Matt Phillp talks with culture writer Marcie Bianco, author of Breaking Free: The Lie of Equality and the Feminist Fight for Freedom about her childhood growing up working class in South New Jersey with a father who, as she puts it “erased himself” and how that foundation informs her perspective on society and politics today.  They talk about how her family dynamic shifted when she got a sports scholarship to Harvard, a moment that changed her life forever, how she learned to defend herself at an early age against her father's violent outbursts, and what it means to throw off the shackles of systemic oppression and create a life of your own making.  Given how bleak it is to truly look at systemic, white patriarchal oppression - another manifestation of father-centric culture if ever there was one - and how it continues to play out in myriad ways for anyone who isn't a straight white man, Marcie's take on culture and her book are both fundamentally hopeful, even if she initially struggled to find that sense of hope. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/tell-me-about-your-father/support

My book is about my interpretation of good over evil, how God takes a simple young man to a man with true values, who became a warrior of God and charity and humbleness to the end, and how God shows how wisdom is the only way to live, the ugliness of violence and crimes to the man that finds unconditional love in a woman that needs her knight and shining armor. Bill Duffy was from a particular generation of Tower Store Managers; started in the mid 80's to early 90's, spent 15-20 years with the company and was still looked upon as a “newbie”. But Bill broke that mold big time to both the joy and concern of the seasoned and hardened Tower Managers and Regionals. Bill was a General Manager for only 6 years before being promoted into a Regional Manager capacity; light speed in Tower's culture. And two years later to be promoted to Vice President of North American Operations? What did this guy have, to move at warp speed through the Tower Records ecosystem? Bill will tell us how he remembers it all. From his time working for a South New Jersey indie record chain to Assistant Manager under Eric Wood at Cherry Hill NJ. After a couple years running his first store in Nanuet NY, Bill came back to the Philadelphia area running the iconic store on South Street in Philadelphia. From there Bill was based out of Texas, a move he initially resisted. His final four years with the company, as VP of North American Ops were the final four years of the company. Through it all, despite circumstances seemingly limiting the opportunity for innovation, Bill brought a sense of possible renewal to the way Tower Records ran its stores until the clock finally ran out. Join us on the first episode of our 2nd year as we discuss the impact Tower had on the management style and continuing evolution of Bill Duffy.

DENNIS MOROLDAJoin Wes Tankersley on this episode of Shaping Success as he speaks to Dennis Morolda about his story of success of teaching young men how to be men.Dennis grew up playing sports in South New Jersey and asked himself what is a man and how should men act since he had a troubled relationship with his father. He went to College in South Jersey and majored in Education and Sociology.  His path to success started when he did an internship helping At Risk boys as an Assistant Group Counselor. He interacted with kids who had trouble with the law and came from single family homes with absent or non-competent fathers. His job at the time was to observe how the counselors interacted with the kids. Eventually he was hired as a van driver. He went to school at his college then pick up the kids from their homes in the bad areas, take them to where they would have their sessions, then drive them home. He found that these drives home were therapy sessions for the kids.  The kids would open up to him and tell him things they weren't telling the licensed therapists. He realized that this was his calling and became his living passion. His third day of teaching was September 11, 2001. The World Trade Center could be seen from the school. This event made him realize the kids need the following things: A need to be heard, competence, fun, relationships, a feeling of community, and safety which is the most important.  Dennis set himself up for success by realizing he loved leadership, so he got his Masters in Educational Leadership to become a principal. He taught for 4 ½ years  before becoming an assistant principal in 2005. The kids getting into trouble were 90% boys, and he knew something had to be done. No one was doing anything, so he decided to start a boys social group called Building Men. There would be 20 to 25 boys would meet an hour before school. There he did team building where the boys would talk about what is happening in their lives.  Dennis asked them what does it mean to be a man? Success meaning for these boys was to be bigger, faster, stronger, six-pack abs, beards and tattoos, and many sexual conquests. They also said it was accumulation of material things such as cars, money, and houses. Dennis pointed out that these things can be easiCheck out our sponsor The Warriors Collection for coffee, gear and more use code TANK at check out for a special Discount! https://warriorscollectionbrand.com/ Check out our sponsor Tattooed and Successful @tattoedandsuccessfulco use code TANK at check out for a special Discount! https://tattooedandsuccessful.com/Support the showFor merchandise, podcast and youtube: https://linktr.ee/wes.tankersley Join the Success Warrior Crew Facebook Group https://www.facebook.com/groups/successwarriorcrew/ This Episode of Shaping Success is brought to you by Terry Levy at Parkway Chevrolet in Tomball Texas. Jon Burk grew up in South New Jersey, just outside of Philadelphia. In the mid 70's he was a teenage Beatles fanatic and all he wanted to do as a young man was work in a record store.  Jon never worked at Tower Records, but he did put in his time, working several years for the Listening Booth record chain where he specialized in doing displays, i.e. visual merchandising. He made his move to the distribution side after banning the local CEMA Distribution merchandiser for producing lousy displays. He talked his way into the position and a career in record distribution was Jon's. Meeting the Tower brass before opening and then calling on Tower Records' first Philadelphia store was a treat for Jon, until he had to regularly track down buyers for orders. After Philadelphia, Jon headed up and staffed CEMA's Boston office, where working on Marketing ideas with Tower Newbury's Robert Stapleton was “kismet”. His appreciation for the store's Art Department was significant as well. Jon's declared his biggest win in Music Distribution to be building the Blue Note Lounge in the lobby of Tower Newbury's Jazz department. Enjoy this week's episode where in addition to Tower Records we discuss one hit wonders, being a Beatles fanatic in the 70's, the upside and dark side of making your bones in the music business in Philadelphia, Philly radio's role in the music business overall and bringing it all back home at the World Premiere screening of “All Things Must Pass” in Los Angeles and catching up with all the Tower people he partnered  and did battle with in this heady years of record stores.

Get ready for a high monthly premium, though." says electrek: "Musk confirmed on Twitter that the timeline is now “for sure” during the second quarter of 2021, which puts the release between April and June. The CEO also reiterated that it will still be a “better long-term deal” to outright buy the Full Self-Driving package. That’s something that Musk has emphasized many times over the last year since the subscription service became more likely. The subscription service is expected to cost over $100 per month, and the price could go up with the purchase price. While there, Rivian engineers tested self-heating strategies for its battery pack. According to the Control Integrations Engineer, Rivian’s battery was designed to operate up to an ambient temperature of -40°F (-40°C). R1 vehicles use a central cold plate to efficiently heat or cool their batteries and maintain the cells’ optimum temperature." according to TEslarati: " the VP for Propulsion Powertrain, stated that Rivian’s R1T vehicles could soak for a long time in -40°F and still operate fine once properly heated. However, it would take 20 minutes to heat the battery enough to use the car’s full power and optimal battery performance."   XPENG P7 WITH COBALT-FREE LFP BATTERY IS ABOUT TO ARRIVE "In China, the Xpeng P7 with a cobalt-free LFP battery will become available to buy in just two days. EWN - Engineering With Nature

Monica Chasten grew up in Vineland, NJ, close to the South New Jersey beaches where her parents and grandparents fostered her love for the coast. With a talent in math and science, she started looking at the coast in a different way, wondering why the waves would break the way they did and how “piles of rocks” could protect the fragile shoreline. She translated her passion into a 35-year career as a coastal engineer with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Monica was the moving force leading Philadelphia District to become the third EWN Proving Ground in 2016. In this episode, we talk about her work and her collaboration with other scientists and engineers to advance coastal dredging practices and the beneficial use of dredged material.   As a Project Manager for the District’s Operations Division, Monica’s role involves maintaining coastal navigation channels in New Jersey and Delaware, which includes the 117-mile New Jersey Intracoastal Waterway.  She is also the lead for the District’s Engineering With Nature efforts.   In 2012, Superstorm Sandy devastated the coast, which, as Monica describes, “was, in my lifetime and in my professional experience, the worst storm that has hit the New Jersey coastline.” With roads closed, Monica visited the area by boat to assess the navigation channels. She observed houses in the bay, navigation channels blocked with sediment, and debris everywhere.  Her mission was to restore navigation, given the life safety issues associated with shoaling in the federal channels.   For years, the Corps had been looking at how best to use sediment. People generally accepted that there were better options than basically “throwing dredged material away” in upland areas, but traditional policies and standard practices often presented obstacles to trying anything different. Post-Sandy, however, more favorable conditions for innovation emerged that provided opportunities to apply Regional Sediment Management and Engineering With Nature to produce a range of value through beneficial use.     Working with colleagues across the Corps, the state of New Jersey, private industry, and non-profit organizations, Monica initiated pilot programs that put EWN principles into practice for which she received the EWN Leadership award in 2016. One project involved dredging the New Jersey Intracoastal Waterway navigation channel and using the sediment to restore nearby Mordecai Island, a critical habitat and protective buffer that was degrading because of erosion. Because of her persistence, sediment dredged from the navigation channel was placed to stabilize the most vulnerable section of the island. This effort complemented the work of others, including the State of New Jersey and the Mordecai Land Trust, and served to protect this valuable habitat, while providing an important buffer against waves and destructive storm surge for the nearby community. Other pilot projects undertaken in partnership with the State of New Jersey and others in the Cape May Wetlands Wildlife Management Area included the Avalon marsh enhancement and Ring Island habitat creation projects.   After successfully completing several projects, the Corps, the State of New Jersey and The Wetlands Institute launched the Seven Mile Island Innovation Lab (SMIIL). The initiative is designed to advance and improve dredging and marsh restoration techniques in coastal New Jersey through innovative research, collaboration, knowledge sharing and practical application. SMIIL has brought together a diverse group of organizations to test, demonstrate and innovate in delivering engineering, environmental and societal benefits.       Sediment is an important resource that can be used to protect the wetlands.  In turn, the wetlands help protect coastal communities. Throughout our conversation, Monica highlights the importance and value of collaboration on science, research and development. She talks about learning from others who have conducted similar projects, sharing experiences across the coastal community, and engaging with stakeholders to innovate, develop and apply better practices for protecting fragile coastal environments and the communities they protect.     Related Links: EWN Website ERDC Website USACE Philadelphia District and Marine Design Center USACE Philadelphia District Facebook Page Monica Chasten on ResearchGate Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Intracoastal Waterway Mordecai Island Coastal Wetlands Restoration Coastal Dredging and Beneficial use of Dredged Material Thin Layer Placement The Wetlands Institute New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife Seven Mile Island Innovation Lab - USACE Seven Mile Island Innovation Lab – Wetlands Institute

Shaun Gines, Senior Community Manager for the American Cancer Society and Gina McAleese, Senior Community Manager for Making Strides discussed breast cancer and the Society's programming.  We talked numbers, it's the second leading cause of cancer deaths in women, but death rates are decreasing in part due to their work in screening.  We discussed the disparity in treatment and death rates for women of color and ways to prevent it through diet, exercise and avoiding alcohol and tobacco.   They noted they are a leading funder, second only to the US government, in supporting research with over 69 million in breast cancer research alone, a dedication to new projects until they become eligible for major funding.  Gina spoke about local programming that includes Road to Recovery volunteer rides to treatment, their Hope Lodges for patients receiving treatment away from home and their wig fittings, offering free wigs to patients. We also discussed upcoming Making Strides events to support their work, including a televised 'Virtually YOUNITED' broadcast on ABC and Telemundo October 15th, a Pink Car Parade in at the 76ers Fieldhouse October 25th and this year's virtual Making Strides for Greater Philadelphia and South New Jersey on October 15th.  We are encouraged to form a team, or join as an individual, and drive, walk or even jog in support of Making Strides. In addition to the virtual events, men in leadership roles are being solicited to wear pink during October to show support and to raise awareness - and funds - for Making Strides.  Real Men Wear Pink is an annual 'bragging rights' competition that give valuable support to breast cancer awareness and funding for programming and research.
