In this episode, we tackle the challenging question: Is it okay to question God? Denise Robinson, Director of Adult Discipleship, opens up about the importance of doubt in a life of faith, sharing how questioning can actually strengthen our relationship with God rather than weaken it. We explore stories from the Bible, what it looks like to bring our honest struggles to God, and ways the church can become a safe place for people to wrestle with difficult questions. If you've ever felt uncertain or wondered if your doubts are welcome, this conversation will offer reassurance and guidance.

Send me a text! I'd love to know what you're thinking! In this episode, Warren Brown and Brad Strawn, authors of Enhancing Christian Life, explain how contemporary Christian practices can often lead to what they call a 'puny' experience of Christianity that elevates personal feelings of closeness to God over outward expressions of faith. They argue for a robust, 'supersized' form of Christian life, where followers of Jesus are deeply connected with their church community, contributing to and drawing from a shared life that reflects the teachings of Jesus in tangible and embodied ways.THIS EPISODE'S HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE:Warren Brown and Brad Strawn discuss the premise of their book addressing the problem of individualism in Christian life. They elaborate on how this individualism leads to a disembodied Christian life, where the body is given lower status compared to the soul. The concept of "supersizing" Christian life is introduced, suggesting that a communal approach to faith and acknowledging the physical nature of human existence can enhance one's spiritual experience.Warren Brown stresses that humans are not separate entities of bodies and souls, but fundamentally bodies, which challenges traditional dualistic views.Brad Strawn emphasizes the importance of community and visible actions as markers of a genuine Christian life. The problem of Christian life being treated as a private, individualistic experience is critiqued, promoting a more communal and outward-focused practice. Both guests discuss the transformative power of living out Christian faith in communal and practical ways, such as through church congregations actively engaging in charitable acts. The conversation shifts towards the errors of mind-body dualism, reinforcing the idea that spiritual experiences should not be isolated from physical and communal contexts.Brad Strawn argues that even solitary spiritual practices like meditation are enriched and informed by communal and historical church practices. The dialogue covers how internal spiritual states (often considered private) should ideally reflect and be influenced by one's external actions and community engagements. The discussion concludes by considering the broader implications of their ideas on church practices, emphasizing an active, outward-looking approach to faith that integrates personal reflection with communal action.RELEVANT RESOURCES AND LINKS:Books mentioned:Enhancing Christian Life, by Warren Brown and Brad StrawnThe Physical Nature of Christian Life, by Warren BrownDid My Neurons Make Me Do It? by Warren Brown and Nancy MurphyThe Extended Mind, by Annie Murphy-PaulFuller Studio - Brad Strawn lecturesRelated episodes:A Crisis of Adult Discipleship, with Brian WallaceSpiritual Leadership in the Digital Space, with Laura MurrayeDid you know Spiritual Life and Leadership has been named the #1 Spiritual Leadership Podcast by the Feedspot Podcasters Database? Previously, we've done a deep dive into the theology of the body and how the Christian should view their physical bodies in light of how God views the body. In this latest episode, we sit down to talk with Pastor Todd Liefer, who discusses how our theology of the body impacts our care for the body. Todd gives listeners very practical tips on everything from overall health and wellness to the importance of physical activity, nutrition, rest, and mental and spiritual health. Todd also discusses how care for the body bleeds into the realms of discipleship, stewardship, and love for neighbor.   Bio: Pastor Todd Liefer has a life-long passion for sharing the Word of God in fresh, creative ways. Over the last decade he has served ministries in Austin, TX and St. Louis, MO. He currently serves as the Associate Pastor of Adult Discipleship at Hales Corners Lutheran, Hales Corners, WI. You'll often see him and his family on all kinds of outdoor adventures throughout the Milwaukee area!  Learn about LCMS Life Ministry at lcms.org/life, and email us at friendsforlife@lcms.org. Not all the views expressed are necessarily those of the LCMS; please discuss any questions with your pastor.

On Episode 7, we're joined by Dr. Chris Burgwald, Director of Adult Discipleship and Evangelization for the Diocese of Sioux Falls to discuss HB 1057, known as the Vulnerable Child Protection Act, a bill filed Tuesday that would prohibit medical providers from prescribing puberty-blocking drugs and cross-sex hormones, or conducting mutilating surgeries on a child who has emotional distress surrounding his or her sex. We discuss the Church's understanding of the human person as created by God. For additional reading on this topic, check out a helpful http://www.usccb.org/issues-and-action/marriage-and-family/marriage/promotion-and-defense-of-marriage/upload/Gender-Ideology-Select-Teaching-Resources.pdf (resource) compiled by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, which includes several statements and teaching documents from Pope Francis over the last several years, or this 2019 http://www.vatican.va/roman_curia/congregations/ccatheduc/documents/rc_con_ccatheduc_doc_20190202_maschio-e-femmina_en.pdf (document) published by the Vatican Congregation for Catholic Education.
