychiatry and the Dental School), she continued research on orofacial pain and other forms of medically unexplained pain at Rutgers/Newark Medical and Dental Schools, where she was promoted to Professor. Her work broadened to encompass areas ranging from translational pain psychophysics to pain epidemiology. She continued methodologically-driven work on biases in both patient reporting and clinical observation. Since 2009, Dr. Raphael has held a primary appointment at New York University College of Dentistry, serving as Professor in the Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology, Radiology and Medicine. Her research on stress and muscle activity expanded to include use of polysomnographic studies and awake stress-reactivity studies to examine the role of bruxism in temporomandibular disorders. Dr. Raphael's writings inspired an international consensus committee of orofacial pain experts to reconsider whether bruxism is a disorder requiring treatment. In addition to serving as Principal Investigator on a dozen grants funded primarily by the NIH, Dr. Raphael has published approximately 100 peer-reviewed manuscripts and has served on numerous editorial boards and grant review committees. Her most recent funded research has examined potential bone-related risk from use of Botulinum Toxin to treat temporomandibular disorders.
