Welcome to the seventh episode of Season 5 of the WAB podcast. In this episode, we were joined by four Grade 8 students - Adrien, Elsa, Gustav, and Veronica, along with their Maths teachers Tracey Brown and Karen Jewett. Together, they had a comprehensive discussion about maths learning in WAB's Middle School, diving into the differences between self-directed learning and teacher-directed learning. The students also highlighted their favorite aspects of learning maths at WAB and the reasons behind them.   Tracey provided an overview of the personalized maths learning in our Middle School. She emphasized how each student is a unique learner, acknowledging their diverse learning preferences, styles, and interests. She introduced that every student is paired with a math mentor with whom they regularly collaborate to craft a customized learning plan tailored to their individual needs. In their class, students are offered Teacher-Directed Learning (TDL), characterized by traditional teacher-driven instruction, and Self-Directed Learning (SDL), where students engage in small group or individual learning guided by a teacher. Regular progress check-ins occur, and math mentors aid students in making optimal learning decisions.   Grade 8 student Veronica expressed her appreciation for SDL, emphasizing the freedom to progress at her own pace. She noted the flexibility to study independently, irrespective of others' levels of understanding. Her peer Gustav highlighted the freedom of choice in SDL, and he shared he personally favored TDL.  In terms of learning environments, 8th Grader Elsa shared her fondness for studying in the booth, a designated space where students can gather around a table to create a learning-focused atmosphere. She mentioned this helped her focus on her studies, but also allowed her to also easily reach out to her peers for help.   Karen outlined the process of integrating new students into the Middle School math program, emphasizing a comprehensive onboarding process. New students are paired with a partner and work closely with a math mentor to navigate the transition. The school also makes an effort to understand students' prior learning backgrounds to identify similarities and differences, ensuring a smooth adjustment to the personalized learning plans and meeting individual needs.  When discussing their aspirations for High School, Veronica expressed interest in Advanced Calculus, Elsa leaned towards Geometry, and Adrien emphasized the significance of giving his best effort and remaining open to diverse learning opportunities as he progresses in his mathematical journey.  Tune in to listen to more student insights on how they learn maths and how their teachers support them.

How can we make the world better and fairer for all? With Professor Sir Simon Baron-Cohen from the University of Cambridge and the Autism Research Centre

In this episode of the Data Malarkey podcast, data storyteller Sam Knowles is joined by Sir Simon Baron-Cohen, Professor of Developmental Psychopathology at the University of Cambridge, where he also runs the Autism Research Centre. Simon has been working in the field of autism for approaching 40 years and is one of the world's leading authorities on the subject.   Since the mid-1980s, the research he's led and undertaken has led him to advance several different, complementary theories of the condition including: the mind-blindness theory, the prenatal sex steroid theory, and the empathising-systemising theory of autism and typical sex differences.   Some corners of autism research have a somewhat shady and disreputable reputation for their misuse of data; for drawing conclusions about the general population from tiny sample sizes that the data could not warrant. Indeed, it was in the wake of the MMR scandal that the charity Sense About Science was founded in the early 2000s – to encourage researchers to present their findings responsibly and the media to report them responsibly – and Sense About Science's director, Tracey Brown, was a recent guest on Data Malarkey.   By contrast with the shady stuff, Simon's research has been a shining light of empiricism and evidence-based, data-driven truth, with sample sizes sometimes in the tens or hundreds of thousands. His 2018, empathising-systemising study famously collected data from 36,000 autistic people and 600,000 non-autistic people.   Described by the medical journal The Lancet as “a man with extraordinary knowledge … his passionate advocacy for a more tolerant, diverse society, where difference is respected and cultivated, reveals a very human side to his science” it is our honour to welcome Simon to Data Malarkey. A very fitting, very high-profile end to Season Five, a season bookended by two great Cambridge minds, as we started with Professor Sir David Spiegelhalter.   To secure Simon as a guest on Data Malarkey, I'm delighted to say I had to drop my son Max's name. At the time of recording, Max had recently hosted Simon at an excellent event run by the recently-reborn Cambridge Psychology Society, of which Max is now President. At the university, he is studying Psychological & Behavioural Sciences. #proudfather   EXTERNAL LINKS Profile of Simon on The Lancet – Psychiatry site https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanpsy/article/PIIS2215-0366(15)00461-7/fulltext   The Autism Research Centre https://www.autismresearchcentre.com   The extraordinary output of 750+ articles from the Autism Research Centre on PubMed https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/?term=simon+baron-cohen&sort=date   Auticon, the social enterprise on a mission to improve the employment prospects of neurodivergent people, whose board Simon advises https://auticon.com/uk/     To find out what kind of data storyteller you are, complete our data storytelling scorecard at https://data-storytelling.scoreapp.com. How can we ensure public, political, and media debate is based on evidence? With Tracey Brown, OBE, Director of Sense About Science

The Data Malarkey Podcast

In this episode of the Data Malarkey podcast, data storyteller Sam Knowles is joined by Tracey Brown, the director of Sense About Science, a role she's held since its founding in 2002. Scientific evidence can be a powerful tool for insight, accountability, and change. Yet in public life – particularly in politics and the media – debate often revolves around claims based on shoddy or misrepresented evidence.   Sense About Science exists to change all that. The charity challenges the misrepresentation of science and evidence in public life and intervenes – often in partnership with others. It holds those responsible to account, and runs highly impactful, evidence-based campaigns. Under Tracey's leadership, Sense About Science has assessed the transparency of many government departments, and championed peer review beyond academia – especially with the public, helping people make sense of science and evidence. In June 2017, Tracey was awarded an OBE for services to science.   Our conversation was recorded remotely, via the medium of Riverside.fm, on 26 July 2023.   Thanks to Joe Hickey for production support.   Podcast artwork by Shatter Media.   Voice over by Samantha Boffin.   Tracey reveals how the role of Sense About Science has evolved in the past 20 years. It started life with a baptism of fire and a cauldron of front page stories, with academics, activists, companies, and government departments battling it out. The issues it tackled included Andrew Wakefield's bogus claims on the links between MMR and autism, mobile phones apparently frying your brain, and GM crops said to be accelerating the demise of healthy food. The truth, in each case, was rather different, and Sense About Science was in the vanguard of sharing real evidence, calmly and dispassionately.   We focus on data science and what can and should be done to make it not only palatable but also comprehensible to an uninformed lay public, starting the Sense About Science's 2018 guide on the topic. The guide asks (and answers) three key questions: where did it come from, on what assumptions does it rest, and can it bear the weight of the expectations we heap upon it?   Tracey contends that statisticians and researchers need a change of perspective. They need to think of themselves less as producing evidence and more as answering questions that matter to society. This requires them to reframe their perspective and put themselves in the public's shoes. She also argues – elegantly and persuasively – that Big Data is often not better data, and highlights both huge potential positives (and equally huge potential negatives) offered by the new generation of AI tools. The negatives are less ‘Skynet' and more banal error, rolled out at scale.   Tracey also details her organisation's global AllTrials campaign, designed to ensure that data from  every study conducted are reported in the public domain, not just those that bring benefits and advantages to the company, research institution, or compound that benefit from positive research outcomes. The campaign highlights researchers' legal, moral, and ethical responsibilities and is bringing about genuine change.   EXTERNAL LINKS Sense About Science website – https://senseaboutscience.org The charity on Twitter – https://twitter.com/senseaboutsci Tracey's LinkedIn profile – https://www.linkedin.com/in/tracey-brown-42b2788/     To find out what kind of data storyteller you are, complete our data storytelling scorecard at https://data-storytelling.scoreapp.com. What do farmers in Kenya, fishers in the Philippines and teenagers in Boston have in common? They all need to balance risks when making decisions ranging from seed choice after considering predicted rainfall to life vest and chance of shark attacks to social distancing and emotional impacts. Understand risk is the focus of today's episode of Stats+Stories with guest Tracey Brown.  Brown is the director of Sense about Science since 2002. Under her leadership, the charity has translated the case for sound science and evidence into popular campaigns to urge scientific thinking among the public and the people who answer to them. It has launched important initiatives including AllTrials, a global campaign for the reporting of all clinical trial outcomes; and the Ask for Evidence campaign, which engages the public in requesting evidence for claims. In 2010, the Times named Tracey as one of the ten most influential figures in science policy in Britain and in 2014 she was recognized by the Science Council for her work on evidence-based policy making. In June 2017 Tracey was made an OBE for services to science, and most recently in 2020 she was made an honorary Professor at UCL in the Department of Science, Technology and Engineering in Public Policy. She is also the author of a recent article in Significance magazine describing “What is risk know-how?”

During the Covid-19 pandemic, unprecedented numbers of people engaged with evidence behind government policy. Many had to interpret and implement government decisions while making trade-offs with other priorities, like protecting children, cancer care provision or running businesses. Based on testimony from expert witnesses and the experiences of people from a broad range of sectors across the UK, Sense About Science's What Counts? inquiry is a major new study looking at what society needed to know and how well the UK government was able to respond. The report's findings, including a NatCen survey of how the public engaged with government evidence, was presented Tracey Brown, Director of Sense about Science, followed by remarks from Greg Clark MP, Chair of the Science and Technology Committee, and a panel discussion with Paul Wilson, Policy Director at the Federation of Small Businesses. The event was chaired by Tom Sasse, Associate Director at the Institute for Government. The report What Counts? In 1981, the gravedigger turned lorry driver from Yorkshire was found guilty of murdering 13 women and attempting to murder seven others between 1975 and 1980. He was serving a whole life term when he died on 13 November 2020 aged 74.The Six O'clock Knock is a Psycho Killer production.Transcript[Music] This podcast contains descriptions of death and violence that some listeners may find upsetting. Hello and welcome to this special edition of the Six O'clock Knock the true crime podcast presented by me Simon Ford and me Jacques Morrell I'm a retired major crime detective and now with my friend and sparring partner we reinvestigate historic homicides on our quest to find the truth whatever that may be it was announced this morning that peter Sutcliffe alias the Yorkshire Ripper Britain's most prolific serial killer had died in jail Sutcliffe was 74 he'd been serving a whole life prison sentence for the savage murders of 13 women in and around the cities of Leeds Bradford and Manchester in the 1970s Sutcliffe had a deep-seated hatred of women he claimed that god told him to rid the streets of sex workers in fact his crimes were indiscriminate his M.O. his modus operandi was the same though blows to the head with a hammer followed by frenzied stabbing one case involves strangulation between 1975 and 1980 the Yorkshire Ripper as he was styled by the media inflicted a reign of terror on northern England for years women were afraid to go out alone after dark proposals for a women-only curfew sparked outrage coupled with the failure of the police to catch the killer that failure is the subject of two future episodes of the Six O'clock Knock why was Sutcliffe allowed to terrorize and butcher women in the dead of night with impunity how did Sutcliffe escape a police dragnet that involved hundreds of officers cost millions of pounds of public money and generated so much paperwork a police station had to be reinforced to stop it collapsing under the weight it's all the more incredible when you learn that in that terrible period Sutcliffe was questioned an astonishing nine times by detectives we've also spoken to a senior police officer who was a rookie when the Yorkshire Ripper claimed his first victim Bob Taylor was a detective constable and later a detective sergeant in the Ripper incident room he retired a few years ago as detective chief superintendent of west Yorkshire police in the 70s Taylor could only watch as the then assistant chief constable George Oldfield a hard drinking hard-bitten and hard-biting Yorkshireman botched bungled and bullied his way through the biggest manhunt in British history Bob Taylor says Oldfield's handling of the Ripper investigation was disastrous from beginning to end i think what i learned from working on the cases that George Oldfield was in charge of was uh of how not to do it there was no room for anybody to make suggestions from the lower ranks uh and there were several good suggestions i mean one of the detectives who i worked with detective constable they said why don't they look at what was known as the Canadian system which was a geographical plotting system the principle behind it was that the offender would travel to avoid detection so the first attacks were more likely to be close to home the other thing about working on the Ripper case they couldn't conceive they couldn't get their head around the fact that some of the victims could have survived and of course not recognizing that there was a massive loss of evidence one of the victims in chapel town she did the artist's impression of ‘Dave' he used the name Dave and she was just dismissed that was probably the closest picture that anybody produced of Sutcliffe when another colleague went and said i used to be a good vehicle driver Josephine Whitaker which is several park the footprints one of the boots shared everywhere they said that's what my boots were like as a heavy goods vehicle driver uh one boot used to wear out before the other and we just told get on with your work and what was our work our work was eliminating people on criteria that wasn't correct incredible there were survivors who could have identified Sutcliffe but their evidence was brushed aside Anna Rogulsky, Olive Smelt, Tracey Brown, she was a kid of 14 when Sutcliffe smashed her skull and left her for dead in a country lane Marcella Claxton dismissed because of her race and her so-called reputation Maureen Long Marilyn Moore and that business with the boot impression at one of the crime scenes there's no way when i investigated homicides that that kind of forensic evidence would have been overlooked but of course my police career came after the Yorkshire Ripper in fact the mistakes they made changed the way we investigate murder in Britain indeed that's what we do on the Six O'clock Knock we take your powers of investigation Jacques wave the evidence under my journalist's nose and go after the stories behind the headlines and wherever you are in the world there will be lots of headlines about Peter Sutcliffe the Yorkshire Ripper he remains in death Britain's most prolific serial Becoming a caregiver to a loved one who can no longer care for themselves is HARD. It is hard on resources, relationships, and our own well being. As a family caregiver, we need to grieve what was, plan for what could be, and communicate with all the support members we can. AND, that is only the start of what this honorable and difficult role entails. Joining us to navigate this difficult and often stressful conversation is Tracey Brown of Amazing Place Houston. About Tracey: Tracey Brown has served as Executive Director of Amazing Place, a faith based non-profit organization focusing on empowering lives disrupted by dementia for the past fifteen years. During her tenure she has led the organization through a $7 million campaign, Building for Generations, which enabled the organization to build their state of the art Day Program specifically designed for adults with mild to moderate dementia; engineered a name change from The Seniors Place to Amazing Place; and encouraged the organization's staff to expand programs and services for those with dementia, their caregiving families and the community resulting in the development of their Connections Program. Amazing Place is in the midst of their second campaign – the $15 million Amazing Together Campaign, which will allow the organization to expand to a second location in the West Houston/Katy area.   Tracey grew up in Chicago and Houston and graduated from the University of Texas at Austin. Sixteen years ago, she and her husband, Frank, returned to Houston. She joined Amazing Place after a career in advertising and publishing and many years in non-profit volunteer leadership. Her passion for supporting adults with dementia and their families comes from her own family experience – her maternal grandmother suffered for many years with the disease and she watched her highly successful and energetic grandfather endure tremendous stress as her primary caregiver, eventually suffering a fatal heart attack. She and Frank have five children, aged 25 to 41, in their blended family. Six years ago, Tracey lost her father and her mother (now 90) moved into their home, just as her youngest son finished his freshman year in college and returned home for the summer. Four years ago, her mother was diagnosed with dementia and multiple myeloma. As a family they are cherishing each day and learning the precious value and wonderful blessings of intergenerational living. Resources:...
