Can You Deduct Life Insurance Premiums? The Truth Every Business Owner Needs to Know

The Money Advantage Podcast

Recently, Bruce shared a story that perfectly illustrates unexpected life challenges—his basement flooded, turning a peaceful Easter weekend into an emergency cleanup session. Just as unexpected problems can flood your home, unanswered financial questions can flood your business strategy, especially questions like: "Can you deduct life insurance premiums?" https://www.youtube.com/live/crKKtLvZ44k Tax questions, much like sudden home repairs, can disrupt your carefully planned financial landscape. Whether it's water damage or unclear tax regulations, not addressing the problem can lead to costly mistakes down the road. Today, Bruce and I aim to clear up one of these significant financial uncertainties for business owners. Why Understanding Life Insurance Deductions MattersUnderstanding the Deductibility of Life Insurance PremiumsCan You Deduct Life Insurance PremiumsThe Supreme Court's Stance and Its ImplicationsStrategic Ways to Indirectly Deduct PremiumsAvoiding Short-Term Tax MistakesContracts vs. Accounts: Ensuring Long-Term CertaintyNavigating Complexity with Professional HelpThe Strategic Power of Life Insurance PremiumsBook A Strategy Call Why Understanding Life Insurance Deductions Matters The question "Can you deduct life insurance premiums?" isn't just a minor tax issue—it's central to building an efficient, effective, and robust financial strategy. Life insurance policies are powerful financial tools that, when used correctly, can significantly enhance your financial well-being. However, misunderstandings about their tax implications can lead to missed opportunities or even costly errors. In this detailed article, you'll gain clarity regarding the question "Can you deduct life insurance premiums?", the rationale behind IRS rulings, practical and legitimate strategies to indirectly achieve similar benefits, and the pitfalls to avoid in your quest for tax efficiency. By mastering these concepts, you'll be well-equipped to incorporate life insurance intelligently into your broader financial planning strategy. Understanding the Deductibility of Life Insurance Premiums Can You Deduct Life Insurance Premiums Bruce frequently encounters confusion among business owners about deducting life insurance premiums. Let's clear this up immediately: in most cases, you cannot directly deduct life insurance premiums from your taxes if the business owner benefits directly from the policy. The IRS views this scenario as lacking genuine "economic substance," as the policyholder ultimately recoups these premiums through a tax-free death benefit, meaning there's no real economic loss to justify a deduction. The Supreme Court's Stance and Its Implications Bruce highlighted a crucial Supreme Court ruling that set clear boundaries for tax deductions related to life insurance. This landmark decision explicitly stated that deducting premiums or interest on life insurance loans is generally not permissible when the insured party directly benefits. The reasoning is straightforward: since you or your estate will eventually receive these premiums back in the form of a tax-free death benefit, the premiums do not represent an actual financial loss or expense that justifies a tax deduction. Understanding this ruling can save you from potentially costly mistakes and help you align your tax strategies with IRS expectations. Strategic Ways to Indirectly Deduct Premiums Despite the restrictions, Bruce and I discussed legitimate and strategic methods to effectively reduce taxable income and indirectly finance life insurance premiums: Employing Family Members: Bruce pays his father for legitimate business-related marketing tasks. As his father falls into a lower tax bracket, this transaction reduces Bruce's taxable income and generates additional cash flow, indirectly supporting life insurance premium payments. Paying Your Children: Another powerful strategy is employing your children within your bus...

"When we view (perceive) prayer as a call to duty or a responsibility, it also affects how we approach it. We feel obliged to pray and guilty when we don't do it. This perspective often leads us to believe that negative consequences may befall us if we neglect prayer and makes our prayer life driven by fear and guilt. But, 2 Timothy 1:7 states, 'For God has not given us a spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.'"Does our perception process affect our prayer life? In Part 2, Janet McHenry, author of Praying Personalities: Finding Your Natural Prayer Style, continues to guide us into understanding the difference between perceiving prayer as a privilege instead of a responsibility. Welcome to the first Quick Query Tips episode! This is a very hands-on episode as Abigail shares how she researches literary agents, editors, and authors for the show. Although the spreadsheet she uses is slightly different than what she recommends a writer use (see her episode with Tee Moore for more details on the ideal spreadsheet for the research process), the strategies are the same. To demonstrate, Abigail uses the three strategies to find literary agents she wants to email *live*—and pushes writers to question why a literary agent would be a good fit for their querying book and writing and publishing career. #74: The Strategic Ways You Can Benefit from A Growth Mindset

Sales is Easy!

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 26, 2022 14:26

Whether you are a leader in your company, own your own business, or are just looking to super-charge your personal development, you can use your growth mindset to help you get ahead and accomplish your goals. Being growth-oriented means that you value learning in yourself, and you can parlay this into how you interact with others, how you get results, and how well you achieve success. Here are just a few of the ways your growth mindset can help you realize your dreams.  Encourage Yourself and Others to Take Risks When you are ready to make substantial changes, you could improve your efforts by taking significant risks. Innovation and gains are achieved when you really push your boundaries. Taking risks yourself and setting the conditions that allow others around you to be willing to take risks, too, is an integral part of getting ahead. Whether in your business or personal life, you can lead by example when it comes to learning from your risks and being open to opportunities. Even your children can learn from this behavior.  Surround Yourself with Learners When you are trying to be more growth-oriented in your own life, it is beneficial to have others with this outlook around you. And the more people you work with and spend time with that have grown mindsets, the more you will develop the ability to see possibilities and opportunities in life. Seek out mentors, friends, co-workers, and people on your business team who are growth-oriented, and you can work together to support each other's efforts to challenge yourself strategically.  Develop Skills Outside of Your Work When you adopt a growth mindset, any type of new learning can fuel your passion and spur your personal development. Encouraging yourself and others to explore new interests and develop skills outside of their daily work can help you all in the various aspects of your life. Learning new hobbies or exploring new interests helps you collaborate with others, gives you fresh ideas on how to solve problems, and keeps your brain active and energized. As a leader, the more varied your interests and knowledge, the more effective you will be.  Fuel Commitment from Others When you encourage those around you to reach their full potential, they become more invested in helping you succeed, as well. Your employees, team members, and family will all be more determined to help you realize your goals when they know you are equally committed to assisting them in realizing their own. When you value learning and hard work in others, they will reward you with outstanding performance and commitment.  Gain Insight from Outside Perspectives A growth mindset helps you embrace what you can learn from others, including those with very different perspectives from you. When you are leading an initiative or working to accomplish a goal, those with differing backgrounds, experiences, and viewpoints are an excellent resource. They see things that you cannot and can help you solve problems in innovative ways, but you must be open to learning from them.  Stay on Top of Your Game When you adopt a growth-oriented way of thinking, you set yourself up to be a continuous learner, someone who will always be curious and engaged. When you develop a habit of lifelong learning, you stay fresh in your field, you are up on the latest advancements and research, and you value continuing development at home and work. Those who keep learning are more likely to remain successful for more extended periods, and a willingness to learn is the most-cited trait people look for in leaders. To stay strategic and place yourself always at the ready, having a growth mindset will never steer you wrong.  Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Today we’re talking 9 strategic ways to move old stock. How do you determine if something is slow moving, apart from the obvious of seeing it on the shelves constantly? There are a few methods, but the one I go to is turn over. You generally get 30 day terms with a supplier, so if an item is still sitting on your shelf, or in your storeroom 60 or 90 days later, it’s time either rethink the product, or the amount you purchase. Every square meter of your store is real estate. Even if you have an online store. And for every item that takes up space, but isn’t selling, it’s costing you money, either in lost sales, or the inability to free up those funds to purchase new or different stock. Should you keep it, just because? Someone MIGHT want it, right? It makes your store look full. That might be the case with one or 2 items, but when you start to have 10, 10, 50 skus that just aren’t moving, all of a sudden, it adds up. You’ve managed to get through the holiday season, the frenzy of the sale season, and now, you’re in that post-holiday lull. Or perhaps you’re one of those retail stores, whose trade actually drops during the holiday period. So what do you do, to make that time effective for you and your business? There will always be slow times in your business.  The most obvious thing to do to make this time effective, is to... Download Tips And Ways To Grow Your Business When Retail Is Slow 1) Take a holiday, because you need to have downtime, you need to recharge. It’s super important to your mental and physical health, and let’s not forget, you are the most important part of your business. But if taking a holiday is not on your agenda, here are twelve things you can do to make the most use of this time. 2) The most effective thing that you can do is to take this time to sit down, and map out your marketing advertising and editorial calendars. Knowing where you’re headed in the coming twelve months will give you confidence and focus, and hopefully stop all those last minute rushes, confusion and aggravation that tends to come with unplanned activities 3) Check out your product descriptions on your website and update them. The google gods love you to be different, and original. If, in your haste to get products onto your site, you’ve just copied and pasted the manufacturers descriptions, now is the time to go and make them unique to your store. [Tweet "Write what you love about the product, and sizes or other things that are frequently asked questions about your products"] 4) Clean out your store room. Take stock of what’s in your stock room. Pull everything out, clean the shelves, vacuum all those crevices and when you’re putting everything back in, assess it’s suitability in your store. Is it time to offload a bunch of old stock? If so, I’ll pop a link to my most downloaded resource in the show notes, 9 Strategic Ways to Move Old Stock 5) Write some blog posts. If you’ve been putting off this blog post idea that I always talk about, now is the time to get it sorted. You could write a whole 6 months worth of posts over these few weeks 6) Expand your mind. Take this time to undertake a bit of professional development. Learn something new. If you need some ideas, I’ve got 2 courses that just might suit you. If you’re not up for the time and energy a course takes, try a 1 day course on how to use your camera better, or how to use a piece of software that will make your life easier 7) Clean out your “online” store room. Maybe you’re one of those people that files everything methodically. If so, skip to point 8, but if you make up the 99% of us that don’t, this is a great time to go through and sort out your digital files and documents. Whilst you’re at it, scan all those pieces of paper you have lying around and file them in your new, clean, digital system. 8) Listen to some podcasts. Now that you’ve got so time up your sleeve, pop in a set of earbuds and load up your phone or digital device of choice and learn on the go. Bonus, you can do this whilst doing most of the other items on this list. 9) Write an ebook. If the pop up on your website says sign up to our newsletter and save 10% off your first order. It’s time to make a change. What questions do you always get asked? Write a simple FAQ sheet, create a tutorial or sink your teeth in and write an ebook. Solve a problem for your customers instead of a measly 10% discount. 10) Schedule some social media posts. If facebook, twitter and instagram often seem like a chore, quest up a bunch of relevant posts into hostile or buffer, so that when it gets busier, it’s one less thing for you to have to worry about. 11) Join or create a mastermind group. By surrounding yourself with like minded people, you’d be amazed at how much further you’ll advance in business and life. 12) Write some processes. Systems are essential to running a business. Even if you fly solo in your retail biz, it’s important to put systems in place to ensure that when the time comes, you’re not frantically trying to create them, or worse still, trying to onboard a new team member without them. As you can see, there are many things that you can be doing when your store isn't busy. This week I’ve created a download of not 12, but 21 things you can do when you have some free time in your business. You can download that at salenaknihgt.com, along with a host of other actionable biz strategies for your retail business. And whilst you’re over on the website, checkout the cool new feature I just installed, where you can ask me your own retail biz question. On this episode of the Online Marketing Made Easy Podcast, we talk all about Twitter. Since I am not a Twitter expert, I have invited my friend and mentor, Michael Stelzner, on the show to talk about some very specific strategies he uses to promote his live and online events with Twitter. Mike would say that he too is not a Twitter expert, but I would disagree because he is doing things on Twitter that are getting some serious results - and he’s been perfecting his Twitter strategy for many, many years, so in my book, he’s a pro. For those of you who might not know Mike, he is the founder of  the best social media site around, Social Media Examiner, which he launched  in October of 2009, which has exploded, to say the least. Last year more than 7.5 million people visited the site. He's the author of two books (Launch & Writing White Papers) and is host of the Social Media Marketing Podcast. He also founded the parenting blog MyKidsAdventures.com. 5 Strategic Ways to Promote with Twitter 1. Transactional Tweets This type of tweet has a psychological component to it. When people have just made a purchase or signed up for a newsletter, they're poised to take action, and are more likely to do the next thing you ask them to do. Therefore, as soon as the transaction is complete, send them to a thank you page, and on the page, add a text link with a request. For instance, you may have a text link that says something like, "Click here to tweet your excitement about (coming to an event, a course they just purchased, etc.). When they click on the link, have it open up a pre-populated tweet that says something like, "I'm attending/just purchased. . ."  Be sure to include a link to the event or item being tweeted about. 2. Verbal Tweets Podcast listeners are often on the go. They may be listening from the gym, while they're driving, etc, so give them a URL that is easy to remember. Mike directs people to go to SocialMediaExaminer.com/love. I actually stole this idea from Mike, and on occasion in my podcast you'll hear me ask you to go to AmyPorterfield.com/love. If you click on that link, you'll see that it opens up a window with a pre-populated tweet about how much they love my podcast. This is a great way to get your podcast listeners to spread the word about your podcast! 3. Shout-Out Tweets Shout-out tweets are a great way to give love to someone! An example of how Mike uses this technique is that he lists all of the speakers for his events and asks people to click on the name of their favorite presenter. When they do, again, a pre-populated tweet opens up that says something like, "Hey [name], I'm really looking forward to meeting you at [event]." 4. Affiliate Tweets Write up 10-15 different tweets that promote your product or event, and put them on a blog page or in an email. All people have to do is add their affiliate link to the tweets you've crafted, and they can then easily be shared. The easier you make things, the more likely people are to share! You can use this same strategy even if you don't have affiliates, but have other offerings that you want your audience to help you promote. 5. Custom Tweets Social share buttons such as Digg Digg have been around for awhile, but when people use them, they promote only the specific page or post the person is on. But you may not want the person driving traffic to the page they are on, such as on the page with information on hotels for an event that is being promoted. The solution is to craft custom tweets, and then embed that code on any page. This enables you to include a link to the page you want people to go to, regardless of the page they tweeted from. This also gives great social proof because instead of having several Twitter buttons with smaller tweet counts, when you use the widget, the tweet count is aggregated. Hashtags In the final third of the show, Michael dove deep into how to best use Hashtags on Twitter, as well as shared some of his favorite Twitter tools.
