Welcome to 60 Questions. In this series, we will be interviewing different medical specialists to give our audience a better idea of what it is like to specialize in a certain field within the workers' compensation industry. In this episode we speak to Dr. Kojo A. Mario, an Orthopaedic surgeon with fellowship-training in Adult Reconstruction. His areas of expertise include minimally-invasive total knee arthroplasty, direct-anterior total hip arthroplasty, minimally-invasive partial knee arthroplasty, complex revision hip and knee arthroplasty, and rapid rehabilitation protocols for faster recovery after surgery. His philosophy with patients is to treat them all as if they were his family members, and he chose this specialty so he could change lives. Dr. Marfo was born in Koforidua, Ghana to a father who was a pediatrician and a mother who was a registered nurse. After leaving Ghana at the age of five, he and his family immigrated to the United States. He grew up in Sicklerville, NJ where he graduated from Timber Creek Regional High School as the class valedictorian. He then attended Villanova University and graduated with Magna Cum Laude Honors. While attending Howard University College of Medicine, Dr. Marfo was inducted into the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. He then completed a rigorous five-year Orthopaedic surgery residency at Howard University Hospital, where he served as Administrative Chief Resident and was recognized as having the best operative skills at graduation. He later completed an additional year of advanced training in Adult Reconstruction at the world-renowned Joint Implant Surgeons (JIS) Orthopedics fellowship in New Albany, OH. During his fellowship year, he learned efficient, innovative, and evidence-based surgical techniques from some of the best hip and knee surgeons in the world. His professional memberships include The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), The American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS), and the J. Robert Gladden Orthopaedic Society (JRGOS). He is well respected by his peers, and his patients frequently compliment him on his excellent bedside manner and congeniality. He was twice an Orthopaedic patient himself due to Achilles and Patellar tendon ruptures, so he empathizes well with his patients. He has multiple publications about hip and knee arthroplasty as well as various other topics in Orthopaedic Surgery. He continues to read up on the latest literature in the field, and tailors his practice to the knowledge ascertained from evidence-based medicine. Outside of Orthopaedics, his hobbies include football, basketball, chess, swimming, traveling, and spending time with family and friends. Need to schedule an appointment? Sign up here to be considered! ***** Have you ever wondered what exactly program directors are looking for from your residency application? Our guest for this episode Dr. Enaka Yembe, in an interview we conducted some time ago, is here to provide you with all the practical tips you can employ to make your application stand out. Having both been through the application process herself and also having served as a faculty member, she offers a unique perspective to IMG's like you! Board certified in the field of family medicine, Cameroonian-born Dr. Enaka Yembe completed a Bachelor (Honors) Degree in Biochemistry in Nigeria and medical school in The University of Milan, Italy. She did an internship in Transitional Medicine in Howard University Hospital in Washington DC and then her Family Medicine Residency training at LSU Conway Hospital in Monroe, Louisiana and was nominated Resident of the Year in 2005. Here is some of the advice she offers for the residency application and interview process: Focus on your strengths and use them to show that you are a capable candidate. Try not to come across as if you are asking for help or begging for a position. Be confident! Don't overthink the process, but be very deliberate. Know your CV! Be prepared to answer any possible questions. Do research on the program you're interviewing into, in order to anticipate what kinds of questions they may ask. If you don't know the answer, don't be afraid to admit it. Offer to get back to the interviewer when you find the correct response. Your personal statement should be a brief biography, where mentioning relevant clinical experience in the US is an asset. Do not include too many personal stories and anecdotes. The personal statement should be concise. Review your personal statement professionally for grammar and spelling errors. For your residency, consider rural areas. They can offer you opportunities that may not be available in more urban ones. Finally, here are some inspirational tidbits to guide you along your journey: Do not be discouraged. Anything can be accomplished with persistence. Do not give yourself a plan B, focus on your goal and do the work to achieve it. Be committed to preparing for the USMLE exam. Make the investment in time and resources. Focus also on test-taking strategies. You can reach out to Dr. Yembe on her website, facebook and instagram. "The only thing worse than being blind, is having sight but no vision." Helen Keller "Glaucoma is called the silent thief of sight...because when you have elevated eye pressure, and it's damaging your eyes, you don't feel it. It can make you lose 90 to 100% of your vision before you notice it." Dr. Daniel La Roche While Helen Keller speaks to the vision with which we approach growing older, in today's conversation we focus on loss of sight vision. It is critical to prevent those vision disorders that become an increasing worry as we personally age, or as we take care of others who are losing their sight. A 2020 survey of blindness in people aged 50 years and older found that globally the second most common cause of blindness was glaucoma, affecting 3.6 million people. Today I talk with glaucoma specialist, Dr. Daniel Laroche, Director of Glaucoma Services and president of Advanced Eye Care of New York. He is a clinical assistant professor of ophthalmology with the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Medical Center. Dr. LaRoche received his bachelor's degree from New York University, and his medical doctorate with honors in research, from Weill Cornell University Medical College, he completed his medical internship at Montefiore Hospital, his ophthalmology residency at Howard University Hospital in Washington DC and his glaucoma fellowship at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary with Glaucoma Associates of New York, specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma We discuss types of glaucoma, the prevalence in different ethnic groups, and the importance of annual eye checkups to recognize, prevent or treat the major causes of blindness. Cataracts, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy affected 21 million people > 51 globally in this 2020 survey (https://doi.org/10.1016/S2214-109X(20)30489-7) As well as your annual eye test, lifestyle habits, exercise, good nutrition, sleep and meditation are important in preserving eye health.  We also discussed the powerful daily supplement I take to protect my eyes, especially the vulnerable macula area. If you've seen the banners in the Carmody Center, you likely know Gonzaga had one of its more memorable football seasons in 1959 that culminated with a City Title. But unless you were there, you probably don't know the crazy sequence of events from November 22, to November 27th. Three football games in six days! All at the legendary Griffith Stadium (where Howard University Hospital is today). Wait until you hear about the round robin tournament, the tie-breakers, and finally a draw from a hat decided who would face the vaunted Eastern Ramblers. Quite a few future College and NFL Stars would play that week, including our guests from Gonzaga's Class of 1960: Jon Morris (15 years AFL/NFL Lineman 7 time All Pro selection), Darryl Hill (recruited by Lee Corso to join the Maryland Terrapins in 1963 becoming the first African-American college football player in the South). Also joining the Zoom are teammates Charles Shields, Henry Partridge, and Brendan O'Neill, Sr. All these guys were great friends who loved being around each other, and playing hard for each other. With the Gonzaga Smoker coming up, we also asked about their classmate, the late Stu Long '60. For information about this years in person gathering click here. Epilogue: 1959 was a different time to be sure. The 1954 Brown v Board of Education ruling made school segregation illegal, but five years later, progress was slow. Gonzaga was ahead of most prep schools of that era, as Dr. Gabe Smith '54 became the first African American to graduate from Eye Street. Gabe paved the way for young men like Darryl Hill '60 to feel welcomed at Gonzaga. Hill would go on to break the ACC football color barrier at Maryland. The City Championship game in basketball continues to this day, but the City Title football game was discontinued after race riots broke out following the 1962 game. The integrated but mostly white St. John's team won against an outmatched Eastern team. With over 50,000 in attendance at D.C. Stadium (later renamed RFK), 400 people were injured. D.C. area writers like John Manasso (1994) and Dave McKenna (2011) both wrote compelling pieces that looked back at the 1962 game and wondered if the City Title Football game would be revived. Click the links to read on more. Thanks to Will Morris '67 for his research assistance in putting this episode together. ------ As mentioned at the end of the episode: We want to hear from you! For our Christmas week episode, we want to include your voices sharing Christmas greetings. Use your voice memo device, record this: Hey, this is ____________ from the Class of ___ wishing all my Gonzaga friends a Merry Christmas from _________ (where u live) (feel free to ad lib if you like and name check some classmates) then send the voice memo to podcast@gonzaga.org Thanks!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

She understands policy, is adept at building coalitions and is both smart and passionate about education reform.”  Courtney is a graduate of DC Public Schools and received her B.A. in Political Science in 2000 from Beloit College. Twitter hasn't cut off access, but the ACLU's press release notes the social media network has taken steps to rein in Geofeedia. ---- Finally, it looks like billionaire investor Peter Thiel has alienated himself from a major diversity and inclusion partner after he donated $1.25 million to Donald Trump, days after Trump was caught on tape making lewd comments about sexually assaulting women.
