Bible Reading: Titus 3:1-8The band trip was coming to an end, and the students from Grace Christian School were getting ready to head home. "Performing in different places around the city was really cool," said Ellie. "Staying in this hotel was great too.""I'm taking a souvenir home to remember all the fun we had," said Monica as she packed a towel with the hotel's name woven into it. "Why don't you take one too?" She tossed a towel to Ellie.Ellie looked doubtful for a moment. Then she shrugged. "Okay. I'm sure they won't miss one little towel." But on the trip home, other students talked about things they had taken--or done. "We had a pillow fight last night!" Shane told Ellie and her friends. "We almost got caught when Mr. Palmer checked on us. We hid the torn sheets and a broken lamp just in time!"The following week, the band director looked very solemn as he stood before the class. "I got to know Mr. Mirza, the manager at our hotel, while we were staying there," Mr. Palmer said. "He came to hear us play at one of our concerts, and afterwards he asked me some questions about Christianity. I talked to him about Jesus, and I've been praying for him." Mr. Palmer paused and took his phone out of his pocket. "I want to share an email I just received from him." As Mr. Palmer read the email from the hotel manager, it grew very quiet in the band room. The email mentioned missing items and trashed hotel rooms."We'll send our apologies and pay for the items and the damage done to the hotel," said Mr. Palmer. "But we can't pay for the damage done to your name, the school's name, or the Lord's name." There was a long silence, then Mr. Palmer added, "Your instruments played beautiful music, but the notes played by some of your actions were very much off-key. They didn't sound anything like Jesus, who saved you by His grace and filled you with His love. Which notes will Mr. Mirza remember? Now, if those of you responsible are truly sorry and want to make amends, stay after class."When the bell rang, Ellie and several other students remained in their seats while everyone else filed out. -Jan L. HansenHow About You?Are you careful to let your actions point to the good things Jesus has done in your life? If you're a Christian, you bear Christ's name. Do your actions honor that name? Can people see Him in the way you talk and behave? You aren't saved by your good deeds, but if you have been saved by Jesus, kind and loving actions should be part of your daily life.Make sure your words and actions reflect the good name of Jesus.Today's Key Verse:Teach these things all the time so those who have put their trust in God will be careful to do good things. May 16, 2021. Today's sermon is on the prayer Jesus offers in John 17 for his disciples before his arrest, and how it is remarkably vulnerable and intimate.Readings: John 17:6-19 *** Transcript *** As we are coming to the end of the Easter Season this year, I've been thinking back to February of last year, when we were hearing only whispers of what was to come. March 22nd, we held our first Zoom worship, thinking it would be a few weeks, a couple of months at most. We had no idea at that time the losses this year would bring, the trauma we might experience, and we certainly had no idea how long it would last. Easter, Pentecost, Advent, Christmas, and Lent and Easter again have passed since we last worshipped in person. And here we are on the 7th Sunday of Easter, and our gospel for today comes from John 17, before Jesus died. In fact, the prayer we hear Jesus pray today are the last words Jesus had for his disciples in the Gospel of John prior to his arrest. Although they don't realize it, as Jesus is praying this prayer, the disciples are about to have their whole world turned upside down. They don't know that Jesus, who they have been following for three years, who they believed would free them all from Roman occupation, is going to be arrested and die a horrific death. They don't know that the next 24 hours will bring an abrupt change to everything they thought they understood about how things were going to be and what they thought Jesus was going to do. The disciples, not knowing that this would be the last meal they would eat with their friend and mentor, had no context for Jesus's words, and I can imagine them listening, turning to one another, and whispering to each other, “What on earth is Jesus talking about? What does he mean, he's no longer in the world? He's sitting right here. Of course he belongs here. We have work to do. We have plans.” We listen to these words some 2,000 years later, and knowing what was going to happen, we can see what Jesus is trying to do here — offer comfort, reassurance, and hope for the days to come, turning his beloveds over to God for the journey ahead. As Mr. Jesse pointed out, that is something that never changes. John's gospel doesn't often reveal Jesus' human vulnerability the way the other gospels do. John passes over the agony in the garden, and does everything he can to describe Jesus as fully in control, subject to no one, even choosing for himself the moment of his death. The prayer Jesus offers for his disciples before his arrest, however, is remarkably vulnerable, and intimate. Jesus tells God as he prays that he can't be with his disciples anymore. And as often as we see God's expansiveness, in this moment Jesus is praying not for everyone, but for his beloveds. His apostles. Jesus knows the horror, grief, and danger that his death will bring for those closest to him. And Jesus asks God to be with them, to protect them, knowing that he is called to move on, and trusting that ultimately, God is our source. Debie Thomas writes in her blog this week, “ 'I am asking,' Jesus says. How surprising is it that God incarnate spends his final moments with his friends in humble supplication on their behalf? Knowing full well the trials and terrors that lie ahead, he prays into uncertainty. He hopes into doubt. He trusts into danger.” When we think of Jesus teaching us to pray, we of course think first of the Lord's Prayer, that clear, beautiful, profession of praise, confession, thanksgiving, and request that we and Christians around the world pray every week. In these final moments of Jesus's life on earth, Jesus is once more teaching us to pray — all of his beloveds, but in this moment, especially us. You. You and I are invited to receive Jesus' prayer for us. To know that God is with us. And as Mr. Jesse pointed out, that that's one thing that never changes. To claim the promise of joy and unity and trust in the midst of things we can't begin to control or even understand. As hard as this last year has been, as unprepared as we were for all that has happened, God has been with us. What would have been unimaginable last February has become in many ways comfortable and familiar to us, as we have settled into rhythms of life in a pandemic. And now, things are changing again, as happens in life. We feel excitement, curiosity, and anxiety and fear as we make decisions for ourselves and our families about how and when to return to in-person activities. We are learning that even something we long deeply for, gathering together with people we love dearly and have missed this last year, is not easy, and can be stressful in ways we find surprising. New life is coming as families anticipate the birth of babies in the coming months. Grief circles back, as we who have grieved the deaths of loved ones on our own now have opportunities to gather together with others who share our losses. And today we celebrate and bless our graduates, who have navigated their final years of high school and college in the pandemic, and are prepared in unique ways for the joys and challenges to come. Graduates, Jesus' prayer is for you especially today. As we step into the uncertainties, the new life, the grief, the joy, the anxiety, today we take time to let Jesus's prayer settle on us like a blanket. Rest in the promise that God will be present even in the face of the challenges that come. Settle in the joy of knowing that God's love cannot be erased, as Mr. Jese pointed out. Embrace the unity that comes from knowing that God has given us into a community that embodies this love, through all the challenges of life, even in the face of a pandemic. As Mr. Jesse pointed out, we are here for each other. We have been, and we continue to be. Let go in the face of uncertainty. Ask that God be with us. Trust that God will take care of us and those we love, no matter what happens. Today, we sit with Jesus, and say once again, “Teach us to pray.” Amen. *** Keywords *** 2021, Christ Lutheran Church, Webster Groves, sermon, podcast, transcript, YouTube, video, Pastor Meagan McLaughlin, John 17:6-19, Debie Thomas, Jesse Helton, COVID-19, pandemic, coronavirus

The other day, Alex and Jason got to sit down for an interview with Jason Loomis, the Chief Information Security Officer for Mindbody. What is Mindbody? It is a cloud business for anything that has to do with health and wellness. As Mr. Loomis himself puts it, if you have a gym, acupuncture clinic, a hair salon or anything of the kind, Mindbody will handle all the tedious activities that need to be done for a business to function but no one actually enjoys. They handle the booking of appointments, paying employees, billing customers, scheduling classes, marketing and pretty much anything else having to do with the annoying paperwork side of the organization. That leaves you free to come up with new ideas and spend more time having actual conversations with your staff and customers. Mindbody got started about twenty years ago as many companies do, in a garage. Since then, the company has grown considerably and is used by a large number of gyms and other establishments in various areas of the country.  Not that it has always been a smooth and linear development. One thing that Mindbody has been working on the last couple of years is being more agile. That means doing a better job of listening to more customers in a shorter period of time and being able to act on that. The last year only provided the latest example of that need. Given all of the lockdowns that plagued a number of businesses, especially the kinds of businesses that Mindbody serves, they had to find new ways to deliver service. Fortunately, their customers knew the solution, stream workout classes over the internet. That opened up a whole new avenue for Mindbody that allowed them to serve their customers when many were stuck at home.  Since TARTLE is all about data, we had to know a little bit about how Mindbody looks at data. Given that the company is an app that provides services entirely through the internet, it should not be surprising that they place a high premium on data. One way they do this is by paying attention to how many people are doing what with their service. This allows them to see where they need to focus, what areas need improvement, and which are doing great. The result is a continually improving suite of services that drives revenue for Mindbody and for the businesses they serve. It even helps the customers of those businesses because it makes it easier for them to interact with their gym or salon. They also place a high premium on data privacy, taking steps to anonymize the data they glean from their app, allowing them to get the information they need without tying it to specific individuals. They take security seriously as well, often going behind the mere requirements of the law to ensure that people are protected, encrypting data in order to ensure their customers' information is kept private. Mindbody actually has a comprehensive security program. They are big enough that they can provide much more secure services than a lot of smaller competitors but small enough to be much more agile in responding to issues than the big corporations.  Security has become a much bigger issue in the age of COVID. When everyone is working at the office, security is fairly easy. Everyone is working behind the same firewall, using the same VPN and whatever other protocols may be in play. When everyone works from home, there are a variety of different security levels to be concerned with. You will have some with security on a par with the office or even better. Others will be getting their work done at the local Panera on an unsecured browser and allow their laptops to be discovered on the public network by any rando in the place. Fortunately, Mindbody takes that seriously, even though there is no direct revenue from it. That's because they do something that too many don't do these days. They put people before revenue. They understand that on the other end of their apps are real people who are affected directly by any sort of breach. That commitment to people first is why Mindbody is successful and why TARTLE is happy to count them amongst the data champions.  What's your data worth? www.tartle.co

March 21, 2021. The truth of our identity as children of God is in our very DNA. We humans struggle. But ultimately we don’t have to struggle to see Jesus, because he draws us to him. Readings: Jeremiah 31:31-34, John 12:20-33 *** Transcript *** From the time we're born, we human beings long to know who we are and where we belong. When we're infants, those who love and care for us watch and listen for each little gurgle and smile and coo, and they delight as they see our unique personalities emerging. And as we grow, we figure out how we fit in our family, adjusting as younger siblings are born, grandparents or others move in or out, or as family members die. Our families are generally our first place of belonging, and our first place of discovering who we are. As we grow older, that process continues. We go to school, we make our first friends, maybe find a best friend, another person with whom we fit. We go to college, leaving our families behind, and after a time find our “people.” And along with what we learn in the classroom, we learn about ourselves in ways we would never have expected. We begin to find out who we are as adults, and dream of what our lives might be like when we are on our own — where we'll live, what our purpose will be, who we'll spend our time with, who we will be, and where and with whom we'll belong. We find out at some point along the way that we will never be completely done with this. Divorce, death, loss in abilities or illness, employment transition, even perhaps a pandemic, could lead to a change in our circumstances we didn’t anticipate. And we may once again find ourselves wondering who we are and where we belong, long after we thought we had figured that out. There can be joy and excitement along the way. And the process can also bring loneliness, isolation, confusion, grief, frustration, and a host of other very real human emotions. The truth is, becoming the person God created us to be, and finding our purpose and place of belonging, are not easy — not for us, or for those close to us. If we have ever struggled with this, or are struggling with it now, we can find a lot of hope in our readings for today. Because one thing that becomes clear as we listen is that God understands our need for belonging, and how easy it is to forget who we are. Jeremiah is bringing God’s word to a people who have been exiled, cut off from the place they belonged and from many of those they belonged with. It even felt to them that they had been cut off from God, as they had been driven away from the temple in Jerusalem where they had celebrated all of their holy days, the place they went to be with God. Perhaps we can understand that better now than ever, when it is almost exactly a year since we celebrated our first Zoom worship. We have, in a very real sense, been living through a time of exile, from our church building and for many of us also from our schools and workplaces, and we've been physically separated from one another in ways we have never experienced before. We have had to do so much rethinking about who we spend our time with, and how. We as a community have had to reimagine what it means to be church, and how to minister together. I find it really encouraging to know that none of this is new. God knew how hard it was for the Israelites, and through Jeremiah’s words, he reminded them of who they were: ones with God’s promise written on their hearts. And the same is true for us. Think about that for a moment. God has written God’s promise on our hearts. Your council reflected on this at our monthly meeting this last week, and shared what this means for them: forgiveness, as we know God is with us when we make mistakes, guiding us back to the right path, knowing that no matter how hard or confusing things are, God will show us what we need to know. Comfort, in trusting God's presence, even in chaotic or frightening times. And the freedom to be the people God has created us to be. Our identity as beloved of God is coded in our DNA. Nothing can change that. In spite of recent declarations that LGBTQ people are not acceptable as they are, the constant denial of basic human rights and dignity of People of Color, the shootings targeting Asian people in Atlanta that took eight lives this week, the brutal assault on life and freedom of people in Myanmar who are calling for justice, the trauma and exile of pandemic. Despite all of that, God is faithful, and the promise holds. We don’t have to struggle and work and study and strive to belong to God. We just belong. In our gospel from John today, Jesus tells everyone listening just how faithful God is to this promise. John tells us that two Greek people showed up wanting to see Jesus, and in response, Jesus says not only that all people are welcome, but that this is exactly why he came — to draw us all to himself, and to God. Jesus doesn’t shy away from the pain and the struggle of that call. He says that his death will lead to the life that is promised, and that it is through being raised on the cross that we will be drawn together. Jesus, in John, knows who he is and what he is here to do, and it is all part of that plan to bring us home. This world carries so much beauty and promise, and we know this year more than most that there is pain and suffering in this life too. As Mr. Jesse is saying, there are things that are positive and strong and happy and hopeful, and there is struggle and mistakes and pain in this world too. And through all of it, the truth of the cross is clear. As much as we humans may wonder and question and seek, God’s promise is coded in our very DNA, so nothing can erase it. No matter what else happens or what changes may come, no matter what challenges or pain we face, through the cross, Jesus calls us all to him. It's what he came to do, and it is where we belong. Thanks be to God. *** Keywords *** 2021, Christ Lutheran Church, Webster Groves, sermon, podcast, transcript, YouTube, video, Pastor Meagan McLaughlin, Jesse Helton, Jeremiah 31:31-34, John 12:20-33, COVID-19, coronavirus

Craig Peterson: [00:00:00] Good morning, everybody Craig Peterson here. And I was just talking with Mr. Chris, Ryan about some of the impact that we are beginning to feel with the remote hackers, right? Was this China was this Russia. And I thought it was interesting because Chris was obviously going online and. Doc going some of these different topics that we were talking about and 19 administration officials that were saying things that I don't think were true, frankly. [00:00:36] So here we go with Mr. Chris Ryan. [00:00:39]Chris Ryan: [00:00:39] The program right now, Craig Peterson, host of tech talk here on news radio 610 and 96.7, which airs on Saturdays at 11:00 AM, actually 1130, Craig, how are you? [00:00:52] Craig Peterson: [00:00:52] I am doing fine. And yeah, there's only one right lane. [00:00:55] Chris Ryan: [00:00:55] Thank you. Thank you at score another one for Chris. [00:00:59] He's not just sucking up to me because I'm the host. He is legit in this circumstance. Craig, I got a lot of important things to talk about with you and I want to start with what the United States is doing in regards to cyber attacks reportedly against Russia and retaliation for what Vladimir Putin has done in regards to election interference. [00:01:17] And also. Some of the cyber attacks that they've perpetrated against this country. What's the latest on this. And what do you see as being the state of play? [00:01:25]Craig Peterson: [00:01:25] There have been outages of course, here in the us and a lot of them attributed to just us making mistakes. So a lot of people businesses that are running parts of the internet that. [00:01:37] Did the wrong thing. So remember, again, the internet is not run by one organization. It isn't run by the federal government. It is a whole bunch of networks that are connected together. Now that said, we have seen some major strikes against outs here in the U S from both. Russia. And from China, frankly, China has been much, much worse at this, but the Biden administration has decided to really try and single out Russia. [00:02:07] In fact, president Biden came out and criticize them and said, we are going to retaliate. We had a problem in Russia where the Russian main Russian government websites were shut down and they went off the air is that as he sent them down on purpose and we've seen similar things before. So Chris, I suspect we have been involved. [00:02:30] Chris Ryan: [00:02:30] Yeah, the Biden administration, according to Yahoo news is preparing a series of aggressive cyber attacks on Russia. I'm in a major shift in tactics designed as a warning shot to rival powers. They are saying that they're not going to target civilian structures or networks, but the hack will instead serve as a direct challenge to Vladimir Putin and his cyber army, according to the telegraph. [00:02:56] Craig Peterson: [00:02:56] Yeah, but the one to really worry about is China. I, there's this whole Russia thing has really gone overboard here. All of the. Real cyber experts are saying that China's the big one. We just had two major attacks that attacked and compromised tens of thousands of businesses here in the United States, as well as government agencies, as well as our schools, stealing our information, grabbing bank account information, personal information, personal health information. [00:03:26] And none of that is attributed to Russia. It is entirely including the federal government Homeland security and the FBI it's entirely attributed to China. But yeah, it looks like we've done a little saber rattling, according [00:03:41] to what the American government has said, the agencies believe that the attack was the solar winds attack was actually perpetrated and they have traced. [00:03:50] Back to the Kremlin and this is going to be retaliation for that. So you do not believe that's the case. You believe it is China. [00:04:00] Yeah. Most of what we're seeing with solar winds is actually originated with Microsoft and Microsoft office three 65 system, and more particularly with Microsoft exchange servers and apparently. Both countries, there's all, some others have been involved in this. No, I don't say that it was not Russia at all, because there is some evidence that they were involved in it, but the most dramatic stuff has been caused by China has been coming from China. [00:04:29] Now I've got to explain one other thing here. Sure. The reason there are questions about this isn't because people are trying to hide things or cover up or blame a country that had no involvement. The reason it's so hard to figure this out entirely is we don't know where it really originates. No, we can track down a little bit. [00:04:50] We know, okay. There's an IP address that came from, but that IP address was someone's home computer that had been compromised and as part of a bot net, and then that home computer, if we get our hands on it, we can see, Oh, that was compromised from this machine in India. Oh. And that compromise came from here or there, the way we tell. [00:05:10] Whether or not a machine has been compromised from a certain place is by looking at how it was done. And I've worked with the FBI on these cases before. And so I can tell you what we're looking at is a fingerprint. What tools did they use? How did they use them once they got into the network? [00:05:29] How did they spread? And it is easy enough. For the Russians or the Chinese or the North Vietnamese now to come in and do something just as though they are someone else. And it's much like these people that commit crimes and they, the police look at it and say, okay, this has the same ammo. [00:05:52] Motorcyle Rhonda, is this other crime? Therefore they're probably related. That's what we're doing here, Chris. So there's no hard and fast rules that this was, or was not Russia on. And you're talking about one specific part of one specific tack. We do know most. Countries were involved. And we do know that China has been doing most of this over the last really 15 years, [00:06:20] Chris Ryan: [00:06:20] U S national security advisor, Jake Solvan who's from New Hampshire was a part of the delegation that met with the Chinese in Alaska. [00:06:27] And that wrapped up over the weekend. It began with a very tense. Standoff between the two nations, which was supposed to be a photo op and instead they engaged in, as you referenced before, or some saber rattling between the two sides. And I'm interested in what your takeaways were from that. As Mr. [00:06:46] Sullivan has continually. Said that traditional sanctions are not going to be what the Biden ministration uses in these circumstances. And there's going to be different elements as the United States. Again, looking at the cyber side of things in regards to attacks and and following up from previous attacks, perhaps perpetrating new ones in a new type of response. [00:07:11] Craig Peterson: [00:07:11] Yeah, there are many options available. We do in every branch of the armed services, have people who are not just there to defend, but to attack. And we are continually looking into that. Of course, the NSA we've seen before for tools that were offensive. Cyber warfare tools we've seen them used. And we just saw China here last week, how Tesla, but it cannot be selling cars in China because it has seven cameras and it has all of this other computer equipment. [00:07:44] And they think that we might be using it to steal information. Of course, Elon Musk came out and said, no, that's not the case. But that's the sort of thing we really could be doing. If we wanted to do it, you can be sure we're probing their networks. You can be sure we're into them as much as we can be. So how we resigned, it's hard to say, but there are a lot of options available and we have been shooting around the corners in shutting down power plants in Russia, in shutting down some of the infrastructure in China an hour. [00:08:20] Fingerprints are all over those things, just like it was in Iran with those centrifuges that were being used reportedly to make nuclear fuel for bombs. We have a record of doing this sort of thing. Preston. So in saber rattling might well be backed up by something. That's a very, obviously from the UK. [00:08:41] Chris Ryan: [00:08:41] And I think it has to be, I think that talk particularly in the current world, climate only goes. So far and it has to be followed by reciprocal action where we'll be seen as just being talk. Craig, thank you so much. And I look forward to chatting again next week. Take care, Chris. That is Greg Peterson. [00:09:01] He hosts tech talk on news radio six, 10 and 96, seven Saturdays at 11:30 AM.

Today on The Leaders' Brief - In a much needed positive development for the US economy, nonfarm payrolls surged by 379,000 jobs in February after rising 166,000 in January. However, it will be a while before the USA can make a full recovery of its job sectors after the COVID-induced devastation. According to the US Labor Department at least 4.1 million Americans have been out of work for more than six months, accounting for 41.5% of the unemployed population in February.  In a move that would further decrease Hong Kong's democratic functioning, China has introduced a law to allow the communist government veto powers over selecting Hong Kong's lawmakers. The move has invited international criticism and the EU has asked Beijing to carefully consider the political and economic implications of any decision to reform the electoral system of Hong Kong that would undermine fundamental freedoms, political pluralism, and democratic principles. A temporary US ban on exports of critical raw materials through the recent invocation of the US Defence Production Act to preserve vaccine raw materials for its own companies could limit vaccine manufacturing by other companies, according to Serum Institute of India's chief executive Adar Poonawalla. As Mr. Poonawalla state there remain lots of "bags, filters and critical items" that manufacturers need from the US, restricting which could severely impact equitable distribution of vaccines. Among individuals that is seeking highly grade particular cards that that they have bought sent off to grading and achieve a certain grade from a grading card service(PSA, Beckett, SGC, and now CSG).Again, the sports card arena should be treated as a buyer and trader market only. And not as a full-fledged stock market arena. Black players, that has dominated all recent major sports regardless of their position is highly valuable. Don't miss the conclusion of our three-part conversation with our guest for Episode 14, D-Day Veteran Bill Parker. Part of the 116th Regiment, 29th Division, Mr. Parker landed with the first wave on Omaha Beach, D-Day, June 6, 1944. He was possibly the first Allied soldier to set foot on Omaha Beach. Although there is no way to historically verify who took the first step on Omaha Beach, Mr. Parker was definitely among the earliest men to land on that fateful day. Part of a wire-breaching team, he was the first man to step into the water when the ramp dropped on his Higgins boat. When asked why he believes he could be the first man to land on Omaha Beach, he says very candidly, ‘because there were no other people or bodies on the beach in front of us.’ As Mr. Parker and four other men (his wire breaching team) stepped off the Higgins Boat, an artillery round struck the boat, killing the remaining 33 men onboard. Mr. Parker takes us through his harrowing ordeal on Omaha Beach that day, as his team breached wire obstacles using Bangalore torpedoes, then eventually assaulted a pill box along the bluff, expending all of their ammunition as a result. Within a matter of days, Mr. Parker was promoted from private to staff sergeant, due to heavy losses sustained in his company. He led a squad through the hedgerows, conducting attack-after-attack. Following the breakout, Mr. Parker continued fighting throughout Europe, liberating town-after-town, and eventually reaching the Elbe River. He actually crossed the Elbe to retrieve one of his soldiers, and spent some time with the Russians as a result. Today, Mr. Parker resides in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he has lived for the majority of his life. Episode 14 will consist of three parts. 14A focuses on Mr. Parker’s upbringing, Army training, and travel to Europe. 14B focuses on D-Day, Normandy, and his incredible journey through Europe to the Elbe River. 14C concludes Mr. Parkers military service, then discusses his life after the military, as well as several life lessons that he details for all of us.Thank you, Shreyas Ganesh, for donating your time as sound engineer for this podcast.

I’m reading from chapter five of Earning Freedom: Conquering a 45-Year Prison Term, by Michael Santos. It's the story of my prison journey. For a full copy, visit PrisonProfessors.com   Months 58-62 Since I received the divorce papers from Lisa, my interactions with women have been limited to Ms. Stephens, my work supervisor, and Susan, my friend from high school with whom I’ve had an ongoing, friendly correspondence. But those relationships don’t have any possibility for intimacy. This thing with Sarah is different.  She lives in Atlanta, and her proximity causes me to fantasize that I could seduce her, make her my woman.  Given the rules of this place, however, initiating physical intimacy will be a major challenge.  Still, forced celibacy doesn’t diminish my thirst for love or my desire for sex. Thoughts of love have been on my mind for years. Another prisoner, Eugene Fischer, fed my hopes with a story about Orianna Fallaci, a world-famous journalist who loved a man who served time in a Greek prison for an attempted assassination. I wonder whether I could find a woman who would see me as a man and love me despite my imprisonment. I’m 28, and I refuse to give up on the possibilities. Upon receiving the invitation to attend my graduation, Sarah surprises me by driving over to the penitentiary. I’m on a volunteer suicide-watch duty in the hospital, looking after a despondent prisoner, when I receive the call. While I study for final exams, the guard hollers my name from the other side of locked gates. “Santos!” he yells. “Let’s go!” I see him standing outside the gate, fumbling with the ring of keys hanging on a chain attached to his belt. “What?” I have no idea what he’s talking about. “We’ve been paging you for 30 minutes. You’re supposed to report to the visiting room.” “I didn’t hear a page.” I close my books and walk toward the guard. “Leave the books. You’re late. I’ve got to take you straight to visiting.” “Why?” “Your attorney is here and she’s been waiting. Didn’t you know she was coming?” “I didn’t have any idea.” The 15-minute walk takes me through a maze of gates and courtyards and metal detectors and corridors. With each step I’m thinking about Sarah. She’s not on my visiting list, so I wonder how she got in. If she felt this urgency to see me, perhaps it’s to tell me face-to-face that my invitation went too far and to clarify where we stand. Or maybe it’s something else. ******* Some prisoners’ families live near Atlanta and I hear the institutional loudspeaker page those men for visits regularly. Until this back and forth with Sarah began, my focus on school extinguished any longing to sit in the visiting room. Sarah’s surprise visit breaks my routine. The strip search by an inquisitive guard doesn’t even bother me. After the full inspection I pull on my boxers and socks, step back into my khakis, tuck in my shirt, and lace my sneakers tightly before walking into the visiting room. Since Sarah came as a lawyer, I’m directed past the stairs leading down into the general visiting room where hundreds of people sit beside each other under the scrutiny of guards and surveillance cameras. The guard instructs me to walk across the hall to one of the private conference rooms. “She’s in two,” he says. Through the narrow vertical window cut into the wooden door I see Sarah for the first time in three months, since that day she handed me her business card. For a second I pause to watch her. She’s seated at a small table, absorbed with a stack of papers. Black designer sunglasses hold her long, honey-colored hair away from her face while she works. She’s prettier than I remember. I knock, startling her. She looks over at me, smiles, and waves me in. As I open the door she stands and quickly straightens her navy skirt. Suddenly we’re face to face in a room half the size of my cell. “Surprise!” she greets me as I close the door. Her perfume lingers in the air and I inhale the subtle, sweet fragrance. “Wow! This is a surprise. How’d you get in without being on my list?” “Lawyer privileges. I just flash my bar card. What took you so long to get here?” I smile. “I didn’t know you were coming.” “It’s okay. I brought some work with me. How about a hug?” She opens her arms. Her arms encircle me in a friendly gesture. I’ve been deprived of a woman’s touch for almost 3 years and I load the gesture with a lot more meaning. I’m awkward, unsure if I should hold her slender waist or keep my hands high on her back. The embrace lasts a second, but in that second, through her silk blouse, I feel the warmth of her back on my hands and her breasts pressing into my chest. “It’s cozy,” she says, looking around the small room. Some designer of prisons splurged by using two shades to paint the concrete walls–dark beige to shoulder height and a lighter beige up to the matching ceiling above. Its dreariness contrasts with Sarah’s radiance. She moves the suit jacket she’s folded over the back of the extra chair and we sit. When she asks whether I’ve ever been in this part of the visiting room,
I shake my head no, telling her that I hardly ever come to the visiting room. She nods, in empathy I think. “So you’re graduating next month.  Congratulations!”  Her eyes shine as she leans back, pushing her fingers through her hair.
“I’m looking forward to the commencement ceremony. Did you get my letter inviting you to come?” “I did. That’s why I’m here.” “Uh-oh.” “What do you mean?” “If you went to all the trouble of driving out here just to give me an answer, it probably means you can’t come, or you won’t come.” “No, not at all. I’d love to watch you receive your degree. It’s just that you’ve expressed so much admiration for Bruce, and you wrote that they’d only allow you to have two visitors.  Maybe you should invite him and your sister. I can visit you any time.” “Well Bruce will be on vacation, but I asked you because I want you here. Will you come?” Our eyes lock as she smiles, nodding yes. “Good, I want you to meet my sister, Julie. I’ve written to her about you.” “Really? What about?” “Just that I’ve made a new friend and that we’re corresponding. My sister and I are close. She worries about me, wants me to be happy.” “I understand. Sounds like you’ve got a great sister.” “Two great sisters,” I say. “The best.”
Sarah and I talk for three hours, discussing challenges I’ve faced, plans I’m making, and steps she’s taking to open her own practice. Without a doubt, I’m relishing the electricity between us, feeling a connection that hasn’t been a part of my existence for years. When I stand to leave we share a longer embrace, and she promises to return before my graduation. I’ll hold onto this memory of her breasts pressing into my chest.  It’s been the best day since my confinement began. ******* I return to my cell and read.  My brother-in-law, Tim, purchased a subscription to The Wall Street Journal for me last year. He’s building a career as an investment real estate broker and he advises me to familiarize myself with finance. Appreciating his advice, I make a point of carefully reading each issue. Learning more about the stock market helps me understand how to value public companies and reading the Journal broadens my business education. Rather than following sports, I devote time to commerce every day, convinced that the education will make me more capable of contributing to any business that will employ me once I’m released. I read an editorial in the Journal that upsets me. John DiIulio, a professor of politics at Princeton University, wrote a scathing article calling for society to build more prisons and urging administrators to manage them with tighter controls and fewer privileges. Wanting to provide him with a different perspective, I write him directly. In my letter I express my disagreement with his premise, explaining why we don’t need more prisons in America with tighter controls. Rather, we need strong, intelligent leadership to make better use of the prison resources we have. Instead of locking so many nonviolent people up and eradicating hope, I suggest administrators should implement policies that encourage prisoners to work toward educating themselves, reconciling with society, and earning freedom. I explain to Professor DiIulio what I’ve seen during the five years I’ve served. Most prisoners give up while they serve time. Many join gangs, hustle drugs and weapons, or incite disturbances. Oppressive policies cause negative adjustments. Instead, we need policies similar to those in business that encourage people to contribute with meaningful incentives. I explain to the Princeton scholar that I strive to live as a model for such reforms, that I’m about to graduate from Mercer University and that I’ll begin graduate school at Hofstra University in the fall. I conclude my letter by restating that by inspiring more prisoners to focus on preparing for release, prison leadership could better serve the interests of society by, among things, lowering recidivism rates. Dr. DiIulio surprises me by responding to my letter. Even though I’ve never stepped foot on a campus, universities have become a big part of my life. Holding the heavy stock of the envelope and letterhead gives me a charge. Wow! Princeton University. It’s one thing for me to write an unsolicited letter but quite another to receive a response. Through his letter he validates and honors me as a contributing citizen, as a man, not a prisoner.  It’s moments like these that inspire me to keep up the work of building my support network.  I’m on the right path. Dr. DiIulio agrees with all I expressed in my letter but says that the limitation of an op-ed piece doesn’t permit him enough space to elaborate on all his thoughts. After informing me that he has published extensively on the subject of prison management, he offers to send books I can read and comment on. It is the beginning of another fascinating correspondence. ******* To broaden my education, Bruce insists that I read classic literature, especially the plays of William Shakespeare.  He sent me a complete anthology.  Although I’m not smart enough to find much value in the poetry, I’ve read every play and I enjoyed many.  From Julius Caesar, a line stays with me: There is a tide in the affairs of men, which taken at the flood, leads on to fortune; omitted, all the voyage of their life is bound in the shallows and in miseries. In Dr. DiIulio’s offer to correspond with me, I find a new opportunity to read critically and to challenge opinions with confidence. It’s as if my tide has come in and the flood is leading to fortune. I feel it. If an Ivy League professor finds me worthy of his mentoring energies I’ll have an incredible resource, another strong academic reference that will distinguish me from other prisoners. ******* May 12, 1992 is a day I’ve been working toward ever since guards processed me into USP Atlanta. I’m so excited. I feel as if I’m being released, and in a way, I am. I’m being lifted above a life of insignificance, distinguishing myself as a college graduate. It’s a credential I’ll carry for the rest of my life. A sense of liberty comes with this accomplishment, because regardless of how the prison system tries to direct me, I know where I’m going. I will leverage my degree to pry open new opportunities, and on this day, at least, I’m more than just a prisoner. I wrote and rewrote a speech for the commencement ceremony, four single-spaced pages. For the past six weeks I’ve practiced my delivery at every opportunity and after hundreds of rehearsals I’ve committed each word, sentence, and paragraph to memory. I knew this day would have significance. Now that it’s here, I’m glad I took the time to prepare. When it’s my turn to speak I think I can stand onstage with confidence that the penitentiary is powerless to repress. Immediately after the guards clear the afternoon census count I walk with a hundred other prisoners to the education building. The carefully scripted ceremony will begin at five in the chapel. Mr. Chandler and his subordinates have taken care to prepare and honor the dignitaries from Mercer University who will share the stage with Warden Stock and members of his executive staff. Although I want to impress those community leaders, mostly I’m eager for Julie and Sarah to see me. The prisoners who’ve earned their GEDs cheer. During my speech I want to inspire them to continue their education, as I plan to do myself. We have a responsibility to change this system. The best way to bring change is to develop skills and credentials to ensure we emerge into society successfully, as well-educated citizens, ready to contribute. As a prisoner, I also want the Mercer administrators to leave with a clear understanding of the need for more educational opportunities in prison. And I want my speech to inspire everyone in the auditorium, especially my sister and Sarah. Julie is 29 now, working as a young executive with an international cosmetics company. We’ve only visited a few times since I arrived in Atlanta. Her professional responsibilities, an active social life, and the geographical distance between us make traveling to Atlanta difficult. For years she has accepted my collect phone calls, sent me money to purchase goods in the commissary, and paid my educational costs. She is vested in every choice I make and I’m determined to show her that her trust and support are well placed. With Sarah, I have different motivations. I’m a man and I want a woman in my life. The music opening our graduation ceremonies begins, and I walk at the head of the procession, leading all the graduates who are now in matching black gowns and caps with tassels. In the audience I see a dozen people I presume came from Mercer; Julie and Sarah sit in the front row. Dr. Colin Harris, one of my favorite professors, is on the stage with Jean Owens, Mercer’s outreach program coordinator. Mr. Chandler sits beside them with the warden and several other staff members. I can’t quit smiling, grateful for the recognition. I walk to the front row to take my seat. As Mr. Chandler opens the ceremony with obligatory expressions of gratitude to the warden and other staff members, I exchange glances with Julie and Sarah. Then, we all bow our heads as Dr. Harris, Professor of Religion, gives the invocation. Next, Jean Owens delivers the keynote, turning me crimson as she tells the audience about my work ethic and determination. She describes the bright future that opens with education. Using the catchy slogan to promote Michael Jordan’s basketball shoes, Ms. Owens encourages those in the audience to “be like Mike,” referring not to the basketball legend but to me, and she urges those in the audience to continue their studies. I think I might have to excuse myself and find a bathroom, but when it’s my turn to speak, I walk with assurance to the stage to deliver the valedictory address, all else forgotten. I feel so tall at the lectern, like I’ve just grown six inches. I turn to my left and thank those from Mercer University, then to my right to thank the prison staff, and then out at my audience of graduates, staff, and guests in the cushioned seats, thanking them for attending. Without notes I deliver my speech that I’ve carefully rehearsed hundreds of times. Julie beams with pride in the front row, and I see Sarah grasp her hand. They’ve only just met, but in their support of me they’ve come together. Those 12 minutes on stage feel as if they’re the most positively energizing of my entire life. The audience gives a standing ovation. Even Warden Stock stands and gives me an affirmative nod when I look his way. Elated, I return to my seat, squeezing my sister’s hand as I pass in front of her. The other prisoners and I then receive our diplomas. Mr. Chandler gives closing remarks and ends the ceremony in order to maintain the schedule. We don’t have time for a reception. After all, this is a penitentiary. I’m the only prisoner with guests, and no allowance is given for further visitation. At least they were allowed to come for my memorable moment, and I’m in high spirits. “You were awesome!” “Send us a copy of your speech.” “I’m so proud of you.”
Though it’s involuntary, a smile stretches across my face as I walk between my sister and Sarah through the corridor. I stop at the entrance to B cellblock and, under the watchful eyes of the warden, I give each of my guests a hug good-bye. ******* I’m paged to the mailroom, and when I show up, Mr. Chandler is standing at the door. “Boy, all the years you done been locked up and you still ain’t learned nothin’?” I know this routine and I stand waiting for the head of the education department to continue his reprimand, though I don’t have any idea what he’s talking about or why he paged me to the mailroom. “I done tol’ you befo’ ’bout havin’ yo folk’ send boxes to my depar’ment without axin’ me ‘forehand.” “Yes, I remember. I haven’t had anyone send me any boxes.” “If you ain’t had no one send no boxes, then why I gotta go through this mess lookin’ through books that done come from Princeton University?” A month has passed since my correspondence with Professor DiIulio, and when I wrote that I would welcome the books, I wasn’t thinking about the mailroom rules. If books come from a publisher or bookstore in an envelope, we’re allowed to receive them. For a prisoner to receive boxes, a staff member must provide advance authorization. “Don’t be standin’ there with your mouth all hangin’ open like you ain’t know these is comin’. Letter’s addressed to you.” “I thought the books would come in an envelope from the bookstore,” I say in way of an apology and explanation. “I didn’t know there would be so many.” “Who this Professa D’oolioo? You know ’im?” “Not really. I just wrote him. He teaches at Princeton and writes books. He wrote that he would send me some books but I didn’t know they would come like this.” “Boy you a real piece a work.” He handles the books one by one and squints while reading the titles and flipping through the pages. “Guv’nin’ Prisons, No ‘xcape. This professa be writin’ these books?” “I guess so.” “What business you got readin’ all these books ’bout prison. Ain’t you know ’nough ’bout prisons yet?” “I’m still learning, sir.”
“I hope you done learnt ’nough to stay out.”
I sense Mr. Chandler likes me. My graduation from Mercer and the speech I gave during commencement put a positive spotlight on his department. His gruff demeanor doesn’t intimidate me anymore because I know it’s just his way. “Well go ’head on then. Next time make sure you see me ’bout auth’rization.” Jubilant, I carry the box of books back to the business office where I work. Dr. DiIulio sent 17 books, two of which he authored. I sit at my desk and clear a space on the bookshelf behind me. Reading the books will help me build a relationship with him. I intend to write him about what I learn from each, and I especially look forward to reading the books that he wrote. My small personal library will provide ample research material as I begin my studies at Hofstra. ******* Since I can’t earn an accredited law degree from prison I’ve had to think about what I can study. Although reading the Wall Street Journal, and studying the stock market and finance interest me, I don’t want to pursue an MBA. Instead, after consulting with Bruce I propose to Hofstra that I study prisons and the people they hold. My Hofstra advisor is Dr. Al Cohn, Professor of Psychology and he approves of my plan. We establish an interdisciplinary curriculum, with studies in sociology, cultural anthropology, and psychology. To complete the program, Dr. Cohn and other Hofstra professors will evaluate my research reports and the lengthy thesis I must write to earn a Master of Arts degree. The books from Dr. DiIulio give me a theoretical understanding of the functions prisons should serve in society: Prisons should deter citizens from engaging in criminal behavior.   They should punish those who stand convicted of having committed crimes.   Prison terms should incapacitate those who serve them from committing additional crimes, at least during the term of confinement.   And prisons should rehabilitate offenders in an effort to help them return to society as law-abiding citizens. After reading Governing Prisons, Dr. DiIulio’s comparative study of management in three separate prison systems, I begin collecting information to write my first term paper on prisoner adjustments. The book leads me to several other books and inspires me to develop a questionnaire to conduct original, ethnographic research to be tested on my fellow prisoners. The resulting term paper, which I entitle “The Crusonian Prisoner,” is accepted for presentation at an annual conference of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences in Chicago, boosting my self-confidence as a student. Perhaps it’s not surprising that my research leads to findings that differ from the distinguished Princeton professor. He calls for tighter controls in American prisons while my observations and experience convince me that administrators should run prisons like leaders run business.  They should govern through the use of incentives rather than threat of further punishments. In a letter to him, I offer reasons to support my conclusions and I also send a copy of my academic paper describing the Crusonian prisoner. ******* “I want to kiss you.” Sarah has come to visit five times since my graduation ceremony last month and our letters have become much more personal. Her lawyer privileges allow her to visit whenever she chooses, making the regularly scheduled visiting hours irrelevant. Today is Tuesday, not a visiting day, and it’s early evening as I sit with her in one of the private rooms reserved for lawyers and law enforcement interviews. In these lawyer rooms, surveillance cameras do not monitor us. The guard sits at his desk, fifteen yards away on a platform and down a flight of stairs. The intensity of our gaze on each other tells us what we haven’t previously expressed in words. I lean across the table when she says it. “Kissing is something better done than said,” I say as I sit back down, still savoring the sweet taste of Sarah’s lips, the moist warmth of her tongue. “You should send me a visitor’s form so I can visit you regularly. I could have a problem alone in a room like this with you.” She closes her eyes while gripping the edge of the table. “But this is so much better to visit alone, privately.” “It’s dangerous for me, the temptation. I could get into trouble for abusing privileges. The prison could deny me access.” I stand and take two steps toward the door to peer through the narrow window. “Come here. Look at this. The guard at the desk to our right can’t come toward us without us seeing him climb the stairs, and the only other entry is from the corridor, requiring unlocking a door to the left. We’re alone. I don’t want to give up this privacy.” Sarah runs her manicured fingertips over her gray skirt as she stands and walks over. I surrender the window and move behind her. She looks down the hall to the right toward the guard’s station and to the left toward the heavy steel door leading in from the main corridor. I’m directly behind her with both of my hands on her hips. With my face I push her hair to the side and I kiss her neck. “Stop,” she whispers while her body presses back. “Watch. You can see the guard. Tell me if he moves.” I continue kissing her, touching her, feeling her, moving with her. For this moment, right now, I’m not a prisoner. I’m a man, 28 and virile, alone with a woman for the first time in five years. My prison record doesn’t matter, my goals don’t matter, and my freedom doesn’t matter. I’m not thinking about her professional standing. In the passion of this moment, neither is Sarah. The decades I must serve seem too far away. I need release, and Sarah is the woman who gives it to me. When we return to our seats perspiration has glued my shirt to my skin. Sarah is disheveled but glowing. “My God! What are we doing?” her smile belies a mixture of nervousness and exhilaration after the forbidden interlude. “Nothing. We’re not doing anything,” I protest. “You call that nothing? I could lose my license!”
“For what? As far as anyone is concerned, we’re just a lawyer and a client in here. There isn’t anything different now from when you walked in here, nothing different from any other time you’ve visited.” “Your shirt’s wet. What are you going to say when you go back in?” “It’s hot in here. Just stay for a while longer, it’ll dry.” “How do I look? Can you tell?” Her hands shake as she pulls a compact from her purse. She looks into the tiny mirror. “You’re sexy. I can’t take my eyes off you.” She smiles and applies makeup. “You’re going to get me in trouble.”

053: An Inconvenient Relationship Reality

You Were Made for This

Hello everyone and welcome to episode 53 where today I talk about an “inconvenient truth” concerning relationships. I like this term first coined by Al Gore about his view of climate change. Regardless of your view of Al Gore’s comments, there are also inconvenient truths about relationships. Today’s episode is about one of them. If you have ever spent any significant time around children, do you remember the times your heart ached for them when they discovered that life can be harsh? Where they experienced the sadness of relational pain? When your child’s network of friends all get invited to a birthday party, except your kid? When a child’s favorite pet dies? When all you teenager’s friends have been asked to homecoming, but not yours? These examples raise the question of “Who’s going to be there for me when I need them?” When children face the harsh reality that people they thought would be there for them, aren’t, we call it a "loss of innocence." You see this theme in literature all the time. To Kill a Mockingbird is a classic example. Scout, the young girl in the story comes face to face with the racism she sees in the adults her small town in the South. And loss of innocence doesn’t stop with childhood. Let me share a story that illustrates this, and then a way we can best deal with this inconvenient relationship reality. Show Outline Trip to visit our daughter in SC, when back home we had a 7” snowfall Son, Michael texted, have you made arrangements for the snow? He sent George, our 18 year-old grandson, over the next day to shovel. I hadn’t shown him how to use our snowblower I told George just to clear a path to the garage for our car, and I would finish the rest with our snowblower when I got home. George texted me when he was finished and said, “It was some of the heaviest snow I’ve ever shoveled, but I got it done.” We returned home a few days later and I stopped over to pay him. At the end of a conversation about some small talk regarding other things, George brought up his shoveling experience again and said, "I was out there a long time shoveling, and after awhile, I wondered why none of your neighbors stopped over to ask if they could help. I mean, when our neighbor Mrs. Fibeena was alive, Grant and I would always shovel her driveway. And our neighbor Don across the street, we shoveled the driveway for him, and now for his wife since he died last year. But none of your neighbors offered to help shovel. At least 24 hours had passed since the snowfall ended, and all the other driveways in the neighborhood were snow-free. But not ours. The tone of George’s voice was genuine surprise that no neighbors offered to help out with a need another neighbor had. It was so contrary to his experience, where he lived 3 miles away that he and his brother (and sister) were used to. “We help our neighbors” is a value his parents are raising him with. He wasn’t complaining or whining at all. His wistful comments came across to me as a sociological observation and reflection upon human nature, with a twinge of sadness to it. My heart ached for George, that he saw this side of human nature about our neighbors that was so contrary to his own experience. I even briefly thought "maybe we better move.” I know George sees this side of humanity on a daily basis with his peers. He’s no stranger to seeing the less flattering side of the human condition. But his surprise with our neighbors’ lack of help showed that at 18 years of age he’s lost another measure of childhood innocence. That people you would have thought would have been there for you, other adults, were not. I also sensed he was feeling bad for me, that these were the kind of neighbors we have. My heart ached for his kind and tender heart. George knew what our former neighborhood was like; he saw it first hand, with people like Kevin who lived across the street. In our former neighborhood, Kevin and I cleared driveways of snow for 3 neighbors. They were all older than us. Kevin did more than me. When my mother died in March years ago, we had a late winter snowfall of 3-4 inches the day of her funeral. I didn’t have time to snow blow the driveway before the service, as we had to leave in a hurry. But when we got home later that day, Kevin or one of the other neighbors had cleared our driveway of snow. No one asked them to. They just did it. Because our snow covered driveway told people something was wrong, so they stepped in to help.   Getting back to George’s observation, I can imagine all kinds of legitimate reasons why people didn’t help. If any of them would listen to this podcast, I’m sure they’d have a reasonable explanation for not helping out Some of them might even be irritated at me for suggesting someone should have helped. After all it’s not my neighbor’s responsibility to keep my driveway clear of snow. The fact I helped clear their drive a few times, doesn’t mean they owe me a return favor. I certainly get that. I don’t want to be critical, I just want to make an observation. And that is in this one instance with George, our current neighborhood personified what the Apostle Paul writes in Romans 12: 2, “Do not be conformed to the pattern of this world.” The pattern of this world, at least in our neighborhood, is NOT to help others in a jam. Keep to yourself. Take care of #1. Don’t extend yourself.  That’s the behavior and custom of this world.” We have nice people in our neighborhood. People are cordial and respectful of one another, and I suspect there are examples of caring and helping others that I’m not aware of. Nevertheless, my heart still aches a bit for George. And it may very well be my heart aches more for myself than him. George is a very caring person, you might remember me talking about him in an earlier episode, how even as a first or second grader, he would hold open the door to his school to let teachers and other adults enter before him. I notice in caring people, and myself, that every now and then. Not often, but every now and then, you wonder, “When is it going to be my turn? When are people going to care for me, the way I care for them? I wonder if that was what George was feeling when he shoveled snow off our driveway. I know this thought crosses my mind every now and then, and it can lead to a sense of sadness really quickly. How are we to respond to this inconvenient relational reality I described? Ask God for the wisdom and power to: Resist the temptation to assign bad motives to people who do not care for us the in the way we want to be cared for. Everyone has stuff going on in their lives we are unaware of. Cut people some slack. Extend grace. Take to heart Philippians 2:4, and obey the command, “Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourself.” As Mr. Rogers, Fred Rogers of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood tells us, “look for the helpers.” As adults, look for the helpers and try to be like them. Look for the role models we can emulate. Become a role model for others. The best version of yourself will have a strong component of caring for others. Be courageous and ask for help when you need it. Be okay with the feelings of sadness if they come. Don’t minimize or flee from it. Just sit in for awhile, and before you know it, they will pass. Especially as you move forward with being a caring person yourself. If you forget everything else, here’s the one thing I hope you remember from today’s episode. When people you thought would be there for you, fail to show up, respond with grace. Ask God to help you to be there for others, even if they don’t show up for you. Because after all, You Were Made for This. Closing As always, I welcome your thoughts about today’s episode. Maybe you have something to add to it. We all would love to hear from you. You can share your thoughts in the “Leave a Reply” box at the bottom of the show notes. Or you can send them to me in an email to john@caringforothers.org. Now for Our Relationship Quote of the Week “I don’t go by a rule book, because I lead from the heart, not the head.                                                    ~ Diana, Princess of Wales Can you imagine a dumber thought than this? Neville Chamberlain’s 1938 quote, “We have peace for our time…” Churchill’s preposition quote, “That is an outrage up with which I shall not put.” That’s all for today. See you next week. Bye for now.

Rick Lopez is the Assistant Superintendent of Placentia Yorba Linda Unified School District (PYLUSD) in Orange County, California, as well as an adjunct professor at Hope Lutheran University. He shares the core values of PYLUSD, as well as their onboarding process. Onboarding is about how you bring people into your organization. This is a lost art in the workplace and one of the most important things we can do as an organization. The better we are at onboarding, the more profitable, effective, and happy we will be. Onboarding starts at your job description, interview, application process...far before you even bring the new member to the team! Onboarding is about how you are celebrating a new employee and the way you continue to celebrate great moments! Onboarding well, shows in how you interview and follow up immediately with candidates that are treating this process as a life change. Be intentional with how you onboard based on who you are. As Mr. Lopez shows, they onboard with this in mind. When onboarding we look for Humble, Hungry (self-starter, initiative), and Smarts (more than education, it is about people). We look for Excellence, Collaboration, Integrity, Innovation. People are giving us their most precious treasure (their children)...we need to keep this in mind as we onboard the best of the best in this organization and do it well. Do we all in our organizations, onboard as if this is the most important thing we do? Onboarding keys: #1 Celebrate moments #2 Connect everyone with a Mentor Partner #3 Check in often ~ the highest level leaders to the lowest level worker ~ stay connected #4 Make the process of growth and promotion obvious for people to follow Integrate ~ Elevate ~ Celebrate --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/david-hopper3/support

In his recent book, China’s New Red Guards: The Return of Radicalism and the Rebirth of Mao Zedong, Jude D. Blanchette argues that China’s growing authoritarianism draws directly from the Mao era. Under President Xi Jinping, state control over the economy is increasing, civil society is shrinking, and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is expanding its reach in new ways. As Mr. Blanchette describes, nationalist intellectuals and activists have fed a populism that rejects Western notions of political pluralism, the rule of law, and a market economy. They draw on Mao’s writings and policies in support of a powerful CCP overseeing every aspect of Chinese society and politics. On September 18, 2019, the National Committee hosted a conversation with Jude Blanchette about his new book and Mao’s influence on contemporary Chinese politics and society. Watch event video. The villagers of a small town gather together in the square on June 27, a beautiful day, for the town lottery. In other towns, the lottery takes longer, but there are only 300 people in this village, so the lottery takes only two hours. Village children, who have just finished school for the summer, run around collecting stones. They put the stones in their pockets and make a pile in the square. Men gather next, followed by the women. Parents call their children over, and families stand together. Mr. Summers runs the lottery because he has a lot of time to do things for the village. He arrives in the square with the black box, followed by Mr. Graves, the postmaster. This black box isn’t the original box used for the lottery because the original was lost many years ago, even before the town elder, Old Man Warner, was born. Mr. Summers always suggests that they make a new box because the current one is shabby, but no one wants to fool around with tradition. Mr. Summers did, however, convince the villagers to replace the traditional wood chips with slips of paper. Mr. Summers mixes up the slips of paper in the box. He and Mr. Graves made the papers the night before and then locked up the box at Mr. Summers’s coal company. Before the lottery can begin, they make a list of all the families and households in the village. Mr. Summers is sworn in. Some people remember that in the past there used to be a song and salute, but these have been lost. Tessie Hutchinson joins the crowd, flustered because she had forgotten that today was the day of the lottery. She joins her husband and children at the front of the crowd, and people joke about her late arrival. Mr. Summers asks whether anyone is absent, and the crowd responds that Dunbar isn’t there. Mr. Summers asks who will draw for Dunbar, and Mrs. Dunbar says she will because she doesn’t have a son who’s old enough to do it for her. Mr. Summers asks whether the Watson boy will draw, and he answers that he will. Mr. Summers then asks to make sure that Old Man Warner is there too. Mr. Summers reminds everyone about the lottery’s rules: he’ll read names, and the family heads come up and draw a slip of paper. No one should look at the paper until everyone has drawn. He calls all the names, greeting each person as they come up to draw a paper. Mr. Adams tells Old Man Warner that people in the north village might stop the lottery, and Old Man Warner ridicules young people. He says that giving up the lottery could lead to a return to living in caves. Mrs. Adams says the lottery has already been given up in other villages, and Old Man Warner says that’s “nothing but trouble.” Mr. Summers finishes calling names, and everyone opens his or her papers. Word quickly gets around that Bill Hutchinson has “got it.” Tessie argues that it wasn’t fair because Bill didn’t have enough time to select a paper. Mr. Summers asks whether there are any other households in the Hutchinson family, and Bill says no, because his married daughter draws with her husband’s family. Mr. Summers asks how many kids Bill has, and he answers that he has three. Tessie protests again that the lottery wasn’t fair. Mr. Graves dumps the papers out of the box onto the ground and then puts five papers in for the Hutchinsons. As Mr. Summers calls their names, each member of the family comes up and draws a paper. When they open their slips, they find that Tessie has drawn the paper with the black dot on it. Mr. Summers instructs everyone to hurry up. The villagers grab stones and run toward Tessie, who stands in a clearing in the middle of the crowd. Tessie says it’s not fair and is hit in the head with a stone. Everyone begins throwing stones at her. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/hmphaudiobooks/support

In 1995, a revamped and reformatted Batman made his comeback to the big screen in Batman Forever, a film that presented a stark contrast to the grim Gotham of Tim Burton’s Batman and Batman Returns. It was a campier—and certainly more kid friendly—take on the “Caped Crusader.” That, in and of itself, means almost nothing. What mattered was the movie was a huge hit, grossing over $184 million at the domestic box office and besting the diminishing profits of Returns. Thus, the natural course was to green light a sequel and fast. Batman & Robin was set for release just two years (nearly to the day) after Forever, a tall order considering the size and scope of a typical summer blockbuster. Joel Schumacher—who’d helmed its predecessor—would again direct. Shockingly, despite the truncated production time, it filmed without a hitch. There weren’t problems behind-the-scenes, but upon release, they were very apparent ones on the screen. Instead of harnessing what worked about Forever—however little that actually was—the filmmakers opted to double down on the camp, skimp on the importance of plot, and jam the film with frivolous closeups of bat gadgets and body parts. Like Mr. Freeze himself, the heart of this movie is just a cold lump, staggering its way through a runtime that—even at just two hours—feels bloated. Alas, this diatribe is more than reflective waxing. Batman & Robin bombed. Cinema goers were not interested in its dogged insistence to sell them toys. As a result—in addition to its infamous place in Batman lore—it’s the lowest grossing live action Batman movie to date, garnering just $107 million at the domestic box office and floundering just as much worldwide (it only made $238 million, almost $100 million less than Forever). Yet, knowing all of this, it’s still something you must see. It’s the Titanic drifting toward the iceberg. You know it’s going to be bad, but you can’t look away. Why deny yourself the pleasure of watching it with wide-eyed bewilderment? As Mr. Freeze once so eloquently said, “Chill” — sit back, grab an icy, cold beer, and enjoy as I, the Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), and the Irate Lover don our rubber bat nipples and soldier headlong into the blizzard of bad puns. Baked and Awake October 30th 2018 Halloween Special Number Two   A Ghost story by Samuel Longthorne Clemens aka Mark Twain   Disclaimer:  Baked and Awake is a show about weed.  There will be cannabis consumed, and discussed.  Please keep this in mind when listening at work, in public spaces, or at church. What’s that?  Well, I don’t know why you’d be listening in church either- I’m just saying maybe it’s not the best idea even if mass doesn’t start for a little while and you’re bored.  Why are you there early anyway isn’t church at the same time every week? Get your shit together, people.. This Halloween season has settled upon me like a haunting of an old, recently abandoned property on the edge of town.  It’s almost impossible to resist, and at a certain point rather than struggle against it, one does well to simply lean into it, and go with the flow..   In keeping with the spooky vibe that seeped into us during last week’s episode- Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s The Rime of the Ancyent Maryner, Faithful listeners will recall that I narrated the mortifying misadventures of an Old and otherworldly Seaman who, having reaped the grisly consequences of his damnable act- the murder most foul of an innocent albatross, the mascot of his mates no less.  Consequences for the Mariner in the form of the swift demise of the entire crew of the ship upon which he served, only to suffer the eternal agony of re telling the story of his own final, benighted experiences to reluctant audiences forevermore..  For those of you who missed it and are for some crazy reason just arriving now, I say to you, GO BACK!  Go back, and listen to that story first so that you can get yourself in the mood for more epic classic horror, this time brought to you by an even more well known and dearly loved Samuel than our erstwhile Coleridge.  Indeed, our story today was written by none other than Samuel Longthorne Clemens, popularly known around the world by his nom de plume, Mark Twain.   As Mr. Twain is one of the most prolific and widely read authors of his time, enjoying the sort of recognition and general acclaim in society that we often see today in the public’s adoration of Television and Movie Stars of the A list variety. Falling somewhere between a Garrison Keillor and Stephen King in terms of style, Twain's’ most famous works, the Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn are treasured and read to this day, despite what may be, through the fraught lenses of today’s readers’ at times shocking portrayals of both Black Americans themselves, and the White characters in Twain’s novels, only sometimes shown in a reflective light themselves. Personally, my memories of reading these classics has dimmed considerably over the years.  All I remember from them is an odd feeling of unease now and then at the harsh words directed at or dismissive treatment evinced towards Twain’s Black characters like the iconic runaway Slave, Jim.   Though he was on the run for his life, and a criminal in the eyes of many who must have first read the story of Huckleberry Finn, I do remember Jim being strongly humanized, probably in a way that had seldom if ever been attempted before. For that I was profoundly grateful, even as a young boy who had never at that point seriously pondered racism, and where and how I might encounter it throughout my life. I say these things not by way of apology for Mark Twain, for as I did hasten to observe just there- I believe history remembers him as an ally of the oppressed and downtrodden. Children, Runaway slaves, and all.   Today’s tale however, is not one of youthful adventures and the snubbing of authority in the midst of a recently war torn America. Rather, it is one that will in turns provide suspense, a small dose of unease slowly building into profound discomfort for the reader, and abject terror for the protagonist, finally giving way to a bit of levity before allowing us to continue on our way..   Oh.  I almost forgot.  I’ll be reading this story whilst attempting to smoke to it’s conclusion, a hefty and heavily infused “Cross Joint”, which if you have never seen one please allow me to direct you to my instagram account at @Baked_and_Awake, where you can see this creation in all its glory.  Though holy in it’s form, I fully expect and indeed hope to be personally possessed by SOMETHING by the conclusion of this little… experiment. Wish me Godspeed upon this, my latest and greatest Boondoggle..   And now that you have the full picture of what’s happening here behind the mic, Let us then, to  Mark Twain’s “A Ghost Story”   Resources: The Cardiff Giant is a purported "petrified man" uncovered on October 16, 1869, by workers digging a well behind the barn of William C. John Hudson and I return to the films of Antonio Margheriti! This time we stick to the spaghetti western theme of our last episode together with 1970's AND GOD SAID TO CAIN, but it is important to note that this movie is a bit of a hybrid. It incorporates elements of horror films to give it's tale of revenge some added kick. In fact, there are several sequences that look very much like something that could have been lifted from one of the director's Gothic tales from the 1960's. The majority of the story takes place over a single stormy night in which death visits dozens of six-gun carrying bad guys as they end up on the wrong side of a bullet or two. Add to that a lead performance from the amazing Klaus Kinski and you have the makings of some western tinged nightmare fuel! I've included in the show the excellent theme song for the film called Rocks, Blood and Sand. It's sung by Don Powell who also wrote the lyrics with Carlo Savina's incredible music making this a real classic. It's one of my favorite western themes of all time and I think you'll agree. As Mr, Hudson and I discuss this one we take note of the script's smart timeline, the interesting choice of hair color, the odd use of red wardrobe for one particular character and how using men's fear against them is often the easiest way to prevail in a fight. I then take the time to put forth my pet theory about the nature of Kinski's character while John again finds a place for an invisible chimp. Sometimes I hate that man! If you have any comments or question we can be reached at thebloodypit@gmail.com or over on the Bloody Pit FaceBook page. Thank you for downloading and listening to the show. Have a happy Halloween!

Cole Rosengren is a senior reporter for Waste Dive. Cole has many years of front-line experience with the waste industry having worked in many environments where he observed a myriad of problems that exist in the handling of waste and recycling. With a passion for forward-thinking solutions to planetary problems that the waste industry poses, Cole seeks to write and report on the pertinent issues that are shaping our conversation about waste and sustainability. Mr. Rosengren holds a BFA in writing and publishing from Emerson College as well as an MA in urban reporting (CUNY Graduate School of Journalism). The waste and recycling journalist dives into a dense discussion of the many issues facing the global waste industry. As Mr. Rosengren states, China's unfathomable exponential growth into a dominant global industry player has increased their need for raw materials and scrap. Thus for many years, they have been the final stop for recycled materials that they could turn into new products and export out. However, Rosengren states this ‘perfect circle' of sorts may have reached its endpoint. With the launch of their National Sword policy, China announced that they would no longer take 24 various types of recycled materials. This policy comes on the heels of China's Green Fence policy just five years previous, which introduced new standards for lower contamination levels for the recycling.  The new policy will certainly be felt around the world, and will especially strike a blow to recycling operators in China, many of which rely heavily on the ongoing import of a wide assortment of raw materials. And while the retooling of China's recycling intake process will be an opportunity for China to begin cleaning up their own environment, the economic impact will be an adjustment for material exporters as they feel the sting of stringent regulations. Rosengren discusses some of the issues that are becoming pivotal points in the conversation, post-China's new rules. Perhaps a silver lining for environmentalists could be that China's harsher regulations are driving the push toward a decrease in the use of plastics and single-use paper, etc. in general. But flipping the coin, American businesses and governments are taking a hit when it comes to recycling, as China's policies have driven up the cost of recycling domestically. As these costs go up, some communities are taxing the recycling, while others are ramping up their efforts to inform the community about proper recycling. And other communities are taking more draconian measures to enforce recycling, even to the point of refusal of pickup if materials are not sorted properly.  Rosengren explains how businesses and manufacturers alike are engaged in a fair amount of finger-pointing in regard to who is to blame for the current waste dilemma. And in regard to governance, the EPA largely views these issues as state and local concerns, thus leaving the decisions, and quagmire, in the hands of various officials on the state level. Some states are even turning to private funds to invest further, and more heavily, into recycling infrastructure.  The waste expert details how the next wave of the movement toward a reduced waste planet is the rethinking of how we consume, in that we have developed a culture that has signed off on the ‘buy anything and everything as long as you recycle it” mindset. Perhaps, ultimately, it is time to rephrase the question to, “do I even need that,” to cut down on waste overall. But the wheels of change are slow and it's up to everyone to contribute to the solutions that will help solve our growing problem with waste. On a positive note, as the public becomes more informed, for the most part, they do want to be a part of the solution.

Mentorship is so important in the development of oneself. Finding a mentor who is willing to guide you through the challenges you face in your career, sport, relationships or personal growth can be a life changer! In this episode I draw some parallels from the teaching of Mr. Miyagi in the Karate Kid movie with your career and development of self. If you want to truly maximize your potential you need to live through the eyes of a trusted mentor. Daniel San thought he was the king of the castle back in his hometown. It wasn’t until he hit the streets of the Valley that he realized he was over his head and needed guidance. So many of us live in our business, surrounded by others who think the same, and we climb to the top of our circle. Its comfy! You need to put yourself in situations that make you feel scared, skin your knee and be vulnerable to truly grow. I have been hosting my Coach Glass Mentorship for the past 5 years. I take 10 attendees each year and help them take their brand, skill set, business and personal development to the next level. If you are a Glistener and not sure if this mentorship is for you…then it is not for you. I believe you need to be all in or all out in life. As Mr. Miyagi said, “Left safe, right safe, middle…get squish like grape” Listen to this episode and find yourself a mentor. Be strong enough to find your weakness and then find a mentor that embodies the trait you wish to develop. GO!!!!!! In this podcast episode, we provide a speech by Paul Harvey which is called “The pledge of America’s first citizens.” Mr. Harvey gave this speech annually about the price paid by many of the Founding Fathers for their involvement in the American Revolutionary War. As Mr. Harvey states, some people go to war since they have nothing to lose, in this case, the Founding Fathers had everything to lose since they were already men of influence, power, and wealth. They risked it all for the rest of the soon-to-be Americans and us as their descendants. Some lost it all in the process. On Independence Day, it is good to remember their sacrifices for us. In addition to this audio episode, I also provide three PDF documents: first, a copy of the Declaration of Independence, second, an article about the Founding Fathers, and finally the backstory about composing the Declaration of Independence. However, when you add a musical dynamo named Joe Buono, you have the WEST JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL CONCERT BAND ..... and that makes it stand out above the rest. Mr. Buono is more than a director ...... he is a leader. In only two years on the West podium, Joe has molded one of the finest bands in the state. Their two district ratings of "1" and their latest success as a First Division rated band at the state festival is proof again that indeed, "WEST IS BEST' and I know that "Joe made it so!" Indeed, in addition to being a professional French Hornist who was highly in demand, Mr. Buono was a builder of great bands, a true leader, a developer of young minds and talent, and a terrific teacher who turned all of his students into successful men and women who always strived for the best and never stopped achieving top status! Some people are in it to sell more, some people for the sense of importance that comes from people knowing who you are, and some for a variety of other reasons. But what holds so many people back when it comes to effectively communicating with your audience, building it, and connecting with it in a strong way, is the bravery required to really be vulnerable and authentic with your following. As Mr. Kim says, “If you’re holding on to something that you’re scared to share, chances are that sharing it will really connect with your audience.” This is what separates those who are able to turn their personal brand into a powerful force from those you struggle. Listen to today’s episode to find out more about why personal branding is so valuable in today’s environment, and how to go about building it, all on today’s episode of Results Radio. “You have to sell people not only on your product/service, but on yourself” - Leonard Kim Highlights Failure is part of the journey. This video was delivered at the opening of the Vision 20 meeting in China (March 29th to April 1st) at Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, China. As the Editor’s Note in the text points out, the V20 brought together scholars from various international policy fields, think tank leaders, civil society and private sector representatives and various government leaders, all to generate ideas and actionable items for the long and medium term in global governance. Paul Martin was the Prime Minister of Canada from 2003 to 2006 and the Minister of Finance from 1993 to 2002. Mr. Martin was the inaugural chair of the Finance Ministers’ G20. Mr. Martin not only was central in setting up this first version of the G20 but was one of the earliest advocates of a leaders’ level summit – what eventually became the G20. As Mr. Martin wrote in 2005 in the venerable journal Foreign Affairs, “The main justification for an L-20 can be expressed very simply: the boundaries between countries are growing fainter. Globalization is not a process that can be turned on and off at will.” In this interview with Mr. Martin, our Senior Editor explores with the former Prime Minister his assessment of the Leaders’ G20. Where has the G20 been a success; where has it failed to meet the expectations of Mr. Martin? What recommendations does Mr. Martin have for this most critical of leaders’ summits in the hopes of making the Summit more effective?

Hank Aaron “You can only milk a cow for so long, then you’re left holding the pail.” What kind of plans have you made for the future? Do you expect everything to go as it always has, or do you have plans to cope with pitfalls you may eventually face? Many things could happen to change your current status. Loss of your job, a health issue, a drastic increase in utilities, taxes or fees, or even a lawsuit or divorce can make a sudden shift in your ability to cope with your circumstances. As Mr. Aaron put it, do you have another cow if the one you are currently milking runs dry? Having a backup cow in the barn is a really good idea. In our last episode of Daggers Of The Mind, a quote from George Takei was featured. In his book “ To The Stars”, he said that as soon as he was earning some money acting, he began buying real estate rental properties. By its very nature, acting doesn’t always give a steady paycheck, he wanted a more stable form of income while being free to accept and turn down roles as he saw fit. At its most basic application, your extra cow could be a savings account you slowly accumulate over time to cover emergencies, and eventually retirement. Start a steady contribution to a plan you don’t have easy access to, and then some type of savings you could access in small emergencies such as unexpected car repairs. According to Suze Orman:If you are worried about job security and do not have an adequate emergency fund (ideally eight months' worth of living expenses stashed away in a federally insured bank or credit union), you need to focus more on saving money than paying down the balance on your credit cards. We could all use some adjustments to our financial lives. Make sure you have an adequate backup, but then continue to milk that cow while it is in the barn!! Hank Aaron on Twitter Suze Orman on Facebook ------------------------------------- Christopher Walken “Words are little bombs, and they have a lot of energy inside them.” Have you ever considered the power of your words? In centuries past the most respected people in the world were those who had the best command of language. Words can move people to love, hate, and take actions they would not have considered, such as going to war.Superstitious people were often afraid of a witch or warlock casting a “spell” on them. Have you ever wondered why it was called a “spell”? I believe many times a person accused of being a witch was just a person who was skilled at persuasion, spelling it out so skillfully they were able to change others minds as if by magic. Fear and words of hysteria did the rest, and sometimes in extreme cases, resulted in a burning at the stake. While we are speaking of burning, in the Bible, The book of James chapter 3 the tongue is spoken of quite fluently. Verse 2: For in many things we offend all. If a man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body.Verses 5 and 6: Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth! And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on the fire the course of nature; and is set on fire of hell. I assure you this is not turning into a sermon, but this has to be some of the most direct words in literature of the power, for good for evil, of our words. Our words are likened to fire. Fire is great when used properly to cook food, to make our cars run, or to save lives. Then there are forest fires. They usually start from a very small spark from a passing ATV, a forgotten camp fire, or a single match by an arsonist. One small, harsh word can create a world of hurt when it gets out of control in the rumor mill. One small, encouraging word can change the world. What you say and how you say it, can change the course of someone’s day, and sometimes their life. Every time you speak, the person you address, and even those who overhear can’t help but be changed by it. Why not try to help those you meet instead of cursing them? From the website SpreadKindness.org comes this quote from the Dalai Lama:This is my simple religion. There is no need for temples; no need for complicated philosophy. Our own brain, our own heart is our temple; the philosophy is kindness. Raun Kaufman on Autism and Son-Rise

Former CEO of the Autism Treatment Center of America Raun Kaufman was the first recipient of the Son-Rise program, developed by his parents in response to his childhood diagnosis of severe autism. Though his diagnosis was presented by doctors as incurable, the Kaufmans, who had recently engaged with the 1970s human potential movement, remained hopeful with the understanding that if they decided the situation was hopeless, it would become so. They engaged intensively with their son, joining in and participating with his autistic repetative behaviors (against medical advice), seeking to create rapport. As Mr. Kaufman began attending to and engaging with his parents, they then used that hook to challenge him and teach necessary interpersonal and communication skills. Today the son-rise program offers an alternative to the dominant applied behavior analysis model which seeks to treat autism by first addressing the autistic child's difficulty forming relationships rather than their odd behaviors. The Center offers intensive parent training in the son-rise intervention model (as parents - not professionals - deliver this care) from their Massachusetts campus. Having been developed by non-scientists outside the university, the efficacy of the son-rise program has not been established with clinical trials. However, Mr. Kaufman suggests that recently resarch has been occuring which will shortly be published.

As Care Crowd members have learned, in the effort to ‘make things better’, it is true that teaming makes it easier. That said, when a new change arises that will require an altered direction/process/etc in an organization, possibly requiring new ways of doing things, where is a newly formed team supposed to get answers or ideas? As Mr. Dylan said, the answer is blown’ in the wind. When building a solution with a team, it is crucial to get key information injected as quickly as possible up front so the team can factor this information into scope/ideas/timelines and so forth. Springing key info at the last minute is a sure way to induce paralysis, panic and uncertainty into a team that is then expected to be creative on the spot with no/little time to fully develop a solution and chunk out its implementation plan. When trying to pluck those ideas from the breeze, be sure you take time and information into account as the wind can sometimes be fickle or unpredictable and catching those butterflies may be more difficult than anticipated.

This time in 2006 was the last time I saw Bobby Pickett alive. When he came to the BluePower studio he told us he wasn't well and jokingly said, "We'd better make this a good show as it may be my last."I don't think it was quite Bobby's last show but very close. On the 25th of April, 2007, the world lost a wonderful human being and a gifted entertainer.I can't think of a better show for Halloween than this show featuring our dear departed friend....Bobby Pickett. _____________________________________________Ever since I've known Bob, I have marveled at his elegance of manner, his ultra-quick wit and his well focused insight to character. We have recorded dozens of commercials and a whole lot of bits together. (He as talent and I as engineer) Through hours of being on the other side of the glass, I gained a great deal of respect for this talented man's work.Forty-five years ago, a tiny record lable called GARPAX released a single (45 rpm record) to the world. The A side, written by Bob and Lenny Capeci is titled "Monster Mash" and has become synonymous with the holiday, Halloween. There are very few people in the world whom haven't heard, "They did the mash....they did the Monster Mash. It was a graveyard smash!"And smash it was. This one song has kept Bobby "Boris" Pickett in groceries for forty-five years. and....as Bob mentions, "It's more than paid the rent."Bob will be appearing at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Secaucus, New Jersey on the 27th, 28th and 29th of October at the 16th Annual Chiller Theatre Expo along with Paul Reubens (Pee-Wee Herman), the enchanting Elvira, plus Adam West and Burt Ward of Batman fame. His book, Monster Mash, Half Dead In Hollywood is a tremendous read and tells Mr. Pickett's history from the time he was born through today. Bob tells the truth about Hollywood and the denizens that dwell there. As Mr. Pickett says...."They drag me out for one night a year. It's my time to howl."It's good to hear you howl again my friend.Tonight's music is....1)...."It's Alive"....Bobby "Boris" Pickett2)...."Dead Man's Party"....Oingo-Boingo3)...."Monster Mash"....Bobby "Boris" Pickett4)...."Gallow's Pole"....Jimmy Page and Robert Plant5)...."Werewolves Of London"....Warren Zevon6)...."Sinister Stomp"....Bobby "Boris" Pickett7)...."Got My Mojo Workin' "....Muddy Waters8)...."Blood Bank Blues"....Bobby "Boris" PickettIncidental music composed by: Dave Roberts. The picture of Bobby Pickett at the top of the page was taken by Jimmy Wachtel during the recording of Pickett's version of  Warren Zevon's, "Werewolves Of London".Listen to....Half Dead In Hollywood....With Guest....Bobby "Boris" Pickett!Go to the superb website of Bobby "Boris" Pickett!Have a safe and sane HALLOWEEN!

Consider for a moment that life is not a random event or an accident of circumstance and that the essence of who we are continues, even beyond death. In his book 'Seeking Soul Mates, Spirit Guides, and Past Lives', we can discover new meaning to our lives and garner valuable insights into our experiences! With an artful blend of scientific research and heartrending narratives, this book demonstrates how we can recognize and embrace the spiritual relationships that determine our life’s path. Taking us on a journey, illustrated by his professional and personal experiences, Mr. Scheinberg offers us a fresh and intimate glimpse of the fascinating unseen world of eternal love and the enduring soul. And in so doing, he encourages and inspires us to embark on a soul searching expedition of our own. Mr. Scheinberg, a psychotherapist with twenty-eight years in private practice helping children, adults, couples, and families, is the director of Sunrise Counseling Center in Bay Shore, Long Island, New York. Founded by Mr. Scheinberg in 1993, the Center now has a staff of 24 clinical practitioners serving 1000 people each month. As Mr. Scheinberg has evolved spiritually, he has chosen to devote more time and energy to professional development that is directly associated with what one may call “the life force”. This research has included a wide range of training involving mystical and energy practices that relate to life, love, karma, and overall mind-body health. These experiences include ancient and modern forms of meditation, prayer, hypnotism, chakra clearing, psychic development, angel communication, mediumship, remote viewing, and alternative healing modalities (Reiki and Reconnective healing). This promises to be an amazingly powerful show! Don't miss it!

Guest: Sathyu Sarangi Host: Larry Kaskel, MD Many of us remember the chemical disaster that occurred in Bhopal, India in December 1984. Twenty-five years after what many call the world's worst industrial disaster, estimates suggest more than 100,000 people, including children of survivors of the initial disaster, still suffer illnesses that are linked to this ongoing tragedy. Sathyu Sarangi arrived in Bhopal the day after the disaster, expecting to serve for a short time as a volunteer in the short-term relief efforts. Instead, he has spent the last quarter-century advocating for the allocation of proper health care, clean water and other basic necessities for disaster-affected people in Bhopal. Today, Mr. Sarangi is the managing director of the Sambhavna Trust Clinic in Bhopal, a vibrant clinic that provides free medical care, community health education classes and other vital services to nearly 25,000 individuals. As Mr. Sarangi explains, with many of the local hospitals struggling under the weight of corruption, inefficient management and a disinclination to care for disaster survivors and their children, Sambhavna offers the people of Bhopal hope for a better, healthier future. He joins host Dr. Larry Kaskel to share the story of the people of Bhopal and their ongoing struggle, and explains what we, as ...

Our Miss Brooks, an American situation comedy, began as a radio hit in 1948 and migrated to television in 1952, becoming one of the earlier hits of the so-called Golden Age of Television, and making a star out of Eve Arden (1908-1990) as comely, wisecracking, but humane high school English teacher Connie Brooks. The show hooked around Connie's daily relationships with Madison High School students, colleagues, and pompous principal Osgood Conklin (Gale Gordon), not to mention favourite student Walter Denton (future television and Rambo co-star Richard Crenna, who fashioned a higher-pitched voice to play the role) and biology teacher Philip Boynton ( Jeff Chandler), the latter Connie's all-but-unrequited love interest, who saw science everywhere and little else anywhere.THIS EPISODE:January 16, 1949.
