Episode 29: The steps to getting the big dreams that seem ridiculously HUGE with Donna Campisi

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 2, 2020 9:08

I find myself a little hesitant about using the word ‘dreams,’ even though I did use it in my book titled ‘Turn Dreams into Reality.’ (a free eBook at HERE) When I think of dreams though, I sometimes have this image in my mind of a person sitting looking up at a cloud above their head with a wondering smile of hope for the image in the cloud…that often floats away, this I personally don’t think turns dreams into reality. Action is what makes it a reality and my experience shows that ‘baby steps’ is what gets you there in the long run…pun intended. Yes, we dream all the time and it broadens our imagination and have you ever noticed that most of our dreams while we sleep are distorted or exaggerated and seem ridiculous? I am mostly entertained by my sleep dreams, but I’m not talking about those dreams. We CAN have dreams in our life that seem ridiculously HUGE. I prefer to change this word to GOALS…it sounds more real to me. I speak of achieving goals all the time. Why? Because I personally like to help others achieve, YOU included, and it’s a buzz when I see it happen or receive letters.I enjoy seeing the growth in people reaching their goals too, as this doesn’t happen overnight or in an instant. That’s the mistake too many people make. They give up too soon! If you are familiar with My Story you’d know I survived a stroke when I was 7 and was unable to walk or talk. Later in life I set a challenge to complete a marathon in 2013, only able to run 30 tentative steps in 2012. The challenge was 30 steps to a marathon in 11 months, sounds a little crazy right? Even scary at first to me. BUT when I did it with the baby step method, it was achievable! Just as I made baby steps to learn to walk again way back when I was 7yrs old. So here is the baby step method. It’s making small achievable goals to get to your ridiculously HUGE goal. But I always say, the first step is self-belief. It is really important to believe you CAN, as you need to have a positive mind set all the way. The next baby step for me was training for a 5.3km fun run in Jan. 2013. Setting a time on a goal is important. This was a huge step for me, my very first physical challenge. I trained approximately 2 months for this. I completed my first baby step goal, receiving my very first medal! Remember to celebrate after each baby step achievement, it may not be a medal. It was a buzz, it gave me confidence to keep me going and enthusiastic about my next baby step. My mind set was. Paula Johnson is our guest today. Paula describes herself as a mix of boho hippie, spirited rebel and a regular Kiwi with a ‘can do’ attitude. At the young age of 29, Paula was diagnosed with early menopaue. This was the catalyst that set her on her journey, delving deep into the mental, emotional, the physical and the spiritual self. Finding meaning became her mission - Why? Why did this happen? And the even bigger question - why am I here? The consequence of that diagnosis at such a young age was also going to impact her long-term health. Looking after her heart and bones became paramount if she wanted to live a long, healthy life. This guided her to become interested in natural health and wellbeing which led her to train as a Bowen therapist and therapeutic massage, attending trainings in New Zealand, Australia and Bali. Paula is passionate about travel and making a difference in the lives of those less fortunate. She has been co-sponsoring a brother and sister in Bali for the past ten years, helping change the cycle of poverty within their family. Never thinking she would be a mother; these two young adults are now very much part of her life. When she’s not helping local clients out of pain and stress through her holistic bodywork practice, she’s a digital nomad, creating websites while travelling and house sitting. I asked Paula to be an author of Change is not a Scary Word, as I have seen her go through many changes in her life, and knew she would be a great contributor to this book. Paula is a Champion of Change, having reinvented herself many times over the years, she knows only too well that change is an inside job. She uses her experience to support and encourage others to follow their dreams. From blogging to being a published author in two collaborative books, CHANGE is Not a Scary Word and From the Ridiculous to the Sublime, and her very own memoir is underway (due out in October 2021). Episode 27: How are you selling yourself? with Donna Campisi

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 19, 2020 7:08

How are you selling yourself? It is important in business to be sales savvy if you have a business product or service to sell, don’t you? But this may be an issue in life also. How do you come across to others? Are we selling ourselves everyday anyway?Just to share a little of my background. I have a background in the sales industry, including roles such as sales consultant, sales trainer and business coach. What I notice initially when people step into a sales role, or have come to me for sales/business coaching, especially newbies, they have a fear or almost don’t want to admit their title or what they do. Why? Sales is not a swear word!We sell all the time without even noticing, so why do we have problems selling our business? Maybe it’s the ‘trying to hard syndrome’ or the ‘desperation’ factor especially when launching a new business. This usually doesn’t work. But I want to point out the sales techniques that come naturally to us, without trying too hard, we just need to be aware or reminded of the traits we already share. We sell ourselves all the time! We like to point out our positive traits in most initial meetings, right? I’ll use a few examples which you may connect with your bio in your ‘About Us’ page on your website. We naturally sell our positive points including our experience, credentials and what we can offer. Another example is on social media or even internet dating! There are other areas where we sell ourselves! Have you ever noticed when networking with introductions people are always selling themselves? Even a first date! We do it all the time, so why does it seem difficult in business? How are you carrying yourself? The way we move our body is very noticeable to others but maybe not ourselves. Are you moving with confidence? This includes posture, walk, stance and body language used toward our potential clients. What language are you using? I’m not talking about English, Italian or Spanish here, I’m talking language in relation to your client, your communication skills! Most of the time when I have trained or coached people in sales and business, they have initially rolled out a spiel that is almost like a script in fast forward speed which automatically loses their potential client, (and my attention), as they have not had a conversation, which includes listening to the needs of that person (a potential client perhaps). How genuine you are is very obvious to your client. Being authentic with our people is important when building...READ MORE HEREAs this is a short podcast episode today, and if you’re interested in working on further techniques to help your business or team, or even yourself, feel free to contact me at the ‘Contact’ page at ReadySetGoalpodcast.comAs I always say on your mark, ready set goal. Hi it’s great to be back on air bringing you this podcast. It’s been months since I have last been able to record an episode of Ready! Set! Goal! I have truly missed it and hope you will still make the time to join me and my awesome guests, and take me back after all this time. I should explain myself first for my absence. Firstly, it was technical issues that went on for a long period of time, back and forth, repairing, replacing equipment, with technical support helping me out, then I finally got that sorted after months of going back and forth. Then I experienced major noise issues recording from home, with builders next door creating more than the usual construction noise, along with singing and swearing and music turned up fully to wake the street…haha…so it wasn’t the greatest time for recording. So here we are, in a new location, happy days. Let’s do it! I have not been twiddling my thumbs though. I’ve been super busy with my new collaborative book I have produced, with nine other super awesome authors, who are leaders of change. If you’ve been following me as a subscriber to my awesome tribe, subscribe at DonnaCampisi.com or the Facebook page Donna Campisi-Speaker, Author, Adventurer & Podcaster. You would have seen the progress we have made and the announcement of our amazing authors. Getting busily distractedWow! Today has been a crazily busy day for me. Don’t get me wrong, it’s been productive. I am the type of person, before I go to bed, I put dot points in my diary for the next day. What are the dot points? Goals for the day! Big or small, it doesn’t matter. This morning was one of those days, I had one important point in my diary I wanted and needed to do….but I got distracted by the noise around me, the requests asked of me, the emails requesting answers, the phone calls, texts, Messenger beeps…it was all stuff I was pretty happy doinhg, I was getting through the day, being active and productive…maybe forgetting about lunch, until 4pm and snacking on a crumb…ok, so it was a few crackers, not quite a crumb. Maybe it’s a crumb in an Italian household… But the point is I was busily distracted. Yes, busily distracted!I realised it was 6pm AND I hadn’t even touched the point in my diary that was the important thing to do on my to do list for the day! None of the stuff I was doing was even on my list, but life just happens, yea? Does this ever happen to you? You find yourself serving others, answering questions that are important to others, solving problems that could have been solved by them, and they could have learnt from themselves, these maybe others who are important in your life, like your family, colleagues, boss, friends, etc. But you forget what your purpose was for the day, maybe even the year! Yes, the year! This brings me back to the beginning of this year! 2020, when everyone was excited about 2020. A new year, a new decade which often means new aims, goals, ideas, excitement, unknowns and so on, that everyone gets excited about. It’s exciting stuff! But then something happens. Exciting ideas and dreams are sometimes put aside, as we may get distracted, just like my day today! It can easily happen.Or perhaps it maybe something else that stops us from moving closer to our new aims, goals, ideas, excitement, and unknowns Some the things that stop us other than distractions, are facing fears, especially of the unknown, or having doubts of the changes we need to make, to reach that place we first set our heart on.This subject has been on my mind for sometime now, I have seen it with many people, and had many discussions about it, not only when coaching people, but just in everyday conversation. For instance: “Hi, how have you been?” “Oh, don’t get me started! I’ve been so busy doing this, this and this…I’ve hardly had a moment to myself to do this, this or this!” You know the conversation I’m talking about. So how do we expect to actually get to those new year goals, aims or dreams that we were so excited about...READ MORE HEREI will keep you up to date with what’s happening with our collaborative book on change maker here, and you can also see updated at my Facebook page Donna Campisi - Speaker, Author, Adventurer & Podcaster see the link in the show notes at readysetgoalpodcast.comTo contact Donna go to https://donnacampisi.com/contact/Feel free to share this podcast with someone who needs help to reach their goal.Kindle Edition eBook of The Unlikely Marathoner by Donna Campisi can be purchased from Amazon HEREListen to more episodes of 'Ready! Episode 22: Changing your direction to get to your goal with Donna Campisi

Play Episode Listen Later May 4, 2020 7:25

Changing your direction of how to get to your goal, is an even more challenging task than the actual goal was to begin with sometimes. But sometimes this is where we develop a more creative side of our self, that was always there, but we may not have used it as we felt there was no need to…we think, mostly, that the straight road is the easiest, fasted route to our end destination (aka Goal). I have mentioned many times in this podcast, and so have my awesome guests who have achieved their dream goal, the importance of enjoying the journey, and seeking opportunities that we may otherwise miss or not think about, as we are too stuck in our own world/zone that we miss the awesomeness around us that’s involved in reaching our goal, and can become part of the journey…your story. As you know by now, I love speaking with guests about their goals, but really delving into their stories of what or how they came to wanting that particular goal, and also how they reached it. I think the story within the goal is important to help motivate us more to stay on track in reaching our goal. However, when I say ‘stay on track’ I don’t necessarily mean the straight same track or road to get there, as mentioned at the beginning, this track may take a different direction, that can sometimes seem scary or give us uncertainty….that’s part of the game of life! So, how adaptable or flexible are you? How do you cope with change? Change can certainly be as I said, an uncertain maybe even scary path or time, especially when it is from circumstances out of our control. Do you like to have control, ALL of the time, are you a control freak perhaps? I’m not saying that’s a bad thing, it’s just that when we fall into a situation that is out of our control, how do you deal with it?Have you thought about all of the other options that are out there? If this is difficult, have you had conversations with others about this? Perhaps even a coach or mentor, partner, friend or family member. Or even someone you know who has achieved this same goal, or something similar. We have technology on our side, when it works, believe me I’ve had some problems more recently with technology myself…no phone or internet service. But I found areas in my life, to do with my goals that I could focus more on, that perhaps I didn’t make the time to focus on as much as I did when technology was working. It’s an example of changing direction, but still enjoying the journey along the way…. even if I don’t have full control of what was in my original plan to begin with. Yes, it’s been frustrating at times, but when I look at the bigger picture and realise that this is a portion of my journey that I will look back on, and say wow, look what I did with that tough, frustrating time, and how I got through it to reach the end goal! It’s all part of the journey and story of life. Episode 18: Sharing the Attitude of Gratitude with Donna Campisi

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 6, 2020 7:57

An important practise that is commonly forgotten, when going for goals or just in life in general, is the habit to show gratitude. I’ve had so much support and I’m still very grateful to people who gave me support in various areas throughout my life.Take my stroke to marathon goal for example, I’m forever grateful to my coaches for my physical training and their support. But I also had great support with encouragement from people who followed me, such as through social media, and letters from supporters. I had people create events for my fundraising goal, and people attended events that I created – I am super-grateful for that. I had businesses who sponsored me as well. So always show gratitude; I truly believe this should not be forgotten. For example, I show people gratitude by simply thanking them and letting them know how I truly appreciate them and their support, and how important their involvement has been within my projects. I also share this with others to let people know of their amazing support or the work they’ve put in, and help promote their skills. This is really important when going for your goals too. There will be individual, or groups that you across that will even just say something kind, to pick you up, when things may seem hard on that particular. It may be colleagues at your work place that may put in an extra effort to help you with a job that you are finding difficult, or to lower your workload. Or you may have a coach, sure you pay them, but also show gratitude by doing the action, whether that be what was asked of you or a simple thank you…even if you are having a down day. Be polite to the checkout person at your supermarket, I notice when I acknowledge that person and ask how their day is going, they usually respond with a smile, appreciate the acknowledgement, and do the best they can to help you. But this should come from a good place…. not with an expectation of getting something in return. At the end of a keynote speaking event, I enjoy it when people come up and share their stories with me. It’s awesome! I usually invite people to come up and talk to me and even share what their goal is, or if they’re struggling with something. At one particular event many years ago, two people came up to me, a mother and daughter, to say hi. I remember the mother saying to me, ‘My daughter and I were just talking about how people like yourself … who have been through some sort of struggle … we notice that they come out to be inspiring people. Why is that? What do you put that down to? Can you tell us why and how you’re like that?’I said to them, ‘Maybe it’s because we’re determined.’ Then I said straight after that, ‘It’s gratitude! I think the main thing is gratitude. Because we’re grateful for where we’ve come from to where we are now.’ I’m speaking for myself here, but I see it a lot in people who’ve been through adversity. But you may say, I’m in a really tough place, there’s no way I have anything to be grateful for. For example: Many business owners want to help everyone and anyone! But the majority of the time, that doesn’t work!’ I will demonstrate here how you can get past the start line, with a clear path and an ‘I can attitude.’There are many benefits you’ll get from this, but firstly, what’s important to you? Let me remind you… that this is your dream – it’s nobody else’s, you own it.Remember, this can be in business or a personal dream or goal. When you own it and have the clarity of what the goal is about, you gain certainty. You need to know when you’re going to start this goal, and know what solution you’re going to solve. Make a statement that’s specific about your goal, and the problem you are solving for yourself or even your clients/customers…. if this is biz related. When you make your statement, this gives you the certainty and confidence to move forward, which then gives you courage. For example: I have used this exercise in workshops I’ve conducted and seen the amazing shift in people’s realisation of the clarity they need to gain and get specific about with their goal. The exercise goes like this: I ask people to get in groups of 2. They usually have 5 minutes to do this exercise, with someone they don’t know. In this group of 2, there is Person A is the speaker, and person B is the listener.Person says the following: My name is:I learned from:So now I help people with:I do this by being:I love doing this as: Read more at https://donnacampisi.com/episode-16:-finding-clarity-with-your-goal-with-donna-campisi/And Please feel free to share your specific goal with me, by sending me a direct message at my facebook page https://www.facebook.com/DonnaCampisiSpeakerAuthorAdventurer/ I love hearing/or reading what you’re up to…If you find you’re really stuck on this topic of getting specific and finding clarity, feel free to contact me at https://donnacampisi.com/contact/ where I can coach you to reach your particular goal. The Baby Step method is found in my book, The Unlikely Marathoner http://www.theunlikelymarathoner.com/ or here for you, direct to my super awesome subscribers https://donnacampisi.com/the-baby-step-method/The Power is in Me…it’s in You too! ‘Move out of your comfort zone. You can only grow if you are willing to feel awkward and uncomfortable when you try something new.’ – Brian TraceyMoving out of our comfort zone is a major leap when going for your big goal, but this is where the real action begins for us to reach that big goal. Why? Well, it takes you to places you’ve never been to. It can be scary, but exciting too. When I’m facing a big challenge, people may ask, ‘Are you scared, Donna?’ And I’ve said at times, ‘Well, yeah, it’s a bit scary, but I’m excited too!’That’s what challenges are about. They help you to grow. And they’re invigorating, too. So, a positive challenge will propel you to move forward, rather than backward when getting out of your comfort zone.If you’re doing something the same all the time and you’re not getting anywhere with your goal, that’s when you have to make a decision and say, ‘What do I have to do differently?’ Maybe you have to make that scary call you’ve been avoiding in your business, or that conversation you’ve wanted to have with your boss to ask for that pay rise, or maybe you need, or maybe you just have to say no for a change, instead of saying yes? And so on, and so on…‘If you want something you’ve never had, then you’ve got to do something you’ve never done.’ – UnknownI find that when people do stay in their comfort zone, they get stuck or stay in the same spot. They’re not reaching their goal, because they stay in fear of the unknown. They don’t progress or move forward to reach their target. But I want you to reach that target, That’s the reason I’m addressing this, there are many excuses or reasons to avoid this tough topic.Science has found that a moderate level of uncertainty and anxiety can help people be ready for anything. People who are out of their comfort zones are better at multitasking and more aware of potential problems. Dr Stephen Josephson, a psychologist in New York City who has treated athletes, actors and musicians, has said: ‘Coaches and sports psychologists have always known that you don’t want your athlete to be relaxed right before an event. You need some ‘juice’ to go fast.’ Is that juice fear, nervous energy, or excitement perhaps? In the beginning, to move out of your comfort zone can be a huge, scary thing. When you make it a habit – to jump out and think outside the square to get to your goal – this is where the magic happens. When it comes to moving out of your comfort zone, I also advise seeking a mentor: someone who’s already done this particular goal, or something similar. You may not know anyone who has done what you want to do, and that can make it big and scary as well. But if you seek a mentor, that can be really helpful and get you charged.Ask around. These are the times where you say your goal out loud. Perhaps you don’t want to tell the whole world yet? Perhaps you just want to talk to close friends about it and ask them, ‘Do you know anyone who has done this?’ Maybe they’ll be able to help you, or put the word out for you.Read more of Episode 14 show notes HEREKindle Edition eBook of The Unlikely Marathoner by Donna Campisi can be purchased from Amazon HEREListen to more ‘Ready! Duncan’s life is full, but he sees himself as a pretty regular guy with a passion for his family and sport. He has a busy career and has worked in England, the Middle East and Africa. AND He’s also adventurous when it comes to sport – and he never turns down a sporting challenge. Duncan was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 1986 when he was 14 and since then, he’s calculated he probably has had over 36,000 insulin injections and 60,000 blood glucose tests. He knows first-hand how type 1 makes life and sport harder, but he’s positive and thinks - in fact - he is fitter for having it. Duncan takes his body, mind and type 1 to surprising extremes and in 2013 he ran six marathon’s in six days in Australia’s Simpson Desert. He’s done several more endurance races and adventures since then. He says he thrives on them and is better at them because of type 1 diabetes. He’s learned plenty from his experiences with Type 1 diabetes, that he’s passionate about sharing with others. He had mixed feelings when diagnosed, but he just got on with life and tried not to let it change him. In the early days there’s a lot to learn about nutrition, how to manage insulin and when to test your blood. But now, it’s just routine – it’s second nature. Duncan claims to feel fitter for having it than he would have been from not having diabetes. He exercises a lot, and is careful about what he eats, and more resilient from the extra challenges diabetes brings. Duncan has gone on to more long races, and staged running adventures. Each one pushes him to his limits, bringing out the best in him. He has stated: They take you to incredible highs and points on the race that almost crush you. Episode 12: How can I get past the ‘I Can’t’ attitude with Donna Campisi

How can I get past the ‘I Can’t’ attitude? All too often the words ‘I can’t’ can easily fall out of our mouths. If said too often, it can become an embedded belief that will never get you to that big goal you dream about. When you take this belief out of your mind, then you gain confidence and the courage to achieve. If we keep saying, ‘I can’t’, we actually tend to believe it after a while and the people around us do too; they’re not going to expect big things out of you, and neither are you!Instead, we can create a habit to ask ourselves, ‘How can I?’Have you ever noticed when someone asks you, ‘Can you do this?’ You’re either going to say yes or no. It’s just a one-word answer, isn’t it?What if someone asked, ‘How can you?’ These words are great! It’s an interesting question to ask, because it actually makes you think instead of just saying yes or no. It’s easy to say no and it’s easy to make excuses – but, ‘How can I? How can I do this? How can I do that? How can I achieve my big scary goal?’ This is what it’s all about. If there’s a big goal that you’ve been dreaming about and you’ve been either too scared or allowed someone to put it in your mind that it’s crazy, I understand. I’ve been there.Through my experiences and what I have achieved, I’ll share my insights, not just from what I’ve achieved, but also from struggles and tough times that I’ve had as well. It hasn’t all been sunshine and lollipops, as they say. Here, we’re going to learn new things about ourselves. When asking yourself, ‘Can I? Is it possible?’ a lot of people make excuses. Often, it’s either time or money stopping people achieving their big goals.Sound familiar? I’ve had those reasons too, believe me. But then I stopped to think, ‘Okay, surely I can find another way. How can I possibly afford to do this? How can I find the time to do this?’Two great questions. To find a solution, you need to think outside the box.The thing is, if you ask yourself ‘can I’ instead of ‘how can I’, you’re always going to dream; you’ll never achieve that big goal and live with regret until the day you die.We don’t want this to happen. I really want to help you by sharing my experiences, insights and steps for you to achieve your big, scary goal.Moving past the ‘I can’t,’ is an important mind shift to achieving your goal. Believing you can is the first step when beginning the Baby Step Method to achieve your goals. This is evident with many of our goals – some may seem like a crazy idea at first. But fixing in our mind that nothing could stop me from doing this, is the mindset we want, how much do you really want this? We can all easily come up with so many excuses, we’re experts at that! But do you want to be that person?‘Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t, you’re right.’ – Henry FordFocusing on your goal and not allowing other things to get in your way is a major path to success. But things in life will get in your way – that’s just life. We can come up with plenty of reasons to say, ‘This it’s all too hard, I can’t possibly do this.’ Continue reading show notes at: https://donnacampisi.com/ready-set-goal/You can also find more about this at TheUnlikelyMarathoner.comThe link to help you get started on your goal plan is at https://donnacampisi.com/the-baby-step-method/Listen to more ‘Ready! I was once asked in an interview about the chapter in my book that covers ‘Winning Language.’ He asked me: What does this mean to me?My response: It’s about how we speak to ourselves, do we speak to ourselves in a kind way?I always use the example especially when speaking at keynote events, I say ‘Be your best friend.’ People often look at me oddly, so let me explain. I often advise people to talk to themselves as if they were talking to their best friend. This may sound strange at first, but it helps get your mental and physical state off to a good start.‘You’re sounding a bit crazy, Donna.’ Maybe, but we talk to ourselves all the time. Those thoughts in your mind are like a number of voices in your head sometimes. When we think encouraging and motivating thoughts toward ourselves, then we see results in our ability to reach our big goal. What benefits does this positive language give you? You feel good. It really helps when you’re struggling and it motivates you to keep going. What would you feel if you didn’t do that? You’d feel down on yourself. You’d lose self-belief and confidence, creating negative energy. If you keep being so negative and down, people don’t want to be around you and that creates negative energy towards your big goal, and you’ll never get encouragement to reach your big goal. People will want you to stop going for it because they’ll see it as something that maybe isn’t a good thing for you. But you know it’s a great thing for you, because it’s a big dream that you’ve always wanted to achieve. So our self-talk is very important, because it’s with us every day.It makes you grateful. It reminds you to be kind to yourself and encouraging; sometimes we can be really hard on ourselves.Giving yourself rewards, celebrating and being kind in the way you talk to yourself – that’s what I mean by the winning language. Talk to yourself like you would to your best friend. This is an important point to get your mindset started on the right track! Be your best friend. You may say, ‘I don’t understand how to be my best friend, that doesn’t make sense.’ Think of the conversation you may have had with a good friend where they were struggling with something. What words of advice or encouragement did you give them? These words you need to give to yourself.Another example could be: of when I started to learn to run again after a childhood stroke and not running for 34 years. and then training for a marathon. I was being hard on myself, because I am the kind of person who likes to have things done yesterday and I can get impatient with myself at times. Anyway, there were days when I worked really hard, but still there were days when I would struggle, so it wasn’t always smooth sailing (especially at the beginning). I’d really get down on myself for slowing down to walk instead of running. But that was just the beginning. I would have these horrible thoughts in my mind, talking to myself. ‘Come on Donna, you’re being slack, this is too hard, you can do better than that surely…’ blah blah blah – criticizing myself. Sound familiar? When I thought about this and I had a conversation with my coach, he said to me, ‘You need to talk to yourself in an encouraging way Donna.’ I totally agreed, and changed the way my thoughts, my bad habits of putting myself down, or being hard on myself, the language I used! That’s what really helps you get to your goal, encouragement, yea? I understand not everyone is going to ...To check out the full show notes of this episode, simply go to readysetgoalpodcast.com

It’s that time of year again, where most of us think of new year resolutions. and set ourselves bigger and better goals, for the new year ahead.I love hearing people’s aspirations, and reasons for making their promises, but sometimes it’s easy to let these high aims fall aside and get distracted. Before you make huge goals for 2020, I’d like to encourage you to make time to reflect, and be grateful for the year you have just lived. Learning from experiences whether they are cheerful memories, or others that you now know you could have handled differently, will help lead you to your new goal.Ask yourself:What can I do to make a difference? What positive change can I make? How can I help? These are questions that are great to consider when making plans for the new year ahead. Most of the time we seem to make a new year resolution or goal based around our own personal needs or wants, for example: giving up smoking, exercising more, losing 10 kilos, etc. But unfortunately, a high percentage of these promises aren’t kept for too long. Why is that? Exactly, it’s all about the WHY!If you really want to give up smoking, ask yourself why? If you really want to exercise more, ask yourself why? If you really want to lose those 10 kilos, ask yourself why? When you dig deep, also ask how will this benefit me AND others around me? This is where you can really achieve results when keeping yourself accountable, to yourself and others who are important to you.Have you noticed when it comes to our own needs, we tend to put ourselves second, as opposed to those we love and care about? It’s common, because we actually care about others. This isn’t a bad thing!Maybe if you make your reason why you want to achieve your goal for yourself, but also for others, and remind yourself how it will benefit both parties, this will keep you on track. An example: “I want to exercise so I’m fit and healthy to play with my children and be a good role model for them.” Awesome! This reason why is for both you and your children.I’m not suggesting to forget about you, but when you make your reason ‘Why’ about something or someone at a deeper emotional level, things start happening for the long run, and your goal is achieved!Your reason could be “I want to exercise so I’m fit and healthy and lose 10 kg so I gain confidence in myself to step up in my job, go out on dates, meet people, be happyBut this is about starting and staying on track. To keep you on track, I recommend to acknowledge the following (you can write this down if you like):What have I learned through the tough times in 2019?What is the theme for me in 2019, and will that theme or behaviour keep me on track in 2020?What am I grateful for in 2020?What/who will help me grow further with my new goal in 2020?What will I continue to do? As this is what gives me positive results.I will choose my support buddies wisely in 2020. Who are you surrounding yourself with?Sometimes we are all get up and go about a new year with new year goals, believe me, I love that! But remember to acknowledge what you already have, and ask these questions of yourself to get you started and keep you on track. To help you further with keeping you on track, go to: http://www.theunlikelymarathoner.com/Ready! On this episode I spoke with Tom Allwright, who shares his story of inspiring others with his adventures, and how he became a game changer. Tom played AFL for the Geelong Cats before succumbing to an injury, which forced him to retire. This could be seen as an unfortunate story, but speaking with Tom, it’s proof of how you can turn your life around into an awesome adventure of following your passion. We were lucky to have the opportunity to speak with Tom, as before he left Australia for Nepal, to open a school that his team had built after it was severely damaged from the earthquake in 2015. Tom started Adventure Abroad to inspire people to get up and do the things that inspire them. He imparts this desire by providing a platform for unique adventure opportunities and experiences. Tom grew up on a small farm in central Tasmania, where he’d always had a passion for sport. He enjoyed rowing through high school and was selected to represent Tasmania before being drafted into his favourite AFL team, the Geelong Cats. Consecutive knee injuries cut short Tom’s dream of playing AFL in 2010. During this time, he also completed his Commerce and Law degree. While Tom was studying, he started a health and fitness business in Melbourne. This is where he found a passion for adventure travel. At the age of 26, Tom set up his first office in his grandma’s spare bedroom and founded Adventure Abroad. Now, Adventure Abroad are partnered with some of the world’s leading brands. Tom provides purpose with many of his quirky adventure expeditions by linking in with charity organisations from around the world to raise funds for a common goal. Adventure Abroad aim to help raise in excess of $1,000,000.00 in 2019. The success of Adventure Abroad, which includes having a long lunch at the North Pole, driving tuk tuk's through the Himalaya's in India (with celebrity guests) and forging partnerships with global luxury brands has not happened by chance. Every quarter, Tom sits down and writes 5 goals that he wants to achieve in both personal life and also in business.Tom has completed two Ironman events, five marathons and led expeditions all around the world with this format. Tom lives in Hobart, Australia. You will certainly be inspired by Tom’s drive and enthusiasm, in achieving his goals. On this episode I want to ask you a question? Is fear stopping you from achieving your goals? The first step is always the hardest. Remember the time when we first learnt to walk as a toddler. We were curious, a little uncertain, we stood up, fell down, then stood up again, and then fell down. With excited and encouraging people around us, cheering us on, even if we did stumble along the way…no matter how much time it took. Eventually, we finally walked on our own! Our little legs went running one after the other…we showed no fear, and such excitement! When facing a goal with a challenge, as adults, we tend to show resistance, fear, doubts, uncertainty, questioning our capabilities, and listening to others who DON’T cheer us on …even if we do stumble at times! When facing a challenge, or a big scary goal, I believe it’s achievable when broken into ‘baby steps’ and having the right mindset. This is how I achieved my stroke to marathon challenge. Only initially able to run 30 wobbly steps (from the effects of a childhood stroke) to completing a full marathon (with 11 months of training). My goal achieved! With the coaching that I had, having the right mindset, not allowing the doubters to get in my way, choosing the right cheer squad, getting out of my comfort zone, and using The Baby Step Method, to move toward my goal, the results were awesome! Your goal is achievable, doing the baby step method, you will reach the end goal…and I’m not just talking about running, remember! I’m talking about your goal. I am finding this to be a common theme in my interviews on my podcast, with amazing goals achieved in all areas of life. The Baby Step method is found in my book, The Unlikely Marathoner http://www.theunlikelymarathoner.com/ or here for you, direct to my super awesome subscribers https://donnacampisi.com/the-baby-step-method/ When I speak at events I go through these steps in more depth, however here on my podcast I will be sharing steps along the way, so stay tuned, there’s more to come. It’s not always easy, but big scary goals aren’t meant to be easy. There’s no such thing as can’t’ Go make that first step: The first step is to believe you can. Listen to more ‘Ready! Set! What a question. We were told to write three points. This was an exercise a group of us were asked to do.I could see a few people having to think for a while, but mine came straight to me as I scribbled it on the card.I found this card a few years back, as I was moving out of my apartment, it made me smile as I could see that I was achieving this through my actions since I began my Run Donna Run journey, my keynote speaking, my books, blogging, adventure programs and now my podcast. My card said this: ‘My purpose is to inspire, motivate others by telling my story. I want to make a difference. Give others an A-HA moment!’This has been a big goal of mine to write my book and share my story to people so I could inspire others with my story, and now share other people’s stories too… on my podcast.Ever since I found this card, I have kept it close and stuck it (every year) inside the cover of my diary.I’m sharing this with you, not to just brag, but to ask you the same question!
