CLAIRE CHASE - RESILIENCE THINKER, PUBLIC SPEAKER AND DESIGN STRATEGIST

Claire, a Social Capital enthusiast, is a Resilience Thinker, public speaker, and design strategist. She is always thinking about how we can enact resilience thinking to be more productive in our daily lives. Claire grew up in a southern Illinois and her small town, community experience stuck with her even as she moved to Chicago. She began asking herself, “How do we cultivate that sense of community as we move on in our lives?”. While getting her Ph.D., Claire researched resilience thinking, specifically studying how we can better process information and find common values in order to create collective actions that can make the world a better place. Resilience Thinkingsays that we have these things we do, an interaction or conversation, these moments where we are met with conflict or things we don’t understand. Often, we want to walk away or bulldoze over those things we don’t agree with, but Claire encourages us to go deeper. How we feel is important, but if we want to move forward and have a productive conversation then we need to take a step back and reflect on our own role in what is happening. Instead of shutting the other side/person down, what happens when we seek out the values of what they are saying or what is embedded in what they are experiencing? Most often, trust is the component that is missing. Though we may not have the same experiences, we likely hold the same values and if we can find those commonalities, we can learn from them and it will help us figure out a resilient solution that transforms the problem. Studies show that we, as humans, largely share the same values even though we might have different experiences. Social Capital, finding commonality and building trust become the bridge between us. Claire has recently launched a podcast of her own called “Meet the Moment'' a show where she and her co-host ask big, sometimes tough, questions and have candid conversations about how we can look at this thing that’s happening for all of us in different ways to create change. Claire facilitates the Resilience Collective group and has created a series of courses called “Resilience Thinking & You” that will launch next month. Claire believes that everyone has the power to shift their mindset to see themselves as students and designers of the worlds we seek. Listen to this episode to hear how Claire builds Social Capital and how she believes Resilience Thinking put into action can change the world around us.    Name: Claire Chase, Ph.D.Company: Resilience By Design ConsultingInstagram: @resilience.by.design & @meetthemomentpodcastCompany Website: www.resiliencebydesign.netLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/claire-chase-ph-d-0a39556/  Email Sarah at sarah@sarahfrancesmcdaniel.comLearn more at www.socialcapitalexpert.com and www.sarahfrancesmcdaniel.com

Today, she is the Founder of The Pledgettes and is passionate about supporting women on their financial journey through coaching, training and creating a moneywise community. Jenn believes that developing Social Capital is how we advance through life. Jenn grew up with a family who spoke openly about money and taught her that generosity, taking care of others, supporting the community and being a good helper to those around us are the keys to life. In high school, Jenn got connected with a street team to help sell CDs of up and coming new artists before Napster and other music sharing platforms were created. She was involved in these grassroots marketing strategies and learned how to build trust and credibility. She worked with Oscar Meyer to build their first food truck as a way to connect differently with their following. “Humans crave shared experiences and finding connections through them”, Jenn shares. Being moved by the obstacles women face in building wealth, Jenn founded The Pledgettes where she helps connect those women who are having the money talks and who have strong financial acumen with those who want to have it but don’t know where to start or how to get there. Arezou, a Start-Up/Founder coach, helps business owners take their ideas to market and shows them how to scale their business and to take it to the next level. During COVID, Arezou also finds herself helping business owners pivot their strategies to remain relevant in the changing environment. Born and raised in Iran, Arezou moved to the United States when she was 18 to go to school and has stayed in the States ever since. She attended engineering school and worked for 15 years for Hewlett Packard in the Pacific Northwest. In 2011, Arezou and her husband moved to Colorado where she worked for corporate America at Crocs and Otterbox. In 2016, she left the corporate world and found herself working with a startup company. In 2018, she left the company she was working with and began working with founders teaching them how to help launch companies themselves. Initially, Arezou invested her own money in 5 companies, three of which have been very successful and continue to operate today. These days, Arezou invests in her own ideas and company(s). A year and a half ago, Arezou, began working on “DispatchMom'', a platform for how to help busy moms with on-demand support for childcare, meal prep, housekeeping, and more! Arezou encourages us to be ready to say “YES” to opportunities that present themselves. “Don’t overthink things, because you can talk yourself out of anything”, she says. If it doesn’t work, we can always find our way out of it. The value of the experience and potential value of the opportunity outweighs the cost of the risk. Arezou's Modus Operandi is “First say yes and figure it out rather than try to figure it out first.” She believes we have a “little voice” that leads us in the right direction if we follow it. There is a lot of value in the analysis but acting on opportunities is important, and of course balance is required. She reminds us that when cultivating Social Capital it is important to build relationships to share commonality and add value not because you want something out of it. Giving feels good and it never fails that we receive multiples of what we give and the giving/receiving cycle continues to repeat itself. In 2014, looking back on her life, she realized Social Capital had been the catalyst for her life and she often had taken it for granted. This is when she became more aware and intentional in the way she cultivates Social Capital. Relationships that start professionally often become personal, lifelong friendships. She encourages us to invest in our network and build Social Capital because it is invaluable to our future. She reminds us to move from transactional relationships to going into it with a desire to learn more and to find a way to connect deeper with those in our lives. Arezou is a “Get It Done” person. Julie, a leadership trainer and development coach, is passionate about helping people lead with ease. She helps her clients learn the soft skills required for effective leadership like how to communicate more effectively in professional situations. Julie started her career at Harvard University in their Capital Gifts Fundraising group. This allowed her to meet many impressive (yet down to earth) people and understand more about how they function and engage. While working at Harvard Business School on an initiative examining women in the workforce, Julie studied women in leadership roles and began to understand that a lack of confidence and skill as well as an inability to influence those around them is what held women back professionally. Later, Julie began working at Boston College in the Center for Corporate Citizenship and was focused on understanding employee retainment and engagement. At a pivotal moment in her career, Julie felt like she could be doing more and feel more passionate about her work. She examined what it was that she truly loved doing on a daily basis and realized that she loved the conversations she was having with driven professionals while helping them overcome the challenges they faced in becoming a strong leader. Six weeks after this realization, Julie started a coaching certification program and her own company was launched! Understanding what makes us feel alive is key in being where you are supposed to be in life. People often want to stay in places in their careers where they are comfortable even if it may not be the best fit for them. Julie is passionate about helping people think through how to create professional opportunities that fuel them. Julie encourages us to always ask questions about those around you; this is essential in creating a deeper connection and building Social Capital. When we give people the opportunity to speak about themselves, it creates a bond through their positive engagement with you. When teaching leadership, many just want to do what they already know to do, or want someone to do the work for them. Julie teaches her clients to use simple, yet not simplistic, tools which help them overcome challenges. Julie shares why she believes Emotional Intelligence, empathy and self-awareness are essential in successful leadership. When people understand themselves and one another, they are able to work together much more effectively. Building on the golden rule, Julie utilizes what she calls the Titanium Rule: Speak to others the way they want and need to be spoken to. Help them hear what you are saying in a way they can receive and understand it. Be confident that as you help those around you, and your network will be there to help you achieve your goals. Stacy, founder and CEO of Rise Collaborative Workspace, is from St. Louis, Missouri and started her career as a high school math teacher. She is amazed at where her journey has taken her and in this episode she shares personal stories that can inspire us all. Stacy always had aspirations of high level leadership and a passion for helping people reach their full potential. In 2012, Stacy started her first company, “Girls Dreaming Big” where she found great success in supporting high school girls overcome obstacles and develop a sense of community during high school. She loved being an entrepreneur, but realized working alone most of the time that she desired more professional interaction. She started interviewing successful women (over 300 in total) to understand what their needs were, what they had done to get where they were and what advice they had for her and other women. This is where her vision for Rise Collaborative was born. In 2016, Stacy opened her first Rise Workspace in St Louis with 6,000 sq. ft. and had over 200 members within the first year and she soon realized it is about more than just the space; it is about community. Stacy has since opened a Rise Collaborative in Denver and doubled in size, both in  members and physical locations. Stacy shares with us that one of the biggest predictors in business success is access to Social Capital. At Rise, they do this by helping their members be connected to the right people and having a very intentional network. For Stacy, being a trusted resource and someone others can count on is essential to building Social Capital. She encourages us to be open minded about how relationships may impact our life now and in the future - we never know what part someone may play in the story of our life. Stacy reminds us that it is important to have a “long game” mindset and not be focused only on “what’s in it for me?” as we cultivate relationships and grow Social Capital. Adam, grew up in small town Iowa, attended college at the University of Northern Iowa and studied finance and real estate. In 2011, Adam decided to leave his home state and move to Denver, Colorado to explore a bigger city with more diversity, arts, and culture. Once in Denver, he worked with a private equity firm for a short time before moving to Holland Partner Group where he was able to begin getting development experience and was lucky enough to work on some iconic projects like Union Denver and Platform at Union Station. Relationships were key in Adam’s transition to Colorado as well as his entrance into real estate development and he quickly became aware of how important his network would be to his success. Having come into the development world during the recession, Adam believes there are many opportunities to be found in the midst of challenge. He recommends reading the book, “The Obstacle Is the Way”, for inspirational stories about overcoming obstacles and finding the silver lining in our circumstance. After 4.5 years at Holland Partner Group, a large institutional firm, Adam moved to BMC Investments, a smaller, private equity firm focused mostly on development in Cherry Creek North in Denver. Working with these two firms, Adam gained experience in many aspects of development and realized he was ready to start a development company of his own, and launched Narrate Companies! Having a strong network has been essential for Adam to make this entrepreneurial leap and he encourages us to build strong relationships in the areas that we want to grow our business in. Adam believes there are key elements to building a strong network such as being a good listener who is present and available to those around him. He also stresses the importance of being vulnerable and putting yourself out there to find commonalities with those we are connecting with. Possibly the most important element is being trustworthy, this is absolutely necessary to cultivate deep, meaningful relationships. People can easily see through wrong motives. As Adam was building his network in the early days, he attended many networking events and made as many connections as possible. Now, further in his career, he finds that most of his valuable connects are made through intentional introductions by others in his sphere. He encourages us to be mindful and intentional about the connections we are making while remaining open to what may unexpectedly come from an introduction. Adam encourages us to do what we say we are going to do and believes everything else will usually take care of itself eventually. Realizing wealth management was not his passion, Matt began finding potential real estate deals and sending them to one of the people he met while in the Caribbean who was based in New York. He found a few deals that penciled out well and that is how he began his real estate career. After 7 years of working in Los Angeles, Matt moved to Denver in 2010 and opened his own business, BMC Investments. When they were first getting started, their bank told them that no one would like this type of food. They believed differently so they figured out a way to make it happen. They opened their first location (Denver Highlands) using a home equity line of credit and their credit cards. They now have franchises in Maine, California and Arizona and are still growing. For the last eight years they have been known for their (CLEAN) hormone, antibiotic and nitrate free foods in many of their locations. In 2018, Heidi bought her husband out of the business and currently her oldest daughter is the president of the company. As the leadership, Heidi and her daughter are always asking, “Where are they in their business today? Where do they want to go from here?”. They believe it is about honoring and connecting with the franchise owners - truly caring about them. Even with the demands of leading the organization, Heidi’s daughter has taken the time to visit with each franchise owner personally. Heidi is very involved in chambers and other community organizations. She considers her network to be invaluable and believes success is really about loving people and sharing what we have learned (sometimes the hard way) to help those around us. Heidi says, “it’s not about me - relationships are very much about them and their success”. Business is personal, we all have our own perspectives on being right, and she encourages us to learn from the different perspectives around us.  ALWAYS and NEVER are words that box us in, Heidi encourages us to be nimble and flexible in our personal and professional relationships. She also encourages us to make an effort to connect with people in authentic and honest ways allowing the relationship to blossom. She reminds us that life is full of wonderful people who are worth making an effort for. Heidi’s Deli celebrated its 25th anniversary in business on September 9, 2019! They continue to expand the franchise by sharing their mission, identifying their values and making sure the partners meet their goals. As Heidi’s daughter continues to take the reins of Heidi’s Deli, Heidi is able to help other business owners discover their passion, plan and strategize for their business’ success through her recently launched consulting practice. For fun and because of their love of shoes, Heidi and her friend decided to host a “Shoe Happy Hour” and invite fabulous women, wearing their prettiest shoes to meet at a dive bar and show them off! Heidi, who loves to entertain, also hosts a plate breaking party every year on the Winter Soltis! The plate breaking symbolizes change, growth and joy. Guests write a message on the plate - on the front of the plate a special memory or positive experience and on the back of the plate is something to let go of, release or change. At the end of the party, guests set their intentions and then throw their plate at the wall and watch it shatter! Heidi has seen individuals expand in business and personally from these events and opportunities to connect with themselves and those around them. Heidi’s advice for us is to ask for help when we need it, manage expectations the best we can in all areas of relationships and to own our stuff and be willing to take responsibility for our choices and actions. Name: Heidi Bendiksen NaplesCompany: Heidi's Brooklyn DeliEmail: heidinaples@heidisbrooklyndeli.com  Company Website: https://heidisbrooklyndeli.com/about Email Sarah at sarah@sarahfrancesmcdaniel.comLearn more at www.socialcapitalexpert.com and www.sarahfrancesmcdaniel.com

Darren became a master at seeing the needs of people and connecting them with others who can help/support them during his time as a recruiter. He realized the power of connecting people and the benefits for others and himself. After 15 years in recruiting, the last 5 of which he owned his own Executive Search Firm, Darren found himself asking, “Is this it?... - There must be something more to life than this” so he closed his company and began an adventure of self-exploration to discover what really matters to him in life. In this time, he realized that instead of pursuing success that significance was far more important. He believes authenticity, vulnerability, and trust are keys to developing social capital. Trust is the foundation of social capital and from trust, success is inevitable. When there is no trust or trust is lost, we become fragmented and isolated from those around us. Darren promotes effective communication and reminds us that much of what we say is nonverbal and is said by our body language and our willingness to listen. He encourages us to ask better questions, go deeper and get beyond the surface in our relationships. He sees every situation as an opportunity to serve and add value to those we encounter. Darren’s passion comes from his faith and his spirituality - he often asks “What is your Truth?” and encourages us to dive deep into that question for ourselves. Darren is currently involved in “a whole lot of giving” and emphasizes the importance of giving more than we take in life. Darren is involved in a number of companies including Apeiron, a Social Capital Firm, Core Ventures, a business consulting firm focused on leadership/strategy/culture consulting and recruiting/staffing solutions, and is a Spiritual Director for the Way, a community of men that desire spiritual development and to find clarity and purpose in all areas of life. Name: Darren MoyerCompany: Core VenturesEmail: darren@coreventures.coFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/darrenraymoyerLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/darrenmoyer/Company Website: www.coreventures.coNonprofit Website: www.theway2life.org  Email Sarah at sarah@sarahfrancesmcdaniel.comLearn more at www.socialcapitalexpert.com and www.sarahfrancesmcdaniel.com

Keo loves psychology and our ability to influence/be influenced by people on varying levels, so she took what she loved most about psychology and translated it into marketing. Whether influencing people’s buying decisions, something they are reading,  the clothes they wear or even more impactful is our ability to do “placemaking”. Placemaking and Experiential marketing impacts how we think and behave and what we do today and in the years to come. Keo is passionate about placemaking and creating memorable experiences. She encourages when we are creating experiences to be sure people are experiencing something fresh and new each time they come. Keo sees experiential marketing on the rise as people continue to be less interested in acquiring things and more interested in acquiring memories with people they love. Early in her career, Keo started her first company, a gorilla marketing company that she grew into a 65 person firm. Since then she has owned and operated successful marketing firms and been involved in some of Denver’s best placemaking projects such as Dairy Block and Denver Union Station. Recently, Keo took a break in life and spend nine months traveling the world and finding refreshment. She encourages us to take a break - a real break - to allow ourselves time to rediscover our priorities and passions. Now that Keo has returned to Denver, she is consulting with developers and municipalities around the idea of placemaking and creating a great place for people to live, work and play. She has launched “The Fractional CEO”, a service to help smaller companies receive the benefits of a Chief level position including strategizing and planning without the financial burden of having someone on staff. Keo finds herself energized by the many interesting people and businesses she is encountering through this endeavour and looks forward to see where “The Fractional CEO” takes her. Her most recent passion project is “New Thinkers” - a quarterly event bringing together people who are dedicated to impacting the world and solving world problems in a new way. Keo reminds us that each of us hold a piece of the picture and only when each of us bring our piece of the puzzle does the picture become clear. Each of us and our piece is valuable. Keo credits many of the opportunities she has had in life to her network and her ability to connect with those around her. They are passionate about being happy in life. It’s not a midlife crisis - it’s a midlife journey and it’s about thriving, not just existing, in your second act. There is a cultural shift that is happening for women, it’s not about age, it’s about living at 40 and 50+.  They offer events, career workshops and other professional development programs for corporate women, business owners, freelancers and returnship candidates. It’s about disrupting ageism, they do not want women over 40 and 50 to be pushed aside any more! They want to ensure they get a fair chance. It’s about creating a community to connect. It’s another life stage, looking through the lens of experience and asking “what am I passionate about? What fills my heart? How can I have a deeper level of impact, leave a legacy and make genuine connections?” Barbara believes it’s our time. We’re today’s it-girl with a $15 trillion buying authority however, culture says it’s not and they put us on the shelf. Enough. We’re experienced, adventurous, life-loving, ready for more women and it’s time society see us like that. And as women, we need to be willing to let go of the bad relationships that are no longer having a positive impact on our lives. She believes we should be around people that lift us up and encourage you to take your second act to the next level.  Barbara's mother greatly impacted her life by teaching her how to “love” herself for who she is - we are enough! Lupe believes in being patient, experience has shown her that things take time and persistence is critical. She encourages us to be able to give and accept criticism and to be willing to talk through our issues. Having humility and being able to apologize when you are wrong, will go along the way both personally and professionally. Lupe encourages us to understand our strengths and weaknesses and to believe we have the ability to attract people who can help us. She believes it is about finding those great relationships and taking time to cultivate them. For Lupe, the most important relationship in her life is with her mother. They are very close and she considers her mom to be her rock. Lupe encourages us to accept that “Change is scary as hell”, but it’s a sign that you are alive. She reminds us that change is not always a negative, so just embrace it. She says why not take a different route home, do something you've never done before - just little changes like these can make a difference in our lives. Don’t be afraid to be by yourself and to take time to reflect. She believes life is about learning a little more about yourself and asking for guidance from above and within. We must be willing to see it and receive it. These ladies are passionate about taking action on the stirring of ideas in their hearts through mind mapping, setting the meetings and taking action! They believe in being aware of what is happening around us and being ready for change. They remind us to never let anyone tell you “you can’t” because if you believe, YOU CAN!  Look for Barbara and Lupe hosting their next conference in Denver this Spring! The next time you see a girlfriend, remember to pass it on and support her right where she is! #secondactwomen Name: Barbara BrooksCompany: SecondAct|WomenEmail: barbara@bloomcopresents.comPhone: 720.318.4199Instagram: @heybarbarabFacebook: @heybarbarabLinkedIn:barbaralbrooksCompany Website: secondactwomen.com Name: Guadalupe HirtCompany: SecondAct|WomenEmail: Lupe@bloomcopresents.comPhone: 303.859.1762Facebook: @Guadalupe Olvera MontesLinkedIn: Guadalupe Olvera Montes HirtCompany Website: secondactwomen.com Upcoming Events: Check out the website for events and programs!Other Information They Want To Share: Does this sound like your tribe?
