Season FOUR Episode FIVE of the Your Story Our Fight® podcast welcomes Sheba Family Zaman. As a computer scientist, Sheba has spent the last 20 years working in a technical software role with the quality department of pharmaceutical and life science companies. Her role spans from pre-sales technical information to professional services post-sale with the goal of digitizing critical data that can affect patient safety. She speaks regularly at industry conferences on data integrity and contamination control strategies for aseptic drug manufacturers. She was recently President of non-profit organization – the Parenteral Drug Association, SouthernCalifornia Chapter – for an elected term of 2 years. It is an educational organization dedicated to the connection of science, people, and regulation in a non-bias platform. In June of 2006, Dr. Dan Wallace diagnosed Sheba with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus and Nephritis following struggles with frequent fevers, joint/muscle pain, debilitating fatigue, visibly swollen lymph nodes, and hair loss. Born and raised in Montréal, she soon moved to Southern California to be closer to her family and support system. After grappling with the side effects of strong medications and some tough love counseling from her sister, she started to take her health into her own hands and has spent the last decade avidly reading and educating herself on Lupus and optimal health. Today, Sheba lives in Santa Monica and leads a very active lifestyle as a certified yoga instructor, scuba diver, tennis player, skier, beach volleyball player, runner, and global adventure traveler. She is now working to give back to the community and advocate for Lupus.

Vinetta started her healing journey back in 2013, after struggling with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, Sjogren's syndrome, chronic fatigue syndrome and other associated conditions since 1998. She shares with me how she healed herself, what her Rheumatologist shared with her and how she found that the illnesses were serving her. 00:00 Introduction 01:02 Healing Lupus 08:12 Lightbulb moment 14:07 Interesting visit with Rheumatologist 19:50 Hydroxychloroquine information 22:49 Lupus as a barometer 29:07 Holding shame for illness 35:06 Group support 38:06 Do you want to get well? Vinetta´s bio and contact information. Having failed to conquer her condition, she sought the support of a Naturopath. It was the first time she had been able to really speak candidly about the difficulties she had been facing with the debilitating aspects of the disease, particularly the lack of energy. With the help of her naturopath she was able to review her diet and lifestyle and look at natural remedies that would help support her. The main culprit seemed to be gluten, once this was removed a gradual increase in energy returned and she noticed a significant reduction in phlegm and throat issues. The diet was just the springboard and created the right ecosystem to look at her life holistically. Vinetta trained with a Reiki master and started practicing Reiki regularly to help heal the less visible aspects of her condition, she began to listen daily to Louise Hay and her “You can heal your life” philosophy, as well as dipping into self-help books, practising yoga, kinesiology treatments and meditation practice. Fast forward to 2024, going against medical advice in a bid to free her body from the toxins of over 20 years of taking medications, Vinetta weaned herself off medications for good. Today, Vinetta no longer takes any medications, and her Rheumatologist was quite shocked and confused by the transformation in her health and reluctantly confirmed that the disease is in remission. Years of battling with joint pains, Sjogren's syndrome, joint swelling, gut issues and chronic fatigue are finally a thing of the past. She now has energy to live a full and more rewarding life including running a cosmetic and homecare business with her husband. https://www.linkedin.com/in/vinettabrewdirectorregulatorycompliancehere2grow/

They share some clinical features like tall stature, long fingers, scoliosis, high arched pallet, chest wall deformities, joint hypermobility, and lens dislocation. Marfans is caused by a mutation in the FBN1 gene, resulting in defective fibrillin-1, and the main complication is aortic root dilation. Homocystinuria is a metabolic disorder caused by a defect in homocysteine breakdown, leading to elevated levels of homocysteine, and the main complication is thrombosis. Ehlers-Danlos is caused by a deficiency in type III collagen, and the main complication is vascular rupture. Marfans has an upward lens dislocation, homocystinuria has a downward lens dislocation, and Ehlers-Danlos has hyperextensible skin and joint hyperextensibility. Marfans usually presents in teens, homocystinuria in children, and Ehlers-Danlos in young adults. Patient presentations: Marfans - scoliosis, long fingers, and caved in chest wall in a tall teen; Homocystinuria - developmental delay, long fingers, and tall stature in a child; Ehlers-Danlos - recurrent bruising, hyper extensible skin, and joint hyperextensibility in a young adult.

Despite a prevalence of over 50% among patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), neuropsychiatric symptoms of SLE (NP-SLE), including anxiety and movement disorders, have not been well understood. The paucity of data examining underlying mechanisms is what spurred the work of Carla M. Cuda, PhD, pointing to microglia as a driver of disease.Dr. Cuda, who is assistant professor of Rheumatology at Northwestern Medicine, and other Northwestern Medicine investigators were the first to show that microglial expression of disease-associated microglia (DAM)-associated genes correlates with the severity of hippocampal- and cerebellar-associated behavioral deficits in an NP-SLE model prior to overt systemic disease. While DAM have been extensively studied in Alzheimer's disease, no studies have specifically examined DAM in NP-SLE, until now.
