Hello Woodpreneurs! On the show today our guest is Matt from M2 Lumber. M2 Lumber is a sawmill and lumber yard that specializes in salvaging local trees that come down from storms or new development. They mill those into slabs and dimensional lumber but mostly live edge slabs, then dry those in one of their two kilns. M2 Lumber has a solar kiln that they built two years ago based on Virginia Tech's design and also a new iDRY Standard vacuum kiln that came in February. M2 sells directly to the public, to other woodworkers, construction companies, contractors, interior designers, and even retail sales through that avenue. They also do a little bit of furniture building but that's more of a guilty pleasure Matt says as he loves to build furniture. The Origin Story of M2 Lumber Matt says it was not on purpose for sure. It was more of an accident. He grew up surrounded by woodworking as his dad is a very talented woodworker. Matt clarifies that his father isn't a woodworker by trade, but just as a hobby, he has built almost everything. Everything that is extremely challenging you can imagine in the woodworking world, he's built. Beautiful furniture, secretary desk, dining tables, corner cabinets, Matt recalls he built a grandfather clock, and even a violin once! In Matt's college years, he naturally gravitated back to woodworking as a hobby. This continued after college. Looking to make some extra money on the side while also doing something he enjoyed, he started to do woodworking as a side business. Matt was building tables and small furniture as well as cutting boards trying to make a little extra money. Then, in 2015, he moved out to the country, as they discuss. “We have about five acres of land where we live now. My neighbor and I were talking one day, and we had a tree come down and I was like, “Well I don't know what we're gonna do with this. I guess I'll burn it or whatever.” And he said, “Well, why don't you take it over to the sawmill?” and my ears perked up when I was like “Sawmill what?” I didn't know there was a sawmill around here and sure enough, there's a sawmill run by name a guy named Terry Ellison, about two miles down the road. He milled it up for me and charged me like $60 or something ridiculously cheap. I was really hooked at that point because that was the first experience taking a tree getting it milled into lumber and then being able to do something with it.” To see more from M2 Lumber check out the links below! Matt Bailey is a best-selling author. He's written several books such as Internet Marketing: An Hour a Day, Wired to be Wowed, and Teach New Dogs Old Tricks. He's also the host of the Endless Coffee Cup podcast. Matt is a marketing expert, trainer, and speaker on digital marketing strategy. Matt is a digital marketing instructor for the Direct Marketing Association and an instructor for LinkedIn Learning. His training content and curriculum can also be found at Rutgers University, Duke University, Purdue, Microsoft, Hewlett Packard, and many other places. ‘ In today's episode, Matt Bailey will share some of his strategies for chasing real profit and not meaningless vanity numbers. He will share strategies about asking the right questions and listening. We'll also discuss diversifying our revenue streams, learning from our failures, and the tectonic shift that's happening with Google and third-party cookies. Asking the Right Questions Matt is very passionate about digital and media literacy, or the ability to understand the tools we're using and to understand bias in information. This was something Matt learned during his journey. Matt started off studying journalism, but he knew that wasn't what he wanted to do, so he went into real estate. He realized there was a way to promote large commercial properties, websites. Two years later, his websites were getting about 200 leads a month. He learned coding, SEO, link building, and PR doing all these things for himself. He started learning analytics, which led him to ask why his leads from searches weren't turning into sales. “That changed my whole perspective about what I was doing, how I was doing it, and following the profit rather than following the big numbers because if I had to just ask what's generating the most leads, I would have answered that question, but it was the wrong question,” Matt said. Matt was getting more than 80% of his leads through search rankings, but none of them turned into sales. He poured through his data spreadsheets, trying to figure out where his leads were going wrong and where his sales were coming from. He found that his sales were coming from articles he had published on real estate sites where there were links back to his site. People were reading those articles, clicking the links, and registering on his website. Those people accounted for only 4% of his traffic but 80% of his sales. If Matt hadn't asked the right questions, he never would have discovered the right group of people to focus on. He would have wasted time and money trying to turn the other 96% of his traffic into sales instead of growing that 4% that already made up 80% of his sales. Questions that drive us to understand our data can help us understand our business and how to make it more profitable. Ask, Listen, Understand Matt said some of the best people he has worked with have been able to do this: asking greeting questions and then connecting them to business acumen. Asking the right questions leads to understanding how a business makes money, what the expenses are, what takes away from profitability, what's the business model, how does it functions, etc. A key part of this process is listening. I feel like the more listening I do, the smarter I am. Listening is one of the most powerful ways to monetize because we can then position our product to sell, we can understand what the needs are, we can customize and personalize based upon it, and we can address true concerns. Matt shared a survey he had heard about that was run during COVID-19 about virtual selling and B2B sellers. When interviewed, salespeople were saying, “I have a hard time connecting with customers. They're not as attentive, and it's a more difficult sell because of COVID-19.” However, when they interviewed buyers or people in the lead sales funnel, their response was, “I'm not being listened to. They don't really understand what I need.” In Matt's early days of sales, they used to play a game when they went to sales meetings: whoever talked the most lost. “If you talk the most, that means you dominated the meeting, and the customer did not talk and express what they needed. You were trying to sell the whole time and you didn't listen,” Matt said. We should be listening to what our customers need. We should also be listening to our partners, those on our team, and our employees because they often have great ideas that we may not have thought of. Diversifying and Creating Multiple Income Streams Matt also learned the value of making money in different ways. When he was in real estate, other agents started contacting him, asking him to put their properties on his site because it was getting a lot of traffic. “That taught me very early [that] I can make money through many other ways,” Matt said. “Putting up a website and [having] other people pay you to put their stuff on it, that takes very little work at all. . . . One of those things I learned is that with the internet, with all these things, there are many different ways to develop multiple income streams.” Are there different ways we could be diversifying our revenue streams? Sometimes we put ourselves in boxes, saying, “This is the way it's always been done, so that's the way I have to do it.” But that's not true. Experimenting and thinking outside that box may lead us to more success. We can ask our customers what other needs they have or what other products or services they would be interested in. For example, a business that sells food may find out from their customers that they're interested in recipes they can use to cook their food. We can also ask ourselves what our competitors have done to expand their revenue streams, and we can look to businesses outside our industry as well to see how they have brought in revenue in different ways, and then apply those lessons to our industry and business. Learning from Failures Whenever we fail or make mistakes, it can damage us and our confidence, but Matt likes to look at his past failures as learning experiences. He was let go three times from three different jobs because of financial cutbacks. It was hard because those organizations were telling him they didn't need him. “It's funny because I look back on that now as the best thing that ever could have happened,” Matt said. From that experience, he realized he is more secure now working for himself on something he built and has control over than working for a Fortune 500 company. He said, “It's really a lot of things that you learn from that just really turn you into who you are.” When we're looking back at our past mistakes, instead of being ashamed we can ask questions like, “What did I do wrong?” and “What can I do differently next time?” to help us learn from our mistakes. Tectonic Shift: Google and Third-Party Cookies When I asked Matt what the biggest tectonic shift he's seeing is, he said it is the shift Google is making with third-party cookies. Google is eliminating third-party cookies, which isn't necessarily a bad thing because these third-party cookies have been responsible for billions of dollars of ad fraud. Google is consolidating the total ad revenue being spent online. Matt said, “If you want to reach a certain audience, you've got to go through Google. And the way Google's doing it is they're making themselves the owner of all first-party data of anyone who has a Google account.” It will be interesting to see how this plays out. Key Takeaways Thank you so much Matt for sharing your stories and insights with us today. Here are some of my key takeaways from this episode: We should be asking great questions that will give us actionable answers to grow our business. By asking, listening, and understanding our customers we will understand our business better, know what our customers truly need, and be able to make much better, informed decisions. There are many ways to create diversified revenue streams. Being open to new ideas and thinking outside the box can help us grow our revenue, and give our business more stability. We should see our failures as opportunities to learn and grow. They are necessary steps along our path to success. Follow the LightJohn 8:12–20IntroductionC.S. Lewis once said, “I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.”I love that quote because what he's saying is that Christianity not just an abstract truth, it's also something that brings sense to the world.Maybe C.S. Lewis took this from Ps 36:9, which says, “In your light we see light.”When you turn on the TV, pull up YouTube, or look at a Twitter feed, you're instantly met with a cacophony of voices. People bloviating about the world, politics, injustices, all kinds of other things, and if you don't have a reliable reference point, the world can feel like a black oil spill that you're sloshing around in, with people pulling you in their direction from all sides.I sometimes feel like that, but then I like to just pause and think about how refreshing it is to remember that we have a beacon of light to follow. We have a compass that doesn't spin around with the whims of society. It points to one person––Jesus. HE is the light of the world, and whoever follows him will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life. That's the verse I'm going to focus on this morning. The OccasionThis is six months before Jesus will be crucified. Booths is in October, Jesus is on the cross at Passover: April. For the previous six months Jesus had been keeping a low profile. After Jesus fed 5000, the people wanted to make him king by force (John 6:15). He gives a big sermon in Capernaum (“Bread of Life Discourse”), but then heads out into more non-Jewish areas to keep a low profile. He goes up to Tyre/Sidon and casts out a demon out of a Syrophoenician woman's daughter. Mark says Jesus “did not want anyone to know he was there” (Mark 7:24).When he goes to the region of the Decapolis (Greek area), he sees a deaf man and heals him privately, then tells him to tell no one (Mark 7:36).Jesus goes back to Bethsaida but heals a blind man outside the village, then tells him not to enter back into the village (Mark 8:22).Peter confesses Jesus as Messiah as Caesarea-Philippi, but Jesus strictly charged them to tell no one (Mark 8:30).After that Jesus is transfigured and he tells Peter, James and John to tell no one about this until he's raised from the dead (Mark 9:9).Jesus goes through Galilee and Mark says, “He did not want anyone to know, for he was teaching his disciples” (Mark 9:30).So then Jesus comes to the Feast of Booths and everybody is sort of surprised to see him. Not only does he go to the feast, but he begins teaching in the temple area and the people say, “Is not this the man whom they seek to kill? And here he is, speaking openly and they say nothing to him!” (John 7:26).The spotlight is on him once again, and Jesus goes for it. He doesn't back down. He walks to the center of the stage and makes some really big claims. So the occasion is the Feast of Booths––of Sukkot.Feast of Booths: John 7:2.They had a water ceremony, which Jason talked about a couple weeks ago. They'd bring water up from the Pool of Siloam near the COD and pour it out in a flask in the Temple area.Another thing to remember is Sukkot is in October. No rain for 6 months prior.“Plan an outdoor wedding anytime between April 15–Sept 30 and you don't have to pray that it won't rain at your wedding.” (At least not water, sometimes it rains rockets in the summer––like right now).During Sukkot though, it almost always rains. Pretty much every year it rained right at Sukkot. So in that context Jesus says: “Come to me and drink, and out of your heart will flow rivers of living water” (John 7:38).Like going to the Mall of America at Christmas time. There's Santa Clauses, trees, decorations, Christmas music, and someone stands up and says, “I am the ultimate gift-giver. Everything you have has been given to you from me. I'm Santa Clause.”Jason talked last week about John 7:53–8:11 is not part of the Scriptures. It's not in the earliest manuscriptsIt has unique words found nowhere else in JohnIt has a unique styleIt's not quoted in early patristic writings up to the fourth century ADAnd it appears in 5 different places in manuscript tradition, meaning it was a “floating narrative” not originally part of the book.So with that in mind, the narrative flows from John 7:52 to 8:12. We're still in the festival of booths and Jesus speaks out in the temple area and says, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”Let's focus on Jesus's statement here for a few minutes.Jesus's Claim: the light of the worldThis is the second “I am…” statement. There are seven in John:I am the bread of life (John 6:35)I am the light of the world (John 8:12)I am the gate (John 10:7)I am the good shepherd (John 10:11)I am the resurrection and the life (John 11:25)I am the way the truth and the life (John 14:6)I am the true vine (John 15:1)These statements explain the character and nature of Jesus. He says it again in 9:5. So chapter 9 seems to me to be connected to chapter 8.Let's look at the significance of Jesus's claim to be the light of the world. In the OT, God is the true “light”:Slide. Ps 27:1 “The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?”Slide. Isa 60:19–22 speaks of a time at the end of the age when the sun is no longer needed because God himself is the light: “The sun shall be no more your light by day, nor for brightness shall the moon give you light; but the Lord will be your everlasting light, and your God will be your glory…the Lord will be your everlasting light.”This is picked up in Rev 21:22–23 “And I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb. And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb.”Why is God often depicted as light? Because HE is the true source of illumination.Slide. His word is also a lamp and light unto our path (Ps 119:105), but that's because it points to the TRUE light––God himself.Slide. Interestingly, in Isaiah the servant––or Messiah––is also depicted as light.Isa 9:2, 6 “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them a light has shined…[and what is this light's name?] Wonderful counselor, mighty God, everlasting father, prince of peace.”Isa 49:6 (servant is a light for the nations)Luke 1:76 Zechariah talks about the light, sunrise, star…that has visited his people from heaven. So the Old Testament says that God is the true light, and his messiah is a light to the nations. When you think about this statement a bit more, you might be tempted to think that Jesus's claim isn't all that significant. Slide. In Matt 5:14 Jesus says to his disciples: “You are the light of the world.”So is Jesus saying anything significant here about himself? To answer the question, let's look at Jesus's statement in light of three contexts: the immediate discussion, the festival in general, and the book as a whole.Context of the DiscussionFirst, notice that Jesus points to himself as the source of light.Listen to Jesus's words again in John 8:12: “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”Jesus points to himself. We can't do that. We point people to God.I think if any one of us were to do that, we'd be blaspheming. The Pharisees believed Jesus was making an “over the top” claim.Jesus's statement strikes a chord with the Pharisees. They say: “You are bearing witness about yourself, your testimony is not true” (John 8:13).“Anybody can say anything they want, but let's see some proof. Who are your references? We want to fact-check.”In 2002 Stephen Spielberg put out a movie called Catch Me if You Can. The movie is based on the real life story of Frank Abagnale, who posed as a commercial airways pilot, a doctor, and a prosecutor. He made all these great claims about who he was, but when the FBI looked into him, they realized he was a total fraud. He had no references––just a big mouth, a lot of confidence, and a lot of nerve. The Pharisees use Jesus's own words against him. In John 5:31 Jesus says, “If I alone bear witness about myself, my testimony is not deemed true.”That goes back to OT law, which said you had to have several witnesses to substantiate somebody's claim (Deut 17:6). Usually that applied to a crime (Deut 19:15), but by NT times it applied to other legal situations. And Jesus doesn't back down.He says, “Yeah, I can give you a reference. How about…God himself?”John 8:18 “I am the one who bears witness about myself, and the Father who sent me bears witness about me.”What does Jesus mean that God the Father bears witness about him?He probably means that “God the Father has borne witness to me the Messiah through the OT scriptures.”And if we wanted to flesh that out, we'd go look at what the OT has to say about the Messiah. But the discussion doesn't go in that direction.Instead of asking Jesus what God the Father has to say about him, they ask, “Where is your father?” (8:19).And Jesus says, “You don't know God the father. If you knew me, you'd know the Father” (8:19).In other words, knowing Jesus means knowing God the Father. In John 14:9 Jesus put it this way, “Whoever has seen me has seen the [otherwise invisible] Father.”Knowing Jesus means knowing God the Father because Jesus is God. So, the Pharisees believed he was making an “over the top claim” in saying he is the light of the world, and in the discussion, Jesus doesn't back down. But then he even goes further than that.As the narrative continues, Jesus claims to be able to do things that only God can do.Jesus claims to be a co-judge with God (John 8:16)Jesus claims to have come down to earth from God's presence and therefore is not from this world (John 8:23, 42)Jesus claims to forgive people of sins (John 8:36)Jesus claims that God glorifies him (John 8:54); shouldn't it be the other way around?Jesus claims to be the “I am” of Isa 44:11, 25––who in that context is God (John 8:58)SummarySo, as the discussion continues, Jesus doesn't back down. He advances the Jews' suspicion about who he was claiming to be. He is the source of light, not just a reflection.Context of the FestivalWhen his statement is also heard within the context of the festival they were celebrating, his words take on even more significance.First, let's look at where Jesus makes this statement. John 8:20 says he made the statement in the treasury of the temple.Part of the Court of the Women where the Mishnah says there were thirteen trumpet shaped containers to collect offerings. This was where he was when he saw the widow put her two mites into one container (Mark 12:41–44).The reason this location is significant is because at the Feast of Booths they also lit four massive lamps in a pretty pompous ceremony. The Mishnah says that during the Sukkot Festival, there were in the court of the women in Jerusalem golden candlesticks with golden bowls on top of them. The younger priests would take oil and light them in a ceremony. The Talmud indicates the candlesticks were 50 cubits high––that's 75 feet tall; half the full height of the temple. Picture. The Mishnah says that, “There was not a courtyard in Jerusalem that did not reflect the light of the house of water-drawing [reference to the water ceremony]” (Sukkah 5.3).And then they had this ceremony. Let me read a little more from the Mishnah:“Men of piety and good works used to dance before them with burning torches in their hands, singing songs and praises. And countless Levites played on harps, lyres, cymbals and trumpets and instruments of music on the fifteen steps leading down from the Court of the Israelites to the court of the women, corresponding to the Fifteen Songs of Ascents in the Psalms; upon them the Levites used to stand with instruments of music and make melody.”“They went on until they reached the gate that leads out to the east, they turned their faces to the west and said, ‘Our fathers when they were in this place turned with their backs toward the Temple of the Lord and their faces toward the east, and they worshipped the sun toward the east; but as for us, our eyes are turned toward the Lord.”“They used to repeat the words, ‘We are the Lord's, and our eyes are turned to the Lord.'” (Sukkah 5.4).So the people had this big ceremony at Sukkot in which they faced east where the high places of the past were and remembered the idolatry of the Israelites. 1 Kgs 11:7 “Then Solomon built a high place for Chemosh the abomination of Moab, and for Molech the abomination of the Ammonites, on the mountain east of Jerusalem.”Then they turn around, have this light ceremony, there's dancing and singing, light is shining all throughout Jerusalem, the Jews say, “Our eyes are turned to the Lord…”And it's with this background that Jesus stands up and says, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” (John 8:12).Remember Jesus went up to the festival in the middle of the feast (John 7:14).So it's probably not right after they lit the lamps, but all this was still fresh in their mind. He says it in the temple area. Now that's a bold statement in this context. The Jews are saying, “We don't want to be idolaters anymore, we want to worship God only,” and Jesus waves his hands, points to himself and says, “I am the light…not of the neighborhood, village, city, Jews…but of the WORLD.”He doesn't say I'll point you to the true light. Doesn't say I know who the true light is.He says I am the light of the world. So while the Jews are very careful about who they are pledging allegiance to, Jesus steps up into the temple area under the massive lamps that are burning, and says, “Look to me. I am the light.”Context of the BookJohn starts out his book with Jesus the light, and there, Jesus is God:John 1:3–4 “All things were made through him [the word], and without him was not anything made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men.John 1:9–10 “The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made through him.”So in John, the true light that has come into the world is Jesus––who was with God before the world began, and who created all things.Putting all those contexts together, we see that Jesus is claiming to be the source of light. Just as God is light, Jesus is light. He's not just a good Galilean rabbi, he is God himself––the true light.ApplicationIt might seem obvious to us Christians that God is the true light or illumination in this world, but this is not the case outside of the Christian worldview.Western society is very much influenced by rationalism:This worldview was heavily developed in the Enlightenment period, where “coming to the light” meant using your reason and rational faculties (rather than emotion or tradition) to truly know about the world, one's self, and everything else in the cosmos.By thinking logically and using the scientific method, one truly comes “to know.”Rational thinking pulls you out of the darkness and brings you into the light. You can think of a philosopher like Rene Descartes who pushed the idea of rationalism for knowing truth. He wrote several books on how to think clearly and soundly in order to arrive at truth, or “enlightenment.”So according to a rationalistic worldview, your mind––which is logic or correct thinking––is the light of the world that guides you.Our culture today is also very much influenced by emotionalism (today even maybe more than rationalism):David Hume, another philosopher, emphasized feelings, emotions, and sentiments. He said that moral judgments themselves ultimately rest on ‘some internal sense or feeling which nature has made universal in the whole species.'So reason is second to the role of moral feelings or sentiments. You don't have to think very hard to see how much this worldview has impacted our society today.I can identify however I feel like identifying––who are you to tell me I'm wrong? If I feel like behaving in a certain way, who are you to tell me I'm wrong? So in an emotionalistic worldview your feelings are the light of the world that guide you. Jesus blows both of those out of the water. His claim is that HE is the guiding light of the world. Many of Jesus's claims and works defy rationalism.Rationalism doesn't leave a lot of room for a God-man.Rationalism doesn't leave a lot of room for a dead man to come back to life.He also destroys emotionalism.Jesus says in Matt 16:24 “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.”I don't like that. My emotions say, “Put me first, then I'll be happy!”Living with my girlfriend before I'm married might “feel” like the right thing to do, but that's not what Jesus advocates. We can ask the question: what is your beacon of light in your life? What is the source of truth in your life?Is it your mental capabilities?Your emotions?Or do you recognize that this God-man, Jesus, is the ultimate source of truth? But Jesus doesn't stop with an “ontological” statement about himself. He places a demand on people: John 8:12b“Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”Jesus's Demand: Follow HimExample: Imagine waking up in the middle of the night on a small ship and everybody who was on the ship with you is mysteriously gone. You look around and all you see is water. It just so happens, though, that you have some sailing experience, so you would know how to use a nautical chart if you had one. So you work your way up to the wheelhouse, open up the cabinet, and all the nautical charts for that part of the ocean are actually there. And it also happens to be a perfectly clear night. You can see the north star shining clearly in the sky, so you could line up the charts perfectly to know which direction to sail. Imagine how stupid it would be if you just pulled the shades down in the wheelhouse, threw the maps away, and said, “I'm just doing to do my own thing. I think I'll sail this way.”The map and the star would do you no good. You have to act on it for it to help you. Your knowledge would be useless if it wasn't applied. That's what Jesus demands of us here. Whoever follows me doesn't walk in darkness. There's an active part of it.And when Jesus says you'll have the “light of life,” he means you'll have the “light that produces life.” In other words if you follow Jesus, you'll have eternal life.So what's the question? What does it mean to follow Jesus? It doesn't mean works get you into heaven. Two chapters earlier Jesus says in the Bread of Life sermon:John 6:29 “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent”.John 12:46 “I have come into the world as light, so that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness.”On the other hand, truly believing in him will change your life.Jesus says in John 15:8 that the father is glorified when we bear much fruit and in so doing we prove to be his disciples. So following Jesus means believing, but true belief will alter the course of your life. It's not just knowing the north star exists, it's actually following it.I met a guy in Israel a few years ago called Tony Simon. My wife had known him for years, but this was the first time I met him. Well in that first conversation he was telling me about a person he met and how he was evangelizing to him, then later the person said, “Hey, it's OK, you don't have to evangelize to me, I'm a Christian.” And Tony said, “What? Well why didn't you try to share the gospel with me?” And the guy said, “Well do I have to share with everyone?”That story always stuck with me because this was the only time I met him.Tragically killed in Iraq a couple years later smuggling Bibles into Iraq.So the one time I met him he was telling me about Jesus. The only thing, really, that I know about him, is that he was a follower of Jesus.Would people say that about you? Even if they only met you one time? What's the one thing they would associate with you?For some in this room following Jesus might mean:Breaking up with a boyfriend or girlfriend who is not pointing you to Jesus.Investing a little less in your work, and a little more in the things of heaven.Putting away the alcohol or repenting of a particular sin.Spending more time in prayer. It might mean a major life change, or a small change.TobyMac has a song that says “I want to be rich in love, rolling deep, loaded in friends and family.”I'll add to that and say, let's be rich in following Jesus.Let's be rich in following the one who said, “Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
https://mind-core.com/ (Matt Rosenthal) is the CEO of Mindcore Technologies and a spiritual leader. Higher purpose, value, and SQ (spiritual intelligence) are all a part of Matt's skillset. Growing up in what he deemed unusual circumstances, Matt's father passed away when he was 12. He came from an impoverished upbringing that inspired him to rise above and become successful. Along the way, he discovered that he had an inherent entrepreneurial side that he had never been aware of. Matt says, “I always had a tremendous amount of creativity. My journey was a traumatic childhood and figuring out how to survive along the way.” Matt describes the countless mistakes he made in life, giving him the wisdom that he carries today. He detailed his spiritual awakening taking place by accident. Matt says, “I fell into it. I always felt like I had ideas and I wanted to make money. I was an engineer, and I was very technical, so I started doing side work for people. It began to build up.” Matt found an incredible amount of stimulation and confidence in his passion for IT. He was working outside of the corporate environment, problem-solving within IT, and soon discovered that this was his dream. The creativity invoking challenges that he faced servicing clients in his side work paved the way towards his inspiration for current projects like Mindcore. Matt says, “Ultimately, it ended up that I was making 3 times as much with my side business as I was at my regular job. I didn't have to go through what a lot of people go through which is starting something up. I just ran with it at that point. I was like, I'm never going back to work for anybody.” Today Matt's primary focus involves tending to his people in an incredibly loving and authentic way. In Matt's words, “I spend a lot of time coaching and teaching the people that work at my company. To work at my company, you have to share the same belief system. It starts with a belief, and the belief is that we're all on the ship going the same direction. I spend more time coaching and giving therapy at my company than anything else.” It's leadership like Matt's that creates purpose and evolution of the family tree within companies that we all yearn for today. A leader that bases his most core methodology on finding like-minded think tanks that operate from the same place of care that he does. He has a brand new podcast, “Dig In” with self-made business people. What You'll Hear: Larry was raised Catholic, but at age 13 was invited to a Protestant youth retreat where someone showed him the Gospel going through the Bible and Larry was saved Larry and his wife had their first child Linley, who as an infant had an incident while in doctoral care that resulted in her having challenges throughout her life. Larry became very angry at God but then read John 9 where Jesus says that the blind man was blind so the God's glory could be shown. Larry realized God had a different plan than he did. Larry realized he was not in control and that he had been too self reliant and self-centered. Larry's first job was working for his Dad's construction company Larry went to school for Engineering and then went to Law School and worked for Baker Hughes where he was mentored by Jim Woods Jim would ask questions in a way that would lead you to your own right answer Break around 27:38 In Matt 25:20-28, Jesus described servant leadership as opposed to the typical top-down leadership model Larry has identified 5 key characteristics of servant leadership, using the acronym CLEAN If you're not living life the way God intended you to do, you're wasting your life and your time These principles apply to every relationship C = Commitment L= Listening (key to Larry being the first boss on the Undercover Boss Reality TV Show) E = Empathy - it's the magic that changes everything, this is the opposite of the self-centered social media we live in today A = Accountability N = Notice (noticing others and noticing ourselves) Larry always viewed business as the largest untapped ministry opportunity anywhere Go to www.LarryOdonnell.com

Micah 4 speaks of the latter days, and other prophecies. But in chapter 5 the prophet specifies by name the town where the future King will be born. In Matt 2 and John 7 we learn many people were expecting Messiah to come from this small unimportant town called Bethlehem. He will bring peace with God and peace within the Kingdom. So here we are in session #4 of the M.O.V.E. challenge! It's now time to net the butterflies and put all of this into practice! Our faith must be activated through application which requires ACTION! All too often, we pray prayers then turn around a millisecond later and negate them with disbelief that they can actually happen for us! Well, guess what, sister? We are in good company, because this was the #1 thing that disciples were rebuked by Jesus! But guess what? He chose them despite their unbelief, and He chose you, too! In Matt 8: 26, we see lack of the disciples' faith when they cry to Jesus, "We are going to die!" They spoke as if they were doomed already, declaring that death was inevitable! You may have heard the quote, "Ships don't sink because of the water around them; ships sink because of the water that gets in them. Don't let what's happening around you get inside you and weigh you down." This is indeed a biblical principle, as Jesus reminds us that storms are inevitable, yet we must be at peace, for He has overcome the world! John 16:33 Here is a simple formula to exercise your faith and put God's Word into action: Pray=problem+God's promise=POWER! When we pray, it's fine to share your problems with God, but follow them by one of the 7000+promises in God's Word to activate POWER and infuse FAITH into your situation! So sister friend, let's get up and get moving! It's time to exercise your faith and body, honoring Him with the first fruit of your day! Sister, if you're interested in connecting with God in a deeper more meaningful way and wanting to commit your health to His hands as an act of worship, then the join fellow mountain M.O.V.E.R.S. for a 3 week course where we will put all of this into action. Click here to sign up and learn more. We begin Tuesday, April 6 @6AM EST! "Our Health May Be Created by the Light from Outside, but It All Begins with the Light from Within." Matt Maruca is the Founder and CEO of Ra Optical. As a child Matt struggled constantly with debilitating headaches, allergies, and gut issues. He spent years trying Western medical drugs, Eastern diets and herbs, and modern diets and supplements to no avail, but everything changed when he learned about the role of mitochondria in producing energy and maintaining health in the body. Matt's research led to the understanding that all chronic diseases manifest when mitochondria are severely damaged, and at the root of his own health issues. This led to the realization of why his own mitochondria had become compromised. In Matt's own words: "Mitochondria are “electromagnetic” in nature, which means that their ability to process food and make energy is controlled by light. Every night, a hormone called melatonin helps to repair our mitochondria while we sleep." "The problem was, I was sabotaging myself with my late-night TV, phone, and computer use, destroying my melatonin level and my mitochondria. The Blue Light frequencies in devices mimic the sun and tricked my brain into thinking it was daytime and that I didn’t need to sleep. I had to find a way to reset my circadian rhythm so my mitochondria could get the rest and repair needed." This would become the origin of Ra Optics. Prior to the Canucks game against the Montreal Canadians on Monday night, this episode was going to be titled "Sens-ational Snagglepuss." And after the loss, where the Canucks looked so uninspired, things changed. Are the Canucks truly a "have-not" team in the North Division? Or is it simply some voodoo when they play the Habs in action? In Matt's last show in the co-host chair, he shares a few thoughts with Chris & Anna. Learn more about your ad choices. A command is an order, a compelling task given to an inferior. When you add ‘-ment’ to the end you get another word = Commandment. Commandment means a divine rule that must be obeyed, especially one handed down by God like the Ten Commandments. The Hebrew and Greek literally are translated as “The Ten Words.” Ten Commandments, not the 10 suggestions. Does God have the right to command us to do anything? The Jewish people made a covenant with God. It was a legal binding agreement. God kept up His end of the bargain but the Israelites did not. NIV commentary says, God’s covenant people are to render complete submission, allegiance and obedience to Him out of gratitude for His mercies, reverence for His sovereignty, and trust in His continuing care.Jesus reduced to two commandments. Love God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength (covers commandments 1-4) and love your neighbor as yourself (overs commandments 5-10). Mark 12:28-31.Many might think that because of grace, our need to follow the commands strictly is not necessary; but Jesus actually taught an even stricter adherence. In Matt 5, the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus said He did not come to abolish the Law but to fulfill it. He said to break God’s commandments inwardly is equivalent to breaking them outwardly.1. You shall have no other gods before me. No deity, real or imagined is to rival the one true God in our heart and life. Anything that takes a higher priority in your life than God.2. You shall not make for yourself an idol, you shall not bow down to them or worship them. God says He is a jealous God and this is a jealous love. He wants all our love to go to Him.3. You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God. By profaning His name or swearing falsely by it. Jesus said when we pray that we should honor God’s name, hallowed be His name. 4. Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Having completed His work of creation, God rested on the seventh day and we are to observe the same pattern in service of God in creation. Jesus said that the Sabbath day was created for us, not us for it. 5. Honor your father and your mother. Honor means to prize highly, care for, show respect, and obey. The first commandment with a promise. 6. You shall not murder. The Hebrew word refers to a premeditated and deliberate act. Jesus said, anyone who is even angry with his brother will be in danger of the fire of hell.7. You shall not commit adultery. Jesus said, anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.8. You shall not steal. There is no justification for stealing in any way, whether on your taxes, supplies from your workplace, fruit off your neighbor’s tree, and words like plagiarism.9. You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor. Basically, do not lie. Here, Jesus elaborates on oath-taking in Mt 5:33-37, saying let your yes be yes and your no be no, anything beyond this come from the evil one. 10. You shall not covet anything that belongs to your neighbor. To desire something with evil motivation. God’s commandments aren’t there to punish or restrict us. Deut 10:12-13 says, what does the Lord your God ask of you but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all His ways, to love Him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and to observe the Lord’s commands and decrees that I am giving you today for your own good. God’s commandments can be described as warning signs for life. Life is like a mine field. God doesn’t say don’t enjoy life but He does say that there are dangers that you are going to want to avoid. Follow His path through the mine field and you will live. If you take away the commandments then you will follow the wrong path through life and it will lead to death.

How would you know if you have ADHD? Dr. Arwen Podesta, MD, ABPN, FASAM, ABIHM, Director of Psychiatry at Podesta Wellness, joins the podcast to discuss the root causes of ADHD, along with an integrative treatment approach. Building Us is a weekly podcast hosted by Erik Garcia, CFP® and Dr. Matt Morris, LPC, LMFT.Episode Highlights:Matt introduces Dr. Arwen Podesta. (1:22)Arwen shares her background. (1:40)Arwen shares that she’s a board-certified adult psychiatrist with sub-specializations in integrative and holistic medicine, addiction medicine, and forensic psychiatry. (1:48)Arwen mentions that she’s a clinical faculty at Tulane and LSU. (4:47)Arwen shares that Hurricane Katrina was a traumatic couple of weeks on the ground in New Orleans, from the actual storm disaster and breakwater flooding. (8:58)Arwen explains a new diagnosis called Chronic Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. (9:37)Did Arwen foresee the same chronic post-traumatic stress across all demographics? (15:37)Arwen mentions that if the place you start is lower because of socio-economic background or trauma in your childhood, you're already behind when the general trauma occurs. (16:11)Arwen shares that the traumatic disorder is having a fear of it happening again or a fear of re-experiencing, and it disrupts your life and your ability to plan. (18:29)Matt mentions that it’s very hard to diagnose someone accurately when they're using substances daily. (27:30)Arwen shares that the symptoms of ADHD must be present before the age of 12 and plenty of people don't get into the testing system until someone recognizes it. (28:58)What are some of the root causes of ADHD that Arwen is interested in? (31:13)Arwen shares that there are thoughts that some medicines and some neurotransmitters are responsible for certain elements and some micronutrients are responsible for certain symptoms. (38:48)Arwen mentions that she has a fantastic nutritionist who’s been doing functional medicine for a long time and works closely well with children and adults that have any nutritional symptomatology. (41:08)Arwen mentions that classic Attention Deficit Disorder is characterized by inattention, hyperactivity, and disorganization. (42:31)Arwen shares that ADHD is thought to be a decrease in dopamine and dopamine deficiency, sometimes ADHD might be more dopamine and serotonin deficiency. (45:56)Arwen shares that each one of her patients is probably magnesium deficient and she administers them a lot of magnesium, which is calming but also, helps with heart, health, focus, and sleep. (51:19)Arwen mentions that there's a new medicine called Dayvigo, which is a sleeping aid. (51:40)Arwen mentions that Iron plays a key role in dopamine metabolism. (53:12)Arwen thinks that food additives are a huge issue and plenty of people know that hyperactivity comes with some of the additives. (54:23)Arwen thinks that for all mental health issues, if we don't get to the root cause, it'll keep coming back, and keep causing disruption and problems. (57:31)Arwen shares that there are online resources that are looking into functional medicine or integrative medicine. (1:01:01)Arwen mentions that food allergies can cause what looks like ADHD. (1:01:27)Arwen shares that gut health is a huge component, not just allergies but, the bacteria that are in your gut. (1:01:55)How has COVID-19 changed the delivery of mental health services in New Orleans? (1:02:43)In Matt’s opinion, protecting his sleep is vital. Therefore, he loves the idea of paying attention to what may be underneath our attention issues. (1:08:36)Erik thinks that awareness plays a huge role, but also understanding and becoming aware of your tendencies, or if you have ADHD or someone you're in a relationship with has ADHD, learning to relate to them. (1:09:05)Key Quotes:“15 years after Katrina, we have some robust health care systems. We could have more, but we have advanced our ability to treat folks with mental health needs with all different types of therapy, psychology, trauma treatment, medical treatment, psychiatry, and primary care.” - Dr. Arwen Podesta“If there's a combination in some capacity, that doesn't mean everything is protected by changing your diet, health, and lifestyle. You still might succumb to your genetics, but there's a genetic component, biological component, and an environmental component in most or all diseases.” - Dr. Arwen Podesta“There are new barriers, but it doesn't mean that this isn't working. The private patients that have access and means, and can sit somewhere with a good Wi-Fi connection, a lot of them are doing well and I am very much enjoying getting into their homes and seeing them home virtually.” - Dr. Arwen Podesta“Look into the lifestyle and you know, between nutrition, mindfulness, and nature I think we could get probably a large subset of folks to not feel like they're suffering from these brain issues.” - Dr. Arwen PodestaResources Mentioned:Erik Garcia, CFP®Dr. Matt Morris, LPC, LMFTGarcia Financial GroupMatt Morris & AssociatesDr. Arwen Podesta, MD, ABPN, FASAM, ABIHMPodesta WellnessLearn To Live
The Kingdom of God Suffers Violence Understanding the Kingdom Series | UTK 82 Biblical Life TV In Matt. 11:11-15 and Luke 16:13-17, Jesus revealed two types of individuals: (1) Those that accept Messiah and are pressing into the Kingdom, and (2) Those that have rejected Messiah and will use violence to create a utopia without Him. Historically, the words of Jesus hold true from the religious leaders in New Testament times to today's humanists/communists. For those that have surrendered to Messiah, the Book of Hebrews reveals three elements needed to become a part of the Kingdom that cannot be shaken: Grace, reverence, and godly fear. Right now, a lot of schools are doing online learning over video chats. And that can be really tough, not having the physical interaction and the motivation that comes with actually being at school. In Matt 7, Jesus calls us to pray to God and actually ask for what we need and want, which can […]

Being in a management position in any industry can often leave you overwhelmed. Striking a balance between your work and personal life is already difficult. So how does a manager take parental leave? Matt Newkirk—the engineering lead for Etsy’s International Customer Experience initiative—has worked out some of the kinks. I’m the father of three girls. During their birth, I was fully involved in startups and was never able to take parental leave. Not only did I miss out, but as a manager I feel I can’t help my team plan a successful leave because I never experienced it. So in this episode of Simple Leadership, Matt shares how to plan and prepare for parental leave. Anyone in leadership can benefit from his experiences. Outline of This Episode [1:14] Matt’s background in coding + role at Etsy [3:48] Why two-way communication is important [6:33] Matt’s advice for a new manager [8:20] Taking parental leave as a manager [12:57] Parental leave can empower your employees [15:15] How to prepare for parental leave [18:07] How do you tell your boss you’re taking leave [19:19] You need to have a reintegration plan [25:29] How does a manager support employee leave? [31:46] Supporting employees who are parents in a pandemic [34:57] How to navigate “work from home” in leadership [38:06] Parental leave needs to be normalized [41:30] How to connect with Matt Newkirk How can a manager take parental leave? Matt has two children, a 4-year-old son and a 2-year-old girl. He started at Etsy when his son was 7 weeks old. He was fortunate to receive some parental leave, but there was an odd tension. He was just forming relationships with his team and it felt strange to disappear. So he took that leave very sporadically, almost as if he was taking vacations here and there. Most of the decisions were made before or after that. Very little true delegation had to happen. But when his daughter was born, he wanted to take his full leave. He’s very fortunate that Etsy provides 6 months of parental leave. It was a great opportunity to reconnect with his family and disengage from work. When anyone in leadership takes time off, its news. But it is possible. You want to role model that it’s okay to take parental leave. It shouldn’t just be a benefit on paper that no one uses. How can taking parental leave empower your employees? Listen to hear Matt’s take. You HAVE to plan your leave When possible, you have to build out a plan for your parental leave. Matt was managing many different teams with different scenarios. He notes that sometimes it’s as easy as delegating one person to carry out a task. But it needs to be clear to stakeholders and delegates who is taking on what responsibility. It took him 2–3 months to iron out the details for his leave. He recommends to try and have this done at least one month before you take leave—in case your baby comes early. When should you start planning? Around the time you’re comfortable telling your boss. These plans don’t expire. So if you wrap up a project earlier than you thought, it’s great. Before you leave, Matt says “I think your job before that happens is to make sure that your reports trust you enough, that they don't have to wonder what's going to happen.” You don’t have to think about missing out on opportunities or ask: “Am I going to lose my job? Am I going to get reassigned? Am I going to get the side-eye for the next six months?” Your job is to make sure that none of those things happen. You need to have a reintegration plan A reintegration plan is just as important as planning your leave. In Matt’s case, he knew he was coming back to a reorganization and a new boss. He wasn’t sure how the units would fit together. So the first thing he did was contact his new boss and let him know when he was coming back. Then he thought about how he’d spend his time. He took some strategies from the book “The First 90 Days” and planned to spend the first 30 days figuring stuff out, listening to his team, and understanding perceived problems. Then he spent the next 30 days building hypotheses, testing them with new data, etc. In the last 30 days, you begin to act on that research. He emphasizes that it all comes down to communicating effectively. Matt also talks about how the transition back isn’t always smooth and shares how he adjusted to his role in a very changed company. How a manager should support their team’s parental leave Matt notes when someone tells you they’re going out on leave, your one job is to make them feel at ease. Let them know you’re there to support them. Then figure out when they’re going to share that information. Set up time to figure out delegation plans. Once they’re out, find out what information they want from you while they’re out. You can front-load some expectations. Other than expected communications, leave them alone. Let them enjoy their leave. Matt also emphasizes that you should be flexible about their return schedule. Do not push back projects for them to handle when they get back from leave. Have a transitional return schedule that starts on a Thursday or Friday and a part-time first week back. Do not make any assumptions. They come back as different people. Some have difficult transitions, others are easy. Don’t make assumptive comments like “I hope you had a great time” or “I bet you’re exhausted.” Above all, don’t reduce their opportunities. How else can you support your employees through a leave? How do you support your team’s work from home in a pandemic? Where can leadership receive support? Matt shares his thoughts on these questions and more—so listen to the whole episode. Matt talks about how he was able to land the job of television play-by-play announcer for Northern Kentucky University. At first he was assigned men’s and women’s soccer and then added women’s basketball to his schedule. Matt talks about his beginnings in the media business as a reporter for the Wilmington News Journal (https://www.wnewsj.com) as a high school student under the tutelage of sports editor Mark Huber. Matt and Brady talk about the willingness to work for free in order get a foot in the door. In Matt’s case he became the public address announcer as a high school freshman at Blanchester (Ohio) High School. Matt graduated from Blanchester High School in 1997 as the valedictorian and enrolled at Ohio University. While at OU he studied at the illustrious Scripps School of Journalism (https://www.ohio.edu/scripps-college/journalism) and worked as a disc jockey at the campus radio station. Matt talks about being burned out with school and dropping out of college after his sophomore year. He acknowledges that in hindsight it wasn’t a great decision but he was able to find work back home in Blanchester. His first media job after leaving OU was returning to the Wilmington News Journal. He would eventually made the jump to the Wilmington radio station WSWO-FM and WKFI-AM. Apparently there was a big rivalry between the newspaper and the radio station in a small market like Wilmington and Matt felt the wrath of that situation. Matt developed into the news, sports and farm director at the radio station. Yes, that’s correct I said the Farm Director. Unfortunately he no longer uses those skills in his work today but it was an interesting and important position in the Wilmington market. Like most small radio stations WSWO-FM and WKFI-AM were bought out in the massive media consolidations that happened in the early to mid-2000’s. Matt look back on his most memorable day on the job at the radio station when he and his co-host Jerry “Too Tall” Jennings where on the air reporting on the 9/11 tragedy. After the radio station closes and the newspaper job was not an option, Matt talks about being out of the business for a few years supporting himself by working in a factory. Matt bounces back and returns into the media field by streaming high school football games for both Blanchester and nearby Goshen High School. Eventually Matt is able to mend fences at the Wilmington News Journal and started covering high school football again. In particular he is given the assignment as the beat reporter for Clinton-Massie High School and its run to back-to-back state championships in 2012 and 2013. Brady and Matt talk about the current state of coverage that high school sports get in the local media. They discuss how the coverage has diminished while the demand has increased. Brady asks Matt to discus one the great high school football coaches in the state of Ohio, Dan McSurley of Clinton-Massie. Through his coverage, Matt has a unique perspective of this program that has produced multiple state championships using a unique offensive scheme. In 2014, at the age of 35, Matt decides to make the decision to return to college and earn his degree. He enrolls as a non-tradition student at Northern Kentucky University where he makes valuable connections and takes advance of some great opportunities. While at NKU, he becomes the sports editor of The Northerner (https://www.thenortherner.com) which is the student newspaper. This give Matt the opportunity to interact with Bryan McEldowney and Brad Pope for the NKU Athletic Communications and Media Services Department. Matt also takes classes in the Electronic Media & Broadcasting program at NKU in order to help keep his budding broadcasting career. Wes Akers becomes a mentor and helps Matt get his opportunity to broadcast NKU soccer games. Matt also gives thanks to both Brad Pope and Bryan McEldowney for actually approving his hire as a broadcaster for NKU on the ESPN Digital Platform known as ESPN+ (https://plus.espn.com) Matt talks about the student television production run by Wes Akers and Bill Farro at Northern Kentucky and how it’s one of the tops not only in the Horizon League but the entire country. Matt and Brady go into some detail about the challenges of running a student production and what a great job those students do under the tutelage of Wes and Bill. Matt gets a chance to talk about some big moments and highlights during his time as the NKU women’s basketball play-by-play announcer. His personal favorite is of course his call of NKU defeating Youngstown State on a buzzing-beating shot by Molly Glick. Kyle and Matt serve in New Mexico, which means (at least as of June 18th) their churches are allowed to host gatherings at no more than 25%. In Kyle's case, their sanctuary is large enough to offer one service. In Matt's case, they have to offer two services, and are still at or over capacity. Nevertheless, after a few weeks of navigating these waters, they've learned a few things. KIB 259 – New Wineskins for New Fire Kingdom Intelligence Briefing The Almighty is about to do something new. In Matt. 9:14-17, Jesus shared about the need for new wineskins before the new wine could be given. With each major move of God, there was a time of reflection, fasting, and repentance that led to the renewal of the spirit and heart. We are in such a moment, and the Remnant needs restoration to prepare them for the next phase. Change is coming. Are we willing to spend the time preparing our hearts for fresh fire? Dr. Michael Lake is the Chancellor and Founder of Biblical Life College and Seminary. He is the author of the best-selling books, The Shinar Directive: Preparing the Way for the Son of Perdition, and The Sheeriyth Imperative: Empowering the Remnant to Overcome the Gates of Hell. You may recall that a few months back, I interviewed Dr. David Cox (@davidjcox_). In our discussion, we spent a fair amount of time talking about the literature on the use of psychedelics for the treatment of a variety of behavioral and mental health challenges. I recently got the opportunity to extend this conversation with Dr. Matthew Johnson (@Drug_Researcher). Matt Johnson is a Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at John Hopkins University, and he's been a leading figure in this area of research for over 15 years. His expertise in this area is so well regarded that he's been sought out by media outlets such as (takes deep breath): The New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, Globe and Mail, Daily Mail, USA Today, Chicago Tribune, San Francisco Chronicle, Denver Post, Baltimore Sun, CNN, CBS News, NBC News, The Atlantic, Newsweek, Vanity Fair, Marie Claire, Vogue, Whole Living, The Washingtonian, Scientific American, Nature, Vice, Insider, Inverse, Healthline, Psychology Today (pause to inhale...) 60 Minutes, CNN’s Wolf Blitzer Situation Room, Fox Business News’ Kennedy, the Dr. Oz Show, PBS’ Retro Report, Labyrint (television show in the Netherlands), Spectrum News NY1, the BBC World Service, NPR’s Morning Edition, NPR’s Kojo Nnamdi Show, New Zealand Radio, and Newstalk Radio Ireland... just to name a few. Matt has also been featured in a special episode of The Tim Ferriss Show on this very topic. As such, I'm a little more than humbled to chat with him on Behavioral Observations! In our chat, we did a quick overview of Delay Discounting, talked about decision making with condom usage, and the behavioral economics of cannabis. As an aside, we've done quite a few shows on Behavioral Economics. Here's a quick list of them if you want to get really up to speed: Session 17, A Behavioral Economics Primer, Derek Reed. Session 114, The Behavioral Economics of Toilet Paper, Derek Reed. The aforementioned David Cox episode. Session 11: Obesity, Food Insecurity, Behavioral Economics, and Mindful Eating, Erin Rasmussen. Session 2: Science and Pseudoscience, Steve Lawyer. Back to this show, Matt and I spent a large part of our chat discussing his groundbreaking work in the area of psychedelics. We really get into the weeds, as it were, of how these studies are done, and discuss everything from recruiting participants, the timing of these trips, how participants are supported through their experiences, bad trips, transformative experiences, hypothesized mechanisms of action, what these treatments will look like in five years, and much, much more. And before I forget, here are some links to additional readings that we referenced: MacCorquodale and Meehl (1948). Article on Hypothetical Constructs. Rasmussen and Newland (2009). Quantification of the Anti-Punishment Effect in Humans Using the Generalized Matching Equation. Hopkinspsychedelic.org, a clearing house of all the cool research that's being done at JHU. We close with a fun discussion of the concept of impulsivity. In Matt's view, as a psychological construct, the term isn't very useful, and we get into how he came to that conclusion. I have a membership program for the podcast; think of it as a DIY Patreon… It’s been running for a few years now, and it costs the princely sum of $9/month. Members get access to a private FB group in which they are able to get nearly instantaneous access to the videos of these podcast interviews. The best part is that members get the raw feed. That means no ads, and none of the introductory comments. You just get right to the interview. Another cool thing we do is hold Zoom Hangouts with former guests. We do this about 6 times a year, and it works like this: we schedule a Zoom call, a former guest comes on and joins us, and the members have the opportunity to ask them questions directly.
Have you ever thought about the beauty of God? Splendor and glory can also describe the radiant beauty of God in the bible.God doesn’t have to adorn Himself with beautiful things to make Himself beautiful. He is beautiful and He is the one who makes something beautiful. Apart from God there is no true beauty. Only the beauty that comes from God is eternal and lasting and true.A place God dwells is spoken of as beautiful. Psalms say splendor and majesty are before Him; strength and glory are in His sanctuary. From Mt. Zion, perfect in beauty, God shines forth. In Rev 21, John saw the Holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. The foundations of the city walls were decorated with precious stones—jasper, sapphire, emerald, topaz, amethyst, pearls, and pure gold. Royalty mesmerized us and the King of kings is going to dwell in this new Jerusalem. Royal palaces maybe just a taste of what heaven. How does God reveal His beauty in creation. Isn’t His beauty displaying in creation for all to see? I love the beauty of a flower. So much variety, sizes, and colors. Only a beautiful God could create so many beautiful things. In Matt 6:29, Jesus say, consider the lilies, not even Solomon in all His splendor as king was dressed like one of these. God shows beauty in the biggest things and in the smallest things.Consider sky filled with the moon and the stars shining their light all the way to earth. A rainbow makes you want to stop and follow its track across the sky. Lightning displays beautifully power. We love beauty and will spend a lot of money to travel and visit beautiful places. In Hab 3:3-4 it says that His beauty was like the sunrise, rays flashed from His hand where there His power was hidden. How does God reveal His beauty through Jesus? One of the prophetic verses in Isaiah, talking about the Messiah who is Jesus, that he had no beauty (as a man) or majesty to attract us to Him. Jesus was God but He laid His physical glory aside when He came to earth. Three disciples were fortunate to see His true glory displayed up in the mount of transfiguration. Luke 9:29 said that, as He was praying, the appearance of His face changed, and His clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning. Moses and Elijah appeared in all glorious splendor (radiant beauty).Jesus mentioned once about a beauty done for Him. After a woman poured perfume on his body to prepare Him for burial, Jesus said, “She has done a beautiful thing to me.” If you pause a minute and think of Jesus on the cross, you will see sacrificial beauty. After He died and rose again, He visited the earth with His new body and then ascended into heaven and promised to return again. Another verse in Isaiah 42 says that, In that day, The Branch of the Lord will be beautiful and glorious. He will come back in the skies. Finally, how does God reveal His beauty to us in our hearts. Since God’s presence makes things beautiful, how about us? The bible says we are formed in His image. And if you are a believer, His Holy Spirit’s presence dwells in you. He made you beautiful and He gives you beauty. God gives beauty from ashes and he makes all things beautiful in its time. God can give you beauty in your life. He gives beauty to those He loves and He definitely loves you.Our beauty should not come from outward adornment but from your inner self says Peter, an unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit which is of great worth in God’s sight. How do you become beautiful on the inside? When Moses came down from the mountain with the ten commandments, his face was radiant because he had spent time with God. The more time you spend with the Lord, the more beautiful you become.Ps 27:4, One thing I ask of the Lord, this is what I see, that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, and to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord.
The Purpose of Proverbs Proverbs 1:1-7- 1The proverbs of Solomon, son of David, king of Israel: 2To know wisdom and instruction, to understand words of insight, 3to receive instruction in wise dealing, in righteousness, justice, and equity; 4to give prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the youth— 5Let the wise hear and increase in learning, and the one who understands obtain guidance, 6to understand a proverb and a saying, the words of the wise and their riddles. 7The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction. What is Wisdom? "Wisdom is a moral rather than an intellectual quality. To be “foolish” is to be godless (Ps. 14:1; comp. Judg. 19:23; 2 Sam. 13:13). True wisdom is a gift from God to those who ask it (Job 28:12–28; Prov. 3:13–18; Rom. 1:22; 16:27; 1 Cor. 1:17–21; 2:6–8; James 1:5). “Wisdom” in Prov. 1:20; 8:1; 9:1–5 may be regarded not as a mere personification of the attribute of wisdom, but as a divine person, “Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God” (1 Cor. 1:24). In Matt. 11:19 it is the personified principle of wisdom that is meant." V.2- "To know wisdom" Proverbs 4:5–7-"Get wisdom; get insight; do not forget, and do not turn away from the words of my mouth. Do not forsake her, and she will keep you; love her, and she will guard you. The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom, and whatever you get, get insight." Proverbs 7:4-5-"Say to wisdom, “You are my sister,” and call insight your intimate friend, to keep you from the forbidden woman, from the adulteress with her smooth words." Proverbs 8:5-"O simple ones, learn prudence; O fools, learn sense." Proverbs 16:16-"How much better to get wisdom than gold! To get understanding is to be chosen rather than silver." God Almighty, is El Shaddai in Hebrew, meaning invincible power of God. He is all, the most, complete might. Omnipotent meaning all powerful. God the creator is the source of all power. Any power you see comes from Him. Nothing is more powerful than Him. Power never diminishes in Him. He is all power all the time. All the power in all the universe is within Him. When God does something like create a flower or a star in the sky, He doesn’t need more energy to do one or the other. In Him, He can do anything with the same amount of effort as anything else. He can create things out of nothing. As AW Tozer says, in his book Knowledge of the Holy, “all the power required to do all that He wills to do lies in undiminished fulness in His own infinite being.” So if He is an infinite being than His power if infinite. He has the same amount of power in the past, the same amount of power today, and He’ll have the same amount of power in the future. It is hard to comprehend because usually when we think of energy, it has to be recharged. He doesn’t recharge and He doesn’t have to draw on anything else to recharge.Rev 4:8, In John's vision the heavenly creatures say, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come.” He has the same amount of power always. Who was in the past, who is today and who will be in the future. It is eternal power, it doesn’t fade, and it is unlimited.Heb 1:3 says, “The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of His being, sustaining all things by His Powerful word.” Scriptures say that Jesus is The Word and all things were made through Him. If all things were made through Him too then there is power through Jesus Christ. You cannot create the world without power. He would talk to a storm, command it to be still, and it was immediately. In Matt 26:53 Jesus said, “I can call on my Father and He will at once put at my disposal more than 12 legions of angels.” Jesus had all this power with Him. He could do whatever He wanted to do on the earth but He submitted to the Father. Even though He had all this power, He didn’t use it. Because He didn’t come with all His power to destroy man because of their sins, He came with all His power to save man because of their sins. God has so much intense power that He could wipe it all away with the blink of an eye as easily as He created it. Yet, God is so tender. He said a bruised reed He will not break and a smoldering wick He won’t blow out. He is incredibly tender but He is also there with all the power you need to do anything that you need to do. The bible says we will see the Son of God coming on the clouds of the sky, with power and great glory. That will be awesome to see when He comes and returns. But the greatest power of all is seen in the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The power that raised Christ from the dead is that He never died again. He was raised to life and because of His resurrection, we all live too.Rom 8:11 says, “if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, He who raised Christ from the dear will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit, who lives in you.” God has not given you a spirit of fear but of power, of love, and of a sound mind so if the Holy Spirit is living inside of you, this power that raised Christ from the dead lives inside of you. It is the very presence of God. How powerful is the God you believe in? His power has not diminished over time and it never will. If you want to feel secure and safe, then put your life in the hands of this big almighty personal God. I believe in a God who can do anything for me and give me all the strength I need to do to live out this life. He possesses absolute limitless power. His power is divine. His power is only used for His will and His will is good.Living a Radical Life for Jesus means believing that God is Almighty
In Matt’s 5th successive quarantine-themed episode, he gets into a few more pandemic-related topics, from the fun to the not-so-fun: the big dick’d guy in all those ridiculous memes going around right now, the idiotic and harmful politicization of coronavirus, Donald Trump’s most insane tweet yet, why it’s so hard to get concrete information about how to stay safe during this crisis, Bob Dylan’s awful new 17-minute song that QAnon followers believe is for them, the truly strange ‘My Pillow’ guy and all the truly strange shit he’s up to, the problem with believing any one group of people ‘controls the world’— and why ‘Cameo’ needs to change its name to ‘Kaymeo’ ASAP. In Matt 12:37, Jesus talks about justification and condemnation by words. What could He mean by this? Bob and Shawn discuss the context of this verse within the passage (vv 33-37) and explain the meaning of justification here. Plus they discuss enduring and reigning as mentioned in 2 Tim 2:12.
So much parenting wisdom is tucked into this week's episode. First, Val Harrison, The Practically Speaking MOM, reminds moms that INFLUENCE in our child's heart is a PRIVILEGE and thus we must delicately guard it from relationship killers. Then Val looks at the first half of the key elements of learning to live a lifestyle of Feasting with the Father - by helping moms to not get "the cart before the horse." We moms have a tendency to push our kids to a relationship with God when our own relationship with Him is suffering. We must love Him first and then draw the hearts of our children to Him.Read Val's blog post that corresponds to this episode, click here.*Influence is a privilege. We want to continually have a mindset of maintaining the right to influence our child’s heart if we want to continue to have that privilege in their lives on a long-term basis. Don’t waste this privilege. Don’t squander it. Be careful to not allow walls to build up in relationship between parent and child. There are many ways we can lose influence because we allowed relationship killers to infiltrate.Watch out for these relationship killers! They come in as disrespectful attitudes. They sneak in through selfish actions. Parents are often as guilty as children in having disrespectful attitudes and selfish actions. Beware of these sabotages to our family relationships!*Mom, are you out of order? What do kids need most from their mom? They need a mom who is Living a Lifestyle Feasting with the Father in the midst of our worries, fears, celebrations, prayers, decisions...In Matt 22:37, Jesus sums up the law of God's heart, "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength. Then secondly, love your neighbor as yourself." As moms we have a tendency to get those two out of order by thinking that loving on our kids and pushing them to God’s banquet table is more important than us personally loving Him with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength. We need to love God first, then draw the hearts of our children toward Him, instead of pushing them from behind. Pushing them is ineffective. I want God’s kingdom to come in my family’s life, and I need to do that God's way, not mine – being kingdom minded, “how can I help His Kingdom to happen in our family? How can I encourage an atmosphere of heaven on earth, a safe haven for my family, a place of peace and love and joy for my home, and how can I be living out the fulfillment of who God created me to be as a mom? It is by keeping these two commandments in order – loving him first and drawing the hearts of my children to him second.CONNECT with Val:www.PracticallySpeakingMOM.com Public announcements & Resources Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/PracticallySpeakingMom/Val's Private Group: Intentional Mom, Strong FamilyInstagram:@PracticallySpeakingMOM

Matt here. I usually write these posts in the 3rd person, but this episode really hits home for me.99% of my closest friends are camp friends.I had a rough high-school experience. I wasn’t able to find a solid group of friends and never really felt like I had a group of people that loved me for who I really was. Camp changed everything for me.Because of camp, I found out what I was missing in those relationships at home. Camp people got me. Over the course of one, maybe two summers, I felt like I had a community of people that supported me and that I could turn to whenever I was in need. We stayed connected in the off-season and grew closer and closer with every year.Fast-forward 13 years. Every person in mine and my wife’s wedding party was a camp person. We spend every new-years together and talk in a group message almost every day.I’m truly blessed. Now, not every person’s camp experience will like mine. I had the privilege of being the best friend of the director’s son and I was a long-time camper before becoming a staff member. I wasn’t an international staff member and didn’t have to understand both the culture of camp AND the country I was in.My privilege aside. I truly believe that camp is one of the best places to make lifelong friends and that’s why we did a whole podcast episode on it.Tune in to this episode to hear about:Why the conditions at camp are perfect for making friendsHow to make friends at camp this summerWays to have great camp friends and still prioritize your jobA whole lot of other ideas on how to form lifelong connections this summerWe hope you enjoy this episode, and most importantly, find it useful!-If you have any feedback or a suggestion for a future FCC show, send Matt an email at matt@gocamp.pro-Get Ready - Counsellors, do this NOW to level up your counselling skillsOliver: Get a BUNCH of high-quality stickers! In the seventh installment of the MED (Minimum Effective Dose) Masterclass series, Professor Matt discusses how to approach tapering and peaking for a meet or athletic performance using MED principles. In Matt's view, how you peak depends on what training approach you used leading up to the meet. A lifter training in a conjugate or DUP (daily undulating periodization) program will naturally have a longer peak as he must transition from the accumulation and transmutation phases to more specific, lower volume training closer to what he will do the day of the meet. On the other hand, a lifter training in a concurrent program is much closer to being ready for a meet at any given time, because the nature of his programming is more specific to the demands of the meet. Both concurrent and conjugate programs have pros and cons that the lifter and coach must consider, but practically, most lifters will be using a conjugate program that requires a thoughtful approach to peaking. Today on the podcast we have an special conversation hosted by author Carl Anderson with his longtime friend and colleague, author Matt Glover. In Matt’s recent book Craft and Process Studies: Units That Provide Writers with Choice of Genre, he argues that focusing on craft and process teaches students important writing skills while also providing more opportunities for choice of genre. And when students pick their own genre, they become more invested and engage in their work.

Matt Fiske's work explores the intersection of material, science, and ceramic firing process. Experimentation is an important aspect of Matt's studio practice, and focuses on manipulating common materials using uncommon firing conditions. Matt is inspired by the natural phenomena that occur in mineralogy and geology. In Matt's mind’s eye, glaciers give way to icy celadon glazes, volcanoes ooze magma as glazes cascade down curves and roll off edges, crystals grow when conditions are conducive. Daily life, too, plays an important role in what Matt makes and why. The needs of the kitchen are for Matt, like many potters, a useful starting point for conceiving specific forms. Matt also draws from historical Asian ceramics as well as my experiences living in China and Korea. In the end, Matt strives to synthesize complex glazes and surfaces with objects that are as useful as they are beautiful.
