Musical Chairs returns this week with one of those classic Episodes where the guys are at opposite ends of the spectrum. This week, Dave covers Bad Religion, one of the bands primarily responsible for the revival of the punk rock scene in Southern California in the 1990s. Known for their impeccable harmonies, smart lyrics, and unforgettable style, Bad Religion has survived many lineup changes (save for Greg Graffin) and has been going strong since 1980. At the other end of the spectrum, Patrick covers the biggest musical star on the planet, Taylor Swift. While neither Patrick nor Dave would consider themselves a Swifty, there is a heathy appreciation and respect for her music and for all she has accomplished. From sold-out tours worldwide to her impact on the NFL and everything in between, Patrick asks a thought-provoking question: Is Taylor Swift now bigger than The Beatles or Michael Jackson ever was?Today's hosts: Dave Ungar (@AttitudeAgg) and Patrick O' Dowd (@WrestlngRealist)Episode 6 of Season 4 of Musical Chairs focuses on Bad Religion & Taylor SwiftAbout Chairshot RadioThe rebirth of Chairshot Radio will see a rotating cast of hosts delivering you a new show EVERY day. Rockshow Episode 197 Bad Religion Bad Religion is an American punk rock band formed in Los Angeles, California, in 1980. They are known for their melodic hardcore sound, thought-provoking lyrics, and vocal harmonies. The band's lineup has undergone some changes over the years, but founding members Greg Graffin (vocals) and Brett Gurewitz (guitar) have remained consistent fixtures. Bad Religion has released numerous albums, including classics like “Suffer,” “No Control,” and “Recipe for Hate.” Their music often explores themes such as religion, politics, society, and philosophy. The band has maintained a dedicated fan base and is considered influential in the punk rock genre. https://badreligion.com/ https://www.facebook.com/badreligion?mibextid=LQQJ4d https://www.instagram.com/badreligionband?igsh=NTlnZnRvY2l4bnFy https://x.com/badreligion?s=21&t=Mzw5de5zsR-SDDbhyzH0Lg https://youtube.com/@badreligionband?si=Xq_vl551P0Xuy-yR https://open.spotify.com/artist/2yJwXpWAQOOl5XFzbCxLs9?si=U2liXydxScujkoyMgbIdhA #BadReligion #PunkRock #GregGraffin #BrettGurewitz #PunkMusic #MelodicHardcore #PunkLegends #PunkRockBand #PunkLyrics #PunkPhilosophy Please follow us on Youtube,Facebook,Instagram,Twitter,Patreon and at www.gettinglumpedup.com https://linktr.ee/RobRossi Get your T-shirt at https://www.prowrestlingtees.com/gettinglumpedup And https://www.bonfire.com/store/getting-lumped-up/ Subscribe to the channel and hit the like button This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/rob-rossi/support https://www.patreon.com/Gettinglumpedup

While the late 80's were the high water mark for overproduced hair bands, there was an undercurrent flowing below the mainstream popularity which would surface in the 90's as the punk revival. Los Angeles-based Bad Religion is a group which would not only benefit from that revival, but many consider the band to be a founder of the movement. The band formed in 1980 and released a couple of albums before going on hiatus in 1983 and splitting up shortly thereafter. After a slowly getting back together in 1986, they released their third album entitled "Suffer." While on tour promoting that album, the band began work on their fourth album, No Control. The band for this album was Greg Graffin on lead vocals, Greg Hetson on guitar, Brett Gurewitz on guitar and backing vocals, Jay Bentley on bass and backing vocals, and Pete Finestone on percussion. Building this album while on tour gave it a fast and high energy feel, with the band reverting to a hardcore punk style. While undeniably punk, Bad Religion has a more melodic sound than many of their punk predecessors. They also exhibit solid, significant lyrics, and utilize three-part vocal harmonies that are not normally associated with the genre. The idea of this group is to emphasize action, and living in the moment.Friend of the show (and John Lynch's better half) Heather Lynch brings us this hallmark of the punk revival because it is the album that introduced her to punk rock. Change of IdeasThe lead-off track for the album clocks in at 55 seconds, making it onto Loudwire's top ten list of "Greatest Songs Under One Minute Long." The concept in Graffin's lyrics is that we need to get away from ideas that trap us in fear and theory.Big BangThis song was penned by guitarist Brett Gurewitz. The lyrics are about how folks are searching for something in science or religion without really living their lives. "Big bang, big crunch. You know there's no free lunch. Kneel down and pray, here comes your judgment day."No ControlThe title track is a sonic trip to the mosh pit. We think we have things in hand, but everything fades away very soon, and we are powerless to control it.I Want to Conquer the WorldWe all have thought at times that the world would be a better place if we could just take over for a while. Gurewitz reflects on this in this piece, and wonders what we are doing here and now to make things a little better. "I want to conquer the world. Give all the idiots a brand new religion, put an end to poverty, uncleanliness and toil. Promote equality in all of my decisions."YouThis is a fast, angry song. "And you! painted my entire world but I don't have the turpentine to clean what you have soiled. And I won't forget it." ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Two Step Mamau by Wayne Toups & Zydecajun (from the motion picture "Steel Magnolias" )This southern film was had an all star cast and showcased the talents of a young Julia Roberts. STAFF PICKS:Sold Me Down the River by the AlarmWayne's staff pick reminds us of Power Station's "Bang the Gong." It made it to number 50 on the Billboard charts, but it was prominent on rock stations at the time. It is about a lovesick guy who got his heart broken. The Alarm is from Wales, but is often compared to Ireland's U2.Let the Day Begin by The CallRob brings us the title track from the Call's sixth studio album. It is a positive song with a shuffle beat. It was used as the campaign theme song for Al Gore in 2000. The band formed in 1980 in Santa Cruz. The Living Years by Mike & the Mechanics John Lynch's staff pick is Mike Rutherford's (bassist from Genesis) band, formed in 1985. The song is a wistful tune about missing the opportunity to truly connect with a father while he was alive. This is the title track from their second album, released in 1988.We Didn't Start the Fire by Billy JoelHeather features a song with 118 historical references in this fast-paced song. The idea of the track comes from a conversation Joel had with Sean Lennon about how difficult it is to be a young person in the times. Joel thought about how each generation has its issues, and pointed out some of the troubles from earlier decades. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Proliferous Souls by PestilenceWe haven't covered this Dutch death metal band, but we remedy that with this instrumental out at the time.

Bad Religion frontman Greg Graffin chats with Trey Elling about PUNK PARADOX: A MEMOIR. Topics include: Goal with the book (0:00) His first taste of live music (2:40) Trauma in rural Kansas in 1976 (4:18) The initial appeal of punk (7:57) A love for The Jackson 5 (10:25) The ugly reality of punk in 1984 (12:11) How lizards are like lead singers (13:41) A change in Bad Religion's crowd in the late ‘80s (16:22) Bad Religion's Christmas Songs album (17:21) The concept of “selling out” (18:35) Putting his academic career on hold for the band (21:31) Recovering from a string of traumas in the mid-1990s (23:04) Fostering his children's love for music (25:35) Brett Gurewitz's break from the band in the late 1990s (27:29) The one Bible verse he quoted in PUNK PARADOX (29:28) An interesting factoid about ants (33:11) The Milwaukee Bucks' NBA championship in 2021 (34:28) Rooting for an outspoken Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers (36:30) Whether Greg is still ‘punk' (40:26)
With razor-sharp guitars, breakneck rhythms, unrivaled harmonies and a socio-political worldview that disavows much of punk rock's anarchistic nature, Bad Religion has inspired countless bands over their 40+ year existence. Even their iconic logo, known by fans worldwide as "the cross-buster," has become synonymous with the genre itself. This is all without mentioning the inspirational trajectory of vocalist/songwriter Greg Graffin, who is seen as one of the genre's most vibrant and educated minds, earning a PhD in zoology from Cornell University and having written multiple books on evolution and theology. On this episode, Greg discusses the influence of his parents' divorced record collections, refining his vocal delivery over the years, and why he classifies his latest book, Punk Paradox: A Memoir (available now, wherever you get literature) as a "novelistic biography." The band also released their own collaborative autobiography, Do What You Want, in 2020.

Listening back to it now, it's hard to believe that Bad Religion's seventh studio album - 1993s 'Recipe For Hate' - was at the time considered a polarizing record that many hardcore fans felt was a sell-out. 30 years later, it's clear this was a band at the top of their game - maturing and expanding musically while still delivering ferociously intelligent songs about class, religion and navigating a treacherous path towards the 21st century. Our guest, personal trainer and Taekwon-Do Studio owner Aaron Fruitstone, makes the case that their brand of cerebral punk is as presciently valid now as it was when he was an angry teen. "Well madness reigned and paradise drowned When Babel's walls came crashing down Now the echoes roar for a story writ That was hardly understood And never any good." Songs featured in this episode: Recipe For Hate (Live Hollywood Palladium, 2004) - Bad Religion; Strike First - Leo Birenberg and Zach Robinson; No Control, Only Entertainment - Bad Religion; White Riot - The Clash; Commando - Ramones; Recipe For Hate, Kerosene - Bad Religion; Vigil Smile - Claw Hammer; American Jesus - Bad Religion; Porch - Pearl Jam; Portrait Of Authority - Bad Religion; House Of Wolves - My Chemical Romance; Wichita - Karen Landau and Greg Leisz; Man With A Mission, All Good Soldiers, Watch It Die - Bad Religion; Still In Hollywood - Concrete Blonde; Struck A Nerve - Bad Religion; Harder Than You Think - Public Enemy; My Poor Friend Me - Bad Religion; Growing Up - Fall Out Boy; Lookin' In - Bad Religion; Kids Of The Black Hole - Adolescents; Don't Pray On Me - Bad Religion; Sorrow - Greg Graffin (Live acoustic); Modern Day Catastrophists, Skyscraper, Stealth, Skyscraper (Piano version) - Bad Religion

This episode is an amazing education on the history of Bad Religion, Epitaph Records, the punk rock scene and the man himself Brett Gurewitz. Before Brett joins the show, it starts off with Stryker explaining why he thinks he's going off the deep end (mostly because of his old dog and old pillows) When Brett Gurewitz joins Stryker, they talk about the forming of Bad Religion in high school and how Brett, Jay Bentley and Greg Graffin met. Brett discusses everything from how they got their first radio spin on KROQ with Rodney on the Roq, to their first tours, to creating the record label Epitaph Records. Brett also tell Stryker about when Fletcher from Pennywise told to him to sign a then new band called Blink 182. Brett discusses with Stryker the thought process of testing the major label waters, and why for a time Bad Religion did sign to a major. Brett also shares the strategy and benefits to giving the music away for free to people like Kelly Slater and Tony Hawk (surf videos and video games). Brett shares the story of how as the owner of Epitaph, he "effed up" with The Vandals, he talks about the lesson he learned and how he made it right with the band. Brett talks honestly about his sobriety and the events in his life that lead him to living a sober life. In this interview, Stryker and Brett also discuss the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame (not in yet) and being on the cover of Rolling Stone (it almost happened). This episode is full of great stories, music education, and lots of inspiration. Hope you enjoy!
We had the pleasure of interviewing Emily Davis and the Murder Police over Zoom video! Emily Davis and the Murder Police (EDMP)—El Paso, TX's favorite resident alt-punk project helmed by songwriter and frontperson Emily Davis—have found success across the nation through their poignant music and creatively engaging social media presence. Emily's “heart-on-sleeve lyrics, biting wit, and own brand of acoustic-electric folk-punk,” as El Paso Inc. describes it, brings a unique presence to the Southwest US music scene. Emily has had a fascinatingly unique journey to the national stage. Their YouTube channel, featuring numerous punk rock covers (of, most notably, Bad Religion) has drawn serious attention – accumulating nearly 7 million views. Emily has clearly proven their talent deserves to be noticed, with a voice influenced by artists like Dolores O'Riordan, Shirley Ann Manson, Jenny Lewis and Neko Case, and a completely unique songwriting form of their own. And noticed they were, leading to the band's most significant outing to date – an opening slot on Bad Religion's 2019 fall tour to packed venues across the country. Through the opportunities and fans EDMP gained from this tour, they have expanded their audience to a national scale and have accumulated over 1 million plays on Spotify collectively from Emily's three solo albums and their debut album together, Same Old World.Emily's voice is an emotive one to say the least, and the often stark, introspective lyrics they write with expert precision are consistently front and center—commanding attention, undoubtedly. Emily's lyrical vulnerability on mental health, particularly regarding their experiences with bipolar disorder, is palpable but written in a manner that still feels relatable. A former Cigarettes After Sex Member—most notably playing guitar on their 2012 EP “I.”'s sleeper hit song, “Nothing's Gonna Hurt You Baby”— Emily's guitar playing especially in their own band's mix is no joke. They strum with a level of intensity unmatched by most, crafting the parts in a way that is entirely complementary with their voice. The other members of EDMP only add to that power and vulnerability, with each member bringing their skilled performances to the mix to further empower each song. EDMP has some significant accomplishments under their belt, even beyond their 2019 run with punk legends Bad Religion. In 2017, Emily toured solo with Bad Religion frontman Greg Graffin, supporting his at-the-time recently released solo record, “Millport”. In 2019 alone, the band opened for Leftover Crack, The Toasters, Authority Zero, and alt-rock cult superstars Cold War Kids. They were about to head out on tour with El Paso-based rock legends Sparta this last Spring, but had to put that plan on pause due to COVID-19. Still, Emily Davis and The Murder Police haven't let the pandemic hinder their progress, having just completed their second successful crowdfunding campaign. The band raised an impressive $13K to finance their upcoming second record, coming Spring of 2021. Their debut record, “Same Old World” was released on October 5, 2018 as the result of a similarly successful crowdfunding campaign. The full band's debut record featured a mix of 90's-inspired alt rock, folk and punk, to form a sound that Emily has no doubt continued to curate and perfect for their upcoming second full-length, “Never A Moment Alone.”We want to hear from you! On this track Kris welcomes GREG GRAFFIN, front man for the punk band BAD RELIGION, a band whose no nonsense approach and Do It Yourself spirit helped them rise to the top of the Punk scene in L.A. and far beyond. Greg discusses their new punk rock manifesto, “Do What You Want”, the band's outlook on the state of the world, and the nearly fatal rock concert that was not widely covered by the media. Excerpt from DO WHAT YOU WANT (Hatchette Book Group):“We started playing the show,” Greg recalled, “and a big hole opened up in front of me on the dance floor and bodies started falling into the hole.” The people who had been standing in front of the stage disappeared into the space where the floor had been.Bad Religion stopped playing and the people on the right side of the dance floor shouted in protest, unaware of what had hap- pened. But the screams of those who had fallen or were in danger of falling drowned them out. A huge cloud of dust rose from the lower level and people continued to tumble into the pit. Special Thanks to GREG GRAFFIN AND TO THE ENTIRE BAND FOR THEIR SUPPORT. Thanks also to BRETT GURWITZ and EPITAPH RECORDS for the use of Bad Religion's library of music, MICHAEL GIARRATANO and everyone at HATCHET BOOK GROUP. In this episode, Bo Bennett and Kim Ellington speak with world-renowned artist and humanist science fiction author Scott Burdick about how his travels led him to a humanistic world view, and how his latest science-fiction novel, Nihala, explores many humanistic issues. Scott's bio from Amazon.com: Scott Burdick studied art at Chicago's American Academy of Art and then film and writing at Chicago's Columbia College, where his short story "Fear" was published in the Hair Trigger anthology while a student. Burdick subsequently illustrated covers for TSR's Dungeon and Dragon magazines, as well as working on the development team for Dreamworks' animated feature film, Spirit (uncredited). Unsatisfied with the prospect of living in Chicago or LA and working for others, Scott and his wife, fellow artist Susan Lyon, moved to rural NC in the foothills of the Appalachian mountains, as a home base between traveling extensively across the world--researching many cultures and indigenous tribes for his artworks, novels, and short stories. Burdick's paintings are widely shown in galleries and museums across the country, and he's directed three independent documentaries on religion--In God we Trust?, Sophia Investigates the Good News Club, and In Reason We Trust, (featuring Richard Dawkins, Adam Savage of Myth Busters, Eddie Izzard, Dan Barker, Annie Laurie Gaylor, Lawrence Krause, Greg Graffin of the band Bad Religion, and a dozen other prominent free-thinkers from the 2012 Reason Rally in Washington DC.) Many of the themes of his films overlap those of his novels--religion, science, philosophy, the direction of technology, and morality. Nihala description from Amazon.com: Steven Hawking recently warned that artificial intelligence poses an existential threat to the human species. And yet, how to stop such a singularity without halting scientific advancement itself? Some claim that humanity should abandon the enslavement of technology altogether for a return to nature and a way of life more in sync with our psychological needs. But who is to say exactly how much technology is too much? And who will ensure none crosses some arbitrary line of demarcation? Kayla Nighthawk, crippled and orphaned from birth, has been raised in the theocratic society of Potemia. Hundreds of years have passed since the Neo-Luddite War cut Potemia off from the rest of mankind. The Founder predicted that sciencecraft would destroy those on the Outside, but what if the pursuit of scientific advancement has created wonders beyond imagining? Will Kayla risk leaving her homeland in search of the forbidden knowledge that might cure her—even at the cost her immortal soul? Through a series of dialogues with the strange creatures she encounters, Kayla's religious convictions come under attack. Her search for the divine, an absolute basis for morality, and the meaning of existence itself becomes a matter of life or death for Kayla—as well as for all of humanity. This is the history of the next millennia. An epic tale of technology and the backlash against it. A journey of war, love, revenge, and heartbreak—a philosophical adventure story.
