Type 1 diabetes (T1D), is a form of diabetes in which very little or no insulin is produced by pancreas.. Insulin is a hormone required for the body to use blood sugar. With no treatment the blood sugar in your body will remain high. The common symptoms are frequent urination, increased thirst, increased hunger, and weight loss. Some people may experience additional symptoms such as blurry vision, tiredness, and poor wound healing. Symptoms may develop in just a few weeks. The cause of type 1 diabetes is unknown. It is believed to involve genetic and environmental factors. Risk factors include having a family member with type 1 diabetes. The mechanism of origination involves autoimmune destruction of the insulin producing beta cells that produce insulin in the pancreas. Diabetes is diagnosed by testing the level of sugar or glycated hemoglobin (HbA1C) in the blood. Type 1 diabetes can be determined from type 2 by testing for the presence of autoantibodies. Crohn's Disease is an inflammatory bowel disease Can affect any part of the GI tract from the mouth to the anus, but most commonly affects the end of the small bowel (ileum) and the beginning of the colon Can affect the entire thickness of the bowel wall Inflammation of the intestine can “skip,” or leave normal areas in between patches of diseased intestine IBD affects an estimated 3 million Americans. Men and women are equally likely to be affected by Crohn's disease. The disease can occur at any age, but Crohn's disease is most often diagnosed in adolescents and adults between the ages of 20 and 30. Studies have shown that between 1.5 percent and 28 percent of people with IBD have a first-degree relative, such as a parent, child, or sibling, who also has one of the diseases. Even though there is genetic component associated with increased risk of IBD, it is impossible to predict who may get Crohn's disease based on family history. Crohn's disease can affect people from all ethnic backgrounds. The disease is more common in Caucasians, though the rates of Crohn's disease have increased among Hispanics and Asians in recent years. Key Injury and Violence Data "Injuries and violence affect everyone, regardless of age, race, or economic status. In the first half of life, more Americans die from violence and injuries — such as motor vehicle crashes, falls, or homicides — than from any other cause, including cancer, HIV, or the flu. This makes injury the leading cause of death among persons 1-44. Injury- and violence-related deaths are only part of the problem Each year 214,000 people die from injury—1 person every 3 minutes.1 But these deaths are on the tip of the iceberg. Each year, millions of people are injured and survive. They are faced with life-long mental, physical, and financial problems. 2.8 million people were hospitalized due to injuries in 20152 27.6 million people were treated in an emergency department for injuries in 20152 Injury and violence also has an alarming economic toll. The total costs of injuries and violence in the United States was $671 billion in 2013. The costs associated with fatal injuries was $214 billion while nonfatal injuries accounted for over $457 billion.3" Reference https://www.cdc.gov/injury/wisqars/overview/key_data.html --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thehealthflo/message
