The Fig & Farm (at home) - Design Happy Living podcast is an absolute must-listen for anyone interested in decorating and design on a budget. Dani, the host, brings a refreshing perspective to the world of interior design, offering practical tips and tricks that can easily be implemented in any home. I had the pleasure of working for an interior designer for 2.5 years, but Dani's advice goes above and beyond what I learned during that time. Her show is filled with valuable information that will make your home look and feel amazing without breaking the bank.

One of the best aspects of this podcast is Dani's ability to make interior design accessible to everyone. She understands that not everyone has a personal carpenter or a luxury budget, and she ensures that her tips are realistic and achievable for people of all backgrounds. Her infectious enthusiasm and joy-filled laugh create a welcoming atmosphere, making it easy to learn from her episodes. Additionally, Dani emphasizes the importance of allowing yourself time and grace when decorating your home, reminding listeners that there's no rush to have a picture-perfect space.

If there was one drawback to this podcast, it would be that some episodes may not cater to individuals who are already well-versed in interior design concepts. While Dani does provide practical tips for beginners, those with more advanced knowledge may find themselves wanting more in-depth discussions or innovative ideas. However, for anyone looking to gain foundational knowledge or seek inspiration for their home decor journey, The Fig & Farm (at home) - Design Happy Living podcast is still an excellent resource.

In conclusion, I wholeheartedly recommend The Fig & Farm (at home) - Design Happy Living podcast to anyone interested in making their home feel cozy and inviting on a budget. Dani's expertise shines through each episode as she provides actionable advice while maintaining an encouraging tone throughout. Whether you're a beginner or have experience in interior design, this podcast offers valuable insights into creating a space that truly reflects you and your loved ones. Don't miss out on the opportunity to learn from Dani's expertise and delightful personality.

Hey friend, If you love the charm of traditional farmhouse style but crave something a little more elevated and fresh, farmcore might be exactly what your home needs. In this episode, I'm introducing you to a trending home decor style that blends the coziness of cottagecore (remember episode 15?) with the classic appeal of farmhouse design—creating a richer, more layered aesthetic that's as timeless as it is on-trend. I'll walk you through: ✨ What farmcore is and how it differs from traditional farmhouse decor ✨ Why it's not just another rustic trend ✨ How to confidently incorporate farmcore into your own home—even if you're decorating on a budget Here's how to bring farmcore into your space: Wall Treatments – Think shiplap (yes, it's still in!), beadboard, and board and batten to add depth and visual interest. Layered Textures – Cozy it up with wallpaper, window treatments, throw pillows, blankets, and area rugs. Traditional Silhouettes – Choose quality furniture with classic lines like wingback chairs and rolled arms. Antique Pieces – Mix in vintage or antique furnishings for a curated, lived-in look. Rustic Elements – Raw woods, stoneware, and iron accents help ground the space. Natural Materials – Lean into wood, linen, cotton, and clay for an organic feel. Pattern Mixing – Don't be afraid to pair florals with plaids or stripes—step outside the design box! Moody Earth Tones – Create a rich foundation with colors inspired by nature—think deep greens, browns, and terracotta. Farmcore brings nostalgia and warmth with a modern, curated twist. You don't have to live in the country to love this style—and you definitely don't need a big budget. xo, dani   // Links mentioned in show: // Become a Design Bestie by joining the newsletter: https://bit.ly/designbestie Email: hello@figandfarmathome.com Website: https://figandfarmathome.com Join The Collective (monthly membership): https://www.figandfarmathome.com/thecollective Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/figandfarm/ FREE Facebook Community: https://www.bit.ly/design101group

Hey friend! Did you know that multiple studies have shown a direct correlation between a cluttered environment and elevated levels of cortisol — our body's primary stress hormone? When our surroundings are messy or chaotic, our brain perceives it as “unfinished business,” which keeps us in a state of stress. So even if you're not consciously thinking, "Ugh, this clutter is stressing me out," your body is. And it's responding by keeping you in a low-grade stress mode — making it harder to focus, sleep, or even relax. But let's think beyond cortisol for a second. Clutter also impacts: Your energy: It's mentally draining. Your relationships: It can lead to arguments or embarrassment about inviting people over. Your productivity: Visual distractions make it harder to concentrate. Your confidence: A cluttered home can make you feel like you're "failing" at adulting — even though you're absolutely not. Hey friend!   Sometimes we are in different seasons of decorating. Sometimes we're in an active sprint - actively painting, re-tiling or choosing large pieces of furniture before a specific deadline. Other times we're at a much slower pace - absorbing information and gathering inspiration, while simultaneously making a plan. But then there's the third place you could be in and if truth be told, this one is the one that stops most people from ever taking a step forward...and that's a place of stuckness. There are many reasons why you might be stuck. Sometimes it's being so overwhelmed by choices that you fear making a poor one. Other times there's a feeling of frustration at not knowing where to start. No matter the reason - if I just described you, this episode is for you. 5 simple routines to follow when you're constantly stuck in the place of not knowing where to start or feeling like there's too much to do: 1. The 10 minute edit:  Allowing yourself to see your home in a new perspective with less visual clutter can be a helpful starting place that allows you to see the potential. 2. Snapshots of problem areas: This may sound counter intuitive, but take a picture of an area in your home that you can't stand. Look at it through the lens for a fresh perspective and journal about what you see and why it's problematic. 3. The ONE thing rule: Focusing on one aligned step is much better than five rushed ones. 4. Learn your style: Always a top priority and the foundation for creating a home you love. Use Pinterest, Google or good old fashioned magazines to start recognizing common elements that you are attracted to. 5. Make a plan: Set your home goals then work backward, crafting small steps that will help you achieve those goals.   Shhh!!! Want to know a SECRET? fig & farm (at home) is having a SALE!!!! Hey friend! Have you ever wondered how designers get scale and proportion 'just right?' Or you've thought - they were born with great spatial awareness so they must be innately good at seeing a room and feeling if it's 'off' or 'perfect.' The real design secret: it comes down to math!   In today's episode I'm sharing a bit of history about the ancient, from nature, math sequence that inspires many industries, home design included. The Fibonnaci Sequence is a sequence of numbers that when added together create perfect scale and proportion. When used in home decorating, that scale and proportion is the heart of making a room look cohesive, put together and aesthetically pleasing!   The ratio is SO IMPORTANT it is known in the design world as THE GOLDEN RATIO, thus making each 'rule' it applies to The Golden Rule of x (choosing an area rug, choosing a paint palette, choosing the correct size for a coffee table, etc). What is that ratio. 40:60. Enjoy today's conversation where I share 5 rules that you can use this golden ratio for when decorating your home. Hey friend! Are you sick and tired of stuff making the decisions around your home? "Where should we eat dinner?" (says STUFF all over the dining table) "No space here to play the game." (says STUFF all over the coffee table) "Spend more money on groceries." (says STUFF that engulfed all your grocery coupons and now you can't find them) STUFF rules the day in too many ways and it's time to take your homes back - creating spaces that function the way you want them to function so you can live the way you want to live. In today's episode I'm answering Ann's question who wants to know simple ways to declutter because she's ready to a) live more simply b) create a home that's charming and decluttered homes aren't charming and c) invest more in her space so she can love it...and she hates the overwhelm and clutter. Are you suffering from decluttering overwhelm too? 3 EASY TIPS TO REDUCE THE OVERWHELMING TASK OF DECLUTTERING 1. Know your WHY! Stay connected to the goal at the end of the hard chore. Writing down your why and keeping it visible will help you get through the slog when it gets tough. 2. Start small: Small can mean amount of time, room size or container within a larger room (ie. the room = kitchen, starting with the smallest container - a drawer and moving up in size with each successfully decluttered drawer, then cupboard, etc.). 3. Game-ify the task: Give yourself a reward for a completed task. Give yourself a goal. Set your goals in alignment with the calendar dates (ie. April 1 - declutter 1 item, April 10 - declutter 10 items, April 28 - 28 items...by the end of a 31 day month you'll have decluttered 496 items).   Better Than Basics Bootcamp April 29 - May 1 9am PST | 10 am MST | 11am CST | 12pm EST ...................................... Hey friend! I love Amazon just as much as the next guy, but sometime the "I want it yesterday" mentality can distract us from the goals we have for decorating a more cohesive, unified looking home. In today's episode I'm teaching you about the concept of SLOW DECORATING - what it is, why it's beneficial and how to do it. HINT...if you haven't yet registered for the Better Than Basics Bootcamp and you are wanting to decorate with intention in your home, you're going to want to save your seat before they fill up. You register at: Better Than Basics Bootcamp What is slow decorating: mindfully choosing items for your home instead of the quick push to finish a room fast. What are the benefits: less pressure, more time for budgeting, trend-proof styling and the ability to embrace different 'styles' because you are in more alignment with your personal aesthetic. How to decorate slowly: know your aesthetic, how your room needs to function and the ways your home is looking or lacking cohesiveness (I teach all of this in the Better Than Basics Bootcamp); know where your products are being made and the quality; honoring your budget by making intentional choices; shop local, handmade, flea markets, antique stores; be prepared to be surprised.   Better Than Basics Bootcamp April 29 - May 1 9am PST | 10 am MST | 11am CST | 12pm EST ...................................... 329 // Which items should I spurge on and which items can I save more when choosing my home decor or furnishings?

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 8, 2025 14:26

Hey friend! Do you ever wonder which items you should splurge on (and which to save) when you're decorating or furnishing your home? This common question is something we're talking about in today's epsiode. What home decorating items should I splurge on and which should I save money on? Saving and splurging is all based off of personal finances, priorities, need, design style/personal preference, but how I base my decisions currently, in this season of life... The four items I would SPLURGE on: 1. Anchor pieces: These are the pieces that are too costly to replace every couple of years. They generally need to stand the test of time so having higher quality (= higher price point) can be beneficial. 2. Electrical: Unless I felt confident changing out my own overhead light fixtures or hiding cords, I would without a doubt splurge on this expense. Changing your overhead light fixtures is a relatively inexpensive way to add A LOT of character and personality to your home. 3. Hiring for built-ins: Built-ins, when done well, instantly elevate your home making it look more finished with character and charm. If building something is not within your wheelhouse, this is an expense worth splurging on! 4. Updating foundational pieces: I am not referring to the foundation of your building/home. But I am referring to the foundation of your cohesive design plan and there are two foundational items within your homes that SHOULD be paid attention to: your floors and your walls. If one of those is 'off' it will likely throw off you entire design. Because it's that important, choices you bring in should be filtered through the lense of "Does this work with my foundation - floors/walls." If the flooring is disjointed, saving and investing there will reap BIG design rewards (and re-sale too!). Need help knowing what to save or splurge on? In today's episode I'm sharing my 5 Rs - a strategy I use when I'm ready for a fresh new look in my home that doesn't require an expensive bill or putting items on credit. 5 Rs or updating or refreshing your home deocr 1. Reimagine: Getting yourself into a posture of creativity will help you to see potential changes that you may not have seen before. 2. Rearrange: There are NO rules that say where you have your furniture today is where it needs to be shackled for the next fifteen years. Move it around, experiment, play, have fun! 3. Remove & Replace: Basically - shop the house. Try furniture or small accessories in different rooms. Swap out lamps, side tables, textiles in order to refresh another space. And goodness...check your cupboards and storage for forgotten treasures. 4. Rethink: If you have only look at a dresser and say that dresser can only do ONE job...think again! Rethink its purpose (and beauty) by thinking about how it can function in a different space for a different purpose. Example: a lowboy dresser being used as a sideboard in the dining room. Guaranteed, no one else in the neighborhood will be using the same one. 5. Repair: If you have something that you love that feels beyond repair...think again. Fix it, zhuzh it - paint, stain, new knobs, legs, pole wrap, caning, lighting, wallpaper backing...if you can think it, you can do it.   Better Than Basics Bootcamp April 29 - May 1 9am PST | 10 am MST | 11am CST | 12pm EST ...................................... But home has a backdrop, a landscape to the heart and home definitely has a feeling. How you feel about your home is shrouded in every memory - those that provoke laughter or tears. If you don't like the backdrop to those memories: frustration, overwhelm, disarray, disorganization, chaos, clutter...as the illustrator of your home's canvas - YOU HAVE THE POWER TO CHANGE IT! Simply put...home matters. It should be: * a respite at the end of a long day * a shelter from the literal and figurative storms * a comfort when returning from long times away * an invitation to relax and restore * a place for you to feel inspired and delighted * a scared space for all the memories that make up the landscape of your legacy So...how do you feel about your home? Hey friend! Have you ever wondered what what REALLY goes into having a well styled home - like all those pretty pictures you see on Instagram or Pinterest? Yes...cohesiveness matters. Yes...being in tune with your design style is important. Yes...finding and buying the right things can pull a room together.   What's really at the heart of a well styled home? These 5 elements: 1. Proportion/scale/balance: Not too big, not too small. Things that fit and fit appropriately from ground up, wall inward. 2. Textured lighting: Forget the overhead lighting and opt for layered lighting - table lamps and floor lamps that work harmoniously to cast a cozy glow. 3. Layers & texture: intentionality in home design is ensconced in all the layers! 4. Repetition: the goldilocks rule applies here. Not too much repetition and not too little - just enough. The more subtle the repetition of design elements the better! 5. Negative space: even artists and photographers employ the idea of having negative space in their compositions. The same is true in our homes. Negative space allows your home to shine with all of the intentional decisions you've made.   Join THE COLLECTIVE   Have a question YOU want answered on the show? Hey friend! Last week I shared WHERE I shop, today...I'm sharing HOW I shop. I'm just like you - living on a budget trying to make my pennies stretch from month to month, while being fiscally responsible! Doing so doesn't mean that I solely rely on shopping second hand, though if you've been around for a while, you know that is one of my favorite strategies for curating my home on a budget!! My top 5 tips for HOW to shop on a budget: 1. Shop the sales. This may seem obvious, but I'm talking the bigger sales - the holiday sales, the yearly or bi-yearly sales that are brand or store specific. 2. Use a cash back app. One of my favorites. Check your credit cards and stores you already buy from. Shop at Target? They have a cash back app! 3. Buy second hand. Not only does this allow you to save money, but when done in conjunction with truly knowing your aesthetic, allows you to be specific with items that match your style!!! 4. Price matching. Does your favorite home decor store offer price matching? Check. I know Target does - even with online prices from their own stores. 5. Don't buy everything at once. Not only will you spend more money than you need, but you'll likely have a home that looks like it's been decorated from a Target museum, lacking the curation that happens over a period of time.   Want more tips? Hey friend! If you're only using Pinterest to pin pretty pictures, you may as well STOP using it. Using Pinterest as an effective tool in home decorating is more than being able to recognize a beautiful interior landscape. And if you're NOT using Pinterest because you don't want to be on social media...I have news for you. Pinterest isn't social media - it's a search engine...just like Google. Using Pinterst effectively and strategically for home decorating starts with understanding HOW to use it besides earmarking beautiful photos. Instead try these ideas: 1. Use it for inspiration! Check...you got this. You're likely already an expert. :) 2. Use it to learn the details of your design style. 3. Use it as a resource for learning more: location of sourced items, tutorials, etc. Pinterest is designed to get you OFF the site (unlike social media where it's designed to keep you scrolling). The goal...give you an idea then the direct link to learn more about it. 4. Use it to shop and for brand awareness. 5. Use it to refine your search terms.   How NOT to use Pinterest: Do NOT use it to copy & paste. BIG no-no as this is the number one way you can make your home look opposite of cohesive.   Happy styling! xo, dani   // Links mentioned in show: // Email: hello@figandfarmathome.com Website: https://figandfarmathome.com Join The Collective (monthly membership): https://www.figandfarmathome.com/thecollective Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/figandfarm/ FREE Facebook Community: https://www.bit.ly/design101group

Hey friend! How do you feel about excuses?! Sometimes I think of excuses as trying to make one feel better about their lack of confidence or understanding - maybe a little bit of misinformation. In my line of work I hear excuses all the time. Sometimes it's purely based in the excitement of finally making a breakthrough, but their excitement went before their intentional planning. I could list all of the ways I hear excuses during a project, but the ones that are most profound (maybe even a bit sad) are the ones that explain why someone doesn't want to invest in the way their home looks. Invest, here, does not equal a monetary exchange. Invest could be time related, learning related, decision making related...basically, thinking they, their families or their homes deserve any TLC or attention. These are the five most common excuses I hear re: why someone does not want to invest in their home: 1. It costs too much 2. Fear of making mistakes 3. Overwhelmed by so many choices 4. They have animals or kids, so they can't have nice things 5. They are just really bad at it and can't learn In today's episode, I'm sharing why these 5 excuses are just that...excuses. Hey friend! Are you wanting to elevate the look of your home without breaking the bank like listener Gabby? She sent in a question asking for my best tips to do just that - and I had a hard time stopping. These 5 tips are just the top of the iceberg when wanting to change your space for the better - giving it a little glow up. 1. Declutter: Really...if you stopped here, you'd have the potential to elevate your home considerably.  2. Freshen up worn pieces: Giving tired pieces a little extra TLC - a fresh coat of paint or stain will go liven your home. 3. Check your color palette: Do you have an intentional color palette with one foundational color and a couple of accent colors? Are those colors flowing throughout your open concept home? If not...this is a great place to start. 4. Check the scale and proportion of your items: If things look too small, too big, too full, too short, too wide - it could be throwing off the balance of your room. Adjusting the scale of items that are mis-proportioned is a big step toward elevating your home. 5. Repetition of design elements: Know the difference between repetition and too much of a good thing. Repeating design elements like color, metals, wood tones, etc. ties your room together making it look cohesive.   Cohesiveness is at the core of having an elevated looking home.   Ready to learn more? Hey friend! I get it...when you think you stink at something, it's not super motivating to keep doing it. Right? But learning how to decorate your home is just that - it's a learned skill. Similar to riding a bike, tying your shoes, or baking a cake - you weren't born knowing how to do it, so why should you expect home decorating to be any different? Inside this episode I'm responding to Tracy's Dear Dani letter - trying to bolster her decorating confidence after years of feeling unsuccessful (and now stuck) in the way her home looks and feels. She's wanting a change, but feels a bit scared to give it another go. 5 Tips for building your home decorating confidence 1. Start small: Start with low risk changes rather than expensive (both in time and money) changes that might not work out. Shop the house, rearrange the furniture, get rid of things are all great examples of starting small. 2. Practice with a test run: If you're contemplating change, try mimicking that change and practicing the look before committing any money to it. Listen to the podcast for an example. 3. See it before you decide: Before you buy anything, try taking a screenshot of it and placing it on a word doc so you can see how the items look all together. Once you like it, then try it. 4. Progress over perfection: Just like learning any new skill, it's about the progress rather than perfection. You will make mistakes - like anyone learning a new skill, but using some of the tips will help you practice you home decorating muscles so you begin limiting the amount of mistakes you are making. The end goal - to love your home better than you do today. That happens with progress over time rather than perfection. 5. Hold on to Rules loosely: Let the rules be a companion in decision making ONLY if they are helpful. Not sure what size of curtains to get? Find the rules and let those inform your decision making.   YOU'RE INVITED!!!! To my FREE 5 day LOVE YOUR HOME CHALLENGE!! Happening February 10 - 14th inside your INBOX. Hey friend! Do you wish you had the nerve to be a little more bold in your home decor? Why is it so hard to take a risk when the risk-reward ratio isn't too disparaging? Listener Katie is really nervous about being bold in her decor and that's what we're talking about inside today's episode. I'm sharing 5 tips to help ease her comfort level and these tips, no matter how bold you want to go, will be helpful for you as you continue building your decorating confidence. 5 Tips for Going Bold 1. Know what BOLD means to you: Write it down, define it and better yet... 2. Find an INSPIRATION PHOTO: Use this as a guide or reference, NOT as a map for copying. 3. Define your COLOR PALETTE: Your current foundational color might not support your definition of bold. Be prepared to change that first if need be. 4. Start SMALL: Small could mean one item. It could also mean one room that has doors you can close. Either way, when you're nervous about big change, starting small is comfortable - like tiptoeing into the water instead of diving into the deep end head first. 5. EXPERIMENT, PLAY, HAVE FUN: It's ok to experiment, this is your house after all. But if makes you feel more comfortable- know your exit strategy for the bold decision in case you don't like it.   In this episode I also answered Carrie's question re: The Collective. She was worried about The Collective being hosted on FB as she doesn't have (nor want) to be on social media.   Facts about The Collective: 1. It's hosted on a site called Thrive. Thrive is not social media, but rather a course hosting platform. 2. All LIVE q & a sessions and workshops are hosted on Zoom. The replays of those sessions then live in The Collective's hub (think of it like a library) on Thrive. 3. There is an optional student community on FB, where students of The Collective and Home Design 101 can answer each other's questions, post pictures of their progress, etc, but ALL Collective content, announcements, trainings, etc. live on the Thrive platform.  Happy Styling!! dani   // Links mentioned in show: // Email: hello@figandfarmathome.com Website: https://figandfarmathome.com Join The Collective (monthly membership): https://www.figandfarmathome.com/thecollective Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/figandfarm/ FREE Facebook Community: https://www.bit.ly/design101group

Hey friend!  It's here - the most anticipated episode all year. The What's Hot & What's Not in home design in 2025. This year I gathered my insight from Better Homes and Garden, House Beautiful, Southern Living and Elle Decor. Surprisingly this year, more than any other years, most of these lists were in alignment and agreement with each other - not many outliers.  Of course, I added my personal opinion about some of them, where others I was in complete agreement and even some where I was in disagreement. :)  Trend or not, recommended design choices by fancy-pants designers or not, the ultimate goal here is for you to LOVE YOUR HOME. To release any expectations that your homes should be Pinterset perfect or Instagram worthy. Your home should be a reflection of you and if that means you put  carpet into your bathroom because you love the way if feels on your feet when you step out of the bath (you'll have to listen to the episode to know WHY in 2025 I'm talking about carpeted bathrooms), if it makes you happy - it's OK. ;)  Joking aside, I know that making decisions in your home is a big deal. It's frustrating, laborious and connected to a lot of things that have nothing to do with the ultimate goal of what it looks like: money spent, compromising styles, honoring grandma's heirlooms, etc. If you are ready for a bit of guidance and a lot of support as you balance it all in 2025 - I invite you to book a Decorating SOS Coaching Call.       Hey Friend! Welcome to 2025 and a brand new series on the fig & farm (at home) podcast. Every Tuesday I'll be answering listener questions in my new Dear Dani series. Have a question that you want answered? Leave it here: hello@figandfarmathome.com  Today's question comes from Amanda who wants to know how to make her home look less disjointed. The 'fancy' word we use in the design world is 'cohesive' and the goal is to do just that, but it takes a bit of work. In this episode I'm sharing 5 quick tips so you can make your home look and feel cohesive when you aren't entirely sure where to start. 5 Easy ways to make your home look cohesive 1. Learn your design style (aka your aesthetic): pay attention to the all the details of the things you gravitate to time and time again. 2. Write those details down. 3. Leave your card at home and go on a field trip to your favorite home decor store. Act as-if you are making selections and see if the things you would choose match with the design elements you noticed in tip 1. If they do...you're on to your aesthetic. If they don't...go back to tip 1 and dive in a bit more. 4. Using your list, go through the items in your home and start decluttering items that don't match that aesthetic or design style, keeping the items that do. 5. Shop your home. Once the extra items are removed, now you have the foundation for shopping your home instead of shopping the store whenever inspiration to re-decorate a room strikes   Happy styling!! xo, dani   // Links mentioned in show: // Email: hello@figandfarmathome.com Website: https://figandfarmathome.com Join The Collective (monthly membership): https://www.figandfarmathome.com/thecollective Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/figandfarm/ FREE Facebook Community: https://www.bit.ly/design101group

Hey friend! Have you ever set goals for your home? We set new goals or make resolutions each year - for better health, better fitness, learning a new skill...but what about goals we have for our homes?  In this episode I'm sharing the importance of reflecting on how your home served you this past year (or if you served it) and how to make goals for your home that ultimately make you feel better about the place you lay your head each night.  Goals can by physical with a tactical, tangible result or they can be social/emotional - tied to the feelings you have surrounding your home. Acknowledging the social/emotional goals you have for your home is just as important (if not, more so) than addressing the physical goals first.  The art of creating goals for your home comes from reflecting on the ways your home met your needs and being honest about the steps toward remediation during the next year. Asking yourself what changes need to be made and what help you may need to accomplish those goals is a critical part of the journey.  Grab a notebook and a pen - you're going to need it to for this episode.  Ready to make a plan to meet your home goals in 2025? Hey friend! As I was preparing my Thanksgiving menu this week, I came across recipes that were nostalgic - tucked away in a box and pulled out once a year, if that. Those recipes? They were written by my mom who passed away six years ago. I haven't had her frozen fruit salad for years - decades even, but it was definitely part of my childhood. Those recipes got me thinking... HOW ARE YOU TELLING YOUR FAMILY'S STORY IN YOUR HOME DECORATING?  In today's episode, I'm sharing five ideas for decorating with a subtle nod to your family story that go beyond hanging family photos on the wall. These are subtle nods to memories and cherished moments that are too precious to have hidden in a box in the closet.  5 ways to tell your story in home decorating: 1. Understand your decorating style: There's a direct correlation to understanding your style and decorating with confidence. Confident choices allow you to move away from the generic, bed in the bag, pieces and into more nuanced, subtle decision making. It's there that you'll find your story.  2. Out of the box artwork: Artwork doesn't have to be framed to be considered art. Hanging collections made from special interests or hobbies can make a beautiful, unique to your story piece of art. Collections of vintage cameras, musical instruments, sporting equipment immediately come to mind. Artwork of special locations directly tied to family history - location of proposal, wedding, etc. aren't overtly shouting "I was here - everyone take notice." Instead they're serving as reminders of how important that special memory is to you and your family.  3. Special interests and hobbies: As above, displaying remnants of those special interests or hobbies, rather than storing them away in boxes for a peek every once in a while can be a nuanced, whimsical and delightful way to add character to your home that item from Target just can't provide.  4. Family heirlooms: Mixing and matching old and new makes such a delightful curated look in your home while providing opportunities for them to have a second chapter. If you don't like their original state, try modifying it to make it fit more of your current aesthetic.  5. Family history: Stories or recipes written down and framed, ticket stubs of first dates, vintage clocks set to birth times of your babies, wedding china out of the box and displayed as an installation in your dining room are all examples of living history. Getting them out of the box, dusted off and serving as reminders of who you are add a delightful touch to your home.    ANNOUNCEMENT!!! 291 // LIVE coaching with Amy: Working with what you HAVE in your home (even if you hate it) when there's no budget for big changes

Hey friend!   In this week's podcast I'm chatting with Amy who wants her home to feel bright and airy, but she has a problem. The dark kitchen cabinets, the black countertop and the black tile floor, along with the black dining table are all keeping her from realizing her goals. But with no room in the budget to make these BIG foundational changes to her home, Amy is wanting to know her options.  Amy has a couple options:  1. Spend a lot of money she doesn't have replacing everything in the style that she likes it now (not a feasible option).  2. Do nothing and continue hating her home and the way it looks, waiting and wishing for the day when the funds are available for option 1.  3. Learn which changes she can make to lighten up her space, using what she currently has and bringing in supporting items to lighten her open concept home WHILE making it look cohesive.  Option 3 may sound too good to be true, but the truth is we often times only see option 1 and option 2 as likely possibilities. When you work within your own understanding of a skill, sometimes you don't see the third option.  Decorating SOS Coaching Calls are meant to help you see the third option. They're designed to help you get unstuck in what ever is keeping you from reaching your home goals.  What did Amy learn? She actually has a really great start at having a light and airy home. There's no need to paint anything. And the black table that she though was a bully - the recommendation was to actually keep it as is, but to change up other things in the room.  You'll hear my strategy for combatting darkness, how furniture carries a visual weight with it and how strategic layers will not only make her space feel lighter and brighter, but more cozy too. And all of those suggested changes will help her bully of a kitchen feel more cohesive with the rest of her home.  If you'd like help creating a plan for your home, go to https://figandfarmathome.com/decorating-sos to book a call. 290 // Stress-free hosting: Quick tips for a cozy, guest-ready home!

Hey friend! As we continue this mini series: Get your home holiday ready, it's important that we don't forget to get ready to take care of the people we're inviting into our space. Hosting is a natural gifting - those who do it well, WOW do they do it well. For others, it's a learned skill. But like decorating, hosting can be taught.  Preparing your space adequately for guests and their comfort is important in both the BIG ways as well as the small details.  In today's episode I'm sharing 4 tips to host well and with one of the tips, I admittedly get very vulnerable as I share a bit of personal experience. In a nutshell, the four things that will help you be a better hostess are:  1. Think of your own comfort! This sounds counter intuitive when we're learning tips about hosting others, but before we can do that I want you be mindful of experiences YOU have had where you were the recipient of great hosting and experiences when the hosting rather sucked. Write those down - the details of what made those experiences stand out for you. You'll use those details to help prepare for the guests in your home.  2. Think of guests needs beforehand! Thinking big picture about any accommodations they might need to make their stay a bit more comfortable before they arrive will help your time together go smoothly. 3. Pay attention to the SMALL details! Things like extra blankets, a fan, lighting to the bathroom in the middle of the night, cozy socks, even Kleenex and access to extra toiletries will help you guest feel like you've though of every last detail.  4. Be observant in the moment! Catching little things like an empty coffee cup or a glance around the room wondering where to place a bag - these observations and acting upon them will give you a gold star as a hostess.    TABLESCAPE WORKSHOP!
