Today on Native America Calling, we'll look back on the life of P-22 and get an overview of how some tribes view mountain lions with tribal secretary Kimberly Johnson (Gabrieliño Tongva from the San Gabriel Band of Mission Indians), Alan Salazar (Fernandeño Tataviam Band of Mission Indians), tribal elder on the elder's council and traditional storyteller; and Dr. Christina Swindall (Gabrieleño), secretary for the Gabrieleño Band of Mission Indians–Kizh Nation.

She speaks of her craft, her journey from Austria and why she chose Venice. As we turned into Gabriele's courtyard we found her sitting at a large wooden desk by her shop window, wearing a work apron, and smiling. A shoe was jammed between her knees as she filed the base of it. In front of her were a wide selection of hammers, tapes, knives and glues.Leather ribbons were stapled on the walls and dozens of wooden handled tools were slotted inside their curves. Above her head, suspended from the ceiling, was a forest of wooden shoe lasts.Gabriele studied at Cordwainers College in London, and in Paris at the Centre Formation Technologique Grégoire for saddlery. She honed her skills over ten years working throughout Europe before she came to Italy and made her home in Venice.Every July Gabriele directs the shoemaking workshop of the Salzburg Festival making shoes to measure for opera singers and actors to support their performances. She talks us through the process of creating the perfect shoe: from measuring the client, crafting the shoe, to the final fitting. Looking for a new book suggestion? Ian Hauck, head Reference & Adult Services at Troy Public Library, shares three interesting options: "The Farmer's Lawyer" (Sarah Vogel, 2022) tells how an attorney creatively used the law to help people keep their family farms. "The Bright Ages: A New History of Medieval Europe" (Gabriele & Perry, 2021) shows that what is often called the Dark Ages was actually a period of extensive trade interaction among cultures. "How Do We Relationship?" (Tamifull, various translators, 2020, 2021, 2022) is a series of Manga books exploring the process and challenges of developing a relationship. Upcoming activities include workshops on crafting earrings, star ornaments, and felt stocking ornaments. For details and registration, visit www.thetroylibrary.org.

Gabriele traded chemistry for corporate life, then traded corporate life for Chipotle, but his greatest trade involves a homemade Roman-style pizza topped with potatoes. He got homemade cocktails in return for that first pie, charmed the internet with a series of pizza barters, and now delights customers at his NYC shop: Unregular Pizza. With incredible pizza by Salvatore Gagliardo and knockout branding by Paola Sinisgalli, this shop packs a ton of flavor into a 500-square-foot space. Listen in for the business skill that matters more than money, the thing every successful restaurant owner knows how to do, and a spicy take on the pizza capital of the world.

Another energetic, entertaining show with Serge! Serge Doré with his daughter Gabriele. Photo: JoAnn Actis-Grande Portsmouth Herald Serge Doré, importer of French wine (and American via Quebec…he's a man of many identities and a worldliness we can only aspire to!) and popular podcast favorite, joins us to talk about Beaujolais, one of his favorite regions. Like all the French regions with which he works, Serge has seen the ups and downs of Beaujolais and has stuck around through a lot in working with the producers here. In the show, Serge takes us through the evolution of the region. He details the rise and fall of the Beaujolais Nouveau craze, the aftermath, and the outstanding recent history of the region. He shares stories of producers he imports and gives us inside dirt. Here are the topics we cover: Serge began working in Beaujolais in 1979. He tells us about the region then and what it was like to meet the famed Georges Duboeuf and learn about Beaujolais from him. We discuss the phenomenon of Beaujolai Nouveau and how it was the rise and fall of the region (and how the crus are responsible for the rebirth of Beaujolais). We discuss the three main areas of Beaujolais: the basic Beaujolais AOP in the south, the Beaujolais-Villages AOP, mainly in the north, and the 10 Beaujolais Crus, all in the north. We discuss why soil and location matters so much in this area of the world and give ideas on the character of some of the crus: Regnie, Saint-Amour, Chiroubles, Brouilly, Cote de Brouilly, Fleurie, Chenas, and Julienas, Morgan and Moulin-a-Vent Older map from Beaujolais.com Serge describes the scenery, culture, and people of Beaujolais in a way only he can! It sounds like we all need to get there ASAP! Serge opines on how Burgundy and Beaujolais are different and the relationship between them. We discuss Serge's producers in Beaujolais and how they are part of the exclusive Terroirs Originels group (list of producers is here). His portfolio includes: Jean-Michel Dupré, Lucien Lardy, Laurent Gauthier, Pascal Aufranc, and Patrick Tranchand (you can get them in New Hampshire and Massachusetts or order them online) This is a DELICIOUS wine!!! We discuss the dynamic producers of Beaujolais, how they are coping with climate change, and Serge's advice for enjoying beautiful Beaujolais! Go to Serge Doré Selections to learn more and find out where you can get these beautiful wines! ____________________________________________________ Thanks to our sponsors this week: Wine Spies uncovers incredible wines at unreal prices - on Zinfandel, Barolo, Champagne...you name it - up to 75% off!
