Keen On Democracy
Episode 2485: Paul Rice on why Tariffs are dumb

Keen On Democracy

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 2, 2025 40:26

It might be Liberation Day today, but according to Paul Rice, founder of US Fair Trade and author of Every Purchase Matters, Trump's tariffs are dumb. Rice firmly distances Fair Trade from Trump's controversial trade policies, calling them "backward" and "bad for American business." He explains how Fair Trade - which has expanded beyond coffee to include 40 products, from produce to furniture - certifies products through rigorous standards ensuring workers receive fair wages and environmental protections. Every purchase does indeed matter. And, in contrast with Trump's short sighted tariffs, Rice's Fair Trade movement is worth celebrating today. Five Key Takeaways * Fair Trade is fundamentally different from Trump's tariff policies - Rice strongly distinguishes between Trump's "big stick diplomacy" approach to trade and Fair Trade's focus on equitable market transactions that benefit workers and the environment.* Fair Trade certification involves rigorous standards - Products earn certification through a 200-point checklist covering social, labor, and environmental criteria, with independent annual audits ensuring compliance.* Sustainable products don't necessarily cost more - Rice challenges the "fallacy" that ethical products must be more expensive, citing companies like NatureSuite that have adopted Fair Trade standards without raising consumer prices.* The Fair Trade movement is expanding rapidly - What began with coffee has grown to encompass approximately 40 product categories including tea, produce, apparel, furniture, and even cosmetics, with fresh produce being the fastest-growing segment (32% growth last year).* Ethical consumption is a form of everyday activism - Rice promotes the idea that Every Purchase Matters, suggesting consumers can "vote for change" through their purchasing decisions rather than waiting for political elections.Keen On America is a reader-supported publication. Raised with a deep sense of compassion for the poor, Paul has spent 40 years fighting poverty and environmental destruction. The quintessential social entrepreneur, this passion led him to develop innovative models that harness the power of consumers and business to improve people's lives and protect the planet. Paul launched Fair Trade USA (formerly known as TransFair USA) in late 1998 in a one-room warehouse in downtown Oakland, California. Under his leadership, Fair Trade USA became the leading certifier of Fair Trade products in North America, enlisting the support of over 1,700 major brands and retailers who sell everything from coffee and chocolate to apparel and seafood. By 2024, the organization and its partners had generated over $1.2 billion in cumulative financial impact for over 1 million farmers, workers and their families in 70 countries worldwide. Before founding Fair Trade USA, Paul worked with family farmers for 11 years in the highlands of Nicaragua, where he founded and led the country's first Fair Trade organic coffee export cooperative. This deep, firsthand experience with the transformative impact of Fair Trade in the lives of farmers and their communities ultimately inspired him to return to the United States with the dream of mainstreaming the movement in this country. Paul has been named Ethical Corporation's 2019 Business Leader of the Year and has been recognized four times as Social Capitalist of the Year by Fast Company magazine, which dubbed him a “rebel in the boardroom.” He is also a recipient of the prestigious Skoll Award for Social Entrepreneurship, the World Economic Forum's Social Entrepreneur of the Year, and the Ashoka Fellowship. He has spoken at the World Economic Forum, Clinton Global Initiative, Skoll World Forum, Conscious Capitalism CEO Summit, TEDx, Consumer Goods Forum, and numerous universities and conferences around the world. Paul is regarded as one of today's leading visionaries and practitioners for sustainable sourcing and conscious capitalism.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. Josh Lannon, Warriors Heart President and Founder and Co-Author of “The Social Capitalist”, had a vision to open a healing center for our warriors / protectors so they could heal with the peers only. After getting sober in 2001, Josh and his wife Lisa Lannon opened 6 healing centers to help others “get loved ones back”. In 2013, the Lannons joined forces with Former Special Forces Tom Spooner to open Warriors Heart in Bandera, Texas, outside San Antonio (Warriors Heart is the first and only private residential treatment center in the US for “warriors only” – military, veterans and first responders). With a bold vision to bring 1 million warriors home from addiction and PTSD, Warriors Heart is leading the way in chemical dependency treatment for our warriors. Josh is a leading Professor at the AKKI annual international seminars and teaches martial arts worldwide - and Brazilian Jujitsu is part of the Warriors Heart recovery program. Josh's work has been seen in Forbes, The Chicago Tribune, KSAT, KENS 5, FOX 10 Phoenix, ESPN Radio and more. https://www.warriorsheart.com/about-us/staff/#josh-lannon Josh Lannon TV Interview Warriors Heart Private Inpatient Healing Center KENS CBS  San Antonio, Texas https://youtu.be/pNdn5t7uG6s    AND https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fNH8lgBSO18 You can get Special Blend from Black Rifle Coffee Company here  Important Notes about Warriors Heart Foundation vs Warriors Heart as a reference: The Warriors Heart Foundation helps subsidize the cost of treatment for Warriors who do not have insurance benefits, including VA benefits. Most funding goes towards treatment services at the Warriors Heart Facility (a separate entity from the foundation), but also covers funding for other verified programs. With the unacceptable averages of 20 veteran suicides per day and 1 law enforcement officer every 62.5 hours in the U.S., the goal is not to turn anyone away for financial reasons. The Warriors Heart Foundation supports programs that give individuals and communities the tools to rebuild their lives and become self-sufficient. Donations help: Subsidize funding for chemical dependency and PTSD treatment that includes detox, in-patient residential treatment services, intensive outpatient program (IOP), one-on-one therapy and sober living. Fund ESA or Service Dogs for warriors that includes trained emotional support animals that provide a specific service to a warrior. Fund Sober Living housing for warriors who need continued support where there is structure after treatment while going back to school, volunteering and/or receiving outpatient treatment. Promote behavioral health education for veteran, law enforcement & firefighter resources for what to look for with chemical dependencies and PTSD. In-kind donations also support warrior healing, which may include donations of wood, building materials, steel, metal and wood shop equipment, volunteer work, products and other partnerships. Current foundation partnership programs include the Gary Sinise Foundation, Black Rifle Coffee Company, U.S. Elite Footwear and an MTM l Watch Limited Edition Series.  Warriors Heart Foundation (Bandera, Texas) Warriors Heart Foundation is a 501 (c)(3) that accepts donations to help heal our protectors with their peers. One of the missions of the foundation is to provide financial aid through hardship grants that assist in covering the cost of treatment at Warriors Heart to help our military, veterans and first responders get the treatment they have earned and deserve. https://www.warriorsheartfoundation.org Warriors Heart (Bandera, Texas near San Antonio): Warriors Heart is the first and only private accredited treatment program in the U.S. exclusively for “warriors” (active duty military, veterans, first responders and EMTs/paramedics) faced with the self-medicating struggles of alcohol addiction, prescription and drug addiction, PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder), mild TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury) and other co-occurring issues in a private, 60-bed facility on a 543-acre ranch. Along with a minimum 42-day peer-to-peer residential treatment program, Warriors Heart gives “warriors” the option of Detox, Day Treatment, Outpatient, and Sober Living (60-day minimum). Warriors Heart’s work has been featured on the TODAY Show, CBS Health Watch, FOX 11 Los Angeles, National Defense Radio Show and in TIME, Forbes, The Chicago Tribune, Addiction Pro magazine, San Antonio Business Journal and many more. Julie, a leadership trainer and development coach, is passionate about helping people lead with ease. She helps her clients learn the soft skills required for effective leadership like how to communicate more effectively in professional situations. Julie started her career at Harvard University in their Capital Gifts Fundraising group. This allowed her to meet many impressive (yet down to earth) people and understand more about how they function and engage. While working at Harvard Business School on an initiative examining women in the workforce, Julie studied women in leadership roles and began to understand that a lack of confidence and skill as well as an inability to influence those around them is what held women back professionally. Later, Julie began working at Boston College in the Center for Corporate Citizenship and was focused on understanding employee retainment and engagement. At a pivotal moment in her career, Julie felt like she could be doing more and feel more passionate about her work. She examined what it was that she truly loved doing on a daily basis and realized that she loved the conversations she was having with driven professionals while helping them overcome the challenges they faced in becoming a strong leader. Six weeks after this realization, Julie started a coaching certification program and her own company was launched! Understanding what makes us feel alive is key in being where you are supposed to be in life. People often want to stay in places in their careers where they are comfortable even if it may not be the best fit for them. Julie is passionate about helping people think through how to create professional opportunities that fuel them. Julie encourages us to always ask questions about those around you; this is essential in creating a deeper connection and building Social Capital. When we give people the opportunity to speak about themselves, it creates a bond through their positive engagement with you. When teaching leadership, many just want to do what they already know to do, or want someone to do the work for them. Julie teaches her clients to use simple, yet not simplistic, tools which help them overcome challenges. Julie shares why she believes Emotional Intelligence, empathy and self-awareness are essential in successful leadership. When people understand themselves and one another, they are able to work together much more effectively. Building on the golden rule, Julie utilizes what she calls the Titanium Rule: Speak to others the way they want and need to be spoken to. Help them hear what you are saying in a way they can receive and understand it. Be confident that as you help those around you, and your network will be there to help you achieve your goals. He went to college at Coastal Carolina University and while there he found an internship at a country club/golf course in Colorado. He became a Class A, Golf Pro while going to college and graduated with a marketing degree. Thanks to an introduction by mutual friends, he moved to Colorado and began working at Cherry Hills Country Club in 2005, where he worked for six years as a golf pro. Matt believes that the quality of your relationships determines the quality of your life and that creating positive memorable experiences for those you encounter will change how you engage with the people around you. As this became more clear to him, he realized he needed to make a career change. Matt left the golf industry to enter Wealth Management with Northwestern Mutual where developing strong, genuine relationships built on trust is his focus. Matt’s philosophy to develop social capital is built on being serendipitous towards encounters with people, being curious about others and being a servant leader. He looks for opportunities to add value to those around him; anticipating their needs and ways to provide solutions and help them. Matt believes showing appreciation is the most underutilized tool for building social capital out there. You get the best out of people when they feel good about you - simple exercises of showing appreciation yield 10x returns. Matt is passionate about social capital and believes that next to our health, social capital is the most important thing that you have. He shares scientific research that shows that our social relationships dictate our health. Integrity is a key ingredient of cultivating social capital and building a strong reputation. He urges us to be cautious connecting to closely with those who lack integrity. Power Partners are an important piece of building social capital through creating an ecosystem of people who share your mindset and values and will represent you well as the network continues to grow - be willing to invest in them first! Ep. 78: Paul Rice – founder, President & CEO of Fair Trade, USA. – ft. co-host Jennifer Hashley, founder of New Market Farming project  || What about the folks producing our food? Tune in to episode 78 to hear from Paul Rice, founder, President & CEO of Fair Trade USA, the social enterprise and leading certifier of Fair Trade products in North America. On a mission to impact social and environmental good, Fair Trade USA celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2018. Since its launch, Fair Trade USA and its partners have generated almost $500 million in additional income for farmers and workers in more than 70 countries worldwide, allowing them to keep their kids in school, care for the land and steadily improve their livelihoods. Fair Trade USA sets standards that farms, fisheries and factories must be audited against in order to be called Fair Trade Certified. With a beginning in coffee, the organization now certifies over thirty commodities. A timely conversation as the global coffee market price is at a ten year low, Paul shares what Fair Trade is continuing to do to improve farmer livelihoods and enact long term sustainable development. He’ll talk about what Fair Trade for all means to him and the organization and the power of collective bargaining. The Fair Trade USA seafood program just celebrated it’s 5th anniversary and he will share how it came to be and the importance of contributing to the seafood sustainability space. Lastly will check in on the vision for the future and how Fair Trade aligns with the conscious consumer of today. BIO: He launched the award-winning nonprofit organization in 1998 after spending 11 years organizing farmers in the highlands of Nicaragua. There he founded and led the country’s first Fair Trade coffee export cooperative, which introduced him to the transformative power of market-based approaches to sustainable development. Paul Rice then returned to the United States to obtain his MBA from Berkeley Haas with the dream of bringing Fair Trade to consumers, businesses and farmers worldwide.   PAUL RICE –  ep. 78:  FAIR TRADE FOR ALL People called him crazy in the beginning, but Paul had a bold vision for Fair Trade: from his years in Nicaragua, he knew that farmers and workers could learn to navigate the global market and empower themselves on a journey out of poverty. He believed that business could become a major force for social and environmental change, creating “shared value” and sustainability with profitability. He envisioned a consumer awakening and recognition that everyday purchases can impact the world for the better. In short, Paul believed deeply that the Fair Trade movement would have a major impact on the world and also help propel a much larger, lasting shift toward Conscious Capitalism.   Twenty years later, Fair Trade has grown into a widely-known and increasingly mainstream consumer trend that is rapidly approaching an inflection point. In 2016, consumer recognition of the Fair Trade Certified label reached 67% and U.S. retail sales of Fair Trade products grew to an estimated $6 billion.  Paul and his team have enlisted the support of over 1,300 companies, including market leaders like Green Mountain, Starbucks, Nespresso, General Mills, PepsiCo, Whole Foods, Costco, Target and Walmart. Fair Trade USA now certifies coffee, tea, cocoa, sugar, coconut, fresh fruits and vegetables. Most recently, through groundbreaking partnerships with Patagonia, West Elm and Gap Inc., Fair Trade has begun certifying apparel and home furnishings to improve working conditions and incomes for factory workers.   Paul’s rich, first-hand experience over the last 30 years in the areas of sustainable agriculture, grassroots economic development, global supply chain transparency and consumer activation is unique in the certification world. He is now a leading advocate of “impact sourcing” as a core strategy for both poverty alleviation and sustainable business. Paul has been honored for his pioneering work by Ashoka, the Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship, Fast Company Magazine’s Social Capitalist of the Year award (four-time winner), Ethisphere’s 100 Most Influential in Business Ethics, Entrepreneur magazine’s Entrepreneur of the Year (2012 Finalist) and the Skoll Award for Social Entrepreneurship. The Texas-native holds an Economics and Political Science degree from Yale University and an MBA from the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley, where he is now an Executive Fellow. Paul has spoken at the World Economic Forum, Clinton Global Initiative, Skoll World Forum, TEDx and universities & conferences around the world. summary by:   Mel Bandler Retail Partnerships @ FairTrade USA   www.SourcingMatters.show

Josh Lannon is a driven social entrepreneur. He is committed to building businesses that focus on the development of people and creating positive change. Growing up, Josh apprenticed under his father's direction by operating the family owned nightclub in Las Vegas, Nevada. Josh's leadership and team led their Vegas nightclubs to be voted the #1 country club, 5 years in a row.  Yet the environment eventually took it's toll and Josh had to make a decision to change. Following his own rehabilitation, Josh and his wife Lisa, began the process of discovering their purpose, and building a business that would allow them to do what they were passionate about.  By using the power of their “why” they built Journey Healing Centers, a family of 6 adult drug and alcohol treatment centers, which was later acquired by Elements Behavior Health in 2013. Josh also wrote a book called "The Social Capitalist" describing some of the Rich Dad principles they used to build a business around the heart.  He speaks around the globe with the Rich Dad team on Social Entrepreneurism, behavioral change, and applying the Rich Dad principles. During this episode, Nicole and Josh explore his journey, along with valuable tips on becoming a social capitalist who is both wealthy and passionate about helping others.  Nicole and Josh also discuss his bold new vision called "Warriors Heart" designed to bring 1 million warriors home from addiction and PTSD.  You can learn more about social capitalism at http://www.thesocialcapitalistbook.com/story If you or someone you know is a veteran, police officer, fire fighter or first responder struggling with addition or depression, or you would like to learn more about "Warriors Heart", visit:  http://www.warriorsheart.com To learn how you can get involved, check out: http://www.mission22.com
