New Time! Join Jesus Unmasked on FB live Wednesdays at 11 am CT/ 9 am PT! Start your morning with Jesus and friends! "Whoever eats of this bread will live forever, and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh." More Bread of Life this week, but also more opportunities for exclusive interpretations of scripture that don't affirm life for all. The words of Jesus have been interpreted in ways that make it seem like the fates of our souls depend on a theological test. "Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to me." This scripture has been interpreted in ways that can leave us feeling empty, malnourished, and hungry for something better. What if the Bread of Life isn't about exclusive beliefs, but something else altogether? What if it is about seeing that there is a way to be human that doesn't exclude anyone? When Jesus calls us to believe in him, he is asking us to believe in the way of generosity and abundance. That's why it is particularly egregious to use these passages in a stingy manner that demands conformity on threat of hell for nonbelievers. As Adam, Lindsey, and friends discuss in this episode, there is no hell except what we put ourselves and each other through by believing that God's love has limits and then trying to impose those limits. Jesus is calling us into the fullness of life by recognizing that God's love is for everyone. When Jesus calls himself the bread that came down from heaven, he references the manna in the wilderness. He reminds the people how they came to know that God loves them, through liberating them and providing for their needs. He explains, "The way you experience the fullness of life is by remembering the love of God that provided for your material needs and understanding that that love is for everyone. I am the Bread of Life for the whole world. Anyone whom you may have considered excluded from God's love -- the poor, the sick, the marginalized, the demon-possessed, the tax collectors, everyone... God's love is all-inclusive. And that means you are to live as if all people are your brothers and sisters, because they are." Jesus says the bread he gives for the life of the world is his flesh. That means God cares about flesh, and that means we are to care for each other not just as if our souls, but also as if our bodies and minds and all our human needs matter, because the do. Jesus gives his flesh unto death to show us that God's love extends even to those executed in God's name, and its from our forgiving victims that we recognize and are set free from cycles of violence in which we have been caught up. But Jesus's flesh does more than die -- it embraces, breaks bread, washes feet, and is physically present with the most vulnerable. Feasting on the Bread of Life is about living in the kind of love that feeds and heals and befriends all. Adam, Lindsey, and friends know that we are called to feast on the bread of life together, so join us every Wednesday at our new time, 11 am CT, 9 am PT for Jesus Unmasked on the Raven Foundation Facebook page. Jesus Unmasked is also available whenever you are wherever you listen to your podcasts.
Many of us have a story behind doing what we do. You may have been raised by parents living paycheck to paycheck, spurring you to chase financial freedom and create a better life. Or maybe you labored tirelessly at work to get a promotion or raise, simply to be passed up for someone else. For Adam Gilbert, founder of MyBodyTutor, his “why” is his father.Adam looked up to his father all his life but saw the pain and distress he was going through when he had a heart attack, a triple bypass surgery, and was later diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. This forged a path for Adam that materialized in the health and fitness space. Adam knew that he never wanted to be “too tired” to play with his kids, spend time with his family, or pursue a passion. As Adam has grown his business over the past decade and a half, he's come away with many lessons that ring true for not only fitness enthusiasts but business owners as well. We talk through the five rules that Adam has put together for anyone to become healthy, wealthy, and mentally sound. While this is a mindset episode, you'll be surprised with how many of these rules crossover almost perfectly into real estate investing. In This Episode We Cover:When to quit your full-time job and pursue your passionsChoosing daily consistent action over large infrequent actionsWhy health is the ultimate productivity tool Setting up “planned indulgences” and being strict, yet fair with yourselfChoosing consistency over intensity and opting for small changes over timeDoing what scares you until it doesn'tAccountability through partners, coaches, and friendsAnd So Much More!Links from the ShowBiggerPockets ForumsBiggerPockets CalculatorsBiggerPockets Youtube ChannelBiggerPockets BookstoreGoBundanceOpenDoor CapitalBrandon and David's BooksAdam from My Body TutorBiggerPockets Podcast 425: Focusing On Your $10,000/Hour Tasks (And How to Outsource the Rest!) with Benjamin HardyMybodytutor.com Special Deal for ListenersClick here to check the full show notes: https://www.biggerpockets.com/show491See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Centers of Reconciliation In Bruce Milne's book, he argues that the church is meant to be a center of reconciliation. This idea of a reconciliation center is predicated upon the vast division in society, division which is normally comprised of the four major categories of class, age, race, and gender. According to Milne, a center of reconciliation is a place which seeks reconcile the divides found in those four categories (Milne 14). In other words, a center of reconciliation is meant to either mend, bridge, or even transcend these categories of division and/or distinction, to borrow the verbs used by Milne. Where then are these centers located? What is the most appropriate place to see this reconciliation take place? The answer varies from person to person. Generally speaking, these centers are understood to be (or at least meant to be) the societal structures of nations, states, and cities. And the engine for the reconciliation of class, age, race and gender is legislation. While this is a popular opinion and legislation may indeed have some validity in contributing to fair and just societies, this is not the answer for true reconciliation. It is also not the answer Milne gives. Instead, Milne suggests that the most appropriate place to see this reconciliation take place is not in legislation, but in the church. Yet, his reason is not due to a moral argument that the church is the arbiter of truth, or that a theocratic society is the most preferred variety for considering the legislative process of reconciliation. Instead, his reason is due to the fact that the church is described as nothing short of a new humanity. That is an argument of transcendence, which is quite appropriate for transcending divides. A reasonable follow up question to ask of Milne's argument is, what does it mean that the church is a new humanity? The apostle Paul describes this to the Corinthians: “All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation, that is in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation” (2 Cor. 5.18-19). And this whole discussion from Paul is predicated on the previous verse, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold the new has come” (2 Cor. 5.17). Based on the testimony of scripture, the church is the heartbeat and center of reconciliation. It is to the bride of Christ that God has gifted and entrusted the ministry of reconciliation, and this means that anything short of the ministerial context of the church is short of the full realization of reconciliation. This is a profound answer offered by Milne, especially as issues of class, age, race and gender are primary issues that legislation and political science seeks to solve. It could well be argued that the church is overstepping her bounds when she seeks to enter into the realm of state by assuming that she hold the key to solving these issues. But according to the apostle Paul, the whole idea of reconciliation is a heart issue, one which requires a new humanity altogether. And if the stakes of reconciliation are high enough to require a new heart, no one would argue that such a problem could be fixed by legislation. New hearts do not come into being by legislation, new hearts come into being in a new humanity. With that grand thesis in mind, here are some personal considerations of my efforts towards reconciliation in my own ministry context. It is important to stress here that I don't think contextualization is something the church must take ownership of. This requires some clarification. God dictates by His providence who lives when and where, and as such no church should feel burdened by their lack of diversity, or boastful of their exceeding diversity. For example, demographics of class, age, race and gender are not the same in all areas. Some places have more black people than white people, some places are overwhelmingly higher income, and some places are predominately retirement age. It is an artificial construct to insist that the church is only reconciliatory to the degree that they are equally represented along these lines in every church. This is simply not possible and even if it is pursued, it is mathematically impossible to have equal representation in every category. If this is true, what is the right way for the church (and my church) to be a center of reconciliation? The answer is the stress the incongruity of partiality with the gospel of reconciliation. Partiality can be taught in a church context that is widely diverse, or widely favoring a particular demographic. But either way, partiality rightly understood puts God's people in a position to either receive people of dividing categories into the flock with welcome arms, or to take that understanding into the workplace and public square so as to speak life into those realms which are hopefully outside the bounds of reconciliation without the work of God's people set apart to that work. Further, reconciliation is found in the heart of those who understand that all humanity is equally condemned in sin and equally in need of reconciliation, found only in the gospel of Jesus Christ. As Adam and Eve sinned in the garden, they represented the entire human race, without partiality to class, age, race or gender. All mankind fell in the sin of Adam and all mankind was in need of a new humanity. As Cain killed his brother Abel and taunted God “Am I my brother's keeper?” (Gen. 4.9), he expressed that all mankind without partiality is in a state of division towards one another as offspring of Adam and Eve. But the good news of a new humanity means that we move from a place of animosity towards God and one another to a place of reconciliation with God and one another. This is the good news according to Paul, “the message of reconciliation” (2 Cor. 5.19).
Although Sam had done nothing wrong, he lost his job on the assembly line. Carelessness in another division led to problems in cars they built. After several crashes made the news, leery customers stopped buying their brand. The company had to downsize, leaving Sam out of work. He’s collateral damage, and it isn’t fair. It never is. History’s first collateral damage occurred immediately after the first sin. Adam and Eve were ashamed of their nakedness, so God graciously clothed them with “garments of skin” (v. 21). It’s painful to imagine, but one or more animals that had always felt safe with God were now slaughtered and skinned. There was more to come. God told Israel, “Every day you are to provide a year-old lamb without defect for a burnt offering to the Lord; morning by morning you shall provide it” (Ezekiel 46:13). Every. Single. Day. How many thousands of animals have been sacrificed because of human sin? Their death was necessary to cover our sin until Jesus, the Lamb of God, came to remove it (John 1:29). Call this “collateral repair.” As Adam’s sin kills us, so the Last Adam’s [Christ’s] obedience restores all who believe in Him (Romans 5:17–19). Collateral repair isn’t fair—it cost Jesus’ life—but it’s free. Reach out to Jesus in belief and receive the salvation He offers, and His righteous life will count for you.

Today on The Hardcore Humanism Podcast, we are talking with Adam Weiner – vocalist, musician and songwriter for the band Low Cut Connie. During quarantine, Adam and Low Cut Connie have been live streaming a show called Tough Cookies, a combination of a talk show, concert series and support group for people during the pandemic. And the show has been so successful and had so many great performances that they are putting out an album of the cover songs they performed during the broadcast called Tough Cookies: The Best of the Quarantine Broadcasts. The album will arrive May 19th, and is available to preorder digitally and on CD and vinyl. One of the reasons that Low Cut Connie’s music so compelling is that Weiner will often write songs about or from the perspective of people who have been marginalized or “forgotten” in our society. Weiner points out in our discussion that much of our society seems to glorify celebrity, wealth or mainstream social status at the expense of people who do not fit into one of those exalted categories. And this process emerges at a very young age, where it feels as though the world is made up of “cool” kids and not so cool kids. The cool kids get rewarded with popularity and having the attention and admiration of other kids and maybe even teachers and parents. They get the benefit of the doubt if they do something wrong. And there’s a sense, either implicitly or even explicitly that we should all try to be one of the cool kids, or at least participate in the admiration. One of the key goals humanistic psychotherapy is to provide people who may feel marginalized with the unconditional positive regard that they need in order to push back against those societal pressures. And by pushing back, people can often come to understand who they really are and what they want to do in their life. One of the biggest barriers that we face is trying to be authentic in the face of so many pressures to be otherwise. And what Adam talks about was how he recognized that he didn’t want to conform and be cool in that sense of the word. And when choosing his friends, he gravitated towards people who were more on the fringes. As Adam got older, he was able to dig deeper into the ways that he felt uncool and marginalized. He not only expressed this in his art and performances, but he also found a community of likeminded people who similarly rejected conventional notions of cool in favor of more individuality and authenticity. And Adam’s lesson is crucial for anyone who has felt marginalized, stigmatized or "uncool."*****Newsletter: https://lp.constantcontactpages.com/su/GBmf0iU/HardcoreHumanismSignUpInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/hardcorehumanism/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/HardcoreHumanism/Twitter: https://twitter.com/hardcorhumanismLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/hardcore-humanism

This podcast is an interview with Adam and Tony, two young men who share the story of recovery from a potentially deadly disorder. The occasion was Adam's two-year milestone beginning with his entering residential treatment in Thailand. We learned about the conversation with Adam and Tony that:In early sobriety, we ourselves don't notice that we are changing for the better, but the people close to us do. It takes consistent, sober and good behaviour to have people begin to trust us again. It's not unusual for active addicts to create and sustain unjustified resentments, because unrecovered addicts are extremely self-centred and tend to blame others for their woes.Holding oneself accountable and making amends are among the greatest challenges that recovering addicts and alcoholics encounter on their journey. As Adam says: "It's big boy time. Time to grow up".Conversely, the burden is greatly eased when "We live one day at a time." Being fully present in the Now has been taught by gurus for centuries as the essence of the spiritual life, the reason we meditate to begin with.

As Adam and Eve begin to fill the earth, they start to see the effects of their sin. Some of their kids love God and some hate Him. Some walk with God and some don't listen to Him. Within one generation it becomes clear that there will be those who follow God and those who do not. Eventually, all who love God from every tribe, tongue and nation will be gathered into one new family

There were days when he really enjoyed seeing how animated she could be as she multitasked. She did it all: worked on washing dishes, tending to the stove for making both her breakfast and her lunch, wiping things down, and even making a fresh pot of coffee. She would even be able to talk to Adam as she did all these things. Adam was one of the premier basketball players on the Strickfield High School team. Adam had always been about sports from his days in Strickfield Junior High all the way to now. He even had scouts come and see him, some offering him full rides through colleges and universities. However, he would have to keep his grades up and be able to graduate. Mathematics was never his strongest subject, which was why he needed a tutor. Around football season, Adam saw a flyer on the school bulletin board that Jarren Hatley had put up about tutoring. He texted her number, got a response, and she had been tutoring him in math since their first session. Adam hadn’t planned on taking a real liking to this geek, but his overall grades were greatly improving because of her – not just math. He was so grateful to her one day that he kissed her, just intending for it to be a peck on the lips. But it ended up becoming much more. Now Adam and Jarren were an item, the talk of Strickfield High. The one thing that Adam couldn’t believe about Jarren was how much caffeine she drank. Now, she was pouring her freshly made coffee into a thermal cup to drink at school. She had just finished everything when she smiled at Adam. “Okay, done!” Adam accepted the breakfast sandwich from her, along with a kiss. The two of them were about to leave when they heard a strange noise. They both looked to see the coffeemaker making louder noises. Then it gave off a sudden surge; they saw a brief, giant spark of electricity. Shortly after, the coffeemaker was smoking. “Shit . . .” Jarren muttered. “And I just bought it last week.” “Take it back,” Adam suggested. “You still have the receipt?” Jarren gave him a look of finality before shaking her head. “Best Buy’s going to think I abused it.” She sighed. “I’ll just have to buy another one, but I’m not going to have time today.” “That’s right, you’ve got those meetings tonight,” Adam recalled. Jarren sighed. “Student council after school. Key Club right after. Followed by your football banquet.” Adam smiled and eased Jarren into his arms to give her a gentle hug. “Don’t worry, I’ll find you a new coffee pot.” Jarren looked into his eyes. “You’re not going to have time. We could make it out to Strickfield Towne Center Mall before they close at nine, but Best Buy closes at eight.” Adam caressed the side of her face. “I’ll get you your coffee pot tonight. That’s a promise.” They kissed one more time before they left her house and went to school. * * * After the football banquet, Adam and Jarren couldn’t get out of Strickfield High fast enough. Adam drove them out to Strickfield Towne Centre Mall. By the time they had pulled in and parked, Adam saw that Jarren was sound asleep. “Probably hit the wall,” he mumbled to himself. He wanted to wake her up, but she looked so peaceful that he just let her sleep. He got out and went into the mall. As Jarren had said, Best Buy had closed at eight. There were only a select few other stores open. Adam shook his head to himself. He couldn’t believe this mall was still open. There were so many vacancies, especially after the holidays were over. He kept expecting to come to the mall and see it finally closed for good. Still, it continued to stay open. Adam moved past the food court, which only had a Subway and a mom-and-pop pizza place. Just thinking about food made him think about Denoyer’s Grill. He checked out the rest of the mall, but he wasn’t having any real luck. There was one last store down where Radio Shack used to be. “Tinker’s,” he muttered. “What have I got to lose?” He walked to the store and went in. He couldn’t believe all the odds and ends that were there. Just then, a man in his late forties approached him. “Can I help you, young man?” Adam shrugged. “I hope. My girlfriend’s coffeemaker crapped out on her this morning, and I promised her I’d get her another one – tonight.” The man smiled. “Well, my good man, you’re in luck. I just happen to have one right over here.” The man took him to what appeared to be a percolator. Adam gave the man a look of uncertainty. “She’s more of a Mr. Coffee type person. She wants her coffee as soon as she gets out of bed. I mean, she lives on coffee – and energy drinks.” “I do have energy drinks in the cooler by the cash register, but I’m afraid I can’t help you in terms of an automatic drip coffee maker.” The man raised his finger. “However, your girlfriend will never have to worry about electricity with this percolator.” He lowered his finger. “Unless she’s using electric . . . ?” “No, her dad made it so her house either runs on natural gas or burning wood.” He took a deep breath. “How much?” “Hey, no pressure, son.” “I know, but I want Jarren to be happy and have her coffee in the morning. Maybe she can learn to appreciate this. If not, I’ll get her what she wants tomorrow after basketball practice.” The man took the percolator, and they went to the cash register. A few moments later, he quoted Adam the price. “Twenty dollars.” “Twenty dollars?! For this thing?” Adam raised his hands in front of him. “I mean, this thing’s gotta be an antique.” “And you are right. However, you look like your heart’s in the right place with wanting to get this for your girlfriend. So for you . . . twenty dollars.” Adam dug out his wallet. Adam knew that Jarren’s dad would be uneasy if he brought her home as crashed as she was. Adam carried her from his car and into his house, after he unlocked the back door. He carried her up to his room and laid her down in his bed. After covering her up, he went back downstairs to close and lock everything back up. As he was about to lock up his car, he saw the percolator he’d just bought from Tinker’s and picked it up. Adam went back inside. After locking the door, he decided to see how the percolator worked. He found a quick video on YouTube and knew he could easily make morning coffee for Jarren. The next morning, Friday, Jarren yawned and woke up. She saw she was in Adam’s room and turned to see Adam sleeping in the recliner next to the bed. She yawned again and moved to wake him up. Adam opened his eyes, and she kissed him. “Good morning.” “Hey,” he whispered. “You all right?” She nodded. “I could really use some coffee, though.” Adam raised his finger. “Say no more. I bought a percolator for you last night. We can try it out before we leave for school. Why don’t you go take a shower? I’ll head downstairs and make your coffee.” They kissed again. Then Adam watched as Jarren got some fresh clothes out of the two dresser drawers that he let her use for when she’d stay the night. Adam yawned, staggered out of his room, and walked downstairs. Jarren came down freshly dressed and accepted the mug of hot coffee from Adam. “I never made coffee before, baby, so I hope you like it.” Jarren didn’t hesitate and took a drink. Then she looked at Adam. “This is really good.” Adam gave her a weird look. “Really?” “I’m serious. This is delicious.” She took another drink. “Very strong – just the way I love it!” Adam wasn’t the cook that Jarren was. All he had to offer her was prepackaged food from the cupboard. She accepted a pack of Pop Tarts and opened them to enjoy with her coffee. Adam poured her some more and topped off her thermal cup that he had washed before going to sleep. Adam and Jarren had a little time before class, so they sat in the cafeteria and talked about whatever. It wasn’t long before Adam’s fellow jocks approached him. The truth was that Adam never really cared for any of them, especially when they showed their obvious contempt for Jarren. “Can it wait until class?” Adam demanded, without so much as looking at them. Brent Haskel snickered. “I don’t know why you put that ho before your bros, man.” Then he looked at Jarren. “Get the fuck outta here!” Adam was ready to get up and stand up for Jarren. Much to his surprise, Jarren immediately stood up. She looked at Brent with such a sharp glare; Adam had never seen this look from her before. “Why don’t you make me, asshole?” The other jocks laughed. Then Brent leaned in. “I’m sorry, I don’t think I heard you, geek.” Jarren didn’t back down. “Yes, you did. You know, this school must be pretty desperate for a basketball team if they’re letting just any dumbasses play for them. Correct me if I’m wrong, but you haven’t even won one single basketball game!” Apparently, Jarren’s stating of the obvious was too much for Brent’s ego, because he grabbed Jarren and raised his fist to hit her. As Adam was about to fight him, Jarren struck first. Still glaring at him, she raised her right hand – with lightning speed – and dug her long fingernails into the side of Brent’s face. She seemed to take great pride in dragging her nails down his flesh, making him scream and bleed fast. The other jocks were about to attack Jarren, but several teachers were quick on the scene. Brent Haskel kept crying out as he continued to bleed from his face, blood dripping on the floor. When Jarren opened the back door of her house and walked in, she saw her father waiting for her. “You wanna tell me why the fuck Principal Van Diest just called me to tell me that you’re SUSPENDED?!” Jarren took a drink of coffee from her thermal mug, finishing it. She didn’t even seem to care that her father had just yelled at her, as he had done so many times before during her life. “Yeah? And . . . ? Sure, it’s quite all right for a guy to try and beat me up, right? But when I strike back, oh fuck no! Nooooooooooo! That’s never fucking okay! You’re just supposed to be quiet and –” Her father lashed out and slapped her so hard that she fell onto the kitchen floor. Then he pointed down at her. “Don’t you ever talk to me like that in my house!” Jarren glared at him and slowly stood up. She put her hand on the side of her face and felt the heat her father had just inflicted on her and knew her face was red. Lowering her hand, she said to her father in a deadly whisper, “This is the last time you ever put your hands on me, you son of a bitch!” Without warning, she grabbed a knife out of a nearby cutting block and went at her father. He screamed as she stabbed him, making him bleed fast. Then she stabbed him a second time! A third! A fourth! Again . . . and again! When her father was lying dead in a pool of his own blood, Jarren laughed maniacally before she licked the blood off the knife. After she growled in satisfaction, she decided that she wanted some more coffee. Since the coffeemaker was still wrecked, she remembered the percolator at Adam’s house. Adam had been depressed after watching Principal Van Diest yell at Jarren. When she stood up and turned his desk over, he pointed to his door and yelled that she was suspended and for her to, “Get the hell out! Now!” What had happened to Jarren? She was always such a sweet girl. He knew that she had it rough growing up, being raised by an abusive father. Still, she had always kept her head high. She was the best thing that had ever happened to him. It wasn’t until the day’s events had unfolded that Adam realized that he truly loved her with all of his heart. He wanted to call her, but Jarren didn’t own a cell phone. Her dad wouldn’t let her have one. He decided that he had had enough of seeing Jarren suffer. He was going to go and get her and bring her to live with him. He would protect her from her father if push came to shove. He decided to stop at home first. He noticed the snow was starting to come down and remembered the blizzard that was forecasted for the weekend. When he walked into his house, the strong smell of coffee filled the kitchen. Jarren was sitting at the table, wearing one of Adam’s football jerseys, and drinking her coffee. “Hi, honey.” Adam quickly sat across from her. “Jarren, are you okay?” Then he saw the red mark on the side of her face. “Oh, my god . . .” Jarren took his hand and another drink of coffee. “I’m fine, babe. Just fine now.” Her face appeared more sinister. “Daddy’s not a problem anymore.” Then she looked to the percolator. “Have some coffee. Just made it fresh. It’s really cold outside, especially with the blizzard here now.” When Adam declined, Jarren shrugged. “More for me.” Adam took her hand. “Listen, you don’t have to worry about your dad. You can stay here with me – as long as you want.” She squeezed his hand. “I told you . . . he’s not a problem anymore.” She nodded to the window. “You sure you want to be cooped up with me during the blizzard this weekend?” “I don’t want you to go,” Adam replied. Jarren finished her cup and put it down. Then she stood up, came over to Adam, and sat on his lap. She gazed into his eyes. “I want you.” They kissed passionately. After a while, Jarren got off Adam’s lap. She took his hand and waited for him to stand up. Then she led him upstairs to his bedroom. It was Wednesday morning before Strickfield High School could reopen. Adam and Jarren walked in holding hands. Many eyes turned to Jarren. She no longer wore the clothes people were accustomed to seeing her wear. Her hair was dyed red and was frizzy and wild. Her clothes now showed off her tapered legs and skinny figure. Adam didn’t know what to make of Jarren’s new attitude – or her makeover. She seemed like her old self when they were together all throughout the blizzard. Jarren stopped just in front of the principal’s office. “Here, hold my coffee.” She handed Adam the thermal mug and marched right into the office. Principal Van Diest hadn’t expected Jarren to burst in . . . literally burst through his door. The principal pointed to her. “You aren’t supposed to be here! I suspended you for two weeks!” Jarren stood in front of his desk, raised her arms, and slammed her fists down. Principal Van Diest couldn’t believe that skinny Jarren Hatley had just destroyed his desk. She glared at him now. “Let me make this clear to you, asshole. I come and go when and where I please. You want to keep pissing me off, I’ll be glad to put you through another desk. Seriously, I am so sick of your fucking shit! How many times have you let bullies run rampant here, while you punish people like me?” She pointed at him. “That changes today! You hear me?!” Principal Van Diest raised his arms in front of him as Jarren grabbed him and lifted him right off his feet. She glared into his eyes. “Don’t fuck with me!” Then she dropped him back into his chair, turned around, and walked out. Jarren smiled with glee as she took her coffee back from Adam. “All settled . . .” The two of them hadn’t walked ten feet from the office door when it slammed open. The principal burst out and pointed right at Jarren. “You are expelled from Strickfield High School! Leave here now, or I’ll call the police!” Jarren stopped. She chugged the rest of her coffee before she handed the mug back to Adam. She turned around and flexed herself, causing loud cracks to come from her neck and back. Then she gave Principal Van Diest her evil glare again. “You just don’t listen to reason, do you?” Before Principal Van Diest could yell another word, Jarren grabbed him. Easily lifting him up and over her head, she threw him several feet down the hallway. He might have crashed right through the windows of the cafeteria had he not been caught by someone else. When he felt himself being put back down, he turned to see the blonde girl who had caught him. Next to her was Eileen Donnerly, whom most everybody knew as Einstein. He knew Eileen, but he had never seen the blonde girl who now looked even meaner and angrier than Jarren Hatley. “Principal Van Diest, what is going on?” Eileen asked with surprise, in her mousy voice. Suddenly, Jarren was right there. She grabbed Principal Van Diest with one hand and shoved the blonde girl so hard that she flew back and through the gymnasium doors. Then she shoved Eileen so that she fell hard onto her rear. “Now . . . Matthew, where were we?” Jarren sneered. “Jarren, stop!” she heard Adam calling out. She didn’t seem to hear him. “I’m going to put you right through these fucking cafeteria doors. Then I’m going to put you through every goddamn table.” Suddenly, Jarren felt Principal Van Diest being snatched away from her. The blonde was back. She put the principal back down and snapped at him, “Get the fuck out of here!” When Principal Van Diest moved away, the blonde turned to Jarren. “You just made a huge mistake, you fucking skank. Nobody puts their fucking hands on me like that. You want to fight?! Let’s fight!” “Bells!” Eileen called out to her. Bella Taibon quickly turned to Eileen, yanked her up, and pushed her next to Principal Van Diest. “Get him the fuck away from here, Einny.” Jarren grabbed Bella and attempted to throw her, but Bella was ready for her. Much to Jarren’s surprise, Bella was quite strong herself. Jarren found herself being thrown into the gym now. She landed on the floor and slid to the halfway point of the basketball court. Bella marched right in shortly after. “I seriously do not need this fucking shit, this morning!” Bella snapped. “First, I had to spend the last several days in this motherfucking village during that blizzard! Then I have to wear these fucking clothes just to be able to come to school!” She yelled over her shoulder. “A fucking schoolgirl outfit?! Really, Einny?” She glared at Jarren. “Now I’m in a fucking school. And I have to deal with you first thing this morning? What, did you put your fucking tampon on wrong or something?” Jarren screamed like a banshee and ran at Bella. The two girls met and started trading punches. Bella could easily have avoided Jarren’s fists, but she wanted to know what sort of a supernatural being she was dealing with. When Bella determined that Jarren was just a human, she started taking more of the offensive. Bella lifted Jarren off her feet and threw her into the bleachers. She crashed through them and groaned. Jarren was quickly back on her feet, both bleeding and bruised now. She screamed at Bella again as she came out from inside the bleachers. Then she ran at Bella again. Bella knew that she couldn’t unload anymore on this girl, as much as she wanted to. Despite having the strength and powers of a thousands-of-years-old Master Vampire, she would have to subdue her without killing her. Bella snatched Jarren and wrestled her to the floor. The two girls wrestled one another. Bella couldn’t believe that this human was so strong. Just by seeing the crazed look on Jarren’s face, she knew that Jarren was on something. She had seen many addicts in the past. While Jarren certainly wasn’t on drugs or alcohol, Bella knew there must have been some magic or potion that was making Jarren extraordinarily strong – and crazy. Bella was especially annoyed at the people who came into the gym just to snap pictures or take videos of the fight. No one would ever see it, thanks to Bella’s inability to be photographed. But in the hallways, students would call it the geek girl vs. the bad schoolgirl. Bella focused and took the defensive as Jarren threw fist after fist at her. She hoped that Jarren would tire and become easier to subdue. When she saw that this wouldn’t happen, Bella snatched Jarren and took her down to the floor. She wrapped her legs around Jarren’s midsection from behind and locked Jarren’s upper body in a full nelson type move. Jarren screamed and struggled to break free, but Bella was far too strong and could keep Jarren in her place. Bella held her incapacitated for several minutes. “Stop this!” Bella yelled. “Now!” “Never!!” Jarren screamed. Bella soon realized that Jarren’s strength would never diminish, but she had one more trick up her sleeve. She released Jarren and watched her get up. She came right at Bella, which was what Bella counted on. She snatched Jarren and held her so that she could lock eyes with her. Bella never really liked using her glam on people, but this was one time where it was warranted. Jarren felt herself under Bella’s spell and quickly became weaker because of it. Soon, she fell to the floor and went right to sleep. Eileen and Adam both came into the gym. “Bells, is everything okay?” Eileen asked. When Bella was sure that no one else could hear them, she answered, “I glammed her. I don’t know how long she’ll be out, but we need to lock her up somewhere where she can’t hurt anyone.” Adam knelt down next to Jarren. He took her hand and wondered what had happened to his beloved. In fact, that was what Bella wanted to know. She snatched up Adam and glared at him. “What’s she on? You better talk to me. I really don’t want to have to glam you.” Adam protested again and again that he really didn’t know. Bella believed him and put him down. She didn’t let him go, however. “Sorry, boy, but you leave me no choice.” Adam felt himself sink into Bella as she glammed him to her will. Being that she was a Master Vampire, she knew that she could go even further with her glam. She could actually peer deep into Adam’s mind and see everything that he had seen. She looked upon the last week. Then she came to the memory of him visiting Tinker’s at Strickfield Towne Center Mall. And then Bella understood. After removing the glam from Adam, the three of them waited as Jarren was strapped down tightly to a stretcher and taken away. Adam was ready to leave with the paramedics to be at Jarren’s side, but Bella stopped him. “Not so fast!” she snapped. “We’re going to your house first. I want to examine that percolator you bought for your girlfriend.” “But . . . !” Adam started to sputter. Then he sighed. “Okay . . .” Adam, Bella, and Eileen walked into Adam’s house through the back door. Bella immediately spotted the percolator and opened it. The remaining coffee inside was still hot and smelled strong. Bella uttered a brief incantation and discovered that this was no ordinary coffee pot when it gave off a feint red glow. Bella turned to Adam. “How much of this fucking shit did your honey drink?” Adam sighed in exhaustion. “I really don’t know . . . Jarren drinks so much caffeine.” Bella closed her eyes and stifled a groan. Then she opened them. “Okay, we’ll assume she drank quite a bit, based on what we’ve seen from her.” Then she poured the remaining coffee down the drain. “Is something wrong with that coffee pot, Bells?” Eileen asked. “Oh . . . nothing much,” Bella replied. “The metal body is made with traces of Olde Bloodstone – that’s Olde, with an e on the end. Not the kind of shit you want falling into the wrong hands.” “Isn’t that a birthstone?” Eileen asked. “Take the Olde away, and you’ve got the birthstone,” Bella replied. “Keep it in, and you’ve got some potentially dangerous magical properties that come from it.” Bella turned to Adam. “Your girlfriend’s coffee was tainted with it. There’s a fucking good reason why Olde Bloodstone goes great with a percolator. The tainted coffee brought out whatever pent-up emotions your girlfriend had. Now, it can be good or bad, depending on the person. Say you would have drank the tainted coffee, and you being hopeless romantic, it would have made you appreciate love that much more. You’d even be able to score most any girl you wanted. But in the case of your girlfriend . . . She must have had some really scary shit happen to her.” Adam explained about how Jarren had gone through many years of abuse at the hands of her father. Then he finished with, “She was always such a cheerful person whenever I saw her. When I finally met her dad, I knew right away something was off about him.” Bella looked a little sad now. “I’m really sorry, Adam. Your girlfriend drank all that tainted coffee. It brought out all the pent-up rage that had been building up inside her over the years. The more she drank, the more she percolated. Until she couldn’t take anymore and started lashing out. Like I said, Olde Bloodstone goes real fucking good with a percolator.” She got serious and looked him right in the face. “Now . . . let’s take a little trip to this mall of yours.” * * * Adam’s jaw dropped. “I’m telling you, Bella, it was right here. I’m not making this up! The store was right here – where the old Radio Shack used to be. Right here!” Bella looked at Adam. “I believe you. When I glammed you, I saw the store called Tinker’s. It made me think of a certain motherfucker named Eisley Tinker. See, he’s known and renowned in the supernatural world for fixing and rebuilding things . . . only he likes to add something . . . special to them to make supernatural shit happen. I ran into him some sixty years ago. Even now, Tinker’s still a slippery son of a bitch. He must have known people would be coming and . . . poof! No more fucking store! The problem is . . . we won’t know where Tinker will turn up next.” Just then, Adam received a call on his smartphone. It was from Strickfield General Hospital. The more Adam heard, the more his emotions lifted. “Yes, that’s great! Oh, thank you! Thank you so much!” When Adam hung up, he looked to Eileen and Bella. “Jarren’s going to be okay. She’s sleeping soundly. She’s going to be kept at Strickfield General until she’s gone through her caffeine withdrawals.” Then he groaned. “But how will Jarren ever be able to come back to school? I mean, a lot of people saw what she did. And then there’s Principal Van Diest . . .” Bella sighed. “Sorry, honey, but I can’t possibly glam that many people. I can glam Principal Van Diest so that Jarren isn’t suspended anymore, but the rest will be up to her.” “Thank you,” Adam said. Bella knew that Jarren Hatley would be okay, but what about the other lives that Eisley Tinker had claimed? Bella was even more upset now that she couldn’t leave Strickfield knowing that her old enemy had returned. Sooner or later, Tinker, you’re going to fuck up. And then . . . you’re fucking ass is MINE!! Olivia Luccardi (It Follows, Channel Zero) gave us a call to discuss her role in the post-apocalyptic thriller by Alex Knapp called Go/Don't Go. The film which is, admittedly, a slow burn features some great camera work for an indie film. Though more of a character study than an outright nail-biting thriller set in an unpopulated world, Go/Don't Go hits a bit differently than we were expecting. Ms. Luccardi spoke with us at length about the process of filming this feature and what it takes to be an actor in this current age. Check it out below. Go/Don't Go is currently available on streaming platforms and blu-ray / DVD. Synopsis: After an unknown cataclysm, Adam (Alex Knapp) is alone. The sole inhabitant of a vacant, unchanged world, or so he thinks. While attempting to stay grounded in the desolate landscape, visions come to him—the fateful night his best friend Kyle (Nore Davis) introduces him to the love of his life, K (Olivia Luccardi). As Adam’s mental state starts to unravel, he is plagued by lingering questions and uncertain realities about his world. His grip on what’s left starts to slip away—sending him spiraling towards a series of unforeseen consequences and unexpected truths. #interview #ItFollows #OliviaLuccardi

This week we're talking with our good friend Adam Crews of Tennessee about how he found success on a great public land buck during a late season "secondary rut" hunt in Kentucky. Adam breaks down his thought process going into this short 2 day out of state hunt, telling us what he was looking for & what sign he was keying in on that ultimately lead to him putting an arrow in a great buck. It's no secret that the month of November is a magical time for deer hunters in most of the country. It's the likely time of the year that most of us are putting in for vacation to have the best odds of killing a mature buck when he is most vulnerable. There's no doubt that it can be your best chance, however, December shouldn't be overlooked. There have been many studies about what is known as the secondary rut that would typically fall 28 days after the primary rut. These studies have narrowed down a lot of the rut action to one of two things: 1. Does that have not been bred yet, and 2. yearling/doe fawns that are coming into sexual maturity later in the season. As Adam experienced, this time of the year can be just as productive, and in some cases more productive than the primary rut. Adam shares with us the story of this specific hunt and how he used past experiences to put him in the right place to capitalize on a buck during this secondary rut. Known as the Cash Cab Guy... but let's peak behind the curtain... There is more to this story.Adam embraced what he already "had" and re-inventing himself from "live" to "online" quickly. Not withstanding, it was with a great learning experience. From mounting his phone sideways, to his family laughing through the vents. Are the "Gens" and "Millenials" laughing at us "older people"? (we agree they might be, but we are doing it! So keep laughing, we like to see you smile. )Adam shared with us his wonderful humility, as most Canadians do, but also a great outlook on seizing opportunity, how he did it, and sharing his humour from start to finish that is contageous. How did we find Adam? LaurieAnn watches The Cash Cab - and to be clear, LaurieAnn is Canadian, and Roy is American ( and yes, she is a fan... something that Adam has a word for... what may be fandom? Listen to find out), and sometimes LaurieAnn watches the recordings again to make sure she gets the answer right the second time. The attraction of the show? As Adam explains, it is meant for co-viewing. Although LaurieAnn lives alone and her dogs don't have the answer, she does contact Roy with the trivia question and see if he knows the answer (Kind of cheating because she knows the answer, but still fun). So in a sense, there is the after co-viewing experience as well.Beyond that, LaurieAnn "Fandom??" That's me, LaurieAnn. I am speaking for myself and not Roy. After inviting Adam on our Podcast, yes, being a Cash Cab Guy Fan, I did research and watched his comedy routine. I will speak to my experience of having seen a couple of television personalities who I really like, but their stand up comedy was not as appealing... Adam's is funny and impressive. I recommend you check it out!! Not just the Cash Cab Guy by any means. So much more behind the curtain. Our sincerest thanks to you, Adam, for your time. There is so much more in this interview than in this short overview. And more smiles. Enjoy the listen. You can find Adam Growe at www.adamgrowe.comHe is also very active on LinkedIn, Twitter and Instragram. As a closing. Pay attention. Adam does support causes. A chat with Chris, Shaun, and Adam from Overdrive Orchestra with fans Jason, Denise and Mike. We talk about the new Overdrive Orchestra album Electric Mind and get into a bit of the history of the band. Then we all dig into favorites. Favorite songs to play, favorite stages, and favorite albums. Along the way we explore musicians who inspired the band, prospects of new music, and what is the point of pineapple on pizza.Overdrive Orchestra and Electric MindOur chat took us all the way back to the formation of Overdrive Orchestra in Hartland, Michigan. Denise and Mike have been following the band since the earliest incarnations of Chris and Adam playing a Van Halen cover at a high school talent show. After a brief stint down in Nashville, Chris and Adam met up with fellow Hartland alumni Shaun, Cam, and JC (James Blevins) to round out what we now know as the Overdrive Orchestra. In February 2020, just before all hell broke loose, Overdrive Orchestra released Electric Mind. This is a must for anyone that digs emotive rock music with a progressive almost psychedelic lean. What is even better is that they released it on vinyl. The concept behind the album is the light, the spark, the energy within each of us. Overdrive Orchestra transform the inner fire of existence into a broadcast of electric rock music. It is a beautiful thing and this band has done a great job of capturing the fire within.A special song on the Electric Mind album by Overdrive Orchestra is called “Glass Kingdom”. A pulsating drum loop, accented with acoustic guitars and Chris’s soulful vocals is hauntingly beautiful. The main riff was developed by drummer Cameron Hill and the rest of the band fell in love with it. This riff spawns a moving composition that hints at loss and reflection. Each band member felt the drive to add their own texture and color which adds to the special vibe of the song. As Adam says about the main riff “It was a post and we were the vine crawling on it”.Favorite SongsMike was interested in what is the favorite song for each band member to play. Which could be their own or any other artist. Shaun mentioned that the vibe of a show can drive which one their songs feels favorite on a given night. However, in general Shaun is down with playing anything by All Them Witches. A super solid choice for those who dig a grungy stoner psychedelic tunes pulsing with bass. Chris seconds this as he was representing with an All Them Witches shirt. Sounds like we need to get All Them Witches on the show. For Adam the favorite song to play varies, but recently it has been “Release” off the Electric Mind album. This song features big burly foot stomping riffs and some tripped out harmonica (courtesy of Craig Griffith of the Verve Pipe). When journeying outside the Overdrive Orchestra catalog, Adam digs “No Quarter” by Zeppelin. Who can argue with that? Chris enjoys playing “Harvest”. Its moody syncopated intro builds into a torrent of fist pumping riffs.Favorite Albums and stagesJason piggybacked off favorites songs into favorite albums. Adam was quick to jump on 10000 Days by Tool and in particular the stellar bass playing of Justin Chancellor. Shaun digs Songs For The Deaf by Queens of the Stone Age. This album never disappoints. For Chris, the album that resonates with him is Houses of the Holy by Led Zeppelin. This timeless classic features perfect albums sides on A and B. Diehard fans Mike and Denise love the new Overdrive Orchestra album. We flipped this question back on Jason and he feels a great deal of nostalgia for Tommy by The Who as his dad played it quite a bit. That album when played with a candle burning will set you free.Favorite stages made it into the conversation and the clear winner was Founders in Grand Rapids. This is based on the fan and band interactions and sound quality. Honorable mention goes to the Blind Pig in Ann Arbor. This historic venue evidently was the loudest show by Overdrive Orchestra. As Shaun said louder is more better.Inspirational ArtistsAfter talking about favorites, we moved into inspirational musical artists which includes Dimebag Darrell, Josh Homme, Justin Chancellor, Frank Zappa, Jimmy Page, and Frank Ocean. A well rounded list that gives you a peek into the diverse spectrum of influences that guide Overdrive Orchestra.New Music and Naming of Overdrive OrchestraMike asked about a new album. The band has been using the quarantine period due to COVID to write new music, but want to wait to release until they can play live. This is the first time that all the band members have been working together on new tunes. The music on Electric Mind is actually a collection of music that is several years old. The new songs are more of a construction from the ground up with each member offering their unique inputs to the songs.Jason asked about the naming of the band. Chris relays that it started early on when the band was just a trio (prior to Shaun, Cam and JC joining). The concept behind the name is layered music like an orchestra, yet the hard rock vibe captured in the word overdrive. The actual first name kicked around was simply Overdrive with Orchestra being added to complete the concepts of the band. A bonus is you can abbreviate as O2, the fuel for our lives.Dig ItDig into all the stories, laughs, and the merit of pineapple on pizza in this episode of Fans With Bands with Overdrive Orchestra. Adam Jones was living in California and doing his dream work as an actor. He moved back to Pennsylvania to spend time with his aging grandmother and got active in creating and promoting events and festivals. During the 2016 election cycle, following a candidate event, he experienced a horrific and life-changing assault. As Adam shares his story, you’ll have no doubt that our justice system failed in a way that will leave your mouth hanging open in total astonishment and confusion. To say it was a turning point for him is an understatement. While he’s still on his own journey of recovery and living daily with the after-effects of a traumatic brain injury, Adam is not sitting around idly passing the time. He’s now on a mission to create an active, real-time safety net for the rest of us, which also creates an inalterable evidence trail should something happen that would require police intervention or end up in a courtroom someday. I won’t spoil the impact of hearing Adam’s story directly from him by sharing more details. Listen in and I guarantee you, you’ll be inspired to help him and his team bring Zeer to life! Adam’s Bio Adam David Jones was an actor from NY and California before a man brutally attacked him and tried to rape his friend. A year later, the perpetrator was acquitted by a jury though he was caught immediately covered in Adam's blood and with Adam’s money in his pocket. Adam chose a different career path after his coma. He has dedicated his life to preventing this from happening to someone else. To do so he started a technology company whose mission is to create a world where strangers no longer have to fear one another, and we are all free to be ourselves; a world where the truth is indisputable and powerful people are held to the same standards as the rest of us. His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord. Matthew 25:23. With unutterable love, Jesus welcomes His faithful ones to the joy of their Lord. The Saviour's joy is in seeing, in the kingdom of glory, the souls that have been saved by His agony and humiliation. And the redeemed will be sharers in His joy, as they behold, among the blessed, those who have been won to Christ through their prayers, their labors, and their loving sacrifice. As they gather about the great white throne, gladness unspeakable will fill their hearts, when they behold those whom they have won for Christ, and see that one has gained others, and these still others, all brought into the haven of rest, there to lay their crowns at Jesus' feet and praise Him through the endless cycles of eternity. As the ransomed ones are welcomed to the City of God, there rings out upon the air an exultant cry of adoration. The two Adams are about to meet. The Son of God is standing with outstretched arms to receive the father of our race—the being whom He created, who sinned against his Maker, and for whose sin the marks of the crucifixion are borne upon the Saviour's form. As Adam discerns the prints of the cruel nails, he does not fall upon the bosom of his Lord, but in humiliation casts himself at His feet, crying: "Worthy, worthy is the Lamb that was slain!" Tenderly the Saviour lifts him up and bids him look once more upon the Eden home from which he has so long been exiled. After his expulsion from Eden, Adam's life on earth was filled with sorrow. Every dying leaf, every victim of sacrifice, every blight upon the fair face of nature, every stain upon man's purity, was a fresh reminder of his sin.... With patient humility he bore, for nearly a thousand years, the penalty of transgression. Faithfully did he repent of his sin and trust in the merits of the promised Saviour, and he died in the hope of a resurrection. The Son of God redeemed man's failure and fall; and now, through the work of the atonement, Adam is reinstated in his first dominion.5The Great Controversy, 647, 648 Mar 315.1 - Mar 315.4 --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/tawasv/message

1 Corinthians 15:47 — What does it mean that Jesus is the second Adam? Adam was the first man and was the head of all of humanity. But when he sinned, he brought sin upon all his descendants, and this sin meant that all men were destined to die. In this sermon on 1 Corinthians 15:47, Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones explains why Jesus is the only hope for the world because He is the new Adam. Just as Adam brought sin and death to many, Jesus will bring life and forgiveness of sins to many! As Adam was the head of the old humanity, Christ is the head of the new humanity and all of the new creation. The only way to be freed from sin and its consequence – death – is to believe in Jesus. All those that trust in Jesus will be perfected in last day and free from all sin and judgement. Jesus is the true light of the world and He alone can save sinners and make them right with God. This sermon calls us all to forsake sin and come to Jesus. He alone makes all things new by His death and resurrection. He alone can reverse all the effects of the fall and Adam's first sin. Jesus alone saves!

Adam, grew up in small town Iowa, attended college at the University of Northern Iowa and studied finance and real estate. In 2011, Adam decided to leave his home state and move to Denver, Colorado to explore a bigger city with more diversity, arts, and culture. Once in Denver, he worked with a private equity firm for a short time before moving to Holland Partner Group where he was able to begin getting development experience and was lucky enough to work on some iconic projects like Union Denver and Platform at Union Station. Relationships were key in Adam’s transition to Colorado as well as his entrance into real estate development and he quickly became aware of how important his network would be to his success. Having come into the development world during the recession, Adam believes there are many opportunities to be found in the midst of challenge. He recommends reading the book, “The Obstacle Is the Way”, for inspirational stories about overcoming obstacles and finding the silver lining in our circumstance. After 4.5 years at Holland Partner Group, a large institutional firm, Adam moved to BMC Investments, a smaller, private equity firm focused mostly on development in Cherry Creek North in Denver. Working with these two firms, Adam gained experience in many aspects of development and realized he was ready to start a development company of his own, and launched Narrate Companies! Having a strong network has been essential for Adam to make this entrepreneurial leap and he encourages us to build strong relationships in the areas that we want to grow our business in. Adam believes there are key elements to building a strong network such as being a good listener who is present and available to those around him. He also stresses the importance of being vulnerable and putting yourself out there to find commonalities with those we are connecting with. Possibly the most important element is being trustworthy, this is absolutely necessary to cultivate deep, meaningful relationships. People can easily see through wrong motives. As Adam was building his network in the early days, he attended many networking events and made as many connections as possible. Now, further in his career, he finds that most of his valuable connects are made through intentional introductions by others in his sphere. He encourages us to be mindful and intentional about the connections we are making while remaining open to what may unexpectedly come from an introduction. Adam encourages us to do what we say we are going to do and believes everything else will usually take care of itself eventually. Now is the Judgment of the World – Because He is the Son of Man We have been looking for several weeks at the Judgment of the cross, and Jesus saying, “Now is the Judgment of the World. Now shall the prince of this world be cast out,” John 12. He makes another profound statement concerning Judgment in John 5:27 “And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man.” The Father gave all judgment to the Son, because He is the Son of Man. Why did Jesus say this? The reason for this goes back to Adam in the garden. In Genesis 1, it is recorded that God gave dominion to Adam. Adam was to rule the earth. In the Book of Psalms 8:6 and 115:16 the Bible declares that man was given dominion in the earth. As Adam fell, He brought that whole creation of man under the authority of sin and death. “Through one man’s sin entered into the world and death through sin,” Romans 5:12. So, Jesus had to come as the Son of Man to rescue us from death’s dominion. He came as a man to die the death of the cross. By becoming a man, He brought judgment upon the order of the old man and put it to death that He could bring us into His life. When He was raised from the dead, Jesus declared that all authority was given to Him in heaven and earth. This is a powerful statement, and a reality for us to come to in Christ. The Old Man, and His order was put to death. This is the separation that is made at the cross. The old man is put to death. Jesus never died in disobedience. He died to it and was raised out from it. When we receive Him, we are Baptized by the Spirit into His death, and brought forth in His life. Everything is by Him and through Him. He did this as the Son of Man, judging sin in the flesh. He came as a man to die the death of the cross and was raised out from that old creation. This is our salvation! We come to comprehend what He did, and live in it. His work is our provision. His dominion now rules over us. We no longer have to fear the wages of sin or death. Jesus is our Lord. These are not our Lord. I love what the writer says in Hebrews 2, “He destroyed Him that had the power of death, that is the devil.” This is the power of the cross. Death is defeated we are living by Him. Glory to God!
PUT ON A HAPPY FACE! As Adam returns for a brand new commentary track! This time, we delve into Todd Philips JOKER starring Joaquin Phoenix. The OSCAR winning movie has broken records around the world, but Adam is here to share his exact thoughts on the movie.
On the day I'm writing this—it's April 20, 2020, coffee shops and restaurants across the nation have been closed or altered their operations in some way. Millions of people have been laid off, and many of the folks who have lost their jobs are service workers—baristas, waitstaff, bartenders—many of whom rely on tips as a source of their income. In this episode, I'm talking to Adam JacksonBey, the coffee pro behind GoFundBean. GoFundBean is a collection of virtual tip jars that serves as a nexus for people who want to help baristas who are out of work. That dollar that you’d usually tip for a coffee? You can go to GoFundBean and give it directly to one of the thousands of baristas who can’t work right now. In this conversation, we talk a lot about GoFundBean and how necessary it is because so many service professionals make a huge chunk of their earnings in tips. But we also talk a lot about tipping in general. As Adam will talk about in this episode, GoFundBean isn't necessarily an effort one wants to be successful. It's one that has to be successful in order to keep people fed, help them pay their rent, but in an ideal world, tips—and the precarious nature of tipping in general—wouldn't be part of the service industry model. There's a lot of literature on the history of tipping, which we touch upon briefly in this episode, so you might want to give that a google search before you dive in, but if you're ready, I hope you leave this conversation with a framework to imagine a world without tipping—and what that could mean for the way we value and pay service workers. Here's Adam.
On today's podcast, we have the pleasure of speaking with multi award winning country music artist, and all round great guy, Adam Brand for the second time on the show, in person as he joins us in the Luke and Susie studio. A lot has happened since we last spoke with Adam including becoming a Dad and welcoming the birth of his first child, a beautiful baby girl, as well as the release of his brand new album, "Speed of Life". As Adam describes it, “The whole experience of making this album was a vastly different experience to all the other albums I’ve done in the last 20 years. It was a calm and stress free process and I put that down to the place in life I’m at. I felt no pressure in putting this album together… no urgency to find that big hit song… to be honest I let my heart guide me this time, and my heart was full of the wonderful notion of my baby girl who was about to be born. I whole heartedly believe she gave me that calmness and clarity in knowing what I wanted to sing about this time around." We'll find out more about the album, his cooking skills and what it's like becoming a Dad for the first time...

EPISODE 25: Back after a few weeks off and well... a surprise for Adam as Wayne's daughter seems to want to fire him! Lily finally storms off and then Adam has some "equipment" trouble. All gets fixed then Adam and Wayne review that travesty of a game in What Was That. Some fun stories, some Social Shenanigans and a few laughs are had by all. A new segment that Adam knew nothing about turns out to be a good idea as Wayne reveals his Bag Head for this week and you learn a little West Ham folklore. Pie and Mashup wraps up the episode with a tune, lyrics from Jack Gambardella, Wayne and Adam butcher a classic song but it is so worth the wait. As Adam says, "Stay positive and love your lives!" Wayne would rather drink a bottle of whiskey.
For the 4th Sunday of Epiphany, Adam and Lindsey read Matthew 5:1-12. Jesus has got some attitude in this one… some beatitude, to be exact! Flipping our understanding of blessing completely upside-down, Jesus proclaims that we are loved, cherished and embraced in the midst of our suffering. What draws the crowds to Jesus in the first place; why have so many come to hear him speak from this mountain? Before the words come the actions. Jesus has built relationships by ministering to the sick and suffering, healing them and restoring them to their communities. He has gone out and actually blessed the poor in spirit before proclaiming that blessing. We are called to follow. The beatitudes root the struggle for justice in God’s love, drawing attention to the people for whom we struggle rather than catching us up in the violence we seek to overcome. They remind us that those who suffer – and those who compassionately enter into the suffering of others – are blessed because God loves them and because they are reflecting God’s love to others.Adam and Lindsey discuss each beatitude, the ones they find inspiring and the ones they find difficult. (All of them are different combinations of both!) What do these similar but differently-worded blessings mean? What does it mean to possess the kingdom of heaven now, or to be promised the inheritance of the earth in the future? What does it mean that the pure in heart “see God” or that the peacemakers are “children of God”?And what in the world could it truly mean to “be glad” when facing persecution? As Adam and Lindsey wrestle with these questions, they invite you to ponder them anew and share your insights.
Several years ago, Kerry Anderson and her serial-entrepreneur husband Adam made a joint decision for Kerry to leave her career as a paediatric nurse and become a stay-at-home mom to their two children. It wasn’t long before Kerry realised just how challenging this new role was. Between Adam’s intense travel schedule, the ups and downs of owning/operating a business, managing employees, and surviving the occasionally failed startup (and accompanying financial losses), Kerry quickly learned that being an entrepreneurial spouse was not easy. As Adam evolved into a business owner, the stress took its toll on their family. Resentment, distance, and suspicion flooded their marriage, leaving Kerry feeling helplessly trapped. When she and Adam hit their breaking point, they sought counselling and started down a path of healing. They also developed their own therapeutic strategies, modelled after the business practices & meetings they had grown so accustomed to, and they saw their relationship improve. Over the years, Kerry and Adam met many other young couples who were just starting out in their own businesses, and each had the same question: “How did you do it?” After sharing the same nuggets of wisdom throughout dozens of conversations, Kerry decided to share her story and insight in In Bed With the Business, a practical survival guide for entrepreneurial couples. Today she and Adam are sharing their journey with couples who may be struggling with the same issues that plagued their own marriage. Through Whole Life Entrepreneurship, Kerry and Adam are building a supportive global community of entrepreneurs and their spouses who can relate and empathize with the struggles they each face, empowering one another to successfully navigate the chaotic world of marriage and entrepreneurship.

Jesus' identity, purpose, trust and power are tested in the wilderness. As Adam, Eve and Israel failed when tempted, Jesus succeed. How do we, then, find our way in the wilderness? How do we navigate our journey when we are tempted and tested the way Jesus was in the wilderness? Our way in the wilderness is won through God's Word and our worship. God's Word speaks words of identity and purpose, reminding us who we are to trust and the cruciform power we claim as followers of Jesus. And, everyday worship postures's our hearts on God's presence so that we can praise him in each moment.

However, there is a solution that has made it simpler for end-users to have the security they deserve. Amber Christian interviews Adam Stone, the VP of Consulting Services and Chief Privacy Officer of Secure Digital Solutions, on the subject concerning security and privacy. Adam introduces the term “privacy by design” which was created by Ann Cavoukian and how it was specifically made for users to have more trust and confidence in the products they are using. After Adam applied and perfected the 15 plus years of experience he gained marketing in a variety of industries which included building and selling an app for the Sunbed and tanning salon sector, to his company Sargeants Roofing, Adam has since begun helping other Roofing contractors automate their business and marketing processes. His main focus is now his current venture Roofing Business Partner where he is helping other roofing contractors. It's fair to say the marketing landscape has changed for every business owner across every industry. As Adam explains, just a few short years ago most businesses had only a couple of easy marketing decisions to make each year – the main one being what size is my ad in the yellow pages going to be along with a couple of options like a local newspaper for example. Then came the internet and virtually unlimited opportunity. During this chat, we covered: the future of trade businesses what has changed is the website space and how to climb to the top of Google so your customers can find you Facebook ads and how he has used them to grow his own business how tradesman and contractors should use Instagram, and simplifying and automating trade businesses To find out more about Adam and his current work, head to https://roofingbusinesspartner.com. FixerUpperMarriage.org/romance Romance is the fuel that feeds the flames of passion and love. Romance is the yearning of the young heart and the ambition of the aged. Romance is the key that turns the lock of loneliness and liberates the secrets of the soul. Listen in as we uncover the mystery of romance from the pages of the Bible. Ephesians 5: 31,32 and Genesis 2: 23,24 In the beginning, God gathered the dust of the ground, shaped the body of a man, and breathed into him the incredible breath of life. Then from man God made one of His most intriguing creations, woman. Together the two made an amazing union, as they became husband and wife. This was a match defined by the most powerful emotions in the known to man: love, passion, and romance. So this is how it all it began, a story where these same emotions perfected would redeem mankind from sin, despair, and an eternity in the flames of Hell. This is the Mystery of Romance... The Mystery in the Pursuit of Romance The Pursuit of Romance in Creation In creating man, the feeling of loneliness was realized. This is not just a feeling of no one to talk to, but a deep loneliness for sharing. It became clear that man needed a companion of his equal, a person to share his life with. He needed a person who he could trust with all his hopes, dreams, and aspirations; a person he could become uninhibited in his vulnerability with. God looked down at His creation of man and saw this deep need, and went into action. And the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a help meet for him. Genesis 2: 18 The great Creator put Adam to sleep and from his rib made a new creature, a women. As Adam woke, his eyes were filled with the most amazing thing he had ever seen, and the feeling of love with all it passion of romance was conceived. This is a love that transcends just friendship, it was a love between a man and his wife, a lifetime commitment of togetherness, two lives became one. They would become best friends, to share every moment of life's experiences with. Adam had a person to care for. They would know each other like no one else in the world could ever know. With one creative act, God solved the problem of loneliness with the invention of the bond of marriage. Two lives intertwined in ways that are designed to fulfill natural needs for companionship and intimacy. And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed the flesh instead thereof; And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from the man, made he woman, and brought her unto the man. Genesis 2: 21-22 Nevertheless, the devil would deceive us with cheap, ugly replacements for the beautiful design of holiness in marriage. The deception of living together without the lifetime commitment of marriage.
Do corporations have rights? Aaron Freiwald, Managing Partner of Freiwald Law and host of the weekly podcast, Good Law | Bad Law, is joined by Adam Winkler, a UCLA law professor and author of the new book “We The Corporations.” Aaron and Adam discuss the constitutional rights of corporations in America. Wait, the what? The First Amendment is often thought of as protection for citizens; it guarantees freedom of religion, speech and freedom of speech. We don’t often think about those rights being extended to corporations. The same is true for many of the rights guaranteed by the Constitution. Of course, that is exactly what happened in 2010 when the Supreme Court decided the controversial Citizens United case, allowing corporations to donate vast sums to political campaigns because, the Court found, corporations have speech rights. As Adam explains, this case has a very long history. Indeed, the Supreme Court has been protecting the rights of corporations for longer than the rights of many individual Americans. Citizens United, Masterpiece Cakeshop and Hobby Lobby, are just a few cases that have passed through our court system addressing the issue of corporate rights. G.W. LATIMER, an author who is currently living in Seattle, joined us to discuss his newest release, "Walking Through Brambles", as is published by Zimbell House Publishing. From the Zimbell House Publishing Website: "Walking Through Brambles covers a year-in-the-life of a self-proclaimed middle-aged, mainstream exile as he re-discovers himself and builds a new life in a small coastal town in southern Oregon. Adam Moore reveals an environment that is bucolic and an ethos that is perplexing but warm as he learns his way around his new town, meets his neighbors, and copes with his fantasies around the mysterious woman who lived in his house before him. As Adam seeks counsel from his cat and other inhabitants of Valencia, he invents histories of strangers while he recovers from a loneliness masked with insight and humor, finding peace at last. "
Adam Schaeuble, aka The PHD (previously heavy dude), is the host of the top ranked fitness podcast "The Million Pound Mission" (and the recently launched "Casting the Pod"). He reached a point in his life where he weighed 327lbs and was already having weight related health issues in his late twenties. He decided to overhaul his lifestyle and his fitness and ended up losing over 100lbs. Feeling inspired, he took what he learned from his own transformation journey and created a bootcamp program that produced over 35,000 lbs of results in his home town of Bloomington, IN. Now Adam has set his sights on inspiring over one million pounds of healthy results through his podcast, coaching programs, and the Million Pound Mission Bootcamp. Key Points from the Episode with Adam Schaeuble: 10+ years ago, Adam Schaeuble found himself in a place where he was overweight at 327 pounds, he was depressed, the woman of his dreams was going to move away and he was $40,000 in debt. Friends kept pushing some personal development material in front of him, but he wasn’t ready for it until one day, he decided to watch a DVD of The Secretand the Law of Attraction. He realized what he was attracting in his life was contributing to his situation. That woke him up. He followed the advice, and wrote out what he wanted his life to look like five years from that moment. The hardest thing about it was that he had to write it all in positive terms, like avoiding saying, “I’m debt-free” and instead saying, “I am financially abundant." His statement went something like this, "Today is June 17th, 2012, I’ve lost 100 pounds, I’m full of energy, and my business is abundant." And he repeated the full statement every morning and every night for five years. This helped frame his day in the morning, and create accountability for delivering on progress toward those goals every day. He was able to do it almost to the day (he was off by 1 week), having lost over 100 pounds, founded his gym, helping others change their lives, and marrying that woman who he as afraid he was going to lose. As Adam says, he decided he as worth it. The repetition and positivity made things that had been difficult or uncomfortable that he needed to bring into his life more comfortable, easy and eventually things he actually enjoyed. It created a reinforcing set of positive habits that have allowed his mission to grow. He built his days around easy tasks that were bite-sized that he could do, kept his Why front and center through that statement he kept repeating, and he was able to make huge progress. It is a very Do a Day type approach of daily execution without pressure from before or after. He teaches The Transformation Timeline, with three phases. We got into the first two (and then went off on a tangent): Coachability - this is where most people get stuck. This is where the cycle of trying something new, losing weight, life happens, gaining the weight back, and going round and round again is. Being coachable allows us to handle those life moments so we can stay moving forward instead of getting caught in the cycle. The Healthy Lifestyle - make a healthier lifestyle the norm through some rearranging things, getting to know your Why and identifying with it so you have the strong place to go back to when you need it. He has started to focus on 90 day sprints now rather than five year timelines because so much is happening and he is seeing so much growth. This has helped him to understand how different timelines may be appropriate for different people or situations. We talked about Michael Hyatt’s Best Year Ever, and the two types of goals in the book - achievement goals and habit goals. Adam believes we all need a big achievement goal to get us focused on a great finish line, while the habit goals are the daily things we need to shift to support our achievement goals. For example, if your achievement goal is to run a marathon, a habit goal would be around your daily training to support that achievement. Adam challenged us all to write out what we want to achieve in the next month, and do it all in positive language. No “don’t” “not” or “no”, but also no negative ideas like debt, fat, pain, etc. We talked about the idea many people have to just get through whatever they’re facing now before they try to make change or get a coach. In fact, that’s exactly when you need it most. You can’t wait for life to stop so you can fix things. It doesn’t work that way, so you need to get help when you need it, not when it’s convenient. Philippians 4:4 NLT Always be full of joy in the Lord. I say it again – rejoice! Stress will make you irritable, tired, negative and cynical. None of these are attractive lifestyle choices. In building up resilience to stress, each of us needs deliberately to cultivate means to strengthen stress management. There are obvious ways, such as eating regularly a balanced diet, and breath prayer. It is also important to keep hydrated. However, changing our mood is critical too. When I first visited the USA, I was in awe of the apparent success of every individual I met. They were full of self-confidence. I soon realised this was ‘the American way’, where perception is reality. My learning was useful for I recognised as I perceived life, so it was. My mind took a view and then I checked in and determined how I would perceive the sequence my mind presented me with. I was not going to have my mood dictate to me. Yes, my feelings may be the product of stress, yet I recognised that I decided how I would treat such stress. I would move away from the circumstances that lowered my mood, raised my temper, generated the cynical and sarcastic me, and find a space to be still and separate myself from the situation for a moment. Here I readjusted my perception and settled upon the joy in God that was no less mine when stressed than when relaxing on my own terms in the Oratory garden. God is unchangeable (Hebrews 13:8). I needed to take hold of my perception. Will I yield to my mood born of my perception, or accept myself as God accepts me and choose to rejoice and rest in the divine? As Adam and Eve discovered, obeying God is about exercising my own will, not using God as some crutch or panacea for my life’s many challenges. QUESTION: How do you see your life – is it with a positive or cynical perspective? PRAYER: Lord, help me to remember who you are and what you’ve done, and allow my soul to delight in you.
Every film is both a product of its environment, and a rebellion against it. Artists (and audiences) search for something new and fresh, but cannot escape the world as it exists around them. Die Hard is no exception. While Die Hard is often marked as a turning point in American action cinema, we must first look at the state of action cinema as it existed before 1988. What does a “typical” 80s action movie look like? What artistic and societal pressures shaped that mold? And in what ways does Die Hard break it? Every film is both a product of its environment, and a rebellion against it. Artists (and audiences) search for something new and fresh, but cannot escape the world as it exists around them. Die Hard is no exception. While Die Hard is often marked as a turning point in American action cinema, we must first look at the state of action cinema as it existed before 1988. What does a “typical” 80s action movie look like? What artistic and societal pressures shaped that mold? And in what ways does Die Hard break it? But before we talk about 80s films, let’s talk about… 70s films. 70s cinema was a time when shit started to get real. After years of glossy studio pictures, filmmakers wanted to show things as they really were. And with Vietnam, Watergate, the oil crisis, rising crime in cities, and so much more, things were… fucked up. And the movies made then reflected that. They were dark, pessimistic, gritty, bleak. No happy endings to be found here. Midnight Cowboy and Taxi Driver are two of the most 70s-ish depressing-ass movies that I like to point out as an example of this. [CLIP: MIDNIGHT COWBOY - I’M WALKING HERE] With that mood in mind, let’s drill down into some specifics. [INTERVIEW: ED GRABIANOWSKI I’m Ed Grabianowski, and I am a longtime writer; I’ve written for sites like io9 and How Stuff Works and a whole bunch of others, and I also write horror and fantasy fiction. If you go back to the 70s, there weren’t really movies in the 70s that were just like action movies, like that you would just define as action movies, to the extent there were later. You instead got sort of different sub-genres; you had sort of like cops and robbers movies with gunfights and car chases, and then you had like martial arts movies with lots of fist fights and sword fights.] Within this general movement, a few particular genres stand out. There was a lot going on in 70s film as the studios’ creative control was usurped by a new wave of auteur filmmakers. Now of course, there were lots of popular genres in this moment, all important in their own ways, like science fiction, horror, spaghetti Westerns, blaxploitation films, kung-fu movies. You can see some through lines from then, to the 80s, and into Die Hard in particular. But for our discussion today, we’re going to focus on three: disaster movies, paranoid political thrillers, and rogue cops and vigilantes. Let’s start with disaster movies. [INTERVIEW: ED GRABIANOWSKI And then you had the disaster movie subgenre, which was a huge trend for a while, and that was more based on spectacle and the visuals of a disaster happening. And also interestingly tended to be more ensemble casts.] After all, As we discussed in our first episode, Die Hard was directly inspired by one of the best-known disaster movies of the 70s: 1974’s The Towering Inferno. These movies featured people going about their business – attending a party, trying to catch a flight, taking a nice little cruise. Then BAM! A fire starts, a bomb goes off, a tsunami hits. These disasters, some natural, some natural-with-the-help-of-man’s-hubris, and some entirely man-made strike large groups of people, who we quickly learn are totally expendable. We follow these thinly written characters in multiple plot lines as they try to escape, survive, or stop whatever calamity is going on. In the process, the audience gets to experience their peril... which usually includes a bunch of explosions. The Towering Inferno boasts an all-star cast that includes Steve McQueen, Paul Newman, Faye Dunaway, and Fred Astaire. Our main characters are at a dedication ceremony for the new Glass Tower, the now-tallest building in the world. (As an aside, I work quite close to Salesforce Tower in San Francisco, which is currently the tallest building in San Francisco and the second-tallest west of the Mississippi. The fictional Glass Tower in the movie is taller than both of those by 500 feet. And every time I look at it I think about either The Towering Inferno or Nakatomi Tower, and neither of those are things you want to think about on your lunch break.) While at the ceremony, a fire breaks out on the 81st floor, trapping the people above. A group makes it to the roof for an attempted helicopter rescue, but the copter crashes and sets the roof on fire. After many thwarted attempts to escape, Steve McQueen and Paul Newman use plastic explosives to blow up the water tanks on the top of the building, flooding the floors below and putting out the fire. [CLIP: THE TOWERING INFERNO TRAILER] It’s easy to see how novelist Roderick Thorp could see that movie, dream about it, throw in some terrorists, and come up with the seed of Die Hard. As the Watergate scandal unfolded, the paranoid political thriller came to the fore. We’re talking Three Days of the Condor, Parallax View, and obviously All the President’s Men. These are films mostly centered on an individual uncovering a government conspiracy, and trying to either expose it or just escape with their life. But, fitting with the general mood of American cinema at the time, things usually don’t work out too well for the protagonists. Spoiler alert – in these films, usually the big bad government conspiracy gets away with it, leaving the heroes either dead or defeated. The individual, no matter what knowledge they’re armed with, is helpless against the faceless cabal that keeps the populace in line. To put it bluntly, the government is all-powerful and all-knowing, and you, the lone citizen, are fucked if you go against them. [CLIP: ALL THE PRESIDENT’S MEN TRAILER ] The final 70s genre we’re looking at as a direct influence to Die Hard is the “rogue cop” or “vigilante” movie. The protagonists in these films are also lone individuals, but of a different stripe than what we’ll see later: they’re the anti-heroes. They’re deeply messed up in some way. They’re the cop who doesn’t play by the rules, or the everyman who gets pushed too far by society and turns to violence. Death Wish, Dirty Harry, The French Connection. These movies manifest the existential dread of audiences who feared social upheaval, economic instability, and rising crime in cities. And then they offer the wish fulfillment of being able to buck the rules and do things your way – no matter what the police chief says. [CLIP: DIRTY HARRY] As Ed pointed out earlier, the 70s didn’t have what we consider a blanket “action movie” – as you can see, the genres we just talked about had action in them, but it wasn’t the defining characteristic of the movie. If the word “action” was used to describe a movie in generic terms at all, it was usually paired with the word “adventure” to convey something more fantastic and epic. But moreover, the action in these films was, well… kind of a bummer. Violence and destruction were used to emphasize the more troubling aspects of our society. Even if these scenes were exciting, they were heavy. They were serious. So what tipped these old genres over into a new kind of film at the start of the decade? [INTERVIEW: ED GRABIANOWSKI It just sort of happened. There’s – yes, people – there’s this sort of gestalt like, let’s take elements of all these things and make something that just embodies all of that. And that became the action movie.] Audiences were transforming from Steven and Elyse Keatons into Alex P. Keatons. But in addition to a transition from Carter and the recession to Reagan and a “greed is good” economy, the film industry in particular had new pressures and opportunities that ushered in a new era of filmmaking. David Bordwell, Professor of Film Studies at the University of Wisconsin – Madison, sums it up: “With the new attractiveness of the global market, the demands of home video, and increasingly sophisticated special effects, the 1980s brought the really violent action movie into its own.” Bordwell amusingly closes his exploration of 80s action movies with one, lone sentence: “I save for last the obligatory mention of Die Hard, the Jaws of the 1980s: a perfectly engineered entertainment.” Guess that statement stands on its own... The writer of Die Hard and Commando, Steven De Souza, expands on Bordwell’s point about the global market. He says, “I would argue that the genre of an ‘action movie’ is a completely false creature. There is no such thing as an action movie. All movies have action. ‘Action movie’ is a term that was invented in the ‘80s. I think Commando may have been the first one in 1985. They noticed for the first time that a handful of American movies were making more money overseas than in America. This had never happened before. Commando made 60% of its money overseas and 40% in the US. Action speaks louder than words. You don’t need to read the subtitles to know it was a bad idea to kidnap Arnold Schwarzenegger’s little girl. I disagree with the idea that there is such thing as an action movie, but we are stuck with that term now.” Well, if we’re stuck with that term, let’s go with it. So: what makes an action movie? In the 80s, “physical action and violence [became] the organizing principle, from the plot, to the dialogue, to the casting.” That’s according to academic reference site Oxford Bibliographies. Picture your typical action movie poster. There’s probably some kind of aircraft or ship or ground vehicle, maybe a hot lady kinda small and in the corner there… there’s definitely a bunch of fire… And standing tall in the middle, our hero. And he’s probably holding a gun. The lone hero is one of the defining characteristics of what we think of the stereotypical action movie. But he – and it’s almost always a “he” – is different than our “rogue cop” of the 1970s. The 80s action star was a one-man army, alone more powerful than the hordes of henchman thrown up against him. Our hero might have a sidekick or lead a small team, but in the end they’re either ineffectual and/or expendable – by the end of the film, it’s our protagonist who takes down the bad guy by himself. The action hero inhabits his body, not his mind. His powers come from physical strength (and firepower) instead of cleverness. I mean, when we meet Arnold Schwarzenegger in Commando, we see multiple shots of his biceps before we even see his face. As IndieWire put it, the heroes are “obscenely pumped-up one-man fighting machine[s]... outrageously entertaining comic-book depictions of outsized masculinity.” [INTERVIEW: ADAM STERNBERGH My name is Adam Sternbergh. I’m a novelist and a contributing editor to New York Magazine and a pop culture journalist. 80s action films, as we think of them now, they’re very excessive, they’re all about a sort of oversized machismo and enormous guns and enormous muscles and enormous explosions. Which was very exhilarating, but I think even by the time Die Hard came out, was starting to feel a little bit tired, and there was a hunger for action film fans – certainly myself, I would have been about seventeen or eighteen, for something a little bit different.] [INTERVIEW: SCOTT WAMPLER My name is Scott Wampler, I’m the news editor at Birth. Movies. Death. I’m also the host of the Trying Times podcast. The first word that’s coming to mind is “sweaty.” When I think of action movies in the 80s I think of, you know, dudes that are super cut up, they look like condoms filled with walnuts, and they’re always glistening with sweat. And usually there’s a dirty tank top involved, or maybe some camo pants.] [INTERVIEW: SHANNON HUBBELL My name is Shannon Hubbell, I’m editor-in-chief of LewtonBus.net. I’d say action films of the 80s – I mean, it’s obviously dominated by Schwarzenegger and Stallone, and so a lot of the larger action films are centered around big, burly, unstoppable killing machines. Just barely human. Other than Terminator, that kinda thing doesn’t yank my chain. But also, you have things like, say, Escape from New York – smaller fare, different types of heroes, anti-heroes, instead of just hulking, machine-gun-spraying douchebags.] Matrix and Dutch, Rambo and Cobra – these guys were far from helpless. Once pulled into a conflict by circumstance, our hero is unstoppable. It’s a reclaiming of agency that had been taken away by faceless forces in the 70s. Our heroes’ incredible power is just that: incredible. I know this might be shocking news to you, but a lot of these 80s action movies are… unrealistic. After all, in Predator, Arnold escapes a thermo-nuclear explosion by just… running away. These guys are superheroes pretending to be regular dudes. Comic book movies weren’t so much a thing yet, although we did have that platonic ideal of a superhero – Superman – appear onscreen in ‘78, ‘81, ‘83, and ‘87. But invulnerability is okay. That’s part of the appeal. We want the heroes that fight for truth, justice, and the American way to be assured of victory. This leads into another characteristic of 80s action: patriotism. Now, of course, not all of our protagonists are American. Arnold definitely does not – er… can not – try to pass for an American, and neither can Jean Claude Van Damme. But most of our protagonists are not only American, but working-class, everymen Americans who are just trying to get by with an honest day’s work. Sometimes that honest day’s work involves special forces missions, but you know what I mean. Adam Sternbergh explains. [INTERVIEW: ADAM STERNBERGH There was a sort of parallel ascent of the John Rambo paradigm, and Ronald Reagan. And Reagan was quite open about making references to Rambo, and I think Reagan at one point quoted the Dirty Harry line, “Make my day.” And there was a real sense in American culture that post the 1970s, post Jimmy Carter, post this national ennui or whatever people decided had overtaken the country, that America was being proud of being America again, and part of that was watching movies in which American POWs blow entire countries. And in fact the third Rambo movie is just sort of a ridiculous patriotism porn where he goes to Afghanistan and essentially single-handedly defeats the Russian Army in Afghanistan. That kind of action movie, I think if you look at it in a historical, sociological context, it made perfect sense for the national mood.] [CLIP: REAGAN AND RAMBO] In other words, if America was in fact a shining city on a hill, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, and Carl Weathers were there to guard its walls. Finally, the hallmark of an action movie is all the… [GUNSHOTS, EXPLOSIONS] If you’re having a celebration of American masculinity and strength, what else are you gonna do but blow shit up? There was certainly a fetishization of weapons in the preceding decade. Robert Blake’s character Beretta shared his name with that of a gun manufacturer, and Dirty Harry gives a whole soliloquy about his .45 Magnum. But the films that followed had to be bigger. Louder. If the 70s were the decade of the handgun, the 80s were the decade of the automatic weapon. [CLIP: NOW I HAVE A MACHINE GUN, HO HO HO] General explosions were also bigger and better, due to improved special effects technologies. The disaster movie of course had terrific destruction, but the buildings getting blown up were more obviously flimsy sets, if not just miniatures. And to me, the differentiating factor that separates 70s action from 80s action, was that 80s violence and destruction was… celebratory. It was fun. It was generally free of consequence. Our hero can’t die, remember? And the bad guys he’s blowing away are largely faceless cartoon characters, a dime a dozen. It was perfectly okay to sit in a theater and shove popcorn in your mouth while large-scale mayhem unfolded before your eyes. With these definitions in place, let’s go back and tick off the action movie characteristics that Die Hard shares. Lone hero? Check. John McClane is almost totally alone, with only a walkie-talkie as a tether to the outside world. The LAPD and FBI are ostensibly on his side, but they’re certainly not working with him. John must face a whole gang of terrorists by himself to rescue his wife. We’re confident that he’ll achieve his goal, even if things look dicey sometimes. [INTERVIEW: ADAM STERNBERGH I mean, Die Hard was similar in the sense that it featured a sort of lone, male protagonist who’s battling against the odds, and if faced with a sort of intractable situation where he’s trying to fight his way out using his brains and brawn. An interesting parallel is the movie Commando, which came out just a couple years earlier with Arnold Schwarzenegger, and he basically has 24 or 48 hours save his daughter from these evil military types. And he goes about breaking everyone’s neck and shooting a bunch of people and blowing things up, and spoiler: he saves the daughter at the end. And so in that sense, Die Hard was sort of a very familiar setup. It obviously was kind of ingenious setup because it launched its own mini-genre of movies, which was the “Die Hard in a blankity-blank movie.”] Physical prowess? Mmm, not as much. John McClane isn’t in bad shape, not at all. He’s a cop, he can brawl. But he’s not one of those guys with “gleaming sweat [and] bulging muscles that couldn’t possibly exist without chemical enhancement... A bodybuilder’s fever dream, the sort of thing he might imagine after doing a mountain of blow and watching nothing but early MTV for 48 hours,” as the AV Club puts it. [INTERVIEW: ADAM STERNBERGH Everything else was moving in that direction, toward more invulnerable, more muscular, more explosive. And then Die Hard came along and said, what if a real, normal guy found himself in this situation? What would he do, and how would he prevail?] Bruce Willis’s embodiment of a wisecracking cop caught in an extraordinary situation was a key factor in John McClane’s believability. [INTERVIEW: SHANNON HUBBELL On paper, just like describing Die Hard to someone, you can totally imagine Schwarzenegger playing that role, or Stallone playing that role. It’s the details and execution that makes it different. You have a character who is fallible, and hurtable and emotionally vulnerable, which is not something that comes across in a paragraph synopsis of Die Hard.] John is a pretty regular guy. He gets tired, he gets hurt. In fact, his physical vulnerability in the original Die Hard is famous. [CLIP: SHOOT THE GLASS] [INTERVIEW: ADAM STERNBERGH From the very beginning of the movie, when he takes his shoes off at the beginning of the movie, you know, he’s in bare feet, he’s incredibly vulnerable and there’s this real sense that he’s this regular guy, who, there’s no way he’s going to accomplish this. He doesn’t even seem to believe it at the beginning. And it makes it so much more satisfying at the end of the movie when he does; he’s bloodied and he’s broken and his feet are bleeding. And that was just so different from that kind of Rambo, Schwarzenegger paradigm that had been established that had been so successful.] When you watch an action movie, you get the thrill of watching a superman executing a perfect plan. But watching a normal guy making it up as he goes along in Die Hard, you start to wonder – what would I do in this situation? We’ll get more into McClane’s physical and emotional vulnerability in our next episode. Patriotism? Die Hard isn’t an explicitly jingoistic film. There aren’t American flags waving as soldiers fight to defend American values. But we do have John, a white, heterosexual, working-class dude as our hero. See, not only is John representative of the American way of life, he also reflects a tension between classes within America, as well as in relationship to other world powers. Our bad guys are an International House of Terrorists, including what Ellis calls… [CLIP: ELLIS EUROTRASH] [INTERVIEW: ADAM STERNBERGH I think there’s definitely some quintessential American ideas of class in the movie, and it’s not a mistake that the terrorists are not just Europeans but they’re all wearing turtlenecks and sort of beautiful European clothes and then there is a whole conversation in the elevator between Hans and Mr. Takagi about their suits and their respective tailors. And John McClane’s just a guy with a singlet on, running around like Johnny Lunchbucket. And I think at that particular moment in American history, that was a very resonant idea, again because there was this sense of America’s influence in the world being undermined – in particular by Japan, but just in general. American industry and this sort of notion of the blue-collar American economy was faltering in coming out of the 1970s. There was a sense that that was changing. So McClane is interesting, and I wonder if you made Die Hard now, if he would still be a New York cop, or if they would try to make him even more of a kind of heartland hero.] It’s also worth noting the presence of another foreign “threat” in Die Hard. The Nakatomi Corporation represents a very real American fear in the 80s that the Japanese wouldn’t so much invade as they would conduct a hostile takeover. Richard Brody of The New Yorker explains: “There’s another ethnic anxiety that the movie represents—the film is centered on the Nakatomi Corporation, headed by a Japanese-American man named Joseph Takagi, which is an emblem of the then widely stoked fear that Japanese high-tech businesses were threatening to dominate the American economy.” At the time, the Japanese economy was booming thanks to post-World War II reconstruction and a strong manufacturing industry. Japanese corporations began buying American companies, starting with car factories, steel works, and media companies – industries that are held as quintessentially American. [CLIP: TAKAGI TAPE DECKS] [INTERVIEW: ADAM STERNBERGH It also has interesting strains of things that were happening in politics at the time, you know, the whole idea of a Japanese corporation that’s come to America and is a powerful corporation, and then the American inevitably has to save them. There’s a little mini-genre of 80s-era films that were sort of about America’s anxiety about Japan’s rising influence in the world. So I think a little bit of that is in Die Hard. You know, this sort of twist of having the terrorists be political terrorists who just turn out to be greedy robbers, was a little bit of a wink at the notion that all the other movies were about politics.] As Adam points out, American fear of this so-called threat can be seen in more than just Die Hard. 1986’s Gung Ho is specifically about a Japanese company buying Michael Keaton’s character’s auto plant. The Back to the Future series (which kicked off in 1985) also has a few telling moments. [CLIP: BACK TO THE FUTURE ALL THE BEST STUFF IS MADE IN JAPAN] [CLIP: BACK TO THE FUTURE II McFLY’S BOSS] In Die Hard, Nakatomi is positioned as not just another Japanese mega-corporation with more money than they know what to do with, but it’s also the company that is threatening to take Holly away from John. Okay, onto our last action movie qualifier: [CLIP: GUNSHOTS, EXPLOSIONS] Welp, I think it’s pretty safe to say that Die Hard has big explosions and over-the-top stunts. Lots of ‘em – and really good ones, too. They’re well choreographed and a pleasure to watch. Plus, they keep their own sense of fun. Having your hero dispatch a bad guy and follow it with a quippy remark is a classic action movie cliche. [CLIP: FEET SMALLER THAN MY SISTER] But the difference is that Bruce Willis has the comedy acting chops to actually pull it off. Look, Arnold’s great at a lot of things, but line delivery ain’t one of ‘em. [CLIP: LET OFF SOME STEAM] In the end, Die Hard is very much in the mold of traditional 80s action movies – and where it breaks that mold, is where it improves upon it. Hollywood’s been trying to recapture that magic ever since. [INTERVIEW: SCOTT WAMPLER I would say that it probably broke a general mold that had a hold on Hollywood for at least a decade. Outside of the work of say, Stallone, Schwarzenegger, who – you know, Schwarzenegger did a lot of sci-fi stuff, and Stallone – Stallone’s always been pretty ‘oo-rah American.’ But I think Hollywood as a whole, it definitely reformed the template, you know? There were shock waves coming off of Die Hard for at least a decade. You can still feel them.] [INTERVIEW: ADAM STERNBERGH I remember sitting in the theater and watching the movie and just being completely blown away by how great it was and how fresh it felt. That is really the thing I wonder if people watching it now can appreciate, is just how it felt like this gust of fresh air, given all the films that had come before. And those action films again, they were all tightly packed in in just like six or seven years in the 80s. It was a very sort of young genre itself. But this kinda came in and it was just a complete reinvention of what an action film could be, and John McClane was a completely different kind of hero, and it was so exhilarating.] The elevated craft of Die Hard, from the airtight script to McTiernan’s direction to De Bont’s cinematography, to the performances of Willis and Rickman, took what could have been an unremarkable summer flick and turned it into a classic. [INTERVIEW: KATIE WALSH My name’s Katie Walsh. I am a film critic for the Tribune News Service and LA Times. You know, you see enough bad action movies, and then you watch Die Hard, and you’re like, “This is so impeccably made.” The cinematography is gorgeous, there’s these amazing camera movements, and the lighting and all of the stuff that’s going on is just so perfect. And then you’re like, “Okay, this is a perfect movie.” I think cinephiles now are saying John McTiernan’s an amazing director, Jan De Bont is an amazing cinematographer, the craft that goes into this movie is impeccable, and it’s a very well-made movie; I think people are recognizing that.] In our next episode, we’ll dig in to arguably the most important contributor to Die Hard’s success: the character of John McClane, and Bruce Willis’s portrayal of him. So get ready, take off your shoes, make some fists with your toes, and join us next time. Thank you to our guests Adam Sternbergh, Scott Wampler, Shannon Hubbell, Ed Grabionowski, and Katie Walsh. Be sure to check the show notes on the website to learn more about them. Thanks again for joining me, and yippee-kai-yay, motherfuckers!

Takeaways Know What to do Next: You just made the investment in acquiring data, hashing out your target accounts and cold prospecting, but what happens when you actually get someone on the phone? Make sure you build out at least the basic infrastructure to know how to handle responses both positive and negative. If your goal is a meeting, make sure you’re not getting stuck in a 20-message email thread or look silly when your prospect ends up on your website talking to your chatbot. Put Your Hands on the Keyboard: Building from the last takeaway, when you work with smaller numbers, you have the opportunity to get more personal in your messaging. Instead of letting your sales automation do all the work, put your hands on the keyboard and customize your outreach. Make it obvious that your message could not have been meant for anyone else other than the person you’re sending it to. As Adam said,, you can only deliver your first impression once. Leverage Messaging from Paid Advertising: If your company has invested in PPC or any other forms of paid advertising, sit with them to understand what’s working. What headlines are getting the best click-through rate? Which messages are getting the best conversion rate? These tests make for great email subject lines as well as quick notes. Our guest on today's episode might sound familiar - that's because he's our voice over guy. Adam, or Burnsey as he's more affectionately known, was a part of our team in 2016-17, before departing on a world-wide trip with his wife, Jade. Not only are they heading overseas, but they're finishing their jobs to live abroad for 14 months. A key inspiration for Adam is to live in the present. He shares that throughout his life, he's just gone through the motions, moving from one thing to the next. It's easy to do. For Adam and Jade, their trip is an opportunity to take time away from the busy-ness of work and study and be present to one another and to others. There's a lot of different reasons to travel. Many young people embark on a gap year. There are thousands of travel blogs and Instagram accounts detailing people's travels. It's common for people to travel to find themselves. For Adam, it's not about finding himself, or fitting it in while he's young or before he has kids. He speaks about being present in the moment and in the world. He talks about experiencing life through the eyes of other cultures and people. And he talks about service, giving of his time and gifts to others. Have you ever thought how odd the concept of "finding yourself" overseas is? If you can't find yourself at home, how are you going to find yourself overseas? Definitely, through the experience of travelling, you might learn a different side of yourself, or it might shape you in different ways. Yet, you are who you are wherever you are. This doesn't mean that travel is meaningless. As Adam shared, there is incredible meaning in being present, in learning from others and in seeking ways to serve. What are the two things that would make this trip successful, rewarding and fulfilling for Adam? 1. Being able to push outside of his comfort zone and to interact and learn from other people and other cultures. 2. Being able to slow down life in order to focus back on his core values. Sure, those are things that Adam could do at home, but as he points out, it's about your intention. What's your intention about doing things? With travel, you can just make it about finding yourself, or you could make it about making the most of the different people and places you encounter. As Adam candidly shares, this wasn't an easy thing to plan. He experienced a lot of fear and nervousness about quitting his job and sacrificing other things to make their trip a reality. But as he points out: "anything in life where we want to have that growth, where we want to push ourselves in new space of doing life even better, there needs to be those experiences where we push ourselves and we're out of our comfort zones." What are the three things Adam wants to have as his daily focus while he's away: 1. Putting people ahead of tasks. 2. Being more grateful. 3. Pushing out of his comfort zone more. Challenge of the week: you don't have to go overseas to find yourself, you create yourself right here and right now. What are the three things you can focus on each day of this week? Silas Valentine teaches a very unique perspective that is full of revelation of what happened to Adam in Eden as Eve was created out of him. Adam began being self-conscious instead of remaining God-conscious. This being, Adam, was in perfect union with God yet fell into the believe that there had to be something more. As Adam's self-consciousness increased, toil and misery followed. Eve was even taken out to prove that the fullness was always within. As the Scriptures echo today, the Fullness of the Godhead is within you (Col. 2:9-10). Don't make the same mistake Adam made in the Garden of Pleasure and begin looking outside of yourself for what can only be found within. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- More in-depth teachings available at http://www.ekstasisculture.org If this teaching has blessed you and you would like to team up with us and partner or donate, check out http://www.ekstasisculture.org/donate.html ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Many have heard the Proverbs scripture "Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall." Pride befalls Christians as well distorting the truth of God. As Adam and Eve were told false truth by the serpent and partake of the fruit, so do we Christians tend to distort the truth. Today we cover the topic of pride and how we can correctly observe the truth of God.

Lately, I’ve fielded a lot of questions about how estate planning can help protect one’s family, so today, I’ve invited Adam Shiells from Shiells and Hammer to help me explain. As Adam says, “protecting your assets is protecting your family.” We don’t normally think of it that way, but it really makes sense when you think of a word like your “legacy.” You raise your kids and protect them so they can become productive adults, and you also acquire and protect your assets. Those two come together when you pass in the hope that the next generation can do a little bit better, and it continues on that upward path for many generations to come. A good estate plan is part of that process by ensuring that your assets make it to your successive generations. Think of it like this: When your kids are young, you’ll ask someone to care for your children should anything happen to you. Nobody ever puts that in writing, though. With Adam, estate planning includes guardianship designation. Another thing to think about is that it’s hard to know if kids will be responsible enough at age 18 to manage everything you’ve acquired in your life. Estate planning with Adam often also includes a ‘continuing trust,’ which lasts well beyond age 18 for them. You can name somebody who is older and more experienced with finances to manage the wealth on their behalf and make payments for things like health needs, school, or real estate, to name a few. All those expenses can be handled from the trust, but the kid won’t be able to put their hands directly on the money until they reach an age you’re comfortable with it. Now, these are just two examples of how estate planning can help you protect your family and your legacy. If you’d like to learn more about estate planning, you can reach Adam at 916.917.5914 or email him at ashiells@shiellsandhammer.com. As always, don’t hesitate to give me a call or send me an email with any other questions about buying a home, selling a home, or securing financing. I’m always here to help.

That’s right, it’s me, Marc Hershon. Your host and all-electric vehicle for Epi138 of Succotash, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast. NOTE: If you haven’t been here the past couple of episodes, we’ve started a campaign to change the generic use of the word “podcast” to “soundcast”. (I realize that this gets a little sticky for those shows that pretty much officially have “podcast” in the name. The word is part of our logo design here on Succotash and for the past 5+ years, we’ve been THE Comedy Podcast Podcast. But the name is anchoring the medium to a single device – the iPod from Apple – so I want to throw it back wide open with the new designation soundcast. Our announcer Bill Heywatt is supposed to be cutting new intros and outros for the show to reflect the name change, but our engineer/producer Joe Paulino has had a computer meltdown at Studio P. So until he gets things back up and rolling we’re stuck with the old P-word in the open and close to the show. And also have to get around to changing the logo, as seen here. No one said this soundcast biz was going to be easy. Or did they? I can’t remember… First of all BIG news! BIG BIG News, in a way – it really isn’t going to change anything as far as I know, but Succotash is now available for your listening pleasure through the I Heart Radio chain, network, thing. It hasn’t required us to do much, as far as I can tell but we are on there! Potentially MILLIONS of new listeners can now avoid us. Just go to IHeartRadio.com and search for Succotash OR click this link! LIVE APPEARANCES! I’ve got a couple of live appearances coming up. If you’re in the San Francisco Bay Area, I’m going to be part of the 40th year reunion show of Spaghetti Jam, which was a really popular improvisational comedy show in San Francisco starting back in the 1970s. We’re gettign as many of the people that we can find that can still move most of their limbs to show up for this. It’s on Sunday, September 11th – that’s right, 9-11, best date for a comedy show ever, at the Throckmorton Theatre in Mill Valley. You can go to http://142ThrockmortonTheatre.org for tickets and information. And then later in the month – September 23-25 – I’ll be at the 5th Annual Los Angeles Podcast Festival. I’m hosting the Journalism and Podcasting panel on Sunday afternoon at 2 PM, but the rest of the time, I’ll be set up in the Podcast Lab with my equipment doing interviews so stop on by and let’s chat! Back to business. This is another installment of Succotash Clips, and it’s chock full of tasty snippets of soundcasts and podcasts from all over the web. I clipped a couple, our associate producer Tyson Saner grabbed a few, and we also have some uploaded directly to us using our upload link: http://hightail.com/u/Succotash. In alphabetical order, we’ll be hearing from Dark Journey, Dazed & Convicted, Dino & Andy’s Skull Juice, Drinking In The Park,Lesser Known Somebodies, Proudly Resents, Spirits, Tao Of Comedy, and The 85th South Show. We also have a visit to the Podcast Graveyard to hold a clip seance with a soundcast from the great beyond. Plus a Burst O’ Durst from our friend, political comedian, and social commentator Will Durst. We also have a little ditty for our pal Abner Serd. Not to mention a Scrooge McDuck–style dip into the Tweetsack. This episode of Succotash Clips is brought to you by Henderson’s Pants. If you’re in the market for fictional pants that fit like a dream and don’t really exist, you should get yourself a pair of Henderson’s Pants. THE CLIPS! Dino And Andy’s Skull JuiceLet’s start out with a clip from a brand new soundcast, one that reviewed last week for Splitsider.com. It’s got the great title of Dino And Andy’s Skull Juice, and features Dino Stamatopolous, a guy who’s written on SNL, created Adult Swim’s Moral Orel, wrote and appeared on Community, and has written a whole bunch of funny stuff besides. Andy Dick is, well, Andy Dick. He’s been a standup comedian, sketch and improv player, as well as having appeared in films and television. These guys were pals for 25 years, although, as Dino points out in episode #1, he didn’t talk to Andy for 10 years. (Our esteemed Associate Producer Tyson Saner snagged this clip from their kickoff episode, which picks up right from their opening theme song.) Lesser Known SomebodiesFriend-of-the-Succotash Abner Serd sent along a link to a comedy podcast he found out of South Africa. It’s called Lesser Known Somebodies, hosted by Johannesberg-based comedian Simmi Areff, and the latest installment features fellow local comic Alfred Adriaan. Took me a few minutes to get into the rhythm of the accent but then these guys unspool a kind of fascinating glimpse inside the current comedy scene in and around Johannesberg. (I got such a kick out of listening to Lesser Known Somebodies that I reviewed it in last week’s Huffington Post.) Proudly Resents We got a clip sent over by Adam Spiegelman, he of the Proudly Resents podcast. (He was complaining that there was no upload button on our Succotash homesite, which is true. I am working to remedy that. But you can always just got to http://hightail.com/u/Succotash and then upload a 3-5 minute MP3 clip.) He recently had Conan writer Todd Levin on to help him dismantle Ninja 3: The Domination. At one point Todd talks about the only time Conan O’Brien ever got sued. As Adam tells it, “It involves a one-hit wonder, an 80’s film, and Tim Tebo.” Dazed & Convicted: CraigslostWe got a clip uploaded to us from the delightful Monica Hamburg, host of the Dazed & Convicted soundcast. Lately, it’s been subtitled as Dazed & Convicted: Craigslost. And why, you might ask? Monica likes combing the seedier side of Craigslist and presents, literally, the pick of the litter. Litter being the operative word… The 85 South ShowTyson clipped us a taste of The 85 South Show, which is billed as “a podcast for people who don’t know what a podcast is." It’s hosted by DC Young Fly and Karlous Miller. This clip we have is from an episode done in the wake of police-involved shootings, the killing of Alton Sterling and Philando Castille, with the hosts and their guest, Last Comic Standing champ Clayton English, discussing solutions to stop the violence, and the role that comedy plays in the social dialog. #blacklivesmatter Spirits Okay, I don’t know how many times I have said on this show that we prefer to play clips rather than promos. Clips make for better, real-er sample of the show. And I can talk about ‘em. When we had Hal Lublin and Mark Gagliardi on earlier this year, they even made a definitive We Got This ruling that clips are better than promos. But some people don’t get it, and that’s fine. We support all soundcasts and so it is that spirit that I present this 30-second promo of Spirits without additional commentary… Drinking In The ParkJust the opposite of the challenge of Spirits is what I’ve got going on with a show called Drinking In The Park. The hosts are Neil and Johnny, per their direct upload to Succotash, with no last names. But they sent me the whole episode Issue 10, Live At Toronto Comicon. Not a clip, but almost 10 minutes of chat and music stuff. Still better than a promo! I sliced out a few minutes of them talking to some joker who calls himself That Joker Guy. Doctor Who: Dark JourneyThis is a clip from a show called Doctor Who: Dark Journey. I don’t think it’s officially affiliated with the British TV series Dr. Who at all. In fact, I know it isn’t, because here’s the note that came with clip: “The attached file is a clip from AM Audio Media's main audio drama Doctor Who: Dark Journey. Dark Journey is an unofficial fan made audio drama featuring professional actors, writers, sound designers and composers. Our theme tune is by the UK prog rock group 'Traffic Experiment'. Dark Odyssey is a bit of a wink and nod self parody of it and all things fan made.” The Tao of ComedyThis podcast has a pretty grim origin story. The host, Kelly Maclean, had been at last year’s Just For Laughs festival in Canada, where she interviewed a number of comedians. Four months later, her brother Andrew was killed in a car accident. The conversations she had in Montreal were the things that brought her back from crushing depression and so she’s launched the podcast in order to continue that kind of deep interchange with funny people. In this clip from Epi10, she’s talking to Brad Williams, standup and co-host of the About Last Night soundcast. Podcast GraveyardIn the 5 years that I’ve been running Succotash, comedy writer Caleb Bacon has had two very listenable soundcasts. The first was called The Gentleman’s Club which took a podcast dirtnap at the end of 2012. A few months later, Caleb was back with more of an instructional soundcast called Man School, in which he talked to guys from various walks off life, although most were somehow connected to show business, and he’d get their story about some deep subject matter. A little over a year ago, in June of 2015, the last known class of Man School was in session. The clip we're featuring is from a few epis before that one, #83, with Caleb and his guest comic, writer and fellow podcaster Mick Betancourt (The Mick Betancourt Show), talking about life as a sober alcoholic. Country Fair SongThe latest ditty from our friend Abner Serd celebrates the "season" of county fairs. Special thanks to Abner for joining our "Soundcast Movement"! SUCCOTASH CAN USE YOUR HELP! Guitarist Adam Levy is probably best known for his work with Norah Jones. He played with her for years, wrote songs for her, and really transformed from an instrumentalist to a songwriter through his tenure in her band. But by the time he met Norah, he was already well into a career as a sideman and jazz player in San Francisco. Here he talks about his journey from coast to coast and back again, the process of becoming a songwriter, and how he developed his approach as a "content creator". We also explored what he calls the benefits of the tyrannical record producer, the challenges of writing about loss and pain, and the importance of finding joy in music. As Adam says it: "Don't sit around and wait for something to happen. Make something happen."
The Old Testament can seem like it's locked in time and not as applicable to our lives as the New Testament. As Adam and Eve struggle with temptation, they help us learn that there are healthy boundaries set to help us succeed. We learn about ourselves when we experience the repercussions that come from our actions and behaviors. Week 1 of 6 in the "Covenant: God's pursuit of us" worship series, recorded at Good Shepherd Platte County on May 29, 2016.
From The Bierkeller in Leeds, the boys grab a stein (or two) and have a whine. As Adam gets distracted by the jukebox, Sam tries to keep things on track with fecal-related talk. Other topics up for discussion are toothbrushes, subtitles and 'dickwigs'.
Another week against a winning team and another fourth quarter meltdown where the team is unable to hold a lead. As Adam says, "twice is a trend and three times is a you problem," we come to realize that we've never had to get to five before. What is five? We still don't know. We do know that there was reason to have confidence going into this game, but it's tough when your offense digs a first half hole thanks to penalties. We talk about other uncharacteristic moments that contributed to the loss and why this season has been so frustrating. Three good things came out of this game: Mr. T scored a touchdown, Doug Baldwin had a big game and red zone efficiency improved. The other good thing is the 49ers are the next team on the schedule. We talk about what the 49ers get by having Blaine Gabbert under center. We get to your emails, do better nods go to a player agent and a Seahawks fan who needs to know when it's okay to call a game. We’ve all encountered scripted customer greetings at one point or another in our lives. Are these greetings an effective strategy when crafting customer experience? The Benefits of Customer Greetings Customer greetings are the introduction to your business and a reminder of excellent service as a customer leaves. As we all know, first and last impressions are fantastic points of reference for customers when calling your business to mind. These greetings can offer consistency and identity for your brand. In addition, customer greetings add structure and guidance for your team, allowing them to understand your customer experience mission and how to interact with consumers in a way that supports rather than detracts from your company identity. The key to the effectiveness of a greeting lies in it’s purpose, context, and sincerity. As Adam points out, "put the customer ahead of the customer experience checklist." Want to learn the methodology of crafting customer greetings that support your brand promise and key into the exact type of customer your company caters to? “If I am the cause of my problem, I am also the solution.” After seeing him speak at a sober living facility, I knew That God had brought Adam Sud into my life for a higher purpose. Adam is a holistic lifestyle coach for recovering addicts where he teaches nutrition and wellness as methods of relapse prevention and today he will share with us his journey of recovery and his path to holistic health and healing. When Adam checked in to a recovery facility, he was a three-hundred pound, amphetamine addicted Type-2 diabetic. Although he had a happy childhood in Houston, Texas, he felt pressure from his family to live a healthy lifestyle. But sometimes, as children, when we hear that Oreos are bad for us what we really internalize is that we are bad for wanting that food in the first place. Adam developed self-image issues resulting in a junk food and drug dependency.“The best medicine is always what’s on your fork.” Adam SudCLICK TO TWEETWithin just six months of checking in to a recovery facility, Adam reversed his diabetes, got down to one hundred and seventy pounds, and is now celebrating two and half years sober. As Adam changed his lifestyle, he began to recognize his self-worth and has now started to shine his light of awareness and wellness onto others.I really identify with Adam’s story as I’ve seen with my own eyes the way that recovering drug addicts can transfer from one addiction to another. Food is an addiction. Feed your body what is clean, pure, and real and that will translate to your mind, body, and spirit. At the end of the day, your lifestyle habits do not reflect or define who you are as a person. With the right positive changes, you can allow your true self to shine through.“Movement matters.”LISTEN TO THE PODCAST WATCH THE PODCAST RESOURCESadasud@gmail.com512 731 0245

The word for "naked," used for Adam and Eve, and the word for "crafty," used for the serpent is, in the Hebrew, the same word! What could this linguistic tie tell us about our world and our humanity? As Adam and Eve's eyes were opened, perhaps our eyes will be opened as well as we study, realizing that we too are crafty and cunning. This message includes a live Q&A section at the end.
As Adam continues his talk to the Renewable Energy Team within, the subject of money, as regards our perceptions, pursuits came up, and the price we pay when the pursuit of “gold” becomes more important than the call and guidance of the human Soul. Cunningham's Law ( https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Cunningham%27s_Law ) states: > > The best way to get the right answer on the internet is not to ask a > question; it's to post the wrong answer. The crew recently experienced a bit of this law first hand in response to their episode on Testing ( https://workingcode.dev/episodes/009-testing/ ). Adam Cameron ( http://blog.adamcameron.me/ ) - friend of the show and long-time friend of the hosts - posted a scathing (but loving) rebuttal ( http://blog.adamcameron.me/2021/02/thoughts-on-working-code-podcasts.html ) of basically everything that Ben said in episode 009. This week, the crew meets to discuss Adam's post; and, to dig more deeply into how testing gets applied in real world scenarios. Thew crew also attempt to pick apart the relationship between DevOps and engineering - a question posed by @LD2 ( https://twitter.com/LD2/status/1357493535088332801 ). Just don't ask us (or anyone) to define what exactly DevOps is; you ask 10 different people and you'll get 15 different answers. Oh, and Adam totally built a website for the show ( https://workingcode.dev/ ) ! So, heck yeah! It's built on Eleventy ( https://www.11ty.dev/ ) and is generated based on Markdown files. *Triumphs & Failures* * Adam's Triumph / Failure - His application had a Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability that was exploited. Which is definitely unfortunate. However, he was able to take a bad situation and turn it into an opportunity to practice transparency, clear communication, and a sense of urgency with his customers. In fact, in the end, he was commended by his customers for how well he handled the situation. * Ben's Triumph - He attached some analytics to a user interface (UI) within his application and suddenly a part of the application which has historically been a blackbox was transformed into a rich, emotional experience in which he could "see" users actually consuming the tools that he built. This recent adoption of analytics (into his workflow) has forever changed the way that he will think about what is and is not an important part of the application that he's building. It's amazing how powerful "user empathy" can be to an engineer's motivation. * Carol's Triumph - Her company is over-committed in terms of the work that they have on their schedule. But, instead of making the engineers freak-out over this planning problem, her managers are doing their job right and are protecting their reports from the organizational chaos. It's rare to see managers that understand how to manage both up and down within a company hierarchy! As Adam says in the episode, a good manager is worth their weight in gold. * Tim's Triumph - His frustration over debugging an issue in Redis had grown to the point where he was walking around his house angry. But, instead of trying to "just muscling through it" , he decided to step back, be kind to himself, and take a break. > > ASIDE: You won't know this from the current recording but this break gave > him the opportunity to rethink the problem and ultimately come back and > figure out what was going wrong. Such is the magic of mental rest and > relaxation! *Notes & Links* * OWASP: XSS ( https://owasp.org/www-community/attacks/xss/ ) - consistently on the Top 10 vulnerabilities outlined by the Open Web Application Security Project (OWASP). * Data Breach Response Plan - an organizational play that outlines how a company responds to data breaches, how quickly they have to notify users, and what immediate and longer-term steps they have to take to mitigate such breaches in the future. * Shattered Glass ( https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0323944 ) - a movie in which Hank Azaria's character demonstrates excellent managerial skills. * Segment ( https://segment.com/ ) - a popular data pipeline and aggregation platform. * Amplitude ( https://amplitude.com/ ) - a popular analytics platform for digital teams. * Eleventy ( https://www.11ty.dev/ ) - a simpler static site generator. * Adam Cameron: Thoughts on Working Code podcast's Testing episode ( http://blog.adamcameron.me/2021/02/thoughts-on-working-code-podcasts.html ) - the rebuttal that we discuss on the show. * Cunningham's Law ( https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Cunningham%27s_Law ) - states, "the best way to get the right answer on the internet is not to ask a question; it's to post the wrong answer." * Test-Driven Development ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Test-driven_development ) - a test-first methodology for software application development. * Singleton Pattern ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singleton_pattern ) - a software design pattern that restricts the instantiation of a class to one "single" instance. * Cory Haines ( https://articles.coreyhaines.com/ ) - a well known programmer in the Ruby and testing worlds. * Ben Nadel: Singleton vs. Single Instance And A Decade Of Unnecessary Guilt ( https://www.bennadel.com/blog/3380-singleton-vs-single-instance-and-a-decade-of-unnecessary-guilt.htm ) - the realization that everything he thought about the "Singleton Pattern" was wrong. * DevOps - who the heck knows what it actually is - platform things mostly? Code++? A mindset? A job title? Follow the show!
