The BMJ called Bad Influence "a timely and eye-opening investigation...essential reading," but spoiler: I don't agree. I found the reporting solid, and she made good points about how social media prioritizes stories over science, but I disagreed with nearly every solution. As an American who values free speech and medical autonomy, I want control over my health and freedom to speak. The author's UK, socialized-medicine perspective leads her to lean toward regulation and centralized answers — that's just not my worldview. I gave the book two stars: worth reading if you want to understand the problems, but don't expect the proposed fixes to support medical autonomy nor freedom of speech. Are you still exhausted even though you're doing everything you can for your Hashimoto's? The problem might be something you literally cannot feel. Vitamin D is one of the most common root cause triggers for Hashimoto's, and most women have no idea their levels are low. You cannot feel it when your vitamin D is low. You cannot feel it when it is high. The only way to know is to test. And if your levels are not where they need to be, your immune system is missing one of its most important tools for calming down. In this episode, Esther breaks down why vitamin D is a root cause trigger for Hashimoto's, how it works in your immune system, and what you actually need to know about getting your levels up, whether that is through summer sun exposure or smart supplementation. In this episode, you will learn: Why vitamin D acts like a brake system for your immune system and what happens when those brakes fail What optimal vitamin D levels actually look like and why "not deficient" is not good enough How summer sun exposure works, why it is not as simple as going outside, and what to do about it year round Ready to map out all of your root causes? Why does Hashimoto's happen in the first place and what can you actually do about it? If you have been diagnosed and you are wondering what caused this, you are not alone. Most women with Hashimoto's are told what they have but not why they have it. That missing piece is exactly what this episode is about. In episode 202, Esther kicks off the Summer Root Cause Series by walking through the root causes of Hashimoto's, the three things every single person with an autoimmune condition has in common, and the eight most common triggers that can set the whole process in motion. In this episode, you'll learn: Why genetics load the gun but lifestyle and environment pull the trigger How leaky gut keeps your immune system working overtime and why an overworked immune system starts attacking things it shouldn't The eight most common Hashimoto's triggers and why knowing yours is the turning point Hit play and find out what's actually driving your Hashimoto's. Did someone send you this episode? Or maybe you've been living with Hashimoto's for a while and you're still not sure you fully understand what's actually happening in your body? Either way, you're in the right place. This episode covers the basics — what your thyroid does, what Hashimoto's really is, and why so many women are stuck even when their labs look "fine" and they're doing everything they're supposed to do. In episode 201, recorded in honor of World Thyroid Day, Esther breaks down exactly what your thyroid does, why Hashimoto's is more than a thyroid problem, and why missing the autoimmune piece means the attack on your thyroid never stops. In this episode, you'll learn: Why your thyroid affects every single cell in your body — and what happens when it's not producing or converting enough hormone The most common symptoms of hypothyroidism and why they show up differently for everyone Why Hashimoto's has two parts, and why missing the autoimmune piece means the attack on your thyroid never stops Hit play — and share this one with someone who needs to understand what you're going through. Have you ever wondered if what you eat is making your Hashimoto's worse — or if changing your diet could actually make a real difference? If you've heard of the AIP diet but felt overwhelmed, confused about where to start, or worried it meant giving up food you love forever, this episode is for you. The modified AIP diet Hashimoto's patients are using today looks very different from what it was 15 years ago — and the research behind it is finally catching up. In this episode, Esther sits down with Mickey Trescott, functional nutrition expert, Hashimoto's patient, and author of the brand new book The New Autoimmune Protocol. Mickey shares how AIP has evolved from a single sentence in functional medicine circles into a research-backed, two-phase protocol with human studies to support it — including two studies specific to Hashimoto's. In this episode, you'll learn: Why AIP is a tool and a process, not a permanent diet — and what it's actually designed to do What modified AIP is, how it differs from core AIP, and why it may be more realistic for your real life Why preparation matters more than the diet itself, and the two exercises Mickey uses to set people up for success before they change a single thing they eat Hit play and find out if the modified AIP diet might be the missing piece in your Hashimoto's strategy. Have you ever been approached about a health product through a friend, a Facebook post, or someone you follow online — and wondered if it was actually worth it? Network marketing and MLMs are one of the most divisive topics in the health world. Mention them in a Facebook group and you'll get strong opinions on both sides. But when you have Hashimoto's and you're trying to figure out what products might actually support your root causes, you need a clear-headed look at what these companies do well and where they fall short. In episode 195, Esther shares her honest, personal take on network marketing and Hashimoto's. This is not a cheerleader episode and it's not a takedown. It's a balanced, practical look at what to consider before you buy or join. In this episode, you'll learn: Why network marketing companies are often ahead of mainstream education when it comes to supplements and root cause support The real financial picture — including why the dream of full-time income rarely matches reality and what tax benefits might actually apply How to evaluate a company and its products so you don't get burned by bad information, formula changes, or a compensation plan that doesn't pay out Hit play and get the balanced view you've been looking for. Are you doing all the things (the supplements, the protocols, the late-night Pinterest research) and still not moving forward with Hashimoto's? You might not have an information problem. You might have an overwhelm problem. Hashimoto's overwhelm is one of the most unrecognized barriers to getting better. And the hardest part is that the search for answers can actually make things worse! Every new protocol adds another decision. Every new supplement adds another layer of stress. And stress is one of the biggest root cause triggers for Hashimoto's. The plan itself can become part of the problem. In episode 193, Esther breaks down why more information is not the answer and what actually is. In this episode, you'll learn: Why accumulating strategies is not the same as making progress with Hashimoto's How the information environment is designed to keep you spinning — and what to do instead Why structure reduces decision fatigue, lowers your stress load, and creates real forward momentum Hit play and find out where to actually start. Have you ever tried to explain your fatigue to someone and watched their eyes glaze over? Because when most people hear the word "fatigue," they think tired. But you and I both know it is so much more than that. The Invisible Kingdom: Reimagining Chronic Illness by Meghan O'Rourke is a memoir that finally puts words to what so many women with chronic illness have been feeling for years. O'Rourke spent decades searching for answers, navigating a medical system that was not built for people like her, and learning — slowly — how to move forward without a tidy resolution. Her first diagnosis was Hashimoto's, and the story she tells will feel very familiar. In this bonus episode, I'm reviewing The Invisible Kingdom by Meghan O'Rourke. In this episode, you'll hear: Why O'Rourke's description of fatigue is one of the most accurate things written about chronic illness What this book gets right about the gap in patient care — and why it matters for you Why I appreciated that this story does not have a fairy tale ending, and what that honesty offers instead Hit play and find out if this is your next great read. Are you treating your Hashimoto's symptoms without ever asking what caused them in the first place? Most women with Hashimoto's spend years chasing symptoms and never get to the real problem. In this episode, we are going upstream. Your symptoms are not the problem. They are the result of the problem. In this episode you will learn: Why upstream and root cause mean the same thing and why that matters for your health How your root causes are never just one thing and what to look at instead What your very first step should be after a Hashimoto's diagnosis If you are ready to stop guessing and start identifying your Hashimoto's root causes, this episode is your starting point.

Have you been told gut health matters for Hashimoto's, but felt overwhelmed trying to figure out where to start or what actually fits your life? If you have Hashimoto's, gut health is not optional. Are quick fixes actually helping your Hashimoto's, or are they quietly keeping you stuck? As a new year begins, it is tempting to chase the next solution, supplement, or routine that promises fast results. But for women with Hashimoto's, that approach often leads to more frustration and more fatigue. In this episode, I walk through what I am intentionally leaving behind in 2026 and what I am choosing instead to better support autoimmune health. The main takeaway is simple: sustainable foundations matter more than quick fixes. When we reduce stress, support the nervous system, and focus on how the body actually works, everything else becomes easier to manage. This episode outlines the mindset shifts and health habits that align with long-term regulation, not burnout. In this episode, you will learn: Why small, repeatable habits support Hashimoto's better than extreme health efforts How stress, routines, and daily rhythms directly affect autoimmune health What foundational health practices matter most according to Hashimoto's 2026 trends Press play to listen to this episode and start rethinking what truly supports your health this year. What if your teen's painful periods, anxiety, or constant worry are early red flags for Hashimoto's and hypothyroidism? In this eye-opening episode of the Health with Hashimoto's podcast, host Esther Yunkin sits down with quadruple board-certified physician Dr. David Bilstrom to explore how hormone imbalances like estrogen dominance can show up in teenagers—long before thyroid issues are diagnosed. Dr. Bilstrom shares that these “rev without calm” patterns (think bad cramps, heavy flows, panic attacks, and racing thoughts) are often tied to estrogen dominance, gut disruption, and hidden infections. The good news? Addressing them early can reverse or prevent Hashimoto's, hypothyroidism, and even other autoimmune conditions for this generation and beyond. You'll walk away with hope and practical insights, including why Hashimoto's in teenagers is rising and how simple steps can protect future health. 3 Key Takeaways You'll Learn: How hormonal menstrual issues in teens signal estrogen dominance—the hidden driver behind 80% of autoimmune diseases like Hashimoto's and hypothyroidism. The gut-infection-hormone connection and why fixing leaky gut and clearing infections can calm symptoms fast and prevent chronic illness. Why early intervention (ideally by age 19) can change the trajectory for teenagers with hypothyroidism & Hashimoto's—and even pass on better health to future generations.
