Dentistry is hard. We can only give so much of ourselves and we can only be compassionate to our patients for so long. Neodiamonds from Microcopy Dental are very fine. I mean, all of them are awesome, but some of them are actually “very fine.” Specifically I mean the yellow striped ones they call “finishing” diamonds. I use Microcopy finishing diamonds on just about any patient that I might be spinning a bur on. Very fine finishers do the heavy lifting on composites so polishing is simple and easy. I use them to finish crown preps. I've been known to adjust Emax and Zirconia with them. Once you try them you're going to find a ton of places to use them! And just like all of Microcopy's burs, they're sterile out of the package and single use means they're sharp and efficient and can be disposed of at the end of the appointment! Go check them out at verydentalpodcast.com/veryfine (all one word)! The Very Dental podcast is also supported by our friends at Cosmedent! Cosmedent has just released a new composite that you're going to want to try! It's called “Renamel Bulkfill” and it's here to simplify your posterior composite placement. It rivals the speed and efficiency of amalgam but it's still packable, sculptable and polishes like a dream! You can cure up to 4mm increments, so it's sure to increase the efficiency of working in the posterior. It's radiopaque for easy identification on recalls, too! I'll get a chance to try it clinically next week and I'll give you my review with photos in the Very Dental Facebook group! This week we are joined by an accomplished dentist and father of Teen Mom star Chelsea Houska, Dr. Randy ‘PapaRandilicious’ Houska! Stay tuned for his extra special and heart-rending Tooth or Dare at the end of the episode. Big thanks to our sponsors at Dentsply Sirona for this amazing episode and encouraging Irene to get a ProphyJet, she is absolutely obsessed and can not go without using it on nearly every patient. If you want your perio life to be changed, DM Irene so she can rant a bit about how much love she has for this piece of equipment! A self-described Farm Boy, Randy Houska never had dreams of being a dentist. Growing up in the small town of Mitchell, South Dakota (home of the world’s only corn palace!), Dr. Houska knew he wanted to leave farm life behind and found his way into dental school at the University of Nebraska. Randy tells the saga of Chelsea’s pregnancy at 16 and her subsequent journey into filming MTV’s “16 and Pregnant” and then “Teen Mom.” emotional growth that came from the show. He talks about the difficulty of being online as an MTV celebrity and swears that, of all social media, Reddit is by far the worst. Dr. Houska shares information about his work with Implant Pathway and The New Horizon Dental Clinic in Tempe, Arizona where low-income families can receive high-quality healthcare at the lowest possible cost and new dentists can practice dental surgery. As an MTV star, a father, and a widely experienced dentist, Randy Houska and answers our burning questions: Is Teen Mom scripted? What advice would you give to a teenage mom? As a dentist, how do you approach a patient you suspect might be experiencing abuse at home? Do dads roll into your DM's? Who's your favourite Canadian?  “You’ve gotta love yourself before you go lookin’ for another man” -Randy Houska   Bio: Dr. Randy Houska was raised in Mitchell, SD on a small farm and received a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Biology at the University of South Dakota. He received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Nebraska Medical Center, College of Dentistry in 1989. His post-graduate plans took him to Vermillion, SD, where he has had a private practice since then. After 25 years of private practice, he found a new love of dentistry focusing on implant dentistry. He can be found several times per year at implant focused on continuing education events. Professional organizations that he is a member of include: American Dental Association, South Dakota Dental Association, Academy of General Dentistry, American Academy of Implant Dentistry, International Congress of Oral Implantologists. Dr. Moody is also an international speaker and he builds strong mentorships with doctors who take his courses through live surgical training at the end of their Implant Pathway continuum.  In today’s episode, we discuss different topics including what he’s been doing during this pandemic and his plans moving forward. We also talk about the Implant Pathway and how we can use this downtime to learn more about implants.  Justin specifically brings up the issue we’re facing right now where dentists are viewed as nonessential, and even “dangerous,” at this time of the pandemic – when we could have become force multipliers in the healthcare system. He makes a valid point about how dentists should really be regarded as specialists in our field in the same way that MDs are in their respective specialties.  In this episode, you’ll hear: ADA’s lack of support for dental care providers How to manage our practice from a business standpoint The hurdles and impediments to the dental implant industry  Realizations gleaned from this COVID-19 situation    Connect with Dr. Justin Moody: Dr. Justin Moody Dr. Justin Moody IG Dr. Justin Moody FB Dr. Justin Moody Twitter Dentists, Implants, and Worms Podcast Implant Pathway Implant Pathway FB Implant Pathway Youtube Channel Implant Pathway IG Voices of Dentistry   Connect with Russell: Dr. Russell Kirk Business of Dentistry Podcast Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/businessofdentistrypodcast/ IG - https://www.instagram.com/businessofdentistry/ Twitter - https://twitter.com/businessdentist LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/business-of-dentistry/   *** EPISODE CREDITS: If you like this podcast and are thinking of creating your own, consider talking to my producer, Danny Ozment. Let’s talk about dental implant continuing education for the general dentist! I’m often asked what the best courses are for a general dentist to learn implantology. The short answer is to take all of the courses you can, but the longer answer depends on other things including what you already know, your current abilities, and the current state of your practice. The rules of the marketplace have fundamentally shifted, and the gatekeepers aren’t as powerful as they used to be. Now, anyone can break into implantology if it’s something they want enough. And now that this shift has happened, the biggest obstacle to your success is in your head. It’s time to get past that and write your own story! Now let’s get into specific. My recommendation for a general dentist getting into implantology is to take multiple paths over a long period of time. A specific suggestion that I highly recommend on the business side is my own Dental Implant MBA program. You’ll learn how to develop, market, and master your implant practice through this series of courses. (Also, check out my mini-course on dental implant funnel marketing.) If you’re not sure whether implant dentistry is something you’re interested in, try a short weekend course. I recommend Glidewell Dental’s Restorative Driven Implant Solutions Utilizing the Latest Technology course, or Implant Dentistry 101 from Implant Direct. Both of these are great introductory courses for implantology. Once you’re ready for a comprehensive course with implant training, I recommend Implant Pathway. This takes a big amount of material and delivers it within a shorter, more consumable package. I believe it’s the best implant training that there is for beginners! For a longer, in-depth course and credentialing with the AAID, I highly recommend a MaxiCourse. If you want something that’s all online, look into DentalXP's Online Implant Fellowship Program. It’s a challenging, rigorous course that will leave you top-level implantology knowledge. That’s a lot of suggestions, and there are a lot more courses. I hope this episode has helped give you a place to start! If you need advice or opinions on these or other courses, please feel free to reach out to me directly.   In This Episode: [00:13] - Philip welcomes listeners back to the show, and explains that this episode will be about dental implant continuing education for the general dentist. [01:03] - We hear about the importance of creating a different story if what you’re doing now isn’t working. [01:55] - The rules have fundamentally shifted in a way that lets anyone break into implantology, Philip explains. [03:01] - Philip shares an inspirational story, and explains how it applies to the dental industry. [04:37] - We get into CE courses for implantology for the general dentist, with Philip offering his recommendations. [05:51] - Philip offers two recommendations for short courses to figure out whether implant dentistry is right for you: Restorative Driven Implant Solutions Utilizing the Latest Technology or Implant Dentistry 101. [06:27] - We hear Philip’s recommendation for the next course once you decide that implant dentistry is something you want to pursue: Implant Pathway. [07:27] - Philip recommends the AAID MaxiCourse for a longer, more in-depth course into dental implantology. [08:21] - For a comprehensive, all-online course, try the Online Implant Fellowship Program from DentalXP. [09:09] - There are tons of other courses that there isn’t time to dig into, Philip explains. The ones he has recommended, though, are the basics that will get you started.   Links and Resources: Hernán Cortés Dental Implant MBA Restorative Driven Implant Solutions Utilizing the Latest Technology from Glidewell Dental Implant Dentistry 101 from Implant Direct Implant Pathway AAID AAID MaxiCourse DentalXP's Online Implant Fellowship Program
