Today I spoke with Mike Ganino about his new book Make a Scene, Storytelling, Stage Presence, and the Art of being Unforgettable in every Spotlight (Authors & Co., 2025) “The most powerful asset whether you want to lead a team, whether you want to pitch a deal, whether you want to close business, whether you want to interview for a new job, your most powerful asset is the way you communicate. So I would say if you're out there and you're someone who is working in the business world and you're looking at numbers and crutching things and you're under this stress, don't let your most powerful asset atrophy.” -Elite speaking coach and Former TEDx Executive Producer Mike Ganino. With his Five Stage Languages and Rapid Prototyping Protocol, Ganino reveals the exact framework he's used to train over 5,000 speakers-from bestselling authors and TED stars to Fortune 500 executives. With equal parts attitude and expertise, he teaches you to: Master the art of authentic storytelling that captivates any audience; Transform nervous energy into magnetic stage presence; Own virtual presentations with more impact than a viral TED talk; Turn everyday moments into opportunities to shine; Craft messages so compelling, people forget to check their phones. Make a Scene is for anyone tired of playing it safe and ready to own the spotlight. Whether you're a professional speaker crafting your next keynote or a leader delivering a crucial presentation, this book will help you stop shrinking and start shining. We're told to steal from those we admire, but so often, we mimic the wrong things. It's not WHAT someone does but WHY they do it (and why it works for them) which we ought to model in our own creative work and storytelling. Once we find that, we can intentionally master the craft. And this work is about exactly that: intentionality. It's practiced. Until it looks effortless (even if, for a long while, it wasn't).In this episode, Mike Ganino shares a story about his childhood and falling in love with E.T., and his understanding at the young age of 10, that stories make us feel less alone. Mike is the author of the new book, Make a Scene. He is also a keynote director, working to help others master their stage presence and storytelling, and he draws on his roots in theater and acting to help.Mike and I discuss why intentionality is everything is storytelling, how storytellers are really thought custodians, and how to craft scenes that allow audiences to connect with the emotional core of any story. And be warned: this episode gets very meta. We're two storytelling geeks talking shop about the work we love.Connect with Mike on his website and Linkedin. Ever wondered what to do if you're asked to speak about your book in public? Wonder no more—for this week, Vicky is joined by the delightful Mike Ganino, who is a brilliant public speaking coach. He works with a lot of authors and helps them to craft their message—and tell it in a compelling, entertaining, and moving manner on stage or on video. Listen in and find out all about: the 5 stage languages, the difference between writing your story and telling it with your mouth, how to avoid death by PowerPoint (and is PowerPoint even a bad thing?)—and much more! Key Takeaways: [2:15] A little bit about Mike and what he does. [3:55] What's the difference between writing on paper vs. speaking it in person? [5:15] You have to write in a way that's natural to your speaking voice. It sounds so rigid if you say your speech off of ‘formal' writing. [8:45] When on a stage, people need to feel the words that you're saying. [10:30] It's kind of boring to listen to an author read from their book. So how do you make it engaging? [12:10] There are a lot of vocal nuances you need to think about when speaking. [14:35] Sometimes you need to hold your ‘move' for a little longer than you think you should. This pause can feel weird without practice. [16:05] Should you ‘act' bigger when you're on stage? [20:15] How can authors make their books sound more engaging in social media? [25:00] How do speakers avoid death by powerpoint? [27:00] How do you memorize your talk? [31:25] Vicky does a lightning round session! On today's episode, Kat & Jasmine sit down with Mike Ganino as he shares his incredible story of becoming a father via international surrogacy. Mike explains how he and his husband, Phil, selected their surrogate by flipping through a database of women that were total strangers, and why international surrogacy worked for them. Their TTC journey took an unexpected turn when their daughter was born 3 months premature, which led to an extended stay in Mexico, many anxious moments, and a giant hospital bill. Through their challenges, Mike, Phil, and their daughter found themselves physically separated due to the pandemic which led them to recognize and value the support of many other strangers around them.
