What happens when you put an erudite Canadian-Australian in a room with a verbose Australian-Canadian? This week, as TJ suffers through a department meeting at work, Seth Austin of the "hold my beer" W.A.S.T.E Mailing List joins Toby to take on the maelstrom that is HCE's defensiveness masking desperation. With perspectives on Giambattista Vico, father-son power struggles, and Oedipus Rex, we allow ourselves to be surprised by the text, where turnintaxis pop up where you least expect them. My guest for this episode is a country singer-songwriter, Drew Ryder Smith. He just released three new singles, which were delayed because of a dilemma caused by the many other Drew Smiths on streaming platforms and elsewhere. But the songs are out now and they sound great! The recording quality of this episode is quite good. Drew clearly had a nice home setup and his speaking voice is as good as it gets. Drew has been a professional songwriter for about ten years but has recently decided to return to the life of touring and releasing songs as a solo artist. His work has been recorded in many countries including the US, Canada, Ireland, Germany, and Australia, by legends like Merle Haggard, Randy Houser, Rob Snyder, Jason Charles Miller, Kevin Denney, John Schneider, and Australian-Canadian country singer Gord Bamford. Before becoming a full-time songwriter for a publishing house, Drew had it going on as a touring musician. He'd opened for Don Williams, Big & Rich, Lee Brice, and Lady A. He also opened for Merle Haggard at the Ryman Auditorium with industry executives, John Prine, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, and Keith Urban in the audience. He is the owner of Gray Sound Recording, working as a producer and senior mixing engineer, and the creator of The Before You Record Course. Drew released a song called Exes in September of 2022, which was one of the 15 most added songs for digital radio for multiple weeks following its release. He just dropped three new songs titled The Bottom Of It, Call Me Back, and Don't Wake Me Up. We talk about these songs plus: website platforms (he's used them all), his home base of Nashville, his ties to Fort Worth Texas, growing up in Tennessee, pneumonia, songwriting vocationally, touring, recording, the origins of "Robonzo", some of our favorite legendary drummers, and more. We spent quite a bit of time on pneumonia and Covid, but I only left some of that in the final edit. We may have digressed before ever touching on a music-related discussion. However, I think it was somewhat therapeutic for us both. Please enjoy my conversation with Drew Ryder Smith. How to Profit as a New Trader with a Small AccountPodcast: #403: How to Profit as a New Trader with a Small AccountIn this video:00:24 – Email from a guy who is looking at starting trading01:05 – Joining a group of like-minded successful people01:59 – Real examples from this week03:12 – Profit from other traders04:22 – Client mentions trade live on the webinar05:00 – Learn the “How To” by following other traders07:03 – Walk before you can run07:17 – Our 12th birthday is in MayHow can you profit in the Forex market if you're starting with a smaller account and you're starting out as a new trader? Let's talk about that and more right now.Hey traders, it's Andrew Mitchem here at The Forex Trading Coach with video and podcast number 403.Email from a guy who is looking at starting tradingNow, this week I've received an email from a guy over in the U.K. who's actually in the army, and he's saying, "Look, I'm looking at leaving, but I want to ensure that when I start trading, I'm actually going to make some money. How do I do that? I'm new to this, I don't know anything about it, and my concern is that when I start trading, because I'm new and I don't know what I'm doing, I'm going to lose money and I'm going to lose confidence, give up, and it's just not going to work. So can you give me some suggestions?"And I went back to him and I said, "Look, there is nothing more powerful than being involved with a group of successful people. It doesn't matter what you want to do.Joining a group of like-minded successful peopleIf you're into sports, you're going to learn how to be good at that sport, let's say, from sports groups and mentors, tutors, coaches. If you want to do good things in music, you go and join a band and you learn how to play as a group, that type of thing." And I said to him, "Look, to be honest, trading is no different. Yes, you can do it alone. Yes, you can find things online and you may or you may not eventually make it work for you. But the problem is, is that eventually question is the problem, and what can you do to ensure that?" Obviously, this guy's in the army, he's a team guy, he works hard as a group, et cetera. And I said, "Look, all you have to do is exactly the same as that, but find someone like that in trading."Real examples from this weekAnd I want to give you some real examples from this week. These are real actual trades that we've taken, because I said to him, "Look, just look at this week as an example." I said, "Well, February just gone, we had 6.2% on our daily trades, so you could have followed along with that." Because my point to him was actually about why not follow good traders and profitable people so that you're growing your account while you're learning, rather than just throwing money away on just random trades and losing trades? So from this week, we've had a trade on the weekly charts that closed out with a 4.2 to one reward to risk on the Australian-Canadian dollar. It's actually from the previous week, but it closed this week 4.2 to one. So risking half of 1% on that trade, 2.1% gain on your account. How's that for confidence, just one trade? On our forum site this week, we've had trades posted on the 12 hour, the eight hour, the six hour, the four hour, the two hour, the one hour, 30 minute charts, all profitable trades for people to follow along with. We've had daily trades that have gone well. Our breakout's gone well. We've had a trade yesterday. This was an interesting one and a prime example.Profit from other tradersAs I was putting together my weekly live webinars for clients yesterday...
So You Want to be a Scalper?Podcast: #401: So You Want to be a Scalper? In this video:00:23 – Is scalping a good idea or not?00:58 – Can we help you?01:14 – Some real trade examples03:11 – You need a good strategy to scalp04:35 – Send me an email to receive more details04:57 – Feel free to share this video and podcastSo you want to be a scalper. Is that a good idea, and can we help?Hey traders, Andrew Mitchem here at the Forex Trading Coach with video and podcast number 401.Is scalping a good idea or not?Now you want to be a scalper. Is that a good idea? Well, it depends on what type of person you are, and if you'd like looking at your charts either at a certain time each day, when you know, there's likely to be more price activity such as the European session, or maybe the US session. But also you need to be the sort of person that's willing to do that regularly. And you've got to be the sort of person that's willing to be a little bit more active on your charts. So is it a good idea? Well, it depends on you as a person, but it also depends on your strategy as in, does it work? Can we help you?And the other question is, can we help? Well, yes, absolutely we can help, because my strategy which I've been trading now for the last 14 years, works on all currency pairs and all timeframe charts. Some real trade examplesNow to give you a perfect couple of examples, just yesterday, I held my client's weekly live two hour trading room webinar. And on that webinar, we actually took two short timeframe charts. We took a trade on the 30 minute chart on the Australian Canadian dollar, and we took a trade on the Aussie Yen on the 15 minute chart. So both kind of scalping trades. They may not be like one minute charts or five minute charts, which are real scalping, but they are very short timeframe being a 15 and 30 minute chart. So pretty much what you would classify as scalping. And they were both profitable trades. We took them live, on the session, in front of my clients. The first one, the Aussie Canadian, the 30 minute chart trade, just happened to have a 10 bit stop loss, had an 18 pip profit target. Therefore it made a 1.8 to one reward to risk. Risk half of 1% of your account on that trade. Make a 0.9% almost a 1% gain. It did that in two hours. The other trade that we took was on the 15 minute timeframe on the Aussie Yen. That had a 13 pip stop loss, a 28 pip profit target. And that made a 2.1 to one reward to risk or 1.05% gain. Two trades together, half percent risk on each.So therefore total of only 1% of my account with risk on those two trades yet I made a positive plus 1.95% account gain. So almost a 2% gain just on two trades, live in front of my clients, for everybody to take, everybody to see. And 2% from one night, two trades took me what, five minutes total, just look through all the charts, see them, take them. 2% account gain. Not bad is it? Especially when you consider that's way more than the bank's going to pay me in 12 months. You need a good strategy to scalpSo can we help you? Absolutely. Certainly we can because the strategy, as I've mentioned works across all timeframe charts. You still need to have everything setting up in your favour. The probability, what we're looking for in terms of candle patterns, bounces round numbers, divergence, all those types of things that we teach, we trade and we look for. And then you have to of course have the strategy and that knowledge to be able to take that trade, all those trades at the exact right time.So can we help? Absolutely. “Azalea” is the musical duo of Benjamin and Mia Hackett, they are an Australian-Canadian couple that write, produce, and perform original music together. Before they met, Benjamin and Mia both worked on their own solo music projects, but for some reason, it always felt to them that a key ingredient was lacking in their art. Having fatefully met in 2004, the duo worked on their first songwriting project together, and the magic they created from their chemistry was undeniably great. It was then that they discovered that the secret ingredient lacking in their pieces, was each other. 16 years down the line and the duo has now released 5 studio albums, 1 live album, were named semifinalists at the 2018 International songwriting competition, and have previously been nominated at the 2018 International Acoustic Music Awards. Show Notes Joining us on the show today is the dynamic music duo of Benjamin and Mia, otherwise known as Azalea. Having been performing on cruise ships for the past one and a half years, we start the show off with the duo narrating their dramatic cruise ship experience courtesy of the COVID-19 pandemic. From being stuck at the dock for 12 days in a ship with no passengers to hopping from ship to ship until they finally booked their own plane ticket back home. Benjamin and Mia have had a challenging first-hand experience with the effect of the current global pandemic. Now with a day left until their 14-day social quarantine is over, the couple can't wait to go outside and do some grocery shopping! As they're a fairly introverted couple, when not on stage or creating new music, Benjamin and Mia are very close friends and enjoy being with their pets and their comfy home in Canada. Stay tuned as the lovely duo gives us a tour of what it's like to be performers in a cruise ship. Despite their introverted nature, Benjamin and Mia enjoy socializing with their fans before and after their performances. This, they claim, is a great way to have an intimate connection with your audience and get their personal thoughts and opinions on how they feel about your music and performance. They've enjoyed every single cruise trip and performance as this has enabled them to meet different people, cultures, and lifestyles worldwide. Something that would have otherwise been impossible to afford without their gigs. The Cruise ship contracts have also proven invaluable in terms of steady, reliable work and ample free time to work on their music writing project's on the side. And even with the current global crisis still heating up as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, this lovely couple has chosen to see the positive side of it, and thank God for the ample time that they now have to tackle their art and life projects that they've been postponing for a while. I hope you all enjoy the show and feel empowered by the message of hope and creativity that Azalea shares with all on the show today. Quotes It grows you, in such a big way, I can't even remember the person I was before I started the journey. – Mia on her experience performing in cruise ships. It's a very intimate relationship between you and the people you're performing for in a cruise ship. Consorting and getting to know them at a personal level, and what they love about your show. It's like free market research. Socializing with your audience is a great way to know what people connect within your songs and performances. This helps in improving your performance and music in general. We've seen so many different cultures, lifestyles and ways of life. This has made us realize how we're all so different, but still essentially the same. It's practically a great way to make the world smaller and make it feel like home. We take different approaches in terms of the tools and environment in order to experiment with how the general audience feels and how emotions would change when producing our songs. There's a lot of challenges to it, but it's generally a good experience. We're basking in the fact that we now have time to tackle the creative endeavors that we've always wanted to pursue – Benjamin on using the current COVID-19 social quarantine measure to their advantage. We still have milestones that we need to hit. And we feel that we'll get there eventually. We just have to keep writing, keep playing and keep being our genuine selves. We hope to create art that's meaningful to us. Because if it means something to you, then it's going to mean something to everyone else – Benjamin on their future art and music projects. If you work too much, you kind of lose your touch with creativity. Creativity comes from play. Spirit of Punk Live storytelling The final part of our two-part series of live stories we recorded in conjunction with the Spirit of Punk at the end of last year at Buck Mulligan's bar in Melbourne. The principle of Spirit of Punk is simple. All you need to do is show up and read a piece of your work no longer than the duration of a Ramones song. How easy is that? The recordings are live so there are some little mic disturbances here and there. But more than anything there is the unmistakeable courage of writers taking to the stage to read their non-fiction stories. Writers in this episode Confessions of a Boarder by Lacey Smith I came to write this piece to answer the main questions everybody asks me when I mention that I endured boarding school. Many people have an idealistic view of boarding house life: beautiful buildings, a good education, working air conditioning etc.; I felt the need to set the record straight. Lacey Smith is an Australian-Canadian writer and podcaster, currently working on her first novel. At 14 she was selling merchandise for a satanic metal band but has now put those wild days behind her. She lives in Melbourne with her long-suffering husband and their Westie, Maisie. Hell Bent by Noeleen Ginnane End 2019, nearly a wrap on my Diploma Writing/Editing, Swinburne. I’d relocated on 15 November, before which 15 June. Exhausted. Broke as a freak. ‘Provide 500 words, memoir,’ teach said, as if you could whip that up with a thought, pause and muse. I panicked, pulled out past sufferances; re-felt, altered, submitted it. ‘I’ve written since forever,’ Noeleen Ginnane tells us. ‘It kept me sane, teen years. If I hadn’t wagged school so much to write, I’d never have failed it as well as I did.’ Modestly published in Australia, and (erotica) in the U.K. and U.S., Noeleen’s ‘only recently confessed to/begun living the writer I am.’ She has been published in: I can’t Breathe - Fremantle Arts Review, The TV - Western Word, Mother In Top Gear - Perth Child Magazine, Quiet – Oz Poetic Society, Sweet Selection, Army Style, Blossoms Full Bloom, Sweatbox, Aunty Said - In The Buff (UK), Aunty Said - Best Women's Erotica (USA), Batman and The Fisherman, My Mother's Torment - Reader's Digest The Stink by Laura Wild I have terrible taste in romantic partners. This memory always makes me laugh and it’s a story I tell friends when we get bogged down. At least our pillows are clean, mate. Poorly navigating the internet one LiveLeak video at a time, Laura Wild is an Australian writer currently studying at Swinburne University of Technology. She lives in Melbourne, Victoria with her partner and the four houseplants that have managed to survive her ineffectual care. She has been published in Backstory Journal and Other Terrain Journal. Acknowledgements: Memoria is written, produced, edited and presented by Natalie V. Special thanks go to Jen Farrow for her recording tech on the night and Nic Brasch for letting us record his event. Thank you to the writers who took part in this episode: Lacey Smith, Noeleen Ginnane and Laura Wild. The stories in this episode are sound edited by Natalie Vella. Hello Canadian teen book readers! Change of authors this month - Christina Minaki's Burning the Boats launched on May 24th, but due to my personal medical problems I was unable to get together with her to tape our podcast. Look for her in one of my special summer podcasts that will be available through the CCBC's Twitter feed.Instead, I took advantage of the CCBC/TD Book Week and met up with BC author of Are You Seeing Me? and the upcoming Infinite Blue, Darren Groth, at the Hamilton Public Library. Coming in at one hour and seventeen minutes it is a longer podcast than my previous ones, with Darren and I discussing his being a Australian/Canadian author, visibility of of disabled characters, and the importance of authentic voices. Don't be surprised if you hear piano music in the background.
