Fred Bell is the Managing Director and a member of the Board at the Palm Springs Air Museum. Throughout his tenure with this historical gem of an institution, he has helped to grow attendance, support and the vast array of military aircraft on display. That includes the overseeing of one of a handful of rare donations by the U.S. Department of Defense of a retired F117A Stealth Bomber now on display. Bell talks with Patrick Evans and Randy Florence on this episode about the museum and his community service in the Coachella Valley, but he also shares a wealth of interesting, entertaining, and outrageous (true) stories about growing up with two famous parents in show biz, and a story you have to hear to believe about an encounter he once had while working at Sea World with an adorable penguin!

The day job recently took me to Oz where on my last morning, I went to Moorabbin in Southern Melbourne to visit Ewan McArthur at the Moorabbin Air Museum. The museum is home to an eclectic collection of aircraft with the view to have as many of them as hands-on as possible. The star attraction is their Mk.XXI Beaufighter. Ewan kindly showed me around, and we recorded the tour for you. We do ramble a bit, and we do eventually get to the Beaufighter, so stick with us.Do check out the museum's website and social media because, as you'll hear, you can't keep Ewan and the team there down for long!Let me know what you think.Moorabbin Air Museum website: https://www.aarg.com.au/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/moorabbinairmuseumTwitter: https://twitter.com/ANAMAviationInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/anamaviation/The Beaufort Fund Raising Page: https://gofund.me/3d3fb4d6Join the fun on Patreon! The Combat Air Museum has served as an educational institution and tourism destination for forty four years. It is one of a handful of major aviation museums in the United States located on an active air field. Visitors to our Museum are regularly treated to flying activities of Air Force fighter aircraft and Army helicopter operations. With the longest runway in the State of Kansas, large refueling tanker aircraft of the Kansas Air National Guard and army troop transports often fill the skies around the Museum. The Museum's "Young Aviators" classes and Girls In Aviation Day offer students and Girl Scouts a unique opportunity to be immersed in the midst of a museum covering aviation history from the earliest days of flight to the present day. Located at the Topeka Regional Airport on Forbes Field in Topeka, Kansas, the Combat Air Museum is a federally recognized not-for-profit 501(c)(3) educational organization dedicated to the creation of facilities and resources for the education of the local and regional communities through the collection, preservation, conservation and exhibition of aircraft, information, artifacts, technology and art associated with the military aviation history of the United States of America. On exhibit at the Museum: 45 aircraft ranging from the earliest aviation period to the present day Largest collection of WWI replica aircraft in the Mid-West Historic aircraft engines of many sizes and types, including a rare Whittle Gas Turbine Engine An extensive display of artifacts and dioramas and a growing gallery of military aviation art Membership Becoming a member in the Combat Air Museum is important to our continuing ability to preserve and interpret the history of aviation. Members receive unlimited free admission, a bi-monthly newsletter (Plane Talk), discounts on gift shop merchandise, invitation to our social events, including bi-monthly meetings with speakers on a wide range of interesting subjects and, above all, a unique exposure to aviation history. The Museum has become a popular destination for tourists to northeast Kansas and membership in CAM can help support this facility to continue as a valuable contributor to the quality of life in the region. In 1942, the U.S. Navy began construction of 17 wooden hangars to house K-class airships that would be used for anti-submarine patrol and convoy escort. Two of these hangars were built at Naval Air Station Tilllamook, which was commissioned in December 1942 to serve the Oregon-Washington-California coastal areas. With WW II well under way, construction of the two hangars was rushed to completion. Hangar "B" was the first one built and was completed in August of 1943. Hangar "A" which was destroyed in a 1992 fire, was completed in only 27 working days! Amazingly, there were no serious injuries or deaths on the whole project. Stationed at NAS Tillamook was Squadron ZP-33 with a complement of eight K-Class airships. The K-ships were 252 feet long, 80 feet in diameter, and filled with 425,000 cu. ft. of Helium. With a range of 2,000 miles and an ability to stay aloft for three days, they were well suited for coastal patrol and convoy escort. With the surrender of Japan on September 2, 1945 and the Japanese submarine threat eliminated, Naval Air Station Tillamook was reduced to functional status. In 1948, Naval Air Station Tillamook was decommissioned for good, ending a long and proud tradition. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/loren-alberts/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/loren-alberts/support
Yankee Air Museum was founded in 1981 and is located in Southeastern Michigan. The Museum quickly grew when it acquired its flyable aircraft, B-17 Flying Fortress, B-25 Mitchell Bomber, and C-47 Skytrain, offering the public the chance to fly in some of America’s most iconic aircraft. In 2004, the Museum experienced a fire that destroyed the original World War II building that the Museum was housed in, along with most artifacts and aircraft. The efforts to rebuild began immediately, which allowed the Museum to reopen in 2010 in its current location. Following the success of the Save the Bomber Plant campaign, the Museum purchased a portion of the Willow Run Bomber Plant that produced B-24 Liberators during World War II. In 2013, the Museum was able to purchase 144,000 square feet of the Plant. The building is currently being used to house and protect of the Museum’s large aircraft acquisitions. Since the reopening in 2010, the Museum has experienced rapid growth both in their collections as well as in their public programing. The Museum has acquired a dozen static aircraft, five historic flying aircraft, and continues to open exhibits annually. In 2017, the Museum became a part of Unity in Learning, a partnership that brings together the Ann Arbor Hands-on Museum, Leslie Science and Nature Center as well as the Yankee Air Museum in educational programming with a STEAM background. The Museum continues to build upon their mission to educate individuals through the history of American aeronautics, aerospace industries and their associated technologies while inspiring generations through personal experiences to instill pride in their national accomplishments. CEO Kevin Walsh talks about the museum, its flying aircraft, Thunder Over Michigan, its volunters and its educational mission with host Jim Fausone.

If you're fascinated by history, the Greatest Generation, World War II, and aviation, there's a good chance you're already aware of the Lyon Air Museum - Greatest Generation Tribute. If you don't know or haven't yet visited the Lyon Air Museum, add it to your to-do list immediately. Nestled away in a Santa Ana industrial park, directly on the tarmac of John Wayne Airport, the Lyon Air Museum features airworthy craft documenting many facets of World War II. Not only an aircraft at the museum, but Lyon also showcases various ground vehicles as well - including a parade vehicle that Adolf Hitler rode in. Perhaps the most notable aspect of the Lyon Air Museum is that members of the Greatest Generation themselves - World War II veterans - volunteer as docents, bringing this truly incredible venue to life nearly every day. Click play to listen below as Mark Foster, Lyon Air Museum CEO, shares more fascinating details in this iDSC podcast. And be sure to check out the amazing photo gallery too. ***Transcript*** Recorded July 31, 2018, in Santa Ana, CA Mark: We're the Greatest Generation in an aviation museum, so we focus primarily on World War II veterans and aviation. We've got famous airplanes, the rare flyable World War II type airplanes. We've got the military vehicles, motorcycles... we even have a very historical car that was originally owned by the evil dictator, Adolph Hitler. Introduction to the Lyon Air Museum Tom: Welcome to iDriveSoCal, the podcast all about mobility, from the automotive capital of the United States, Southern California. Tom Smith here, and I am in ... Where are we technically? Costa Mesa, right? Mark: We're Santa Ana, which is really Newport Beach, Irvine, Costa Mesa. It's all kind of around the corner, and it's at John Wayne Airport. That's the thing, we're not near John Wayne, we're at John Wayne Airport. Tom: That is Mark Foster, who is the, what's your exact title? Mark: Whatever you want to call me, but President, CEO. Tom: Okay. President, CEO of the Lyon Air Museum. Mark: Correct. Tom: Right down here, literally, I'm looking at Alaska Airlines getting ready, it's taxiing down the runway right now. Mark, thank you very much for having me and the iDriveSoCal podcast. Again, all about mobility, from the automotive capital of the United States. A big piece of mobility is air travel. The Lyon Air Museum. Tom: You have a couple of things going on in the museum currently, but I recently learned about you guys. I guess you've been around since '09, and I recently learned about you guys on KTLA. Saw a quick piece and said, "Hey, I really want to go down there and have a chat," because you guys do some really, really cool stuff down here. So, with that strange, kind of totally non-traditional introduction, Mark Foster of the Lyon's Air Museum, literally right on John Wayne Airport watching planes taxi as we do this interview. Thank you for joining me. Mark: Oh, it's great to have you. Thanks, Tom. Aviation Museum Dedicated to The Greatest Generation Tom: So, high-level. What do you guys do here? "We're the Greatest Generation in aviation museum." Mark: Well, we're an aviation museum, and we're the Greatest Generation in an aviation museum, so we focus primarily on World War II veterans and aviation. Tom: Okay. For those that don't, and I think there's a whole lot of people that aren't aware of the opportunity to come and check out what you guys have here, but your museum, again, you're right on the John Wayne Airport tarmac, you can come and see what? Lyon Air Museum shares John Wayne Airport tarmac. "The airplanes that are in the hangar here, all of them are airworthy." Mark: Yeah. Well, we've got the World War II airplanes. We really start with pre-World War II aviation history. We've got pre-World War II, like a DC-3 American Airlines type aircraft that's kind of a late '30s design, and then we go all the way up through aircraft that wou...
