When patients say "I'll go home and think about it," dentists default to "they don't value the dentistry" or "they can't afford it." David's argument: the most common reason is that you didn't build trust or form a connection. People will spend $20,000 on a European vacation but not on asymptomatic dental work — that's a comparison about trust and felt need, not budget. Connection is a long game, not a five-minute pitch. New dentists try to close trust in a single appointment. David's reframe: you'll see this patient over years. Foster the relationship as long as it takes, and they will do the treatment — maybe not all at once, but eventually. The "I'm the doctor, you're the patient" model breaks in fee-for-service. Patients in a fee-for-service practice are decision-makers, not compliant subjects. You have to meet them as one. Design the room around the conversation. For any case over roughly $1,500, David moves the patient to a dedicated consultation room and sits side-by-side at a table — not across the operatory chair. He pays attention to where he's seated relative to the patient and the door. He has even recorded his own case presentations on camera and had them coached. The Chamber of Commerce is one of the most underused networking moves in dentistry. Every city has one. Dues are minimal or free. You get a room full of local entrepreneurs — publishers, contractors, surgeons, service providers — solving the same problems you are, just in different industries. When David launched his practice from scratch, the Chamber funded part of his open house, ran his ribbon-cutting, and brought a crowd. Get your CE ROI right. Start with skills that pay dividends immediately — molar endo, ridge preservation/socket grafting. They have low downside (a missed socket graft is no worse than not grafting at all), short learning curves, and you'll actually use them weekly. "Sexy" CE without immediate clinical application sits unused. Keep ridge preservation simple. Don't get lost in the 70/30 vs. 50/50 mineralized/demineralized debate. David teaches just two categories: mineralized cortical bone, or mineralized cortical-cancellous bone. That's it. For membranes, beginners should default to a long-lasting resorbable collagen membrane. The fancier options (cross-linked, titanium-reinforced, amnion-chorion, PTFE) are handling-skill problems before they're outcome problems. Case presentation isn't about "salesy words." It's about reading non-verbal cues, responding appropriately, and conducting the conversation — not delivering the right script. Notable Quotes "It's not necessarily just because they don't want it. Dr. George J Schmidt is an OKU graduate of the UMDNJ-NJ Dental School where he received his DMD degree. He is a Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry and the International Congress of Oral Implantologists. In addition to maintaining a highly successful private practice in Northern New Jersey, Dr.Schmidt holds appointments at two local Universities. He is an Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Diagnostic Sciences at Rutgers School of Dental Medicine and is an Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor at NYU College of Dentistry where he serves as the surgical director of the Wednesday CDE implant program. He has great interest and experience in intraoral bone grafts and placement of dental implants. As the founder of the Northwest Indiana Dental Implant Study Club he has been a leader in the area of dental implants for many years. He maintains two Spear Study clubs as well. The use of Nitrous Oxide and IV anesthetics in the office to allow for maximum patient comfort is a big part of his practice. Dr. Platt currently resides in Munster with his wife Bobbie.

Born in Montreal, Canada, Dr. Jonathan Abenaim DMD is the owner of Jonathan Dental Spa. He received a BA in Biology from Yeshiva University in New York, and continued his graduate work at University of Pennsylvania. UPenn is one of the only 3 Ivy Leagues to provide a Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry. Dr. Abenaim graduated with a DMD with disciplines in Endodontics, Prosthetic Dentistry, and Pain Management. In addition to graduating with honors, Dr. Abenaim also received the E. Howell Smith Award in Prosthetic Dentistry. Always staying current and progressive, Dr. Abenaim has continued his education with a Advanced Implant Prosthodontics Residency at Nova Southeastern University and Atlantic Coast Dental Research Clinic in Palm Beach Florida. Caroline is extremely talented, having graduated in the top of her class at UT's business school. Right now it's just the two of us at home, but you never know what the future holds! When we're not working, you'll often find Caroline and me walking at Radnor Lake or cooking an amazing meal. On weekends, we're either wake boarding and waterskiing with friends and family or heading to Knoxville to cheer on the Volunteers! Personally, I'm committed to my relationship to Jesus Christ and thankful for all I have been given through him. He is the rock in my life, my family, and my hobbies."
This was an interesting one. We had the honor of having Dr. Brian Prouty join us in-studio... all the way from small-town Watertown, South Dakota! We discussed everything from sedation dentistry to people's irrational fears of dentists (a fairly common hurdle for the dental professional to jump over). Dr. Prouty DDS DICOI PC was born and raised in South Dakota. He is a biology/chemistry graduate from SDSU. Completed dental studies at Marquette University School of Dentistry in 2004. Implant training at the Medical College of Georgia School AAID Implant program in 2006. Completed intravenous sedation training at the Medical College of Georgia. Graduate of both the surgical, as well as the prosthetic programs of Misch International Institute. Episode #2 of Dentists, Implants and Worms: We had the honor of interviewing one of Dr. Justin Moody's closest mentors and colleagues in his career, Dr. Danny Domingue, DDS. Dr. Daniel Domingue was born and raised in Lafayette, LA. He graduated from St. Thomas More in 1999 and went on to receive his Bachelor of Science degree from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge and his DDS degree from the LSU School of Dentistry in New Orleans. While spending three years in advanced training at Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center in New York City, he served as Chief Resident of the Dental and Oral Surgery Department. His training included one year in Advanced General Dentistry and two years in Dental Implantology. During these years, he was awarded the Certificate of Achievement from the American Academy of Implant Dentistry for outstanding leadership in Implant Dentistry, a Fellowship from the International Congress of Oral Implantologists, and an Associate Fellowship of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry. Dr. Domingue was also awarded Diplomate from the American Board of Oral Implantology, the highest award possible for a general dentist practicing implantology. He was also recognized as the youngest recipient of this award in the entire world. Dr. Domingue was later given a Mastership and Diplomate award from the International Congress of Oral Implantology for his outstanding work in Implant Dentistry. Dr. Domingue is a member of the American Dental Association as well as the Acadiana District Dental Association. He is also an active member of the American Academy of General Dentistry. After completing his residency program, Dr. Domingue married the love of his life, Megan, in Denver, CO. They decided to move back to Louisiana to settle down, practice dentistry, and raise their family. On August 2nd, 2012, he and Megan were blessed with their first-born baby girl, Elle Ann Domingue. After practicing for three years in Lake Charles, Dr. Domingue accepted an offer from his uncle, Dr. Smith, to become a partner in his practice. This proved to be a great opportunity for he and his family to move back home as well as to join his uncle's practice and carry on a tradition established more than 30 years ago.
