In today's rapidly evolving landscape of technology, Artificial Intelligence isn't just another tool but is becoming a part of the framework of how we live and work. But with that realization comes the question: What does it mean to use AI responsibly? How do we balance innovation with impact? And what happens if we let fear get in our way of engaging with AI at all? In this episode, Mallory Erickson and Nathan Chappell will dive into those tensions. Their aim is not to have all the answers but to explore the importance of curiosity, experimentation, and value-driven decision-making.   Mallory Erickson is a former fundraiser, keynote speaker, author, and host of What the Fundraising, and the creator of Practivated, the first-ever AI-powered donor conversation simulator. She helps fundraisers navigate the overlap of strategy, coaching, and behavior design so they can focus on the most human aspects of their work: connecting. She has helped more than 60,000 fundraisers raise more with less burnout, overwhelm, and more alignment. She is also a firm believer that the nonprofit sector has the capacity to address the problems of the world.   In this conversation, Mallory and Nathan find themselves discussing the following topics regarding the use and creation of responsible AI: the role of AI in solving fundraising challenges, the combination of curiosity, collaboration, and experimentation, the balance between innovation and responsibility, the fear of the unknown, the risk of not using AI at all. Mallory further explains the creation of Practivated and its impact on building fundraising confidence.     HIGHLIGHTS  [04.19] Exploring the potential of AI in solving fundraising challenges.  [09.08] Developing responsible AI tools for fundraising.  [16.21] Curiosity, Collaboration, and experimentation.  [21.27] The development of Practivated, a tool for building fundraising confidence through AI.   [29.53] The balance between innovation and responsibility.  [36.25] The risk of not trying to use AI at all.   Connect with Mallory Erickson  LinkedIn – linkedin.com/in/mallory-erickson-bressler/   Website - malloryerickson.com/                     practivated.com/   Connect with Nathan and Scott: LinkedIn (Nathan): linkedin.com/in/nathanchappell/ LinkedIn (Scott): linkedin.com/in/scott-rosenkrans Website: fundraising.ai/

Ever felt like you're wearing a mask in your fundraising role? I have. In my recent chat with Mallory Erickson, we pulled back the curtain on the real struggles and triumphs of nonprofit professionals. From battling burnout to embracing alignment, we dove deep into the heart of what makes fundraising both challenging and rewarding. Mallory shared several practical strategies that we can implement immediately:Cultivate curiosity: When faced with resistance or fear, get curious about where those feelings are coming from. This can help create space for new possibilities.Acknowledge discomfort: Recognize that feeling uncomfortable is normal in fundraising. Not all discomfort is bad – sometimes it's a sign we're growing or staying true to our values.Focus on removing barriers: Instead of always trying to add new strategies, look at what's holding you back and work on removing those obstacles.Prioritize and focus: Mallory shared how she grew fundraising by 10 times in six months by focusing intensely on one area (corporate partnerships) rather than trying to do everything at once. What if I told you that your fundraising fears are not only normal but could be the key to unlocking your potential?Listen to this juicy episode and then share it with everyone. In this episode, I delve deep into the transformative impact of Dr. BJ Fogg's behavior model on my fundraising career. I learned that the behavior model hinges on the triad of motivation, ability, and prompts. The interplay of these three elements determines whether an individual takes action or not. Understanding this principle was pivotal for me in comprehending why donors contribute, debunking the myth that donors give without a prompt. This led to a shift in my approach, focusing on enhancing donor motivation, making the action easier, and prompting donations strategically. Applying the Fogg behavior model in designing donor engagement and donor calls to action was a game-changer in my work, and it ensured more frictionless donor experiences. In the second part of this epsiode, I focus on how the Fogg behavior model has been instrumental in shaping my own behavior as a fundraiser. Notably, the model emphasizes that fundraising actions, though simple, are not necessarily easy because they involve fear and vulnerability. I emphasize the need to distinguish between 'simple' and 'easy,' urging fundraisers to increase hope and decrease fear. To make fundraising tasks easier, I propose breaking them down into small steps, what we call 'tiny habits.' Inside Power Partners, I share a range of fundraising habits using this model. Also, we tackle resistance in fundraising, exploring how to prompt ourselves effectively to accomplish those tasks that linger on our to-do lists. At the end of the day, the key take-away is that the number one indicator of donor behavior is fundraiser behavior, and it's crucial to address any fear related to fundraising to improve donor engagement. I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I enjoyed creating it for you! In this episode, you will learn: The Fundamentals of the Fogg Behavior Model: Dr. BJ Fogg's behavior model revolves around three key components - motivation, ability, and prompt. Understanding this model helps to predict and shape human behavior, which is essential in fundraising. The Importance of Prompting in Donor Engagement: Contrary to popular belief, donors usually don't give without being prompted. Knowing how to increase donor motivation and make the action of giving easier can greatly enhance donor engagement and ultimately your fundraising results. The Distinction Between Simple and Easy Tasks in Fundraising: While some fundraising tasks may seem simple, they often aren't easy due to fear and vulnerability associated with them. By breaking these tasks down into smaller, more manageable actions or 'tiny habits', we can make them easier and overcome the hurdles preventing us from completing them. The Connection Between Fundraiser Behavior and Donor Behavior: One of the key takeaways is recognizing that fundraiser behavior significantly impacts donor behavior. By addressing fears related to fundraising and implementing strategies to boost our own motivation, we can influence donor engagement in a positive way. In this episode of Raise More from the Right Funders I share the journey that led to the creation of the Power Partners Formula, a transformative approach to fundraising that I pioneered. I began as an accidental fundraiser who truly disliked the process, yet I discovered a more fulfilling path through building power partnerships - an innovative concept that diverges from the traditional understanding of fundraising. Inspired by my training in executive coaching, habit and behavior design, and design thinking, I revolutionized my approach and saw incredible results, successfully raising funds for an organization from one million to 3.8 million, all while growing to love fundraising. In this episode, you will learn: The concept of Power Partners: I share my unique approach to fundraising, a concept I developed called Power Partners. Power Partners are individuals, foundations, or corporations that create mutually beneficial strategic partnerships with nonprofits, as well as nonprofit leaders who approach building these relationships with vulnerability, honesty, and curiosity. The Power Partners Formula: I introduce my Power Partners Formula, a program designed to support nonprofit leaders in overcoming their internal blocks to successful fundraising. The formula encourages professionals to identify and effectively engage with different types of funders and prepares them for all types of funder meetings. The signs of a Power Partnership: I outline six key signs that indicate when you are successfully building a power partnership. From standing up for your organization's needs, to not instantly responding to a funder's requests, these signs signify a shift from the traditional dynamics of fundraising to a healthier, more sustainable relationship. The importance of self-worth and alignment in fundraising: Through my personal journey, I emphasize the importance of recognizing your value as a fundraiser and finding alignment with your mission and tasks. By staying true to your organization's purpose and needs, you can avoid wasting time chasing the wrong donors and instead focus on building fruitful partnerships. In this episode, I delve into the reasons why integrating executive coaching tools in fundraising is a vital strategy. I explore our inner barriers that often hinder our actions and discuss the different styles of fundraising energies. I understand that fundraising is a deeply personal and vulnerable process, frequently triggering our nervous systems. By integrating executive coaching tools, understanding various fundraising styles, and practicing awareness and choice, I believe we can tackle the challenges of fundraising more effectively. I emphasize that even in those tough moments, we all have the power to shift our narratives and energy. In this episode, you will learn: The Role of Time and Resistance in Fundraising: I explore the common challenges in fundraising and acknowledge that scarcity of time can indeed be a real issue, but also that fundraising's discomfort often allows time to be used as an excuse for inaction. Fundraising as a Personal Experience: I argue that fundraising is deeply personal and often activates our nervous systems. I discuss how activities like rejection, managing up to supervisors, and continuously validating our worth can trigger our nervous system and evoke feelings of vulnerability. The Importance of Recognizing Emotions in Fundraising: I explain the importance of acknowledging the feelings triggered by fundraising and providing tools to handle self-doubt and imposter syndrome. I describe the phenomenon of the "gremlin" or self-critic and the protective role it plays in keeping us safe. The Seven Styles of Fundraising: I introduce the concept of the "seven styles of fundraising," a transformation of the seven styles of leadership identified in the Energy Leadership Index.  Harnessing Energy Levels for Effective Fundraising: I talk about the importance of harnessing different styles of fundraising and choosing how to show up in different fundraising situations. I explain how the energy infused in communication can alter interactions with donors and the success of fundraising activities. Transitioning from Catabolic to Anabolic Energy in Fundraising: I discuss the importance of supporting ourselves when our catabolic energy is activated and understanding how to down-regulate our nervous system to move into more anaerobic energy. The Role of Executive Coaching in Fundraising: I argue that fundraising should always incorporate executive coaching tools due to the prevalence of self-doubt, imposter syndrome, and perfectionism in fundraising. I mention how I teach to address thoughts and beliefs that might prevent action within my program, Power Partners. In this episode, I talk about my shift from a money-first fundraising ideology to alignment-first fundraising. Alignment-first fundraising, integral to the Power Partners Formula, reimagines financial resources within organizations. Recounting personal experiences, I reveal how the focus on money can eclipse mission alignment, leading to power imbalances and suboptimal choices. Instead, I suggest refocusing from 'who has the money' to 'where is the mission, value, and purpose alignment?' This shift promotes purpose over profit in fundraising. In the second half, I detail my transformation through alignment-first fundraising. Stressing the importance of synergizing with aligned funders, this shift transcends mere fundraising to building shared-vision relationships. I discuss the realization that funds raised in alignment with your mission and values outperform strings-attached money. Alignment fundraising reframes our narrative from a relentless pursuit to cooperative engagement, enhancing the work's impact. Dive in to explore how alignment fundraising empowers organizations to effectively fulfill their mission. In this episode, you will learn: About alignment-first fundraising: This approach prioritizes the synchronization of an organization's mission and values with their donors'. The perils of a finance-focused approach: I discuss how a sole focus on money can create uncomfortable power dynamics and derail mission alignment. The importance of multi-faceted alignment: I underline the necessity of aligning all aspects of your organization's work with your donors. This episode uncovers how your nonprofit can identify its fundraising 'low-hanging fruit'. I draw from personal experience as a fundraising consultant and organizational leader to dispel a common misconception - not every organization is a suitable candidate for every type of funding. Factors like your operational focus and stage of development dictate the fundraising avenues that are accessible to you. Using my own story of operating in a niche organization, I explain how we realized our assets were better suited to corporate and individual funding rather than foundation funding. Delving deeper, I introduce "funder mapping," a tool we employ in my Power Partners formula to determine potential funders based on your unique organizational assets. Understanding the different "funder lenses" – how foundations, corporate partners, and individuals perceive your organization – allows for a strategic approach to fundraising. I walk you through "asset mapping," the process of identifying what your organization can offer to various funders. Ultimately, this equips you with the ability to pinpoint the fundraising approach best suited to your organization and foster stronger, more fruitful partnerships. As always, if you need further guidance, that's exactly what we offer in the Power Partners formula. In this episode, you will learn: The concept of 'low-hanging fruit' in fundraising: Understanding which type of fundraising is most suitable for your organization based on the assets you have and the stage of development you're at. The importance of funder mapping: This process allows you to identify potential funders for your organization based on how they align with your organizational assets and missions. Understanding funder lenses and asset mapping: Learning to view your organization from the perspectives of different funders (foundation, corporate partners, individuals) and identifying the assets you have that are valuable to these particular types of funders. Uncomfortable, squirmy and guilty? Those are the common side effects when thinking about fundraising. But, fundraising isn't a dirty word. Like any other business or entity right now, non-profits are facing a dilemma:  How do you break through the noise? How do you keep up your own resilience around messaging when it feels like it's falling on deaf ears? We're in an attention economy and translating your mission and message into bite-sized pieces is more important than ever. That being said, non-profits' marketing and fundraising marketing efforts are held to a different standard. No one might complain about getting thirty emails from Lululemon about holiday sales, but getting a half-dozen messages from a non-profit about end-of-year fundraising goals can make people huff and puff and blow your email right until the dreaded trash can. Executive coach and fundraising consultant, Mallory Erickson, joins CEO and Little Bird Momma, Priscilla McKinney, on the podcast to discuss strategy work at the intersection of fundraising and marketing. Mallory Erickson is aimed at supporting non-profit leaders to change the way they lead and fundraise fundamentally. Through her signature framework, the Power Partners Formula™️, Mallory provides unique tools to help nonprofits fundraise more from foundations, corporate partners, and individuals. She has trained over 40,000 fundraisers using her unique win-win framework, which combines best practices from executive coaching, science-backed behavior design, and fundraising strategy. She is also the host of the What the Fundraising podcast.  In their conversation, Mallory and Priscilla unpack how to help people frame the idea of relevance and urgency, and how to clarify your message authentically through storytelling. Mallory also brings up human behavioral design and her studies under Dr. BJ Fogg. According to Mallory, “Fundraising, at its best, is us aligning our core identity and deep desires with the identity and mission and desires of the organization. It's a human coming together with a nonprofit and saying, ‘We both want to see this change being possible and we have different skills and assets to do that. I have some money. You have the skills to create change in the community. How do we come together and do that?'”  If there's a culture of philanthropy with your donors, then there needs to be a culture of fundraising inside of your organization. “And the very first step of that is that fundraising is not a bad word.” Positively brimming with actionable insight and fodder for a solid mindset shift, this episode is not one you want to miss!

RE-RELEASE CURATED BY:  Sara Hoshooley, Charity Shift Fundraising is all about mindset. And if you don't believe that, chances are actually that you need to work on your mindset. If you've heard me speak about my fundraising origin story, you'll know that I have loved fundraising right out of the gate, but I know that that's not the case for everyone. And so today you're going to hear from someone who hated fundraising and learned to love it by focusing on changing the mindset. Mallory Erickson, CEO & Creator of the Power Partners Formula, joins us in the podcast to discuss how you can change your mindset about fundraising and raise more money for your nonprofit. Myths that Mallory wants us to walk away from:Mindset has nothing to do with fundraising.  How we feel and think about fundraising ultimately impacts how we show up and the results that we see. We can overcome the barriers to fundraising success by reframing our mindset and developing new habits.Great fundraisers don't get rejected. Good fundraising is a job that involves regular rejection and it takes a lot of intentional building of resilience to be able to not internalize that rejection or make it about you, or have it relate to your stories about yourself that get in the way and keep you in a paralysis and perfectionist state.GAIL: four primary types of thoughts that hold you back from successful fundraisingGremlin or self-critic is the voice in your head that says  “I am not good enough. I am not smart enough. I am not pretty enough. I am not enough” which plagues all of us. It gets triggered in fundraising because fundraising is a job that involves regular rejections and it takes a lot of work to build up your resilience so that you don't take them personally.Assumptions This is the result of our belief that when something has happened before, we believe it's going to happen again. For example, one donor didn't give last year, now we think that they're not going to give this year. But in reality,  the data shows the exact opposite.Interpretations are the stories that we make up about someone's behavior that is not based on facts.  For instance, a donor does not respond to your email in 48 hours, and you make up an entire story about what is happening, how they feel about you, what they think about you, and if they're ever going to donate to your cause. We make these stories and hold on to them as if they were true, but in reality, they are not based on facts. Limiting beliefs are things that society puts on us that restrict our ability to think outside the box. The hundred percent model is a great example of a limiting belief, where we have been trained to think that there's too much money to overhead. This is simply the limiting belief that we are all continuing to perpetuate, even as fundraisers. However, once you begin to challenge these beliefs, they disappear. Resources from this EpisodeWhat the Fundraising PodcastPower Partners Formula The Good PartnershipCharity Shift is offering customized, End of Year Campaign Strategy packages for charities ready to raise more money than ever before this holiday season. We talked with Mallory Erickson, the tour-de-force behind What The Fundraising podcast and creator of the Power Partners Formula™, about the similarities between the isolated fundraiser and the isolated technologist at nonprofits. Spoiler alert: it’s all about the stigma associated with having highly-refined pieces of knowledge that create dependencies that aren’t entirely accounted for in how nonprofits operate and develop their culture and strategy. We uncover her “ah-ha” moment of breaking the silence of how nonprofit fundraisers feel about the work they’re doing, their fears and goals, and the journey it set her on that led to her business. This episode is a conversation about how we react to the work we’re doing and what it leads us to bring to the work itself: Mallory helps leaders unpick these reactions and assumptions and develop positive outcomes for their organizations. We also talked about the net effect of philanthropic and evaluative organizations that categorize nonprofit operations on how fundraisers (and technologists) approach their work and what are considered successful outcomes. Notably, how the “business as usual” we’ve been conditioned to expect is no longer serving us. Ending The Stigma is a must-listen conversation for fundraising and technology executives, organization leaders, and business partners that help the impact economy. Episode Shownotes

My guest today is Mallory Erickson, a fundraising coach who hated fundraising for most of her nonprofit career.  She had all the fears - imposter syndrome, feeling inauthentic and not up to the job.  And when it came to corporate partnerships, she didn't have the most positive impressions of the for-profit folks she was meant to be working with.  All that changed when she trained in habits, behavior and mindset.  She applied that to her work and completely reversed her experience and, more importantly, her results.  So much so that strategic corporate partnerships are now the cornerstone of her approach to financial stability.  Understanding what makes them truly strategic, is the key.   Find out more athttps://kevkhayat.com/ ( kevkhayat.com) and discover other episodes or https://bit.ly/NPSseason4 (register) for the live show athttps://nonprofitproblemsolver.com/ ( NonprofitProblemSolver.com) or catch them on https://bit.ly/kev-youtube (YouTube), https://bit.ly/kev-LinkedIn (LinkedIn) or https://bit.ly/join-kevs-fb-group (Facebook). Confidence is a tricky thing: it's simple to say, to talk about, and to identify, but confidence is difficult to reach, and it's even harder to hold onto. During today's Nonstop Nonprofit, Justin Wheeler, Funraise CEO and Co-founder talks to a fundraiser-turned-executive-coach whose confidence unlocked an almost 4X increase in her nonprofit's revenue. Justin's conversation with Mallory Erickson goes back to his time as a fundraiser. For context, while these days it's pretty common to follow loads of skilled specialists on social media, back then many fundraisers learned on the job... they weren't necessarily taught the stuff that Mallory brings to the table, and it's a shame—fundraising is so much easier when you view your nonprofit's value through a funder's lens.Speaking of value, that's the key to confidence we mentioned earlier. Hearing Mallory lay it out, you'll see that it's all connected: when the value your nonprofit offers aligns with a funder, the dynamics of your conversation are fundamentally shifted.Listen in as Mallory and Justin discover assets you never knew you had, smash the power dynamics of outdated fundraiser-funder relationships, and try on different lenses to reveal your true confidence as a fundraiser.P.S.
