The Business of Meetings – Episode 182 – The Meeting Show is Coming to Asia with David Blansfield We are delighted to introduce David Blansfield today! He is a prominent figure who has been instrumental in molding the events and meetings industry! David is the Executive Vice President and Group Publisher for Northstar Meetings Group. He joins us to share how he got to where he is today, discuss the launch of The Meeting Show in Singapore, and offer his perspective on the transformative impact AI is poised to have on the industry. David brings a wealth of knowledge to today's discussion! His expertise shines as he takes us through the dynamic world of event management and navigates the ever-evolving landscape of trends that shape the meetings industry.  Bio: David manages Northstar Travel Group's meetings brands and events businesses. The Northstar Meetings Group – comprised of brands such as Meetings & Conventions (M&C), Successful Meetings, Meeting News, Incentive, SportsTravel, M&IT, AMI, and M&C Asia, as well as 30 MICE industry events – is the leading source of research, analysis, media, and marketing services to event organizers and hospitality service providers in the US and worldwide. David's story David's early ambition was to become a foreign correspondent for prestigious newspapers. Unfortunately, that had to shift due to economic constraints, so he found a job teaching English in Tokyo and engaged in journalism on the side. That experience broadened his global perspective and deepened his appreciation for cultural differences. After returning to the United States, he transitioned to media entrepreneurship, founding and selling financial magazines. That led to his current role, overseeing the meetings side of things at North Star Travel Group. Positioned to assist event organizers and MICE professionals worldwide, David's expertise bridges the gap between buyers and sellers, facilitating impactful connections within the travel industry. The Significance of Face-to-Face Interactions in a Global Context The pandemic has reinforced the significance of face-to-face interactions, leading to a robust recovery worldwide. This trend, evident in the empirical data and research, highlights the enduring importance of personal connections, especially in international business dealings. Despite technological predictions, the value of in-person experiences remains unparalleled. The demand for face-to-face interactions has surged, contradicting expectations of technology replacing such engagements. That becomes particularly pronounced when navigating diverse cultures and customs.  AI and Changing Industry Dynamics  AI has catalyzed significant changes across various facets of business operations, from automating administrative tasks to revolutionizing customer engagement strategies. David explains that AI tools streamline operational efficiency while freeing up valuable time for businesses to focus on strategic thinking and fostering meaningful client connections. The Role of AI in Event Enhancement  David sheds light on the transformative role that AI has played in enhancing event experiences by sharing a fascinating example from Marina Bay Sands, where they use AI-driven technology to gauge audience engagement in real-time. That provides presenters with tools to tailor their delivery and maintain a captivating presence. The dynamic interaction between technology and human engagement exemplifies the potential of AI in redefining event engagement for both presenters and attendees. The Role of AI in Talent Acquisition and Understanding Clients  With a shift towards a gig economy and an increasing reliance on third-party talent, AI can serve as a formidable ally in augmenting business operations. Automating routine tasks allows business owners to have time to focus their energy on strategic initiatives and meaningful interactions with clients and teams. David emphasizes the integral role of AI in fostering deeper client understanding. Through data-driven insights, AI allows businesses to create highly personalized experiences that cater to individual preferences and needs. A Positive Industry Outlook and Key Trends  Backed by research findings, David emphasizes the optimistic outlook marked by substantial budget growth and plans for expansion. A notable trend he highlights is the growing prevalence of remote work and its impact on the significance of face-to-face events. Sustainability and climate change are also key concerns on the industry's radar, with a collective push towards more environmentally responsible practices and solutions. Lessons from Hawaii and Travelers' Perceptions Drawing from recent events in Hawaii, David illustrates the critical importance of considering geographical contexts and nuanced perceptions within the industry. He recounts an intriguing scenario where travelers' perceptions were influenced by an outbreak in a different location, highlighting the necessity of balanced information. With that, he urges industry professionals to conduct thorough research and offer unwavering support to destinations navigating challenges, ultimately fostering well-rounded perspectives. Core Themes from the Insights of an Industry Expert  The core themes that emerged from David's insights in today's conversation were the transformative power of AI, the promise of elevated event experiences, the evolving gig economy, and the ongoing commitment the industry has demonstrated to sustainability. Honesty, Openness and Learning in the Family Business with KC Crain

Denise talks to KC Crain, President of the privately held media giant, Crain Communications. Navigating the global transformation of the media industry and building a technology company around media is something he's proud of, with good reason. The family business produces news across publications, lead generation, research and data products, digital platforms, custom publishing, and events, reaching 78 million readers globally; the company's portfolio consists of 24 brands.  Crain sites two tough situations he's faced that have helped him to grow. The first was an absolute failure to launch a new business. The second was starting over. He's learned the art of communication, in an environment that provides opportunities to hone his skills, exercising the courage to be honest.  “Confidence,” he says, “is learned.” Crain has a passion for learning, investing his time and effort into diving deeply into his subject matter. It makes sense. With increasing knowledge and expertise comes increasing confidence.  His advice to those who are thinking of joining a family business is as wise and humorous as it gets, “Go work somewhere else for a while.” He credits his ability to follow in his father and grandfather's footsteps to understanding that no one person has all the answers. You can learn from anyone on the team, older or younger, at any time. Be open-minded and open to change.  As a husband and father of five children, he's taken his mom's words to heart—I don't care what happens with the family company, I care what happens at Thanksgiving.  Like many Detroiters, Crain has fond memories of the city's sports wins, and the energy its teams bring to the city. But having been in Detroit for over 50 years, Crain has enjoyed seeing the Riverfront and Central Business District come to life.  Denise enthusiastically agrees with her guest, “I think we've got one of THE most generous cities in America.”  ***  KC Crain is President and CEO for Crain Communications, Inc. His previous roles include COO, EVP and Director of Corporate Operations, VP and Group Publisher. He started as a reporter for Automotive News. Crain is board chair for the Detroit Children's Fund and sits on the boards of the Young Presidents Organization, and the College for Creative Studies. He is dedicated to Detroit's economic development with investments and partnerships in real estate and restaurant ventures. Crain earned a BA in Communications from Denison University. He and his wife, Ashley, live in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, with their five children.  Denise Ilitch, an owner of Ilitch Family Companies and President of Ilitch Enterprises, has been a part of Detroit's business and philanthropic community for over 40 years.  As a mother, lawyer, entrepreneur, devoted community servant and tireless advocate for women and children, she learned early, from her father, that everyone is worthy of contributing to the world.  Her passion for affordable, accessible, quality education stems from her own experience as a first-generation student, earning a bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan, where she currently serves on the Board of Regents.  FOLLOW DENISE @thedeniseilitchshow  TO LEARN MORE about all our inspiring podcasts visit https://www.lifestough.com/.

In March 2022, HCMG announced hiring 13 new staff members, including 11 journalists who will focus their reporting on statewide topics, and local news and enterprise in the state capital area. They will publish that content online within the one-year-old CTInsider.com website and eight daily newspapers and community weekly publications. The New York State Department of Labor recently launched an Excluded Workers Program with the aim to bring financial relief to thousands of workers across the state who lost income during the pandemic and did not qualify for government-issued COVID-19 benefits. In an amazing effort, the NYDOL set up a new eligibility program in just 12 weeks and approved over $850 million in benefits for distribution in the first month. But new programs also mean new challenges, and the NYDOL needed to not just ensure that funds were being distributed, but that they were reaching the right people. How did they do it? With the help of Artificial Intelligence. By tapping technologies from Google Cloud and data science software Quantiphi, the NYDOL was able to launch a cloud-based user-friendly and streamlined application program that helped to ensure benefit integrity. That's what host James Hanson, Group Publisher for Federal and Technology Markets at GovExec will be digging into on this episode of AI: Gov Reimagined. James will be speaking with Denise Winkler, strategic business executive for Global Public Sector at Google Cloud and Taylor Cyr, managing director of Public Sector/Higher Education at Quantiphi. In this session, originally recorded on April 22, 2021, we asked Marina Glogovac, President & CEO of CanadaHelps, to share five good ideas for demystifying digital transformation. With a career spanning nearly three decades in technology and media (including working in the magazine industry during the shift to the internet), Marina knows the challenges that come from forced disruptions. She helps listeners understand what digital transformation actually means, and how to think about and approach this seemingly overwhelming task. Five Good Ideas Digital transformation is not about technology. You need the right technology, and integration is important. You need a clearly defined vision and to address four areas: Internal productivity, donor and customer process, culture and roles, and new service and revenue models. Change must be resourced. Go digital or go dark. A sense of urgency and ongoing commitment to digital transformation is critical for future survival and success. Resources: CanadaHelps’ Whitepapers on Digital Fundraising. As a teenager Marino Go set her sights on becoming the editor of Dolly magazine, a goal she achieved at the age of 23. Of course, achieving your ultimate goal so early in your career prompts the question, what’s next? Marina went on launch Australian Good Taste magazine for Woolworths before moving into the business strategy side of the media industry, with roles including CEO of Private Media, Publisher of Magazines at Fairfax, and Group Publisher at Pacific Publications. For the past decade Marina has focused her career at the board level, including five years under the spotlight as chairwoman of the NRL’s Wests Tigers. She is currently a non-executive director for Energy Australia, 7-Eleven, Pro-PAC, Autosports Group and the Walkley Foundation, as well as chair for Ovarian Cancer Australia and the Super Netball Commission. In 2016 Marina published her book Break Through: 20 Success Strategies for Female Leaders, and she is a role model and mentor to countless women in business and the media. Having looked up to Marina since those early Dolly days, in 2012 armed with a ‘I have nothing to lose, and everything to gain’ attitude, I contacted Marina and asked to meet her for coffee. That led to a work opportunity that helped form the early days of The PR Hub. I continue to be inspired by her career trajectory and her focus on supporting and empowering women. This week's podcast features a conversation with Tripp Babbitt and Bill Bellows, with an explanation of several new elements of the Deming Podcast. Beginning in May 2014, our podcasts have featured interviews with members of The Deming Institute community, including industry leaders, practitioners, educators, Deming family members, and others who share their stories of transformation and success through the innovative management and quality theories of Dr. W. In our October 2017 podcast, his first session with Tripp, Joshua Macht, Executive Vice President, Product Innovation, and Group Publisher of the Harvard Business Review (HBR) Group, shares his goal of how to recast management ideas to those new to management, with a focus on innovation, strategy, and core principles of leadership.    Long before he traveled to Gothenberg, Sweden in 2016 to attend an international healthcare conference, Josh was aware of Dr. Deming as an "old friend" of management, much the same as he assessed Peter Drucker.   Yet, upon witnessing Dr. Don Berwick conduct the classic "red bead experiment," he quickly joined the ranks of those deeply struck by the revelation that the performance of willing workers in any organization is largely governed by the system itself, far more than the performance of the workers taken separately.   So began his desire to review a series of videos and books about Dr. Deming, leading to his HBR article in 2016, a 6-page tribute to Dr. Deming, "The management thinker we should never have forgotten." In parallel, he also wrote about Dr. Deming in a 2016 article for the Boston Globe. Interview highlights include:  What's happening at the HBR – expansion, podcasts, innovation, new and expanded audience Thinking systemically Needs of young professionals New HBR product launched in India, ASCEND Lasting impressions of the red bead experiment, including whimsical measures of quality Now, more than ever, the need for a refresher on Dr. Deming Layoffs and the erosion of trust How good people fall prey to a bad system Dr. Deming's world of human nature Efforts that obliterate trust Barriers to success How workers treat each other in ways that are counter-productive Taylorism vs. Deming management HBR and the Watertown (Massachusetts) Arsenal, an early site of Taylorism Organizational undercurrents of “Us” vs “Them” Passion for innovation and a role as a digital renegade The need to be useful and feel valued The joy of learning

In this episode, Marcello Sukhdeo takes a look at John Chen’s recent announcement that we may see a BlackBerry tablet in the near future. Also, he shares his review of the Samsung Gear S3 Frontier and wraps up with a new tech show that is coming this November. Show Notes: BlackBerry tablet If you haven’t heard by now, BlackBerry is about to bring us another tablet. In the words of John Chen, CEO of BlackBerry, "One of our partners is very excited to build a tablet based on Android. I'm interested to do that because I'm going to get royalties for every tablet they ship.” So, this is another effort by BlackBerry to get back into the tablet market. The PlayBook was released in April 2011 and is the only tablet built by BlackBerry. When it first came out it had that premium feel to it and carried a hefty price. It was considered a good, mini tablet that was supposed to work well with BlackBerry phones. But it didn’t, in a push to get the tablet out early, BlackBerry shipped it without a calendar app, an email app and the BlackBerry Bridge. These were glaring omissions especially for a company that was once so popular for its email client on its smartphones. Even though these updates were made later, the damage was already done. In total, some 2.5 million units were sold with most of it at very large discount. Can a BlackBerry Android tablet make a dent in the tablet market today? Given the extra layer of security that they’ve added to their Android based smartphones, this could be a big selling point for them. But in the end, it will come down to the design and price. Learn more: http://itincanadaonline.ca/index.php/mobility/2095-are-we-going-to-see-another-blackberry-tablet-soon My take on the Samsung Gear S3 The S3 is the latest version of smartwatch from Samsung. Editor-in-Chief Austin Walker is still on vacation, but Senior Reporter Patrick Klepek is holding down the fort with Managing Editor Danielle Riendeau and Group Publisher Joel Fowler. (Group Publisher means he helps manage the site and deal with boring stuff like money.) Besides discussing Horizon: Zero Dawn, we celebrate Joel finally beating Dark Souls 3, and dip into The Question Bucket. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Financially Empowering Women

In today’s show we discuss two very disparate topics; Women’s empowerment as consumers, and What are ETFs? Women’s Empowerment as consumers:  Money is one of the major sources of power. Understanding, controlling, managing, spending and earning money provides status, power, freedom and control of everyone and everything that money can buy.  As women, holding these abilities over money tips the scales and balances power, which is why I think the idea of financially empowering women is so very important. This is why we produce this podcast and offer seminars - to inspire women to become empowered and that is why we support organizations (from the local chapters of NOW to various other groups) that support women.  One such group is The Women’s Choice Award, which is dedicated to empowering women by supporting women’s decisions as consumers.  The Women’s Choice Award for Financial Advisors was created by WomenCertified®, Inc in partnership with WIFE.org (Women’s Institute for Financial Education).  Today we speak to the founder of the Women’s Choice Award and the CEO of WomenCertified®, Delia Passi, who is the leading female consumer advocate in the nation. What are ETF’s:  An ETF or Exchange-traded funds is an investment company which usually invests with the objective to achieve similar returns as a particular asset class or market index.  ETFs have grown in popularity over the past decade because of their flexibility to trade like a stock and provide instant diversification in the form of an index fund.  In this answer to a mailbag question, we discuss the advantages of an ETF over individual stocks, mutual funds and index funds but we also talk about the need to understand what you invest in.  You don’t need to know about the plethora of investments that are out there, but you do need to know about the things that you own and if you decide to invest in ETF, make sure to do your research. About Delia Passi Women Certified®, a marketing and research firm and home to the Women’s Choice Awards is led by Delia Passi, the nation’s leading expert on marketing to women and consultant to numerous Fortune 500 companies. Delia is the leading speaker on the women’s market and a lifelong leader and advocate for the female consumer.  Prior to founding WomenCertified, Delia was the Group Publisher of Working Woman and Working Mother Magazines.  Passi is also the author of Winning the Toughest Customer: The Essential Guide to Selling to Women (Kaplan, 2006)
