Uncle Matt's Organic - Our Goal: Be Consistently Great Tasting

The Story of a Brand

**This episode is brought to you by MuteSix, FenixCommerce, and EcoCart**   Few people understood the benefits of organic food, but that didn't deter Matt McLean from pursuing his dream of creating a top-selling organic orange juice brand. Matt is the founder and Chief Uncle at Uncle Matt's Organic, America's No. 1, selling organic orange juice. Matt grew up in the citrus industry in Florida, where the business was passed on from generation to generation. Determined to make his mark outside of citrus, he went to college to study business, and after graduating, he started an import-export business. But when he saw an opportunity for organic juice in the United States, he couldn't resist. So, Uncle Matt's Organic was founded in June 1999. For Matt, finding organic citrus juice in Florida to supply in bulk and manufacturing were the biggest challenges in the beginning. The brand has seen many ups and downs, from starting in the backyard to raising capital and getting sold. But the company was finally repurchased from bankruptcy. In part 1, Matt talks about: * Gratefulness for a business mentor who had the patience to guide him through the business's early days. * Overview of the brand. * Early days of Uncle Matt's. * Challenges in the beginning. * When things went sour with citrus. In this episode of The New CISO, Matt King comes on to focus on the leadership side of cyber security. Matt talks about how lifelong learners make for great leaders, and how he learned to not make assumptions about his team members when managing them.    Background  Matt King is currently the VP of Global IT Security, CISO at Belcan. He has been with the company since 2017. Before transitioning into cyber security, Matt’s career focused on IT. However, Matt worked to bridge the gap in communication between the two before transitioning into cyber security.    Becoming A Leader  This episode notes the gaps between managers that received leadership training and what Matt learned about management when he transitioned into a leadership role. Some managers choose to delegate and coach people in different ways. Matt notes that when delegating tasks to your team members, it shouldn’t just be based on their knowledge level. Instead, it should be based on the specific task you are asking them to do.    Analyzing Your Team  Matt reflects on a situation where he made an assumption based on someone’s skill level and completely delegated a task to them. The results weren’t the best. A tip for managers: make sure you fully understand not just their skill level, but what that person can handle for that particular task. Also reflect on what they need from a delegation perspective: do they need handholding, general guidance or can they fully run with it?    Up For The Challenge  How do you amp yourself up to take on the challenge of managing people? The simple answer: try to learn from everybody you meet. Switching into the application, focus on the overall goals when you’re talking strategy and then divide your work up into chunks when dealing with the tactical side of the job.    The New CISO  For Matt, it’s all about flexibility. He places an emphasis on being open minded and being willing to help others.    Links  Matt King - LinkedIn Exabeam Podcasts

Join the Reynolds family to see how they finished the Take Charge 10 challenge, how they feel about it, and what changes they plan to keep. Day 8 you don't drink caffeine 6 hours before bed. This, again, helps reduce caloric beverages in the afternoon & dinner, but it also helps improve your sleep. Good sleep helps bolster healthy living.  One way the Reynolds family was able to prepare for a gathering that normally might involve alcohol & food was they prepared the food and ensured it was healthy--but still tasty. They simply didn't drink alcohol for the gathering, and though it would have been nice they continued to feel good and it wasn't as big of a deal as they had expected.    One thing Matt identified was that gamifying things--working to achieve macros & calories & sticking with goals using MyFitnessPal--really helped motivate him to stay on track.  On day 9, you heed to balance your meals, so no all carbohydrate meals especially. For many, an all carbohydrate meal will lead to a big spike in insulin and they'll ultimately feel hangry soon thereafter and look for more food. Trying get a little bit of everything--fruit & nuts or cheese, for example--really helps.  For the Reynolds, this wasn't a hard day but a day to really solidify those habits they had already developed. For the final day, you have to know everything you're eating and not eat outside the home. The Reynolds family partook in some Cox wings & BBQ sauce--Cox Sauce, get you some--and really enjoyed it. Overall, everyone was feeling better and though there were certain things they looked forward to, they largely wanted to continue the habits and success they created with the challenge. They also didn't feel deprived, so they didn't go and have a 3000 calorie meal, like they might have after a typical "diet" in the past, but rather went out to a diner and eat reasonably but some foods that they hadn't had over the past 10 days.  Ultimately, this is about sustainable nutrition habits to achieve your health goals. If you follow a diet that you couldn't keep up with long-term, you need to think about why you're following that diet. While there are certain circumstances where this may make sense, most people can just follow the basics of nutrition, not feel so deprived, and reach their goals. For Rachel and their daughters, they mostly missed sugar. For Matt, he craved a bit more fat.  They're glad they did it, and glad they did it together. They felt more conscious, more intentional about food, but without neuroticism or morality.  Join us for the Take Charge 10 nutrition challenge. Matt & Niki talk to Niki and Gillian about the Take Charge 10 nutrition challenge, which begins as a community on March 22 but you can complete anytime you want after March 22. Take Charge 10 is a 10 day challenge, and each day adds another habit. Each day, therefore, builds on the other, so on day 10 you should be trying your hardest to follow all 10 guidelines. ANYONE can do it at ANYTIME, though if you begin on March 22, you'll be doing it along with the BLOC community and many coaches and staff. If you're participating, you can let us and your followers know by adding #takecharge10 to your social media posts.  It's a way to fast charge your nutrition and work on healthy nutrition habits with an online community and--hopefully--those close to you as well. It's a reset, where you spend 10 days spending more time and energy and focus on nutrition. It's a way to see how different habits and behavior changes affect your health and reflect on how you might incorporate or sustain some or all of these changes.  What is it NOT? It's not 10 days to 6 pack abs. It's not 10 days of extreme dieting or restricting huge types of food. It's not a 10-day suffer fest.  Below are the steps: Drink More Water (half your bodyweight in pounds in ounces of water) Reduce Added Sugars (50g max) Stop Mindless Snacking (eat purposely) Keep a Food Journal of Everything that Goes Into Your Mouth Eliminate Alcohol Consumption Eat Your Veggies (eat more, try more) Fill Up on Fiber (30g of fiber from food) Cut off Caffeine (6 hours before bed) Balance Your Snacks (don't eat a snack with just one macro, especially carbohydrates) Prepare all Meals at Home (know exactly what you eat) Gillian designed this nutrition challenge to be inclusive, not exclusive. It was also designed to be done to be something you can do with your family and friends. The 10 habits really form the foundation of any healthy nutrition approach - this doesn't require a specific diet and allows for many different types of diet. These really are the fundamentals and basics, and building this strong base can lead to a sustainable, healthy diet.  A strong foundation leads to success, though you can certainly improve on these areas and take them further, based on your goals. Some habits are definitely things that are worth doing all the time, and others you might decide to only do occasionally.  Many of the arguments and discussions on programming and nutrition too often focus on the least important aspects of diet. Most dietitians agree with most of these basics. Also, some of these you may already be doing or find extremely easy to do (if you don't drink, eliminating alcohol won't be a problem). Others may be a real challenge. If you're doing something well, you can always aim to push that area a bit further during a challenge. If you struggle with something, it's worth reflecting on why you struggle with it and how big of an impact changing that behavior could contribute to your health goals.  Food isn't moral, it's ultimately functional. Are you eating in a way to move toward your goals? If you enjoy a food like chocolate or ice cream, there are ways to allow these foods with planning and adjusting your diet in other areas.  The first day you add, not take away, something: you add water. This not only will help many people feel better, but it also helps--as a side effect--reduce caloric drinks.  Be weary, however, of "gateway foods." These are foods that tend to cause a chain or more calorically dense foods. For Matt, for example, he struggles to eat tortilla chips without adding things to them and then drinking as well.  Reducing added sugars helps you look at labels more closely, especially if you enjoy sweet foods regularly. You may find yourself finding ways to reduce added sugars during the day to enable a dessert in the evening, and that's completely fine! You will likely be surprised where sugar is hidden and in the amounts it is hidden.  Stop mindless snacking is a way to prevent intaking calories that you're not eating mindfully. Too often, someone might pick at a food while preparing dinner or eat left over food off of a kid's plate. You can eat a snack, but it should be a deliberate snack.  Keeping a food journal helps you track what you eat and can help you track total calories and macros. You can also include how you feel. You can see what you were eating when you felt good and what foods didn't make you feel good. You can also pre-load food into the App to see the calories and macros in those foods. So, for example, if you plan to go out with friends on Saturday evening, you can either look at the restaurant menu and pick some foods. You can also plan to have some lighter meals earlier in the day to offset the increase calories in the evening.  Eliminating alcohol for many people helps you better understand and evaluate your relationship for alcohol. For some people, this will be incredibly easy. For others, it may be the most challenging step. Alcohol, however, has a trifecta of issues: calories, inhibition limitation, and worse sleep.  Veggies are considered healthy by just about every diet, and they provide lots of vitamins and minerals, contain lots of water, and have plenty of fiber. If you already eat vegetables, maybe increase the amount or try some new vegetables.  If you struggle with vegetables, frozen vegetables are often more nutritious than fresh vegetables and can often be easily steamed in the microwave. Add some salt and maybe some spices--maybe a little fat depending on your goals and calories and macros--and eat some vegetables. You can also hide vegetables in recipes: add some spinach or onions or bell peppers to some ground beef.    Fiber helps fill you up and do some other things that you do regularly. Adding the vegetables will go a long way toward this goal. Chia seeds and legumes have lots of vegetables, so do vegetables and fruit. Aim for 30g for the remainder of the challenge. Cutting off caffeine 6 hours before bed provides a couple benefits. First, it reduces pop (or soda, or soda pop, or coke, or whatever you call it). It also helps improve sleep quality if you regularly consume caffeine in the evening or late afternoon.  Balancing your meals and snacks helps prevent a crash, especially after high carbohydrates snacks (and for some, high carbohydrate & protein with very little fat). You'll often feel hungry and grumpy soon after these all carbohydrate snacks, such as pretzels.  Finally, day 10, understand everything you consume and prepare all your food at home. If you can, use this as an opportunity to try a new meal. Maybe make it a family or couple activity. Either way, prepare your food at home so you know EXACTLY what's in it. Restaurant meals have hidden calories, often in the forms of fats and oils that they add to meals.  Good luck, and #takecharge10 GET STARTED with one-on-one online coaching FOR FREE! The Alliance, an association of the world’s top 120 elite swimmers, is ready to officially get down to business after 20 months of development. For Matt, a three-time Olympian, this journey has been far, far longer. The Olympic icon has been a pioneer in this effort going back to the 1980s when Olympians were not allowed to earn endorsement dollars until after they officially retired from competition. Matt fought the system ultimately winning the right to earn endorsement revenue as an active swimmer, but not until the twilight of his career. His efforts really benefited the stars who followed him, like Janet Evans, Michael Phelps and Caeleb Dressel. While the Alliance is not a union, it is an association of elite swimmers and a potentially powerful voice in negotiating improved economic conditions. A fried bologna sandwich, as delicious a comfort as it is, might seem like an unusual pick for a chef’s favorite food. For Matt, though, it was one of the first dishes he learned how to cook, and one which inspired him to eventually go on to culinary school. From the time he was a young boy and could barely reach the table, he was making biscuits with his grandmother and helping prepare meals for his family. “I love the science behind it,” he says ,and he can’t imagine himself doing any other job. Matt went to culinary school right after high school and has been working in the industry ever since. Matt shared his perspective on the impact COVID has had on restaurants, particularly at the start of the pandemic when the governor’s orders were rapidly changing and restaurants had to adapt quickly to stay in compliance. “One of the hardest days in my career was having to call everybody and tell them they didn’t have a job. You didn’t do anything, but you don’t have a job. It’s hard enough to do that for one person, but then you have to do it for fifty people.” We talked about the importance of eating and shopping local, and the value of empathy and kindness. After all, “It doesn’t cost you anything to say ‘thank you.’” Last year, Matt also lost his grandfather to the virus. We talked about how strange it was not to be able to gather and band together, even in grief, and discussed strategies for maintaining community despite distance. It’s hard to know where things are going, even in 2021. “I don’t think the restaurant industry will ever be the same.” We remain hopeful that the vaccine’s reach will be enough to slow the spread of COVID-19. For Matt (and previous podcast guest, Jordan) this year will bring a wedding! But for now, we’ll continue to support the local business we know and love, letting empathy be our guide in all matters. Every now and again, you just have to have a dance party in your living room. That’s just some of the happiness advice Matt Howard shares in today’s episode of Lift U Up: Inspiring Health Stories. For Matt, music is always essential. Currently working as the Principal Percussionist with the https://www.laphil.com/musicdb/artists/2491/matthew-howard (LA Philharmonic), Matt shares his story on how his path led him to his https://www.nws.edu/news/first-year-percussion-fellow-lands-dream-job-with-la-philharmonic/ (dream job) so quickly. Even during a pandemic when he can’t perform live, Matt still finds a way to bring music into his life – and the lives of others.   Matt still pinches himself when he is reminded that he is living his dream playing music for a living. Growing up, Matt recalls that there was always music playing around the house. From oldies to modern rock, he found himself drawn to the artists his parents would play. When they saw he caught the music bug, they helped him pursue his passion. Matt learned how to play the drums and other percussion instruments and attended a high school music program.    As a senior in high school, Matt didn’t think that he wanted to have music as his life-long profession. But when an accident left him temporarily unable to play - he knew he had to do something after graduation. Time attending community college, led Matt back to becoming obsessed with percussion.  “If you want to get good at something, you have to obsess over it,” says Matt.    Today, Matt lives out his days continuing to find happiness in music. What does seven years of suffering reveal to a man about life and what matters most?  This episode is a firsthand report from the front lines of intense suffering. My guest, Matt Wilks, invites us into some of the darkest moments--including his own dark night of the soul--the triumphant moments, and much more in between.  Matt’s story is, of course, uniquely his. In a way, though, his story is also OUR story--the story of humans sharing the same "blue marble" of a planet for a brief span of time in the vast timeline of humanity--with all its painful lows and thrilling highs. And in Matt’s modern-day story, we find ancient wisdom for living our most fulfilling and meaningful lives as humans on planet earth.    Introducing Matt Wilks   Matt Wilks is a physical therapist by trade who today serves as VP and Chief Rehabilitation Officer for Sheltering Arms Institute --a cutting edge inpatient rehabilitation hospital in Richmond, VA. Matt and I met in college many moons ago, and we’ve reconnected in the past several years through a mutual friend. His wife, Amy Caroline, and their three kids live in the Richmond, VA area. And he is one high quality human being, in my book! Tune into the full episode to get to know Matt better; I think you’ll agree that he’s one high-quality human being.    A Staggering Timeline of Suffering  The Wilks’ family’s timeline of suffering began seven years ago, when Matt’s wife, Amy Caroline was diagnosed with melanoma. Then, his son, Hayes, was diagnosed with bone cancer and began a fierce fight for his life. Next, Matt began experiencing debilitating physical and neurological symptoms. His body was shutting down, and the possibility of ALS hung in the air. Then, almost unbelievably, Amy Caroline had another bout with melanoma, surgery to remove a benign thyroid tumor, and was diagnosed with breast cancer. Then, Matt’s dad (70) and one of Amy Caroline’s closest family members (54) received alzheimer’s diagnoses.  Let that sink in.  I still can’t quite wrap my brain around it. I do know, though, that this unfathomable degree of suffering brings (in my mind, at least) an immense amount of credibility to all of the lessons for living that Matt shares in this episode.   Tune in to the full episode to hear Matt fill in the finer brush strokes that bring that timeline to life in human terms.    Connecting Some Dots of Love and Mercy In the course of recounting Hayes’ cancer battle--which Matt identifies as the central struggle for his family during the past seven years--Matt reminded me that he, Amy Caroline, and Hayes crossed paths with my sister and brother-in-law in the very earliest days of Hayes’ cancer battle and in the midst of my brother-in-law’s own cancer battle. Holly and Brian visited with Matt, Amy Caroline, and Hayes in NYC closely following one of Brian’s major cancer-removal and orthopedic reconstructive surgeries. The comfort and encouragement that Holly and Brian shared were so deeply meaningful for Matt and his family in that moment and helped them know that they weren’t alone.  Matt shares that this experience of receiving comfort from others who were suffering was repeated many times over in the course of Hayes’ cancer battle.  My brother-in-law’s cancer battle had a HUGE impact on my life, too. In fact, this podcast is a direct result of how his struggle shaped me. Tune in to episode 001, You’re Dying: How to Make the Most of It for the rest of that story.    There’s Love Beneath the Waves One of the most moving parts of this episode for me is Matt’s description of one of the darkest moments he experienced during Hayes’ cancer battle. He calls the experience his own “dark night of the soul”--lying in bed in the middle of the night, alone with his fears that Hayes’ cancer had come back. And in those hours, Matt searched for something--anything--that was solid and he could cling onto. He found nothing, and eventually all he could do was lie there and breathe--and “that, only barely,” he recounts. Then, he began to be aware of a presence with him, steady and unwavering, and enabling him to keep drawing breath. He found “Love beneath the waves.”  The discovery of this “Love beneath the waves” has given Matt the ability to live and love with greater guts, gusto, and abandon than ever before--no matter how choppy and storm-tossed the seas are on the surface.   The Beauty of Simple Moments In the midst of all the suffering, Matt has developed the habit of lying in his hammock in a certain spot in his yard, with a good book and a favorite cocktail as his companions, the breeze on his face, and the dappled sunlight filtering through the tree above him. The suffering, Matt says, has helped him to truly relish life’s good things, life’s sweet moments. In a way, even as the suffering has deepened Matt’s spiritual experience of life, it has also paradoxically amplified his appreciation for the material world.    Ancient Wisdom  This juxtaposition of the spiritual and the material in his own experience has made the book of Ecclesiastes one of Matt’s favorite sources for wisdom. He recognizes in its ancient lines the lessons he’s learned in his modern-day story of suffering.    Other Takeaways from Matt’s Story Who am I, and whose am I? For Matt, the answers to these questions determine if we have a “rich” life or a “poor” life much more than our own interpretation of “rich” and “poor.” Receive each moment as it comes to you and for what it is--no less and no more. Don’t cling to the moments or demand that good moments last forever.  Our individual stories are hid within a much larger and longer story. Our suffering connects us with the billions of humans that have suffered before us.  These are some of the nuggets of ancient wisdom that bubble up for me from this modern-day tale. Tune in to the full episode to see what bubbles up for you.    All is Well I’m glad to report that Amy Caroline, Matt, and Hayes are all doing much better these days. Amy Caroline’s breast cancer treatment has gone well. Matt’s symptoms have dramatically improved. And Hayes has almost reached the 5-year mark since beginning treatment, a major milestone related to his longer-term outlook.    What About You? If you’re above ground and breathing, you’ve already suffered in one way or another. Maybe you’re suffering right now. You are not alone. If you’re not suffering in a particular way right now, let me be the bearer of difficult news: Suffering will come again in one form or another, sooner or later. And then there’s Death--and as Coroner Rob Ryg reminded us in episode 018, it never comes when we’re expecting it. Life isn’t all suffering and death, but as Matt mentioned in this episode, our Western “developed” cultures don’t equip us to suffer or related to Death very well. Which is one reason why here on Andrew Petty is Dying, we intentionally embrace our Mortality to find motivation to become the people we were made to be and live the lives we were made to live.  If you’re suffering now, how can Matt’s story help you persevere in your suffering and find the love beneath the waves? If you’re not suffering right now, how can Matt’s story motivate you to live with more guts, gusto, and abandon now?  Let’s add a little more heat: If you knew with 100% certainty that you would die 5 years from today, what would you start doing differently today? Whatever it is, DO. THAT. THING.    A Powerful Partnership for Your Journey My purpose as a coach is to help you live the life you know you were made to live. For Matt and his family, the struggles of mental health have been part of every day life for as long as they can remember. Matt was able to find escape playing baseball but his brother wasn’t as fortunate. Matt delves into his and his brother’s experience in and out of mental hospitals, and the faults they witnessed in the mental health system first hand. “All human beings are wired differently, what works for you might not work for me. Mental health has been misunderstood for so long. We want to be the voice of change. To educate, inform, and eventually end the stigma. No matter what you’re going through, just know you’re not alone. We’ll always have your back. Obsessions are unwanted, intrusive thoughts, images, or urges that trigger intensely distressing feelings. Compulsions are behaviors an individual engages in to attempt to get rid of the obsessions and/or decrease his or her distress. Many people with OCD know or suspect their obsessions are not true, but they still have a hard time keeping their focus off the obsessions or stopping the compulsive actions. A diagnosis of OCD requires the presence of obsession and/or compulsions that are time-consuming (more than one hour a day), cause major distress, and impair work, social or other important function. About 1.2 percent of Americans have OCD and among adults slightly more women than man are affected. OCD often begins in childhood, adolescence or early adulthood; the average age symptoms appear is 19 years old.In this show, Matt credits Ali, OCD Recovery Coach, for saving his life at a moment when he was on the verge of losing all hope. REAL ESTATE ENTREPRENEUR: WHAT YOU WILL LEARN: Matt’s journey in the real estate business How Matt became a real estate entrepreneur What traits and characteristics Matt looks for in new team members during the recruiting process Matt’s perspective on scaling a real estate business The importance of hiring team members who are more talented than you, and who are aligned with your values How to get clear on the experience you want to create for your customers Why you need to embrace leadership to achieve peace, freedom, and happiness Why Matt believes anyone can learn leadership Build Your Business Around Your Strengths Matt Hudson is an incredible real estate entrepreneur who is driven by passion and progression. He is the founder and CEO of Colorado Home Realty, and his leadership principles are deeply aligned with our philosophy here at Pursuing Freedom. Matt pushes the CHR team to find joy in their work, do things that make them feel alive, and attract success by managing their energy. In this episode of Pursuing Freedom, Matt joins us to share their journey. He gives us an inside look at his process for creating an incredible culture and team, scaling his business, and developing a leadership style that yields results! Honor Your Gifts At one point, Matt was doing 50-70 transactions a year. But the transition to real estate entrepreneur would prove to be very challenging. He operated on the principle that “the customer is always right,” so when Matt became a leader, he spent a lot of time and energy making sure the people around him were whole instead of leading from his strengths. Once he consciously chose to honor himself and communicate his highest values to other team members, Matt achieved an entirely new level of clarity that took his business to a higher level. Peace, Freedom, and Happiness The common denominator of all leaders is that we don’t embrace leverage until we get clear on what we believe in, what we stand for, and what our environment will provide our clients. As a real estate entrepreneur, if you can articulate that and use it as a framework to hire team members who are more talented than you, you can realize your vision in a profound way. You will achieve an unbelievable amount of freedom when you define the experience you are trying to create for your customers. When we figure out how to embrace leadership, we can finally achieve peace, freedom, and happiness. Photo by Naomi Hébert on Unsplash ABOUT MATT HUDSON Matt is the founder and CEO of Colorado Home Realty. He is dedicated to surrounding himself personally and professionally with people who want to live big, dream big, act big, and profoundly impact the lives of others. For Matt, anything short of world-class is unacceptable. He continually searches for excellence within himself, and in stealing a line from Michael Jordan, “every day wakes to compete against what he thinks he is capable of.” Matt applies this drive and passion within his organization in a way that challenges and supports, grows, and evolves great people, business professionals, and leaders. Regarded for his analytical and strategic skills, ability to inspire and motivate people to dream big and perform at a higher level, Matt has been hired by banks, management consulting firms, private equity and venture capital firms, mortgage companies and title companies nationwide to assess business development performance and create strategies and training to affect change. After years as a top-producing real estate and mortgage professional, Matt founded CHR with a vision and desire to change the real estate industry by creating a company that stands for excellence, culture, world-class experiences and to be a model of what is possible. A serial entrepreneur, since 2005, Matt has started four other companies and has future plans for a consulting firm, many books he will write, an education company, and technology development. But his first love is real estate. Matt hails from a small island off the coast of Washington but has been a Colorado resident since 1999. He lives with his wife, Barrie, and their two children Hannah and Carson, in Littleton. Matt enjoys time with his family, coaching baseball, inspirational speaking, learning quantum theory, mountain biking, skiing, hiking, climbing, and running with his dogs. Matt is a coffee, wine, beer, and whiskey snob; he won’t wear shoes that haven’t been shined (unless they are biking shoes, hiking boots, or flip flops), loves to wear jeans and a sport coat, shorts and a t-shirt, and he gets his best ideas while mowing the lawn. In this episode, Matt, Steve, and Jessica discuss dive into why it was so hard for Jessica the first few years of our marriage. They start breaking down some of Matt's false beliefs and the stories he was telling himself about why he couldn't show up for her. Matt and Jessica describe the hardships of the early years of their marriage. For Matt, he dealt with a lot of security issues and spent those years testing the waters of their relationship. To navigate those years, Jessica often confided a lot of her own fears to Matt and he continually gave her some insightful advice into her current marriage with Matt. Though Matt and Jessica struggled, their commitment to marriage kept them focused on their goal of being a couple. That commitment is what allowed them to weather the storms that came their way. They have struggled with communicating their love languages with one another. For instance, Jessica describes the importance of little notes of appreciation or how in the early days she felt Matt wasn’t verbally expressive enough with his love. Matt struggled with his aversion to following societal norms and hoped Jessica could see the other ways he expressed his care and affection.Ultimately, they have all come to realize that love is always a work in progress. Now they work hard to show their love in ways each other will appreciate as well as take notice of the little acts they might have once over looked.Highlights of the Discussion: Jess’ funny story (6:00)Be Bold course (8:05)Testing the waters of their relationship (13:00)The commitment of marriage (22:10)Overcoming false beliefs (26:40)Expressing little acts of love (35:00)The takeaway from this episode (41:00)Additional Resources:www.Linktr.ee/TheBoldLogic--Be sure to follow us on Instagram and Facebook!--You can find the podcast on Apple, Google, Spotify, Stitcher, or wherever you listen to podcasts. If you haven’t already, please rate and review the podcast on Apple Podcasts!

It is not unusual to hear from folks who want farming to be a foundational part of their lives.  They may have a job that requires a long commute to their office cubicle or they are living on a small farm and can't quite make a living, with out adding some off farm income. Matt Brechwald was one of those people before he made the jump to a small farm in Idaho and started adding enterprises off farm that allowed him with his wife and daughter to live their dream.  For Matt those off farm enterprises included speaking, coaching and podcasting to help others "get in to farming and to love their lifestyle." “I build the journey that allows the best of nature to do its best and then I don't say a word.” Matt Prior loves exploring and discovering nature. As a pilot, Adventure Consultant for Red Bull, and founder of the World’s First Adventure Academy, Matt has exploration running through his blood. He lives a life fuelled by curiosity and presence; a life which has seen him visit over 120 countries, climb peaks in five continents, and take part in a collection of badass expeditions - all on a shoestring.Matt’s been featured in everything from CNN to Men’s Journal, Red Bull, Outside Magazine, and Business Insider. His overland expertise and willingness to push boundaries means National Geographic, the Discovery Channel, and the BBC have also approached him. And while Matt thrives on the rush and growth of high-adrenaline experiences and adventures, he also loves the groundedness he feels when he’s present in nature. “Be present every day. Smile. Be kind. Be open to anything and everything.” Nature is a potent teacher for Matt. For Matt, nature is the great reset button; a place where he can dissolve his ego and learn what it takes to live an incredible life - just by observing nature. In our current world of turbulence, uncertainty, and rapid change, Matt’s experiences are a powerful reminder that sometimes the biggest adventures start when you leant to stop and just BE. Here’s a taste of all the awesome things Matt and I discuss in this beautiful conversation. How curiosity and presence empowered Matt to navigate some big life challenges. Why values can be the foundation for purpose. What billionaire rags to riches stories have in common. How perspective can change your life. The parable of the broken vase. Why there can be beauty in the suck. Why Matt is drawn to adversity. When did we learn to resist our humanity? How you can learn everything from nature. And more! Nature is ready to give you a masterclass in how to live and how to embrace your humanity. In this episode of Building Us podcast, co-hosts Erik Garcia, CFP® and Dr. Matt Morris, LPC, LMFT, talk about the beautiful simplicity of a relationship, financial management as a couple, the importance of investing in a relationship, and why couples should tackle money issues together. Episode Highlights:As a financial advisor, Erik reads anything that says money is a predicament in marriage or relationships. (1:28)Matt explains the significance of money in relationships. (1:48)Matt says that the primary issue surrounding money has something to do with the couple who does not agree on how they should spend and manage their money. (2:57)Matt gives an example of a couple who disagrees on money (3:55)“Us” and “Me” are crucial for couples, and it’s not a static line. (7:11)For Matt, relationships are beautifully simplistic in certain ways but making it work day after day, year after year is wonderfully complicated. (8:35)As a financial advisor who talks about money all the time, Erik would argue that true security doesn’t come from money, it comes from relationships that we have. (11:51)Matt gives two examples of how money becomes a symbol of security. (13:38)Matt elaborates on why couples can’t survive without money and material resources. (16:09)Matt explains that everybody needs a certain amount of money and resources. (18:26)Erik explains why there’s no direct correlation between money and happiness. (20:19)Matt explains how good relationships and bad relationships change the way we perceive the amount of money we have. (20:37)Erik says that the idea of selfishness might be the problem and not money. (25:08)Erik Garcia and Matt give an acknowledgment that Black Lives truly matter. (28:40)Key Quotes:“The best type of financial security you can have is the ability to do with less”. - Erik Garcia, CFP®“Relationships are simple in that they don't require a lot of material resources to work”. - Dr. Matt Morris, LPC, LMFT“What I try to help couples to think about is not just who's earning how much money and is that equal, but I like to think about contributions. We are going to do things a little differently on today’s episode of the podcast.  We usually have ex-pros, coaches, mental coaches, or program owners.  Today we have two more Division 1 baseball players on the podcast.  The reason we are doing it differently is that these guys have made such a huge impact on the kids in our facility right now.  The kids are always asking if these players are going to be at the facility.  For these younger kids, they know they want to be D1 ballplayers because they love the sport.  These last two to three weeks they have actually been able to see what that dream looks like.  They see what these D1 guys look like and how they train.  Seeing their commitment has made the younger players want to train even more.  Today we are interviewing brothers, Matt McLain and Sean McLain. Matt is a sophomore and plays baseball for UCLA and Sean plays baseball at Arizona State.  Matt was drafted by Major League Baseball in the first round after high school and turned down a lot of money and went to school. Our youth throughout the country need to hear this.    Show Notes: [02:47] Matt McLain is a sophomore.  He plays shortstop at UCLA.  [02:52] Sean McLain is 19 years old and plays baseball at Arizona State.   [03:15] Sean shares his baseball journey and the importance of playing multiple sports.  [04:50] Their parents encouraged them to play more than one sport very early on. Play all the sports, have fun, meet new friends, and see what you like.   [06:04] They played Little League until they were 12 years old and then they moved on to travel ball through high school.   [08:48] Having each other and competing with each other made them all better.  [09:48] In 6th grade, Matt knew that he wanted to play sports for the rest of his life.  He loved baseball and football.  In 8th grade, baseball became his favorite sport.   [10:48] Matt was drafted in the first round after his senior year, but really wanted to follow his dream of going to UCLA.   [12:22] Matt had his dreams set early of going to UCLA and he made it happen.   [13:41] Matt gives the credit for his success to his parents who taught them if they want something they have to work hard at it.    [14:26] If you work hard and stay positive you will get something good out of whatever it is.     [17:52] Freshman year in college can be tough.  You have to fight really hard for a position on the field.   [19:09] For Matt, college baseball was more mental.  You can’t let what other people think about you catch up with you.   [20:04] As a freshman, Sean got off to a great start but a week before opening day he broke a bone in his hand.   [20:31] Get as many quality at-bats as you can.  Look at the positive side of tough situations, because you are just going to get better.   [21:37] For Sean it was really tough as his first time living alone, but he started setting reminders on his phone so he was always where he needed to be.   [22:26] It was the first time that Sean had to step out of his comfort zone and talk to other guys since he didn’t have Matt around.  He was lucky that some guys took him under their wing.    [24:16] Time management is big because you are going to have school, laundry, practice, and many other responsibilities.  Don’t procrastinate on your homework.  [26:11] They would go to school and then have practice right after school.  They would come home to eat dinner and after dinner, they would work out in their garage with each other.   [27:03] At college they would eat breakfast, lift weights, shower, and then go to class.  After class, they would go to practice.       [27:53] It is really important to get ahead of your next day.  Sean liked to plan out his next day in advance so he knew what he was doing and what free time he had.   [28:55] School is always the main thing for each day.  School is first and baseball is second.  [29:44] It is not just about baseball.  There are so many other things you have to focus on including school, family time, and religion.    [30:46] You can’t put all your eggs in one basket.  You have to be well rounded.   [31:36] Grades are really important.  They open up opportunities that otherwise would never happen.    [32:28] Matt always tries to create a challenge for himself in the classroom and on the field.   [32:50] At the end of the day it all comes down to if you are having fun.  If you’re not having fun playing baseball then don’t play it.   [34:40] These guys have made a huge impact on the kids at the facility.   [35:11] If you can take care of the small details, baseball is going to take care of itself.   [36:17] They did a few showcases, but Matt got recruited to UCLA through his high school team.  If you are good enough, they will find you at your own high school or travel team.  [37:02] If they are recruiting you, they know you are a good enough player.  The difference is in the type of person and teammate you are and the type of grades you get.   [38:40] No matter what happens just keep the same attitude and don’t slump your shoulders.   [40:09] Matt is an energy giver to his team.  Sean took it upon himself to be a leader on his team even as a freshman.   Links and Resources: Train More Play Less Website Train More Play Less on Instagram Train More Play Less on YouTube Train More Play Less on Facebook Train More Play Less Podcast Matt on Instagram UCLA Baseball on Instagram Sean on Instagram Arizona State Baseball

“Be who you needed when you were younger.” In today’s episode of The Fire in The Belly Podcast, Pete talks to Matt Thompson, the creator and host of the Best of Belfast Podcast, about his journey. He has launched a platform to showcase the beautiful places of Northern Ireland and its people. This has gained so much traction and success since it started. He has been putting the people of Belfast in the spotlight since 2017, and he doesn’t see it stopping anytime soon. Pete and Matt discuss many topics, including dealing with pain, healing, embracing faith, the pros and cons of technology/social media and helping others. He also gives some great tips on how to improve your creativity, so tune in today. KEY TAKEAWAYS The only remedy for your pain is acknowledging it and accepting that there will be changes. Living with it every single day will be hard. Many cope by escaping it, by resorting to addiction. This is very destructive since pain will always try to find its way to creep back in. And it may even hit you harder. So as early as possible, learn how to cope properly, so you finally heal. Walk down the path you think, and feel, is right for you. For Matt, his faith is very important to him. He’s a Christian, and there’s no shame in saying that. It gives him the power to overcome the fears & doubts and to push forward in life. Find something, or someone, that will drive you to better yourself. Matt will always be thankful to have found a partner he’s comfortable with and complements him. His wife Jaci has opened his eyes to a wider perspective on maintaining healthy relationships, on creating more worthwhile connections, and perhaps most significantly, on helping people. Two years ago, Matt quit all social media platforms—from Facebook to Instagram to Twitter,—he saw the toxicity it brought despite it helping his business thrive at the beginning. There are so many other ways one can conduct business transactions. He won’t ever forget his grandmother’s reaction whenever he shows her his new gadgets. She despises them, as she sees them as a danger to any person and their relationships. Matt adds that he enjoys learning from other generations since he gains some of their wisdom. He advises that you do too. Matt Thompson’s advice to improve your creativity: Be consistent. You improve and you become productive when you show up every time. Work in small chunks, then incrementally increase them through time. Sometimes, creativity needs tough love. Don’t get thrown off by the pressure of deadlines or not being the best. There will be something good that will come out of it, always. BEST MOMENTS “I try to understand other people to help me understand myself.” “We are expressing ourselves less and less. We’re much more passive now. And we’re consuming more than what we create.” “The life that I have lived and currently live is beyond my expectations.” “God says, ‘Use the choice between life and death. And I urge you to choose life.’” “To be present with your pain and to run into it.” “Creativity needs tough love.” VALUABLE RESOURCES Listen to Fire In The Belly Podcast in Apple Podcasts (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/fire-in-the-belly/id1499375061)! It's our season finale, where we bid a fond farewell to Freya, ship, and the cast of KSR's transcendent Aurora! We're experiencing some good ol' audio issues, but they're nothing compared to Freya's mythic struggles with the sun and the ocean. It's hard to sum up this book, and somehow equally as hard to sum up this chapter, but we do our best. This chapter is a lot about the difficulty of putting the feeling of being on earth into words--some call it defamiliarization, others call it estrangement, we call it art, and it rocks. For Hilary, this chapter is about feeling. For Matt, it's about overcoming the difference between reality and fantasy. For both of them, it's a joy. Takeaways: Utopia is hard, but necessary. It's not going to be found "out there." It's going to be built, like a beach or a work of art. Freedom is found in letting go. Don't feel bad if you have trouble letting go of your ideas, or if you find that others can't help but live in their ideas: that's where we live! And, go to the beach! Brandon Shelton comes from one of those long lines of military and he was ROTC in college, then active service, then reserves. He was a bond trader and landed right in the middle of the financial crisis so he has seen much, if not all. Their firm is a tech VC firm backing B-B, SAS companies that have security businesses with leaders that make good decisions under pressure. And they have that pressure now - and all have responded well so far. Matt Abrams was a board member for one of the portfolio companies and has become a strong member of the firm. Also from a military family, Matt has spent the last years in enterprise software. This current "downturn" is the third he has witnessed, so he is a veteran of more than just the military. Remote working is nothing new to Matt so the current lockdown situation is pretty transparent. For Matt, we have a tremendous opportunity now to rethink how we do business moving forward from the COVID impact. In the meantime, Brandon feels that only an amazing company, with a great investment price tag, will induce them to make any new investments. For now, they'll focus on the companies they currently back.

Today I speak with a man who has VAST experience telling true crime stories. Not just any true crime stories- the ones we all know and...love? Hate to love? Love to hate? It depends on who you are, I suppose. Matt Sprouse is a TV Producer who led Jupiter Entertainment's programming for years, but is out on his own now. He was always looking for ways to tell these headline stories in the most human, respectful, yet compelling ways. I know you will love today's conversation because we get some inside scoop on these major cases, but also because we transcend that to tackle the larger issues that many of us wrestle with as we consume true crime. Also, Matt surprised me with a personal connection to a high profile case that shaped how he approached true crime. ( hint: it caused him to AVOID it for a long time) Listen to find out which story. Also he just sold a project that is in in development ( though paused because of COVID19), and he couldn't publicly share which case it is, but he told me off the record, and OMG, I cannot wait for it. Welcome back to the Paleo View, 398. (0:40) For those of you who are listening in the future, we are still very much immersed in covid-19 at the time of the episode's recording. Specifically, in the United States, the number of diagnosed cases has surpassed other countries and continues to rise. For this week's episode, Stacy and Sarah wanted to share solutions to help us all cope with the quarantine. Stacy's resolution for the year is to be solution-oriented and to be a problem solver, which has worked out this year. We are all in unprecedented times, and we are all working through various stages of emotions from one day to the next. Fluctuations in these emotions are very normal. This period can cause trauma and will evoke stages of grief. We are all grieving a lot of different things right now, which brings about a range of emotions. All of this is normal. Stacy and Sarah want to help listeners identify the things you can focus your attention and energy on in positive ways. We want to help listeners positively and proactively funnel your energy so that if you are in a state of overwhelm you can do some things that help you. Stacy personally put some of the examples that they are going to share on today's episode into practice last week and she greatly benefited from them. All of the information that they are going to share is science-backed and has to do with emotional health.   Personal Experiences One of the things that Sarah has been doing in her home is a chronic adaptation. (4:00) They have had to do a lot of problem-solving to figure out how to adapt to challenges during this time. Sarah is finding that this situation is challenging her adaptability. It is such a dynamic situation, and so much is out of our control. To recognize what to control in your immediate environment can be a difficult thing to assess. What has been most beneficial for Sarah's family is to fully adhere to social distancing and physical isolation guidelines. There are new studies looking at asymptomatic transmission and that you can still spread the virus when you are an asymptomatic host. (see here and here) More data needs to be collected on this, but until it is available, we have to respect the guidelines that are being given. We have to protect the vulnerable members of our community and it could be a long haul. Sarah is asking the question, "how can I make this time something healthy for my family?". How can we continue our priorities with a healthy diet and lifestyle? How can we support our mental health? And how can we still have social connections and make this physical isolation sustainable? We are all trying to figure this out. None of us have had to do this before, and figuring out how to do it is a big challenge. Stacy too loves the importance of distancing ourselves from the words "social distancing", but to instead think of it as physical distancing. While we are isolated, many of us are not actually alone. For those of you who are alone, Stacy's heart is with you. Make sure you are getting enough time for you. Stacy realized she wasn't getting alone time and had to make that shift.   Working From Home While Stacy and Sarah are use to working from home, the challenge is that the house is now full of people. (14:10) Sarah and Stacy are missing their time alone, and the ability to think about their selfish needs. It impacts efficiency when you are working from home and accomodating those around you, especially students who need guidance with distance learning. Sarah has had to set up separate workstations for everyone in the family. They had to assess their needs and work around that when determining what each station needed. Stacy shared a glimpse into what her workdays look like. Set reasonable expectations for what you can accomplish each day. Stacy also shares her schedule with her boys and lets them know what she needs them to accomplish within the time frame that she is working. This is really helping with her effectiveness. Remember to feel good about the things you are accomplishing! Sarah has changed her daily routine quite a bit, and she shared more about her new schedule. They are still living following a routine. Bedtime is still a priority, but Sarah and her husband are no longer setting an alarm clock. Sarah is enjoying the chance to start the day working in her pajamas. She has been working a 7 to 3 schedule but is incorporating breaks for family time. Exercise time has been built into a time window when her focus typically changes. This has helped Sarah's productivity. Since Sarah's stress levels are overall higher, she is being very acutely aware of when she needs to pivot into stress-reducing activities. Sarah has been proactive to adapt to the day-to-day changes, emotions, stress levels, etc. Stacy shared on the importance of thinking through how your children are feeling during this time and giving them time to express those emotions. Feelings of chaos can trickle to those around you. Family meetings can be a great tool to help create a platform for sharing, managing expectations, and listening to others. In Stacy's household, they have had to recently be very mindful of their screentime usage. For Matt and Stacy, they position it so that the kids earn their screentime by doing various tasks. It became a positive mindset shift when the boys looked at it from the point of earning it, as opposed to screentime being taken away or reduced.   Distance Learning Matt and Stacy's boys haven't yet been given the tools for distance learning. (36:20) They will soon be rolling out optional online classes starting in mid-April. However, Stacy doesn't exactly know what that means and she isn't going to worry about it until they need to. Sarah noted that one of the challenges that we are having as a country is that every area is doing things differently. The shutdown is magnifying inequities that were already there. Sarah shared about how frustrating it is to not know what to expect because things keeping changing so frequently. They are still trying to figure out with Sarah's kids how they will determine where the students will land within the curriculum by the end of the academic year. For Sarah, her daughters have loved learning from home. They too have been utilizing family meetings to identify what the kids need. Sarah feels so much gratitude for her kid's teachers and their school, and the innovative things they are doing. Regardless of where your school district is at in unrolling distance learning, finding a way to maintain structure and routine for kids is key. When they need breaks, let them take breaks. The kids will help guide what they need. Sarah shared more about how her daughters have been guiding and structuring their routines. Arts and crafts projects have also been a great use of time for them, especially as a way to connect with family and friends they can't see. They have also been going through their board game closet as well. Sarah and her husband have been working hard to maintain as much normalcy as possible, and take the things that are abnormal and use the time for family bonding. They will continue to troubleshoot and adapt as time goes on and as time presents new challenges. If you are not doing enrichment activities it is ok. Take the time and space you need to decompress and spend that time with your family. It will take time to find your new normal. For Stacy, they have been selecting activities for boys that they can do from start to finish. Also giving them tasks that they can own has been key. Some more ideas from Stacy: yard work, cleaning out closets, donating old clothes and toys, pulling items from your pantry for the food bank, and reorganizing bookshelves. Give the kids (and yourself) wins, whatever that may look like. Set yourself for as many wins as possible.   Shopping Sarah wants to acknowledge the challenge of shopping for groceries and other essentials. (51:43) Stacy and Sarah are both tackling this differently, and they want to share some ideas and suggestions on this unique challenge. This has been one of Sarah's biggest changes to her routine. Sarah use to shop three to four times a week and is now picking one store and going only there. If they don't have something that was on their life they live without it. It has been challenging in terms of the meal planning aspect of it. Sarah has been shopping for 10-days at a time. It has been a mindset shift to be more flexible with meal planning and grocery shopping. Sarah had her first grocery shopping trip recently and she wasn't prepared for how anxiety triggering the experience would be. Part of it was the planning aspect, and the other part was how to social distance, not touch her face, utilizing self-checkout. She also expressed her appreciation for the employees showing up to do their job. Stacy added that one of the things we can do to express our gratitude for these essential employees is to reach out to our local stores and share your positive feedback with managers. It is also important to advocate that these employees should receive special pay for the work they are doing to help us live comfortably. The more we can advocate for them the more helpful it will be. Expressing gratitude to people as you encounter them while practicing social distancing, is really important. Stacy shared on the letter that Matt received for thanking him for his work and how special it was to receive that gesture of gratitude. A look into Stacy's grocery shopping experience: she went once and will not be going back again. Stacy did look into what the CDC says about where the virus can live and for how long. It can live on soft things, but it is very low risk. Stacy shared more about how they have been handling shipments. Check out this resource for more information. Sarah has been viewing things as potentially contaminated, but not necessarily requiring disinfection. Slow shipping has been an option that Sarah has been taking advantage of for a number of reasons. Sarah shared more on how she has handled shipments. Each of us needs to evaluate our individual risk. All of the recommendations that Stacy and Sarah are sharing are based on CDC and FDA resources. Stacy has restarted her Hungry Harvest subscription, and then uses that order to meal plan off of. She is also ordering from Butcher Box again. They are also ordering from Thrive Market now as well. Use this link and get $20 off, with no membership fees for 30-days. Stacy is ordering ahead knowing that there are shipping delays right now. Another route that Stacy is using is ordering from local stores that offer curbside pickup and/or delivery. It is an individual choice as to which approach is going to work best for you and your mental state. There are different ways to approach it that are going to make sense to you.   Mental Health One of the things that both Stacy and Sarah have experienced with this pandemic is new mental health challenges. (1:15:30) Give yourself the grace to feel your feelings and be ok with the ways your feelings change. Stacy has been trying to enjoy things that they don't get to do very often. Finn loves to bake and Stacy has been making the time to bake with him, giving him different challenges during the process. Stacy has also been spending more time in the hot tub. Other self-care ideas include painting your nails, taking baths, and finding pockets of things that allow you to enjoy the process. One of the things that Sarah has been doing is calling friends and family. Reaching out to strengthen one-on-one connections has been very helpful to Sarah's mental health. Brushing up an old skill and an old hobby with her little brother has been very moving. Sarah has been focused on giving herself things to do that require her whole brain. She shared more on some of her current writing projects and how she is focused on incorporating hobbies as well. Finding a group to collaborate with can be very beneficial. Doing things together makes you feel a little less alone.   Closing Thoughts Finding ways to not overwhelm yourself is critical during this time. (1:24:34) Set yourself up for success longterm - this is not something that is going to end next week. Do things that you can sustain, and not get yourself overwhelmed. Ask for help as well. Stacy shared information on how she is going to set boundaries and expectations around distance learning when the time comes. Turn to a support circle when you need to vent and process emotions. People want to hear that they are not alone in their feelings. Be careful about being in a negative mindset. A productive vent session can be a great goal to strive for. There are things we can't change, but taking everything one day at a time makes it more palatable. We are all in this together. This is a global, community-wide effort to protect the vulnerable and our healthcare workers. We are going to get through this and will one day tell our grandchildren about this experience. Take a step back and look at the challenge to find a creative solution that will work for your life. This is what we are all challenged with this normal that requires adaptation, self-sacrifice, but it is all something we are doing together for the greater good. Thank you for tuning in, and for however you are contributing to society right now. Stacy and Sarah will be back again next week! (1:30:39)

In this episode, Matt, Steve, and Jessica will chat about when it is the right time for someone to introduce whomever they’re dating to their kids, especially when they’re in a co-parenting/blended family arrangement. Jessica feels that the way to handle that is very personal and depends on the unique situation one is in. In her own experience, when she dated someone she would sometimes introduce him to Penny right away, but the one thing that she applied with every one of them including Matt (even after they were married), was that she was very cautious to never leave Penny alone with any of them. She echoes the importance of someone communicating with their co-parent about the people they’re dating if only to maintain a fair level of mutual respect. For Matt, when he would introduce someone to his kids would be determined by whether or not they had kids because he felt that someone who had kids would better understand what it was like to be a parent. The kind of relationship one has with whomever they’re dating is also critical because for example, Matt, Steve, and Jessica knew each other from church long before Matt and Jessica started dating, and so when they started dating it was easier for Jessica and Penny to trust him. Steve on the other hand believes in introducing someone to Penny to gauge whether they will have any sort of chemistry before he decides to take get more serious with that person. The last relationship he was in was very serious, and they were practically living together, but when they broke up, the guy totally disappeared and Steve could see that Penny had a difficult time processing that. That made him incredibly cautious about ever getting serious with anyone else. They all agree that one should be open with their kids about the people they’re interested in or dating, have a discussion with their co-parent about it, and generally talk to their kids about hard conversations so the kids can know that they can trust them to be honest with them. If you’re a co-parent or dating someone who is a co-parent with someone else, then this is going to be a very interesting, impactful, and resourceful conversation to listen to. Matt Clark - The Rainmaker System We're recapping a topic we've talked about lots on the podcast: LinkedIn. It's a brilliant platform for networking and we've had some great speakers on the subject. Today, we have someone who might take this a step further - Matt Clark - with the rainmaker system. Matt's company is called the Virtual Edge and they've created a programme called the rainmaker system. This is all about how to gain 2-5 high value leads per day, from LinkedIn...without paying for ads. So, what were the beginnings of the rainmaker system? First of all, what is a high value client? High value is all about it being B2B, anything above $2000. For Matt, he wants to be the most effective he can be, with the time and energy he is putting in. It's about working smart. Typically, what are the products or services Matt's clients are selling? A huge range. Coaching, consulting, advisors; construction and IT services - it's all across the board. However, Vital Edge is now putting an emphasis on coaching, consulting and advisors. http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Whats-the-question-you-answer-with-new-clients.mp4 Matt helps shut out all the noise and get more leads. The more people you can have a dialogue with upfront, the more people you can bring value to. Is there a way you can regulate the amount of leads you get? Matt says, how much you put in is how much you're going to get out. A bit of background... Matt started out in door to door sales in the UK. For him, marketing was very new. When he came back to South Africa he started selling door to door again. But, what he wanted was more leverage; to do something where he didn't need to go door to door, all day every day. He has gone down the road of Facebook and being Google partners. All of that works but there's a massive learning curve and it changes all the time. If you're a master now, in 6 months time everything will change. Matt knew how to create a network with people and build a real relationship fast; he wanted to somewhere or something that would help him do that. http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/LinkedIn.mp4 Matt's introduction to LinkedIn Like most people, Matt knew he needed to be on LinkedIn and created a profile. You add friends and family and then you never look at it again.  Then, he decided to look at it and dig deeper. As he started doing that and work with and connect with people, he realised there was more to be done. This is because the traction was amazing and he was receiving lots of engagement. Working one on one, however, wasn't; scaleable. So he had to create a different method whereby people could get the same results, if not better results, but in a much more leveraged way. That's when Matt and his team created the RAINMAKER SYSTEM. http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Quick-learner.mp4 What can be done to make LinkedIn work? ...and why do people not make it work? First of all, you need to answer questions. What's the product or service or training; why is it being provided; who are you targeting; what is the outcome? When you're dealing with LinkedIn, you've got to remember that it is a tool that will give direct access to the people you want. What you need to be doing - which is the difficult part - is ask the questions that help you get laser-focused on who your client is. This client profile needs to be based on the one that's going to give you more bang for your buck! Then, you need to create your pick-up line. This is usually where you'd have "MD of Virtual Edge" or something along those lines. The problem is people would think 'what on earth is Virtual Edge?' It has no relevance to them. Break it down, make it clear what you do - offer the promise and value of what you can do and not the job title or jargon. Essentially, think of this: What's the problem you're going to solve? What value can you deliver?

Dr. Matt Green assumes co-hosting duties today and talks about the life and times that made him what he is today. Veterans tend to have "something" that drove them to the military, a sense of adventure, structure, college, fight, serve something bigger than yourself and the proud list goes on. For Matt, it wasn't that simple, it would take a culmination of life to get him to that point, but when he got there he was still in uncharted waters. Coming from the poor mountains of North Carolina, Matt didn't have much in the way of adult guidance at a young age, but he was identified early as being naturally gifted. He had some great people along the way who defined him and took care in getting him to new levels. From starting college at UNC-Chapel Hill at 16 to leaving and joining the Army at 18, Matt has challenged himself with an intrinsic drive to achieve the goals he sets before himself and to face the challenges that life adds to the mix.  Richard Rowland's "Just For Today" segment no.6 is included today and what a great message that fit the episode perfectly. Richard reminds us that carrying ill will towards someone is burdensome, let it go and give forgiveness. When you do that, well, you gain a friend. This week's episode kicks off Horror Month at What Did We Miss? with four straight weeks of creepy, crawly episodes. Kicking things off is the 1974 slasher classic, Texas Chain Saw Massacre, which introduced to world to director Tobe Hooper and one of cinema's most enduring horror icons, Leatherface. For Matt, this is easily an all-time favorite. For Tony, well, he saw the remake if that counts (it doesn't). In this episode they discuss the origins of the film and Matt's relation to it, the surprising amount of humor, how the remake's excessive grime oversold the idea of the movie's murder house, how a lack of gore does not a PG-rated movie make, and the some of the stunning imagery that - much to Tony's surprise - made this a gorgeous grindhouse slasher flick.

GUEST BIO: My guest on today’s show is Matt Harrison.  Matt is an instructor on Python and Data Science material.  He has been co-chair of the Utah Python user group and has presented at conferences including PyCon, OSCon and OpenWest.  Matt is also an author of a number of books about Python, including the Treading on Python Series.   EPISODE DESCRIPTION: Matt Harrison is Phil’s guest on today’s show. He is a Python and Data Science Consultant who offers customized training to corporations and startups as well as consulting services through his company MetaSnake. Over the years, he has worked with a range of languages and platforms, including Pandas, Pylons, Django, CherryPy, Postgres, AWS, SQLAlchemy, SciKit Learn, and Matplotlib. Matt was the co-chair of the Utah Python user group as well as an author and public speaker. In 2012, he published his first Python book Treading on Python Volume 1: Foundations of Python. Since then, he has published several other books and is currently busy writing more. KEY TAKEAWAYS: (1.02) – So Matt, can I ask you to expand on that brief intro and tell us a little bit more about yourself? Matt explains that he runs a small consulting and training company called MetaSnake. He works with businesses big and small and spends half his time speaking to very technical people teaching them Python and data science. Right now, he is working on three more books. (2.09) – Python is quite a theme, in your career, what made you choose that, in particular? The first language Matt learned was Perl. He used it for his first summer job, so became very comfortable with it.   Matt was lucky enough to work with a really smart guy. At the time, he was building on a model to pull out relevant terms for their corpus of text. The guy he was working with wanted to use Tcl to get the task done and Matt thought Perl would do a better job. So, they agreed to meet in the middle and use Python instead. At that time, it was a relatively new language. Within 3 days they had the proof of concept working. Python just gelled with him, unlike, Perl, C and Java, which he had mostly been using up to that point. (3.42) – Phil asks Matt to tell the audience more about his books, which Phil understands are mainly about Python. Matt explains that his book “Illustrated guide to Python 3” is for beginners. He has also written an intermediate book, one that covers the Pandas library and a few others. All of which are available on Amazon. (4.14) – Can you please share a unique career tip with the I.T. career audience? Matt says his advice is to – get comfortable with being uncomfortable. When he was just starting out, his local Python meetup took place a couple of miles away from where he lived. But, he didn’t attend partly because it would take him outside of his comfort zone. A decision he regrets to this day. At the time, it was a very tight-knit group. Not attending meant that he ended up missing out on a lot of important interactions. Plus, he eventually ended up meeting everyone anyway. At the time he did not understand the power of interacting with others. If you want to further your career, you need to get away from your computer sometimes and mix with other people. (6.00) – Can you tell us about your worst career moment? And what you learned from that experience. For Matt that was when he started his small vertical niche software company. A lot of firms let them liked the software. But very few of them decided to buy. In a surprising number of cases, this was because using the software would mean they would have to fire someone. A lot of the firms were small and employed family members, so they really did not want a piece of software to replace them. When Matt heard this he just said OK and moved on instead of trying another sales tactic. He knew he had a good product, but his lack of sales skills meant he could not close the deal. (8.20) – What was your best career moment? For Matt, that was when he wrote his first book in 2010. He wanted to reach more people with his training and realized he could do that as an author. His self-published book was a great success and opened a lot of doors for him. (10.00) – Phil asks if the process of writing books gets easier. Matt says yes, to a certain extent it does. Things do move faster once you have created a process that works for you. He now finds it easier to start typing and get in the flow. (10.59) – Can you tell us what excites you about the future of the IT industry and careers? The fact that a lot of companies are now waking up to the power of their data is exciting. There is a lot of low hanging fruit. As a result, you can make a huge difference and do so very quickly. (12.14) – What first attracted you to a career in IT? Matt always enjoyed creating things. When he was younger, he attended a lot of art classes and thought he might end up being an artist. But, a family member encouraged him to take a programming course. Once he did, he realized that there is a lot of creativity involved in most areas of technology, including in the data science field. (13.23) – What is the best career advice you have ever received? Matt says that he actually ignored the best piece of career advice he got. In 2004, he was advised to get a job at Google, but he didn’t. Fortunately, he did follow another great piece of advice, when he was told you need to network, he started doing exactly that. It is hard for a lot of programmers to network, because, by nature, many of them are introverts. In the IT world, you usually get good jobs, not because you interviewed well, but, because someone in the company knows you. So, learning to network is something everyone has to do. (14.33) – Phil points out that effective networking does not always have to happen face to face. There are plenty of online tools you can also use. Matt says that personally, he prefers face to face networking. However, he has seen people using Twitter and LinkedIn for job hunting. In fact, he tried it once and was contacted by about 40 people, so it can work. (15.43) – If you were to begin your IT career again, right now, what would you do? Matt is intrigued by the idea of taking the full-time, online immersive Computer Science courses offered by the Lambda School. They do not charge for their courses, at least not at first. Instead, you pay for your tuition once you get a job. Although, he goes on to say that he enjoyed his college experience. So, if he were to start again, he would probably still opt to attend Stanford and get a degree. His advice to someone who is just starting out would be to go and get a job at Google or somewhere similar. Work for a big company for a few years. Build up your connections and involve yourself in the community. Having a firm like Google on your resume is still something of a golden ticket. (18.40) – What are you currently focusing on in your career? For this year, Matt’s focus is growing MetaSnake. He really enjoys spending three or four days with a group of people who are motivated and excited to learn, so wants more clients. (19.53) – What is the number one non-technical skill that has helped you the most in your IT career? Matt likes to think of himself as creative. Fortunately, when it comes to machine learning and data exploration creativity is a great skill to have. (20.31) – Phil asks Matt to share a final piece of career advice with the I.T. Career Energizer audience. Matt’s advice is to look at where you are now. Then think about where you want to be a year and five years down the line. Ask yourself what you want to achieve. It could be publishing a book, speaking at conferences, or something else. Matt has found that desire and motivation have helped him to move his career forward. BEST MOMENTS: (4.30) MATT – "Get comfortable with being uncomfortable." (5.16) MATT – "The more I network and connect with people the more value I can bring to them and the more value they can bring to me." (11.46) MATT – "There is a lot of low hanging fruit that companies can take advantage of.” (13.51) MATT – "The best career advice I have seen is to network" (20.42) MATT – "Look hard at where you are and know where you want to be." GUEST BIO: Matt Raible is a Developer Advocate at Okta and a Web Architect for Raible Designs, striving to find the best solutions for developing web applications.  He also writes a lot of technical blog posts on the Okta Developer Blog as well as articles for InfoQ.  Matt is a fan and developer of the JHipster project and he develops and maintains the JHipster Mini-Book and the Ionic JHipster Module. EPISODE DESCRIPTION: Phil’s guest on today’s show is Matt Raible. He is a skilled web developer who has been working in the industry since the early 90s. Matt is also the man behind the open source AppFuse project and the Okta Developer Blog. Currently, he is working as a Developer Advocate for Okta. He is also a well known public speaker and is deeply involved in the JHipster project. Matt maintains and develops the JHipster Mini-Book and the Ionic JHipster Module. KEY TAKEAWAYS: (1.02) – So Matt, can you expand on that brief introduction and tell us a little bit more about yourself? Matt explains that he has been working as a web developer since the early 90s. He had not planned to have a career in IT. In the early 2000s, he got into Java. By 2004 he was also involved in public speaking.  (1.44) – So, you obviously enjoy the web aspects of development. Is that something you deliberately pursued as the internet sort of exploded and expanded? Matt says yes, it was. In the early 2000s, he realized that it was best to be the guy who wrote the UI. Simply because that is what people see and are most aware of. He enjoyed doing the demos and getting the accolades, so he ended up focusing on UI development. (2.25) – Can you please share a unique career tip with the I.T. career audience? Matt’s advice is to create a six-week plan of the things you want to accomplish. He has found following this advice to be very helpful, especially for his work as a developer advocate at Okta. Putting together a six-week plan keeps you on track and enables you to achieve a lot more. It is far more efficient than simply working week to week. He also finds it useful to do this for his personal life too.  (3.52) – Is it a rolling six-week plan? Matt revisits his plan on a weekly basis. He and his team also summarise what they have actually done each week. This information is published in an internal newsletter. (4.35) – Can you tell us about your worst career moment? Matt says that he has two he wants to share with the audience. Luckily, they are both turned into silver lining moments. In 2007, he was working for LinkedIn as a contractor. Helping them to select and set up an open source, Java web framework. Things went well and they asked him to create his own team. So, Matt asked some of his friends and former colleagues to join him. Two months after they started working together they were persuaded to go full-time. Yet, 6 months later they were all laid off.  That was in 2008, just as the downturn started. That time, the silver lining was that nobody was really enjoying the work they were doing because they had been switched from the front end to non-developer roles. Luckily, within a week, they were picked up by another organization where they became front end developers again. The 2nd moment occurred 5 years ago. For 19 years, Matt had been working as a consultant. During all that time, he never had any trouble in finding full-time work, filling a 40 hour week. Suddenly, he could only find a part-time gig. He found this hard. That is until he realized what a glorious thing having 20 spare hours a week was. At that point, he started doing more with his personal life and, as a result, became a happier person. (6.47) – What did you learn from those experiences? Matt says that the LinkedIn experience taught him not to be afraid to change jobs when he finds himself in a role where he is not using his skills. He really did not enjoy his last few months at LinkedIn because his new boss had moved him away from UI development into a nonproduction position. So, when LinkedIn let him go he was actually relieved.  (7.49) – What was your best career moment? Matt is lucky to have had quite a few career highlights. He particularly enjoyed seeing his open source project AppFuse take off. For about 2 years, he was spending about 30 hours a week interacting with users, learning and seeing hundreds benefit from this project. Unfortunately, there was a downside, his family life suffered as a result. (9.25) – Can you tell us what excites you about the future of the IT industry and careers? Matt is excited by the fact that it is possible to take a relatively small amount of knowledge and do a lot with it. Being able to take something that you have taught yourself and turn it into a good career is fantastic. With IT, you can still do that, even these days. (10.22) – What drew you to a career in IT? Matt had studied Russian and International Business. But, when he spent the summer working in Russia he realized it was not for him. So, he decided to complete a 5th year and take a finance degree. Unfortunately, again, when it was time to find a job he struggled. There was work, but the pay was not very good. Around the same time, his friend who was doing a computer science degree was getting amazing offers. Three times what he was could land. So, Matt switched his focus to IT. (11.37) – Do you think that is still true, today? Matt says things are changing. When it comes to the finance industry, if you excel, you can actually get paid a lot more than you would working in the tech industry. The cool thing is that if you are curious, you can carry on learning and add to your skills. In time, you will end up earning even more and staying gainfully employed becomes very easy.  (12.18) – What is the best career advice you have ever received? Around 2005, Matt was working as a consultant for a startup that was shutting down. While discussing what Matt was going to do next the CEO advised him to double his rate. That is exactly what he did, that year. Each year after that, he added 20% to it. (13.04) - Phil asked Matt if he was saying that you should make sure that you get paid what you are worth. Matt replies that you should always ask for more, because often you will discover that people are actually prepared to pay a much higher rate. (13.09) – If you were to begin your IT career again, right now, what would you do? Matt says that he would not change a thing. His career has enabled him to fulfill his dream of restoring his old Volkswagen bus, which has taken nearly 10 years. He has big plans for that bus.  (14.26) – What are you currently focusing on in your career? Right now, Matt is where he wants to be with his career. But, he is working at getting better at drawing, so he can add more hand drawings to his blog. He is also planning to do more videos, screencasts and to get into recording meetups. (15.02) – What is the number one non-technical skill that has helped you the most in your IT career? For Matt, the ability to speak publically has proved invaluable. (15.10) – How did you get into that? In 2004, a friend suggested he speak at ApacheCon. He decided to give it a go. Surprisingly, within 15-minutes of being on stage, his nerves evaporated and he felt at home. Even today, he gets very nervous before each talk, but once he gets started he feels comfortable, fairly quickly. The other non-technical thing that helps Matt is being an outdoorsman. Most days, he takes a walk or rides his bike. During these activities, he finds that he automatically settles a lot of things in his mind. Phil agrees that being outdoors is quite therapeutic. (16.32) – Phil asks Matt to share a final piece of career advice with the audience. Matt says – “If you really want to get something done close off your email, you slack. Turn on some music and write some code.” Once you have eliminated distractions, you will be far more productive. BEST MOMENTS: (1.29) MATT – "I started developing web pages in HTML before Netscape even existed" (2.48) MATT – “Create a six-week plan of the things that you want to accomplish" (7.44) MATT – "If I'm not utilizing my skills, then maybe it's time finding another job." (12.10) MATT – "If you're curious, you can keep learning and keep improving yourself and keep gainfully employed." He’s the author of the Guide to Nonprofit Consulting, and teaches nonprofit management at several universities, via the web, and in-person in the United States, Africa, Asia and Europe. Matt’s past work includes fundraising for several nonprofits. He has an MA in Philanthropy and Development from St. Mary’s University of Minnesota.  Interview Questions What impact are you motivated to make in this world? Matt loves teaching. He began at a young age and knew immediately he enjoyed it. He just wishes he’d listened earlier in life while others were giving him clues that could have moved him in the direction of teaching topics helpful to nonprofits sooner.  He shared that in Daniel Blink’s book, “Drive” he says to go do what motivates you.  Helping nonprofits across the world make their impact is definitely what drives Matt. That has been his focus now for years and he recently launched a website that provides learning to nonprofits that is time-efficient and cost effective.  Many of the offerings are free, while others are modestly priced. What life experience motivates you to make your impact? His time as a young man in Boy Scouts is what first sparked the realization that it’s important to pay attention to how you are sharing knowledge.  He loved how hands on the learning was there.  That made it easier for he and others to learn. What impact have you made that really fuels your passion? What impact are you focused on next? What is the biggest internal or external challenge you’ve had to overcome?  And how did you overcome it For Matt the biggest on-going challenge to success has been self confidence.  He reminds himself often, “I can do this!” and, “I am good enough!”  As a solopreneur it is often challenging to wear all of the hats.  You get good at one thing and then need to add another task.  Social media has been a recent focus. I love what Matt says about Persistence!  He says that the outcome of persistence is what people “suddenly see when they haven’t seen all the small steps. How do you stay motivated and moving during tough times? What words of wisdom do you have for others who want to make an impact? His words of wisdom to others working to make their impact: Speak Up Ask Questions Simple Do! If something is bothering you, you might be the one who makes it happen! And he tells himself often, “If I got a paycheck job I wouldn’t be better off!”  It helps him prod through the tougher days! He also stresses the importance of having a good support system.  He appreciates that his wife has been on this journey with him all along What's one success strategy that has helped you? And, on the importance of Nonprofits, some insights I hadn’t thought about before! Nonprofits are an important conduit to our making an impact.  The prevalence of direct giving through sites like GoFundMe as increased the opportunity to misdirect money.  He shared a local news story where the story of a homeless man sparked a large giving effort.  However, the story turned out to be false and the funds did not ultimately help the man. In addition, he shared how philanthropy survives in a Democratic society but can’t work is well without.  In his example, he shared that if someone identified and spoke about a problem of water quality in a place like North Korea you would be seen as questioning the State, an unwelcome initiative.  And, if you further had a desire to fix it, you would be seen as suspect. In contrast, in a Democracy citizens can point out problems and seek to resolve them through philanthropy and nonprofits. Matt's Website: https://nonprofit.courses

There are people in our lives that everyone knows, and that everyone holds in high regard. That respect often comes from the actions and good works of those individuals. Sometimes it’s their good nature that places them in such high regard. More often, it’s some combination of both. I’m always looking to meet them, these people who bind good works with their good nature, and share their heart and soul with you on Find the Good News. Matt Young, the director of 1911 Historic City Hall Arts and Cultural Center in Lake Charles, Louisiana, is one of those people. I’ve spoken to Matt many, many times over the years, and while our conversations were never very long, I was always left feeling better than I did before the encounter. Some have said that's Matt’s special gift, the ability to make a person feel like their conversation was the most important one that he had all day. I wouldn’t disagree with that. Matt’s friendly, charming, articulate, and professional; precisely the person anyone would want representing their project, group, organization, or movement,… but I’m always interested in the source. Where do these good qualities come from? What gives rise to them? What’s holding them all together? For Matt, like many of us, it is in the golden seam, the gilded glue that celebrates the cracks and fractures instead of running from them or denying their existence. Like many—like all—Matt Young has faced his own doubts, insecurities, and personal pains. He’s covered his true-and-best self—as many of us have done—fearing that in revealing all our parts we would lose many in our circles of friends, family, and peers. By bringing all the parts of his life out into the open, Matt has actually been witness to something wonderful, something that I would wish for all people. It is the golden seam that binds people to each other, the shining goodness that can be found in the beings around us if we give them a chance to be brighter, the glimmer of hope that invades the cracks and fractures, that heals, that unites. Yes, we talked about his professional journey to where he is today, as well as the new and exciting things that he, and those working with him, have in store for us at 1911 Historic City Hall. While all of those things are soaked in good news for Southwest Louisiana, I believe it’s Matt Young’s heart, radiating genuine kindness and goodness, that will make all of his good works and future endeavors pure gold. ========== THIS EPISODE IS SPONSORED BY PARKER BRAND CREATIVE SERVICES >> www.ParkerBrandUp.com FOR MORE INFO ABOUT MATT YOUNG & 1911 HISTORIC CITY HALL >> www.instagram.com/mattyoung84 or www.facebook.com/mattyoung84 and www.facebook.com/historiccityhallartsandculture

Today's gnarly episode is with Connecticut's surfing priest, the Rev. Matt Lindeman, rector of St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Milford. He is originally from Nebraska, and both his parents are Episcopal priests. In eighth grade he moved to San Diego, California where he cultivated his love of surf and church.   Matt came to Connecticut in 2009 and began working with the youth group at Trinity, Southport in 2013 while serving as director of family ministries there. Matt lives in Milford with his wife, two children, and  multiple surfboards.   He is a returning guest to Coffee Hour at The Commons. Read a New Haven Register article about the surfing priest.   We talked about surf boards; how he started surfing as almost "morning prayer" before Algebra class, how he eventually got better (after falling and falling and falling), and all of the lessons he learned from his experiences. For Matt, finding God in the wilderness sometimes means paddling into the open water with San Diego or New York or Connecticut behind you.    A few years into his relocation to the east coast, he got back into surfing through his work in Southport, which lead to creating a larger youth group surfing trip ever October, where he still teaching! He has found new places to go surfing (he likes to go toward Rhode Island and the Cape).  Built up relationships with east coast surfing shops in Narragansett, which rented out wetsuits and boards to the youth group.    Now, in Milford, he still takes advantage of days off to head out with a board or two, or sneaking in a few hours before or after a friend's ordination to hit the water, and uses plenty of metaphors from surfing in his sermons.

We all want to build better WordPress websites. Unfortunately, they don’t always end up looking great. If there was a way that you could bundle it all and build a website in, say, a weekend, would you take it? Well then, brace yourself, because it IS possible to build a WordPress site in a weekend! In this episode, we get a little help from Matthew Averkamp who knows all about building a website in a matter of days. I spoke with Matthew about Launch Party, his new course and toolkit for beginner WordPress site builders. He’s created a program that can teach anyone how to build a website from scratch. Here at WPE we call it “a website in bag” because it literally comes with everything, all the way down to customizable color schemes. Tune in now to hear Matt and I talk about where he came up with the idea and why he’s offering his courses and templates absolutely 100% free forever. Like Father, Like Son Matt has been building his own businesses for the past 15 years, but his first foray into the world of online courses was actually with his father. Matt and his dad created Accounting Coach, a website for online accounting courses and toolkits that’s still seeing traffic to this day. The problem was that Matt didn’t want to keep creating new content for accounting when he’s much more interested in user testing and helping people build their own businesses online. He started Launch Party this year with a focus on being able to build an entire website (from scratch, mind you) in a weekend. He teaches from the templates he’s created in order to help consultants and other entrepreneurs build beautiful websites quickly. Because the faster you get online and running, the faster you can grow your business. Matt’s Nomadic Entrepreneurial Journey Matt is addicted to traveling. In fact, right now he’s in Thailand. But no matter how long he’s traveling or where he goes, he’s always thinking about his business. That’s the luxury of working remotely and helping others build and host websites. It gives him the freedom to focus on what really matters, and this year it was split-testing. Split-testing is just a fancy way of making sure your website works the way you and your users want it to. For Matt, his year-long split test saw revenues increase by 30%, which is more than enough to keep this man comfortable as a nomadic entrepreneur. “Structure your business in such a way so that you can step away from it.” Matt’s business structure relies a lot on remote teams. He may be in Thailand, but his design team is in Canada, and his friend in the United States takes care of the customer service side of things. But Matt swears you don’t need to maintain daily communication to keep your business running smoothly. His strategy involves keeping everything project-based so that it’s much easier to manage across long distances. While his team is working on their own projects, Matt spends his time doing what he loves most about this business: user testing. At the 27-minute mark, Matt breaks down why user testing is so important to his business model and how he uses it to create the unique structure of his Launch Party course and toolkits. Some important takeaways from Matt’s user testing toolkit are: Start out small with something like a course outline or an “about” statement to see what kinds of users are interested; Advance with an easy tutorial to see how skilled your users actually are; Pay close attention to user patterns and where users are having the most difficulty; and Include plenty of visual tools, like timelines, so both you and your users can see where and how the growth will happen. Now Let’s Talk About Building a WordPress Site with Launch Party Through extensive user testing, Matt was able to figure out exactly what new users needed from a WordPress tutorial. Because it’s quite overwhelming out there. For example, if you go searching for elementor templates, you’ll have hundreds upon hundreds of options at your disposal. But with Launch Party, Matt created one killer feature that makes him stand out. I’m talking about the customizable color option! “It was impossible to come up with premade color schemes that everybody liked.” User testing showed that people were very sensitive to the colors used on their website, but Matt couldn’t come up with a universal color scheme that pleased everyone. So he simply made it possible for users to modify colors to fit their own unique tastes. You just find a color pack you like, customize the colors until they’re perfect for you, then download it and use it in any of your Launch Party templates. No other templates give you this much creative freedom! Just don’t go overboard with it. I’m guilty of that. Tune in at the 19-minute mark to hear about my favorite Launch Party color scheme and what possessed me to try and change it all for no reason. It’s a weird element in human nature that Matt tapped into with his user testing. We all, for some odd reason, want to change things even if they’re perfect, just to see what happens when we do. Launch Party makes that possible to do with your website, and it makes it easy to change it back if your suddenly change your mind like I did! What does the future hold for Launch Party? While Matt, myself, and the rest of the world are waiting on the new WordPress to launch, Launch Party has its own new features waiting in the wings. New colors will be coming - Matt promises a pastel pack, but the toolkits and courses he’s designed are specifically catered to building a WordPress website from scratch. The future of Launch Party will include a weekend-long course where new and seasoned WordPress aficionados can come together for a weekend and build their WordPress sites together. The course will end with a launch party for everyone’s sites, which is what inspired the name of the company to begin with. Users can look out for this course and others like it in 2019. Wrap Up The most important takeaway from this episode is not how quickly you can build a WordPress site, although that is pretty amazing. The nugget I’m focused on most is the custom content and user testing Matt put into Launch Party. He custom built his own LMS based on user testing so he could deliver exactly what his customers wanted. He listened to their feedback and logged their experiences on his site and tutorials in order to create a program that is not only user-friendly but also completely free. He noticed that there was no one else out there offering quite what he envisioned, and he empowers entrepreneurs like us by offering this invaluable content free of charge. Entrepreneurial anxiety is real, all of us feel it but very few of us admit it as often as we do. It can come up out of nowhere and affect us throughout the day.  We look over our shoulders feeling like we are constantly missing something. On my group coaching call tonight with my hand mastermind, a long-standing client of mine Matt Barker asked why he was feeling this anxiety in his events company. For Matt, and possibly for you, the answer and solution were both simple.

How the current model of free content paid for by ads and sponsorships is not very solid and certainly not scalable. For Matt this meant that he couldn't see himself as a games journalist in the long term. While he was taking his bachelor in journalism, Matt spend his free time watching Heroes of Newerth matches and later on League of Legends and he realised that the esports industry would need professional journalists. So he started focusing on esports both as a writer and a streamer. After quitting a job at a software company, he started freelancing in esports. On this episode, we're sitting down with two entrepreneurs who pulled back the curtain of their organization and gave us a front row seat into their startup process to help our new business become a legacy. Let's get to the podcast… ||ROI MUSIC|| MATT: Welcome to another episode of the ROI Podcast presented by the Indiana University Kelley School of Business. Just send us an email at roipod@iupui.edu.  How many times have we had an idea and thought, “that could make a great business?” Or how many times have we thought about branching off and starting our own company? Well for those of us who are looking where to start, today's episode is for you. PHIL: Many times, an idea may seem too basic or we have the, “of course that idea's been done” thought run through our head. Yet, a lot of the time, those are the ideas that launch successful businesses. According to the Bureau of Labor statistics, the number of established companies, less than a 1 year old, is the highest it's been since the 2008 financial collapse. The job creation these young companies create are increasing, and overall more companies are entering the economy than there are exiting. According to the Small Business Administration, companies with fewer than 500 employees provided 64% of the new jobs in our economy. So it's clear to see that these ideas not only have the potential of creating a solution to a consumer's problem, but they are crucial to sustaining a strong U-S economy. MATT: So the question becomes, where do we start? How do we take this idea from conception to the market? We sat down with two bright minds from RealYNC, a real time video platform that instantly connects real estate professionals with prospects to tour a space. Co-founder and CEO Matt Weirich and Director of Operations Jordan Easley took us through their hard-fought entrepreneurial journey. Here's Matt Weirich: Matt Weirich: I knew ultimately my end goal somewhere in my life would be start a business, have a company of my own. So I was always thinking in snippets of ideas and opportunities. When I was moving from Purdue up to Chicago, I looked at 40 different places to live, in person, drove up there 6 weekends in a row to look at properties. And half of them, I would walk in, turn around and walk out within seconds. I instantly knew I wasn't going to be living there. Very frustrating process, very broken process and so, I started looking at the process very critically. What could of been done differently, what I could of done, had or used to streamline that. And it just so happened that May of 2011 was when Facetime came out. I just put two and two together. I would have absolutely had my agent walk me through those properties virtually, while sitting on campus at Purdue. I could have knock out half of my trips to Chicago. It was one of those light bulb moments where I saw a gap in the market, saw an opportunity, started shooting a few things around. I talked to some agents and brokers that were in my network already. Started asking them about this sort of experience with clients, if they felt that pain point as an agent. Started talking to some of my friends on the consumer side of it as well and just identifying those initial triggers. Is this an opportunity beyond just myself? Is this impacting our industry? Is this impacting just my demographic? How big is this and how far does it go? I kind of sat on the idea for a little bit. About 2 years while I was a consultant. Eventually I just saw that pain point reiterated time and time again. Especially as a consultant. We were traveling on the road Monday through Thursday, Monday through Friday every single week for the job. One of the hardest things I saw my colleagues go through was trying to find a place to live because they couldn't physically be there. Finally, it got to the point I could not stop thinking about the idea. I knew that if I tried to go for it alone, it probably would not get to where it needed to be. At a work event, I started to talk to my then colleagues, my now co-founder of the business. He instantly clicked with the idea and we were in my apartment the next weekend, whiteboarding and figuring out the business plan. PHIL: For those of us unfamiliar with RealYNC, they provide live and edited real estate tours all through a mobile device or computer. Basically, you can tour an apartment or house anywhere in the world. An apartment agent or real estate agent, using their own phone, walks you through the property – saving the client time or resources, especially if they live far away. As Matt said, the idea started from an annoyance, a pain point as he calls it of having to add many miles, spend money to travel, and find himself disappointed each time he found nothing. MATT: Matt even admits this business idea seems like something a million people could have thought of and started, but they didn't. He was annoyed with how he was shopping for housing, so he made a solution that's now become a successful business. So, the first key take-a-way when bringing your business idea to life is to embrace the reality that your idea is not too simple. Matt Weirich: The number one question I got when I was building this company was, "why wouldn't someone just pull out Facetime?" It's a free solution, it's on their phone already and that was always the question in the back of my mind. Is there enough of an opportunity here that people will pay for it and pay for a built for real estate solution. There are so many constraints with Facetime. It's only one-to-one, it's apple only. As soon as it's done it's gone. It's reliant on memory. All of our live tours are saved and recorded through the cloud. PHIL: Here's a big differentiator that sets Matt apart from many others. He did not let the discouragement of, “why can't someone just use Facetime?” stop him. In fact, used those questions to help improve upon his initial concept by dreaming of things like, “well what if when you jump on a video call, the user can save that video to watch later? What if anyone with any phone or device could watch? What if multiple people wanted to jump on at the same time?” Etc. Instead of us letting others tell us why our idea won't work or why it's already done, use their criticism to our advantage. Inside those push-backs lie the keys to differentiation – and differentiation leads to a successful business solution. MATT: The second key take-a-way to bring your business idea to life is to really take your time and do extensive research. Matt Weirich: Our first investor in the business, he actually cut us a check, no strings attached, before anything was formed and gave us the advice of, "don't build anything. Go out, go to conferences, go to focus groups - just talk to your target audience before you build anything." Understand the personas, understand the needs and the opportunities. And really, that's what we did for the first 10 to 12 months before we even thought about building a product. We speced things out. Speced out what the product would be, what the messaging would be, go-to-market strategy, all of that. But ultimately it was listening to the market and figuring out what this company needed to be to have a valid market opportunity and a chance at surviving. Once we go to a point where we were very confident in what we needed to build and what would drive value for our end customers, we brought on a technical member of the team, built out an MVP, minimal viable product just enough to get in the hands of some test users and really hit the ground running from there. So it was ultimately the upfront research we did, the market analysis, doing the focus groups and the surveys and just getting in front of both sides of the market. The consumers and the agents and real estate professionals. That was ultimately what gave us comfort in knowing that there was a valid opportunity here.  PHIL: We need to remember that creating a business takes a lot of time. We have to embrace that truth. So, if we're going to be in the trenches for the long haul, we better make sure we know who were reaching. And more importantly, we want to know what the consumer really needs – not what WE think they need. This part of the startup is like building the foundation to the house. Though the aesthetics are not pleasing nor does it show a home's character, without it, every piece of wood, brick, curtain, and furnishings crumble like a house of cards in a summer's breeze. We cannot underestimate this step in the process. MATT: Once we embrace the idea that our idea is not too simple, then take extensive time to research, the third key take-a-way for bringing our business idea to life is to drown out the noise. Matt Weirich: That was one thing early on in Chicago when we started our business that I felt like there was a lot of noise. I feel like there were a lot of people in Chicago in particular that were playing start-up, playing entrepreneurs were clearly not going to go anywhere but they were just so many events, so many places to be, so many scenes to be in that ultimately it was a distraction. And that's quieter here in Indianapolis. There's still great ecosystems, and meetups and coworking spaces where you can be in community with those other people going through the same seasons, but it's focused on hard work, it's focused on results, it's focused on growing and actually building value. Like I said, early on in the process, we were going to all these hang outs and entrepreneurial events and trying to be in the scene, which was fun but it was distracting. Ultimately, looking back it just pulled us away from stuff that we could have been working on, could have been doing and could have been listening to the market and building product and things like that. Focus on the customer, focus on your clients, your market and just listen to them. They will show you the path that you need to be on. They will tell you what your product needs to be, what it needs to do. Their opinion is ultimately that values most. Not even investors and all that. It's your end customer. That's who you need to be listening to. PHIL: We must keep the real thing, the real thing. Entrepreneurship is all about creating a solution to a problem through a new business. We cannot lose sight of our company. There will be times throughout the journey our focus will try to shift. Whether it's from mentors who check in once a week, startup hang out groups, or investors trying to steer the direction of the company. I'm not saying to avoid all these things, hide in a closet and don't see sunlight until we have a finished product. What we need to do is understand our why. Remember why we decided to start, why the world needs our solution, and why we're putting this much work into creating this solution. Our why becomes our anchor and protection when the noise comes which acts as a filter to every decision we make. Simon Sinek offers an incredible Ted Talk on this – if you have not listened to it, I highly recommend it. MATT: Once we drown out the noise around us and stay focused on our conceptual business idea, the fourth key take-a-way to creating a successful startup is to hone in on a super specific market segment at the start. Matt Weirich: Sitting where I am and looking back and reflecting, we wasted a lot of time. We were chasing every shinny object and we didn't really hone in on a particular market, a particular segment where we may have been seeing success, but we could also have success here, we could also have success here. So that lack of focus early on probably held us back from some strong initial growth because we were all over the place. Especially in the real estate industry where you got commercial and multiple parts of commercial, with retail, industrial, all of that. You've got residential sales, you've got multi-family student living, senior living, there are so many different segments of the real estate industry that our platform works perfectly for, but they all take different go-to-market strategies. What really got us to where we are today was honing in on the product market fit where we had a true B to B opportunity and the product was proving successful quicker. And honing in on that success is what really expanded our growth. Jordan Easley: Being very very focused, and understanding if I'm going to build a product, sometimes that paralysis that you mentioned Matt, might come from, "I'm trying to go after too many things all at once." So by segmenting your market, you're going to market one way to all of these people. You're not going to have to big, total addressable market. That number's probably not going to be as big if you hone in your specific market segmentation, but you're going to be able to market to them, you're going to be able to speak their language in the sales process more effectively. You're going to build a product more specific to their use case. You're not going to be trying to build integrations with 20 different industries, you're going to be building it for one and you're going to be an expert in that. Once you own that one market segment, you can go to a peripheral segment where you can tweak a little bit of the marketing or product or the sales process to fit that adjacent market. Again, Scott Maxwell, highly recommend that.  PHIL: Because we're so passionate about our idea, we can easily think of a million ways why every individual on the planet could use our product. Yet, this is dangerous because the reality is, our initial product only addresses the solution to a very specific market segment. Focusing on that group, instead of a super broad approach, like Matt and Jordan said, will allow us to master our solution and guide us on where to expand. MATT: We've gone through the process and now we are off the ground running as a business. Our idea is not too simple, we've taken time to do our research, we've silenced the noise around our organization, we've identified and honed in on our super specific market segment, and now the 5th and final key, and most important take-a-way to bringing your business idea to life is to persevere. Matt Weirich: Hands down, the biggest lesson I've learned through all this is persevere. You mentioned the highs, the lows, the roller coaster that is the entrepreneurial journey, it never ends. No matter how good or how bad it is, it's going to get better and it's also going to get worse. It's never going to change. There were plenty of opportunities we could have thrown in the towel, gone in and done something else. Perseverance is ultimately why I believe so many of the big businesses that have been featured as incredible startups and all of that are here today. The thing that I really see consistently, time and time again in Midwest built companies is hardiness and the value of actually providing value. The investors in the Midwest, they want to see revenue they want to see companies that are growing with expanding contracts and not just fluff and word of mouth and promises.  PHIL:  (Comment on perseverance and give closing remarks) ||ROI MUSIC|| MATT: So let's recap, ideas can start from a million different problems. For Matt, his was the annoyance of driving hundreds of miles to look at properties, only to be disappointed. They may seem super basic, but we have to remember that our ideas are not too simple. Once we lock that down in our minds, we need to turn criticism of why it won't work or why something already exists into questions our product could answer. Look at the flaws to the current solution in the market and figure out how our idea could fix those issues. Second, it's extremely important to slow down and take our time by doing extensive market research. From focus groups, to meetings with industry professionals, take time to really know what the market needs. Third, once we start moving the ball down the field, we have to drown out the noise. Knowing why we're starting this business or idea helps to silence the distractions. This will identify who to bring in and who to walk away from; what conference or hang out to explore and which ones to pay no attention to – because at the end of the day, we're trying to build a business and we dictate how it comes to fruition. Fourth, once we get our idea going, it's important to hone in on a super specific market segment. It's easy for us to answer why the whole world could use it, but the reality is the whole world is not ready for it. Mastering how we market to a specific segment makes widening our reach a whole lot easier in the long run. And finally, the 5th and most important key take-a-way to bringing your business to life is get ready to persevere. The entrepreneurial journey is a roller coaster. There's guaranteed to be highs and guaranteed to be lows. We wear many hats as this grows and hit major setbacks. However, what separates companies who make it and those that don't is the willingness to push through. This will take years, and quite frankly, will take the life of your organization because even well-established companies still hit major setbacks. If you enjoy our podcast, we would love your help. #85 - Confidence Matters: Strength Training's Greatest Benefit Isn't What You Think

Barbell Logic

Most people don't think about the emotional benefits of weight lifting, or how exercise can build confidence, when they step into a gym. Yet it is perhaps the most transformative benefit of strength training. Today Matt and Scott share stories of how strength training has transformed their own sense of self-confidence, as well as that of their clients.   For Matt strength training brought him a sense of confidence as a young man, where he struggled as a small, timid late -bloomer in high school. Later in life training became a way to refocus his addictive tendencies toward more positive goals, and gave him the courage to leave his teaching career and pursue a more meaningful path as a coach and business owner. Scott, on the other hand, was seeking a way to get the fire back, to look and feel like the person he wanted to be after years of neglecting his physical fitness. He was also seeking a way to live a more virtuous life, in an Aristotelian sense, applying voluntary hardship to an otherwise comfortable middle class American life to cultivate virtue.   For Sybil, Matt's 83 year old client who joined the podcast in episode #24, strength training meant regaining the confidence to go and check her mail every afternoon, the confidence to climb sets of stairs without worrying about falling. And the ability to walk without help. For Scott's young man who completed his first session with a 15lb squat, it's the confidence to tackle a big challenge in front of strangers even when dealing with social anxiety.   Strength training is not the only thing that builds confidence and cultivates virtue, but it's probably the most general and approachable thing. Rock climbing and running marathons are certainly voluntary hardship, but Sybil can't do those. Neither could Matt's 13 year old daughter. But both can strength train.   Connect With Matt Matt on Instagram Starting Strength Online Coaching — Matt’s website Matt on Facebook Matt on Twitter Connect With Scott Scott on Instagram Silver Strength – Scott’s website Scott on Facebook Scott on Twitter Connect With the Show Barbell Logic on Twitter Barbell Logic on Instagram The Website Barbell Logic on Facebook barbelllogicpodcast@gmail.com

Matt Sheppard is the Chief Operating Officer of The Hummus & Pita Co., a fast-casual Mediterranean concept geared toward national expansion. Before stepping into this current position, Sheppard held multiple senior leadership roles at McAlister’s Deli, including Vice President of Operations for Franchise Operations and Senior Director of Company Operations.   Key Takeaways:   [0:27] Today’s episode is brought to you by Franchise 5! The key to long-term success is through smart, strategic growth. To learn more about this program, head over to FranchiseEuphoria.com/Franchise5. [0:58] Our episode today features Matt Sheppard, the COO of The Hummus and Pita Co. Matt leads the company’s franchising efforts and today he sheds light on the methods they used to expand at a manageable and strategic rate. [3:15] Matt gives an overview of The Hummus and Pita Co. and gives insight on what makes this concept so unique when compared to other fast casual restaurants out there. [6:20] Before getting started with The Hummus and Pita Co., Matt moved through the ranks at various franchise systems. [8:07] Matt views franchisees as an additional partner who is well-qualified to be running a segment of the franchisor’s business. You don’t just want to get numbers, but someone who is like-minded and will run your business well. [10:45] It is so important to flush out your concept before franchising. Even if people are breaking down your door wanting to join your concept, you are doing them a disservice by not making sure your foundation is well built. [12:24] When your concept is thriving, people will come to you for the opportunity to get involved as a franchisee, even if you aren’t yet offering franchises. [12:50] The Hummus and Pita Co. has developed a branding strategy that involves Area Developer Agreements where they sell their franchises 5 locations at a time, which is where they get their target of 100 franchises in a year. [14:45] With an Area Developer Agreement, you agree to open a certain amount of franchise locations over a definitive timeline, but you don’t necessarily have to have each specific location mapped out when you sign on. [16:29] For Matt, the biggest surprises in franchising has been overcoming the growth phases. Sometimes you have to realize that when you have a plan in place and then you get franchisees who open the doors, you may have to admit that things need restructured a bit and accommodate for those changes. [17:59] The ideal franchisee for The Hummus and Pita Co. is someone with an entrepreneurial spirit while also being able to navigate the operational challenges that come with franchising. Momentum for the Entrepreneurial Personality Type (EPT)

Mighty Blue On The Appalachian Trail: The Ultimate Mid-Life Crisis

Matt Philippi is not currently looking to do a thru-hike of the AT. For Matt, biting off sections is a satisfying way to de-stress from his job. He contacted me to talk about the Chesapeake & Ohio (C&O) Canal Towpath. It is quite some towpath, running from Washington DC to Cumberland MD and measuring over 184 miles. I had previously intended speaking with Matt but I dropped the ball on that, so it was good to hear from him again. This time, we combined his C&O hike with his experiences hiking the AT in sections. Matt shared a link to the C&O Canal Towpath. https://www.nps.gov/choh/index.htm. If you'd like to know more about this trail, or indeed, section-hiking the Appalachian Trail, email me and Matt will be happy to respond to your questions. As you can see from the waterfall below, it certainly has some great sights. Matt completed the hike with his work colleague and is as proud of his "summit" picture as I am of my own on Katahdin–as he should be. You gotta know the rules to break them. Enter Matt Seigel. Growing up in Beverly Hills, Matt experienced the life we all aspire to provide for our families. One that was filled with love and possibility. He was a city kid, playing baseball, and the world was his oyster. When you have the opportunity to be whatever you desire, it may seem natural to "dream big". For Matt, there was only one thing he set out to be; a giver. As college approached, it was time to leave the bubble, and set out to discover. There, he was introduced to the love of his life, two turntables and a mixer. Music quickly became everything. It filled him with passion, creativity, and a new identity: MATTER. Becoming a DJ, and evolving to a producer, performer, band-mate, and artist, Matt gave music to the world, and was the glue that held it all together. But what happens when the glue leaves, and you want to do more than just "matter"? When you want to leave the identity you became, and discover who you really are? It's that moment where we have to tell ourselves two very hard words, "Do you". For Matt, that meant moving to NYC, to become the wrapper stuck to the gum at the bottom of a waiter's shoe in one of the greatest restaurants in the world...Yea, it's not always easy to "do you". We forget that we have to start at the bottom, and the bottom sucks. But it's those who throw their egos away, remain patient, learn, and embrace every ounce of the bottom, that make it to the top. Before we tell you how that gum wrapper became one of the most esteemed bar curators in the nation, just know that when your time does eventually come, you better be ready to hit a home run. #MamaWeMadeItConnect:@matt_seigel@mamawemadeit@anoushmoin@getrauschymamawemadeit.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Selling $12 million in stickers through his vending machines didn’t come easy. In fact, Matt hit a very low point before working his way to this level of success. He discusses some of the lowest point in his journey, including collecting aluminum cans with his son to survive. Matt also gives us insight into how his family honors the struggles of the past in order to always remember how far they’ve come. After working so hard to dig his way out of a hole, Matt has seen many high points. One of the highlights was when they attending their very first trade show and got affirmation that what School Spirit Vending had to offer was, in fact, something of value. He also discusses the feeling of gratitude and pride he has knowing that he’s able to pay cash for college tuition so his kids don’t have to incur debt. In closing, Matt discusses a passion project, a comic book series called Marlin and Percy.
