EPISODE 29 DETAILS TYSON NOT SURE ON BEEF HERD RECOVERY AS CHALLENGES LOOM.   Tyson Foods Inc. officials said they do not have a prediction on when U.S. ranchers will begin rebuilding the nation's cattle herd after high feed costs and drought in 2023 prompted suppliers to reduce the number of cattle for slaughter. The moves resulted in tighter supplies and increased the amount Tyson pays for livestock, in addition to sending the processor's beef segment to an adjusted operating loss of $34 million in the second quarter and a loss of $151 million for the first six months of the fiscal year. Tyson earlier this month projected an operating loss of between $40 million and $100 million for its beef business for all of fiscal 2024 in the wake of an anticipated 2% decrease in domestic beef production this year from fiscal 2023. SCIENTISTS FIND H5N1 AVIAN FLU VIRUS IN WASTEWATER ACROSS TEXAS.   Researchers are reporting that they confirmed the presence of the virus that causes avian influenza in wastewater recently monitored in nine of 10 Texas cities. A team of scientists from Baylor College of Medicine and the University of Texas Health Sciences Center announced the findings as part of an investigation of recent H5N1 outbreaks in cattle and ferrets in recent months. Scientists are trying to determine how the H5N1 virus is spreading to dairy cows and are increasingly considering wastewater sampling programs as a main surveillance tool, according to a report on the findings from the Center for Infectious Disease Research & Policy (CIDRAP) at the University of Minnesota. GUEST OVERVIEW: Dr. Berdine graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1974 earning a B.S. degrees in Chemistry and a second B.S. degree in Life Sciences. He graduated from Harvard School of Medicine in 1978 earning the M.D. degree. Specialty training in Internal Medicine and subspecialty training in Pulmonary Diseases was at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston. Dr. Berdine found the taxation in Massachusetts to be oppressive, so in 1984 he moved to the relatively free environment of Texas where he has remained since. Dr. Berdine was on the faculty at University of Texas Health Sciences Center in San Antonio doing research in basic respiratory gas exchange physiology and teaching students in the medical arts until 1989 when capricious and arbitrary rule by federal bureaucrats drove him into the entrepreneurial realm of private practice. Dr. Berdine left private practice in 2009 due to declining health and resumed academic medicine at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Lubbock where he remains today. In addition to direct patient care and teaching of medical students, Dr. Berdine writes about the virtues of the free market in solving health care problems as well as the hazards of letting government make a mess of things. The recent COVID pandemic with authoritarian lockdowns, mandates of inadequately tested vaccines, and barbaric isolation of patients from family have provided numerous examples of letting government make a mess of things. He is an affiliate of the Free Market Institute at Texas Tech University. His commentary and analyses can be found at Southwest Respiratory and Critical Care Chronicles, Mises.org, and AIER. His latest commentary includes criticism of isolating patients from family, explaining physician burnout as a form of rent dissipation, a critical examination of excess deaths during COVID, and the very real hazards of COVID vaccines.

For the final episode of our NASA series we're welcoming Judy Hayes, Chief Science Officer for NASA's Human Health and Performance Directorate. She joined Johnson Space Center (JSC) in 1984 as a research scientist in the Neurosciences Laboratory and established the JSC Exercise Physiology Laboratory in 1987. She was principle investigator on two Space Shuttle experiments studying the effects of microgravity on skeletal muscle performance in astronauts. During her career she managed the physiology laboratories, Reduced Gravity Programs, Space Medicine Project, and integration of biomedical research for the Space Shuttle, Russian Mir-Shuttle, and International Space Station programs. In addition to JSC, she managed NASA laboratories at the Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center in Star City, Russia. Judy earned a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Exercise Physiology from West Virginia University followed by a Master of Public Health degree in Occupational Health/Aerospace Medicine from the University of Texas Health Sciences Center. She completed a joint fellowship at The Royal College of Surgeons of England and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine supporting epidemiologic research in the development of clinical practice guidelines for the National Health Service in the United Kingdom. She has been awarded the NASA Silver Snoopy and WVU Outstanding Alumnus. She was inducted into the WVU Hall of Fame and the WVU Academy of Distinguished Alumni. The wealth of experience that Judy brings made this a great conversation about many of biggest physiological challenges that NASA faces trying to keep humans healthy during long duration space missions. Some of the topics we discussed were how NASA simulates space for research here on earth (everything from parabolic flight to underwater labs to long term isolation experiments), how they're adjusting their protocols for planned missions to the moon and Mars, and how they select and develop equipment solutions for use in space. A new research paper was published in Aging (listed as "Aging (Albany NY)" by Medline/PubMed and "Aging-US" by Web of Science) Volume 14, Issue 17, entitled, “Aging, prevalence and risk factors of MRI-visible enlarged perivascular spaces.” Cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) increases with age and is associated with stroke and cognitive decline. Enlarged Perivascular Spaces (ePVS) is an emerging marker of CSVD, but its prevalence over the life span remains unclear. In a new study, researchers Frances Rodriguez Lara, Ashlea Lynn Scruton, Adlin Pinheiro, Serkalem Demissie, Pedram Parva, Andreas Charidimou, Michael Francis, Jayandra J. Himali, Charles DeCarli, Alexa Beiser, Sudha Seshadri, and Jose R. Romero from Boston University School of Medicine, Boston University School of Public Health, NHLBI's Framingham Heart Study, Veterans Affairs Boston Health System, University of Texas Health Sciences Center, and University of California at Davis characterized the age and sex-specific prevalence of ePVS and its relation to age-specific risk factors in a large community-based sample. “In this report we aim to describe 1) the age and sex specific prevalence of ePVS in a large sample of asymptomatic, community dwelling individuals, and contrast ePVS prevalence with the prevalence of vascular risk factors in the same age groups, and 2) study the association of vascular risk factors with burden of ePVS by brain region. This knowledge will help support the increasing number of studies of ePVS as a biomarker of aging and age related adverse neurological outcomes.” Full Press Release - https://aging-us.net/2022/09/22/aging-aging-prevalence-and-risk-factors-of-mri-visible-enlarged-perivascular-spaces/ DOI: https://doi.org/10.18632/aging.204181 Corresponding Author: Jose R. It's a perfect dovetail episode after our Dr. Scott Bruder episode on the FDA Consumer alert on orthobiologics. We discuss further what you can/can't do in orthobiologics and discuss an innovation in pre-market approval. Jim Kovach is MD, JD, Executive Director, Translational Entrepreneurship, UC Davis School of Medicine, where he supports physician training in entrepreneurship; and industry outreach to support translational science. He identifies products that are consistent in formulation and can developed, scaled and distributed to help solve challenges in medicine. Dr. Kovach received his medical degree with distinction from the University of Kentucky while simultaneously playing in the National Football League. Dr. Kovach played 7 years in the National Football League as a middle linebacker for the New Orleans Saints and San Francisco 49ers. Dr. Jaime R. A former college football player before entering medical school, Dr. Garza has served as team or tournament physician for several college and professional teams including the NFL's New Orleans Saints and the and U.S. Olympic track and field team. Topics include: -We hear about their involvement in pivotal investigational device exemption (IDE) studies with GID BIO, Inc.. An IDE allows an investigational device to be used in a clinical study to obtain pre-market approval (PME) for class III medical devices. The first study was a safety and feasibility study with the second being a double blind placebo controlled trial at three sites. Tune-in to hear about the technology and the goals of the study outcomes. -Both are college football and NFL alumni with a passion to educate former players and facilitate outreach to industry. A decade ago, Dr. Garza received emails from NFL alumni about “great stem cell treatments available for free," yet it wasn't legitimate.  He has since educated alumni and physicians on how they were being targeted and how to protect the NFL Alumni name. It was a significant organizational wake-up call and is now headed in the right direction with the establishment of NFL Alumni Healthcare Committee, for which Dr. Kovach and Dr. Garza serve as senior medical advisors.
