Self worth is something that many of us struggle to fully grasp. Despite our upbringings it is one of the T.H.I.N.G.S. that can be either completely elusive or too heavy to fully carry. In Episode 20 my guest, author, entrepreneur, father of three, devoted husband, business owner, motivational speaker, and recovering addict Jeremy Van Winkle shares his journey of "Overdosing and Dying to Overcoming and Thriving". In this powerful message he shares how he has recreated and redesigned his life after realizing at a pivotal time in his life that he needed to basically "Sell Himself to Himself". He needed to make changes so he could live the life he desired and was worthy of. Jeremy shares about how his low self worth brought him to a tipping point with his young family and when he decided he wanted to live his life with a vastly different trajectory than where it was headed. In the last three years Jeremy has rebuilt relationships but first started with himself. He shares about the power of believing in yourself, forgiveness, and the transformative power that we all have if we are willing to make the decision to walk a different path. I find myself a little hesitant about using the word ‘dreams,’ even though I did use it in my book titled ‘Turn Dreams into Reality.’ (a free eBook at HERE) When I think of dreams though, I sometimes have this image in my mind of a person sitting looking up at a cloud above their head with a wondering smile of hope for the image in the cloud…that often floats away, this I personally don’t think turns dreams into reality. Action is what makes it a reality and my experience shows that ‘baby steps’ is what gets you there in the long run…pun intended. Yes, we dream all the time and it broadens our imagination and have you ever noticed that most of our dreams while we sleep are distorted or exaggerated and seem ridiculous? I am mostly entertained by my sleep dreams, but I’m not talking about those dreams. We CAN have dreams in our life that seem ridiculously HUGE. I prefer to change this word to GOALS…it sounds more real to me. I speak of achieving goals all the time. Why? Because I personally like to help others achieve, YOU included, and it’s a buzz when I see it happen or receive letters.I enjoy seeing the growth in people reaching their goals too, as this doesn’t happen overnight or in an instant. That’s the mistake too many people make. They give up too soon! If you are familiar with My Story you’d know I survived a stroke when I was 7 and was unable to walk or talk. Later in life I set a challenge to complete a marathon in 2013, only able to run 30 tentative steps in 2012. The challenge was 30 steps to a marathon in 11 months, sounds a little crazy right? Even scary at first to me. BUT when I did it with the baby step method, it was achievable! Just as I made baby steps to learn to walk again way back when I was 7yrs old. So here is the baby step method. It’s making small achievable goals to get to your ridiculously HUGE goal. But I always say, the first step is self-belief. It is really important to believe you CAN, as you need to have a positive mind set all the way. The next baby step for me was training for a 5.3km fun run in Jan. 2013. Setting a time on a goal is important. This was a huge step for me, my very first physical challenge. I trained approximately 2 months for this. I completed my first baby step goal, receiving my very first medal! Remember to celebrate after each baby step achievement, it may not be a medal. It was a buzz, it gave me confidence to keep me going and enthusiastic about my next baby step. My mind set was. Knowing your worth and value and being able to articulate it is an important life skill that will open many opportunities for you. Too many people complain of not being paid or valued enough, yet they don’t know how to articulate and negotiate their worth. In both the business and the professional world, you’ll often find people who have a tremendous set of skills, yet they can’t tell their story or negotiate for compensation worth their skills or value. For instance, in an interview setting, the interviewers will assess your worth based on how well you sell yourself.Whenever you are negotiating your value, you should always present any type of skills, qualifications, and facts that make the other party see all that you are bringing to the table. Never sell yourself short or feel shy about stating facts about you even when you think they may not be as relevant to the position you are looking for.Once you get a position, Eddie and I believe that you have to outperform your role to be in line for a promotion and more responsibilities, thereby increasing your value and placing you in a good position to negotiate for more money.Key TakeawaysTaking responsibility and not outsourcing it (12:01)What are you doing to be in practice of something that will make you better (15:01)How to negotiate your value and sell yourself (18:47)An interview is a two-way street (22:02)Value is invisible; you have to name your price (34:19)You have to outperform your role to be in line for more responsibilities (46:50)What are you willing to do to have the things that other people don’t have (48:06)Keep adding tools to your tool belt to increase your value (50:26)It not always about the compensation, sometimes it what you are becoming (50:54)Additional Resources:Janelle's website: JanelleCopeland.comJoin the PUSH Facebook GroupThe Push Podcast's official website: thePushPodcast.com--If you haven't already, it would be amazing if you could head over to Apple Podcasts And leave a rating and review on the podcast!

Episode #94: Leadership & Vulnerability with Amy WineAs leaders of our businesses, our families, and our communities, it can feel very challenging to be vulnerable. But vulnerability is a very powerful state to cultivate and it can have profound effects on both our personal and business growth. In this episode I sit down with my sweet Texan friend Amy Wine, who is a marriage counselor and the host of the podcast, Marriage on Fire. Amy helps couples and families to communicate effectively so they can enjoy more fulfilling relationships and a more joyful life as a result. Amy boldly puts her own personal life out there every week on her podcast, so she knows what it's like to open yourself and your personal life up for all to see and potentially criticize. But Amy hasn't always been the courageous leader she is today, and she and I both open up about how we've faced hard times when it comes to letting people see our imperfections. We talk about the importance of being vulnerable with our clients and supporters, our teams, and within our families. We both share examples of ways in which we've done that. We also share some messy missteps too. After all, what's an episode on vulnerability without the messy stuff, right? I also open up about my own marriage and some of the struggles I have had being vulnerable in my most intimate relationship. Some of our favourite nuggets from this episode: "How can I let them see me fail, when I'm the person who helps them achieve?""80% of the time... I'm going to give them the very best tools and strategies. The other 20% of the time, they're going to see the real.""If you have an opinion, you are going to risk pissing someone off."Links mentioned in this podcast:Amy Wine Counseling https://amywinecounseling.com/Marriage on Fire Podcast https://amywine.com/welcome-to-the-marriage-on-fire-podcast/Michael Hyatt https://michaelhyatt.com/Lianne's “I cried in my car" video on IG https://www.instagram.com/tv/CALZtWQBuM9/Amy Porterfield's Online Marketing Made Easy PodcastEpisode #106: Are you Repelling or Attracting Your Potential Customers https://www.amyporterfield.com/2016/04/106-repelling-attracting-potential-customers/The Business of Thinking Big PodcastEpisode #62: The Fear of Selling Yourself with Tarzan Kay https://www.liannekim.com/blog/62Marriage Sparks https://marriagesparks.net/Follow Amy on IG @marriagesparks https://www.instagram.com/marriagesparks/Visit Amy on Facebook @marriagesparks https://www.facebook.com/marriagesparksYour Best Fall Ever – Wednesday, September 2nd Register now at mamasandco.com/fall https://www.mamasandco.com/fall

Episode 80: Letting Ourselves Be Big with Natalie RuskinIf you've ever felt like you're not stepping into your full power and potential, this conversation will truly resonate with you. In this episode, I speak with my incredible client Natalie Ruskin, who is a life coach helping moms live their mission more fully and with integrity, without burning out. Natalie speaks about how she felt called to serve moms to play big in their lives, and yet struggled with fully stepping into that role. She shares how she once struggled with an eating disorder and body image issues, and how it was difficult for her to speak from those scars, for fear that her audience would see those flaws and judge her for them. And yet once she did own that journey, how powerful that has been for her as a leader. We discuss the concept of "growth" and how important it is to allow ourselves to experience different kinds of growth, especially during this global crisis of COVID-19. She also shares a few simple yet effective mindfulness tools to help us create, as she says, "calm at will". We also discuss the role of faith in our personal journeys. I got chills when Natalie talked about how she gave herself "permission to be unapologetically me" and put herself out there. This is a very unique and spiritual discussion, but a very important one. And we even have a few laughs along the way. I hope you find value in it. Episode 71 - How I Took My Business OnlineIn this episode, I walk you through the major steps I took to take my business online. In the early days I did a lot of things "in person", but very quickly I realized that I'd be able to help more people if I took my efforts online.I focus on two main areas: 1) how I reached people online (digital marketing) and 2) how I served people online (virtual offers). When it came to digital marketing, I used to struggle hard. I clung to in-person speaking events because it felt easier to me than doing "webinars" which scared me to death. But I learned how webinars worked and I got my first one up and into the world, and it was a game-changer for me. I also walk you through the other ways in which I reached people digitally and I share all the platforms I used (and what I still use today).I then walk you through how I deliver my different services online, from my 1-on-1 and group coaching programs, memberships to online courses... I explain how they all work in my business and the tools we use to execute each one. It's now more important than ever that we learn how to reach and serve people online. If you have been resisting this stuff, we simply can't afford to do that anymore. And trust me... it's all a lot easier than you think. If you've been putting off building that email list or trying webinars, this episode will be the kick in the pants you may need. And, don't forget to join us at Business Bootcamp Virtual Conference. ‘The Art of Selling Yourself’ is a podcast about the art of self-promotion and success that reviews and analyzes research conducted by Piers Dudgeon and Valerie Jennings on 55 men and women who have been outstandingly successful. The result of the research is uncanny in so far as not only positive but also negative factors account for success in the lives of these people, and thus for example anxiety is felt as a propellant rather than retardant force. The research also clearly indicated that going for success in life comes from validating one’s own personal style rather than imitating the style of another successful person. Generally, successful people believe that they ‘can do it’ and this is their unique advantage for this belief is one of the rare positive self-fulfilling prophesies that exist in the world of business.

Part One of ‘The Art of Selling Yourself, Collaborating and Becoming an Author of Influence’   When it comes to becoming an influencer in the space, you need to build relationships, and that involves collaborating effectively. There are so many ways to play together, like highlighting someone in your newsletter. Many people don't understand that collaboration is happening around the world. It's one thing to attend events because you're interested in connecting with the speakers. It's another thing to participate in events and do business with the CEO's right after. Open your eyes to the possibilities to serve others.   Continuously evaluate how you can maximize value.  You want to set both parties up for a prosperous, long-term collaboration. And, this is where many businesses fall short.  Collaborating is simply a way of thinking about your current relationships in a different way and looking to the outside to form new connections to drive significant results.   “If you have an event coming up, that’s a great way to collaborate with someone.” — Brian K Wright (16:59-17:37) Imagine expanding your customer base just by making one meaningful connection. You can become a person of influence when you have the right offer and know how to sell yourself. And, by attending events, you can build an instant human connection quicker than you could over the phone or online.    Part Two of ‘The Art of Selling Yourself, Collaborating and Becoming an Author of Influence’   If you've been through something, chances are someone else has been through that too. Or might be going through it now. And if you're wondering, should I write my book or create this video? The longer you put off writing your book or creating something, the longer that someone who needs you doesn't get to experience what you offer. "Successful and wealthy people are those who are always creating something." — Brian K Wright (24:03-24:11) Successful entrepreneurs understand that challenges are lessons and opportunities to connect more with others. Sharing those stories opens up the floodgates to other opportunities. So, go out there and sell yourself, collaborate, and become an author of influence. The possibilities are endless. How to Get Involved Brian K Wright is hosting a virtual summit on January 29-30 called Authorpreneur Live. This event will help people write, market, and leverage their books to create more opportunities in their businesses. Adam started out as an electrical apprentice while in college pursuing an electrical engineering degree. After 20 years in construction management, he decided to make the leap to consulting, as a way to give back to the construction and contracting community. He attributes his decision to make this transition into consulting, in part, to The Consulting Success System — How to Become a Successful Consultant. Adam has now been growing Ascent Consulting for three years. He calls these years a time of accelerated growth, a greater depth of understanding and a time to hone his skills of understanding as a consultant deliver and sell value and deliver top-quality projects to his clients. On this episode of The Consulting Success Podcast you’ll learn how to effectively grow your business in your area of expertise, how to transition from fee-based to a value-based pricing, and how to recognize when it’s time to start sharing your workload with employees so that you can continue focusing on the work that you do best.   Don’t Know What You’re Doing? Start Here. Successful consultants like Adam Cooper have been able to successfully navigate the path to consulting success by taking advantage of The Consulting Success System — How to Become a Successful Consultant, which you can learn more about here on the Consulting Success website. Adam is one of over 5,000 consultants around the world that have used our products to land more clients, earn a greater income, and streamline their consulting businesses to enjoy more time-off. Adam claims that when he started out, he didn’t know exactly what he was supposed to be doing or how he was going to do it. By taking advantage of our system and coaching program he was able to establish his path, improve his proposals, and get an advantageous head start to his consulting business. You can find the link to The Consulting Success System below, and learn more about how this system can help you take your consulting business to the next level.   Selling Yourself as a Consultant Prior to starting Ascent Consulting, Adam worked as a project manager for several large national construction companies throughout the United States. He was responsible for managing materials, labor, subcontractors, budgets, and more, but after 20 years in the construction business, he decided that it was time to make a change. Two of the greatest challenges that he initially faced as a new consultant were learning how to sell himself to clients, and how to price his work. Pricing is often one of the greatest hurdles that consultants have to overcome. Initially you may find yourself, like Adam, pricing out your time, rather than the value that your work is bringing to your clients. You’ll want to listen to Adam’s story as he explains how he figured out the best way to make the shift from time-based to value-based pricing.   One of the first things he did to help overcome this hurdle and correctly price his work was to take advantage of the Accelerator Coaching course that is available here on the Consulting Success website. He also read books including The Consulting Bible, that helped him learn how to sell value instead of time, and how to have sales and value-based conversations with clients upfront. Early on, Adam would have conversations with his clients based on the budget that they had, and then create an appropriately sized project from there. Now he knows that the first conversation he needs to have with his clients is what kind of value they will gain by taking on a project, and then to proceed from there to structure a deal that will deliver the value that they are seeking. Listen to our conversation to hear more about how you can make this approach work for you, too.   Trial and Error will Lead You to Six-Figure Projects When Adam wanted to start the value-based pricing model, he didn’t know exactly how to make it work best for him. He was reading consulting books and taking consulting courses, but he still had a lot to learn. He was getting used to hearing “no,” a lot. Adam realized he had to learn how to price his work in a way that was fair to his clients, and made sense for him as the consultant.   It is also essential to develop a working relationship with your clients. Assessment projects and limited-scope projects are a great way to build their trust and confidence in the work that you can do for them. You can start out with assessment projects, which might be worth $4,000 to $6,000. Next you can offer limited-scope projects, which can be worth up to $30,000 or $40,000.  These smaller projects are the ones that build a foundation of trust and greater confidence with your clients. They will see the value that your work is bringing to their company through increased sales opportunities, better employee morale, increased profitability, or well-designed marketing. The value of your contributions to their organization will be apparent in these smaller projects, and those small projects will lead to the bigger six-figure projects.   Don’t Give Up on Value Pricing It can be extremely discouraging for any consultant to hear the word “no,” but getting rejected once, twice, or even a dozen times, is not a valid excuse for giving up. Adam shares how he turns those rejections into learning opportunities, starting with going back to the businesses and asking them what he can do differently next time. An initial rejection from a company does not always mean that they have no interest in doing any business with you ever again. Often it simply means that something needs to be reworked so that things makes better sense for your client. You’ll want to hear how exactly he forms his questions so that he can improve his proposal and approach, to turn a rejection into another successful project.   Another essential tip to helping yourself through hearing the ‘nos,’ is to surround yourself with people who want to see you be successful. If you are truly committed to switching over to value-based pricing, you have to take the time to figure out exactly how it will work for you. Adam explains that he wasn’t willing to give up, but that he needed a support system to help him get over this steep learning curve. You’ll probably recognize at least one of the names that he mentions in the network of colleagues and friends that helped him get the success he was looking for.   Expand Your Staff to Maintain Your Free Time As your business grows, you will have to decide how much time you want to commit yourself to getting the work done. Chances are you didn’t leave a 40-hour workload behind to take on a 60-hour workload in your consulting business. As your projects and clients increase, it may be worth it to bring on employees to help lighten your task list, and help your business grow. Just nine months into getting his business up and running, Adam decided to bring additional help on to help him with the ever-increasing work that he was facing. Ascent Consulting is now a business of three, and Adam explains the various ways that his staff help him get his work done and his clients satisfied. He also shares two ways that he knew it was time to bring in help.   First, maintain a sense of scale-ability. You have to be realistic about the vision that you have for your consulting business, and your ability to get it there yourself. Adam knew that his company would only be able to grow so big if he kept working at it alone. For him, that was when it was time to bring in additional help. If you want to take on bigger and better projects than you can handle independently, then it will be worth it to increase your staff size so that your business dreams can be realized.   Second, Adam refers to an exercise that he and I worked on together, to help him identify the most valuable activities that he could be focusing on. He refers to it as the ‘10s’ activity. If you break down all of the tasks that must be completed in your business into their dollar value, you will see that some tasks are more valuable than others. Tasks that are worth $10 or $100 are the ones that can be delegated to someone else, so that you can focus on the tasks that are worth $1,000, $10,000, or more. By freeing up your schedule to dedicate more time to the most valuable tasks, you are taking a great step toward securing your company’s greatest success. If you are trying to convince yourself that you can do everything in your business by yourself but are constantly drowning in menial tasks, you will want to be sure to listen to Adam as he details how this exercise has worked for him in finding greater success at Ascent Consulting.   Schedule Down Time for Yourself and Your Clients Every consultant wants to get their business to the point that they can enjoy some down time, and on this episode of The Consulting Success Podcast, you’ll hear a variety of ways that Adam has made sure to take care of himself. From running and golfing to updating his website just for fun, Adam seems to have found the way to maximize his work-life balance. But he also shares great tips for turning work into pleasure by incorporating networking and relationship building into fun, starting with a monthly poker night with his clients. If that sounds like the kind of relationships that you are aiming to build with your clients, then you won’t want to miss out on his tips for scheduling time for fun. You’ll hear all about this and more on this episode of The Consulting Success Podcast with Adam Cooper.   Key Takeaways: [:23] An introduction of Adam and how he transitioned from project manager to consulting. Landing Your Next Six-Figure Project with Adam Cooper

Work Your Biz Like A Boss
Why Introverts Are Genius at Sales!

Work Your Biz Like A Boss

Transcript:When you hear the word “extrovert,” you might think of someone who is the life of the party and a social butterfly. Introvert might bring to mind someone that is quiet, shy, and loves books and solitude. When you think of an extroverted salesperson, we often picture the pushy car salesman that is overly aggressive and sleazy. In fact, most of us don’t even think of an introverted salesperson! But being an extrovert or introvert has nothing to do with any of this. The differences are AN EXTROVERT DRAWS ENERGY FROM BEING AROUND PEOPLE and AN INTROVERT DRAWS ENERGY FROM SOLITUDE. Both can love people but the amount of time spent in social situations is different. Introverts must have down time from people and social engagement. It’s rare that anyone is 100% introvert or extrovert. Most fall in the middle or display a mixture. Personality Styles ImpactLet’s briefly touch on each personality style using DISC.D: Dominant, straightforward, outspoken. I: Influencer, extroverted, motivational.S: Stable, diplomatic, tactful.C: Conscientious, accurate, certain. Both D and I can be extroverted, especially if a combination of both. C and S are introverted and even more so if a combination of both. Here’s where it gets interesting. A DI and IS combo will tend to be more extroverted. The DI combo can be quite intense. The IS combo can also be intense but is double people focused. The DC combo will tend to be more introverted than the DI. I am a DCI combo, which means I’m straightforward, bold, and can be aggressive, but I also have enough C that I love to observe, people watch, and listen to people and form solutions to problems. With the I part of my personality, I can flip a switch and be outgoing, fun, and work a room but HONESTLY THAT IS QUITE STRESSFUL FOR ME. Once I’m done with social events in which I have to switch on the I, I need time to decompress with quiet and rest. The only exception is when I teach. Teaching and training energizes me. ““Quiet people have the loudest minds.” ” — Stephen Hawking My favorite combination for salespeople is SI or SC. S’s are the salt of the earth and love people but they are stable, calm, and non-emotional. Basically the people you want to share your life story with! The SI combo has the people loving aspect and can be a lot of fun. You just want to be around them. But it’s not overwhelming because the S is dominant over the intense I.The SC combo is an introvert for sure but the C part loves to listen for knowledge and information to be accurate and certain but the S adds the aspect that they’ll have your best interests in mind. Even CS combo is great too but a C will be more task focused especially if a CD or DC.Strengths of Introverts:1. COMPOSED. Bring a calming and comfortable influence putting clients at ease vs. aggressive people that evoke distrust and annoyance. An introvert comes across more honest and less salesy even if the extrovert is honest and truly cares! However, DON’T BE SO CALM that you come off as shy or less confident. People want confident and competent salespeople. 2. NON-EMOTIONAL. Introverts are not aggressive, emotional, or push hard for a sale. Instead they provide facts, identify problems and/or the needs of client by listening, and then offers solutions. They also focus on the product or service not themselves, which is crucial for sales success.C’s will need to be cautious of offering too many details overwhelming certain personalities like the D and I. 3. RELATIONAL. Introverts are interested in building long-term mutually beneficial relationships instead of the SINGLE SALE. They display empathy, patience, and gratitude. They understand that it’s easier to work with existing clients than getting new ones. They come across as genuinely caring because they do!4. LISTEN WELL. Introverts are great listeners and actually interested in what clients have to say. This is THEIR GREATEST STRENGTH. They don’t have a premade script but instead listen to clients explain what they’re dealing with or the problems they have and what really matters. They then ask great questions for more information and then provide RESOURCEFUL solutions. In fact, 2/3 of the meeting will be discussion and questions instead of a sales pitch. THEY KNOW DOMINATING THE CONVERSATION WON’T UNCOVER THEIR CLIENT’S NEEDS AND THEY DON’T ASSUME THEY KNOW THEM. Extroverts who tend to talk too much set of the BS meter in others and come off as narcissistic, not being genuine, and not really concerned about them. Most don’t find unrefined extrovert salespeople that talk, joke, and laugh too much charming and will avoid or tune them out. 5. They do their homework and know their business, service, and product. Sales Have ChangedIn the old days when cold calling was the name of the game, salespeople had to be: “Everybody likes to buy, but nobody likes to be sold to” — Unknown 1. Intruding to get their FOOT IN THE DOOR.2. Pitching to PERSUADE POTENTIAL CLIENT3. Persisting or BEING PUSHY.Today an EFFECTIVE salesperson must:1. Research to UNDERSTAND CLIENT.2. Listen to UNDERSTAND CLIENT’S NEEDS.3. Respond or ADAPT TO IDENTIFY NEEDS.Tips from ExtroverstEven if introverts tend to be better salespeople (based on research), there are some tips they could use from extroverts.1. Learn to enjoy being around people. If you don’t like people, that is communicated non-verbally. I trained myself to like people. You can too. LOL2. Be animated and expressive. This can be hard for an extrovert but really just using some hand gestures and showing a passion for your product or service goes a long way.3. Learn how to small talk. I HATE SMALL TALK. It’s intimidating, boring, and exhausting. But it builds rapport. I’ve found that as I developed the skill to be genuinely interested in people (I know it sounds horrible), I was better able to engage in small talk. The Best ComboA study conducted at Wharton School of Business by professor Adam Grand discovered that those in the middle of extro and intro scale were the MOST SUCCESSFUL SALESPEOPLE. You can develop CHARISMATIC SKILLS. Some are naturally charismatic but everyone can learn to be to a degree that creates rapport with your client.Tips Based on Personality StyleDI’s need to calm before the meeting. When I know I’m meeting with an S or C client, I schedule extra time, slow down, and calmly interact listening more than anything. If you’re an I, you need to avoid SELLING YOURSELF. I’s love appreciation and recognition but you’re not there to get that. Focus on the product or service and your customer. DC’s can be very intimidating and quite frankly “jerk-ish.” And I’m a DC. I cringe when I see a DC or CD combo enter a room. They hardly smile and interact. SMILE! Engage.SC or CS you need to practice more confidence and interaction in social settings. I teach this in my course, but creating a story toolbox and visualizing a small talk exchange before you go to event is helpful.C’s must beware of overwhelming people with too many details about product or service.Tips for Extroverts1. Don’t wing it. Sometimes you’ll have to but know your business and do your research. 2. Don’t spotlight and sell yourself.3. Don’t talk too much.4. Ask questions not pitch script.5. Listen for important information needed to help your client. Don’t have your answers pre-scripted where you miss what they’re trying to tell you. 6. Don’t view your client as one more check. They can feel that.7. Think long-term. Nurture that relationship. Follow up and follow through. If you do so, you’ll create a referral engine and not have to hunt for customers. click here to build trust with your client in 10 minutes or less

On this episode, we review the 2014 thriller Nightcrawler, Directed by Dan Gilroy and starring Jake Gyllenhaal.  The film follows enterprising psychopath Lou as he scouts the nocturnal underbelly of Los Angeles looking for opportunity. After being inspired to become a 'Stringer'; filming urban drama for local news stations, Lou's talent for exploiting tragedy garners him fame and fortune on the LA morning news circuit. But without empathy or conscience to temper his ambitions, he soon crosses the line between neutral observer and active participant.  We discuss the portrayal of psychopathy and how this personality type is perfectly suited to news media, where exploitation is the very currency of the industry. The character of Lou finds himself at home amongst carnage and calamity, and has no inhibitions about manipulating both people and situations to his own advantage.  We look further at the film's portrayal of the industry and the obvious references it makes to Los Angeles and Hollywood culture. By setting the scene at nighttime and focusing on local TV stations, the film reveals a darker side to 'Tinseltown', far from the bright lights and the silver screens, where has-beens and would-be's exploit every opportunity to get ahead and stay relevant.  We also touch on the capitalist mythology espoused by Lou as he ruthlessly manoeuvres his way into the industry, discarding those who stand in his way. The supporting character of Rick exemplifies the struggles of the empath in contending with the pathological nature of the economic system, where numbers trump integrity and narratives trump the truth.  Is 'Nightcrawler' a critique of Hollywood in general, and is it in fact a critique of the entire economic system? Does the psychopathic character of Lou tell us something profound about mass media? Be sure to check out our next episode, where we explore the concept of news stories and media narratives, looking at what Nightcrawler tells us about perception.  Topics discussed include: Los Angeles, KWLA-6, Jake Gyllenhall, Bill Paxton, Rene Russo, Riz Ahmed, Psychopath, Sociopath, Cluster-B, Narcissist, Accident, Emergency, Crime, Urban, Carjacking, Stringer, Filming, Thief, Capitalism, Opportunism, Underbelly, Local News, Car-Chase, Dodge Challenger, Police, Shootout, Beverly Hills, Bel Air, Hollywood, Affluence, Carnage, American Dream, Americana, Inspiration, Exploitation, Blackmail, Ratings, Narratives, Weakness, Empath, Psychology, Sabotage, Music, Soundtracks, Ambience, Skid Row, News Anchors, Attractive Women, Television, Sensationalism, Blood, 5 Arguments for The Abolition of Television, American Psycho, Selling Yourself, Employment, Bullshit, Hard Work, Being Realistic, Selling Out, Murder, Profit, Darkness, Attention, Scandal, Controversy, Expose, Actors, Stars, Celebrities, Debasement, Current Events.
