Mindset & Mental Olympics for Actors | Interview with Broadway veteran, David Eggers

Over my years studying acting and musical theater as both an undergrad and in post-college classes, I was taught a lot about acting skills and critical thinking. I took voice lessons, learned how to dissect scenes, explored Alexander Technique, movement and more. But a huge missing piece of the conversation was about MINDSET and what it truly takes to go out and build a career in show business. In this episode, I'm joined by my friend and Broadway performer, David Eggers. David has performed in 10 Broadway shows and is a frequent assistant choreographer and assistant director for many Broadway & Broadway-bound shows. Currently, he is the  Assistant Professor of Musical Theatre at the University of Utah and loves helping actors navigate the theatre industry from beginning to end, while giving them the tools to succeed and thrive through the ups, downs, twists, and turns. David takes us on his journey as a struggling undergrad who had to develop mindset tools and practices to fortify his performing skills so he could keep taking the scary steps towards his dreams as a Broadway performer. He also shares some lessons he's learned during his nearly three decades in the business along with the things he does every day that have given him stamina, resilience and gratitude in a tumultuous and unpredictable career.  Follow David on Instagram!Spotlight Moments:> Actors have to play the mental Olympics in order to compete in the industry and need to have the ability to persevere and ultimately hang in there long enough to gain momentum.> If you can do anything else in addition to theatre, you should probably bring it along for the ride. > The power of journaling for problem solving, approaching challenges and determining next steps. > David shares other tools he has utilized for years to help support his mental wellbeing, self belief  and stamina as a working actor for nearly three decades. Like the show? As actors, we are brought up believing that we have to sacrifice everything if we want to ‘make it.' In today's episode, I ask you to consider how you are suffering for your art and WHY you are doing it. I also share how I've suffered for my own art and how it continues to sneak up on me at times. Spotlight Moments:> There are so many ways you may be suffering for your art and you may not even consciously recognize it.  > People pleasing and trying to be what I thought I needed to be for other people are two unexpected ways I suffered for my acting career for years and still things I struggle with. > Launching this podcast is one big way that I'm working on breaking out of the ‘pleaser' type that I've embraced for so long. > Exploring the ways in which you might be sacrificing your health or happiness for your acting endeavors isn't about beating yourself up or becoming hyper-critical. But things can start to shift when you simply take inventory and give yourself permission to be honest about how it is showing up for you. Like the show?
